  1. Isaiah 19.

  2. Kirk Paster is an artisanal professor in Australia.

  3. !

  4. One day you bring it up with your mother, and without a pause she comments,

  5. Oh, I didn't tell you.

  6. A new family moved here across the road, and I thought it would be nice to be neighborly.

  7. So I took them a casserole, and I gave them grandma's wedding as well.

  8. They looked so pleased.

  9. And Paster, imagine the situation.

  10. You might be rather bewildered by your mother's reckless, scandalous generosity.

  11. You might have an outburst of anger or jealousy.

  12. But the reason Paster gives that illustration here is because in Isaiah 19,

  13. Isaiah is announcing God's plan to give away Israel's wedding ring.

  14. Or at least to melt it down into three rings.

  15. Yes, one for Israel, but apparently and astonishingly one for Egypt and one for Assyria.

  16. And I don't know whether you've noticed it as I've been preaching through these early chapters,

  17. that Isaiah is a book of surprises.

  18. But here is one big surprise that I wasn't expecting.

  19. Here in this chapter you see the reckless, scandalous generosity of God.

  20. You see the reckless, scandalous love of God.

  21. And the reckless, scandalous dreams of God.

  22. All coming from itself.

  23. From itself.

  24. If you were here last week, let me try to really up to speed on where we're at.

  25. I'm going to a new section.

  26. Chapter 30 to 23.

  27. It's really a series of oracles that are delivered to Judah about neighbouring nations.

  28. In some ways it's the street of the nations address.

  29. But what's interesting is that it's addressed to Judah.

  30. Isaiah doesn't go around with all these other nations.

  31. And speak to them.

  32. No, he speaks to Judah about the other nations.

  33. And the reason he does that is because very simply he is saying to Judah,

  34. whatever you do, whatever you do, do not put your trust in these other nations.

  35. Do not trust them.

  36. You need to put your trust in the Lord God Almighty alone.

  37. Because the problem is for Judah, at different points, all these different nations seem to be attractive.

  38. In terms of form and political alliances.

  39. So these nations, they might be the one Israel would think that could protect us against the other nations.

  40. And so we see Isaiah goes through each of these nations and he says,

  41. here's why you don't want to trust them.

  42. Here's why you don't want to trust them.

  43. And the bottom line is God is going to come and judge these people and destroy them.

  44. So that's where we began with Babylon.

  45. And God said that Babylon will be judged and destroyed.

  46. And chapter by chapter he's working through these various nations.

  47. The Philistines, Moab, Damascus, Hush.

  48. All of which, for instance, chapter 19 of this oracle concerning Egypt.

  49. And of all the nations that are mentioned,

  50. Egypt would be the one that invoked memories.

  51. Memories of opposition and persecution of God's people.

  52. It was, of course, Pharaoh and the Egyptians who held Israeli slavery for 400 years.

  53. And who God had delivered the Israelites some 700 years prior.

  54. And Isaiah speaks here of them.

  55. And you would think, wouldn't you, that that memory of what happened in Egypt would still be very strong.

  56. The southern kingdom, they would have said, we've got nothing to do with Egypt.

  57. And yet, what a difference that 700 years has made.

  58. Because now with Babylon, that kind of not yet is the power,

  59. and Assyria is still the mightiest nation on earth,

  60. Judah is looking for something to help them.

  61. They want to get out from under the rule of Assyria and Egypt.

  62. And Egypt comes as a very willing volunteer and says,

  63. if you do what we say, we'll protect you.

  64. And Isaiah says to Judah,

  65. don't even think about it.

  66. And what is somewhat different from this oracle,

  67. than the previous ones,

  68. is what is promised to Egypt after judgment.

  69. Here's what we're going to look into in this chapter.

  70. We'll pick up on the language of verse 22.

  71. Do you see that?

  72. There's two things the Lord will do there.

  73. He will strike and he will heal.

  74. And what is promised to strike Egypt,

  75. but then also heal them.

  76. So first of all, the striking of Egypt.

  77. Look at verse 1.

  78. Behold, the Lord is riding on a swift cloud,

  79. and he comes to Egypt.

  80. And the idols of Egypt will thank God of his presence,

  81. and the heart of the Egyptians will melt with him.

  82. And I will stir up the Egyptians against Egyptians.

  83. And they will fight against each other,

  84. and each against his favour,

  85. sitting against sitting,

  86. kingdom against kingdom.

  87. And the spirit of the Egyptians within them

  88. will be emptied out.

  89. I'll confound their counsel.

  90. They'll inquire of the idols,

  91. of the sorcerers,

  92. the mediums,

  93. the necromancers.

  94. And I will give over the Egyptians

  95. into the hand of a heart of master.

  96. And a fierce king will rule over them,

  97. says the Lord God of hosts.

  98. Isaiah, he gets in all these articles.

  99. He basically begins by saying,

  100. God is almighty.

  101. God's sovereign power.

  102. Do you see what he's riding on in verse 1?

  103. He's riding on a swift cloud,

  104. because he's in such control,

  105. and he's the master of the natural world.

  106. And Israel can do nothing about what God is going to do.

  107. And so it's no wonder he says,

  108. that you and the Egyptians,

  109. as well,

  110. that idols tremble,

  111. and their hearts match.

  112. Well, I'm going to pick apart the whole section,

  113. the first half of Isaiah 19,

  114. but let me give you the basic breakdown

  115. of what Isaiah says will happen to Egypt.

