  1. I just want to speak on that one little verse.

  2. In verse 8.

  3. And it's always dangerous isn't it?

  4. When you take one verse

  5. and you kind of take it out of the context that it's in

  6. and you remove it from that

  7. and you can probably end up preaching heresy

  8. and this verse particularly

  9. you can do that.

  10. Because there is a sense in which it's not true.

  11. There is a sense in which Jesus Christ

  12. is not the same yesterday, today and forever.

  13. In fact our salvation

  14. depends upon Jesus Christ

  15. not being the same today

  16. as he was metaphorically yesterday.

  17. So, do you remember?

  18. The Lord Jesus in his incarnation

  19. when he came to earth

  20. when he took on flesh

  21. he became one of us.

  22. Augustine says without ceasing to be what he eternally was

  23. he became what he eternally was not.

  24. He's become one of us isn't he?

  25. The word that was with God

  26. the word that was face to face with God

  27. the word that was there right at the beginning of creation

  28. that word became flesh

  29. and dwelt amongst us

  30. and we beheld his glory

  31. the glory of the one and only

  32. full of grace, grace and truth.

  33. After

  34. he was raised from the dead

  35. he ascended bodily, didn't he?

  36. into heaven.

  37. And so that now

  38. this lunchtime

  39. there is a man

  40. in heaven.

  41. He didn't discard his humanity.

  42. He didn't discard

  43. like a new set of clothes

  44. when he returned

  45. to his father's presence.

  46. And so

  47. at the Lord's Supper

  48. we remember his death

  49. on the cross

  50. until he comes.

  51. I love the words of Luther

  52. he says something like this

  53. I live as though

  54. Christ died yesterday

  55. rose again today

  56. and is coming back tomorrow.

  57. Christ died yesterday

  58. he bled and died upon a cross

  59. he suffered abject pain

  60. and shame and humiliation

  61. yesterday

  62. he died on the cross

  63. today

  64. he is alive from the dead

  65. and so we proclaim him

  66. in word and in sacrament

  67. and he's coming back tomorrow

  68. with all his holy angels

  69. it's not true to say

  70. that Jesus Christ is the same

  71. yesterday, today

  72. and forever.

  73. So clearly

  74. you can't take

  75. verse 8

  76. and rip it out

  77. of its context

  78. in an unqualified way.

  79. And so what I want to do

  80. this morning

  81. is I want to speak about

  82. the unchangeableness

  83. of Jesus Christ.

  84. What does this verse mean

  85. within Hebrews 13?

  86. And the first thing

  87. I want to say

  88. is that Jesus Christ

  89. is always the same person

  90. yesterday

  91. today

  92. and forever

  93. he is always the same

  94. in his person

  95. in his person.

  96. The context is interesting.

  97. Look at verse 7

  98. Remember your leaders

  99. who spoke to you

  100. the word of God

  101. consider the outcome

  102. of their way of life

  103. and imitate their faith.

  104. And then look at

  105. the other bookend

  106. in verse 17

  107. Obey your leaders

  108. submit to them.

  109. So verse 7

  110. Remember your leaders

  111. who spoke the word

  112. of God to you

  113. And then verse 17

  114. We're told to obey

  115. your leaders

  116. and submit to them

  117. for they will give

  118. an account.

  119. So Hebrews 13

  120. is about leadership

  121. It's about

  122. past leaders

  123. Remember them

  124. And it's about

  125. present leaders

  126. Verse 17

  127. So in verse 7

  128. who are their past leaders?

