  1. Turn to Isaiah chapter 50. Isaiah chapter 50. There are no rugby illustrations this morning.

Isaiah 50 chapter mention Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  2. ! And there is a company called Red Tapebusters. I don't know whether you know them. Red tapebusters,

  3. ! they go into bats for people who are battling bureaucracy to do away with red tape. So perhaps

  4. you've got a parking ticket and you know that the traffic warden was wrong, but who's

  5. going to believe it as low as you? Perhaps you've got a query with your bill and you spend

  6. the whole week being passed from one automated voice to another. Well now you can ring or

  7. email Red Tapebusters and they will sort it out for you. It's a great ministry, isn't

  8. it? We should support that ministry as a church in a way. It's great to have someone who will

  9. go into bat with you. It's great to have someone on your side when the odds against you are

  10. insurmountable. When you're fighting a losing battle. And that is pretty much where Israel is

  11. here in Isaiah. Or at least Isaiah can see that coming. And of course, when something like

  12. that happens, when something terrible and devastating happens, well who do you blame? Who do you

  13. blame when life goes wrong? If you go back to chapter 49 and verse 14, you'll see they blame

  14. God. And it's often, isn't it, a knee-jerk reaction. Where was God on dot dot dot? You point the

  15. finger at the finger at God and you blame God. In a sense, I want to say to you, I don't

  16. think that's unreasonable. Four times from verses 4 to 11, God is called the sovereign Lord.

  17. He is the sovereign Lord, the Lord God. And yet his people are in a lot of trouble. And if

  18. God really is the Lord God, the sovereign God, and he's in control, why is all this happening

  19. to his people? Why are his people about to be booted out of the land to exile in Babylon?

  20. If God is in control, well it either must be his fault, or he's forgotten about it. He's

  21. forsaken us in the words of 49 verse 14. That's what they were thinking. And the Lord's response

  22. in Isaiah chapter 50, you'll notice, is, this is what he says to people who are murmuring

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  23. or complaining about him. Verse 1, where's your mother's certificate of divorce? With

  24. which I sent her away. God says to the people of Israel, go through the papers, go rifling

  25. through the papers, and see if you can find a divorce certificate. You won't, because it's

  26. not there. I have not divorced you. I am a covenant keeping God. I have not divorced you. What has

  27. happened is you have divorced me. And that is what God is saying. I didn't sell you into

  28. slavery. You sold yourself. You've actually got only yourself to blame. Very occasionally

  29. you hear of children divorcing their parents. It's bizarre. It's so odd that it makes the

  30. press. You can imagine kind of in extreme circumstances where that might be necessary. But it's bizarre.

  31. It's unnatural. And yet here is God's people, and they have divorced themselves from God, their

  32. loving Heavenly Father, by their rebellion and their sin and their idolatry. They've divorced

  33. themselves from their loving Heavenly Father, and they will not listen. They will not hear

  34. when he speaks. They will reply to his emails. They won't answer his calls. And when he sends

  35. his prophets, they don't want to hear what he says. And you see, that is the explanation for

  36. why the world is in the state it is. It's because we have divorced ourselves from the

  37. living God. Not only that, we don't listen when he calls us. Like Adam in the garden.

  38. Do you remember, immediately after the rebellion in the garden, God comes looking for Adam in

  39. the garden and says, where are you? And Adam is hiding. He's run away. And so what is God's

  40. answer to the problem? Well, it's not a philosophy, it's not a program. It's a person. And we've

  41. seen that person introduced to us in these servant songs. Isaiah doesn't give him a name.

  42. He just calls him a servant of the Lord. And for Isaiah, and for Israel, this figure is

  43. mysterious. Who is the servant of the Lord if it's not Israel itself? Because the servant's

  44. job was to restore Israel. It's not Cyrus, the pagan Persian king, who God will raise up

  45. to deliver his people from Babylon. Because all Cyrus can do is return them to the land.

  46. But there's something more needed, isn't there? We know that the problem is not just their

  47. situation. Their problem is their sin. Their longing for repatriation. But God is looking

  48. for repentance. And they want to come back to the land. But their need actually is to come

  49. back to the Lord. And who's going to do that? And so Isaiah is shown 700 years before the

  50. time. Before Christ. And so in Isaiah, you have a tracing of the one who is the king.

  51. Isaiah looks down through the centuries. And he's shown what the servant looks like.

  52. So that when the servant comes, you and I will be able to recognise him. And in this song,

  53. the servant speaks and he tells us five things about himself. And then in verse 11, God speaks

  54. to you and I about the servant. And he calls on us to follow him. So let's see what does

  55. the servant say about himself. And I think chapter 50 is really sacred ground. We are taken

  56. in Isaiah 50 into the inner consciousness of the Sermon of the Lord. We are given a glimpse

  57. of the kind of relationship that exists between the Sovereign Lord God and his servant. Five

  58. things. Number one, the servant speaks. The servant speaks. Can you see that in verse 4?

