  1. Isaiah 44 on page 604 and 5.

  2. We shop in Liddle.

  3. I popped in there yesterday afternoon.

  4. I was trying to get some raspberries.

  5. !

  6. You can go down the aisle.

  7. You can pick what you want.

  8. Liddle of an imitation for everything, don't they?

  9. Whether it's granola or Weetabix or crunching that cornflakes.

  10. There's all sorts of varieties.

  11. Something for everyone.

  12. And the Assyrians and the Babylonians in Isaiah's day,

  13. they didn't have supermarkets.

  14. But if they did have the equivalent of Liddle,

  15. they would be jam-packed, not with breakfast seagulls,

  16. but with gods.

  17. And with deities.

  18. That would be available for your worship.

  19. You get a different god depending on your circumstance,

  20. depending on your need,

  21. depending on your mood.

  22. You could choose from all sorts of numerous gods.

  23. And that would bring you what you're looking for.

  24. And that aisle in the Babylonian and Assyrian supermarket

  25. would have been crammed full of people all the time.

  26. It would have been on the left as you went in,

  27. the kind of prime spot.

  28. Because everyone in Isaiah's day was looking for a god.

  29. Or gods.

  30. And here was the big challenge for the prophet of the Lord Isaiah.

  31. Because as he is right,

  32. whom God had redeemed,

  33. whom God had taken as his whole people,

  34. from all the peoples of the earth,

  35. as God's people looked at the Assyrians and the Babylonians,

  36. as they looked at those people who come in and conquered them,

  37. they looked at those people and they got the impression

  38. that maybe there was something about this idolatry gig after all.

  39. Maybe it wasn't that bad.

  40. I mean,

  41. look at the Assyrians.

  42. And look at the Babylonians.

  43. They're rich.

  44. They're sophisticated.

  45. They live in nice houses.

  46. That's got to have something to do with the power of their god, hasn't it?

  47. So it just seemed absurd to the conquered Israelites.

  48. Those who'd been defeated by these people,

  49. who'd been dragged off into exile,

  50. to maintain that their god was supreme over all the other gods.

  51. And these gods of the conquerors,

  52. your gods are nothing.

  53. When they compared their lifestyle

  54. to the lifestyle of those other people,

  55. it seems point away from the supremacy of the Lord God of Israel.

  56. Well, if you were with us last term,

  57. you will know that Isaiah has got something that's near

  58. for being his body on the theme of idolatry.

  59. It keeps coming back again and again.

  60. And in chapter 40 to 48,

  61. that is his main concern.

  62. And what he keeps reminding the Israelites

  63. is not very complicated at all.

  64. The message is pretty straightforward.

  65. It's a bit like when President Calvin Coolidge

  66. came home from church one day.

  67. And the story goes that his wife asked him,

  68. what was the sin about?

  69. And Coolidge grumpily said he spoke about sin.

  70. His wife asked him,

  71. what did he say about sin?

  72. And Coolidge replied,

  73. he said he was against it.

  74. And that is pretty much the message of Isaiah here.

  75. That God and idolatry,

  76. God is against it.

  77. Now we can all go home at this point and finish,

  78. but there's lots more to dig into.

  79. You and I need to understand

  80. why God is so opposed to idolatry.

  81. And the reason why that is so important for you today

  82. in the 21st century

  83. is you and I find ourselves

  84. constantly facing the same kind of temptation

  85. as the Israelites.

  86. And that temptation goes far beyond

  87. the wooden statues that we read about

  88. in today's passage.

  89. Here's how Tim Callow to find an idol.

  90. He's got an excellent little book

  91. called Counterfeit Gods.

  92. And in that book he says,

  93. An idol is anything more important to you than God.

  94. Anything that absorbs your heart and imagination

  95. more than God.

  96. Anything you seek to give you

  97. what only God can give you.

  98. And so when we understand that,

  99. you and I face exactly the same temptations

  100. as the Israelites said.

  101. As we look around ourselves,

  102. we see people with money

  103. and with success.

  104. And we see people who are living

  105. in the lack of luxury.

  106. And we see people who have got what we want.

  107. They're successful.

  108. Or they're popular.

  109. They get great job satisfaction.

  110. And as far as we can tell,

  111. they've got that

  112. because they've devoted themselves

  113. to the acquisition of money,

  114. the pursuit of success,

  115. the pursuit of power,

  116. the pursuit of great reputation.

  117. And it tempts us to say,

  118. maybe there is something

  119. in this ideology gig after all.

  120. Maybe it isn't all that bad

  121. to go after those gods.

  122. And here am I trying to tell people

  123. how great God is

  124. and that money set on power

  125. are not what they're cracked up to be,

  126. but the people,

  127. they go after those things.

  128. And the people who go after those things

  129. don't seem to be doing too badly at all,

  130. do they?

  131. So children,

  132. your mates in school,

  133. your friends in school,

  134. who actually,

  135. they don't care about God,

  136. they don't love the Lord Jesus,

  137. and they seem to be,

  138. well, pretty happy.

  139. They seem to be doing okay.

  140. They don't follow God's law.

  141. Why not just be like them?

  142. And Isaiah wants to expose to you

  143. the absolute absurdity,

  144. the craziness of thinking that way.

  145. And he wants us to see how mad,

  146. how mad it is to mess with lifeless idols

  147. when you can know the living God.

  148. So we're going to look at that.

  149. And see in three points,

  150. the reality of the living God,

  151. the absurdity of idolatry,

  152. and then thirdly,

  153. the redemptive reasons to worship God

  154. and not idols.

  155. And all because it is mad

  156. to worship

  157. and to mess

  158. with lifeless idols

  159. when you can know the living God.

  160. So first of all,

  161. from verses 6 onwards,

  162. the reality of the living God.

  163. Let me go to 6 of Isaiah 44.

  164. Thus says the Lord,

  165. the King of Israel,

  166. and His Redeemer,

  167. the Lord of hosts,

  168. I am the first

  169. and I am the last.

  170. And besides me,

  171. there is no God.

  172. Who is like me?

  173. Let Him proclaim it.

  174. Let Him declare

  175. and set it before me.

  176. Since I appointed an ancient people,

  177. let them declare what is to come

  178. and what will happen.

