  1. This morning we're going to be thinking about a victory.

  2. We love victories, don't we? Whether they're sports,

  3. ! Particularly some of us, whether they're in the family home,

  4. there's always one of us who can get a little bit overcompetitive.

  5. You know who you are. We love to win.

  6. And victories also make for great films, don't they?

  7. Whether battle films, superhero films,

  8. we love to see the enemy defeated, the hero succeed.

  9. A favourite film of mine is Gladiator.

  10. I don't know if you've seen it. Fantastic film.

  11. It's about this retired Roman general called Maximus.

  12. And will he succeed? He's been enslaved.

  13. He's become a gladiator.

  14. And will he succeed against the twisted and useless Roman emperor Commodus?

  15. And the ending is a moving and great victory.

  16. I won't give it away, but some of the final lines of this,

  17. he was a soldier of Rome.

  18. Honor him.

  19. It's great, isn't it? We love a victory.

  20. And today we see a great victory.

  21. We see one of the greatest ever in history.

  22. And from a human perspective,

  23. it is a political victory on,

  24. not far off equaling the Goths sacking Rome,

  25. but this time it's the Israelites sacking the mighty Egyptians.

  26. And as we said last week,

  27. the Israelites have been enslaved by the Egyptians.

  28. Pharaoh was king.

  29. He was utterly supreme,

  30. ruling over this great empire.

  31. And he was a man who defied God.

  32. But God will bring his people out.

  33. He will rescue them.

  34. He employed sanctions, as we saw last week,

  35. and he employed the ultimate one.

  36. We see that in verse 29,

  37. at the beginning of what was read,

  38. that the Lord struck down the firstborn.

  39. And if you were here last week,

  40. I spoke about that Passover lamb

  41. that rescued the people of Israel

  42. from being struck down.

  43. How God provided a rescue.

  44. But today we're going to think about

  45. what happens next.

  46. And the first thing I want us to see is this.

  47. God's victory is a decisive defeat.

  48. God's victory is a decisive defeat.

  49. Pharaoh, the great king,

  50. the king who's hardened himself against God,

  51. who's treated God's people so badly,

  52. who is so majestic,

  53. well, we see here his utter defeat.

  54. It's a rout.

  55. It's a whitewashing.

  56. It's a complete annihilation of him.

  57. And you'll just see it just stacked up.

  58. Firstly, we see him in an utter state of panic.

  59. If you notice that in verse 31,

  60. he summons Moses and Pharaoh by night.

  61. He's in such a hurry to get them out of here.

  62. And we see it all the more in what he says.

  63. He goes, up, go, all of you, go.

  64. Take everything, be gone.

  65. It's get out.

  66. Make sure it's all of you.

  67. The victory is stark.

  68. God takes all his people.

  69. And Pharaoh completely loses his slaves.

  70. But notice what he says next.

  71. He says, verse 32,

  72. take your flocks and your herds.

  73. Now, previous to this,

  74. Pharaoh had been making all the stipulations.

  75. He had said, you can go,

  76. but leave your flocks and herds.

  77. But now he's saying,

  78. take everything.

  79. You win.

  80. God's victory is a decisive defeat.

  81. God takes all his possessions.

  82. And Pharaoh loses it.

  83. And I don't know if you noticed it,

  84. but there's a huge comment in what he says at the end.

  85. What Pharaoh says at the end.

  86. He says,

  87. and bless me also.

  88. That the king of Egypt is asking for a blessing.

  89. This is an extraordinary comment.

  90. This is like Stephen Hawking's

  91. asking for some help with some physics.

  92. This is a moment of utter humiliation for Pharaoh.

  93. Pharaoh knows he's in the presence of a far greater power.

  94. He knows he's been surely beaten

  95. by a God far greater than he.

  96. God's victory is a decisive defeat.

  97. God is the one who blesses.

  98. And Pharaoh is humiliated.

  99. And then it keeps going.

  100. Then as the people leave,

  101. not only do they take their own livestock,

  102. if you haven't noticed at verse 35 and 36,

  103. they take all the silver and gold and clothing.

  104. They take the wealth of Egypt too.

  105. They utterly plunder the Egyptians.

  106. God takes all the riches.

  107. And Pharaoh is plundered.

  108. And not only riches,

  109. do you notice in verse 38,

  110. it says it's a mixed multitude.