  59. The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught. That I may know how to sustain

  60. with a word him who is weary. The servant's task is to minister to people. People who are hurting,

  61. people who are weighed down with burdens that are too heavy to carry. And he speaks. And

  62. he gives them hope and strength to sustain them. He doesn't lecture them. He doesn't

  63. belittle them. He doesn't crush them. He doesn't demolish them. Can you see it? Verse 4,

  64. The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue to speak the words that sustain the weary.

  65. The servant is supremely concerned with the glory of God. But he is also concerned with your

  66. struggles and my struggles. And so Jesus says, come unto me all you who labour and are heavy

  67. laden. And I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am humble

  68. in heart and you will find rest for yourselves. So the servant this morning knows what you need

  69. to hear. And that's why it's so important to be here this morning. That's why it's so important

  70. to be under the life-giving ministry of the word of God. That if you're burdened in your

  71. Christian life and you are carrying some load, the last thing that you should do is distance

  72. yourself from God's people, isn't it? It's very often the very thing that people do when

  73. life gets tough, when there's lots of struggles, they stop coming to church. They pull away from

  74. God's people. And we're not there as often as we used to be. And we're not listening to the

  75. other words. But that is the very last thing that we should do because the servant of the

  76. Lord has been given an instructed tongue to speak the very word that you need to hear this

  77. morning. And it may be, isn't it, that the very thing that you need to hear in your life

  78. this morning, you'll hear this morning. As the Bible is opened. Because what happens on a

  79. Sunday morning is that it is not the preacher who is speaking to you. It is God's servant,

  80. Jesus, through his ministers, who speaks when they open the Bible and preach the word of God.

  81. How important it is to be under the healthy, life-giving preaching of the word of God.

  82. I want to say, I want to kind of start a new policy this morning. That very often I get

  83. asked, can I meet with you? Can we talk? And very often, those are my people who are

  84. hardly ever here. As I want to say for the next little while, partly because I'm so

  85. busy, but I want to say, come to church for four weeks, morning and evening, hear the word

  86. and then I'm happy to meet with you. And I think that is, I think that is, is actually

  87. biblical. Because it's as the word of God is ministered that you will find your problems

  88. addressed, and mine. Because the servant of the Lord knows what you need to hear this

  89. morning. The servant of the Lord has got a perfect understanding of your heart. He knows

  90. what you're thinking, he knows your heartaches and your doubts and your fears. He's got

  91. just the right word to sustain you. Now we know that, don't we? We know that from the

  92. Gospels. You look at John chapter 3. And Nicodemus, the kind of archbishop of Jerusalem,

    John 3 chapter mention

  93. all the weight of religion comes to see Jesus. What a weight to carry. John chapter 4, you've

    John 4 chapter mention

  94. got the woman at the well. No one wants to know her. She's the woman with no name. She's

  95. lived an empty, sordid lifestyle. She's been through broken relationships. And the sermon

  96. of the Lord knows exactly which words to speak to her. To the religious teacher. He says,

  97. what an ugly, horrible thing religion is. If all you've got is religion, you've not got

  98. Christ. And you need to be rescued from that. And so Jesus has got your right words. He says,

  99. Nicodemus, you're trying to pull yourself up by your bootstraps. But actually what you

  100. need is you need something from outside of you. You need the life of God and the soul of

  101. man. To the woman of the world who's so ostracized by her own community, who is lonely and unhappy.

  102. Jesus has got just the right words. And so every time you read the Gospels, you find, don't

  103. you, that beggars, rich men, tax collectors, the opposite ends of the spectrum, lawyers, criminals,

  104. mothers, prostitutes, political zealots, the establishment, the poor. And the Sermon

  105. of the Lord has got an instructive tongue. And so he knows the right words to speak into

  106. people's lives. Think about it. It's an amazing thing. He's a guy in his early thirties.

  107. He's never been trained in psychology. He's not a qualified counselor. And he speaks to

  108. everyone, doesn't he? Old and young, married and single. And he invites them all and he

  109. says, come, come unto me. Come unto me, all of you who are burden heavy laden. I've got

  110. the words that you need to hear. It's remarkable. What did they say when they came here? Do you

  111. know what they said? They said, nobody ever spoke like this man. We've got our counselors and

  112. our pundits and our preachers and they caught this man and that authority that nobody ever

  113. spoke like this man. What did the woman at the well when she went into that Samaritan village

  114. in John 4 and she said, come and meet a man who told me everything I ever did. Come and

  115. meet a man whose word penetrated my defenses. Isn't that why we invite people to church?