  179. Fear not.

  180. Nor be afraid.

  181. Have I not told you from of old

  182. and declared it?

  183. And you are my witnesses.

  184. Is there a God besides me?

  185. There is no rock.

  186. I know not any.

  187. Because there's numerous places

  188. during this book.

  189. Isaiah helps us to see

  190. how God lays out His CV

  191. as a reminder

  192. that there is absolutely

  193. no one like Him.

  194. That the Lord God

  195. is in a category

  196. all of His own.

  197. And so He points us,

  198. first of all,

  199. to His very nature.

  200. He says,

  201. He is the King of Israel.

  202. He is their Redeemer.

  203. But not only that,

  204. He is the Lord of hosts.

  205. Literally,

  206. He is the Lord Almighty.

  207. All the powers

  208. and the armies

  209. of heaven

  210. are at His command.

  211. He says,

  212. doesn't He,

  213. He is the first

  214. and He is the last.

  215. He is the first.

  216. That means He doesn't

  217. derive His life

  218. from elsewhere.

  219. In contrast,

  220. to what you're about

  221. to see later on

  222. in the chapter.

  223. God is self-sufficient.

  224. He is self-sufficient

  225. and He is the last.

  226. He will outlast

  227. all things.

  228. And He will remain

  229. supreme forever.

  230. And it's not just

  231. in His nature

  232. that He says

  233. He is unique.

  234. It is in the way

  235. that He sovereignly

  236. rules over all of history.

  237. God is alone

  238. is the one

  239. who has orchestrated

  240. everything

  241. in history.

  242. Up to this point,

  243. and He will orchestrate

  244. everything

  245. in the future.

  246. It's not that

  247. just in what happens,

  248. but in what it means.

  249. God interprets

  250. history for us.

  251. And then Isaiah

  252. comes back

  253. to the challenge

  254. of the idols

  255. that we saw

  256. in chapter 41.

  257. It's a challenge

  258. by which you can

  259. show whether

  260. your God

  261. is the real God.

  262. Can your God

  263. predict the future?

  264. Because the God

  265. of the Bible

  266. gets 100%

  267. success rate

  268. every time.

  269. He's never

  270. got it wrong.

  271. And God says

  272. to the idols,

  273. can you do that?

  274. Can you predict

  275. the coming

  276. of the Babylonian

  277. domination,

  278. which God

  279. spoke to Isaiah

  280. in chapter 39?

  281. Can you predict

  282. who the world

  283. conqueror will be

  284. and bring down

  285. Babylon?

  286. Can you tell

  287. what the ruler

  288. of that nation,

  289. who will come

  290. almost 200 years

  291. from now,

  292. what his name

  293. will be?

  294. Because Isaiah

  295. gives his name

  296. at the end

  297. of the chapter.

  298. Here is the reality

  299. of the living God

  300. when you start

  301. to take it in.

  302. You start to realise

  303. what an amazing

  304. difference this

  305. should make

  306. in your life,

  307. that we follow

  308. and we trust

  309. this God.

  310. Because if you

  311. know the God

  312. of the Bible,

  313. you know

  314. the God

  315. who holds

  316. the future

  317. in his hands.

  318. And the God

  319. who tells you

  320. what that future

  321. will be like

  322. in prophecy.

  323. So don't you

  324. think that it

  325. makes sense

  326. that you can

  327. rest in him

  328. at the start

  329. of this year?

  330. And you can

  331. walk into

  332. that future,

  333. you don't know

  334. what the future

  335. is for you.

  336. None of us do.

  337. But God does.

  338. So God says

  339. to you at the start

  340. of verse 8,

  341. do not tremble.

  342. Fear not.

  343. Don't be afraid,

  344. trust me.

  345. And if you

  346. walk into the future

  347. holding my hand,

  348. you have nothing

  349. to worry about

  350. because I know

  351. what is there.

  352. I'll be your

  353. rock,

  354. that's it.

  355. Don't look for a

  356. rock elsewhere

  357. because there is

  358. no other.

  359. There is no other.

  360. I'm the only one.

  361. Do you see what

  362. God is doing

  363. before he gets

  364. to the absurdity

  365. of the idols?

  366. He's saying,

  367. if you have a

  368. God like me,

  369. why would you

  370. ever consider

  371. messing with idols?

  372. Paul Newman

  373. was a very

  374. famous actor

  375. and he was

  376. quite well known

  377. for his devotion

  378. to his wife

  379. Joanne Woodward.

  380. And Paul Newman

  381. was once asked

  382. when he worked

  383. with so many

  384. beautiful women

  385. in the Hollywood

  386. industry,

  387. why or how

  388. he stayed faithful

  389. to his wife.

  390. And Newman

  391. famously quipped,

  392. why go out

  393. for a hamburger

  394. when you have

  395. stayed at home?

  396. Now,

  397. I'm not sure

  398. that his wife

  399. appreciated

  400. what he was

  401. saying.

  402. I'm sure she

  403. appreciated the

  404. sentiment behind it.

  405. But that's the

  406. kind of argument

  407. you've got

  408. as I've already

  409. thought.

  410. Why mess

  411. with idols

  412. when you've

  413. got the true

  414. and the living

  415. God?

  416. when you've

  417. got the fountain

  418. of the living

  419. waters?

  420. When you've

  421. got the first

  422. and the last

  423. of the living

  424. God?

  425. Here is the

  426. reality of the

  427. one true

  428. God.

  429. Well,

  430. at this point

  431. Isaiah says to

  432. us,

  433. we've just

  434. heard from the

  435. sovereign living

  436. God.

  437. Stay tuned

  438. because after

  439. the break

  440. I'll be taking

  441. us on a field

  442. trip to God's

  443. shop.

  444. And you won't

  445. want to miss

  446. this one.

  447. And sure enough

  448. after the commercial

  449. we see Isaiah

  450. in the idol

  451. shop.

  452. And it's

  453. a haven of

  454. activity and

  455. busyness.

  456. So the

  457. verses 12

  458. and 13

  459. the futility

  460. of idols.

  461. The

  462. eidensmith

  463. takes a

  464. cutting tool

  465. and he

  466. works it

  467. over the

  468. coals and

  469. he fashions

  470. it with

  471. hammers and

  472. he works

  473. it with

  474. his strong

  475. arm.