  116. He says there will be a collapse in three areas.

  117. First of all,

  118. there will be a social collapse,

  119. verse 24.

  120. That God's actions are going to bring relationships falling apart.

  121. Frustrations will set in.

  122. Nothing in the nation will go to plan.

  123. The Egyptians will fall into a kind of spiritual mumbo-jumbo.

  124. The country will come under dictatorship.

  125. And the question is,

  126. who has got the power?

  127. Who's got that kind of power

  128. to turn one great nation against another great nation?

  129. And Isaiah says,

  130. the answer is the Lord God of mighty.

  131. But there's not only social collapse,

  132. there's economic collapse.

  133. Look at verses 5 to 10.

  134. Can you see what's mentioned again,

  135. and again,

  136. and again?

  137. Look at verses 6 and 7.

  138. Do you see one word that keeps being mentioned?

  139. It comes up five times.

  140. Four times as a synonym.

  141. The synonym as well.

  142. Isaiah wants you to understand

  143. that there's an economic collapse coming.

  144. And it's symbolised by the dry heaven of the Nile.

  145. That's the word that's used again and again.

  146. The Nile, the Nile, the Nile.

  147. And the river was Egypt's lifeline.

  148. No river, no life.

  149. No river, no life.

  150. Who is it that could and would drive the Nile?

  151. Which means,

  152. Jesus was not just a great river,

  153. but the Nile was a great God in Egypt.

  154. And Isaiah says,

  155. well, there's only one man who can do it.

  156. And that's the Lord God Almighty.

  157. And then thirdly,

  158. there's political collapse.

  159. It's not just a corruption of our country.

  160. It doesn't get distracted.

  161. Then it's in the Lamb of the Thirteen.

  162. The ruling cabinet of Egypt.

  163. Well, there'll be folly there.

  164. That's not the rules to free.

  165. The leaders were enlightened in their claims.

  166. They weren't reading the signs of the times.

  167. And all they were doing is misleading.

  168. So then all in all,

  169. there's a comprehensive picture.

  170. There's a total unraveling of Egypt.

  171. The eternal unity will grow.

  172. The traditional religion.

  173. The political independence.

  174. The water supply.

  175. Agriculture.

  176. Commerce.

  177. Commerce.

  178. Political strategy.

  179. The markets.

  180. Wise teaching.

  181. Everything is unraveling.

  182. And Egypt is unable to do anything about it.

  183. And behind it all,

  184. there's one sovereign Lord

  185. riding on a cloud.

  186. A cloud of judgment.

  187. Judgment on a nation.

  188. Which was really like an enlarged version of people.

  189. Judgment's allowed to be talked about last week, didn't we?

  190. The place where human determination,

  191. where human felt,

  192. humans felt we can meet every need

  193. by self-project.

  194. We've got the wisdom to solve every problem.

  195. We don't need God.

  196. And that pride of Babel

  197. is at the very heart of this people.

  198. And without turning to God,

  199. God struck Babel.

  200. And God will strike Egypt.

  201. And so Isaiah says,

  202. okay to Judah,

  203. what are you going to do?

  204. Are you going to put your trust in Egypt?

  205. You think you're going to place

  206. all your security and your safety

  207. Isaiah says,

  208. don't you dare.

  209. Don't you do it.

  210. The Lord says,

  211. the one to trust is

  212. the Lord who rides on the cross.

  213. Our own rides on the clouds.

  214. The one to trust is

  215. the Lord

  216. who strikes in judgment.

  217. But in verse 16,

  218. there's a great change of gear.

  219. Can you pick that up?

  220. Can you see me, others?

  221. There's a change of writing style, actually.

  222. It moves

  223. from poetry to prose

  224. in verse 16.

  225. And it's a very deliberate contrast

  226. in writing style.

  227. And I think it's there

  228. to make you stop

  229. and think.

  230. It's intended to point you

  231. to a change.

  232. There's a contrast.

  233. And there's a series of five,

  234. isn't there?

  235. In that day.

  236. Can you see that?

  237. There's 16,

  238. 18,

  239. 19,

  240. 23,

  241. 24,

  242. in that day.

  243. And it points beyond

  244. the striking of Egypt

  245. to the astounding

  246. healing of Egypt.

  247. It's a shocker.

  248. So verses 16 and 17,

  249. there are a bit of a hinge

  250. where Egypt is portrayed

  251. as women who are fearful

  252. of the Lord.

  253. They're terrified.

  254. But as we read on,

  255. we read on that fear

  256. is a good fear.

  257. Because it's a fear

  258. that has led to repentance.

  259. Look at verse 18.

  260. In that day,

  261. there will be five cities

  262. in the land of Egypt

  263. that will speak the language

  264. of Cagan.

  265. And they'll swear allegiance

  266. to the Lord of hosts.

  267. And one of these

  268. will be called

  269. the city of destruction.

  270. And in that day,

  271. there will be an altar

  272. to the Lord

  273. in the midst of the land

  274. of Egypt

  275. and a pillar to the Lord

  276. and his border.

  277. And it will be a sign

  278. and a witness

  279. to the Lord of hosts

  280. in the land of Egypt

  281. where they cry to the Lord

  282. because of oppressors.

  283. He will send them

  284. a saviour

  285. and a defender

  286. and a deliverer.

