  1. My brother-in-law has given us his Sky code so we can watch on the iPad and Sky TV. It's a remarkable thing and a wonderful thing.

  2. What it means is that you can get up on a Saturday morning and you can watch three international rugby test matches. And then in the afternoon you can watch three international football games. It's a great recipe for family harmony.

  3. But one of the things that you notice is as you watch rugby and football there's many, many differences. But one of the big differences is the managers or the coaches.

  4. And you notice in football they stand in a little box by the side of the pitch and they shout and they gesticulate and they scream at their players.

  5. But in rugby the coaches or managers don't stand at the side of the pitch. They now sit in the stands and they sit in the box.

  6. And the reason for that is it gives them a better perspective. They can see the whole of the pitch. They can see the whole of the team.

  7. And in Isaiah 13 we begin a new section of the book of Isaiah that we're working through.

  8. And you can say it's as if Isaiah takes his audience up the steps of the stadium of the world.

  9. So that you can get a better vantage point of what is going on. So that you can see the whole game.

  10. And so from verses 13 to 23 you will see that there are ten oracles or ten burdens, ten messages that are delivered by Isaiah to ten nations.

  11. On one level you could say that it's Isaiah's state of the nations address.

  12. But what we're going to see is that Isaiah doesn't deliver these oracles to the respective nations.

  13. He doesn't go to them. No, the audience for each oracle is actually the people of Judah.

  14. And particularly the remnant.

  15. That group of people within the people of Judah that were actually holding on to God.

  16. They were trusting in God.

  17. And not forsaking God.

  18. And Isaiah speaks to them, these ten oracles.

  19. So the question is why would it be important for these people,

  20. to this small little group of God's people,

  21. to hear about what is going to happen amongst the world?

  22. What is going to happen to these other super nations?

  23. These other nations?

  24. And here's the reason.

  25. Paraphrase Bob Dylan.

  26. You've got to trust somebody.

  27. You've got to trust somebody.

  28. And Isaiah wants his audience to understand,

  29. whatever you do,

  30. you don't want to trust the nations.

  31. Whatever you do,

  32. you don't want to trust the nations.

  33. And Judah, little tiny Judah,

  34. is going to be tempted to seek alliances with other nations,

  35. to deliver them,

  36. to protect them from their enemies.

  37. And Isaiah says,

  38. don't put your trust in them.

  39. And the question is,

  40. well, if you're going to trust somebody,

  41. who are you going to trust?

  42. And over and over and over again,

  43. Isaiah wants them to understand,

  44. that they've got to trust the Lord.

  45. They've got to trust God,

  46. because he is sovereign over all the nations.

  47. And through these chapters,

  48. we are going to find that God is not just in the coach's box,

  49. watching the action,

  50. seeing what the opposition is doing,

  51. and then acting and reacting accordingly.

  52. No, God is in absolute control

  53. of everything that is going on below.

  54. that his game plan is being executed sovereignly,

  55. with all the twists and all the turns.

  56. But as we're going to see,

  57. God has got his eye

  58. on the final play of the game.

  59. And the reason Isaiah gives us a glimpse

  60. into the playbook of God here,

  61. is because Isaiah's role here as the prophet

  62. is to be a faith builder.

  63. He wants to encourage the faith of the people of Judah.

  64. He wants to encourage you and I

  65. to not give up as God's people,

  66. to not give up trusting God.

  67. It is to encourage you and I

  68. not to look for our security

  69. and our identity in other things,

  70. in other places,

  71. but to keep trusting in the Holy One of Israel.

  72. You've got to trust somebody,

  73. says Isaiah.

  74. And here is why that somebody needs to be God.

  75. And the first oracle, Isaiah,

  76. gives us specific reasons

  77. why we are to trust God.

  78. And the specific reason comes in five words.

  79. Five words.

  80. Why you need to trust God.

  81. Why is it that he needs to be

  82. your only and ultimate security?

  83. Five words.

  84. It's the day of the Lord.

  85. The day of the Lord.

  86. That's the reason.

  87. The day of the Lord.

  88. For what ultimate purpose?

  89. So we're going to ask.

  90. Four questions.

  91. We're going to ask what, why, who,

  92. and for what ultimate purpose?

  93. What, why, who,

  94. and for what ultimate purpose?

  95. Number one.

  96. What is the day of the Lord?

  97. Look at verses one to eight.

  98. What is the day of the Lord?

  99. Verse one.

  100. The oracle concerning Babylon,

  101. which Isaiah, the son of Amor,

  102. saw on a bare hill,

  103. raised a signal,

  104. cry aloud to them,

  105. wave the hand for them

  106. to enter the gates of the nobles.

  107. I myself have commanded

  108. my consecrated ones,

  109. my set apart ones,

  110. and have summoned my mighty men

  111. to execute my anger,

  112. my proudly exulting ones.