  476. He becomes

  477. hungry.

  478. His strength

  479. fails.

  480. He drinks

  481. no water

  482. and he gets

  483. faint.

  484. And the

  485. carpenter

  486. scratches a line.

  487. He marks

  488. it out

  489. with a

  490. pencil.

  491. He shapes

  492. it with

  493. planes.

  494. He marks

  495. it with

  496. a compass.

  497. He shapes

  498. it into

  499. the figure

  500. of a man

  501. with the

  502. beauty of

  503. a man to

  504. dwell in

  505. a house.

  506. Isaiah

  507. wants you

  508. to see how

  509. much work

  510. goes into

  511. idolatry.

  512. You've got

  513. an island over

  514. there.

  515. You've got

  516. a carpenter

  517. over here.

  518. And there

  519. are various

  520. kinds of

  521. wood.

  522. And it

  523. all involves

  524. a lot of

  525. skill to

  526. make what

  527. are obviously

  528. works of

  529. art.

  530. It's saying

  531. this isn't

  532. haphazard.

  533. This isn't

  534. random.

  535. This is

  536. something that

  537. people take

  538. very, very

  539. seriously.

  540. And the

  541. reason they

  542. take it

  543. seriously is

  544. because they're

  545. very religious

  546. people.

  547. How do I

  548. know they

  549. are religious

  550. people?

  551. Because

  552. everyone,

  553. everyone is a

  554. religious person.

  555. Everyone

  556. worships

  557. something.

  558. And if you

  559. don't worship

  560. the one true

  561. God,

  562. you won't

  563. worship nothing.

  564. You'll worship

  565. something else.

  566. in search for

  567. meaning and

  568. significance.

  569. About a

  570. year ago,

  571. a couple of

  572. years ago,

  573. there was a

  574. big fuss,

  575. wasn't there,

  576. in the media

  577. about the

  578. Sunday

  579. Assembly.

  580. Do you

  581. remember it?

  582. It's the

  583. Atheist

  584. Church.

  585. And in the

  586. article,

  587. the Atheist

  588. Church in

  589. London met

  590. in a

  591. disused

  592. church

  593. building.

  594. And if you

  595. look at the

  596. picture,

  597. it looks very

  598. much like a

  599. regular church

  600. service.

  601. It's got the

  602. architecture of

  603. the church

  604. building.

  605. It's got a

  606. PowerPoint.

  607. PowerPoint.

  608. You've even

  609. got the

  610. casually dressed

  611. preacher with

  612. no tie.

  613. Instead of

  614. Charles Wesley,

  615. the article

  616. said they

  617. signed

  618. Stevie Wonder.

  619. And instead

  620. of Isaiah,

  621. they read out

  622. Alice's

  623. Wonderland.

  624. They lectured

  625. instead of

  626. sermons.

  627. Instead of

  628. the reading of

  629. the law,

  630. the Ten

  631. Commandments,

  632. the Sunday

  633. gathering has

  634. ten ethical

  635. guidelines.

  636. Now,

  637. doesn't that

  638. strike you

  639. as terribly

  640. ironic?

  641. That there

  642. is an effort

  643. to offer

  644. something that

  645. rejects religion,

  646. the Sunday

  647. Assembly,

  648. but all it

  649. could do

  650. was imitate

  651. religion.

  652. All it

  653. could do

  654. is provide

  655. more religion.

  656. Because every

  657. single person

  658. in this world

  659. is a deeply

  660. religious person.

  661. And they

  662. obviously take

  663. a lot of

  664. care about

  665. this,

  666. a lot of

  667. thought and

  668. preparation

  669. has gone

  670. into it,

  671. just like

  672. in Isaiah's

  673. shop.

  674. Because we

  675. are all

  676. religious people.

  677. And Isaiah

  678. wants us to

  679. see in the

  680. middle of

  681. this God

  682. shop the

  683. absolute

  684. absurdity of

  685. what is

  686. going on

  687. here.

  688. He says

  689. these men

  690. they come

  691. together and

  692. they work

  693. together to

  694. make this

  695. idol.

  696. They're

  697. its creators.

  698. They've

  699. made it and

  700. now they are

  701. worshipping what

  702. they've made.

  703. And it

  704. seems a little

  705. strange.

  706. What does

  707. the idol

  708. resemble?

  709. What does

  710. the idol

  711. resemble?

  712. Surprise,

  713. surprise,

  714. the end of

  715. verse 13,

  716. it resembles

  717. them.

  718. Looks like

  719. them.

  720. And what's it

  721. made of?

  722. It's made of

  723. wood,

  724. wood from a

  725. tree in a

  726. forest that's

  727. dependent on

  728. the rain you

  729. know.

  730. You do know

  731. don't you,

  732. you can't have

  733. a God unless

  734. the weather is

  735. quite right.

  736. And so then

  737. Isaiah asks

  738. one of the

  739. carpenters to

  740. explain,

  741. you worship

  742. an idol.

  743. You worship

  744. an idol of

  745. wood and the

  746. carpenter

  747. replies,

  748. well,

  749. yes,

  750. it's more

  751. leftover wood.

  752. And because

  753. we've got a

  754. fire and the

  755. fire is there

  756. to keep us

  757. warm and we

  758. need the fire

  759. to cook our

  760. food over the

  761. fire,

  762. but we had

  763. some wood

  764. left over

  765. after we

  766. built the

  767. fire so we

  768. made it into

  769. a God that

  770. we worship.

  771. And we bow

  772. down to it and

  773. we pray to it

  774. and we ask it

  775. to save us and

  776. they say it all

  777. with a straight

  778. face.

  779. Firewood,

  780. bakewood,

  781. wood and

  782. Godwood.

  783. All from the

  784. same log.

  785. What a great

  786. deal.

  787. Buy your

  788. wood here.

  789. Two for the

  790. price of one.

  791. Got firewood,

  792. bakewood and

  793. Godwood,

  794. all from the

  795. same log.

  796. You couldn't

  797. make it up.

  798. Archimuthier

  799. spouss out the

  800. absurdity about

  801. this.

  802. He says,

  803. the idol's

  804. ancestry is

  805. earthly.