  287. And the Lord

  288. will make himself known

  289. to the Egyptians.

  290. And the Egyptians

  291. will know the Lord

  292. in that day

  293. and they will worship

  294. and sacrifice and offering

  295. and they will make vows

  296. to the Lord

  297. and perform them.

  298. And the Lord

  299. will strike Egypt,

  300. striking and healing.

  301. And they will return

  302. to the Lord

  303. and he will listen

  304. to their opinions

  305. and mercy on the Lord.

  306. So right away,

  307. there's something

  308. monumental happening.

  309. There's a profound shift

  310. in loyalty and allegiance

  311. that's going to take place

  312. in the future.

  313. And do you notice

  314. what Isaiah pictures?

  315. He says,

  316. you go into Cairo,

  317. you'll put it into cities

  318. and you'll go into the shop

  319. and they will start speaking

  320. Hebrew to you.

  321. Now you talk to refugees

  322. or migrants

  323. who move from their homeland

  324. to a new country.

  325. And they will tell you

  326. that the day they stop

  327. speaking their mother tongue

  328. and they start speaking

  329. and thinking

  330. and dreaming

  331. and speaking naturally

  332. the language of the land

  333. they are living in,

  334. that day is a huge day,

  335. isn't it?

  336. So for many of you,

  337. you're not there yet,

  338. are you?

  339. For many of you,

  340. second language is English.

  341. You're not at that stage

  342. where you think

  343. and you speak

  344. and you dream

  345. and you pray

  346. and your heart language

  347. becomes English.

  348. You're not there yet.

  349. But when it comes up to you,

  350. it will be

  351. the moment of the state

  352. of Cance.

  353. Because what does it say?

  354. It means that

  355. in terms of your identity,

  356. and perhaps in terms

  357. of your allegiance,

  358. they've changed me.

  359. Now these people

  360. here in Isaiah 19,

  361. they've not moved

  362. out of Egypt.

  363. And yet,

  364. they are speaking Hebrew.

  365. And here it is

  366. a representative

  367. of a change of allegiance.

  368. Something is going on

  369. in the inside

  370. that is represented

  371. by a different language.

  372. We've discussed today

  373. and we talk about

  374. totally a change of allegiance

  375. in my life

  376. or your life.

  377. and where you're trying

  378. to follow

  379. after other things.

  380. And you're trying

  381. to find your fulfillment

  382. and your happiness

  383. and then you turn

  384. and you start

  385. worshipping God.

  386. Now it's unlikely

  387. that that's going to

  388. be marked

  389. by a change of language.

  390. We continue to speak

  391. the language we speak.

  392. But what is helpful

  393. in this passage

  394. is there are four markers

  395. which show

  396. that there's a change

  397. of allegiance going on.

  398. And I think

  399. the four markers

  400. are helpful

  401. because they show us

  402. what does a change

  403. of allegiance

  404. look like in our lives.

  405. It's not an exhaustive list.

  406. But there are four things

  407. that Isaiah

  408. is pointing to

  409. and let's use them

  410. as a checklist

  411. and say who might follow it.

  412. So let's look at

  413. the four together.

  414. It's represented

  415. in verse 19

  416. by the altar.

  417. Number one.

  418. There's an altar.

  419. The altar

  420. that the Egyptians

  421. would have put up

  422. this monument.

  423. It was for sale

  424. as a sign

  425. and a witness

  426. to the Lord.

  427. And we are told

  428. that back in Joshua 22

  429. we read about

  430. the tribes of Israel

  431. who settled

  432. on the far side

  433. of the Jordan River.

  434. They built an altar

  435. as a witness

  436. to the fact

  437. that they belonged.

  438. To the fact

  439. that they belonged

  440. to the people

  441. of the Lord

  442. even though

  443. they were separated

  444. from the other tribes

  445. by this body of water.

  446. And the altar

  447. represented a sign

  448. and a witness

  449. that they belonged

  450. to God.

  451. Now we don't build

  452. holders today.

  453. What do we do?

  454. What we do

  455. are signs.

  456. We are signed

  457. aren't we

  458. at the time

  459. of our baptism.

  460. We are signed

  461. in the name

  462. of the Trinity.

  463. You are baptized

  464. into the name

  465. of the Triune God.

  466. What is happening

  467. at baptism?

  468. We are saying

  469. that I

  470. if we are being baptized

  471. all my children

  472. if they are being

  473. baptized

  474. they belong

  475. to the Triune God.

  476. That their

  477. ultimate allegiance

  478. is to the Lord.

  479. And when we

  480. take the bread

  481. and the wine

  482. it is a cup

  483. of our allegiance.

  484. It is not just

  485. a ritual.

  486. That when you

  487. eat that bread

  488. and drink that cup

  489. you are saying

  490. I belong to the Lord.

  491. My allegiance

  492. is ultimately to Him.

  493. And that is

  494. a pretty significant

  495. and serious thing

  496. to say.

  497. Actually

  498. that what He says

  499. goes in my life.

  500. That is a sign

  501. and a witness

  502. to the Lord

  503. that we belong

  504. to Him.

  505. The second

  506. is this

  507. marker of prayer.

  508. Look at verse 20.

  509. It says

  510. Egyptians will

  511. cry out

  512. to the Lord.

  513. They will cry out

  514. to the Lord.

