  1. Well I have a thesis for you. I want you to see if you agree with my thesis. It's a bold statement so see if you agree.

  2. ! My thesis is this. Every one of us in our hearts loves rules. We all love rules. Let me give you some evidence to try and back it down.

  3. When we first had a child seven and a half years ago, we suddenly discovered that everyone around us had different baby books.

  4. These are books that tell you what routine to follow, how often to feed them, when to put them down for a nap, what to do, what not to do, how dark in the room must be, etc.

  5. And everybody craved these books with their newborn children because they all followed them religiously like a manual of instructions

  6. because the baby, unlike the new TV, doesn't come with a manual.

  7. And so people love these rules so they have some idea what to do.

  8. And we get very... they make these rules and make them feel secure.

  9. Let me give you another example.

  10. Exercise books and magazines that tell you how to get fit.

  11. Or what goes with them, the Fitbits and apps on your smartphone that measure how far you've run, how many calories you've burned off,

  12. how high your heart rate has been.

  13. Why do people spend a huge amount of money on these things?

  14. Because they like the rules, they like the targets.

  15. We want to know how we've done.

  16. See, it's not that actually we like rules in themselves.

  17. Probably most of us have some rules we don't like.

  18. The stink limits or rules that come from the government somewhere.

  19. But actually in our hearts, we all want the security of rules, of black and white,

  20. of being able to measure ourselves like these apps on our smartphones and Fitbits and things like that do.

  21. To tell us how we're doing.

  22. To make us feel like we're making progress.

  23. We all love rules.

  24. Isn't that right?

  25. And not only do we love rules, we love the praise of other people.

  26. We love other people telling us we're doing a great job or we're good folks.

  27. Now that's understandable because we're human beings,

  28. we've been made for relationships, made to live in community.

  29. So it's understandable we should want the praise of others.

  30. In fact, Jesus in some of his parables

  31. uses the thought of getting praise from him on the last day

  32. as an incentive for obedience now.

  33. So there's nothing wrong with wanting to be praised by others.

  34. There isn't necessarily wrong with some rules in themselves.

  35. But the danger with rules, with loving rules and loving the praise of others,

  36. is we can become slaves to them.

  37. If we find our security in keeping certain rules

  38. or in being affirmed by other people,

  39. then we'll end up being slaves to those rules

  40. or slaves to those other people.

  41. And that is what was happening to these young Christians

  42. in Galatia, what is now modern Turkey,

  43. 2,000 years ago.

  44. And there's a danger for every one of us today

  45. who professes to be a follower of Jesus Christ.

  46. There's very much a danger for those who do not yet know Jesus Christ.

  47. So what's going on here?

  48. Well, Paul has been writing to these Galatians

  49. to not be slaves but to retain the freedom they have in Jesus Christ.

  50. But these false teachers have come in

  51. who are very sincere, very plausible, very polite.

  52. And they said, no, you need to follow these rules.

  53. If you want to be truly secure as part of God's people,

  54. you need to follow these Old Testament rules over here,

  55. like we do.

  56. Then you'll know you're really part of God's people.

  57. So Paul is warning them against that slavery.

  58. He starts to go before and after contrast to remind them.

  59. Look at verse 8.

  60. Formally, he said, when you did not know God,

  61. you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods.

  62. In those days, these people would have followed

  63. the gods of the Roman world or the Greek world

  64. or the local cults in Asia Minor.

  65. But all those religions were basically the same

  66. as every religion is across the world.

  67. All based on the basic principle,

  68. the elementary principle, as Paul puts it in verse 10.

  69. If you do enough good stuff, God will accept you.

  70. That's what drives, in a sense, the new mother

  71. looking at those baby manuals.

  72. If I do this, it will all be alright.

  73. What drives the devout Muslim

  74. keeping the fast of Ramadan

  75. in the hope that if he keeps these rules,

  76. Allah will be merciful to him on Judgment Day.

  77. See, those things are essentially fear-driven.

  78. Keeping the rules to hope you'll be alright.

  79. And that means they're always self-centered, actually.

  80. So we're always consumed with our own performance.

  81. Have I done enough?

  82. And when we're consumed with rules

  83. or wanting to please others,

  84. it either goes one of two ways, doesn't it?

