  1. This is my 14th year of doing carol services. On average that's about 4 to 5 carol services per Christmas.

  2. And there's always the question of what do you speak on at a Christmas carol service. What do you want from me?

  3. I could try and entertain you for 10 to 15 minutes. Maybe you've been in those carol services with jokes and poignant stories.

  4. You couldn't go down the sentimental route, can you? Where the preacher talks about babies and talks about wonderful acts of service that's been done this year.

  5. In 2016 we could talk about post-truth. It's the word of the year. The Oxford Dictionary's word of the year.

  6. Its definition is relating to circumstances or facts which are influential in shaping public opinion that appeal to emotion and personal belief.

  7. Post-truth, that term has gone up in use by 2,000% in 2016 because of the EU referendum and the presidential election, according to the dictionary.

  8. And you might think, as we read the Christmas story and as we sang it, that's a great example of post-truth.

  9. But I would want to argue otherwise.

  10. And what I want to do in the few brief minutes that I have is to resurrect a great Christian truth.

  11. I've never spoken on it in over 70 carol services in 14 years.

  12. I've never heard anyone speak about this great Christian truth in any carol service that I've been to.

  13. And you might think that it's an old-fashioned truth and it's a relic.

  14. And you might even think it's laughable.

  15. But the great truth that I want to speak to you about this evening in these few minutes, which I think has a great deal of light to shine on your life and my life tonight,

  16. is the truth that Jesus Christ is going to return to this earth.

  17. And I have one small phrase from the New Testament.

  18. Where Jesus Christ says, I will come again.

  19. I will come again.

  20. And it may surprise you that Jesus says that many, many times in the New Testament.

  21. Now, so much is the need of this great truth that there are loads of Christians that have exaggerated it.

  22. The result is that people are put off, aren't they, by Christian oddballs.

  23. And by Christians who exaggerate this.

  24. And by controversy.

  25. You might remember, I don't know whether you're still there, there used to be a man with a megaphone at Oxford Circus that used to tell you,

  26. as you were going down onto the tube on the central line, that the world was going to end.

  27. That it might end tomorrow.

  28. Sometimes you wish it did on the central line.

  29. But you know how it is, isn't it?

  30. When someone foolish Christian has tried to date the return of Jesus in glory.

  31. The end of the world that you can date it.

  32. Someone might come up to you or you see the poster that Christ is going to come again tomorrow.

  33. Now you know and I know perfectly well that that is very unlikely indeed.

  34. So you turn away from maybe your Christian friend by thinking, well he's as gullible as I thought all Christians were.

  35. And I have a surprise for you tonight.

  36. If you are new tonight, and if you're new to the Bible, when you turn to the pages of the New Testament,

  37. and you ask Jesus about his return in glory, he knew very well that there would be people like that.

  38. He talks about them in Mark's Gospel chapter 13.

  39. And he says that people will come up to you and they'll say, here he is or here he comes.

  40. And he's coming again, maybe tomorrow.

  41. And then Jesus says something very surprising.

  42. He says do not believe them.

  43. Do not believe them.

  44. Some people think that the Christian church is always telling us to believe things.

  45. But the Christian church is actually here also to tell you not to believe certain things.

  46. It tells you not to believe that you can achieve paradise on this earth.

  47. Not to believe the lie that you can create for yourself.

  48. The perfect family, the perfect world, the perfect Christmas.

  49. That can isolate you from pain.

  50. And the Bible tells you not to believe people when they say Jesus will come tomorrow.

  51. And yet the Christian church is commissioned to say,

  52. particularly during Advent and during Christmas season,

  53. that as certainly as Jesus came,

  54. in humility and generosity and meekness and helplessness as a baby,

  55. so that same Jesus will return in glory

  56. to judge the living and the dead.

  57. He has come.

  58. You read about it.

  59. You sang about it this evening.

  60. He left heaven.

  61. He was born of the Virgin Mary.

  62. He came to earth.

  63. He lived the life of God on earth.

  64. He performed miracles that backed up his claim.

  65. He was crucified, died and was buried.

  66. You can read about it.

  67. We've got gospels at the back.

  68. Eyewitnesses accounts of the life and death of the Lord Jesus.

  69. We'd love you to take one away and read it.

  70. He came.

  71. He came.

  72. He came.

  73. But the Bible tells us very clearly,

  74. he is coming again.

  75. And I think that saves us from despair.

  76. We look out, don't we,

  77. at limitless space and wonder what on earth is going to happen.