  129. Well we don't exactly know

  130. We think it may be

  131. Stephen

  132. or the first Christian martyr

  133. or James

  134. the brother of our Lord

  135. the leader of the

  136. Jerusalem church

  137. who was beheaded

  138. Remember those leaders

  139. Remember those

  140. who spoke the word

  141. of God to you

  142. Now whenever there's

  143. a new leader

  144. or a change

  145. in leadership

  146. the tendency

  147. is to compare

  148. isn't it

  149. in church life

  150. One tendency

  151. is to romanticise

  152. the past

  153. and idealise

  154. the heroes

  155. of the faith

  156. to put them

  157. on pedestals

  158. I read this

  159. about the pastor

  160. If he visits

  161. his flock

  162. he's nosy

  163. If he doesn't

  164. he's a snob

  165. If he preaches

  166. longer than 10 minutes

  167. it's too long

  168. If he preaches

  169. less than 10 minutes

  170. he can't have

  171. prepared his sermon

  172. If he runs a car

  173. well he's worldly

  174. If he doesn't

  175. he's always late

  176. If he tells a joke

  177. he's flippant

  178. If he doesn't

  179. he's far too serious

  180. If he starts

  181. the sermon on time

  182. his watch must be fast

  183. If he's a minute late

  184. he's keeping

  185. the congregation waiting

  186. If he takes a holiday

  187. he's never in the parish

  188. If he doesn't

  189. he's a stick in the mud

  190. If he runs a bazaar

  191. or a gala

  192. he's money mad

  193. If he doesn't

  194. there's no social life

  195. in this parish

  196. If he has the church

  197. painted and decorated

  198. he's extravagant

  199. If he doesn't

  200. the church is shabby

  201. If he's young

  202. he's inexperienced

  203. If he's getting old

  204. he ought to retire

  205. But when he dies

  206. Ah there's never been

  207. anyone like him

  208. Now that tendency

  209. is in all of us

  210. We make far too much

  211. of men

  212. and too little of Christ

  213. So look at verse 7 again

  214. Remember your leaders

  215. who spoke the word

  216. of God to you

  217. Consider the outcome

  218. of their way of life

  219. Jesus Christ

  220. is the same yesterday

  221. and today forever

  222. You see who is the leader

  223. that we really look to?

  224. Who is the leader

  225. that we really look to?