  116. Isn't that why we want to happen? Now of course that is true, isn't it, of Jesus in a way

  117. that it's not true of anyone else. But if you and I are followers of Jesus, if you and I

  118. want to be servants of a servant of the Lord, surely we must learn to talk to people with

  119. the same compassion and understanding. People with empty lives and people with broken relationships

  120. and people with heavy burdens, they gather to Jesus, but they don't gather to us. That's

  121. a great challenge. A group of Christians that can only really have a conversation with another

  122. Christian and they don't need them to argue about it. There's that quote, isn't it, by the comedian, isn't it?

  123. Why do people who've made a friend in Jesus find it so hard to make a friend with anyone else?

  124. And I think there's something in that, isn't there?

  125. But they clamour to Jesus. The sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue to speak the words that will sustain the weary.

  126. Now how do you do that?

  127. So notice the second thing. Can we see what the Sermon of the Lord, what he just tries to find himself?

  128. He says morning by morning, he awakens me, he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

  129. Not only does the Sermon of the Lord have an instructed tongue, he's got a listening ear.

  130. And that goes together, isn't it? The servant can speak to others only because he's the greatest God.

  131. And that gives us a great insight into the secret life of the Lord Jesus.

  132. The private life of the Lord Jesus. According to verse 4, he hasn't gone on the alarm clock to wake him, God wakes him.

  133. And every morning he wakes up. He says, what does God want me to do today? What lesson will God teach me today?

  134. He is my Lord, I am his willing servant. What are my instructions for today? He's a listening servant.

  135. And in verse 4, he's listening as one who wants to be taught.

  136. God has hidden. He has hidden these things from the wise and the learned.

  137. There are things that you can't learn with your IQ and from a textbook.

  138. God has hidden these things from the Pharisees and the scribes, but he reveals them to little children.

  139. And morning by morning, the servant wakes up like a little child and he's eager to learn from his father.

  140. And every day he keeps that appointment with his sovereign Lord.

  141. And so you remember at the start of Mark's Gospel where Jesus is absolute box office and they're clamouring for him.

  142. And he's Simon's mother-in-law and the sick are coming banging down the door and he doesn't have a moment to himself.

  143. And we're told very early in the morning while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went to a solitary place to pray.

  144. And the disciples are looking for him everywhere.

  145. And they say when they find him, everyone is looking for you.

  146. But Jesus had an appointment to keep to me.

  147. With God.

  148. And before he speaks to anyone else, he speaks to his father and he listens and he learns from him.

  149. And I want you to see that the way that it happened for Jesus is not very different from the way that it happens to us.

  150. When he's in the wilderness being tempted and the devil comes to him and tries to get him to do that huge PR stunt, to get on TV.

  151. What did Jesus say?

  152. Jesus, what did he say? Hang on a minute, I'm having my quiet time.

  153. No, what does he say?

  154. No, he doesn't. He says, as it is written.

  155. And he quotes Deuteronomy 8 verses 6-8.

    Deuteronomy 8:6–8

  156. Whether he was reading it that morning, I don't know.

  157. But the point is this.

  158. Jesus knew Deuteronomy.

  159. He was listening to the voice of his father through Deuteronomy.

  160. And when he says the Son of Man must go up to Jerusalem and be handed over to the Gentiles and suffer many things.

  161. And he must die and he must be raised from the dead.

  162. How did he know that?

  163. How did Jesus know that?

  164. Where did he get it from?

  165. Did he kind of just have some kind of theological implant put into his head that he knew this?

  166. No, of course not.

  167. God speaks to him morning by morning through the word that he's written.

  168. And even when the Father speaks to him directly,

  169. do you notice that when the Father speaks to the Son directly,

  170. at his baptism, at his transfiguration,

  171. with a voice from heaven,

  172. what does God speak to his Son?

  173. He speaks to the Bible.

  174. This is my Son,

  175. Psalm 2.

  176. This is my beloved Son,

  177. Abraham and Isaac,

  178. who has to be bound to the altar and be sacrificed.

  179. This is him in whom I delight,

  180. Isaiah 42.

  181. Morning by morning,

  182. day after day,

  183. he searches the scripture as one who wants to be taught.

  184. And that's why he can say,

  185. I do nothing of my own.

  186. I speak what the Father has told me.

  187. These words you hear me say,

  188. they are not my own,

  189. they belong to the Father.

  190. The one who has sent me is with me.

  191. I always do what pleases him.

  192. It's the language of the servant, isn't it?

  193. It's the attitude of the servant.

  194. The servant speaks,

  195. and the servant listens.

  196. And that is why he can speak,

  197. couldn't he,

  198. with such extraordinary power and accuracy.

  199. His words were born out of his daily communion with God.

  200. With his Father.

  201. And he needed that.

  202. So let me ask,

  203. if the Lord Jesus Christ,

  204. the perfect, sinless Son of God,

  205. needed the discipline

  206. of daily listening to God,

  207. how can any of us say,

  208. I'm actually just too busy for us?

  209. There's no room in my life for that.

  210. If the incarnate Word of God

  211. cannot talk to others

  212. without first listening to the Father,

  213. can you?