  111. Not only Israelites,

  112. but Egyptians have left as well.

  113. People are flocking out of Egypt,

  114. like refugees seeking a better home.

  115. God takes people,

  116. and Pharaoh's nation is plundered.

  117. God's victory is a decisive defeat.

  118. Now before this moment,

  119. Pharaoh probably thought he had a bit of a chance.

  120. Probably thought actually the result's going to be close.

  121. A bit like a famous football match.

  122. Not sure if you're a football fan,

  123. but back in 2014,

  124. there was a World Cup semi-final

  125. that set itself up similarly.

  126. It was Brazil versus Germany.

  127. I don't know if you remember it.

  128. And Brazil probably thought,

  129. this is going to be a tight one.

  130. We've got a chance here.

  131. I think we're going to win it.

  132. Do you remember the score?

  133. It was 7-1 to Germany.

  134. 7-1.

  135. It was an utter destruction,

  136. a total victory.

  137. Brazil had no chance.

  138. Pharaoh thought he had a chance.

  139. But God's victory was decisive.

  140. Not even a contest.

  141. And because it was a decisive defeat,

  142. we also see that God's victory

  143. is a rich rescue.

  144. It is a rich rescue.

  145. Firstly,

  146. it is a rescue of a huge number of people.

  147. Do you notice the size?

  148. It's a vast group of people.

  149. Over 600,000.

  150. That's just the men.

  151. It could be up to about 2 million.

  152. We're not sure.

  153. But even at this lowest estimate,

  154. that's the population bigger

  155. than the whole of Luxembourg moving out.

  156. And just think of their experience.

  157. A few hundred years before,

  158. 66 people turned up.

  159. And now look where we are.

  160. It is a great nation.

  161. It's even got Egyptians joining them.

  162. And it's not only a change of size,

  163. but it's a change of fortune.

  164. A few chapters later,

  165. these guys were facing extreme slavery

  166. and persecution.

  167. Their children were being murdered.

  168. They were being beaten.

  169. They're being worked harder than ever.

  170. And here they are,

  171. leaving into freedom.

  172. Rich beyond their wildest dreams.

  173. Laden with silver, gold,

  174. fired clothing,

  175. huge flocks of sheeps and goats.

  176. This is the ultimate rags to riches.

  177. It's a bit like that film,

  178. I don't know if you know,

  179. Slumdog Millionaire.

  180. It's one of the great rags to riches films.

  181. The main guy, Jamal,

  182. he grows up in horrendous poverty,

  183. living in the slums of Bombay.

  184. He's an orphan,

  185. has to beg to live.

  186. And he makes his way slowly.

  187. He becomes a chaiwala,

  188. a tea boy in a call centre.

  189. And it's,

  190. will he be rich beyond his wildest dreams

  191. with a girl he has loved forever?

  192. Will it be a Slumdog to Millionaire moment?

  193. And that is a picture,

  194. Slumdog to Millionaire is a picture

  195. of what happens to these Israelites.

  196. God takes his people from slaves to superstars,

  197. from victim to VIP.

  198. God's victory is a rich rescue.

  199. And it's so clear, isn't it,

  200. that this victory is God's victory.

  201. He's the one doing it.

  202. Did you notice,

  203. he's the one who brought the judgment in verse 29.

  204. He's the one who gives the people favour in verse 36.

  205. And for him,

  206. all this was just a night of watching.

  207. Do you notice that in verse 42?

  208. It was a night of watching by the Lord

  209. to bring them out of the land of Egypt.

  210. In a sense,

  211. this is not like Germany versus Brazil.

  212. This is more like Germany playing

  213. your local Saturday league team.

  214. He didn't even break a sweat.

  215. It was a decisive defeat

  216. and a rich rescue.

  217. Now the victory of God over Egypt,

  218. the rescue of his people,

  219. is taken by the Bible as a great picture

  220. of God's victory and rescue

  221. through Jesus Christ.

  222. Jesus himself talks about

  223. how he's tied up the strong man

  224. so he can plunder his belongings.

  225. Just like the defeat of Pharaoh,

  226. Jesus said he's tied up the devil.

  227. He's tied up the powers of evil in this world

  228. and is plundering him,

  229. particularly of people.

  230. And Jesus Christ's death and resurrection

  231. is that great moment of victory.