  515. Why?

  516. Because they are now

  517. in a relationship

  518. with the Lord.

  519. And their allegiance

  520. has been marked

  521. by this altar.

  522. They are in a relationship

  523. and it is a speaking

  524. relationship.

  525. But because they now

  526. belong to the Lord

  527. they enter into this

  528. fellowship with Him.

  529. So that now

  530. as dangers come

  531. and problems

  532. need to be solved

  533. they don't do it

  534. just by human

  535. self-confidence.

  536. as the problem

  537. was in the judgment.

  538. And now

  539. by prayer

  540. and crying out

  541. to the Lord

  542. the Lord responds.

  543. And the question

  544. for you and I

  545. is what is our

  546. physical call

  547. when we are in need?

  548. And I suspect

  549. the inclination

  550. is not

  551. to call

  552. on the name

  553. of the Lord.

  554. The temptation

  555. has got a

  556. place to

  557. spiritual orphans

  558. to think that

  559. well

  560. we are alone.

  561. No one can

  562. help us.

  563. We can fix

  564. our problems

  565. ourselves

  566. but that is not

  567. Bible tells us

  568. at all

  569. is it?

  570. That God

  571. through His grace

  572. for us

  573. in Jesus Christ

  574. we are not

  575. orphans.

  576. Well that's just

  577. as well isn't it

  578. because you cannot

  579. fix your problems.

  580. But if you

  581. were called

  582. on the name

  583. of the Lord

  584. you are not

  585. an orphan

  586. you are a son

  587. or a doer

  588. in the living

  589. God

  590. and therefore

  591. He delights

  592. to hear us

  593. cry out to Him.

  594. The first

  595. port of call

  596. for the believer

  597. when there is

  598. a need

  599. is to pray

  600. and say

  601. God I cannot

  602. fix this.

  603. I cannot

  604. fix this

  605. when you step

  606. in and do it.

  607. And God

  608. delights

  609. when we cry

  610. to Him

  611. in helpless

  612. dependence.

  613. Thirdly we see

  614. the mark of

  615. Revelation

  616. verse 21

  617. that God

  618. would reveal

  619. Himself

  620. to His people

  621. and what we

  622. see here

  623. is that God

  624. is always

  625. the initiator

  626. of this

  627. relationship.

  628. That God

  629. reveals Himself

  630. and only

  631. when God

  632. reveals Himself

  633. to the

  634. Egyptians

  635. know the

  636. Lord.

  637. Christianity

  638. is not about

  639. you searching

  640. for God.

  641. It is not

  642. about you

  643. searching for

  644. God but

  645. it is about

  646. you responding

  647. to God's

  648. reveals of truth

  649. because God

  650. has revealed

  651. Himself in the

  652. Bible.

  653. In His

  654. Word.

  655. You don't

  656. have to go

  657. searching for

  658. God because

  659. He says

  660. read this

  661. and you

  662. will find

  663. me.

  664. You will

  665. find out

  666. who I am.

  667. And the

  668. Egyptians

  669. will understand

  670. that.

  671. That revelation

  672. will be given

  673. so that they

  674. would have a

  675. relationship.

  676. So that they

  677. would know

  678. to whom they

  679. are speaking.

  680. And so if

  681. their allegiance

  682. has changed

  683. God's Word

  684. has become

  685. your truth.

  686. You love

  687. the Bible.

  688. He's worried

  689. about who He

  690. is.

  691. What He's

  692. done.

  693. And about

  694. who we are.

  695. The fourth

  696. marker is there

  697. in verse 21

  698. is worship.

  699. The word

  700. that is used

  701. literally there

  702. is to serve.

  703. And it

  704. points to

  705. what our

  706. worship really

  707. is.

  708. Our service

  709. of God

  710. is 24

  711. hours,

  712. seven days

  713. a week.

  714. The Bible

  715. picture of

  716. worship is

  717. not just

  718. what we do

  719. here every

  720. morning from

  721. 10.30 to

  722. 11.40.

  723. But what we

  724. do in the

  725. rest of our

  726. lives.

  727. As referred

  728. to us,

  729. vows to

  730. the Lord.

  731. But if

  732. your allegiance

  733. has changed,

  734. you now

  735. understand that

  736. your life is

  737. now primarily

  738. about serving

  739. God, not

  740. yourself.

  741. It's not

  742. even serving

  743. your boss

  744. at work.

  745. But life

  746. is about

  747. serving God.

  748. So four

  749. markers.

  750. Four markers

  751. have changed

  752. allegiance.

  753. But what is

  754. additionally

  755. surprising is

  756. actually the

  757. words in

  758. Isaiah 19

  759. form really

  760. like a

  761. Bible

  762. overview.

  763. The second

  764. Old Testament

  765. survey,

  766. Isaiah 19.

  767. Think about

  768. the altars

  769. and the

  770. monuments.

  771. What do

  772. they remind

  773. you of?

  774. They remind

  775. you of the

  776. Israelites in

  777. the book of

  778. Joshua.

  779. And they're

  780. crying out

  781. for deliverance.

  782. What does

  783. that remind

  784. you of?

  785. When did

  786. the Israelites

  787. cry out for

  788. deliverance?

  789. Well it

  790. again reminds

  791. you of the

  792. judges,

  793. doesn't it?

  794. They again

  795. and again

  796. cry out to

  797. God for

  798. deliverance

  799. and God

  800. sent a

  801. judge to

  802. deliverance

  803. and receive

  804. them.