  214. The sermon's job, first of all,

  215. is to listen.

  216. You cannot speak to people about God

  217. unless you're first speaking to God about people.

  218. Maybe the apostolic priorities,

  219. when they act six,

  220. when they learn from Jesus,

  221. we will give ourselves first,

  222. to prayer,

  223. and then to the ministry of the Word.

  224. In our circles,

  225. we pride ourselves

  226. that we are Word-centered.

  227. That's what we stand for.

  228. And yet, let's be honest,

  229. we see very few conversions.

  230. And our words don't pierce the defenses.

  231. And why is there so, so much preaching in this country

  232. that has so little power?

  233. Yes, it's accurate.

  234. Yes, it's accurate.

  235. Yes, it's not powerful.

  236. And I wonder,

  237. maybe it's because we're not listening.

  238. And so again,

  239. let me plead with you.

  240. Let me plead with you

  241. to make the prayer gather

  242. at a time when we seek the Lord.

  243. And if you're part of this church,

  244. you should be there.

  245. The sermon speaks,

  246. the sermon listens.

  247. Certainly the sermon obeys,

  248. verse 5.

  249. The Lord God has opened my ear

  250. and I was not rebellious.

  251. I turned not backwards.

  252. Do you think he wanted to obey?

  253. Do you?

  254. Think of him in the wilderness.

  255. He's been there six weeks without food.

  256. A strong man can just about survive

  257. without food for six weeks.

  258. But only just.

  259. He's crying out to the Father

  260. to save his life

  261. because he's at the point of death.

  262. The devil's whispering in his ear,

  263. it doesn't have to be like this, Jesus.

  264. You don't have to go through

  265. all the pain and the suffering.

  266. I can give you what you want.

  267. Did God promise you

  268. the nations of the earth?

  269. Look, here they are.

  270. I can give you that.

  271. Just bow down and worship me.

  272. You don't need to go through

  273. all the suffering and the pain.

  274. It even cost you all that.

  275. Don't you think that was

  276. a real temptation for Jesus?

  277. Don't you think that everything

  278. in his humanity

  279. would have wanted that?

  280. It is written,

  281. get behind me, Satan.

  282. You shall worship the Lord God only.

  283. It's not just some trite answer

  284. from a textbook.

  285. It is wrung out of him.

  286. Or in the garden of Gethsemane,

  287. on the ground,

  288. shaking with fear.

  289. View him prostrate

  290. in the garden.

  291. On the ground,

  292. you'll make alive.

  293. There he is shaking

  294. with a black horror,

  295. drops of blood.

  296. Father,

  297. Father, please.

  298. Please,

  299. I don't want to go through

  300. with this.

  301. If there is any other way,

  302. please.

  303. Nevertheless,

  304. I've not drawn back.

  305. I've not been rebellious.

  306. Not my will,

  307. but thine be done.

  308. The obedience of Christ.

  309. I've not drawn back.

  310. I've not been rebellious

  311. to say that.

  312. It's a hymn of saying

  313. when we walk with the Lord

  314. in the light of his word.

  315. In lots of ways,

  316. there's a good chorus.

  317. But the chorus goes like this.

  318. Trust and obey,

  319. for there's no other way

  320. to be happy in Jesus

  321. but to trust and obey.

  322. Do you think Jesus

  323. was happy in the garden?

  324. Was he happy in the garden?

  325. People say to me

  326. this kind of madness.

  327. You always know

  328. it's God's will in your life

  329. because you get

  330. this sense of peace

  331. about it.

  332. The Bible might say that

  333. but actually,

  334. I've got a real sense of peace

  335. about what I'm doing.

  336. It doesn't feel wrong.

  337. Do you think Jesus

  338. had a sense of peace

  339. in the garden,

  340. that's how many?

  341. Do you think

  342. it felt right?

  343. The servant speaks,

  344. the servant listens,

  345. the servant obeys,

  346. and the servant suffers.

  347. Verse 6.

  348. I gave my back

  349. to those who strike,

  350. my cheeks to those

  351. who pull out the ear.

  352. I hid not my face

  353. from disgrace and spitting.

  354. That's where the obedience

  355. of the servant led him.

  356. It's hinted at in 42 and 49.

  357. It's made explicit in 53.

  358. But what we see here

  359. is that the servant's

  360. great task was to suffer

  361. for his people.

  362. And just notice

  363. how he suffers.

  364. Do you see the punishment?

  365. I offered my back

  366. to those who beat me.

  367. It isn't just somebody

  368. getting a kick in

  369. in the street.

  370. He's being judicially

  371. sentenced and flogged.

  372. He's stretched out

  373. on a rack

  374. like a common criminal.

  375. It's a judicial,

  376. horrible sentence.