  232. Paul in Colossians says this,

  233. he says,

  234. he disarmed the rulers and authorities

  235. and put them to open shame

  236. by triumphing over them in him.

  237. How did he disarm all these powers,

  238. all the powers of the world?

  239. Well, in many ways,

  240. but one was by defeating death itself.

  241. Death, we know,

  242. is a great weapon against people,

  243. isn't it?

  244. We fear it.

  245. It ultimately,

  246. it rips apart our relationships.

  247. It's threatened by tyrants and rulers.

  248. And by defeating death,

  249. but by taking on sin,

  250. as Jesus Christ died,

  251. by rising again,

  252. showing that death had no power on him,

  253. Jesus completely took away death's power.

  254. As Paul says in 1 Corinthians,

  255. quoting Isaiah,

  256. he says,

  257. death is swallowed up in victory.

  258. The world has no power anymore.

  259. Death is no longer a threat.

  260. Although we know death breaks relationships awfully,

  261. a Christian can face it confidently.

  262. We know there is a resurrection,

  263. that there is eternal life.

  264. Christ's victory is a decisive defeat.

  265. Through a seemingly small act,

  266. 2,000 years ago,

  267. on a hillside of a backwater of the Roman Empire,

  268. God had utter victory.

  269. And this means his victory is also a rich rescue.

  270. He rescues a huge group of people.

  271. The Church of Jesus Christ spans thousands of years.

  272. It spans every tribe, nation and tongue,

  273. from China to Brazil,

  274. from India to Iran.

  275. God is rescuing many,

  276. thousands,

  277. millions.

  278. And the secular world and other religions

  279. just shake their fist

  280. that they will not win.

  281. Just need to look at a country like Iran.

  282. Right under the Ayatollah's nose,

  283. the Church of Jesus Christ

  284. grows faster than any other place in the world.

  285. And it is a nation given great riches.

  286. God lavishes blessings on his people.

  287. In Ephesians 1,

  288. Paul outlines many of these riches

  289. that Christ has won.

  290. I'm not going to read it now,

  291. but I will pick out snapshots.

  292. Do go and read it later.

  293. Ephesians 1.

  294. But in it,

  295. Paul says that we have every spiritual blessing.

  296. We have been adopted as sons.

  297. We have been blessed in Christ.

  298. We have redemption.

  299. We have forgiveness of sins.

  300. We've been lavished with grace.

  301. We have God's spirit in us.

  302. And we wait for an inheritance to come.

  303. Right now,

  304. the Church of Jesus Christ

  305. has incredible spiritual blessings.

  306. Now you may notice

  307. many of these blessings are unseen.

  308. But even unseen to the Christian,

  309. they are very real.

  310. To know forgiveness

  311. is something many in our world yearn for.

  312. Without it,

  313. we know people have regrets,

  314. have sorrow,

  315. and yet Christians are given it

  316. by Jesus Christ.

  317. To know we have a loving,

  318. heavenly Father

  319. being adopted into his family

  320. reaches deep into our lives,

  321. especially those who don't know

  322. parental love,

  323. who lack security,

  324. company,

  325. and yet Christians are given it.

  326. To know the hope of eternal life

  327. when so many face despair,

  328. suicide,

  329. and yet Christians are given it.

  330. Unseen,

  331. but very real.

  332. And the unseen

  333. will be clearly seen

  334. in the future

  335. when Christ returns.

  336. There is an inheritance

  337. to come,

  338. Paul says.

  339. When Christ returns,

  340. we will inherit

  341. all that he has won for us.

  342. Eternal joy,

  343. sorry,

  344. eternal life,

  345. unspeakable joy.

  346. God's victory in Christ

  347. is a rich rescue.

  348. What a generous God we have.

  349. We are utterly undeserving,

  350. and yet God has decided

  351. to lavish his blessings

  352. on his people.

  353. So how do we respond

  354. to this God?

  355. This God who's victorious

  356. and gracious?

  357. Well, this passage

  358. presents to us

  359. two options,

  360. two responses,

  361. in a sense,

  362. two types of fear.

  363. It shows us one type

  364. and leaves us feeling another.

  365. Firstly,

  366. it shows us

  367. the fear of Pharaoh

  368. and the Egyptians.

  369. It's a fear

  370. that results in

  371. running away

  372. from blessing.

  373. Pharaoh says,

  374. up, go,

  375. be gone.

  376. The people of Egypt

  377. are urgent.