  226. The leader we look to

  227. is the one

  228. whose way of life

  229. and whose faith

  230. is in Jesus Christ

  231. the same yesterday

  232. today and forever

  233. True Christian leaders

  234. do not strike out

  235. on their own

  236. They don't build a brand

  237. for themselves

  238. They keep in line

  239. with Jesus Christ

  240. They follow the

  241. well-worn paths

  242. of those that have

  243. gone before

  244. who followed Christ

  245. And so

  246. this verse is telling us

  247. that when you look

  248. for leaders

  249. in your church

  250. when we look for

  251. leaders in our church

  252. we are not looking

  253. for original minds

  254. If you are going to be

  255. a leader in Christ's church

  256. and follow a leader

  257. you need to know

  258. where he is going

  259. and you better make sure

  260. that you know

  261. where he is going

  262. in as much as they

  263. follow Christ

  264. You follow them

  265. imitate their way of life

  266. and their faith

  267. Don't follow blindly leaders

  268. only follow leaders

  269. as they follow Jesus

  270. because in the end

  271. he is the king

  272. he is the only head

  273. and king of the church

  274. he is the only leader

  275. who is safe to follow

  276. He is always himself

  277. You can translate it

  278. you can translate it

  279. verse 8

  280. Jesus Christ

  281. always himself

  282. That can be said

  283. of very few people

  284. As we grow older

  285. we change

  286. We see that

  287. don't we

  288. You see that

  289. in your workplace

  290. new young people

  291. come in full

  292. of zeal

  293. and idealistic

  294. and then

  295. the cynical older folk

  296. who have been through it all

  297. they have been around the block

  298. There are very few of us

  299. who are always the same

  300. Circumstances change us

  301. Life situations change us

  302. We are affected

  303. by all sorts of things

  304. We are affected

  305. by the weather

  306. aren't we

  307. but Jesus Christ

  308. is always himself

  309. always the same

  310. Earth did not change him

  311. Heaven hasn't gone to his head

  312. He is the same yesterday

  313. today and forever

  314. He is unchangeably the same

  315. He is always himself

  316. The best of men

  317. The best of leaders

  318. are men at best

  319. And every single leader

  320. has feet of clay

  321. But Jesus Christ

  322. is always himself

  323. Always the same

  324. He is unchangeably the same

  325. in his own person

  326. But secondly

  327. He is unchangeably the same

  328. in his message

  329. He is unchangeably the same

  330. in his message

  331. Just look at the context

  332. It says

  333. Doesn't it

  334. Verse 7

  335. Remember the leaders

  336. who spoke to you

  337. the word of God

  338. Jesus Christ

  339. is the same

  340. yesterday

  341. today

  342. and forever

  343. Don't be carried away

  344. by all sorts of

  345. strange teachings

  346. You see

  347. Jesus Christ

  348. is not only the leader

  349. they are to follow

  350. He is the message

  351. that is to be preached

  352. The words they spoke to you

  353. Verse 7

  354. is all about him

  355. That message

  356. which you heard

  357. from your leaders

  358. was the same

  359. That message about Jesus

  360. is the same

  361. yesterday

  362. today

  363. and forever

  364. Error changes

  365. Now notice

  366. in verse 9

  367. The truth there

  368. is singular

  369. That is singular

  370. Do not be led away

  371. by strange

  372. and diverse

  373. teachings

  374. That is

  375. plural

  376. But can you notice

  377. verse 7

  378. The word of God

  379. is singular

  380. Just notice that

  381. verse 7

  382. The word of God

  383. is singular

  384. But there are

  385. diverse

  386. and strange

  387. teachings

  388. Because once you

  389. move away

  390. from the faith

  391. once delivered

  392. to the saints

  393. you have to keep

  394. reinventing a new

  395. gospel for every age

  396. One of the hallmarks

  397. of God in the Bible

  398. is that nothing

  399. needs changing

  400. nothing needs revising

  401. or adapted

  402. or rewritten

  403. So take the example

  404. I don't want to enter

  405. into the controversy

  406. about evolution

  407. but take the creation

  408. account of Genesis 1

  409. and 2

  410. The creation account

  411. of Genesis 1

  412. and 2

  413. stands for all time