  805. The

  806. don't

  807. sacrifice

  808. and grain

  809. offerings

  810. and vows

  811. reminds you

  812. of what?

  813. Well the

  814. book of

  815. Leviticus.

  816. And so

  817. the thing

  818. is these

  819. early chapters

  820. from the

  821. Old Testament

  822. who was the

  823. main character?

  824. The main

  825. character was

  826. Israel.

  827. But why

  828. Isaiah

  829. was

  830. done in

  831. Isaiah 19

  832. is he

  833. switched

  834. that.

  835. The main

  836. character of

  837. these events

  838. that were

  839. true of

  840. Israel

  841. he says

  842. they are

  843. now true

  844. of

  845. Egypt.

  846. And the

  847. people who

  848. would have

  849. been struck

  850. by God

  851. in judgment

  852. they are

  853. now going

  854. to be

  855. healed

  856. by God.

  857. So the

  858. striking of

  859. Egypt and

  860. the subsequent

  861. healing of

  862. Egypt is

  863. going to lead

  864. to the

  865. conclusion of

  866. this chapter

  867. which would

  868. seem absolutely

  869. impossible.

  870. Look at the

  871. last few

  872. verses.

  873. Verse 23.

  874. In that

  875. day there

  876. will be a

  877. highway from

  878. Egypt to

  879. land to

  880. Syria.

  881. Assyria

  882. will come

  883. into

  884. Egypt and

  885. Egypt into

  886. Assyria and

  887. the Egyptians

  888. will worship

  889. with the

  890. Assyrians.

  891. And in

  892. that day

  893. Israel will

  894. be third

  895. with Egypt

  896. and Assyria.

  897. A blessing

  898. in the midst

  899. of the

  900. earth whom

  901. the Lord

  902. of hosts

  903. has

  904. blessed

  905. the Egypt

  906. my people

  907. and Assyria

  908. the work

  909. of my

  910. hands and

  911. Israel

  912. my inheritance.

  913. And right

  914. here we see

  915. the wedding

  916. ring being

  917. melted down

  918. and made

  919. into three

  920. rings.

  921. It's an

  922. astounding

  923. picture.

  924. And so

  925. thirdly

  926. let's

  927. see the

  928. astounding

  929. scandalous

  930. act of

  931. global

  932. blessing.

  933. You see

  934. Egypt and

  935. Assyria

  936. they weren't

  937. just the

  938. patch of

  939. enemies of

  940. Israel.

  941. They hated

  942. Israel's guts.

  943. They couldn't

  944. stand each

  945. other.

  946. And here we

  947. see that we

  948. look at verse

  949. 23.

  950. You see this

  951. day when

  952. they're not

  953. only found

  954. to a point

  955. where they

  956. put up

  957. with each

  958. other but

  959. now they're

  960. in a

  961. delight of

  962. each other

  963. and enjoy

  964. one another.

  965. It's the

  966. peaceful

  967. kingdom all

  968. over again.

  969. It's

  970. Isaiah

  971. 11

  972. which is

  973. portrayed by

  974. animals of

  975. a wolf and

  976. a lamb but

  977. now it's

  978. nations.

  979. And in this

  980. kingdom Egypt is

  981. God's people

  982. and Assyria is

  983. handiwork and

  984. Israel is

  985. inheritance.

  986. And the

  987. kingdom is no

  988. longer defined

  989. ethnically or

  990. nationally.

  991. In this

  992. kingdom God's

  993. people are no

  994. longer defined

  995. racially or by

  996. their ethnicity.

  997. city.

  998. But now we

  999. have a spreading

  1000. kingdom of

  1001. peace.

  1002. In verse

  1003. 18 it's a

  1004. few cities.

  1005. In verse

  1006. 19 it's a

  1007. whole country.

  1008. But at the

  1009. end of the

  1010. chapter it's

  1011. three nations.

  1012. And I would

  1013. suggest to you

  1014. that those

  1015. nations represent

  1016. all nations.

  1017. It's a picture

  1018. of God's peace

  1019. coming to the

  1020. hell of the

  1021. world.

  1022. Here's the

  1023. question.

  1024. How can this

  1025. be?

  1026. How can it

  1027. be true?

  1028. How can God

  1029. melt down the

  1030. wedding ring and

  1031. give it to

  1032. three nations?

  1033. In fact to

  1034. all nations.

  1035. Egyptians.

  1036. How can God

  1037. come to you

  1038. and to me and

  1039. say you are

  1040. now my people?

  1041. You are my

  1042. inheritance.

  1043. How can he

  1044. do that?

  1045. You know

  1046. don't you?

  1047. We may not

  1048. be Egyptians

  1049. but we have

  1050. that same

  1051. kind of

  1052. attitude.

  1053. That's

  1054. represented by

  1055. pride in

  1056. every single

  1057. one of our

  1058. hearts.

  1059. So how can

  1060. self-confident

  1061. proud Egyptians

  1062. or people like

  1063. us be treated

  1064. now as God's

  1065. people?

  1066. God.

  1067. And in

  1068. verse 20

  1069. I give

  1070. the clue.

  1071. He refers to

  1072. them crying

  1073. out and God

  1074. giving a

  1075. saviour who

  1076. will rescue

  1077. them.