  806. Its cultivation,

  807. human.

  808. Its life derived

  809. from the

  810. creation and

  811. its deity is

  812. the chance which

  813. allowed it to

  814. survive the

  815. needs of the

  816. kitchen fire.

  817. The idol's

  818. logic suggests

  819. that what has

  820. been given to

  821. him, the

  822. physical benefit

  823. of cooked

  824. food and the

  825. comfort of

  826. bodily warmth

  827. can also

  828. nourish his

  829. soul.

  830. But it's how

  831. Isaiah brings

  832. an end to

  833. this section of

  834. this little

  835. field trip

  836. that I think

  837. is so instructive.

  838. Can you look

  839. at verse 9?

  840. And then

  841. verse 18.

  842. Old-fashioned

  843. idols are

  844. nothing, and

  845. the things they

  846. delight in do

  847. not profit.

  848. Their witnesses

  849. neither see nor

  850. know that they

  851. may be put to

  852. shame.

  853. And then

  854. verse 18.

  855. They know

  856. not, nor do

  857. they discern, for

  858. he has shut

  859. their eyes so

  860. that they cannot

  861. see, and their

  862. hearts so that

  863. they cannot

  864. understand.

  865. There's some

  866. debate about

  867. verse 9, whether

  868. the witnesses are

  869. the idols

  870. themselves or

  871. the idol makers.

  872. I think it is

  873. the idol makers.

  874. But Isaiah is

  875. making a

  876. connection, which

  877. I really want

  878. you to make

  879. this morning,

  880. between the

  881. idols and

  882. the idol makers.

  883. And he

  884. says, just as

  885. the idols are

  886. blind and

  887. ignorant, so

  888. are the

  889. idolaters who

  890. have made

  891. their idols.

  892. The

  893. idolaters, can

  894. you get it, have

  895. become like the

  896. idols.

  897. And we've

  898. already seen that

  899. in the prophet

  900. Isaiah.

  901. But let me

  902. take you to

  903. another passage

  904. in Psalms, which

  905. says the same

  906. thing.

  907. Psalm 115

  908. says, why do

  909. the Neesians

  910. say, where is

  911. their God?

  912. Our God is in

  913. heaven.

  914. He does whatever

  915. it pleases him,

  916. but their idols

  917. are silver and

  918. gold made by

  919. the hands of

  920. men.

  921. They have

  922. mouths, but

  923. they cannot

  924. speak.

  925. They have

  926. eyes, but

  927. they cannot

  928. see.

  929. They have

  930. ears, but

  931. they cannot

  932. hear.

  933. They have

  934. noses, but

  935. they cannot

  936. smell.

  937. They have

  938. hands, but

  939. they cannot

  940. feel.

  941. They have

  942. feet, but

  943. they cannot

  944. walk.

  945. Nor can

  946. they suffer

  947. after a

  948. sound of

  949. their

  950. throats.

  951. Then what

  952. does he

  953. say?

  954. He says,

  955. those who

  956. make them

  957. will be

  958. like them.

  959. And so

  960. will all

  961. who trust

  962. in him.

  963. And that

  964. is what

  965. Isaiah is

  966. really wanting

  967. to say to

  968. you and I

  969. this morning.

  970. Those who

  971. make idols

  972. will be

  973. like the

  974. idols.

  975. And so

  976. will all

  977. them put

  978. their trust

  979. in idols.

  980. You get

  981. like the

  982. people you

  983. live with.

  984. You get

  985. like the

  986. people you

  987. worship.

  988. Greg

  989. Beal says,

  990. we resemble

  991. what we

  992. revere,

  993. either for

  994. ruin or

  995. restoration.

  996. I try to

  997. think about

  998. this.

  999. The last

  1000. few months

  1001. as we've

  1002. been going

  1003. through these

  1004. passages,

  1005. how do

  1006. we become

  1007. like the

  1008. idols that

  1009. we worship?

  1010. what does

  1011. it mean?

  1012. It can't

  1013. mean, can

  1014. it, that

  1015. if you

  1016. make money,

  1017. you're

  1018. idols, that

  1019. somehow you

  1020. become like

  1021. money.

  1022. That isn't

  1023. it.

  1024. That you

  1025. take on

  1026. some

  1027. characteristics,

  1028. or if you

  1029. make your

  1030. career the

  1031. central thing,

  1032. which you

  1033. derive all

  1034. your significance

  1035. that you

  1036. become like

  1037. your career.

  1038. I don't

  1039. think that's

  1040. the right

  1041. train of

  1042. thought.

  1043. And it

  1044. makes me

  1045. think that

  1046. Isaiah has

  1047. got something

  1048. that is more

  1049. general in

  1050. mind.

  1051. At its

  1052. most basic

  1053. level, he's

  1054. telling you

  1055. and I that

  1056. if we choose

  1057. to devote

  1058. ourselves to

  1059. anything other

  1060. than God,

  1061. something that

  1062. is lifeless,

  1063. it will render

  1064. us spiritually

  1065. dense.

  1066. Spiritually

  1067. blind and

  1068. just like the

  1069. idol, which

  1070. in the end

  1071. will bring us

  1072. to ruin.

  1073. I've been

  1074. milling back

  1075. and forth

  1076. with a

  1077. friend on

  1078. this.

  1079. And I do

  1080. think that

  1081. Jesus gives

  1082. us a

  1083. wonderful

  1084. illustration of

  1085. this.

  1086. He gives

  1087. us an

  1088. illustration of

  1089. what Isaiah

  1090. 44 is

  1091. talking about.

  1092. About how

  1093. we can

  1094. resemble what

  1095. we revere

  1096. and worship,

  1097. either for

  1098. ruin or for

  1099. restoration.

  1100. And the

  1101. illustration comes

  1102. in the

  1103. parable of

  1104. the rich man

  1105. and Lazarus

  1106. in Luke 16.

  1107. So can you

  1108. put a paw in

  1109. Isaiah 44,

  1110. a finger in

  1111. Isaiah 44,

  1112. and turn

  1113. over to

  1114. Luke 16,

  1115. which is on

  1116. page 875.