  78. That we don't have to despair over the situation of our world.

  79. You read the horrific reports of Aleppo this week.

  80. It's been horrific, hasn't it?

  81. And where will it end, we ask?

  82. Well, if we believe that Jesus Christ will return,

  83. we do believe that he has got his hand on the tiller.

  84. That he is in control.

  85. That he saves us.

  86. It saves us.

  87. The truth that he's coming again,

  88. saves us from despair.

  89. But it also saves you from despising Jesus Christ.

  90. Because if he is really going to return on the last day,

  91. it means a great deal.

  92. That he will have the last word.

  93. It means that no one can compare to him.

  94. It's amazing the amount of intelligent people you meet today

  95. who say, I do believe in God, or in a God.

  96. At least I think I do.

  97. But Jesus can't be the only way.

  98. Look at all the other religions of the world.

  99. But if Jesus Christ is going to return,

  100. it means that he is the only Lord.

  101. Everyone else may have something to say.

  102. Something to give us.

  103. Something to commend in their teaching to us.

  104. But Jesus is going to come as judge.

  105. What a dreadful thing it will be.

  106. If when we meet him face to face on that day.

  107. And his name has been on our lips only in blasphemy.

  108. What a dreadful thing.

  109. As he faces us on that last day.

  110. And we've never paid any attention to him

  111. while we have the opportunity.

  112. If he's going to come, it means he is the Lord.

  113. And it means that you and I

  114. are going to have to give an account

  115. of the way we've used the world.

  116. And used our own lives.

  117. Now I just want to ask and answer the question

  118. before I sit down this evening.

  119. How does Jesus Christ prepare us

  120. for that great day

  121. which is beyond my imagination

  122. and yours

  123. when he will return?

  124. And I think the Lord Jesus

  125. prepares us for his coming

  126. by coming to you today.

  127. Jesus, you see,

  128. if you look carefully at the New Testament,

  129. not only says, I have come

  130. and I will come again

  131. at the last day

  132. but he keeps saying

  133. in the Gospels

  134. and the Apostles say

  135. in their epistles

  136. he will come here and now.

  137. Let me try and explain to you what I mean.

  138. In John's Gospel

  139. written by the Apostle John

  140. Jesus explains to his disciples

  141. that one day

  142. he will come again

  143. to take them to the place

  144. where he's prepared for them.

  145. And he then says to them

  146. the Holy Spirit

  147. is going to come

  148. in the meantime

  149. and take my place

  150. with you.

  151. And when he comes

  152. John 14 verse 18

    John 14:18

  153. I will come to you.

  154. So he prepared them

  155. for that great day

  156. what the Christian church

  157. calls that Pentecost

  158. when the Holy Spirit

  159. came to the church

  160. and entered

  161. into the hearts

  162. of the believers.

  163. And when the Holy Spirit

  164. entered into the hearts

  165. of believers

  166. lo and behold

  167. they suddenly found

  168. that they knew

  169. Jesus Christ again.

  170. No longer did they have

  171. to depend on him

  172. being with them

  173. in a certain place

  174. and at a certain time

  175. in a certain space.

  176. He was with them

  177. wherever they went

  178. by his Holy Spirit.

  179. He's come again.

  180. And that great joy

  181. has been with the

  182. Christian church

  183. ever since.

  184. The gift of the Holy Spirit

  185. in your heart

  186. wherever you are.

  187. You cannot have

  188. anything more practical

  189. than that.

  190. I spoke to someone

  191. this week

  192. after another carol service

  193. and we got talking

  194. and I said to them

  195. do you believe

  196. in Jesus Christ?

  197. The man said

  198. he's such a wonderful example

  199. but it's just not practical.

  200. He had to go

  201. back to his office.

  202. But I was dying

  203. to speak to him

  204. about the gift

  205. of the Holy Spirit

  206. of God

  207. come down to earth

  208. by his Spirit

  209. into our lives

  210. to enable us

  211. by his power

  212. to follow Jesus.

  213. There's a verse

  214. which is very precious

  215. for many of us

  216. who are Christians

  217. and I want to leave you

  218. with this this evening.

  219. It's in the last

  220. book of the Bible

  221. where Jesus

  222. is writing

  223. to the church

  224. of his own day.

  225. And it's fascinating

  226. Jesus has got

  227. some pretty rude things

  228. to say to the church

  229. of his day

  230. and I'm sure

  231. he has got some

  232. pretty straight things

  233. to say to us

  234. as the church

  235. in our day.

