  1. Well, this afternoon, we're going to look at this passage, and before we do, I just want to put it into some sort of context quickly, because John, up to this point in his gospel has been emphasizing that salvation is a work of God.

  2. When Jesus spoke to Nicodemus back in chapter 3, you may remember, he said, you must be born again.

  3. You must be born of the Spirit, and only God can do that.

  4. It's a divine work.

  5. Salvation is a divine work to which man or a woman are not able to add anything to.

  6. It's solely God.

  7. And while it's right that John emphasizes salvation as the sovereign work of God,

  8. John also emphasizes the necessity of the sinner's faith,

  9. and the fact that the sinner must believe.

  10. At the end of John, chapter 20, verse 31,

    John 20:31

  11. John is very explicit as to why he actually wrote this gospel.

  12. He says, he's written these words so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,

  13. and that by believing you may have life in his name.

  14. In other words, John is writing with the hope that as we read his words,

  15. we will see Jesus for who he really is and believe in him.

  16. And I think it's interesting that John uses the word belief over 90 times in his book.

  17. And belief is not only the theme of John's gospel, but it is also the essence of the Christian faith.

  18. One must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

  19. And whenever we look outside of Christian faith,

  20. we find that all the other religions have one thing in common that is not taught in the Bible.

  21. They teach that salvation does not belong solely to God,

  22. that people themselves are actually able to accomplish a righteous relationship with God

  23. and achieve salvation from judgment on their own.

  24. In other words, false religions provide a platform for men and women to rule themselves,

  25. to sit on the young throne of their lives and decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong.

  26. However, here in the Gospel of John,

  27. John is emphatic that there is only one way to have sin forgiven.

  28. There is only one way to get to heaven.

  29. And that is by believing in the work and the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  30. And for those who do not, there is no salvation.

  31. There is only eternal damnation and torment.

  32. Now, in the opening verses of John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  33. John made the statement that when Jesus came from heaven,

  34. he came to his own people, but generally as a rule, they didn't receive him.

  35. And we see throughout the Gospel of John that there are people who refuse to believe Jesus.

  36. Some receive him while others reject him.

  37. And that is what we see here in the healing of the royal official's son.

  38. As the story is meant to show us the contrast between a false faith and a true faith.

  39. In fact, in many ways, the story expands on the statement of John's at the end of chapter 2,

  40. where he said,

  41. Jesus did not need any testimony about men and women,

  42. because he already knew what was in each person.

  43. Jesus knew what men and women were thinking and feeling,

  44. what was really and truly in their hearts.

  45. Now, in our passage here in verse 43,

  46. Jesus returns to Galilee from Samaria.

  47. You'll remember that Jesus had stopped off at the well in Samaria,

  48. and he'd met the woman,

  49. and he'd been received by a large number of people who believed in him,

  50. and many, many people were saved before he left.

  51. However, Jesus knew that when he arrived in Galilee,

  52. his reception would be very different from Samaria.

  53. Verse 44, John uses a proverb to make a very specific statement,

  54. that a prophet has no honor in his own country.

  55. And the fact that that proverb rings so true

  56. is a testimony to the utterly perverse state of mankind,

  57. that men and women hate things that are familiar to them.

  58. In fact, they breathe contempt in us.

  59. Their problem was this, though, his message.

  60. It was offensive to them.

  61. They loved the miracles of Jesus,

  62. but they hated the message that he brought.

  63. And if we look at verse 45,

  64. a simple reading gives us the impression

  65. that Jesus' reputation was spreading like wildfire.

  66. They welcomed him.

  67. They had all seen what he had done at the Passover festival.

  68. You see, Jesus had been performing miracles there,

  69. and we know that he used those miracles

  70. in order to show his credentials

  71. as the one who had actually been sent from heaven.

  72. But you know, as I read this,

  73. I wondered how seriously

  74. the Lord Jesus really accepted

  75. the enthusiasm of the Galileans as he arrived.

  76. We've already been told that Jesus knew

  77. what was in the heart and mind of every man and woman.

  78. And the fact is,

  79. their welcome was superficial.

  80. To say they welcomed him

  81. has a sort of ironic feel to it.

  82. And if we have any doubt

  83. about how Jesus felt about the welcome he received,

  84. we all have to read his response

  85. to the man who approached him there in verse 48.

  86. Unless you, and that's plural,

  87. unless you people see signs and wonders,

  88. you'll never believe.