  113. The sound of a tumult is on the mountain,

  114. as of a great multitude.

  115. The sound of an uproar of kingdoms,

  116. of nations gathering together.

  117. The Lord of hosts is mustering

  118. a host for battle.

  119. They come from a distant land,

  120. from the end of the heavens.

  121. The Lord and the weapons

  122. of his indignation

  123. to destroy the whole land.

  124. Wail, for the day of the Lord is near.

  125. As destruction from the almighty

  126. it will come.

  127. Therefore all hands will be feeble,

  128. and every heart will melt,

  129. and they will be dismayed.

  130. Pangs and agony will seize them.

  131. There will be an anguish

  132. like a woman in labour.

  133. They will look aghast at one another.

  134. Their faces will be aflame.

  135. The language is very unnerving.

  136. And yet, as the reader and the listener,

  137. we are drawn into this.

  138. As we hear the various commands

  139. that are being uttered,

  140. raise a banner,

  141. listen,

  142. listen,

  143. wail,

  144. and other commands

  145. as you go through the chapter,

  146. it doesn't take too much investigation

  147. to realise why all these commands

  148. are being given.

  149. They are being given

  150. because the day of the Lord,

  151. the day of the Lord

  152. is actually a day of judgment.

  153. It will, says Isaiah,

  154. come like destruction

  155. from the almighty,

  156. and it is God

  157. who is the one

  158. who is in charge.

  159. God is not watching

  160. from a distance.

  161. He is in charge,

  162. he is directing,

  163. he is controlling,

  164. and yet the judgment

  165. that is to come on Babylon,

  166. we read off here,

  167. is to come at the hands

  168. of other nations.

  169. God is gathering an army

  170. from the other nations

  171. around to defeat Babylon.

  172. It's probably worth pointing out,

  173. isn't it,

  174. that in verse 3,

  175. it says consecrated ones,

  176. it might even say holy ones

  177. in your translation of the Bible.

  178. That doesn't mean holy

  179. in the sense of

  180. holy, holy, holy

  181. is the Lord God almighty.

  182. They're not holy in themselves,

  183. but they are holy

  184. in the sense of the word

  185. is set apart.

  186. They've been set apart,

  187. they've been consecrated

  188. by God

  189. for the task

  190. that he's called them to do.

  191. And at the end of verse 3,

  192. we see that they are

  193. proudly exalted ones.

  194. They are full of themselves,

  195. aren't they,

  196. the psalmist?

  197. They think they're chocker,

  198. they're full of themselves.

  199. These warriors,

  200. they are full of arrogance

  201. and boasting.

  202. But unknown to them,

  203. God has claimed them

  204. to achieve

  205. his ultimate purposes.

  206. And his purpose

  207. is to bring wrath

  208. and judgment to Babylon.

  209. And the result of this day,

  210. verse 7,

  211. is

  212. feeble hands

  213. and melting hearts.

  214. What a picture of helplessness.

  215. Demoralization.

  216. Total personal paralysis.

  217. Feeble hands

  218. and melting hearts.

  219. The day of the Lord,

  220. we see,

  221. is a fearful day.

  222. It's a day of divine judgment.

  223. And at the same time

  224. as we read on,

  225. we discover, however,

  226. that this day of the Lord

  227. seems to point

  228. beyond this particular judgment

  229. that is coming

  230. on the nation of Babylon.

  231. Look at verse 9.

  232. Behold,

  233. the day of the Lord

  234. comes cruel

  235. with wrath

  236. and fierce anger

  237. to make the land

  238. a desolation

  239. and to destroy

  240. its sinners from it.

  241. For the stars

  242. of the heavens

  243. and their constellations

  244. will not give their light.

  245. The sun will be dark

  246. on its rising

  247. and the moon

  248. will not shed its light.

  249. I will punish

  250. the world

  251. for its evil

  252. and the wicked

  253. for their iniquity.

  254. I will put an end

  255. to the pomp

  256. and the arrogant

  257. and lay low

  258. the pompous pride

  259. and the ruthless.

  260. Verse 13.

  261. Therefore I will make

  262. the heavens tremble

  263. and the earth

  264. will be shaken

  265. and misplaced.

  266. Can you see

  267. the day of the Lord

  268. that Isaiah is talking about here

  269. is cosmic in its effect.

  270. And that is the unison chorus

  271. of the prophets

  272. throughout the Old Testament.

  273. The day of the Lord

  274. is cosmic.

  275. But this day of the Lord

  276. is not only coming later

  277. but it is also coming

  278. much later.

  279. And that is one

  280. of the challenging parts

  281. of reading

  282. the Old Testament

  283. prophets, isn't it?

  284. Because the prophets

  285. seem to occupy

  286. they seem to operate

  287. in three different

  288. time zones.