  377. He is literally

  378. taking a beating.

  379. For you.

  380. And not only is there

  381. punishment,

  382. there's torture,

  383. isn't there?

  384. My cheeks to those

  385. who pull out the beard.

  386. It's beyond a Jewish,

  387. a judicial sentence.

  388. It shows the depth

  389. of human depravity.

  390. that human beings

  391. took the most

  392. beautiful

  393. human life

  394. that's ever lived

  395. and they smashed it

  396. on a cross.

  397. And they treat it

  398. with such disrespect

  399. and there's humiliation

  400. at the end of verse 6,

  401. isn't it?

  402. This is a man

  403. who's humiliated.

  404. I hid not my face

  405. from disgrace

  406. and spitting.

  407. Has anyone ever

  408. spat in your face?

  409. It's happened once to me

  410. during an open air.

  411. It's absolutely

  412. humiliating.

  413. Can you see the contrast?

  414. In chapter 42,

  415. God the Father says,

  416. look,

  417. my servant

  418. in whom I delight.

  419. Behold,

  420. my servant.

  421. And the world says,

  422. he is a joke.

  423. Let's throw him

  424. on the slag heap

  425. of history.

  426. He's an irrelevance.

  427. Here he is

  428. a convicted criminal.

  429. God's servant,

  430. the one who will

  431. save the world,

  432. the one who will

  433. save his people

  434. from their sins,

  435. the one who will

  436. restore them

  437. into a right relationship

  438. with God.

  439. Beaten up.

  440. Spat upon.

  441. Crowds laughing.

  442. And he does it

  443. willingly.

  444. Look at verse 6.

  445. You see,

  446. I gave my back.

  447. This isn't just

  448. some innocent bystander

  449. who's been forced

  450. into the situation

  451. against his will.

  452. Do you remember

  453. John 10?

  454. This is why

  455. the Father loves me.

  456. Because I laid

  457. down my life.

  458. No one takes it

  459. from me.

  460. I have the authority

  461. to lay it down

  462. and take it up again.

  463. This is why

  464. the Father loves me.

  465. I lay down my life.

  466. There's no virtue

  467. in suffering

  468. for suffering's sake.

  469. But suffering

  470. accepted

  471. willingly

  472. out of obedience

  473. to God

  474. is infinitely

  475. precious.

  476. Paul says,

  477. let this mind

  478. give you,

  479. let this be

  480. the model.

  481. Let this be

  482. the Christian mind.

  483. Let him be

  484. your role model.

  485. That he did not

  486. consider equality

  487. with God

  488. something to be

  489. grasped

  490. but made himself

  491. nothing

  492. taking the very

  493. nature of a servant.

  494. He humbled himself

  495. becoming obedient

  496. to death,

  497. even death

  498. on a cross.

  499. That's the

  500. Christian life.

  501. ministers

  502. have pity parties.

  503. We go to our

  504. conferences

  505. and you see

  506. you want to see

  507. how hard my church is.

  508. You want to see

  509. how hard this is.

  510. People can let you

  511. down,

  512. can't they?

  513. You can be

  514. disappointed.

  515. Your family can

  516. suffer.

  517. You can be

  518. misrepresented

  519. as a Christian.

  520. You can be

  521. humiliated.

  522. But what

  523. did you expect?

  524. Paul says,

  525. I want to know

  526. him and the

  527. power of his

  528. resurrection.

  529. Well,

  530. we can all do

  531. without that

  532. power.

  533. I want to know

  534. him and the

  535. power of his

  536. resurrection.

  537. But why?

  538. Why does

  539. Paul say we

  540. should know

  541. the power of

  542. the resurrection

  543. so that we

  544. can share in

  545. his sufferings

  546. and be like

  547. him in his

  548. death?

  549. And that's

  550. why we need

  551. this supernatural

  552. power of God

  553. so that we

  554. can be like

  555. him in his

  556. suffering and

  557. his death.

  558. Jesus said,

  559. if you come

  560. after me,

  561. take up your

  562. cross and

  563. follow me.

  564. The servant

  565. speaks,

  566. the servant

  567. listens,

  568. the servant

  569. obeys and

  570. the servant

  571. suffers.

  572. He's not

  573. just the

  574. humble listener

  575. and the

  576. gentle teacher,

  577. but he's

  578. also the

  579. innocent

  580. sufferer.

  581. bearing shame

  582. and scoffing

  583. rude.

  584. In my

  585. place

  586. condemned,

  587. he stood.

  588. Behold,

  589. the man upon

  590. a cross,

  591. my sin upon

  592. his shoulder,

  593. ashamed,

  594. I hear my

  595. mocking verse.

  596. The crowd

  597. muster

  598. scoffers.

  599. He speaks,

  600. he listens,

  601. he obeys,

  602. he suffers,

  603. he trusts,

  604. he trusts.

