  1. And turn your Bibles to Psalm 38, sorry, Isaiah 38 and 39.

  2. ! It's on page 598 and 599.

  3. !

  4. In a story that takes the narrative back to the point before the story is reached.

  5. If you've any idea, what on earth is he talking about?

  6. It just means flashback.

  7. It's just a posh word for flashback.

  8. Flashback, it's common, isn't it?

  9. You see films or TV programs and it's a common theme.

  10. In the middle of one episode there's a flashback.

  11. And Isaiah 38 and 39 is a flashback.

  12. Last week, 36 and 37, we saw the Assyrian ruler, Sennacherib, standing on the doorstep of Jerusalem.

  13. And King Hezekiah prays to God and he's amazingly delivered.

  14. But when we turn to chapter 38, verse 1, this is how it begins.

  15. In those days, notice it's not specific, Hezekiah became sick and was at the point of death.

  16. And the vagueness of those days is such that we don't actually know exactly when Isaiah is writing about here.

  17. However, a few days later, a few verses later, without getting ahead of ourselves, we find that Hezekiah prays again.

  18. And Isaiah is told by God, go and tell Hezekiah.

  19. Hezekiah, the Lord, the God of your father David, has heard your prayer.

  20. He's seen your tears and He will give 15 more years of life to Hezekiah.

  21. I'll deliver you and the city from the hand of King Assyria.

  22. And I will defend the city.

  23. And as a result of God's mercy and Hezekiah's prayer, God promises, I will not only extend your life to Hezekiah,

  24. but I will also rescue Jerusalem from the King Assyria.

  25. And the rescue that you read about in chapter 39, 38, is what you read about also in chapter 36, 37.

  26. So here's a flashback.

  27. And I want us to come back right at the end of today's sermon and say, why?

  28. Why has Isaiah done it like this?

  29. Why has he not followed it chronologically?

  30. But before that, what I want us to see is an example from, really, 2 Corinthians,

  31. where the Apostle Paul talks about walking by faith and not by sight.

  32. Paul writes that Christians are those who walk by faith and not by sight.

  33. And I want us to look at this story and see what does faith look like.

  34. Because Hezekiah, in these two chapters, gives us an example of both things.

  35. We're going to look, first of all, at the King walking by faith,

  36. and then we will look at the King walking by sight.

  37. And then we'll think about why he presents it as a flashback.

  38. So first of all, the King walking by faith.

  39. Let's pick it up in verse 1.

  40. In those days, Hezekiah became sick and he was at the point of death.

  41. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Abor, came to him and said to him,

  42. Thus says the Lord, set your house in order, for you shall die, you shall not recover.

  43. It's not great bedside manner, is it?

  44. Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and he prayed to the Lord and he said,

  45. Please, O Lord, remember how I have walked before you in faithfulness with a whole heart

  46. and have done what is good in your sight.

  47. And Hezekiah went bitterly.

  48. It looks like, doesn't it, the grim reaper,

  49. well, his side is about to get Hezekiah before Sennacherib will.

  50. Because God tells the King, the King is probably in his mid-thirties at this point,

  51. that you're going to die.

  52. And you can tell from Hezekiah's response that he doesn't think it terribly well.

  53. He turns his face to the wall and he prays and he weeps uncontrollably.

  54. And in one sense we know, because this is a flashback, this is going to be a training ground, isn't it?

  55. For Hezekiah to turn to God in prayer.

  56. We know that he turned to God in prayer when the Assyrians were on the doorstep.

  57. In a little bit of time.

  58. But I think what we see in Hezekiah's life is a reminder that it can be harder to trust God

  59. and be strong in a personal crisis than in a public one.

  60. Or in Hezekiah's case a national one.

  61. Now look at his prayer.

  62. Unlike Hezekiah's prayer last week, which was such a great prayer,

  63. there's no praise, is there?

  64. It's a short prayer.

  65. There's no explicit submission to God's will.

  66. There's no explicit desire that God would be glorified.

  67. It's just a muted cry.

  68. A cry for help on the basis of having lived a life of covenant obedience.

  69. Hezekiah prays here.

  70. And he gets a response that he wasn't expecting.

  71. Look at verse 4.

  72. And the word of the Lord came to Isaiah.

  73. Go and say to Hezekiah,

  74. And thus says the Lord, the God of your father,

  75. the God of David, your father,

  76. I've heard your prayer.

  77. I've seen your tears.

  78. Behold, I will add 15 years to your life.

  79. I will deliver you with the city out of your hand of the king of Assyria,

  80. and I will defend the city.