  289. You know,

  290. you go into those

  291. buildings sometimes

  292. and there are

  293. those offices

  294. and there are

  295. three clocks

  296. on the wall.

  297. There's a clock

  298. at the time of the UK

  299. GMT

  300. Greenwich Mean Time

  301. and then there's

  302. a clock about Tokyo

  303. and then one about

  304. New York say

  305. and there's three

  306. different time zones.

  307. And the prophets

  308. of the Lord

  309. they operate

  310. in three different

  311. time zones.

  312. They operate

  313. in the now

  314. and the later

  315. and the much later.

  316. Have you got that?

  317. The now

  318. and the later

  319. and the much later.

  320. And we've already

  321. seen them in the

  322. first twelve chapters

  323. how the prophet

  324. in a sense

  325. is speaking

  326. in the now time zone.

  327. He's contending

  328. the people of Judah

  329. for their abandonment

  330. of God.

  331. But here in chapter 13

  332. we've been an example

  333. of the later

  334. time zone

  335. and the much

  336. later time zone.

  337. But the difficulty

  338. is that sometimes

  339. the prophets

  340. don't delineate

  341. very quickly

  342. very clearly today

  343. entirely well

  344. between the two

  345. time zones

  346. together.

  347. But it's clear

  348. he's not just

  349. talking about

  350. a later period

  351. a time that's to come

  352. but a much later

  353. period.

  354. That this judgment

  355. on Babylon

  356. is pointed

  357. to a cosmic

  358. judgment.

  359. A cataclysmic

  360. judgment

  361. when God

  362. will pour out

  363. his wrath

  364. in judgment

  365. on the world

  366. and we're told

  367. here on the

  368. whole earth.

  369. The heavens

  370. will tremble.

  371. He will pour out

  372. his wrath

  373. and judgment

  374. on the day

  375. of the Lord

  376. on which day

  377. on which the day

  378. that Babylon

  379. will fall.

  380. Well on the day

  381. that Babylon

  382. will fall

  383. is just actually

  384. a pale shadow

  385. of that great

  386. and terrible day.

  387. The day of the

  388. Lord is a day

  389. of judgment.

  390. But it's ultimate

  391. manifestation

  392. the ultimate

  393. day of the Lord

  394. still lies in the

  395. future.

  396. So that in a sense

  397. is the what

  398. of the day of the

  399. Lord

  400. a day of divine

  401. judgment.

  402. The second question

  403. is why?

  404. Why?

  405. What is God's

  406. reason for the

  407. day of the Lord?

  408. Look at verse 11

  409. I will punish

  410. the world

  411. for its evil

  412. and the wicked

  413. for their

  414. iniquity.

  415. I will put

  416. an end to

  417. the pomp

  418. of the arrogant

  419. and lay low

  420. the pompous

  421. pride of the

  422. ruthless.

  423. Now the

  424. danger here

  425. is that we

  426. read a verse

  427. like this

  428. and we begin

  429. to think to

  430. ourselves

  431. well finally

  432. God is going

  433. to sort

  434. this world

  435. out.

  436. He's going

  437. to get rid

  438. of all the

  439. evils.

  440. He's going

  441. to get rid

  442. of all the

  443. wickedness.

  444. He's going

  445. to get rid

  446. of the terrorists

  447. and the rapists

  448. and the murderers

  449. and then he's

  450. going to give

  451. the rest of us

  452. a much better

  453. world to live

  454. in.

  455. And when we

  456. go down that

  457. route we

  458. find ourselves

  459. we give

  460. ourselves far

  461. too much

  462. credit.

  463. Listen to this

  464. quote by the

  465. Russian writer

  466. Solzhenitsyn.

  467. He says

  468. if only there

  469. were evil

  470. people somewhere

  471. insidiously

  472. committing evil

  473. deeds and it

  474. were necessary

  475. only to separate

  476. them from the

  477. rest of us and

  478. destroy them.

  479. But the line

  480. dividing good and

  481. evil cuts through

  482. the heart of

  483. every human

  484. being and who

  485. is willing to

  486. destroy a piece

  487. of his own

  488. heart.

  489. You see the

  490. why of the

  491. day of the

  492. Lord is sin

  493. and evil

  494. but all of

  495. us, every

  496. single one of

  497. us stand

  498. condemned.

  499. All of us

  500. have missed

  501. the mark

  502. for how God

  503. intends us to

  504. live.

  505. We do that

  506. by sense of

  507. commission

  508. when we lie

  509. or steal

  510. or covet

  511. what other

  512. people have.

  513. We do it by

  514. sense of

  515. omission

  516. too when we

  517. fail to love

  518. other people

  519. as we are

  520. called to do.

  521. When we

  522. fail to

  523. forgive

  524. when we

  525. refuse to

  526. be content

  527. with what we

  528. have in

  529. life and

  530. we're always

  531. wanting more.