  85. Our self-centeredness, it either leads to pride,

  86. we look down on other people

  87. who don't do it as well as we do,

  88. or despair,

  89. if you're another type of person,

  90. where you think, I have never matched up.

  91. And so instead of freedom and joy,

  92. we end up with slavery, self-centeredness,

  93. pride and despair.

  94. Paul's saying that formally.

  95. You follow those rules,

  96. but you shouldn't anymore.

  97. Look at verse 15.

  98. Remember what happened after

  99. you first believed the Gospel.

  100. What then has become of your blessedness,

  101. your happiness, we could say?

  102. For I testify to you

  103. that if possible,

  104. you would have gouged out your eyes

  105. and given them to me.

  106. See, Paul had only ended up in Galatia

  107. preaching the Gospel

  108. because of some illness.

  109. It seems probably connected with his eyes.

  110. He said, you are so happy,

  111. the joy you experienced

  112. in knowing the living God

  113. through faith in Jesus Christ.

  114. Made you generous.

  115. You are saved from despair

  116. and pride and slavery.

  117. To be generous,

  118. has God been generous to you?

  119. Now how would that happen?

  120. It's because in the good news

  121. of Jesus Christ,

  122. this Gospel that Paul preached,

  123. people could discover

  124. they could be accepted by God,

  125. not because of what they had done,

  126. but because of what Jesus has done.

  127. When they had this blessedness,

  128. as Paul puts it in verse 15,

  129. it's because they could say

  130. what Paul said back in chapter 2,

  131. verse 20.

  132. The life I now live in the flesh,

  133. I live by faith in the Son of God

  134. who loved me and gave himself for me.

  135. They knew they'd be loved by the living God,

  136. loved by the Son of God

  137. who had given himself for them.

  138. So they were set free

  139. from the religious rules,

  140. set free from pride and despair,

  141. set free from the self-centeredness

  142. of performance.

  143. To be generous,

  144. to be joyful,

  145. to be blessed.

  146. A joy-driven, self-giving life.

  147. Paul says that's what you experience.

  148. So why,

  149. why are you heading back to the slavery?

  150. Well of course the reason

  151. they're heading back to slavery,

  152. the same reason you and I

  153. will head back to the slavery of rules,

  154. is we like rules

  155. because we feel we're achieving,

  156. we feel we're secure.

  157. We like the praise of other people

  158. because it is tangible,

  159. it is there for us.

  160. We're just like them, aren't we?

  161. So what does Paul do

  162. to win these people back?

  163. How can we be kept

  164. living by faith

  165. in the Son of God

  166. who loved us

  167. and gave himself for us?

  168. Well as we look through these verses

  169. we'll see Paul

  170. is reminding them

  171. of the joy and delight

  172. they had by faith in Christ.

  173. He's reminding them

  174. two things of that.

  175. First of all,

  176. he's calling them to enjoy

  177. the security they had

  178. with God

  179. by faith in Christ.

  180. Enjoy the security

  181. of your relationship

  182. with God,

  183. he says.

  184. Now you see they weren't

  185. enjoying that security

  186. if you look at verse 10.

  187. What were they doing

  188. in their slavery?

  189. You observed days

  190. and months

  191. and seasons

  192. and years.

  193. These were all

  194. Jewish practices,

  195. mainly from the Old Testament

  196. but then embellished

  197. by Jewish tradition.

  198. Because the false teachers

  199. were telling them

  200. if you kept these rules

  201. you'll really be part

  202. of God's people.

  203. You'll really know

  204. you're secure and loved.

  205. But actually those rules

  206. were no longer relevant.

  207. Those things all pointed forward

  208. to the coming of Jesus Christ

  209. the true rescuer.

  210. They were the school teachers

  211. Paul put it

  212. in the last chapter

  213. of the Guardian

  214. who was to point them

  215. to Christ.

  216. They were now redundant.

  217. They served their purposes.

  218. They served their purposes.

  219. So they were not rules

  220. to keep anymore.

  221. because they served

  222. their purpose.

  223. Yet you see the temptation?

  224. They felt if they were

  225. doing something.

  226. They felt if they could

  227. measure their performance

  228. against a rule

  229. then actually that would

  230. mean they're okay.