  81. Now I want you to see that grace is seeping out of this paragraph everywhere.

  82. Hezekiah in the midst of despair and despondency.

  83. And God says to Hezekiah,

  84. I've heard your prayer.

  85. And not only that,

  86. He says to Hezekiah,

  87. I've not only heard your prayer,

  88. I've seen your tears.

  89. God knows every tear that you and I shed.

  90. In fact, we've already seen Isaiah 25.

  91. God says one day I'm going to wipe away every single tear.

  92. And God has heard Hezekiah's prayer.

  93. He's seen the tears,

  94. and he tells the king,

  95. I'm going to add 15 years to your life.

  96. But you see,

  97. God is not just a God that comes along and He gives us the minimum,

  98. and leaves it like that.

  99. No, God is not only a God who hears and sees,

  100. and a God who adds,

  101. but He's a God who promises to defend.

  102. And Hezekiah had not said anything in this prayer,

  103. about God's deliverance in Jerusalem.

  104. But God is a God who delights to give beyond what we ask for.

  105. Paul says in Ephesians chapter 3,

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  106. that God is able to do immeasurably,

  107. immeasurably more than we ask or imagine.

  108. Do you understand that?

  109. That the God we worship today,

  110. the God we have worshipped today,

  111. is able to do immeasurably more,

  112. not only than what you can ask,

  113. but what you can dream of.

  114. And so here in Hezekiah,

  115. walking by faith,

  116. it is not huge faith by any means,

  117. is it?

  118. But it is faith nonetheless.

  119. And God hears,

  120. and God defends,

  121. and then God confirms it with a sign.

  122. Look at verses 7 and 8.

  123. This shall be the sign to you from the Lord,

  124. that the Lord will do the same for what he's promised.

  125. Behold, I will make the shadow cast by the declining sun

  126. on the dial of Ahaz,

  127. turn back ten steps.

  128. So the sun turned back on the dial of ten steps,

  129. by which it declines.

  130. It's there, isn't it?

  131. It's an obvious sign.

  132. It's to assure Hezekiah that God can turn back time.

  133. And therefore he adds 15 years in his life.

  134. God makes a shadow go backwards on the stairway of Ahaz.

  135. How does he do that?

  136. Well, I don't know.

  137. What's the point with miracles?

  138. A miracle is persuasive as a sign from God,

  139. precisely because you cannot explain it.

  140. It can't be a human stunt, can it?

  141. It has to be from God.

  142. God, in this case,

  143. somehow temporarily bends the sunlight.

  144. It's not hard for him.

  145. I hope you are unashamed of miracles.

  146. God created the sun.

  147. He controls it.

  148. He can do whatever he wants from it.

  149. And he does so here.

  150. And with that, God therefore not only says to Hezekiah,

  151. but he shows to Hezekiah,

  152. let's see, I'm turning the clock back on your life.

  153. Hezekiah, I've heard your prayer.

  154. Now I think from this passage,

  155. there is one question that we should be asking

  156. before we move on,

  157. and I hope that it's in some of your minds.

  158. And it's the question of this.

  159. Has God changed his mind here?

  160. Was God actually planning to bring Hezekiah to death,

  161. and then Hezekiah prayed,

  162. and he says,

  163. oh, has he?

  164. Okay, you can have 15 more years.

  165. Is that what's going on?

  166. Is God being like the father

  167. whose son is wanting to play outside

  168. for another 10 minutes,

  169. but it's bedtime.

  170. And the son says,

  171. please, please, please, dad.

  172. And the dad says,

  173. oh, okay, go on.

  174. Is that what God is doing here?

  175. There is a smooth thought.

  176. There's a movement of theologians

  177. called open theists.

  178. And they would argue that God does change his mind.

  179. And they would say,

  180. at times God's intention is to go down

  181. that route,

  182. but then something happens,

  183. circumstances change,

  184. and he goes down another route.

  185. But God doesn't know the future.

  186. And so God has to wait for you and I

  187. to decide what we're going to do,

  188. and then he will react.