  532. All of us,

  533. think about it

  534. another way,

  535. all of us

  536. may have

  537. built our

  538. identity on

  539. something other

  540. than God.

  541. And so by

  542. this account

  543. we are guilty.

  544. We've looked

  545. at other

  546. things other

  547. than God

  548. and thought

  549. if only I

  550. had that.

  551. If only I

  552. had that I'd

  553. be condemned.

  554. If I just

  555. had that dress

  556. or if I

  557. could just

  558. live in that

  559. house or

  560. if I could

  561. just have

  562. that job

  563. or if I

  564. could just

  565. have that

  566. husband,

  567. we've looked

  568. at those

  569. things and

  570. we've thought

  571. if only I

  572. had those

  573. things then I

  574. feel valuable.

  575. Then I feel

  576. significant.

  577. I feel I

  578. have meaning

  579. if I get

  580. those results,

  581. if I achieve

  582. this.

  583. And as such

  584. we've made

  585. those things

  586. more fundamental

  587. to our security

  588. and our worth

  589. than God.

  590. And we've

  591. enslaved

  592. ourselves to

  593. idols.

  594. idols of

  595. money,

  596. possessions,

  597. reputation,

  598. job or

  599. possessions.

  600. And thereby

  601. we've condemned

  602. ourselves and

  603. that is why

  604. the day of

  605. the Lord,

  606. the why of

  607. the day of

  608. the Lord is

  609. sin and

  610. evil.

  611. And the

  612. reality is

  613. therefore all

  614. of us,

  615. every single

  616. human being

  617. stands

  618. condemned.

  619. judgment.

  620. So the

  621. what of

  622. the day of

  623. the Lord is

  624. judgment and

  625. the why of

  626. the Lord is

  627. the day of

  628. the Lord is

  629. sin.

  630. But what

  631. does Isaiah

  632. say here about

  633. who?

  634. The who of

  635. the day of

  636. the Lord?

  637. It's very

  638. specific here.

  639. The who of

  640. the day of

  641. the Lord.

  642. Again in

  643. chapter 13

  644. and verse 1.

  645. The oracle

  646. concerning

  647. Babylon.

  648. Like I said

  649. at the beginning

  650. of the sermon,

  651. the ten oracles

  652. here form something

  653. of a state of

  654. the nations

  655. for Israel.

  656. For Isaiah's.

  657. But for the

  658. reader, we've

  659. been reading

  660. through, haven't

  661. we?

  662. I hope we

  663. have.

  664. And the first

  665. 12 chapters

  666. of Isaiah.

  667. Particularly for

  668. Isaiah's audience,

  669. the first one

  670. would be a

  671. massive surprise.

  672. Who would

  673. they have

  674. expected it

  675. to be about?

  676. Who is the

  677. nation that

  678. they would

  679. have expected

  680. the first

  681. oracle to

  682. be about?

  683. They would

  684. have expected

  685. it to be

  686. about Assyria.

  687. Assyria.

  688. Up to this

  689. point, Isaiah

  690. has been

  691. warning Judah

  692. of the imminent

  693. threat of

  694. Assyria.

  695. Assyria at

  696. that point was

  697. the superpower

  698. nation to

  699. the east.

  700. But Isaiah

  701. in the first

  702. 12 chapters

  703. has learned

  704. that Judah

  705. is going to

  706. be overthrown.

  707. He's going

  708. to be scattered.

  709. But it's not

  710. going to be

  711. in the hands

  712. of Assyria.

  713. Assyria is

  714. going to attack

  715. Judah, but it's

  716. not going to

  717. overpower Judah.

  718. No, the power

  719. that was biding

  720. his time in the

  721. shadows, who is

  722. going to

  723. overthrow

  724. Judah, was

  725. indeed

  726. first one,

  727. Babylon.

  728. Babylon held

  729. the title

  730. among the

  731. nations of

  732. the kind of

  733. rising superpower.

  734. The up and

  735. coming nation.

  736. And as such,

  737. Babylon was

  738. probably the

  739. nation that

  740. was most

  741. tempting to

  742. Judah.

  743. It was most

  744. tempting for

  745. Judah to run

  746. to them, to

  747. the Babylonians,

  748. and say, if

  749. we do what

  750. you tell us

  751. to do, will

  752. you protect

  753. us?

  754. Will you

  755. guard us

  756. against our

  757. enemies?

  758. And then in

  759. this opening

  760. oracle, God

  761. chose through

  762. Isaiah to

  763. reveal what

  764. was going to

  765. happen to

  766. them.

  767. What is going

  768. to happen to

  769. Babylon?

  770. After their

  771. defeat of Judah,

  772. they themselves

  773. are going to

  774. be destroyed.

  775. You've got to

  776. trust somebody,

  777. Isaiah says,

  778. but whatever

  779. you do, don't

  780. trust Babylon.