  231. Now I don't imagine

  232. you or I

  233. are very tempted

  234. to observe

  235. Jewish customs

  236. of months and seasons

  237. and years.

  238. But I bet there are rules

  239. we all like to follow.

  240. And I know that

  241. from my own experience.

  242. I mentioned earlier

  243. my daughter being born

  244. seven and a half years ago.

  245. When she was about

  246. three months old

  247. when she'd wake up

  248. in the morning

  249. I'd go and take her

  250. out for a little walk

  251. around where we lived

  252. so my wife could have

  253. a little bit of extra sleep

  254. having been up in the middle

  255. of the night feeding her.

  256. Now my practice

  257. has always been

  258. for years and years

  259. and years

  260. first thing in the morning

  261. to have that as my

  262. time of reading the Bible

  263. and praying.

  264. That was my time

  265. for God

  266. as far as I was concerned.

  267. And so I used to get

  268. really frustrated

  269. on those days

  270. where I'd sit down

  271. and I'd finally

  272. get a Bible open

  273. and then Zoe

  274. would start crying.

  275. And I'd get really angry

  276. with my three year old daughter.

  277. Why?

  278. Because I felt

  279. she was interfering

  280. with the thing

  281. that maintained

  282. my relationship

  283. with God.

  284. So in my mind

  285. it was like a rule

  286. I had to follow.

  287. I had to have that time

  288. of the morning

  289. of reading and praying

  290. otherwise I wasn't

  291. a good Christian.

  292. What was I doing?

  293. I was doing exactly

  294. the same as these Galatians.

  295. And I was thinking

  296. that somehow

  297. my relationship

  298. with God

  299. depended

  300. on what I was doing

  301. not on what Christ

  302. had done.

  303. And so that's why

  304. I was angry.

  305. That's why I was angry.

  306. Now what's the cure

  307. for thinking

  308. we can get right

  309. with God

  310. by rules

  311. or by our own

  312. performance?

  313. Well let me tell you

  314. what the cure is.

  315. The cure is not

  316. don't make rules

  317. because that's just

  318. another rule isn't it?

  319. That doesn't help.

  320. The cure is to enjoy

  321. the security we have

  322. with our Father

  323. in Heaven.

  324. That's what Paul

  325. reminds me of

  326. in verse 9 here

  327. of chapter 4.

  328. Now you've come

  329. to know God

  330. or rather be known

  331. by God.

  332. Do you know

  333. how he puts it

  334. both ways?

  335. I think he puts it

  336. both ways

  337. for this reason.

  338. Often our feelings

  339. tell us

  340. that we don't

  341. really know God

  342. or God doesn't

  343. really know me.

  344. That's how feelings

  345. go up and down

  346. don't they?

  347. I feel terrible

  348. unless I've had

  349. some food.

  350. Some of you

  351. are probably

  352. feeling quite sleepy

  353. and need to have

  354. some more coffee.

  355. Our feelings change

  356. with what we've eaten

  357. with the time of day

  358. with the weather.

  359. Guess from America

  360. British weather

  361. really affects us.

  362. You've seen the rain clouds

  363. the last few days

  364. you'll know why.

  365. Our feelings

  366. go up and down.

  367. What does not change

  368. is God's truth.

  369. That's why Paul says

  370. you've come to be

  371. known by God.

  372. And that word

  373. known in the Bible

  374. is a very personal word.

  375. It's not like saying

  376. I know Canberra

  377. is the capital

  378. of Australia.

  379. That's just

  380. intellectual knowledge.

  381. Know here

  382. is a personal word.

  383. It's like me saying

  384. I know my wife.

  385. So Paul is reminding them

  386. of this security

  387. they have in Christ.

  388. By faith in Christ

  389. they are known

  390. by God.

  391. They're included

  392. in the Lord Jesus.

  393. Included

  394. in God's family.

  395. In the verses

  396. before he's told them

  397. how God has given

  398. them his spirit.

  399. So by the spirit

  400. they can cry out

  401. Abba, Father.

  402. They are children

  403. of the living God

  404. simply by trusting

  405. in Jesus Christ.

  406. Not by what they do.

  407. So when we're tempted

  408. to think

  409. we need to follow rules

  410. to be accepted

  411. by God

  412. or when we're tempted

  413. in society

  414. to think that

  415. our worth

  416. our identity

  417. is found in what we do

  418. what we've achieved.