  1117. And in

  1118. the most

  1119. famous,

  1120. this famous

  1121. parable,

  1122. Luke tells

  1123. us, in

  1124. Luke 16,

    Luke 16:14–15

  1125. verses 14

  1126. to 15,

  1127. which is on

  1128. page 875,

  1129. the Pharisees

  1130. were lovers

  1131. of money.

  1132. And they

  1133. heard all

  1134. these things

  1135. and they

  1136. ridiculed him.

  1137. They were

  1138. lovers of

  1139. money,

  1140. money is

  1141. an idol

  1142. for them.

  1143. And they

  1144. ridiculed

  1145. him.

  1146. And he

  1147. said to

  1148. them,

  1149. you are

  1150. those who

  1151. justify

  1152. yourselves

  1153. before men,

  1154. but God

  1155. knows your

  1156. heart,

  1157. for what

  1158. is exalted

  1159. amongst men

  1160. is an

  1161. abomination.

  1162. And it's

  1163. God,

  1164. in God's

  1165. sight.

  1166. So here

  1167. are religious

  1168. church-grown

  1169. people,

  1170. and they

  1171. are steeped

  1172. in idols.

  1173. They are

  1174. steeped in idols

  1175. to which they're

  1176. oblivious.

  1177. Here are

  1178. people who are

  1179. consumed by

  1180. money,

  1181. with wealth,

  1182. and with

  1183. accumulation.

  1184. They found

  1185. their identity

  1186. in their bank

  1187. balances,

  1188. houses,

  1189. and the

  1190. size of

  1191. their homes,

  1192. and what

  1193. job they

  1194. had,

  1195. and what

  1196. phone they

  1197. had.

  1198. And so

  1199. Jesus tells

  1200. them a

  1201. parable,

  1202. and the

  1203. parable

  1204. involves

  1205. two

  1206. people,

  1207. a rich

  1208. man and

  1209. Lazarus.

  1210. And Jesus

  1211. introduces his

  1212. characters to

  1213. the listeners

  1214. like this,

  1215. look at

  1216. verse 19.

  1217. There's a

  1218. rich man

  1219. who's clothed

  1220. in purple and

  1221. fine linen,

  1222. and who

  1223. feasted

  1224. sumptuously

  1225. every day.

  1226. And on his

  1227. gate was

  1228. laid out a

  1229. poor man

  1230. named Lazarus

  1231. covered with

  1232. swords.

  1233. Jesus sets

  1234. up a

  1235. really simple

  1236. story of

  1237. compare and

  1238. contrast

  1239. between the

  1240. rich man

  1241. and Lazarus.

  1242. And the

  1243. contrast is

  1244. between what

  1245. they wear.

  1246. The rich

  1247. man is

  1248. clothed in

  1249. purple,

  1250. and Lazarus,

  1251. well, he

  1252. is barely

  1253. covered,

  1254. really.

  1255. There's a

  1256. contrast in

  1257. their diet.

  1258. The rich

  1259. man had

  1260. really great

  1261. food.

  1262. The

  1263. Lazarus long

  1264. scraps

  1265. are falling

  1266. on the

  1267. table.

  1268. But they're

  1269. not the

  1270. big differences.

  1271. What is the

  1272. big difference

  1273. in the story

  1274. of the rich

  1275. man and

  1276. Lazarus?

  1277. What is the

  1278. main contrast?

  1279. It's very,

  1280. very easy to

  1281. miss it.

  1282. The big

  1283. contrast is

  1284. one of the

  1285. men has

  1286. got a name

  1287. and one

  1288. of them

  1289. hasn't.

  1290. This is the

  1291. only parable

  1292. in the

  1293. Gospels

  1294. where Jesus

  1295. gives someone

  1296. a name.

  1297. But here's

  1298. the thing.

  1299. You would

  1300. think if Jesus

  1301. was going to

  1302. give one

  1303. character a name,

  1304. he would

  1305. give both

  1306. characters a name,

  1307. wouldn't you?

  1308. wouldn't he?

  1309. But he

  1310. doesn't do

  1311. that, and

  1312. he doesn't

  1313. do that

  1314. deliberately.

  1315. And he

  1316. gives Lazarus

  1317. a name, but

  1318. the rich

  1319. man has

  1320. none.

  1321. And I

  1322. think in

  1323. that, we

  1324. have the

  1325. greatest

  1326. illustration of

  1327. Isaiah 44.

  1328. The consequence

  1329. of running

  1330. after idols.

  1331. Why does

  1332. Jesus not

  1333. give the

  1334. rich man a

  1335. name?

  1336. The rich

  1337. man, I

  1338. think, does

  1339. not get a

  1340. name because

  1341. a rich man

  1342. is all that

  1343. he is.

  1344. He's just

  1345. a rich man.

  1346. And he's

  1347. nothing.

  1348. Or he's

  1349. nothing.

  1350. Him being

  1351. a rich man

  1352. with all

  1353. his identity.

  1354. And he

  1355. has become

  1356. what he

  1357. worships.

  1358. And in

  1359. contrast,

  1360. Lazarus, who

  1361. is the one

  1362. who trusts

  1363. God in

  1364. this picture,

  1365. he has

  1366. nothing, but

  1367. he still

  1368. has a

  1369. name, he

  1370. has an

  1371. identity.

  1372. And

  1373. Lazarus

  1374. knows who

  1375. he is,

  1376. and who

  1377. he is, and

  1378. he knows

  1379. what his

  1380. purpose is.

  1381. And despite

  1382. all the

  1383. terrible

  1384. circumstances

  1385. in his

  1386. life, there's

  1387. still an

  1388. identity, there's

  1389. still a

  1390. self through

  1391. it all.

  1392. But when

  1393. it comes to

  1394. the rich man,

  1395. his whole

  1396. life was

  1397. built around

  1398. riches.

  1399. His status,

  1400. his wealth,

  1401. his sins, and

  1402. if those things

  1403. were to go, there

  1404. would be no one

  1405. and nothing

  1406. left.

  1407. And so when

  1408. the rich man

  1409. died as he

  1410. did, his

  1411. identity died

  1412. with him, and

  1413. he's simply the

  1414. man with no

  1415. name.

  1416. And I think

  1417. that is Jesus'

  1418. way of pointing

  1419. to us the

  1420. result of

  1421. rejecting God

  1422. and following

  1423. idols.