  89. This man is described to us as a royal official.

  90. He was most likely a member

  91. of the court of Herod Antipas.

  92. And he had walked 25 miles

  93. to find Jesus in Cana

  94. because we're told his son was sick and close to death.

  95. This is a situation that every parent can empathize with.

  96. A sick child.

  97. And not just sick, but dying.

  98. And I think we can assume

  99. that the official would have had

  100. access to all the known remedies of the day.

  101. I mean, he had servants,

  102. so apparently he had money.

  103. He was a royal official in the court,

  104. so he would have had some access

  105. to the physicians in the court.

  106. And I'm quite sure

  107. that all the finest medical advice

  108. had been tried,

  109. and still the child woke up every morning

  110. in a worse state than the day before.

  111. And we see there in verse 47

  112. that the official had heard the news

  113. that Jesus had returned to Cana.

  114. So he left his home in search of Jesus

  115. and with a hope that Jesus would help his son.

  116. And when he finds Jesus in verse 47,

  117. he implores Jesus to return home

  118. and heal his son.

  119. Many translations say

  120. that he begged,

  121. he begged Jesus to come.

  122. Again, in verse 48,

  123. notice how the reply of Jesus

  124. was short and sharp.

  125. It's almost like a rebuke.

  126. Notice, too,

  127. that he expands his audience

  128. from just the official alone

  129. to all the Galileans who were there.

  130. Unless you people,

  131. he's saying in the plural.

  132. You see, Jesus is saying

  133. to the official and to the crowd,

  134. you are nothing but curiosity seekers.

  135. You have no interest

  136. in the message that I bring.

  137. You see, it was like going to the circus

  138. for many of them.

  139. They thought of him

  140. as a sort of super magician.

  141. But Jesus knew

  142. that the miracles on their own

  143. had no lasting, eternal effect.

  144. The people were pleased

  145. to see the miracles.

  146. In fact, they yearned

  147. to see the miracles.

  148. But they had no desire

  149. to recognize Jesus

  150. as Lord and Savior.

  151. And John makes it clear

  152. throughout the gospel

  153. that the human heart

  154. is so blinded by sin

  155. that not even miracles

  156. can produce a true

  157. and living faith.

  158. You remember Judas.

  159. He saw countless miracles.

  160. In fact,

  161. he performed miracles himself

  162. in the name of Jesus.

  163. But he didn't have

  164. a true and living faith.

  165. So Jesus knew

  166. that these miracles alone

  167. would not produce

  168. a sincere saving faith

  169. in the people.

  170. And John is showing us here

  171. that their faith

  172. is simply a manifestation

  173. of their enthusiasm.

  174. A faith produced

  175. by their enthusiasm

  176. over the miracles.

  177. And the problem

  178. is not an issue

  179. of having faith

  180. or not having faith.

  181. I mean, we all have faith

  182. as something

  183. to some degree or another.

  184. There are many people

  185. who call themselves Christians,

  186. but they still do

  187. and have a sincere faith.

  188. And we see this problem

  189. throughout the Bible,

  190. even in the Old Testament.

  191. It was one of the primary themes

  192. in the prophets.

  193. They spoke to a congregation

  194. who had the outward sign

  195. of circumcision,

  196. but they were lacking

  197. the inner reality

  198. that the circumcision

  199. was supposed to represent.

  200. These people looked forward

  201. to the day of the Lord.

  202. They were always talking

  203. about when the day

  204. the Lord would come

  205. and He would draw near to them

  206. and rescue them.

  207. But it was Amos

  208. and the other prophets

  209. who warned them

  210. of their folly.

  211. The prophets told them,

  212. You talk about

  213. the day of the Lord,

  214. but the day of the Lord

  215. is not going to be good for you.

  216. In fact,

  217. it is going to be

  218. a terrible day for you

  219. because your faith

  220. in the Lord

  221. is not real.

  222. You talk about

  223. your faith in the Lord,

  224. but look around.

  225. You are unfaithful

  226. to the Lord.

  227. And that was the problem

  228. in the Old Testament.

  229. And it remained the problem

  230. even during the time of Jesus.

  231. His ministry began

  232. with the same warning

  233. over and over and over again

  234. throughout His teaching.

  235. He warns the people.

  236. You remember Jesus said,

  237. Many of you will say to me

  238. on that day,

  239. Lord,

  240. did we not drive out

  241. demons in your name?