  189. And if necessary,

  190. God will change his plans.

  191. And that might feel attractive to you.

  192. It might feel that your relationship

  193. with God will be more dynamic.

  194. Because his actions

  195. and your plans will interact.

  196. But the main problem with that

  197. is the Bible expressly forbids it.

  198. Let me give you one clear objection.

  199. In 1 Samuel 15 verse 29,

    1 Samuel 15:29

  200. we read the glory of Israel.

  201. It's referring to God.

  202. And it says,

  203. the glory of Israel will not lie.

  204. God will not lie,

  205. and he will not change his mind,

  206. for he's not a man

  207. that he should change his mind.

  208. And I don't know why,

  209. that seems, doesn't it,

  210. pretty categorical.

  211. God does not change his mind.

  212. So the question is,

  213. if that's the case,

  214. well, what is going on in the Bible

  215. when it appears that God does change his mind?

  216. The Bible calls it often,

  217. God relents.

  218. You see that in the Old Testament particularly.

  219. And I want to suggest to you

  220. that the reason why this is presented to us

  221. is actually a lesson for you and I

  222. about the role of prayer.

  223. That while God is in complete control of history,

  224. and God has ordained from eternity past

  225. everything that is going to happen,

  226. much that is going to happen,

  227. comes to pass because of his people's prayers.

  228. By means of our prayer,

  229. to encourage our faith.

  230. You think about this.

  231. God did not have to tell Hezekiah,

  232. did he, about his impending death.

  233. He could have just done it.

  234. So why does God tell him?

  235. Well, in part, God tells him,

  236. I want you to set your things in order.

  237. But as you go through the Old Testament,

  238. you find that God occasionally tells people

  239. what he's intending to do,

  240. precisely as an invitation to pray.

  241. He does it with Abraham.

  242. Regarding Sodom in Genesis 18.

  243. He does it with Moses,

  244. right after the incidence of the golden calf

  245. in Exodus 32.

  246. He does it with the prophet Amos in Amos 7.

  247. And here God seems to be doing it with Hezekiah.

  248. God is inviting Hezekiah to pray.

  249. So as one person has put it,

  250. God's prayer is suggested by God,

  251. moves God,

  252. the ruler of all,

  253. God is the one who suggests prayer.

  254. He works through our prayers.

  255. But He is sovereign over everything in the end.

  256. So God here comes out,

  257. He condescends to our level,

  258. to allow us to be part of His attainable purposes.

  259. Through our prayers.

  260. Why?

  261. Because God wants to build our faith.

  262. He wants it to be a strengthener of our faith.

  263. Prayer matters to God

  264. as we seek to walk by faith

  265. as Hezekiah is here.

  266. Now that is unlikely, isn't it?

  267. It is unlikely that any of us would have expected

  268. at the end of the chapter

  269. that by the time we get to verses 5 and 6

  270. we would hear these gracious words from God.

  271. Coming out of the sad wrapping of verse 1.

  272. Hezekiah didn't expect it either.

  273. But in verses 9 to 20,

  274. Isaiah gives us the king's prayer,

  275. or the king's writing as it's called.

  276. About this experience of walking by faith.

  277. And the verses,

  278. I don't know if you picked them up as I read them,

  279. they read like a psalm in many ways.

  280. I think there are a number of parallels.

  281. I think Hezekiah plagiarized David

  282. at numerous times in this prayer.

  283. I don't have time to look at it in detail,

  284. but just look at a few things

  285. and what it means to walk by faith.

  286. First of all,

  287. walking by faith does not gloss over reality.

  288. Look at verse 12 to 14.

  289. Hezekiah acknowledges

  290. some very stark realities about life.

  291. Number one,

  292. he recognizes that life is fragile.

  293. He talks about life being like a shepherd's tent.

  294. He says,

  295. my life has got no more permanence than a tent.

  296. He talks about the decisiveness of death.

  297. He uses the picture of tapestry.

  298. That once the pole pattern has been woven,

  299. the thread is slipped.

  300. The tapestry is rolled off.

  301. And that is like our lives.

  302. And God is the one who brings that moment.

  303. But when the tapestry is rolled up,

  304. it is His decision.