  1424. the rich man,

  1425. his idol was

  1426. his wealth, his

  1427. identity was

  1428. that he was a

  1429. rich man.

  1430. But if that

  1431. is your idol,

  1432. isn't it,

  1433. something happens,

  1434. you lose your

  1435. money, the

  1436. bottom drops

  1437. out of the

  1438. market, and

  1439. you melt down,

  1440. you become what

  1441. you worshipped.

  1442. And it could

  1443. well be,

  1444. couldn't it,

  1445. that this

  1446. morning your

  1447. idol actually

  1448. is not money,

  1449. it is your

  1450. reputation.

  1451. or it is

  1452. sport, or

  1453. it is your

  1454. popularity, or

  1455. it is your

  1456. looks, or

  1457. it is your

  1458. career.

  1459. And whatever

  1460. it is, that

  1461. idol has become

  1462. your whole

  1463. self, so if

  1464. it was taken

  1465. away, life

  1466. wouldn't be

  1467. worth living

  1468. anymore.

  1469. And you've

  1470. lost yourself.

  1471. And that

  1472. wasn't what you

  1473. built your

  1474. life on, but

  1475. now you've

  1476. lost it, and

  1477. you've become

  1478. a shell of

  1479. who you

  1480. were.

  1481. And you

  1482. resemble what

  1483. you revere

  1484. in the worst

  1485. case for

  1486. ruin.

  1487. And so

  1488. in hell

  1489. this morning

  1490. there are

  1491. people who

  1492. are fathers

  1493. because they

  1494. made their

  1495. children an

  1496. idol.

  1497. And they

  1498. are architects

  1499. because they

  1500. made their

  1501. architecture an

  1502. idol.

  1503. And they

  1504. are rich

  1505. men.

  1506. And there

  1507. are people

  1508. that bound

  1509. their identity

  1510. in anything

  1511. but God, and

  1512. they've lost

  1513. their identity.

  1514. You become a

  1515. shell of who

  1516. you were, you

  1517. resemble what

  1518. you revere, and

  1519. in the worst

  1520. case for

  1521. ruin.

  1522. And the

  1523. irony of all

  1524. this is while

  1525. these idols

  1526. that Isaiah

  1527. is speaking

  1528. about are

  1529. nothing, he

  1530. wants us to

  1531. understand,

  1532. therefore, that

  1533. they do have a

  1534. power in our

  1535. lives.

  1536. So go back

  1537. with me to

  1538. Isaiah 44,

    Isaiah 44:20

  1539. verse 20.

  1540. Isaiah 44,

    Isaiah 44:20

  1541. verse 20.

  1542. He feeds

  1543. on ashes, a

  1544. deluded heart

  1545. has led him

  1546. astray, and

  1547. he cannot

  1548. deliver himself.

  1549. Is there

  1550. not a lie in

  1551. my right hand?

  1552. Why can't he

  1553. save himself?

  1554. He can't

  1555. save himself

  1556. because he's

  1557. enslaved.

  1558. Sin

  1559. enslaved.

  1560. And the

  1561. idolater is

  1562. hooked on the

  1563. idol, and

  1564. he's lost all

  1565. capacity to

  1566. free himself

  1567. or herself.

  1568. And so we

  1569. see, don't

  1570. we, the

  1571. wonderful irony

  1572. at the end

  1573. of verse 20.

  1574. Is there

  1575. not a lie

  1576. that I am

  1577. holding in

  1578. my right hand?

  1579. And the

  1580. idolater thinks

  1581. that he is

  1582. holding on to

  1583. the idol, but

  1584. the truth of

  1585. Isaiah 44 is

  1586. that the idol

  1587. is holding on

  1588. to him.

  1589. And he

  1590. cannot break

  1591. away from

  1592. the bondage

  1593. or of what

  1594. he calls a

  1595. lie that is

  1596. false in God.

  1597. He's still

  1598. holding on to

  1599. it.

  1600. Is this

  1601. no lie?

  1602. He won't

  1603. give it

  1604. up.

  1605. He's lost

  1606. his freedom,

  1607. the absurdity

  1608. of idolatry,

  1609. and Isaiah

  1610. shows you how

  1611. futile it is,

  1612. and how

  1613. enslaving it

  1614. is, and

  1615. how you

  1616. should run

  1617. away from

  1618. it.

  1619. Isaiah's

  1620. commentary

  1621. drips with

  1622. sarcasm, but

  1623. you and I

  1624. need to feel

  1625. the weight.

  1626. That the

  1627. one true

  1628. God has

  1629. revealed himself,

  1630. and there

  1631. is no one

  1632. like him.

  1633. But if you

  1634. and I decide

  1635. to run after

  1636. other things

  1637. for your

  1638. significance,

  1639. for your

  1640. meaning,

  1641. for your

  1642. glory,

  1643. for your

  1644. identity,

  1645. you will

  1646. become

  1647. spiritually

  1648. lifeless,

  1649. and dense,

  1650. like those

  1651. lifeless idols

  1652. that you

  1653. pursue,

  1654. in the end.

  1655. In the end,

  1656. you lose

  1657. your very

  1658. self,

  1659. and you

  1660. become

  1661. nameless.

  1662. Well,

  1663. Isaiah

  1664. isn't quite

  1665. done yet,

  1666. and he

  1667. wants to

  1668. come back

  1669. to give you

  1670. and I

  1671. the good

  1672. news,

  1673. and that

  1674. is the

  1675. redemptive

  1676. reasons why

  1677. you and I

  1678. should worship

  1679. God.

  1680. Thirdly,

  1681. the redemptive

  1682. reasons why

  1683. you and I

  1684. should worship

  1685. God,

  1686. and the

  1687. reason comes

  1688. in verses

  1689. 21-23,

  1690. can you see

  1691. that?

  1692. Remember these

  1693. things,

  1694. O Jacob

  1695. and Israel,

  1696. for you are

  1697. my servant,

  1698. I formed

  1699. you,

  1700. you are

  1701. my servant,

  1702. O Israel,

  1703. you will

  1704. not be

  1705. forgotten

  1706. by me,

  1707. I blotted

  1708. out your

  1709. transgressions

  1710. like a

  1711. cloud,

  1712. and your

  1713. sins

  1714. like mist,

  1715. return to

  1716. me,

  1717. for I

  1718. have

  1719. redeemed

  1720. you.