  414. Genesis 1 and 2

  415. can be understood

  416. in any age

  417. It doesn't have to be

  418. written, rewritten

  419. It doesn't have to be

  420. revised for the 21st century

  421. It can be understood

  422. by a caveman

  423. It can be understood

  424. by an Oxford scientist

  425. It's one of the

  426. hallmarks of God

  427. But error is constantly

  428. being rewritten

  429. and revised

  430. and updated

  431. John Stott

  432. in his book

  433. The Contemporary Christian

  434. He says there have been

  435. 13 different

  436. interpretations

  437. of Jesus Christ

  438. 13 different attempts

  439. to fashion him

  440. according to the age

  441. So he talks of

  442. Jesus the ascetic

  443. The Pair Galilean

  444. The Cosmic Christ

  445. The Teacher of Common Sense

  446. The Clown of God's Spell

  447. The Star of Jesus Christ

  448. Superstar

  449. The Revolutionary

  450. The Socialist

  451. The Mystic

  452. The Magician

  453. The Carpenter

  454. The Management Consultant

  455. You name it

  456. People are always

  457. trying to reinvent

  458. who Jesus is

  459. But he's not

  460. Jesus is always the same

  461. The message

  462. which you heard

  463. from them

  464. is the message

  465. you need today

  466. It's the same

  467. yesterday

  468. today and forever

  469. and Jesus

  470. never needs updating

  471. or adapting

  472. He is always new

  473. not in the sense

  474. of being novel

  475. but in the sense

  476. of freshness

  477. It's a very privilege

  478. isn't it

  479. to preach Jesus Christ

  480. that's what I've thought

  481. of as I've read

  482. this verse

  483. but I want you to see

  484. that what we do

  485. in the church today

  486. is actually

  487. nearly almost

  488. the opposite

  489. remember your elders

  490. who were these leaders

  491. while they were the

  492. apostles of our Lord

  493. Jesus Christ

  494. remember your leaders

  495. who spoke the word

  496. of God to you

  497. and he says

  498. remember what

  499. they spoke to you

  500. but what we've done

  501. in the church today

  502. is we would reverse

  503. that

  504. so it's not we

  505. who remember

  506. what people like

  507. Paul preached

  508. about Jesus

  509. today

  510. Paul has to remember

  511. what we've discovered

  512. isn't that right

  513. so let's take

  514. women's ordination

  515. let's take

  516. homosexuality

  517. what is that issue

  518. about

  519. is it that Paul

  520. has to remember

  521. how enlightened

  522. we are

  523. no it's an issue

  524. of the authority

  525. of scripture

  526. isn't it

  527. basically it comes

  528. down to this

  529. will we follow

  530. Paul

  531. are we going to

  532. remember what the

  533. Bible spoke to us

  534. and what Paul

  535. wrote

  536. or does he have

  537. to remember

  538. what we think

  539. today

  540. does he have

  541. to have our

  542. view on things

  543. do we follow

  544. Paul

  545. in the first

  546. century AD

  547. or does he have

  548. to fit in with

  549. modern culture

  550. and political

  551. correctness

  552. so that what

  553. he wrote

  554. well actually it

  555. needs to be

  556. reinterpreted for

  557. today

  558. it has to be

  559. contextualised

  560. it has to be

  561. lifted

  562. out of that

  563. first century

  564. setting

  565. and changed

  566. for us today

  567. so that in the

  568. end

  569. Paul

  570. is made

  571. to teach

  572. exactly the

  573. opposite of what

  574. he actually

  575. said

  576. I want to

  577. say to you

  578. that is not

  579. where we stand

  580. as a church

  581. we stand

  582. under the

  583. authority of

  584. the word of

  585. God

  586. and we

  587. remember those

  588. who spoke the

  589. word of God

  590. to us

  591. the authority

  592. of the apostles

  593. of the Lord

  594. Jesus Christ

  595. and they don't

  596. have to remember

  597. what we think

  598. we have to

  599. remember what

  600. they spoke

  601. do you see

  602. that kind of

  603. twisted thinking

  604. is happening

  605. and if you go

  606. down that track

  607. what happens

  608. is the Bible

  609. gets taken

  610. away from

  611. you altogether

  612. so remember

  613. remember the

  614. word that

  615. has been

  616. spoken to

  617. you

  618. we are

  619. Protestants

  620. I used to

  621. think that

  622. word meant