  781. Because look

  782. what God is

  783. going to do

  784. to her.

  785. You've got to

  786. trust in the

  787. Lord.

  788. Now there's

  789. another reason,

  790. isn't there,

  791. why Babylon is

  792. the head of

  793. this list, of

  794. these nations

  795. and oracles.

  796. But I want to

  797. make one quick

  798. application.

  799. I think all of

  800. us probably have

  801. felt a little bit

  802. concerned about

  803. the political

  804. rhetoric of the

  805. last few days,

  806. no matter what

  807. side you're on.

  808. Our country is

  809. at something

  810. of a crossroads.

  811. And I don't

  812. want to encourage

  813. patriotism or a

  814. love for this

  815. country.

  816. Nor am I

  817. suggesting that

  818. a Christian

  819. should abandon

  820. the political

  821. process.

  822. This country is

  823. a great country

  824. to live in.

  825. And this country

  826. is so much

  827. to serve the

  828. rest of the

  829. world.

  830. But the UK,

  831. like any

  832. country, can

  833. become an

  834. idol.

  835. And God

  836. would view

  837. any attempt

  838. to find our

  839. security in

  840. this nation

  841. in which we

  842. live, he

  843. would find any

  844. attempt to do

  845. that with the

  846. same contempt

  847. that he had

  848. for those to

  849. find their

  850. security in the

  851. superpower nation

  852. of Isaiah's

  853. day, namely

  854. Babylon.

  855. Isaiah says

  856. to you and I

  857. this morning,

  858. the one that

  859. you are to

  860. trust in is

  861. the Lord.

  862. There is no

  863. guarantee that

  864. God will delay

  865. the day of

  866. the Lord.

  867. But this nation

  868. will not go the

  869. same way as

  870. Assyria, or

  871. Babylon, or

  872. Rome, or

  873. Greece.

  874. But there is

  875. one, isn't

  876. there, who

  877. outlasts the

  878. nations.

  879. because he

  880. is sovereign

  881. over all the

  882. nations.

  883. And Isaiah

  884. says to you

  885. and I, that

  886. is who I

  887. want you to

  888. trust.

  889. I want you

  890. to trust in

  891. God.

  892. So Isaiah

  893. puts Babylon

  894. at the top

  895. of the list

  896. because they

  897. are the

  898. superpower nation.

  899. But there is

  900. another reason

  901. why they are

  902. at the height

  903. of the list.

  904. Which is

  905. this, that

  906. more than

  907. any other

  908. name in the

  909. Bible, Babylon

  910. personifies

  911. something, doesn't

  912. it?

  913. What does

  914. Babylon remind

  915. you of?

  916. It reminds

  917. you of

  918. Babel in

  919. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  920. 11.

  921. Humankind's

  922. desire to be

  923. its own

  924. saviour.

  925. But Babylon is

  926. the epitome of

  927. human pride.

  928. Look at verse

  929. 11 again.

  930. I will put an

  931. end to the

  932. pomp of the

  933. arrogant.

  934. And I will

  935. lay low the

  936. pompous pride

  937. of the ruthless.

  938. And then look

  939. at verse 19.

  940. And Babylon

  941. the glory of

  942. kingdoms, the

  943. splendour and

  944. pomp of the

  945. Coltians.

  946. Well, it will

  947. be like Sodom

  948. and Gomorrah

  949. when God

  950. overthrew them.

  951. And each time

  952. when Babylon is

  953. mentioned in

  954. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  955. 11, the

  956. actual Hebrew

  957. word is

  958. Babel.

  959. It's

  960. Babel.

  961. And that

  962. rings a bell,

  963. does it?

  964. And it's true

  965. because in

  966. Genesis 11, the

  967. origin of the

  968. city is in

  969. fact the city

  970. of Babel.

  971. What happened

  972. in Genesis 11?

  973. There was a

  974. bid to organise

  975. life, to

  976. create security

  977. and stability

  978. with our own

  979. resources.

  980. And without

  981. reference to

  982. God.

  983. So the people

  984. of Babel, do

  985. you remember,

  986. they said, let's

  987. build a city for

  988. ourselves and a

  989. tower that reaches

  990. up to the heavens

  991. so that we can

  992. make a name for

  993. ourselves and not

  994. be scattered over

  995. the whole earth.

  996. And it's pride.

  997. And they said, we

  998. will show God and

  999. in the end God

  1000. shows them.

  1001. He confuses their

  1002. language.

  1003. And he scatters

  1004. them throughout

  1005. the earth.

  1006. But here we see

  1007. in Isaiah that

  1008. that city doesn't

  1009. go away.

  1010. It's back.

  1011. Babel is back

  1012. and rearing its

  1013. ugly head in the

  1014. time of Isaiah.

  1015. And it obviously

  1016. hasn't changed

  1017. its tune.