  605. Verse 7.

  606. He sees

  607. beyond the

  608. suffering,

  609. doesn't he,

  610. in verse 7.

  611. And he

  612. says,

  613. he who

  614. vindicated

  615. me is

  616. near.

  617. He is

  618. near.

  619. Therefore,

  620. I've not

  621. been

  622. disgraced.

  623. But the

  624. Lord helps

  625. me.

  626. Therefore,

  627. I've not

  628. been

  629. disgraced.

  630. The

  631. sovereign

  632. Lord will

  633. see to it

  634. that I

  635. am not

  636. disgraced.

  637. Luke 9

  638. tells us

  639. what time

  640. Jesus was

  641. walking

  642. towards

  643. Jerusalem,

  644. he sees

  645. the city,

  646. and there's

  647. a real

  648. look of

  649. determination

  650. in his

  651. eyes,

  652. and the

  653. disciples

  654. are

  655. astonished.

  656. It's

  657. as if

  658. they think

  659. he's

  660. really

  661. going to

  662. do it.

  663. He's

  664. going to

  665. go to

  666. Jerusalem.

  667. He's

  668. going to

  669. walk

  670. straight into

  671. trouble.

  672. He knows

  673. it.

  674. It's not

  675. just spin.

  676. He knows

  677. what's going

  678. to happen.

  679. Now,

  680. why would

  681. anyone do

  682. that?

  683. Why would

  684. anyone walk

  685. deliberately

  686. to their

  687. own death?

  688. well,

  689. because he

  690. says,

  691. the Lord

  692. helps me,

  693. therefore I

  694. have not

  695. been

  696. disgraced.

  697. Verse 8,

  698. he who

  699. vindicates

  700. me is

  701. near.

  702. Yes,

  703. he will

  704. be condemned

  705. in the

  706. courts of

  707. men,

  708. but he

  709. will be

  710. vindicated

  711. in the

  712. courts of

  713. heaven.

  714. Who will

  715. contend with

  716. me?

  717. Let us

  718. stand here.

  719. Who is

  720. my adversary?

  721. Let him

  722. come near

  723. to me.

  724. Behold,

  725. the Lord

  726. God

  727. helps me.

  728. Who will

  729. declare me

  730. guilty?

  731. Behold,

  732. all of

  733. them will

  734. wear out

  735. like a

  736. garment.

  737. The moth

  738. will eat

  739. them up.

  740. It's like

  741. when Indiana

  742. Jones in

  743. the films,

  744. he goes

  745. into a

  746. tomb,

  747. and there's

  748. a little

  749. shroud,

  750. and you

  751. touch it,

  752. and it's

  753. like a

  754. puff of

  755. smoke.

  756. Who are

  757. those who

  758. accuse me?

  759. Who are

  760. those who

  761. sit in

  762. his palace

  763. like Pilate?

  764. Herod,

  765. and Rome,

  766. what are

  767. they like?

  768. They are

  769. like,

  770. verse 9,

  771. moth-eaten

  772. garments.

  773. You blow

  774. on them

  775. and they

  776. disappear.

  777. People go

  778. to Rome

  779. to visit

  780. the ruins.

  781. People

  782. call their

  783. dogs

  784. Nero,

  785. and their

  786. sons

  787. Paul.

  788. Who are

  789. those who

  790. stand against

  791. Jesus?

  792. Who is

  793. going to

  794. accuse him?

  795. Who will

  796. stand against

  797. him?

  798. Islam

  799. will not

  800. stand before

  801. him.

  802. Buddha

  803. bow his

  804. chubby knees

  805. to you.

  806. And every

  807. tongue will

  808. confess.

  809. And so I

  810. don't know if

  811. you're being

  812. slandered or

  813. persecuted or

  814. written off by

  815. society, but

  816. you need to

  817. know this,

  818. all of that

  819. will disintegrate

  820. like a moth

  821. on the day

  822. of judgment.

  823. And every

  824. knee will

  825. bow.

  826. And so what

  827. happened?

  828. God reversed

  829. the verdict,

  830. didn't it?

  831. They thought

  832. we'll crucify

  833. him with

  834. wicked hands

  835. and crucify

  836. him.

  837. You thought

  838. we're

  839. finished

  840. with him.

  841. We'll

  842. remember

  843. Jesus of

  844. Nazareth

  845. in ten

  846. years'

  847. time.

  848. But this

  849. same

  850. Jesus,

  851. the preaching

  852. of Acts

  853. tells us,

  854. you took

  855. and crucified

  856. God,

  857. raised him

  858. from the

  859. dead,

  860. and made

  861. him to

  862. be the

  863. Lord and

  864. Christ.

  865. And by

  866. doing that

  867. he served

  868. notice that

  869. one day,

  870. on that

  871. final day,

  872. every knee

  873. will bow

  874. to him and

  875. every tongue

  876. confess that

  877. Jesus Christ

  878. is Lord.