  419. We need to come back

  420. and remember

  421. and enjoy

  422. the security

  423. we can only have

  424. through faith

  425. in Jesus Christ.

  426. The security

  427. of being known

  428. and loved

  429. by our Father

  430. in Heaven.

  431. That does not come

  432. by going to Mass

  433. every week.

  434. It does not come

  435. by heading to church

  436. every so often.

  437. It does not come

  438. through being

  439. a nice person.

  440. It comes only

  441. through faith

  442. in Christ.

  443. Here's the first point

  444. Paul is making.

  445. Enjoy the security

  446. of God's relationship

  447. with you.

  448. Flee the slavery.

  449. Flee thinking

  450. you need to have

  451. that 20 minutes

  452. in the morning.

  453. But your relationship

  454. with God

  455. depends on that.

  456. It does not.

  457. It depends

  458. on Christ

  459. who died for you.

  460. There's another reason

  461. that Galatians

  462. have been tempted

  463. to turn back

  464. to slavery.

  465. Not just the attraction

  466. of rules

  467. so they can feel

  468. they can measure

  469. their progress

  470. but also the attraction

  471. of praise

  472. from others.

  473. Look down to verse 17

  474. for a moment.

  475. Paul talks about

  476. these false teachers.

  477. He says,

  478. they make much of you.

  479. Now we all like

  480. being made much of,

  481. don't we?

  482. We all have people

  483. packing us in the back

  484. saying,

  485. you're great,

  486. well done.

  487. Notice what Paul

  488. does here

  489. to woo these

  490. young Christians

  491. back to the truth

  492. of Jesus Christ.

  493. He doesn't give them,

  494. he doesn't flatter them.

  495. Rather,

  496. he compares

  497. his ministry

  498. and the ministry

  499. of these false teachers.

  500. He compares

  501. his motives,

  502. his methods,

  503. his goals

  504. and his results

  505. and their methods.

  506. Motives,

  507. methods,

  508. goals and results.

  509. So let's quickly

  510. look at that contrast.

  511. First of all,

  512. what is Paul's motive?

  513. What is Paul's motive

  514. in sharing the good news

  515. of Jesus Christ with them?

  516. Well back in chapter 1

  517. verse 10

  518. he said,

  519. I'm not out to please people.

  520. If I was,

  521. I wouldn't be preaching

  522. the gospel message.

  523. But those verses

  524. I quoted earlier

  525. from chapter 2

  526. verse 20,

  527. turn back over the page

  528. if you like.

  529. He tells us

  530. his motivation

  531. for everything.

  532. Chapter 2

  533. verse 20

  534. The end of the verse,

  535. the life I now live

  536. in the flesh,

  537. I live by faith

  538. in the Son of God

  539. who loved me

  540. and gave himself

  541. for me.

  542. See,

  543. Paul's motivation

  544. is love for Christ,

  545. love because Christ

  546. has loved him.

  547. So that's his motivation.

  548. Love for Christ.

  549. What's his method?

  550. We'll turn back to chapter 4

  551. and look at verse 12.

  552. Brothers,

  553. I entreat you,

  554. become as I am

  555. for I also

  556. became

  557. as you are.

  558. What was his method

  559. in sharing this good news

  560. with other people?

  561. It wasn't to stand

  562. in the street corner

  563. shouting at them.

  564. It wasn't even just

  565. to give them a little look.

  566. It was to identify

  567. with them,

  568. to live with them

  569. in their community,

  570. to live their way

  571. of life with them.

  572. He tells us elsewhere

  573. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 9:20

  574. chapter 9

  575. verses 20 and 22

  576. that this was his method.

  577. He would identify

  578. with people

  579. in order to get away

  580. all the barriers

  581. that could prevent them

  582. hearing the good news

  583. of Jesus.

  584. And the reason

  585. he puts it like this here

  586. is he wants the Galatians

  587. to stop identifying

  588. with those false teachers

  589. saying you need

  590. to do these rules

  591. but instead

  592. to identify

  593. with him

  594. and being motivated

  595. to live their life

  596. by love

  597. for the saviour

  598. who first loved them.

  599. Well that's Paul's

  600. motive and method.

  601. What's the false teacher's

  602. method?