  242. And I will say to you,

  243. depart from me.

  244. I never knew you.

  245. It was always a part

  246. of His public teaching.

  247. He spoke again and again

  248. about the hypocrisy

  249. of the Jews.

  250. And their faith

  251. was all posture

  252. and not a true

  253. and sincere trust

  254. in the grace

  255. and the mercy of God.

  256. And the distinction

  257. between true

  258. and false faith

  259. is a large,

  260. large part

  261. of the teaching

  262. of Jesus.

  263. I just think about

  264. all the parables

  265. and the illustrations

  266. that He used

  267. throughout the Gospels

  268. to illustrate false faith.

  269. the Pharisee,

  270. the tax collector,

  271. the prodigal son,

  272. the rich man

  273. and Lazarus,

  274. the narrow door,

  275. the wise and foolish virgins,

  276. and so on and so on.

  277. And just look at His teaching.

  278. In every case,

  279. without exception,

  280. the one who has

  281. the Lord's approval

  282. and is set before us

  283. as the true believer

  284. is the person

  285. in the lowly,

  286. humble position

  287. who simply acknowledges

  288. his need

  289. and cries out

  290. for mercy.

  291. And of course,

  292. in the end,

  293. we saw the manifestation

  294. of all the warnings.

  295. We actually saw

  296. the reality

  297. of false faith

  298. in action.

  299. It was the religious element,

  300. the upright,

  301. the respectable,

  302. who finally,

  303. in a frenzy

  304. of what they thought

  305. was religious zeal,

  306. murdered Jesus.

  307. Because of false faith,

  308. they murdered

  309. their own Messiah.

  310. And Jesus was always

  311. concerned about false faith

  312. because He did recognize

  313. that it's the easiest

  314. thing in the world

  315. to think of oneself

  316. as a Christian

  317. when one is not.

  318. Or to think of oneself

  319. as being at peace

  320. with God

  321. when one is not.

  322. Examine yourself

  323. to see whether you

  324. are in the faith,

  325. Paul writes.

  326. Again, he writes,

  327. let the one who thinks

  328. he is standing

  329. take heed

  330. lest he fall.

  331. Now, with regard

  332. to the official,

  333. at this point,

  334. he's not really interested

  335. in any of these issues.

  336. He simply wanted

  337. a healing

  338. for his son.

  339. He believed

  340. that Jesus

  341. had the power

  342. to grant his request.

  343. However,

  344. instead of tending

  345. the bedside

  346. or offering

  347. an obvious miracle,

  348. verse 50 says,

  349. Jesus simply said,

  350. Go,

  351. your son will live.

  352. The man took Jesus

  353. at his word

  354. and departed.

  355. The man took Jesus

  356. at his word

  357. and left for hope.

  358. I mean,

  359. imagine that.

  360. A 25-mile walk,

  361. 16 words with Jesus,

  362. and he turns around

  363. and starts walking

  364. back home.

  365. But as he left

  366. for home,

  367. we are seeing

  368. a man take steps

  369. of belief.

  370. And we know he believed

  371. because he left.

  372. There's no more pleading.

  373. There's no more desperation.

  374. He did what Jesus

  375. said to do.

  376. He just,

  377. he went home.

  378. It says he believed

  379. the words of Jesus.

  380. I mean,

  381. this man took Jesus

  382. at his word,

  383. which showed that

  384. he was not like

  385. the rest of the crowd

  386. who were only interested

  387. in seeing the signs

  388. of the wonders.

  389. And his trust,

  390. the faith that he put

  391. in the words of Jesus,

  392. led to the healing

  393. of his son

  394. at that exact hour

  395. some 25 miles away.

  396. See,

  397. the official

  398. was asked

  399. to believe

  400. without saying,

  401. to accept the words

  402. of Jesus

  403. without the visual

  404. assistance of a miracle.

  405. It may have been hard,

  406. but the man did it.

  407. And that's what

  408. made the difference.

  409. He believed,

  410. and then he received

  411. a miracle.

  412. You see,

  413. that phrase in verse 50,

  414. the man took Jesus

  415. at his word

  416. and departed,

  417. is an important phrase

  418. because as he accepted

  419. the words of Jesus

  420. and believed him,

  421. the omniscient,

  422. omnipresent power

  423. of the Lord Jesus

  424. was 25 miles away

  425. touching the body

  426. of that boy.

  427. And Jesus never left

  428. the spot

  429. that he was standing on.