  305. He talks about that stark reality.

  306. He talks about that in the midst of suffering,

  307. it sometimes feels that God is against us.

  308. It sometimes feels that God is hostile to us.

  309. So he describes here feeling that God is like a devouring lion.

  310. He also talks about the reality that our prayer feels feeble.

  311. Absolutely feeble.

  312. Hezekiah feels here that he's praying.

  313. He's doing absolutely nothing.

  314. Hezekiah is unafraid to deal with the stark reality of how he feels.

  315. And that's a good reminder, isn't it?

  316. That when we come to God in prayer,

  317. He expects us to come as we are.

  318. He wants us to come as a little child comes to their parents.

  319. Tells them what they're thinking and what they want.

  320. That's the picture that the Bible has of us coming to God in prayer.

  321. And so by walking by faith does not mean you cleaning up your prayers beforehand.

  322. Because you think that God only wants to hear the sanitized version of your prayers.

  323. God already knows the messy version of your life, doesn't He?

  324. He knows how much mess you and I are in,

  325. so we should tell Him.

  326. And Hezekiah gets that here.

  327. He points to the stark reality of how he feels,

  328. but then he moves on from that to his perception of God's mysterious ways in his life.

  329. Look at verses 15 and 17.

  330. He says, what can I say, God?

  331. You've spoken to me.

  332. You've done these things,

  333. and now I understand that the suffering that I went through,

  334. it had a purpose in my life.

  335. It's been an incredibly intense thing,

  336. but he recognizes it's been for his benefit.

  337. Actually, he uses the word shalom there.

  338. But this suffering is for my overall peace.

  339. It feels completely counterintuitive.

  340. But he says, now I understand that you are doing all these things

  341. because I've come to a new awareness of your love, Lord.

  342. Does that connect with you?

  343. That in the midst of your suffering,

  344. or even after your suffering,

  345. that you sense that you know God.

  346. And you sense,

  347. God, I know how much you love me

  348. because of what I went through.

  349. It's hard to see it in the midst of it, isn't it?

  350. But in hindsight,

  351. I think we can often look and see God's grace

  352. and his love are apparent in so many ways.

  353. Even in the valley of the shadow of death,

  354. I will not fear.

  355. Why? Because you are with me.

  356. But I think the most important insight

  357. that Hezekiah gets

  358. comes in verse 17.

  359. In verse 13,

  360. he feels God's hostility towards him.

  361. But in verse 17,

  362. he says,

  363. now I understand that I am a recipient of God's love.

  364. It was my welfare.

  365. And so,

  366. the question is,

  367. what brought the change?

  368. How do you move from being a recipient of God's wrath

  369. to being a recipient of God's love?

  370. And the answer to that question

  371. comes in the last line of verse 17.

  372. You see what it says?

  373. For you have cast all my sins

  374. behind your back.

  375. You've put all my sins behind your back.

  376. The only way for God

  377. to move from being a God of wrath towards us

  378. to being a God of love towards us

  379. is by having our sin dealt with.

  380. Hezekiah doesn't explain how that happens.

  381. But he knows that his sin

  382. no longer stands between him and God.

  383. Because God has taken that sin

  384. and He's thrown it behind His back.

  385. Lose your sin,

  386. plunge right in.

  387. He's thrown it behind His back.

  388. He's taken care of it.

  389. And so Hezekiah goes from the stark acknowledgement

  390. of how he felt

  391. to understanding the mysterious ways

  392. of God's grace.

  393. And then he says,

  394. I'm going to tell everyone about it.

  395. He wants to tell his offspring.

  396. He doesn't actually have a son at this point.

  397. But he knows that he's in the land of the living.

  398. But he's really alive now.

  399. And he needs to tell everyone

  400. how great God is.

  401. Here is a testimony

  402. of what it looks

  403. for a life

  404. to walk by faith.

  405. It's not clean, is it?

  406. It's certainly messy.

  407. But it acknowledges,

  408. yes, there is mess in my life,

  409. but God, you are at work.

  410. And what a difference a chapter makes.

  411. Because chapter 39 appears

  412. as if 38 might well never have happened.

  413. Because in chapter 39,

  414. Hezekiah begins to walk by sight.

  415. Look at the opening two verses

  416. of chapter 59.