  1078. But I

  1079. think Isaiah

  1080. wants to be

  1081. more specific.

  1082. Look at

  1083. verse 22.

  1084. And the

  1085. Lord will

  1086. strike Egypt.

  1087. Strike

  1088. him and

  1089. heath.

  1090. Isaiah

  1091. speaks of

  1092. Egyptians

  1093. turning to

  1094. the Lord

  1095. and repenting

  1096. but God

  1097. is still a

  1098. God of

  1099. justice.

  1100. It's not

  1101. that when

  1102. God puts

  1103. his forgiveness

  1104. hat on

  1105. he kind

  1106. of forgets

  1107. the justice

  1108. thing.

  1109. God cannot

  1110. pretend that

  1111. Egypt hasn't

  1112. sinned.

  1113. God cannot

  1114. pretend that

  1115. you haven't

  1116. sinned.

  1117. His heart

  1118. longs to

  1119. forgive but

  1120. our sin

  1121. needs to be

  1122. punished.

  1123. And the

  1124. punishment

  1125. needs to be

  1126. taken by

  1127. someone.

  1128. So how

  1129. can self-confident

  1130. proud defiant

  1131. people like

  1132. the Egyptians

  1133. and like me

  1134. be treated as

  1135. God's people

  1136. and the

  1137. astounding

  1138. answer is

  1139. because of

  1140. the one

  1141. who was

  1142. struck as

  1143. the one

  1144. who was

  1145. struck.

  1146. That was

  1147. his word

  1148. and then

  1149. healed.

  1150. He is

  1151. the one

  1152. who was

  1153. struck so

  1154. that you

  1155. and I

  1156. could be

  1157. healed.

  1158. Let me

  1159. read you

  1160. from Isaiah

  1161. 53.

  1162. That's

  1163. what he

  1164. says.

  1165. Surely

  1166. he is,

  1167. it says

  1168. this,

  1169. he's

  1170. despised

  1171. and rejected

  1172. by men

  1173. amount of

  1174. sorrows and

  1175. acquainted

  1176. with grief.

  1177. And

  1178. as one

  1179. from whom

  1180. men

  1181. had their

  1182. faces,

  1183. he was

  1184. despised

  1185. and we

  1186. esteemed

  1187. him not

  1188. surely he

  1189. has borne

  1190. our griefs

  1191. and carried

  1192. our sorrows,

  1193. yet we

  1194. esteemed him

  1195. stricken,

  1196. smitten

  1197. by God

  1198. and afflicted.

  1199. And he

  1200. uses those

  1201. exact same

  1202. words.

  1203. he was

  1204. pierced

  1205. for our

  1206. transgressions,

  1207. he was

  1208. crushed for

  1209. our

  1210. iniquities,

  1211. upon him

  1212. he was

  1213. the

  1214. chastised

  1215. from the

  1216. broadest

  1217. peace,

  1218. and by

  1219. his

  1220. wounds

  1221. we

  1222. are

  1223. healed,

  1224. same

  1225. words,

  1226. Isaiah

  1227. 19.

  1228. One

  1229. will be

  1230. struck so

  1231. that some

  1232. can be

  1233. healed.

  1234. Of course,

  1235. Isaiah

  1236. 53 is

  1237. talking of

  1238. the Lord

  1239. Jesus,

  1240. isn't it?

  1241. Who came

  1242. into this

  1243. world and

  1244. was struck

  1245. by God,

  1246. and smitten

  1247. by him,

  1248. and was

  1249. afflicted

  1250. by him

  1251. on the

  1252. cross,

  1253. struck by

  1254. God on

  1255. the cross,

  1256. so that

  1257. Egyptians,

  1258. and Assyrians,

  1259. and Brits,

  1260. and Europeans,

  1261. and Africans,

  1262. and Asians,

  1263. and every

  1264. other nation

  1265. could be

  1266. healed.

  1267. Do we

  1268. deserve it?

  1269. Of course

  1270. we don't.

  1271. Is he

  1272. talking about

  1273. everyone in

  1274. every nation,

  1275. they will be

  1276. healed,

  1277. they will be

  1278. forgiven?

  1279. No,

  1280. he's talking

  1281. about all

  1282. those who

  1283. put their

  1284. faith in

  1285. the

  1286. suffering

  1287. servant.

  1288. Who put

  1289. their

  1290. faith in

  1291. the

  1292. one who

  1293. is

  1294. struck,

  1295. so that

  1296. you

  1297. can be

  1298. healed.

  1299. So that

  1300. we can

  1301. be adopted

  1302. into his

  1303. handily and

  1304. forgiven,

  1305. so that

  1306. we can

  1307. now be

  1308. called his

  1309. people,

  1310. and his

  1311. handily work

  1312. and his

  1313. inheritance,

  1314. so that

  1315. everyone who

  1316. trusts in

  1317. Jesus Christ,

  1318. regardless of

  1319. ethnicity,

  1320. or nationality,

  1321. or background,

  1322. knows that when

  1323. they read the

  1324. words of the

  1325. apostle in the

  1326. New Testament,

  1327. that we're

  1328. about to

  1329. read,

  1330. he's talking

  1331. about us,

  1332. he's talking

  1333. about every

  1334. believer,

  1335. so that Peter

  1336. says,

  1337. you are a

  1338. chosen race.