  879. Now look

  880. with me again

  881. at verses

  882. eight and

  883. nine.

  884. Where have

  885. you seen

  886. them before?

  887. Where have

  888. you seen

  889. them before?

  890. They should

  891. ring a

  892. bow,

  893. shouldn't

  894. they?

  895. Just look at

  896. them again.

  897. Who will

  898. contend with

  899. me?

  900. who is my

  901. adversary?

  902. It's

  903. Romans

  904. eight.

  905. Who will

  906. bring any

  907. charge against

  908. God's elect?

  909. If God is

  910. for us,

  911. who can be

  912. against us?

  913. In the

  914. resurrection of

  915. Jesus Christ,

  916. not only is he

  917. vindicated,

  918. but because we

  919. are united to

  920. Christ,

  921. we are

  922. vindicated in

  923. him.

  924. He was

  925. delivered for

  926. our offenses.

  927. He didn't

  928. die for any

  929. crime he

  930. committed.

  931. He was

  932. delivered for

  933. our offenses,

  934. and raised

  935. for our

  936. justification.

  937. As we

  938. close,

  939. there are

  940. only two

  941. responses you

  942. can make to

  943. this.

  944. Verses 10

  945. and 11,

  946. you can go

  947. the servant's

  948. way,

  949. and you can

  950. follow him,

  951. or you can

  952. make a path

  953. for yourself.

  954. Who,

  955. verses 10

  956. and 11?

  957. George

  958. VI was

  959. the present

  960. queen's

  961. father.

  962. A genuine

  963. Christian man,

  964. he's the guy

  965. from the

  966. king's

  967. speech.

  968. And he

  969. made a

  970. very famous

  971. speech,

  972. you may

  973. know it,

  974. on Christmas

  975. day,

  976. 1939,

  977. three months

  978. after Britain

  979. declared war.

  980. And he

  981. said this,

  982. I believe

  983. from my

  984. heart that the

  985. cause which

  986. binds together

  987. our people

  988. and our

  989. gallant and

  990. faithful allies

  991. is the

  992. cause of

  993. Christian

  994. civilization.

  995. On no

  996. other basis

  997. can a true

  998. civilization be

  999. built.

  1000. Let us

  1001. remember that

  1002. through the

  1003. dark times

  1004. ahead of us,

  1005. and when we

  1006. are making

  1007. the peace

  1008. for which

  1009. all men

  1010. pray.

  1011. A new

  1012. year is at

  1013. hand,

  1014. we cannot

  1015. tell what

  1016. it will

  1017. bring.

  1018. If it

  1019. brings peace,

  1020. how thankful

  1021. we should all

  1022. be.

  1023. If it

  1024. brings

  1025. continued

  1026. struggle,

  1027. we shall

  1028. be undaunted.

  1029. In the

  1030. meantime,

  1031. I feel that

  1032. we shall

  1033. all find

  1034. courage with

  1035. the words

  1036. with which

  1037. I close.

  1038. I said to

  1039. the man

  1040. who stood

  1041. at the

  1042. gate of

  1043. the year,

  1044. give me

  1045. a light,

  1046. that I

  1047. may tread

  1048. safely into

  1049. the unknown.

  1050. And he

  1051. replied,

  1052. go out

  1053. into the

  1054. darkness,

  1055. and put

  1056. your hand

  1057. into the

  1058. hand of

  1059. God,

  1060. and that

  1061. shall be

  1062. to you

  1063. better than

  1064. light,

  1065. and safer

  1066. than a

  1067. known

  1068. way.

  1069. Isn't

  1070. that what

  1071. Isaiah is

  1072. saying in

  1073. verse 10?

  1074. Isaiah is

  1075. saying to

  1076. the exiles,

  1077. and he

  1078. says to

  1079. you and

  1080. I,

  1081. put your

  1082. hand into

  1083. the hand

  1084. of God,

  1085. and it

  1086. will be

  1087. to you

  1088. better than

  1089. light,

  1090. safer than

  1091. a known

  1092. way.

  1093. And when

  1094. you do

  1095. that,

  1096. when you

  1097. repent of

  1098. your

  1099. autonomy,

  1100. and when

  1101. you say,

  1102. Lord,

  1103. I am no

  1104. longer going

  1105. to run

  1106. my life,

  1107. I'm going

  1108. to allow

  1109. you,

  1110. by your

  1111. word and

  1112. spirit to

  1113. run my

  1114. life,

  1115. the lights

  1116. don't suddenly

  1117. switch on,

  1118. do they?

  1119. And as

  1120. a Christian,

  1121. we have to

  1122. say,

  1123. a lot of

  1124. the time,

  1125. you're still

  1126. in the

  1127. dark,

  1128. and there

  1129. are still

  1130. many dark

  1131. experiences.