  417. At the time,

  418. Meridot Baladan,

  419. the son of Baladan,

  420. king of Babylon,

  421. sent envoys with letters

  422. and a present to Hezekiah,

  423. for he assured

  424. that he had been sick and had recovered.

  425. Hezekiah welcomed them gladly.

  426. And he showed them his treasure house,

  427. the silver, the gold,

  428. the spices, the precious isle,

  429. his whole armoury,

  430. all that was found

  431. in his storehouses.

  432. There was nothing in his house

  433. and all his remnant

  434. that Hezekiah did not show them.

  435. Now, if you've been with us

  436. through the series of Isaiah,

  437. if you know the book at all,

  438. you will know

  439. that there are two superpowers

  440. in the world.

  441. There is Babylon

  442. and there is Assyria.

  443. And they were vying supremacy

  444. at this time.

  445. And when I told you

  446. that the king of Babylon

  447. now was Meridot Baladan.

  448. You think that that name is bad,

  449. his friends actually called him

  450. Marduk Aplah Adina II.

  451. We get the shorter version.

  452. But to the Assyrians,

  453. this man was a terrorist.

  454. In his own mind,

  455. Meridot Baladan was a freedom fighter.

  456. He was a freedom fighter,

  457. devoting his life

  458. to the freedom

  459. and the liberation of Babylon

  460. from the Assyrian army.

  461. And Meridot Baladan

  462. cheers through the grapevine

  463. that Hezekiah is becoming home.

  464. So being the caring and concerned

  465. king of years,

  466. he sends Hezekiah letters

  467. and a gift.

  468. We're not exactly told

  469. what the contents of the letters were,

  470. but we can see from Hezekiah's reaction

  471. that it wasn't kind of

  472. sorry to hear you've been here

  473. let's do lunch sometime

  474. when you're better.

  475. That wasn't the letter.

  476. In fact, the letter led

  477. Hezekiah

  478. to display

  479. all his resources.

  480. and all the arm strength

  481. of Judah

  482. to a ruler

  483. like Meridot Baladan.

  484. It probably means

  485. that the letter

  486. could only mean one thing.

  487. It means

  488. that the letter said

  489. will you join me

  490. in rebellion

  491. against Assyria?

  492. And Hezekiah

  493. falls for it.

  494. The choice

  495. could not have been more clear.

  496. Walk by faith

  497. in the Lord

  498. or walk by sight.

  499. Have the promises

  500. of God

  501. or the promises

  502. of man.

  503. And Hezekiah

  504. falls into a new sickness.

  505. But this sickness

  506. is spiritual amnesia.

  507. And he forgets

  508. God's promises.

  509. And it's not just

  510. forgetfulness

  511. it is huge pride.

  512. Look at Hezekiah's response

  513. to Isaiah's question

  514. in verse 3.

  515. Then Isaiah the prophet

  516. came to Hezekiah

  517. and said

  518. what did these men say?

  519. And from where

  520. did they come to you?

  521. And Hezekiah said

  522. they have come to me

  523. from a far country

  524. from Babylon.

  525. And he said

  526. what have they seen

  527. in your house?

  528. Hezekiah answered

  529. they have seen it all

  530. that's in my house.

  531. There's nothing

  532. in my store or houses

  533. that I could not show them.

  534. Isaiah asked

  535. three questions

  536. interestingly

  537. Hezekiah doesn't answer

  538. the first one

  539. about what the

  540. Babylonian delegation

  541. had said.

  542. But look at his answer

  543. to the question

  544. of where they come from.

  545. It's quite weak

  546. in our English translation.

  547. It basically says

  548. they came from

  549. the far country

  550. to see

  551. little old me.

  552. Little old me.

  553. There's two points

  554. of emphasis.

  555. They came

  556. from such

  557. a far country

  558. to see

  559. me.

  560. Imagine them

  561. coming all this way

  562. to see poor little me.

  563. Imagine

  564. Merodec

  565. Baladon

  566. the mighty

  567. king of Babylon

  568. wanting little

  569. old me

  570. as an ally.

  571. If he'd

  572. battered his eyelids

  573. at the end

  574. of verse 4

  575. it wouldn't have

  576. been out of place.

  577. It's totally pathetic.

  578. It's as if

  579. chapter 38

  580. does not take place.