  1339. You are a

  1340. royal priesthood,

  1341. you are a

  1342. holy nation,

  1343. a people by

  1344. his own

  1345. possession,

  1346. that you may

  1347. proclaim the

  1348. excellencies of

  1349. him who

  1350. called you out

  1351. of darkness

  1352. into his

  1353. marvellous

  1354. light.

  1355. Once you

  1356. were not a

  1357. people,

  1358. but now you

  1359. are a

  1360. people.

  1361. Once you

  1362. have not

  1363. received

  1364. mercy,

  1365. but now

  1366. you have

  1367. received

  1368. mercy.

  1369. Isaiah

  1370. is a

  1371. family

  1372. of

  1373. Gentiles

  1374. foresaw

  1375. the day

  1376. of

  1377. scandalous

  1378. global

  1379. blessing,

  1380. a day

  1381. made

  1382. possible

  1383. by the

  1384. striking

  1385. of

  1386. Jesus

  1387. for the

  1388. healing

  1389. of the

  1390. nations,

  1391. so that

  1392. we as

  1393. believers

  1394. of Jesus

  1395. Christ,

  1396. we are

  1397. referred to

  1398. today as

  1399. the chosen

  1400. people,

  1401. the royal

  1402. priesthood,

  1403. the holy

  1404. nation.

  1405. Let me

  1406. give you

  1407. two

  1408. applications,

  1409. one that

  1410. has got

  1411. to do

  1412. with

  1413. identity,

  1414. and one

  1415. that has

  1416. got to

  1417. do

  1418. with

  1419. relationships.

  1420. All

  1421. of the

  1422. churches,

  1423. all of

  1424. the early

  1425. churches

  1426. in the

  1427. Mediterranean

  1428. world

  1429. were

  1430. multi-Afric.

  1431. All of

  1432. them were.

  1433. They

  1434. consisted

  1435. of at

  1436. least Jews

  1437. and Gentiles,

  1438. but many

  1439. of them

  1440. were Afroans

  1441. and Asians

  1442. as well.

  1443. And just

  1444. as we

  1445. saw as

  1446. Peter

  1447. refers to

  1448. Christians,

  1449. he refers

  1450. to us

  1451. as a

  1452. holy

  1453. nation.

  1454. Literally,

  1455. the

  1456. New

  1457. Testament

  1458. calls us

  1459. a

  1460. neo-ethnic

  1461. for those

  1462. who are

  1463. in Christ.

  1464. That

  1465. means that

  1466. our

  1467. relationships

  1468. to each

  1469. other in

  1470. Christ and

  1471. our

  1472. relationship

  1473. to other

  1474. believers in

  1475. Christ are

  1476. actually to be

  1477. stronger than

  1478. our relationships

  1479. to our

  1480. racial or

  1481. ethnic or

  1482. national group.

  1483. That means

  1484. if you are

  1485. a Christian,

  1486. you are

  1487. not to

  1488. primarily

  1489. consider

  1490. yourself

  1491. as

  1492. British,

  1493. Irish,

  1494. Welsh,

  1495. Scottish,

  1496. American,

  1497. Iranian,

  1498. Nigerian.

  1499. You are

  1500. not primarily

  1501. Anglo,

  1502. you are not

  1503. primarily

  1504. black,

  1505. you are not

  1506. primarily Asian,

  1507. you are

  1508. citizens of

  1509. God's

  1510. nation,

  1511. and that

  1512. is your

  1513. primary

  1514. identity.

  1515. That's a good

  1516. question to ask,

  1517. God's

  1518. to say who

  1519. are you,

  1520. to ask

  1521. yourself who

  1522. am I,

  1523. is that

  1524. where I

  1525. would begin?

  1526. I belong

  1527. to the

  1528. new

  1529. ethnic,

  1530. I'm part of

  1531. God's

  1532. nation,

  1533. it's

  1534. challenging

  1535. to examine

  1536. ourselves.

  1537. The implication

  1538. of that,

  1539. the New

  1540. Testament

  1541. teases out,

  1542. it says that

  1543. the only real

  1544. division in

  1545. the human

  1546. race,

  1547. there is

  1548. only one

  1549. real division

  1550. in the

  1551. human race,

  1552. and that

  1553. is the

  1554. division of

  1555. faith.

  1556. And so

  1557. God

  1558. understands,

  1559. as God

  1560. sees it,

  1561. there are

  1562. only really

  1563. two

  1564. nations

  1565. there.

  1566. There are

  1567. two peoples,

  1568. there are

  1569. those who

  1570. trust in

  1571. Christ,

  1572. and those

  1573. who don't

  1574. trust in

  1575. Christ.

  1576. And that

  1577. is why,

  1578. for example,

  1579. God forbids

  1580. marriage between

  1581. a believer

  1582. and an

  1583. unbeliever,

  1584. between a

  1585. Christian and

  1586. somebody who

  1587. is not a

  1588. Christian,

  1589. God forbids

  1590. that marriage,

  1591. because that

  1592. is the only

  1593. way a

  1594. Christian can

  1595. marry you

  1596. outside your

  1597. people.

  1598. faith and

  1599. unbelief,

  1600. they are

  1601. the

  1602. dividers.