  1018. It's still known

  1019. for its pride.

  1020. And God says, now

  1021. I'm going to

  1022. destroy this city.

  1023. And God does

  1024. destroy the city

  1025. of Babylon.

  1026. But the thing

  1027. is, the spirit

  1028. of Babylon, the

  1029. spirit of Babel

  1030. lives on.

  1031. That initial

  1032. day of the

  1033. laws brings

  1034. destruction for

  1035. the physical

  1036. city.

  1037. But the pride

  1038. from which

  1039. Babylon was

  1040. known continues.

  1041. And indeed

  1042. continues.

  1043. So Isaiah

  1044. here in verse

  1045. 11 is saying

  1046. God is going to

  1047. put an end to

  1048. that arrogance

  1049. and that pride.

  1050. And he's going

  1051. to humble the

  1052. pride of the

  1053. ruthless.

  1054. And the

  1055. question is,

  1056. when is he

  1057. going to do

  1058. that and we

  1059. come back to

  1060. the day of

  1061. the Lord?

  1062. You see, what

  1063. is going to

  1064. happen on the

  1065. day of the

  1066. Lord isn't

  1067. just the focus

  1068. of the Old

  1069. Testament.

  1070. But it's also

  1071. the focus of

  1072. the New.

  1073. And when we

  1074. turn to the

  1075. end of the

  1076. Bible in

  1077. Revelation

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

  1078. chapter 18,

  1079. here is what

  1080. John tells

  1081. us of his

  1082. vision of

  1083. history.

  1084. Let me read

  1085. to you.

  1086. After this he

  1087. says, I saw

  1088. another angel

  1089. coming down

  1090. from heaven,

  1091. having great

  1092. authority, and

  1093. the earth was

  1094. made bright

  1095. with his

  1096. glory, and

  1097. he called

  1098. out with a

  1099. mighty voice,

  1100. Fallen!

  1101. Fallen is

  1102. Babylon the

  1103. great.

  1104. In her

  1105. heart, she

  1106. says, I

  1107. sit as a

  1108. queen.

  1109. I am no

  1110. widow, and

  1111. mourning I

  1112. will never

  1113. see.

  1114. For this

  1115. reason, her

  1116. claims will

  1117. come in a

  1118. single day.

  1119. Death, and

  1120. mourning, and

  1121. famine, and

  1122. she will be

  1123. burned up with

  1124. fire, for

  1125. mighty is the

  1126. Lord God who

  1127. has judged

  1128. her.

  1129. And you

  1130. read through

  1131. Revelation

    Revelation 18 chapter mention

  1132. chapter 18, and

  1133. as confusing as

  1134. Revelation can

  1135. be, but

  1136. Babylon in

  1137. Revelation 18

  1138. looks like a

  1139. place of

  1140. culture, and

  1141. of craft, and

  1142. home comfort, and

  1143. normal daily

  1144. pleasures.

  1145. Things that you

  1146. and I are very

  1147. very familiar

  1148. with in this

  1149. life, and

  1150. it's a good

  1151. life, but

  1152. Revelation says

  1153. it is inherently

  1154. corrupt.

  1155. And here's

  1156. what is

  1157. important to

  1158. see, that

  1159. in Revelation

  1160. 18, that

  1161. Babylon is

  1162. not just one

  1163. nation, it's

  1164. not a state, but

  1165. it is anywhere

  1166. where a godless

  1167. world order

  1168. holds sway.

  1169. This is how

  1170. one commentator

  1171. puts it, Greg

  1172. Veal.

  1173. He says any

  1174. institution or

  1175. facet of

  1176. culture that

  1177. is characterized

  1178. by pride,

  1179. economic

  1180. abundance,

  1181. persecution, and

  1182. idolatry is

  1183. part of

  1184. Babylon.

  1185. So you see,

  1186. Babylon is all

  1187. those things that

  1188. seek to undermine

  1189. God and his

  1190. people.

  1191. All those things

  1192. that seek to

  1193. lure us away

  1194. from trusting

  1195. God.

  1196. All those things

  1197. that would say

  1198. we should spurn

  1199. God, ignore

  1200. God, pretend

  1201. to be God, or

  1202. mock God, and

  1203. God says, I am

  1204. not going to be

  1205. mocked.

  1206. So is

  1207. Babylon present

  1208. in the UK?

  1209. You bet it

  1210. is.

  1211. Is it present

  1212. in Ireland?

  1213. Yes.

  1214. Is it present

  1215. in Canada?

  1216. In Afghanistan?

  1217. In Mexico?

  1218. In Iraq?

  1219. In the

  1220. Americas?

  1221. Throughout

  1222. Europe?

  1223. And Australia?

  1224. And Africa?

  1225. Of course it

  1226. is.