  1721. Sing,

  1722. O heavens,

  1723. for the

  1724. Lord is

  1725. dead,

  1726. shout,

  1727. depths of

  1728. the

  1729. earth,

  1730. break

  1731. forth into

  1732. singing

  1733. of

  1734. mountains,

  1735. of forest

  1736. and every

  1737. tree in

  1738. it,

  1739. for the

  1740. Lord has

  1741. redeemed

  1742. God says

  1743. to his

  1744. people,

  1745. his church,

  1746. do you see

  1747. how the

  1748. idolaters

  1749. fashioned you?

  1750. They're

  1751. gods of

  1752. wood,

  1753. I fashion

  1754. you,

  1755. I fashion

  1756. you,

  1757. you're my

  1758. people to

  1759. whom I

  1760. committed.

  1761. And he

  1762. calls on

  1763. the people

  1764. and he

  1765. calls on

  1766. us to

  1767. remember

  1768. two things

  1769. which we

  1770. need to

  1771. remember

  1772. as we

  1773. come to

  1774. the

  1775. table,

  1776. two things

  1777. which set

  1778. God apart

  1779. from an

  1780. idol,

  1781. every other

  1782. God in

  1783. this world,

  1784. first of all

  1785. he says I

  1786. always keep

  1787. my promises,

  1788. it's what

  1789. he's saying

  1790. when he

  1791. says I

  1792. will not

  1793. forget you,

  1794. remembering

  1795. and forgetfulness

  1796. in the

  1797. Old Testament,

  1798. it's

  1799. covenantal

  1800. language,

  1801. it's not

  1802. that God

  1803. suddenly,

  1804. oh I

  1805. have

  1806. forgotten

  1807. and now

  1808. I

  1809. remember,

  1810. no of

  1811. course not,

  1812. God has

  1813. said I

  1814. made promises

  1815. to you and

  1816. I will act

  1817. on those

  1818. promises,

  1819. and you

  1820. can be sure

  1821. about that,

  1822. I will never

  1823. break my

  1824. promises to

  1825. you in

  1826. 2017,

  1827. I don't

  1828. care what

  1829. your idol of

  1830. choice is

  1831. today,

  1832. and there's

  1833. probably as

  1834. many as

  1835. there are

  1836. people today,

  1837. I guarantee

  1838. you whatever

  1839. idol you're

  1840. tempted to

  1841. pursue,

  1842. it never

  1843. keeps its

  1844. promises,

  1845. that's it,

  1846. the relationship

  1847. that you

  1848. thought would

  1849. bring you all

  1850. the satisfaction

  1851. in the world,

  1852. has it done

  1853. that?

  1854. Of course it

  1855. hasn't,

  1856. you've got the

  1857. money,

  1858. you've got the

  1859. job,

  1860. has it brought

  1861. the satisfaction?