  581. And he demonstrates

  582. in all of our lives

  583. what does it mean

  584. to go from

  585. faith in the

  586. real crisis

  587. to unbelief

  588. when you're back

  589. in the mundane

  590. and your ego

  591. gets struck.

  592. All of us

  593. we know

  594. don't we

  595. there's something

  596. really gratifying

  597. when someone

  598. important

  599. takes an interest

  600. in us.

  601. For all of us

  602. it's really

  603. heartwarming

  604. when you matter

  605. to important

  606. people.

  607. And he assures

  608. Hezekiah's downfall

  609. his forgetfulness

  610. of God's word

  611. and his pride.

  612. Alec Mateo

  613. puts it

  614. forgetfulness

  615. of the word

  616. of God

  617. is the prime

  618. enemy of faith.

  619. Pride in one's

  620. importance

  621. runs in a close

  622. second.

  623. Isaiah's response

  624. could not be more

  625. bleak

  626. could it in

  627. verses 5 to 7

  628. hear the word

  629. of the Lord

  630. of hosts

  631. behold the days

  632. are coming

  633. when all that

  634. is in your

  635. house

  636. all that your

  637. fathers have

  638. stored up

  639. to this day

  640. will be carried

  641. off to Babylon

  642. nothing will be

  643. left.

  644. Some of your

  645. own sons

  646. who come from

  647. you and whom

  648. you will

  649. father will be

  650. taken away

  651. and they shall

  652. be eunuchs

  653. in the place

  654. of the kings

  655. of Babylon.