  603. Oh he spells it out

  604. in verse 17.

  605. They make much of you.

  606. They were flattering

  607. with Galatians.

  608. They say you guys

  609. are really special

  610. and you can be

  611. even more special

  612. if you're doing this

  613. or you're following

  614. our rules.

  615. That's just like

  616. the TV evangelists

  617. we see today

  618. who will tell you

  619. you will be blessed

  620. if you donate money

  621. and give you

  622. some credit card

  623. details now.

  624. Or like the false teachers

  625. who will tell you

  626. God has a perfect plan

  627. for your life.

  628. God has your best life now.

  629. If only you'll put your

  630. if only you'll come

  631. and read my book

  632. follow my way.

  633. Or like the others

  634. who say

  635. if you really want

  636. your prayers heard

  637. and you're good enough

  638. to come on my special

  639. retreat over here

  640. learn this meditative

  641. technique

  642. then

  643. then

  644. you'll really

  645. get free to God.

  646. These teachers

  647. were making much of them

  648. they were flattering them.

  649. And what's their motive

  650. for doing it?

  651. Now look at the rest

  652. of verse 17.

  653. They make much of you

  654. but for no good purpose

  655. they want to shut you out.

  656. In other words

  657. these teachers

  658. could see

  659. the Galatians

  660. going off

  661. following the true gospel

  662. and they didn't want that

  663. because they wanted

  664. to crowd for themselves

  665. they said come over here

  666. wonderful

  667. special blessed people

  668. God has a perfect plan

  669. for you.

  670. So flattering them

  671. so they

  672. could gain the following.

  673. They wanted to have

  674. more Facebook friends

  675. they wanted to have

  676. more people

  677. following their tweets

  678. they wanted to have

  679. more hits

  680. on their blog

  681. and on their websites

  682. more donations

  683. in their accounts.

  684. So their goal

  685. was to shut

  686. these young Christians

  687. out of the kingdom

  688. of God.

  689. what was at the bottom

  690. of all that?

  691. It's pride

  692. isn't it?

  693. Pride

  694. it's pride

  695. that makes us

  696. want to follow rules

  697. it's pride

  698. that makes us

  699. want the praise

  700. of other people

  701. it's pride

  702. that made these

  703. false teachers

  704. want to have

  705. their rules

  706. want to have

  707. their following.

  708. In contrast

  709. what's the goal

  710. of Paul's ministry?

  711. He tells us

  712. in verse 18

  713. isn't he?

  714. It is always good

  715. to be made much of

  716. for a good purpose

  717. not only when I am

  718. present with you

  719. in other words

  720. he's saying

  721. I don't mind

  722. other people

  723. encouraging you

  724. and affirming you

  725. if they're doing it

  726. for a good reason

  727. I'm not trying

  728. to control you

  729. I'm not hung up

  730. about the number

  731. of people

  732. following my tweets

  733. I don't care

  734. about that

  735. so I don't mind

  736. if they're encouraging

  737. you for a good purpose

  738. rather than

  739. drag you away

  740. but here's Paul's goal

  741. verse 19

  742. my little children

  743. for you am I

  744. again in the anguish

  745. of childbirth

  746. until Christ

  747. is formed

  748. in you

  749. see what's Paul's goal?

  750. it's not that he'll

  751. have lots of followers

  752. it's not that people

  753. will like him

  754. his goal

  755. is that the lives

  756. of these believers

  757. will be transformed

  758. so that Christ

  759. is formed

  760. in them

  761. that instead of

  762. being insecure

  763. feeling they're

  764. not good enough

  765. they may know

  766. the power

  767. and presence

  768. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  769. instead of fighting