  430. And as the official

  431. believed the words

  432. of Jesus,

  433. he moved from

  434. a detached,

  435. philosophical view

  436. of Jesus

  437. to a view

  438. that was focused

  439. on who Jesus

  440. really is.

  441. I mean,

  442. if you think about

  443. the crowd,

  444. the popular view

  445. was,

  446. look,

  447. we're not denying

  448. that Jesus

  449. is a miracle worker.

  450. We've all seen it.

  451. Everybody knows

  452. it's supernatural

  453. and no one denies it.

  454. But what is it

  455. that moves a man

  456. or a woman

  457. from having that

  458. detached view

  459. of an observer,

  460. a person who sees

  461. Jesus as a showman

  462. or a miracle worker

  463. to a view that sees

  464. the reality

  465. of who he is.

  466. And that catalyst

  467. for the transformation

  468. we see here

  469. is need.

  470. It's recognizing

  471. that one has

  472. a desperate need.

  473. In Matthew 9,

  474. Jesus said,

  475. the people who aren't sick

  476. aren't out looking

  477. for a doctor,

  478. are they?

  479. It's that moment

  480. when we recognize

  481. that we are in

  482. a desperate situation

  483. and that under

  484. our own power

  485. we have no remedy.

  486. It's when we recognize

  487. that left to our own devices

  488. and our own schemes,

  489. there is only failure

  490. on the horizon.

  491. We must admit

  492. our need for help.

  493. And you see,

  494. this sort of desperation

  495. will drive people.

  496. And it drove this man

  497. to Jesus.

  498. And when he found him,

  499. he begged Jesus

  500. to give life

  501. to his son.

  502. Now the difference

  503. between the Galileans

  504. and their superficial interest

  505. and this father

  506. who begged

  507. for the life

  508. of his son

  509. was desperation.

  510. Here was a man

  511. who loved his son.

  512. He was terrified

  513. that he would die.

  514. So he came

  515. to the Lord Jesus.

  516. He implored.

  517. He begged Jesus

  518. to come with him.

  519. Imagine that.

  520. A royal official

  521. walking 25 miles

  522. to beg

  523. a Nazarene carpenter

  524. for his help.

  525. What would you think

  526. his friends and colleagues

  527. would have said

  528. about that?

  529. But in his need,

  530. he has found

  531. a true friend.

  532. He's realized

  533. that this man,

  534. Jesus,

  535. could obviously

  536. do much,

  537. much more for him

  538. and his family

  539. than that.

  540. C.S. Lewis once wrote,

  541. You never know

  542. how much you really

  543. believe anything

  544. until its truth

  545. or its falsehood

  546. becomes a matter

  547. of life and death

  548. to you.

  549. And that was

  550. the problem

  551. for the Galileans.

  552. There was never

  553. an admission

  554. of terrible need.

  555. There was never

  556. a cry for help.

  557. I mean,

  558. they were in danger

  559. to be sure,

  560. but they never

  561. recognized it.

  562. They simply

  563. couldn't see it

  564. through their

  565. self-satisfied

  566. hearts and minds.

  567. They were happy

  568. with the status quo.

  569. While on the other

  570. hand,

  571. the royal official

  572. had come to realize

  573. that he needed

  574. Jesus desperately.

  575. And some of the

  576. Galatians were

  577. fascinated,

  578. as the people

  579. will be,

  580. with someone

  581. who can work

  582. miracles.

  583. But otherwise,

  584. the message,

  585. the meaning,

  586. the significance

  587. of Jesus Christ

  588. completely escaped

  589. them.

  590. It just passed

  591. them by.

  592. He was offering

  593. forgiveness and

  594. righteousness with

  595. God, but they

  596. were sure that

  597. they already had

  598. that.

  599. As we have said,

  600. the story throughout

  601. the ministry of

  602. Jesus was the same.

  603. Those who came

  604. to realize

  605. their great needs

  606. suddenly saw in

  607. Jesus the one

  608. who could help

  609. them when no

  610. one else was

  611. able to.

  612. But those who

  613. refused to admit

  614. their need,

  615. well, first they

  616. found Jesus

  617. interesting.

  618. Then they found

  619. him entertaining.

  620. Then he became

  621. irritating and

  622. finally he became

  623. infuriating.

  624. His message

  625. offended them.