  656. It couldn't be

  657. more clear

  658. defeat is coming

  659. captivity is coming

  660. exile is coming

  661. and notice

  662. Isaiah's impeccable

  663. logic here

  664. Hezekiah

  665. okay you want

  666. to commit all

  667. that you have

  668. to Hezekiah

  669. that all that

  670. you have

  671. well it will

  672. go to Babylon

  673. here's what

  674. Hezekiah

  675. happened when

  676. Hezekiah refused

  677. to walk by

  678. faith

  679. and instead

  680. he decided

  681. he could walk

  682. by sight

  683. let me finish

  684. let me conclude

  685. why the flashback

  686. why the flashback

  687. this all happened

  688. didn't it

  689. to Hezekiah

  690. before his

  691. finest hour

  692. when he trusted

  693. God

  694. to defeat

  695. Sennacherib

  696. and the Assyrians

  697. and so the question

  698. is why would

  699. why would

  700. Isaiah

  701. change the order

  702. wouldn't it have

  703. been better

  704. a better ending

  705. to finish the

  706. narrative section

  707. with Jerusalem

  708. saved

  709. and 185,000

  710. of those pesky

  711. Assyrians

  712. wiped out

  713. and Hezekiah

  714. trusting God

  715. wouldn't that

  716. have been

  717. the natural

  718. end

  719. well it might

  720. have been

  721. if it was

  722. even I

  723. but not

  724. for Isaiah

  725. because Isaiah

  726. places these

  727. two chapters

  728. next to chapter

  729. 40 for a reason

  730. chapter 40

  731. is a major

  732. new section

  733. of the book

  734. but when

  735. chapter 40

  736. begins

  737. can you guess

  738. where Judah

  739. is

  740. Judah is in

  741. exile

  742. in Babylon

  743. it's going to

  744. pick up the story

  745. sometimes after

  746. chapter 39

  747. but the point

  748. is clear

  749. God made a

  750. promise here

  751. and He will

  752. bring it to

  753. fulfilment

  754. but there's

  755. another reason

  756. why Isaiah

  757. inserts the

  758. flashback here

  759. and the reason

  760. why I think

  761. that he puts it

  762. here is because

  763. Hezekiah was

  764. one of the best

  765. he was one of

  766. the best

  767. let me read you

  768. what it says

  769. in 2 Kings

    2 Kings 18:5

  770. chapter 18

  771. verse 5

  772. it says

  773. Hezekiah trusted

  774. in the Lord

  775. the God of

  776. Israel

  777. so that there

  778. was none

  779. like him

  780. among all

  781. the kings

  782. of Judah

  783. after him

  784. nor among

  785. those who

  786. were before

  787. him

  788. Hezekiah

  789. was the

  790. great king

  791. and it was

  792. after his

  793. pride and

  794. his forgetfulness

  795. of God's

  796. word

  797. that that

  798. precipitated

  799. the exiles

  800. of Babylon

  801. Isaiah's point

  802. is this

  803. it's only a long

  804. while I've

  805. got there

  806. is that

  807. Hezekiah

  808. is not the

  809. king who

  810. is going to

  811. save Jerusalem

  812. don't put

  813. your trust

  814. in Hezekiah

  815. that even

  816. the best

  817. of kings

  818. is mortal

  819. and fallible

  820. I've needed

  821. an illustration

  822. all week

  823. of if we

  824. can't trust

  825. in dot dot

  826. dot

  827. who can we

  828. trust in

  829. the best

  830. illustration I

  831. can think of

  832. is Ryan

  833. Giggs

  834. Ryan Giggs

  835. is a Welsh

  836. footballer

  837. he's a hero

  838. to boys

  839. of my

  840. generation

  841. he only

  842. retired

  843. playing

  844. to me

  845. about 2

  846. years

  847. at the age

  848. of 38

  849. or 39

  850. he's a

  851. hero

  852. and he

  853. was so

  854. clean living

  855. he didn't

  856. go to all

  857. the parties

  858. he wasn't

  859. like Lee

  860. Sharp

  861. and the

  862. other

  863. man

  864. united

  865. players

  866. he wasn't

  867. allowed to

  868. do an

  869. interview

  870. for years

  871. he was

  872. everybody's

  873. hero

  874. mothers

  875. liked their

  876. boys to

  877. like Ryan

  878. Giggs

  879. older sisters

  880. thought that

  881. he was

  882. gorgeous

  883. boys wanted

  884. to be like

  885. him

  886. everybody

  887. loved Ryan

  888. Giggs

  889. he was a

  890. national

  891. hero

  892. and then it

  893. turned out

  894. didn't it

  895. about 4 years

  896. ago that he

  897. had been

  898. sleeping with

  899. his brother's

  900. wife

  901. and numerous

  902. others

  903. and the

  904. behind this

  905. incredible

  906. facade

  907. was actually

  908. a pretty

  909. immorally

  910. bankrupt

  911. man

  912. and so there

  913. was a blog

  914. post I remember

  915. reading it

  916. that said

  917. if we can't

  918. trust in

  919. Ryan Giggs

  920. who can we

  921. trust in

  922. Isaiah in

  923. chapter 39

  924. is leaving us

  925. with that same

  926. question

  927. he's saying

  928. if you can't

  929. trust in

  930. Hezekiah

  931. who can you

  932. trust in

  933. and Isaiah

  934. is going to

  935. help you

  936. answer that

  937. question

  938. in chapter

  939. 40

  940. but let me

  941. give you