  770. and squabbling

  771. and being proud

  772. they may know

  773. the humility

  774. and wholeness

  775. of Christ

  776. he wants to see

  777. Christ's character

  778. developed in them

  779. you'll see that

  780. more and more

  781. when we get to

  782. chapter 5

  783. and do you know

  784. just how passionate

  785. he feels about this

  786. again he is in anguish

  787. as in the pains

  788. of childbirth

  789. it's the expression

  790. of his heart's desire

  791. for him

  792. not only his heart's desire

  793. but his work for him

  794. in writing this letter

  795. it's a pained letter

  796. it's the expression

  797. of his prayers for him

  798. the anguish

  799. that he has

  800. as he prays for them

  801. day by day

  802. now wouldn't it be

  803. wonderful

  804. if it was our desire

  805. for Christ

  806. to be formed in us

  807. not our desire

  808. to be approved of

  809. by others

  810. or to feel good

  811. about ourselves

  812. from following rules

  813. our desire

  814. to be transformed

  815. to reflect

  816. instead of our

  817. brokenness

  818. and confusedness

  819. and muddledness

  820. the beauty

  821. and wholeness

  822. of the Lord Jesus

  823. you see

  824. that is the gospel

  825. promise

  826. that is what

  827. God is doing

  828. at the end of this

  829. letter Paul will

  830. talk about

  831. the new creation

  832. is all that matters

  833. that is the new creation

  834. God is bringing about

  835. by the work of the

  836. risen Jesus

  837. in the hearts

  838. of all who trust

  839. in him

  840. so you see how

  841. the Galatians

  842. are supposed to

  843. respond to this

  844. contrast

  845. remember your

  846. form of slavery

  847. you fled that

  848. and you had that

  849. blessedness

  850. when you first

  851. trusted in Christ

  852. the blessedness

  853. that comes

  854. because you knew

  855. you were declared

  856. right with God

  857. you knew you received

  858. the Holy Spirit

  859. by faith

  860. by which you call out

  861. Abba

  862. Father

  863. no the fatherhood

  864. of God

  865. you've been included

  866. in God's people

  867. you're heirs of

  868. God's promises

  869. adopted as God's

  870. children

  871. all of that

  872. encompassed by

  873. Christ is being

  874. formed in you

  875. you're being made

  876. into new people

  877. he's wooing them

  878. back isn't he

  879. he wants them to

  880. see the blessedness

  881. the happiness

  882. the goodness

  883. they once had

  884. the happiness

  885. of knowing

  886. they're truly loved

  887. that their failings

  888. and rebellions

  889. would not be held

  890. against them

  891. the happiness

  892. of knowing

  893. they're secure

  894. before the Holy God

  895. and that only comes

  896. by trusting

  897. in Jesus Christ

  898. now what are a couple

  899. of practical consequences

  900. of longing

  901. for that blessedness

  902. what Paul spells out too

  903. briefly tells us

  904. what we should listen for

  905. we should listen

  906. for the truth

  907. don't just listen

  908. to people who

  909. will make much of you

  910. as these false

  911. teachers were doing

  912. if we only listen

  913. to people who

  914. agree with us

  915. and who at the end

  916. of the day

  917. we're actually

  918. submitting to

  919. if we only listen

  920. to things that

  921. make us feel better

  922. then how is Christ

  923. going to be formed

  924. in us

  925. we will not change

  926. we'll just end up

  927. in slavery

  928. we also need to

  929. listen for the

  930. whole truth

  931. we need to listen

  932. to the truth

  933. we need to long

  934. for Christ

  935. to be formed in us

  936. that should be our

  937. aspiration

  938. that should be our

  939. prayer

  940. often our prayers

  941. we long for little

  942. things don't we

  943. for someone to

  944. to feel a bit

  945. better

  946. for someone to

  947. do well in exams

  948. for someone to

  949. have a refreshing

  950. holiday

  951. they're not bad

  952. things to pray

  953. for

  954. but isn't there

  955. something deeper

  956. and better

  957. that Christ

  958. may be formed

  959. in us

  960. because that is

  961. the work God

  962. is doing

  963. he's forming

  964. the character

  965. of his son

  966. in us who

  967. believe

  968. remaking all

  969. our brokenness

  970. remoulding all

  971. our wonkiness

  972. and forming

  973. even in us

  974. the beauty

  975. and fullness

  976. of Jesus

  977. now how's that

  978. going to come

  979. about

  980. not by

  981. following rules

  982. not by longing

  983. for praise

  984. of others

  985. but by trusting

  986. in the Lord

  987. Jesus Christ

  988. the son of God

  989. who loved us

  990. and gave himself

  991. for us

  992. let's enjoy the

  993. security we have

  994. with God

  995. because of him

  996. let's enjoy

  997. the blessing

  998. of God's work

  999. in us

  1000. because of Christ

  1001. let's pray together

  1002. God