  1862. Of course it

  1863. doesn't,

  1864. whatever

  1865. cares,

  1866. my idol

  1867. dangles in

  1868. front of you,

  1869. whether it's

  1870. success,

  1871. prosperity,

  1872. or happy

  1873. family life,

  1874. or perfect

  1875. children,

  1876. or a fat

  1877. bank balance,

  1878. the promise

  1879. will be

  1880. broken,

  1881. and yet

  1882. God says

  1883. to you,

  1884. I have

  1885. never,

  1886. I have

  1887. never,

  1888. and I

  1889. will never

  1890. ever break

  1891. my promises

  1892. to you,

  1893. and secondly

  1894. God says

  1895. I want you

  1896. to remember

  1897. also that

  1898. I've forgiven

  1899. you when

  1900. you failed

  1901. me,

  1902. I love

  1903. the picture

  1904. of verse

  1905. 22,

  1906. I've blotted

  1907. out your

  1908. transgressions,

  1909. swiped

  1910. them away,

  1911. I've

  1912. swiped

  1913. them away,

  1914. I've blotted

  1915. mouths like

  1916. a cloud,

  1917. and your

  1918. sins like

  1919. the morning

  1920. mist,

  1921. an idol

  1922. will never

  1923. forgive you

  1924. when you

  1925. fail it,

  1926. let's say

  1927. your idol

  1928. is your

  1929. career,

  1930. and that's

  1931. where you

  1932. gain this

  1933. great reputation,

  1934. and it's

  1935. where you

  1936. derive your

  1937. ultimate sense

  1938. of significance,

  1939. and importance

  1940. in life,

  1941. and you've

  1942. been so

  1943. diligent in

  1944. making offerings,

  1945. you've worked

  1946. long hours,

  1947. when other

  1948. people have

  1949. gone home,

  1950. you've been

  1951. there,

  1952. you've missed

  1953. really important

  1954. times with your

  1955. friends and your

  1956. families,

  1957. because you

  1958. had to work,

  1959. and then you

  1960. back off maybe

  1961. a little bit,

  1962. you realise

  1963. it's beginning to

  1964. affect your

  1965. health,

  1966. or your

  1967. family tells

  1968. you,

  1969. you've got to

  1970. back off,

  1971. or because of

  1972. your conscience,

  1973. and does your

  1974. idol say,

  1975. no that's

  1976. okay,

  1977. I'll be

  1978. there for

  1979. you,

  1980. no chance

  1981. does it,

  1982. it says no

  1983. more offerings

  1984. to deal it

  1985. off,

  1986. an idol never

  1987. forgives you

  1988. when you

  1989. fail it,

  1990. but the

  1991. Bible,

  1992. he'll forgive

  1993. you,

  1994. because he

  1995. has forgiven

  1996. you,

  1997. have you

  1998. failed God

  1999. this morning,

  2000. I know I

  2001. have,

  2002. and I've

  2003. got pretty

  2004. good sense

  2005. listening to

  2006. my Christian

  2007. life,

  2008. what the

  2009. idols in

  2010. my heart

  2011. are,

  2012. and they

  2013. tend to pull

  2014. me away

  2015. from God,

  2016. and when I

  2017. fail him,

  2018. when I go

  2019. after these

  2020. other things,

  2021. because I

  2022. think they're

  2023. promising me

  2024. things,

  2025. and they're

  2026. promising me

  2027. things that

  2028. they can

  2029. never give,

  2030. how foolish,

  2031. what does

  2032. God require

  2033. of me when

  2034. I fail him,

  2035. look again at

  2036. what he says

  2037. in verse 22,

  2038. he says,

  2039. I have blotted

  2040. out your

  2041. transgressions

  2042. like a cloud,

  2043. and your sins

  2044. like a mist,

  2045. return to

  2046. me,

  2047. return to

  2048. me,

  2049. for I have

  2050. redeemed,

  2051. just notice

  2052. at the end

  2053. of verse 22,

  2054. return to

  2055. me,

  2056. for I will

  2057. redeem you,

  2058. is that what it

  2059. says,

  2060. no it's not,

  2061. fear not,

  2062. for I have

  2063. redeemed you,

  2064. God doesn't

  2065. say,

  2066. come back to

  2067. me this

  2068. morning,

  2069. and maybe,

  2070. you know,

  2071. we can talk

  2072. about it,

  2073. we can work

  2074. this through,

  2075. you try harder,

  2076. and I'll

  2077. redeem you,

  2078. I'll forgive

  2079. you this

  2080. time,

  2081. no return to

  2082. me,

  2083. because I've

  2084. redeemed you,

  2085. return to

  2086. me,

  2087. because I've

  2088. already slept,

  2089. away your

  2090. offences are

  2091. a cloud,

  2092. you see the

  2093. order,

  2094. that is the

  2095. gospel,

  2096. you and I,

  2097. we don't

  2098. earn our way

  2099. out of

  2100. idolatry,

  2101. we can only

  2102. turn back to

  2103. God when we've

  2104. gone the other

  2105. direction,

  2106. because he has

  2107. already done for

  2108. us by his

  2109. grace,

  2110. he's dealt

  2111. with our

  2112. sins,

  2113. he's dealt

  2114. with our

  2115. idolatry

  2116. already,

  2117. he's redeemed

  2118. us already,

  2119. you say,

  2120. how has he

  2121. done that,

  2122. well for the

  2123. Israelites they

  2124. would have

  2125. looked back to

  2126. the Exodus,

  2127. that redemption

  2128. of which God

  2129. is speaking

  2130. about,

  2131. but for the

  2132. Christian today

  2133. our focus is

  2134. different isn't it,

  2135. we look back to

  2136. another day,

  2137. we come to the

  2138. Lord's table and

  2139. we look back to

  2140. a greater redemption,

  2141. a greater

  2142. Exodus,

  2143. because the

  2144. New Testament

  2145. says you look

  2146. back to the

  2147. cross,

  2148. and that's

  2149. where he

  2150. redeemed you,

  2151. and so the

  2152. Apostle Paul

  2153. writing in

  2154. Colossians 1

  2155. says he's

  2156. delivered us

  2157. from the

  2158. domain of

  2159. darkness,

  2160. and he's

  2161. transferred us

  2162. to the

  2163. kingdom of

  2164. his beloved

  2165. son,

  2166. in whom we

  2167. have redemption,

  2168. forgiveness of

  2169. sins,

  2170. it is on the

  2171. cross that

  2172. God redeemed

  2173. us through

  2174. the death of

  2175. Jesus,

  2176. it is on the

  2177. cross that

  2178. God swept

  2179. our offenses

  2180. like a cloud

  2181. away,

  2182. on the cross

  2183. the Lord

  2184. Jesus bore

  2185. the penalty

  2186. for our

  2187. offenses,

  2188. Jesus bore

  2189. the penalty

  2190. for our

  2191. idolatry,

  2192. and it's

  2193. through the

  2194. cross God

  2195. says to

  2196. you I

  2197. want you

  2198. now to

  2199. have a

  2200. new

  2201. start,

  2202. I want

  2203. you to

  2204. have a

  2205. new

  2206. life,

  2207. and I

  2208. want you

  2209. to experience

  2210. transformation,

  2211. and to

  2212. know what

  2213. real significance

  2214. is,

  2215. and what

  2216. real meaning

  2217. is,

  2218. and the

  2219. things that

  2220. the idol

  2221. promised you

  2222. that they

  2223. will never

  2224. deliver,

  2225. he says in

  2226. Christ redemption

  2227. is already

  2228. yours,

  2229. in Christ

  2230. the forgiveness

  2231. of sins

  2232. is guaranteed,

  2233. God says I've

  2234. done it,

  2235. and so return

  2236. to me,

  2237. or for those

  2238. who are here

  2239. this morning

  2240. who can't

  2241. return because

  2242. you've never

  2243. turned to

  2244. begin with,

  2245. he says to

  2246. you this

  2247. morning,

  2248. turn to

  2249. me,

  2250. because if

  2251. you turn

  2252. to me,

  2253. and you

  2254. trust in

  2255. me,

  2256. this can

  2257. be true

  2258. of you

  2259. as well,

  2260. your sin

  2261. has been

  2262. painful,

  2263. it's been

  2264. wiped clear,

  2265. and you

  2266. this morning

  2267. can be

  2268. redeemed

  2269. to you,

  2270. and as

  2271. you read

  2272. through this

  2273. chapter like

  2274. I have

  2275. this week,

  2276. you think why

  2277. on earth do

  2278. I ever go

  2279. after those

  2280. other things,

  2281. why do I

  2282. look at the

  2283. Babylonians and

  2284. the Assyrians

  2285. around me and

  2286. think maybe

  2287. there is

  2288. something to

  2289. this

  2290. idolatry

  2291. do,

  2292. and you

  2293. read a passage

  2294. like this and

  2295. you realise how

  2296. absolutely mad it

  2297. is to mess with

  2298. lifeless and

  2299. dead idols,

  2300. when the

  2301. living God

  2302. invites you to

  2303. know him,

  2304. you shall

  2305. not have

  2306. any gods

  2307. before you,

  2308. you shall

  2309. not make

  2310. for yourself

  2311. an idol,

  2312. why,

  2313. because the

  2314. living God

  2315. invites you to

  2316. know him.