  1603. So let

  1604. me ask you

  1605. this,

  1606. if you

  1607. would rather

  1608. have your

  1609. close friend

  1610. or family

  1611. member marry

  1612. someone of

  1613. the same

  1614. race,

  1615. or the

  1616. same

  1617. nationality,

  1618. instead of

  1619. a strong

  1620. Christian of

  1621. a different

  1622. race,

  1623. well,

  1624. your racial

  1625. prejudice has

  1626. not been

  1627. dealt with,

  1628. and you've

  1629. not understood

  1630. the gospel.

  1631. Let me ask

  1632. you that

  1633. again.

  1634. If you

  1635. would rather

  1636. have a

  1637. close friend

  1638. or family

  1639. member marry

  1640. someone of

  1641. the same

  1642. race or

  1643. nationality,

  1644. instead of

  1645. a strong

  1646. Christian of

  1647. a different

  1648. race,

  1649. you've

  1650. got to

  1651. listen to

  1652. the gospel.

  1653. And that

  1654. new identity

  1655. of the new

  1656. ethnic,

  1657. leads us

  1658. secondly to

  1659. being a

  1660. blessing on

  1661. the whole

  1662. earth.

  1663. He says

  1664. at the

  1665. end,

  1666. at the

  1667. very end

  1668. of the

  1669. passage,

  1670. he says

  1671. in Isaiah

  1672. 19,

  1673. they will

  1674. be blessed

  1675. by Egypt,

  1676. my people,

  1677. and Assyria,

  1678. the work of

  1679. my hands.

  1680. I came home

  1681. last week,

  1682. I saw a

  1683. land of

  1684. it,

  1685. you know,

  1686. one of

  1687. those kind

  1688. of plague

  1689. things,

  1690. and they're

  1691. called

  1692. Ireland,

  1693. the land

  1694. of a

  1695. thousand,

  1696. the land

  1697. of a

  1698. hundred

  1699. thousand

  1700. welcomes.

  1701. I'm not

  1702. sure my

  1703. aim was,

  1704. show me

  1705. that.

  1706. The land

  1707. of a

  1708. hundred

  1709. thousand

  1710. welcomes.

  1711. That's

  1712. good,

  1713. isn't it?

  1714. But I

  1715. want to

  1716. say to

  1717. you,

  1718. the church

  1719. should be

  1720. the church

  1721. of a

  1722. hundred

  1723. thousand

  1724. welcomes.

  1725. And that

  1726. will cover

  1727. a whole

  1728. range of

  1729. people and

  1730. groups.

  1731. This is

  1732. a quote

  1733. from John

  1734. Piper.

  1735. He's

  1736. addressing

  1737. our attitude

  1738. to Muslims.

  1739. Here's what he

  1740. says,

  1741. maybe even as we

  1742. speak,

  1743. the population

  1744. of the planet

  1745. is passing

  1746. seven billion.

  1747. And of those

  1748. seven billion,

  1749. well over a

  1750. billion are

  1751. Muslims.

  1752. And as you

  1753. know,

  1754. tens of

  1755. thousands

  1756. live in our

  1757. neighbourhoods,

  1758. and we

  1759. are glad

  1760. they've

  1761. come.

  1762. Biblical

  1763. Christians do

  1764. not have a

  1765. parochial

  1766. mindset that

  1767. wants to

  1768. keep non-Christians

  1769. out of our

  1770. neighbourhoods.

  1771. Christians have

  1772. a kingdom

  1773. mindset that

  1774. rejoices when

  1775. King Jesus

  1776. brings non-Christians

  1777. who had once

  1778. been far away

  1779. near to the

  1780. crossfall.

  1781. Christians do

  1782. not live to

  1783. escape non-believers,

  1784. we live to

  1785. reach non-believers.

  1786. Across the

  1787. ocean and

  1788. across the

  1789. street.

  1790. Now what

  1791. mindset do

  1792. you and I

  1793. have?

  1794. I don't

  1795. know what

  1796. your

  1797. neighbors

  1798. alike.

  1799. But there

  1800. might not

  1801. be people

  1802. that you

  1803. naturally

  1804. connect

  1805. with.

  1806. But you

  1807. see, the

  1808. gospel keeps

  1809. pushing us

  1810. out, doesn't

  1811. it?

  1812. Of a

  1813. parochial

  1814. mindset to

  1815. a kingdom

  1816. mindset.

  1817. And the

  1818. gospel keeps

  1819. pushing us

  1820. out and

  1821. saying, you

  1822. know he's

  1823. melted down

  1824. the rain.

  1825. And now

  1826. every nation,

  1827. and God is

  1828. going to call

  1829. people from

  1830. every nation

  1831. to this new

  1832. ethnic.

  1833. the gospel

  1834. reminds us

  1835. that God

  1836. announced that

  1837. Egypt will

  1838. be my

  1839. people, and

  1840. Syria will

  1841. be my

  1842. handiwork, and

  1843. Israel will

  1844. be my

  1845. inheritance.

  1846. And you

  1847. and I are

  1848. not, we

  1849. are not to

  1850. live to

  1851. escape

  1852. non-believers,

  1853. we are to

  1854. live to reach

  1855. out to the

  1856. gospel.

  1857. The gospel of

  1858. the one who

  1859. was struck, so

  1860. that all nations

  1861. could be

  1862. healed, that

  1863. people of all

  1864. nations could be

  1865. brought into

  1866. one family,

  1867. all as a

  1868. part of

  1869. God's

  1870. stentless

  1871. act of

  1872. blessing.

  1873. Let's pray.