  623. to protest

  624. actually it

  625. doesn't

  626. it means to

  627. confess

  628. it means to

  629. attest

  630. it means to

  631. proclaim

  632. to be

  633. Protestant

  634. is to

  635. proclaim

  636. Jesus Christ

  637. and his

  638. sufficiency

  639. it's the old

  640. story of

  641. Jesus and

  642. his love

  643. it's

  644. unchangeably

  645. the same

  646. in his

  647. person

  648. he's

  649. unchangeably

  650. the same

  651. in his

  652. message

  653. and then

  654. thirdly and

  655. lastly he is

  656. unchangeably

  657. the same

  658. to his

  659. people

  660. it's all

  661. very well

  662. 500 years

  663. from the

  664. reformation

  665. 500 years

  666. from Martin

  667. Luther this

  668. year

  669. it's all

  670. very well

  671. to look

  672. back and

  673. romanticise

  674. what those

  675. men went

  676. through

  677. we all

  678. have heroes

  679. don't we

  680. we can have

  681. heroes

  682. we can go

  683. back to

  684. hear George

  685. Whitfield

  686. preach in

  687. the 18th

  688. century

  689. we can hear

  690. John Wesley

  691. and his

  692. great sermons

  693. Martin Lloyd

  694. Jones in

  695. the last

  696. century

  697. but we

  698. don't live

  699. then we

  700. live now

  701. and we

  702. live don't

  703. we in a

  704. very different

  705. culture and

  706. in a very

  707. different time

  708. and we

  709. have pursued

  710. Christ here

  711. now in the

  712. 21st century

  713. there were

  714. giants in the

  715. land in those

  716. days yes

  717. and we

  718. are a race

  719. of pygmies

  720. by comparison

  721. but don't

  722. forget those

  723. men spoke

  724. the word of

  725. God to you

  726. and sealed

  727. their confession

  728. in their own

  729. blood but they

  730. were just flesh

  731. and blood like

  732. you and I

  733. they were just

  734. men and women

  735. like you and

  736. me times have

  737. changed but

  738. Jesus hasn't

  739. and what he

  740. was to them

  741. he will be to

  742. you

  743. that word that

  744. is used here in

  745. verse 7 is an

  746. interesting word

  747. there's only two

  748. words that

  749. two places where

  750. you find this

  751. word in the

  752. new testament

  753. he talks about

  754. these leaders

  755. these leaders

  756. who spoke the

  757. word of God

  758. consider the

  759. outcome of

  760. their way of

  761. life and that

  762. word is used

  763. it's the same

  764. word that's used

  765. by Paul in

  766. Corinthians

  767. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:13

  768. 10 verse 13

  769. Paul refers to

  770. the wilderness

  771. wanderings and

  772. he reminds the

  773. Corinthians that

  774. it was Christ

  775. who was actually

  776. leading the people

  777. out of Egypt

  778. and the rock

  779. was Christ

  780. who they met

  781. in the wilderness

  782. and he says

  783. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10:13

  784. 10 verse 13

  785. he applies it

  786. to them

  787. he says

  788. God is

  789. faithful

  790. and he will

  791. not allow you

  792. to be tempted

  793. more than you

  794. can bear

  795. but when you

  796. are tempted

  797. when you are

  798. tried

  799. when you are

  800. like those

  801. people in

  802. the wilderness

  803. caught between

  804. literally a rock

  805. and a hard

  806. place

  807. as they came

  808. out of Egypt

  809. and the troops

  810. are chasing

  811. them down

  812. with the Red

  813. Sea in front

  814. of them

  815. they're surrounded

  816. by hills

  817. and mountains

  818. it's a trap

  819. there doesn't

  820. seem to be

  821. anywhere

  822. way out

  823. and just

  824. as Jesus

  825. opened up

  826. the waters

  827. of the Red

  828. Sea

  829. and they

  830. crossed

  831. on dry

  832. ground

  833. Paul says

  834. when you're

  835. tempted

  836. when you're

  837. tried like that

  838. what will he do

  839. he will provide

  840. a way out

  841. an exodus

  842. that's the word

  843. verse 7

  844. that's the word

  845. that is used

  846. here in Hebrews

  847. remember what

  848. Jesus was

  849. to those people

  850. at the Red

  851. Sea

  852. when they're

  853. entangled

  854. in the land

  855. and the Egyptians

  856. are in hot

  857. pursuit

  858. and they're

  859. trapped