  1227. And all

  1228. those who are

  1229. part of

  1230. Babylon, who

  1231. seek to find

  1232. their satisfaction

  1233. elsewhere,

  1234. elsewhere other

  1235. than in God,

  1236. who seek to

  1237. find their

  1238. satisfaction in

  1239. wealth and

  1240. power and

  1241. not in him,

  1242. who seek to

  1243. save themselves,

  1244. who are full

  1245. of pride,

  1246. will one day

  1247. come under the

  1248. fearful judgment

  1249. of the day of

  1250. the Lord.

  1251. One last

  1252. thing.

  1253. I mentioned

  1254. didn't I

  1255. earlier that

  1256. Isaiah serves

  1257. as a faith

  1258. builder.

  1259. you might

  1260. be wondering,

  1261. I haven't

  1262. seen that

  1263. yet,

  1264. in Isaiah

  1265. 13, but

  1266. here it

  1267. comes.

  1268. How is

  1269. this meant

  1270. to build

  1271. up your

  1272. faith?

  1273. And I

  1274. think the

  1275. answer to

  1276. that lies

  1277. in the

  1278. final question

  1279. of the

  1280. day of

  1281. the Lord,

  1282. which is

  1283. what is

  1284. its ultimate

  1285. purpose?

  1286. What is

  1287. the day of

  1288. the Lord's

  1289. ultimate

  1290. purpose?

  1291. Look at

  1292. Isaiah

    Isaiah 14 chapter mention

  1293. chapter 14

  1294. and verses

  1295. 1 and 2.

  1296. 13,

  1297. for the

  1298. Lord will

  1299. have

  1300. compassion

  1301. on

  1302. Jacob

  1303. and

  1304. will

  1305. again

  1306. choose

  1307. Israel

  1308. and

  1309. will

  1310. set

  1311. them

  1312. in

  1313. their

  1314. own

  1315. land

  1316. and

  1317. sojourners

  1318. will join

  1319. them

  1320. and attach

  1321. themselves to

  1322. the house

  1323. of

  1324. Jacob

  1325. and the

  1326. peoples

  1327. will take

  1328. them and bring

  1329. them to

  1330. their place

  1331. and the

  1332. house

  1333. of Israel

  1334. will possess

  1335. them in

  1336. the Lord's

  1337. land as

  1338. male and

  1339. female slaves

  1340. they will

  1341. take captive

  1342. those who

  1343. were their

  1344. captives and

  1345. rule over

  1346. those who

  1347. oppress

  1348. them.