  626. He required them

  627. to admit the

  628. darkness in their

  629. hearts, but they

  630. resented even the

  631. very suggestion

  632. that there was

  633. anything to admit.

  634. And what we see

  635. in this father is

  636. a man who learned

  637. as a result of

  638. his son being at

  639. death's door,

  640. that he had needs

  641. that only Jesus

  642. could deal with.

  643. You know, the

  644. Lord often brings

  645. men and women to

  646. faith in this way.

  647. Instead of a

  648. person immediately

  649. seeing themselves

  650. as a sinner

  651. in need of

  652. salvation,

  653. very often men

  654. and women are

  655. shown first to

  656. realize how weak

  657. and needy they

  658. truly are through

  659. some trouble or

  660. failure or through

  661. some extreme

  662. disappointment in

  663. life.

  664. But once that is

  665. acknowledged, the

  666. dam is broken

  667. and their need for

  668. other things,

  669. especially peace with

  670. God, could actually

  671. be acknowledged.

  672. And that seems to

  673. be what happened

  674. with this man.

  675. Verse 51 tells us

  676. that he was going

  677. home when his

  678. servants came out

  679. to meet him with

  680. the news that the

  681. boy was recovering.

  682. The miracle had

  683. happened.

  684. His faith had been

  685. rewarded.

  686. The boy was

  687. alive and well.

  688. And the official

  689. asked at what

  690. time the boy was

  691. revived and he

  692. found it was at

  693. the exact moment

  694. that Jesus spoke.

  695. Verse 53 there

  696. confirms that the

  697. official was a

  698. believer as he

  699. shared his faith

  700. with his whole

  701. house and they

  702. believed too.

  703. He turned into

  704. an evangelist just

  705. like that.

  706. He began by

  707. looking to Christ

  708. for the earthly

  709. life of his son.

  710. And he's ended

  711. up looking to

  712. Christ for his

  713. own eternal

  714. life and that

  715. of his family

  716. as well.

  717. And there is

  718. the distinction

  719. that the Lord

  720. Jesus makes

  721. between true

  722. and false

  723. faith.

  724. False faith

  725. looks to Jesus

  726. for what will

  727. interest and

  728. entertain.

  729. True faith on

  730. the other hand

  731. looks to Jesus

  732. in desperation

  733. and realizes that

  734. he and he

  735. alone is the

  736. only one who

  737. can give you

  738. what you must

  739. have for life

  740. now and

  741. forever.

  742. and with

  743. that recognition

  744. a person finds

  745. in Jesus a

  746. savior and a

  747. friend with

  748. every worth

  749. every ounce of

  750. loyalty and love

  751. that one can

  752. muster.

  753. Now at the

  754. start of the

  755. story the father

  756. had a sort of

  757. faith.

  758. He was a

  759. religious man.

  760. He believed

  761. that Jesus was a

  762. miracle worker and

  763. he sought out

  764. Jesus in the hope

  765. of receiving a

  766. miracle.

  767. But at that

  768. point he had

  769. no living trust

  770. in Jesus Christ

  771. because his

  772. heart had not

  773. yet been engaged

  774. by the Lord.

  775. And it was

  776. not until he

  777. believed the

  778. words of Jesus

  779. that his

  780. blindness cleared

  781. and he could

  782. see Jesus for

  783. who he really

  784. was.

  785. The son of

  786. God and the

  787. savior of the

  788. world.

  789. Now both the

  790. Galileans and the

  791. father had faith.

  792. I mean both

  793. states of mind

  794. are in the

  795. Bible and they

  796. are both called

  797. faith.

  798. But the

  799. difference between

  800. them is the

  801. difference between

  802. light and

  803. darkness, life and

  804. death, heaven and

  805. hell.

  806. I mean you

  807. can call Jesus

  808. the greatest

  809. miracle worker

  810. that ever lived.

  811. You can call him

  812. the greatest

  813. teacher that ever

  814. lived and you

  815. would be right.

  816. But you see

  817. John teaches us

  818. that that is not

  819. enough.

  820. John wants us to

  821. learn from his

  822. words that Jesus

  823. is the Christ,

  824. the son of the

  825. living God, the

  826. savior of the

  827. world and you

  828. must believe that

  829. who he is and

  830. what he came to

  831. do is the only

  832. way to receive

  833. eternal life.

  834. And that is the

  835. gift that God

  836. gives to those of

  837. us who believe

  838. in his son.

  839. Let me pray for

  840. us.

  841. Thank you.