  1132. They were

  1133. in exile in

  1134. Babylon,

  1135. but there is

  1136. bereavement,

  1137. and there is

  1138. despair,

  1139. and there is

  1140. depression,

  1141. and there is

  1142. loneliness in

  1143. the Christian

  1144. life.

  1145. But this

  1146. promise to

  1147. the exiles

  1148. is a

  1149. promise for

  1150. you and

  1151. I,

  1152. that as

  1153. life is

  1154. difficult,

  1155. like it

  1156. was for

  1157. them,

  1158. immersed in

  1159. alien culture,

  1160. fumbling

  1161. around the

  1162. corner,

  1163. they didn't

  1164. know what

  1165. was going

  1166. to happen

  1167. next,

  1168. but if

  1169. you put

  1170. your hand

  1171. into the

  1172. hand of

  1173. God,

  1174. it will

  1175. be better

  1176. to you

  1177. than a

  1178. known way,

  1179. better than

  1180. light.

  1181. church.

  1182. And if

  1183. you've never

  1184. done that,

  1185. will you

  1186. do it

  1187. this morning?

  1188. Will you

  1189. trust in

  1190. God to

  1191. follow his

  1192. sermon?

  1193. We have

  1194. the benefit

  1195. of hindsight.

  1196. Isaiah saw

  1197. palely,

  1198. didn't he?

  1199. But we

  1200. see in

  1201. fulfilment

  1202. that Jesus

  1203. is God's

  1204. servant,

  1205. who came

  1206. not to be

  1207. served,

  1208. but to

  1209. serve and

  1210. give his

  1211. life as a

  1212. ransom for

  1213. many.

  1214. So won't

  1215. you put

  1216. your hand

  1217. into his?

  1218. Because there

  1219. is an

  1220. alternative if

  1221. you will not

  1222. do that.

  1223. Can you see

  1224. that in

  1225. verse 11?

  1226. that if

  1227. you won't

  1228. trust him,

  1229. the only

  1230. person you

  1231. can trust

  1232. is yourself.

  1233. That,

  1234. yeah,

  1235. feel free,

  1236. kindle a

  1237. fire,

  1238. who equip

  1239. yourselves

  1240. with burning

  1241. torches,

  1242. walk by the

  1243. light of your

  1244. fire and

  1245. by the

  1246. torches

  1247. that you've

  1248. kindled.

  1249. This you

  1250. have from

  1251. my hand,

  1252. that you

  1253. shall lie

  1254. down in

  1255. torment.

  1256. That's the

  1257. alternative.

  1258. To live

  1259. life.

  1260. By your

  1261. own way.

  1262. To light

  1263. your own

  1264. torch.

  1265. To refuse

  1266. to put your

  1267. hand in

  1268. his hand,

  1269. to say we

  1270. can't trust

  1271. the servant.

  1272. To not

  1273. trust the

  1274. one who's

  1275. got the

  1276. words to

  1277. sustain you.

  1278. The one

  1279. who laid

  1280. down his

  1281. life for

  1282. you.

  1283. And you

  1284. can't trust

  1285. yourself to

  1286. him.

  1287. And so

  1288. you will

  1289. lie down

  1290. in torment.

  1291. And torment

  1292. means torment.

  1293. to light

  1294. your own

  1295. torch.

  1296. There are

  1297. only two

  1298. ways to

  1299. go.

  1300. And

  1301. whichever

  1302. way you

  1303. choose,

  1304. God will

  1305. give you

  1306. exactly what

  1307. you ask

  1308. for.

  1309. You can

  1310. either rely

  1311. on him,

  1312. and he

  1313. will take

  1314. you through

  1315. the darkness

  1316. of this

  1317. life safely,

  1318. or,

  1319. verse 10,

  1320. you choose

  1321. to ignore

  1322. him, live

  1323. by your

  1324. own light,

  1325. and he

  1326. will leave

  1327. you on

  1328. your own

  1329. now and

  1330. forever and

  1331. ever and

  1332. ever.

  1333. That's what

  1334. the Bible

  1335. means by

  1336. tell.

  1337. And it

  1338. is out of

  1339. darkness,

  1340. and it

  1341. is out of

  1342. torment.

  1343. And so I

  1344. plead with you

  1345. this morning.

  1346. You will

  1347. have no one

  1348. to blame

  1349. but yourself.

  1350. We receive

  1351. from the

  1352. Lord exactly

  1353. what we

  1354. ask for.

  1355. Trust in

  1356. him,

  1357. and you

  1358. will lie

  1359. down in

  1360. safety.

  1361. Trust in

  1362. yourself,

  1363. and you

  1364. will lie

  1365. down in

  1366. torment.

  1367. Let's

  1368. pray.

  1369. Let's

  1370. pray.

  1371. Let's

  1372. pray.