  860. and there

  861. doesn't seem

  862. to be

  863. any way

  864. forward

  865. now I

  866. frequently

  867. find myself

  868. in those

  869. situations

  870. don't you

  871. I'm sure

  872. we do

  873. what do we

  874. do in those

  875. situations

  876. where we

  877. are trapped

  878. well we

  879. remember that

  880. Jesus Christ

  881. is the sea

  882. yesterday

  883. today

  884. forever

  885. the Jesus

  886. Christ who

  887. opened up

  888. the Red

  889. Sea and

  890. brought his

  891. people safely

  892. through

  893. that Jesus

  894. Christ is

  895. the same

  896. today as

  897. he was

  898. yesterday

  899. and what

  900. he can do

  901. for them

  902. he can do

  903. for you

  904. he can provide

  905. you with a

  906. way through

  907. that challenge

  908. that you're

  909. facing that

  910. you don't know

  911. how you're

  912. going to cope

  913. with

  914. you say I

  915. don't know

  916. if I've got

  917. the resources

  918. to get through

  919. that well he

  920. is the same

  921. he can provide

  922. you with a

  923. way through

  924. how else do

  925. you explain

  926. someone like

  927. Stephen the

  928. martyr

  929. how do you

  930. explain the

  931. way he died

  932. with his face

  933. being smashed

  934. by rocks

  935. a face like

  936. an angel

  937. remember what

  938. we're told in

  939. Acts 7

  940. as the rocks

  941. are raining

  942. down upon him

  943. he fell on

  944. his knees

  945. and he cried

  946. out Lord

  947. do not hold

  948. this sin

  949. against them

  950. and with that

  951. he fell asleep

  952. how do you

  953. explain a man

  954. like Peter

  955. a man denied

  956. his Lord

  957. with oaths

  958. and curses

  959. before a little

  960. servant girl

  961. I don't

  962. know that

  963. so and so

  964. he said

  965. how do you

  966. explain that

  967. man only

  968. weeks later

  969. preaching on

  970. the day of

  971. Pentecost

  972. and 3000

  973. people are

  974. converted

  975. how do you

  976. explain that

  977. how do you

  978. explain Paul

  979. and Silas

  980. singing hymns

  981. in midnight

  982. in prison

  983. in a rat

  984. infested

  985. hole in the

  986. ground

  987. how do you

  988. explain that

  989. how do you

  990. explain the

  991. courage of

  992. Martin Luther

  993. when the

  994. whole world

  995. is against

  996. him who

  997. said here

  998. am I

  999. here I

  1000. stand

  1001. I can

  1002. do no

  1003. other

  1004. how do you

  1005. explain it

  1006. well the

  1007. only way

  1008. you can

  1009. explain that

  1010. is in

  1011. terms of

  1012. our text

  1013. that Jesus

  1014. Christ is

  1015. the same

  1016. yesterday

  1017. today

  1018. and forever

  1019. what he

  1020. was for

  1021. Luther

  1022. what he

  1023. was for

  1024. Stephen

  1025. what he

  1026. was for

  1027. Peter

  1028. what he

  1029. was for

  1030. Paul

  1031. and

  1032. Silas

  1033. is what

  1034. he is

  1035. for you

  1036. and I

  1037. I don't

  1038. know if

  1039. you know

  1040. the story

  1041. of the man

  1042. who's

  1043. got a job

  1044. painting a

  1045. stripe

  1046. you know

  1047. a stripe

  1048. down the

  1049. centre of

  1050. the road

  1051. in the middle

  1052. of the road

  1053. and on

  1054. his first

  1055. day at

  1056. work he

  1057. paints two

  1058. miles of

  1059. a white

  1060. straight line

  1061. down the

  1062. road

  1063. everyone's

  1064. amazed

  1065. boss can't

  1066. believe it

  1067. no one's

  1068. ever painted

  1069. so much

  1070. before

  1071. on the

  1072. second day's

  1073. production

  1074. dropped to

  1075. one and a

  1076. half miles

  1077. which is

  1078. still far

  1079. above average

  1080. on the

  1081. third day

  1082. and fourth

  1083. day it was

  1084. only one

  1085. mile

  1086. and then

  1087. half a

  1088. mile

  1089. and apparently

  1090. his boss

  1091. went to him

  1092. and asked

  1093. why is it

  1094. that your

  1095. production

  1096. painting this

  1097. line across

  1098. the centre

  1099. of the road

  1100. has fallen

  1101. off so

  1102. sharply

  1103. and he said

  1104. well I'm

  1105. just getting

  1106. so far

  1107. from the

  1108. bucket

  1109. that's the

  1110. trouble with

  1111. our society

  1112. isn't it