  942. the answer

  943. now

  944. you look at

  945. the last

  946. temptation

  947. of the

  948. Lord Jesus

  949. when the

  950. devil came

  951. to him

  952. took him

  953. to a high

  954. mountain

  955. and he

  956. said

  957. he showed

  958. him all

  959. the kingdoms

  960. of the

  961. world

  962. and he

  963. said

  964. I'll give

  965. them to

  966. you

  967. if you

  968. bow down

  969. and worship

  970. me

  971. and Jesus

  972. said to him

  973. away from me

  974. Satan

  975. for it is

  976. written

  977. worship the

  978. Lord your

  979. God

  980. and save

  981. him only

  982. and Satan

  983. dives down

  984. to find

  985. if he can

  986. see any

  987. pride in

  988. Jesus

  989. that might

  990. make Jesus

  991. grasp for

  992. control of

  993. the kingdoms

  994. of the world

  995. and he says

  996. all this is

  997. for you

  998. Jesus

  999. if you

  1000. will only

  1001. bow down

  1002. to me

  1003. but there

  1004. was no

  1005. pride in

  1006. Jesus

  1007. and in

  1008. addition

  1009. Jesus

  1010. was not

  1011. quick to

  1012. forget

  1013. God's

  1014. word

  1015. was he

  1016. instead

  1017. he quotes

  1018. it back

  1019. at Satan

  1020. in this

  1021. case

  1022. Deuteronomy

  1023. 6.13

  1024. and he says

  1025. worship the

  1026. Lord your

  1027. God

  1028. and save

  1029. him only

  1030. Jesus

  1031. resists

  1032. temptation

  1033. because he

  1034. wasn't

  1035. proud

  1036. and he

  1037. didn't

  1038. forget

  1039. the word

  1040. of the

  1041. Lord

  1042. and he

  1043. understood

  1044. that he

  1045. was the

  1046. answer

  1047. to Isaiah's

  1048. implicit

  1049. question

  1050. that if you

  1051. can't trust

  1052. in Hezekiah

  1053. who can you

  1054. trust in

  1055. and the

  1056. answer is

  1057. only Jesus

  1058. and it's

  1059. the message

  1060. of the Old

  1061. New Testament

  1062. again and

  1063. again

  1064. and it's

  1065. the message

  1066. of the New

  1067. Testament

  1068. over and

  1069. again

  1070. because Jesus

  1071. is the

  1072. true king

  1073. and all

  1074. the kingdoms

  1075. that Satan

  1076. offered Jesus

  1077. were his

  1078. already

  1079. because he's

  1080. the true

  1081. king

  1082. but Jesus

  1083. understood

  1084. to secure

  1085. the crown

  1086. of being

  1087. king

  1088. meant first

  1089. he would

  1090. go to the

  1091. cross

  1092. why

  1093. because Jesus

  1094. is the

  1095. missing piece

  1096. of Isaiah

    Isaiah 38:17

  1097. 38 verse

  1098. 17

  1099. that we

  1100. refer to

  1101. by Hezekiah

  1102. that how

  1103. could Hezekiah

  1104. go from

  1105. being a

  1106. recipient of

  1107. God's

  1108. wrath

  1109. to be a

  1110. recipient of

  1111. God's

  1112. grace

  1113. why

  1114. because he

  1115. says God

  1116. has thrown

  1117. all my

  1118. sins behind

  1119. his back

  1120. but he

  1121. doesn't

  1122. explain how

  1123. he doesn't

  1124. explain why

  1125. and we're

  1126. not certain

  1127. he understood

  1128. why

  1129. and how

  1130. but we do

  1131. because the

  1132. answer is

  1133. Jesus

  1134. because the

  1135. king is also

  1136. what we saw

  1137. last week

  1138. the servant

  1139. and this

  1140. king is also

  1141. the saviour

  1142. and he had

  1143. to come and

  1144. go to the

  1145. cross

  1146. and there on

  1147. the cross

  1148. he bore the

  1149. wrath that

  1150. you and I

  1151. deserve

  1152. because you

  1153. and I have

  1154. spiritual amnesia

  1155. and over and

  1156. over and over

  1157. again you

  1158. and I

  1159. are proud

  1160. little people

  1161. over and over

  1162. again

  1163. and he bore

  1164. it all

  1165. so that you

  1166. and I would

  1167. not be

  1168. recipients of

  1169. God's wrath

  1170. but recipients

  1171. of his wrath

  1172. so that all

  1173. that God

  1174. would pour

  1175. into our

  1176. lives is

  1177. grace and

  1178. mercy

  1179. and the

  1180. problem is

  1181. without

  1182. Jesus

  1183. this morning

  1184. your sins

  1185. have not

  1186. been hurled

  1187. behind God's

  1188. back

  1189. you are still

  1190. under the

  1191. weight of

  1192. them

  1193. you carry

  1194. them everywhere

  1195. you go

  1196. and the penalty

  1197. for those sins

  1198. you will carry

  1199. into eternity

  1200. unless you can

  1201. find someone

  1202. to bear them

  1203. for you

  1204. and so who

  1205. are you going

  1206. to trust

  1207. who are you

  1208. going to trust

  1209. not the

  1210. Hezekiahs of

  1211. this world

  1212. not the

  1213. Brian Gibbs

  1214. of this

  1215. world

  1216. whoever else

  1217. you want

  1218. to put

  1219. into that

  1220. little

  1221. blank

  1222. but say

  1223. I am going

  1224. to trust

  1225. Jesus

  1226. because only

  1227. Jesus can

  1228. deliver me

  1229. from sin

  1230. only Jesus

  1231. can rescue

  1232. you and me

  1233. from exile

  1234. because He

  1235. is the

  1236. true king