  236. And at the end

  237. of the letter

  238. there's a strange

  239. twist to it.

  240. He finishes his letter

  241. by saying this

  242. and I want you

  243. to listen very carefully.

  244. He says

  245. look, behold

  246. I stand at the door

  247. and I knock.

  248. What's that?

  249. The Lord Jesus Christ

  250. outside the doors

  251. of the church

  252. unable to get in.

  253. And I'm afraid

  254. that's very much

  255. like the church

  256. in our country

  257. and the west.

  258. Behold

  259. I stand at the door

  260. and knock.

  261. And if any man

  262. if any woman

  263. if any boy

  264. if any girl

  265. hear my voice

  266. and open the door

  267. I will

  268. come.

  269. There's our phrase

  270. I will come to him

  271. and I will eat with him.

  272. Do you see

  273. Jesus Christ

  274. says to the church

  275. of his own day

  276. I'm outside

  277. but if there's

  278. anyone there

  279. who will open

  280. the door of their hearts

  281. I will come.

  282. I will come here

  283. and now.

  284. You tonight

  285. have not got to wait

  286. until tomorrow.

  287. You've not got to wait

  288. until ten years.

  289. You've not got to wait

  290. until your older children.

  291. You've not got to wait

  292. for that final day

  293. when all the accounts

  294. will be settled up

  295. on that day of reckoning.

  296. I will come to you today

  297. Jesus says.

  298. I know that

  299. for some of you

  300. this is the only opportunity

  301. I shall ever have

  302. to speak to you.

  303. But I want to commend

  304. Jesus Christ

  305. as someone who is able

  306. to come into your life

  307. today

  308. and change it.

  309. Transform it.

  310. For me it was in 1993

  311. I was 17 years old

  312. on a camp

  313. in North Wales.

  314. And so Christ

  315. opened the door

  316. of my heart

  317. and I'm thankful

  318. that he did.

  319. I didn't make much progress

  320. for many years

  321. but he did come

  322. into my heart

  323. and love.

  324. And I have met

  325. so many people

  326. ever since

  327. who've taken

  328. that great step.

  329. And they've responded

  330. to Christ's promise

  331. that he will come.

  332. And I have never

  333. met anyone

  334. who's asked

  335. Christ

  336. to come into

  337. their lives

  338. and then gone

  339. on to serve him

  340. and obey him

  341. who has regretted

  342. that step.

  343. It is the greatest

  344. step that you

  345. can ever take.

  346. I want you

  347. to read with me

  348. the third verse

  349. of our little town

  350. of Bethlehem.

  351. I don't know

  352. whether you can

  353. just flip back

  354. and just look

  355. at this verse

  356. with me.

  357. I'm not going

  358. to ask you

  359. to read it

  360. out loud.

  361. It's okay.

  362. But the third

  363. verse of our

  364. little town

  365. of Bethlehem

  366. as you change

  367. it.

  368. Preaches my

  369. sermon far

  370. better than

  371. I ever can.

  372. It says this.

  373. Can you see it?

  374. How silently

  375. how silently

  376. the wondrous

  377. gift is given.

  378. So God

  379. imparts

  380. to human hearts

  381. the blessing

  382. of his heaven.

  383. No ear

  384. may hear

  385. his coming

  386. but in this

  387. world of sin

  388. where meek

  389. souls will

  390. receive him

  391. still

  392. the dear

  393. Christ

  394. enters in.

  395. Yes

  396. to be Lord

  397. as you

  398. leave

  399. this evening

  400. as you walk

  401. out of those

  402. doors behind

  403. you.

  404. Why not say

  405. Lord Jesus

  406. Christ

  407. you've never

  408. been in my

  409. Christmas

  410. or in my

  411. life really.

  412. Come into my

  413. heart today.

  414. Pick up a

  415. gospel.

  416. Read an

  417. eyewitness

  418. account of the

  419. Lord Jesus

  420. Christ and be

  421. convinced by the

  422. evidence.

  423. Speak to a

  424. friend.

  425. Grab me.

  426. Let's meet up

  427. and talk about

  428. it.

  429. Jesus Christ

  430. because the

  431. Lord Jesus

  432. Christ has

  433. come in

  434. history

  435. and he

  436. will come

  437. in the

  438. future.

  439. But

  440. wonderfully he

  441. can come to

  442. you today.

  443. Let's bow our

  444. heads in prayer.

  445. Let's pray.