  1113. we have

  1114. drifted far

  1115. from our

  1116. roots

  1117. people want

  1118. Christian values

  1119. but they do

  1120. not want

  1121. Jesus Christ

  1122. well the

  1123. truth is

  1124. you can't

  1125. have Christian

  1126. values without

  1127. Jesus Christ

  1128. we want a

  1129. kind of

  1130. Judeo-Christian

  1131. ethic

  1132. but you

  1133. won't have

  1134. that

  1135. if we just

  1136. teach Christian

  1137. ethics

  1138. all that is

  1139. moralism

  1140. and it will

  1141. just make

  1142. little Pharisees

  1143. people need

  1144. Jesus Christ

  1145. that's all

  1146. people need

  1147. to hear

  1148. and the

  1149. great truth

  1150. for us

  1151. is this

  1152. isn't it

  1153. that Jesus

  1154. Christ

  1155. does not

  1156. pass this

  1157. cell by

  1158. date

  1159. and he

  1160. never will

  1161. he will

  1162. never be

  1163. superseded

  1164. he will

  1165. never be

  1166. replaced

  1167. kingdoms

  1168. will come

  1169. kingdoms

  1170. will go

  1171. empires

  1172. will rise

  1173. and empires

  1174. will fall

  1175. whole

  1176. civilizations

  1177. will disappear

  1178. but Jesus

  1179. Christ

  1180. is the same

  1181. yesterday

  1182. today

  1183. and forever

  1184. and I've

  1185. told you

  1186. the story

  1187. of Lord

  1188. Reith

  1189. the first

  1190. managing

  1191. director

  1192. of the

  1193. BBC

  1194. he walks

  1195. into a

  1196. director's

  1197. meeting

  1198. and they're

  1199. all talking

  1200. and it

  1201. goes

  1202. silent

  1203. you know

  1204. it's

  1205. like when

  1206. the boss

  1207. comes into

  1208. the office

  1209. it goes

  1210. silence

  1211. Lord

  1212. Reith

  1213. was a

  1214. huge

  1215. man

  1216. he said

  1217. what were

  1218. you talking

  1219. about

  1220. directors

  1221. of the BBC

  1222. wouldn't tell

  1223. him

  1224. so he

  1225. thundered

  1226. put his

  1227. fist on

  1228. the desk

  1229. what do you

  1230. talk about

  1231. and they

  1232. said we're

  1233. planning a

  1234. programme for

  1235. the funeral

  1236. of the church

  1237. we want to

  1238. plan a programme

  1239. on the funeral

  1240. of the church

  1241. of Jesus

  1242. Christ

  1243. and Lord

  1244. Reith

  1245. thunders

  1246. the church

  1247. of Jesus

  1248. Christ

  1249. will stand

  1250. at the

  1251. graveside

  1252. of the BBC

  1253. because Jesus

  1254. Christ is

  1255. the same

  1256. yesterday

  1257. today

  1258. and forever

  1259. Spurgeon

  1260. said there

  1261. is the same

  1262. water in

  1263. the well

  1264. still

  1265. and if

  1266. we've

  1267. not drawn

  1268. it it's

  1269. our own

  1270. fault

  1271. we've

  1272. come away

  1273. from the

  1274. fire

  1275. and that

  1276. is why

  1277. we're

  1278. cold

  1279. let's

  1280. return

  1281. to him

  1282. and he

  1283. will receive

  1284. us

  1285. gladly

  1286. as gladly

  1287. and as

  1288. warmly

  1289. as he

  1290. did when

  1291. we first

  1292. believe

  1293. why are

  1294. there so

  1295. many ups

  1296. and downs

  1297. in your

  1298. Christian

  1299. life

  1300. yesterday

  1301. you could

  1302. pray

  1303. but today

  1304. you can't

  1305. today

  1306. you might

  1307. know a

  1308. measure of

  1309. victory over

  1310. temptations

  1311. but tomorrow

  1312. you may be

  1313. overwhelmed

  1314. with them

  1315. because we've

  1316. taken our

  1317. eyes off

  1318. Jesus

  1319. we've

  1320. turned

  1321. away to

  1322. men and

  1323. movements and

  1324. books and

  1325. programmes

  1326. but it's

  1327. Jesus we

  1328. need

  1329. not another

  1330. book about

  1331. him but

  1332. the living

  1333. Christ who's

  1334. always the

  1335. same

  1336. yesterday

  1337. today

  1338. and forever

  1339. and here

  1340. is solid

  1341. ground

  1342. isn't it

  1343. when all

  1344. around is

  1345. sinking sand

  1346. on Christ

  1347. the solid

  1348. rock

  1349. I stand

  1350. remember your

  1351. leaders who

  1352. spoke to you

  1353. the word of

  1354. God

  1355. consider the

  1356. outcome of

  1357. their way of

  1358. life and

  1359. imitate their

  1360. faith

  1361. Jesus Christ

  1362. is the

  1363. same

  1364. yesterday

  1365. and today

  1366. and forever

  1367. let's pray