1349. Now there is a word

  1350. That is so vital

1351. And it's the first word

  1352. It's a three letter word

  1353. Can you see it?

  1354. For

  1355. For

  1356. First one

1357. For the Lord will have compassion

1358. Do you see why that is so important?

  1359. Here is the reason

1360. For everything that we've just read

  1361. On chapter 13

1362. The reason for God's judgment

  1363. On Babylon

  1364. Is ultimately

1365. God's compassion on his people

1366. The reason that God is going to bring judgment

  1367. On all

  1368. That is against God

1369. Is because God loves his people

1370. He wants to give his people

1371. A world that doesn't have to deal

1372. With all this kind of stuff

1373. And you see that points us to something

1374. That we see all the way through

1375. The teaching of the Bible

1376. It's a pattern that is picked up

1377. In the book of Isaiah

1378. Which is how God seems to work

1379. Over and over and over again

  1380. Which is that God

  1381. Is the God

  1382. Who brings salvation

  1383. Through

  1384. Judgment

1385. You go back to the beginning of the Bible

  1386. You go to Noah

  1387. And the flood

1388. And God judges those people

  1389. In Noah's day

  1390. Doesn't he

  1391. In the flood

  1392. But through the judgment

  1393. Of the flood

1394. He saves Noah and his family

  1395. In the boat

  1396. Salvation through judgment

  1397. He went the clock

  1398. Forward a little bit

  1399. And God judges Pharaoh

  1400. And the Egyptians

1401. And he brings the water

  1402. And the sea down

  1403. On the Egyptians

1404. The same sea that he split

1405. In order to save his people

  1406. Moses and the Israelites

  1407. Is salvation through judgment

1408. And here we see that God

1409. Is going to judge Babylon

1410. But he's going to save Judah

1411. By bringing her back from exile

  1412. Salvation through judgment

  1413. And in these verses

1414. While God will bring his people

1415. Back from exile in Babylon

  1416. And judge Babylon

  1417. The fulfillment of all

1418. That is in these two verses

1419. Doesn't happen in their return

1420. And the reason for that is

  1421. The ultimate fulfillment

  1422. Of these promises

1423. Will depend on the ultimate

  1424. Salvation through judgment

1425. That all these were pointed to

1426. Listen to Saul's in it again

1427. The line dividing good and evil

  1428. Cuts through the heart

  1429. Of every human being

1430. Remember back in the wise section

1431. We saw that all of us

  1432. Found condemned

  1433. There is none righteous

  1434. No not one

1435. None of us here can claim

  1436. To be without pride

  1437. And in that sense

  1438. All of us

  1439. Are condemned

1440. But two thousand years ago

  1441. God in a sense

1442. Brought the day of the Lord

  1443. Forward a bit

  1444. For some people

1445. He brought the day of the Lord

  1446. And his wrath

  1447. And his judgment

  1448. Forward

1449. And he pulled it out

  1450. On one person

1451. The one person in human history

1452. Who could never have been accused

1453. Of being part of Babylon

  1454. Jesus Christ himself

  1455. You see what happened

  1456. On the cross

  1457. Two thousand years ago

  1458. Was that the wrath

  1459. The judgment of God

  1460. For sin

  1461. Was poured out

  1462. Upon the Lord Jesus

  1463. He took on

  1464. The role of Babylon

1465. He took on the role

  1466. Of the consummate

  1467. Enemy of God

1468. Such that on that day

  1469. As Isaiah prophesies here

  1470. The rising sun

  1471. Would be darkened

1472. On that day as well

1473. And for those who trust

  1474. In this Jesus

  1475. Who is being judged

  1476. There is salvation

  1477. Salvation through judgment

  1478. For those who trust

  1479. In Jesus

  1480. And nothing else

  1481. Nothing in themselves

1482. For those who will move

  1483. From the boastful pride

  1484. That is characteristic

  1485. Of Babylon

  1486. To the humble repentance

  1487. That judgment

  1488. Means our salvation

  1489. God judges

  1490. His son

  1491. On the cross

  1492. But he saves

  1493. All who will trust

  1494. In him

  1495. But for those

  1496. Who will find

  1497. Their security

  1498. In God

  1499. Through Jesus

  1500. There is no fear

  1501. Of that fearful day

  1502. Because for us

1503. The day of the Lord

  1504. Has come

  1505. And Jesus

  1506. Has taken the wrath

  1507. And judgment

  1508. Of that day

  1509. For us already

  1510. That all the wrath

  1511. That you and I

  1512. Deserve

  1513. If we trust

  1514. In Jesus

  1515. Has been paid for

1516. It has been dealt with

1517. And so in the book

  1518. Of Revelation

  1519. The chapter following

  1520. Chapter 18

  1521. Where Babylon

  1522. Falls

  1523. In chapter 19

  1524. We have

  1525. A string of

  1526. Hallelujah choruses

  1527. And here is what

  1528. John writes

1529. Right in the midst of it

  1530. John 19

  1531. He writes

  1532. Then I heard

  1533. What seemed to be

  1534. The voice

  1535. Of a great multitude

  1536. Like the roar

  1537. Of many waters

  1538. And at the sound

  1539. Of mighty peals

  1540. Of thunder

  1541. Crying out

  1542. Hallelujah

  1543. For the Lord

  1544. Our God

  1545. The almighty

  1546. Reigns

  1547. Let us rejoice

  1548. Let us exalt

  1549. And give him

  1550. The glory

  1551. For the marriage

  1552. Of the Lamb

  1553. Has come

  1554. And his bride

  1555. Has made herself

  1556. Ready

  1557. It was granted

  1558. To her

  1559. To clothe herself

  1560. With fine linen

  1561. Bright and pure

  1562. John Oswald writes

  1563. He says

1564. It is all too easy

  1565. To be blown away

  1566. By the glory

  1567. Of the world

  1568. So we think

  1569. Ah there is reality

  1570. But that is not

  1571. Where glory resides

  1572. Glory resides

  1573. In the Lord

  1574. God almighty

  1575. Who brought salvation

  1576. To us

  1577. Through judgment

  1578. Of his son

  1579. In our place

  1580. And he says

  1581. All who trust

  1582. In him

  1583. Have no fear

  1584. Of the day

  1585. Of the Lord

  1586. And on that day

  1587. Of the Lord

  1588. When Babylon

  1589. Falls

  1590. When Babylon

  1591. Is crushed

  1592. When every

  1593. Anti-God

  1594. Force is crushed

  1595. We will rejoice

  1596. He will usher us

  1597. Into a world

  1598. Where there is

  1599. No sin

  1600. And no rebellion

  1601. Where all the things

  1602. We read of

  1603. In chapter 13

  1604. Of Isaiah

  1605. Could not be further

  1606. From our experience

  1607. Or imagination

  1608. Because the world

  1609. Will be perfect

1610. And Isaiah says to you

1611. You've got to trust somebody

  1612. Trust in the one

  1613. In whom

  1614. The glory

  1615. Truly resides

  1616. Not in any nation

  1617. Not in anything

  1618. In this world

  1619. Trust in the Lord

  1620. God almighty

  1621. Let's pray