  378. Get them out of here.

  379. They want the riches,

  380. the victory of God

  381. to be as far away

  382. from them as possible.

  383. They want God

  384. at a distance.

  385. They want Christians

  386. to be at a distance.

  387. And perhaps

  388. you identify with that.

  389. Perhaps you hear about God

  390. and actually

  391. you just don't want

  392. anything to do with it.

  393. You perhaps come here

  394. a few times

  395. and you just want to

  396. keep it at arm's length.

  397. A bit like a friend's

  398. Rottweiler.

  399. A mean looking dog.

  400. Nice for you,

  401. but keep it at a distance.

  402. Okay?

  403. But please,

  404. I urge you,

  405. notice that

  406. Christ's victory

  407. is total.

  408. This is true

  409. as implications

  410. for all of us

  411. whether we believe it

  412. or not.

  413. And in this victory,

  414. which side

  415. will you be on?

  416. The victors

  417. or those defeated?

  418. Worshipping

  419. Jesus Christ

  420. on his throne

  421. or his enemy

  422. under his judgment?

  423. please don't be

  424. like Pharaoh

  425. who knew his defeat

  426. but ran away

  427. from blessing.

  428. Because there's a second

  429. type of fear.

  430. It's not shown

  431. explicitly in this passage

  432. but it's the one

  433. the passage

  434. leaves us with.

  435. Instead of a fear

  436. that leads us

  437. to running away,

  438. it's a fear

  439. that leads us

  440. to going and serving

  441. the Lord.

  442. Lord,

  443. this passage

  444. should leave us

  445. in a wonder

  446. and fear

  447. of this powerful

  448. Lord.

  449. It is a colossal

  450. victory.

  451. No one can mess

  452. with him.

  453. In our world

  454. no one will beat him.

  455. Political rulers,

  456. spiritual rulers,

  457. they've lost their power.

  458. Not even death

  459. can defeat God

  460. and his purposes.

  461. He is truly

  462. almighty.

  463. Pharaoh,

  464. empires,

  465. philosophies,

  466. religions

  467. will all fade

  468. but God is.

  469. He is always the same.

  470. Mighty,

  471. victorious,

  472. lavishing grace

  473. on his people.

  474. What we see

  475. of God here

  476. is very helpfully

  477. put in a famous quote

  478. from The Lion,

  479. the Witch and the Wardrobe

  480. a book by C.S. Lewis.

  481. It's for children

  482. but it is very profound.

  483. A character

  484. called Mr. Beaver

  485. is talking to a girl

  486. called Susan

  487. about Aslan

  488. who is in a sense

  489. the God's character

  490. and Mr. Beaver

  491. says this,

  492. he says,

  493. Aslan is a lion.

  494. The lion,

  495. the great lion.

  496. Ooh,

  497. said Susan.

  498. I thought he was a man.

  499. Is he quite safe?

  500. I shall feel rather nervous

  501. about meeting a lion.

  502. Safe,

  503. said Mr. Beaver.

  504. Who said anything

  505. about safe?

  506. Of course he isn't safe

  507. but he's good.

  508. He's the king

  509. I tell you.

  510. Our Lord isn't safe

  511. but he's victorious

  512. and he is good

  513. and knowing that

  514. leads us towards him.

  515. The Lord is the great

  516. and good king

  517. who lavishes blessing.

  518. The people of Israel

  519. were not leaving Egypt

  520. to run away.

  521. They were heading

  522. to Mount Sinai

  523. to worship him.

  524. We fear the Lord

  525. in a way that means

  526. we come to worship him

  527. like bees to a honeypot,

  528. like flies to a light.

  529. As we see God like this,

  530. this victorious,

  531. this good saviour,

  532. then our hearts

  533. are drawn to him

  534. and we come in reverence

  535. and we come in fear.

  536. That is the right response.

  537. You know,

  538. we never waltz up

  539. to the Queen Elizabeth

  540. would we and go,

  541. alright Lizzie,

  542. how's tricks

  543. and slap her on the back.

  544. And nor would we,

  545. and should we treat God similarly.

  546. Like a,

  547. we shouldn't treat him

  548. like a lucky charm

  549. that we pray to

  550. when we just need help.

  551. Or like a mate

  552. down the pub.

  553. No,

  554. he is the great

  555. and victorious God.

  556. But we do come to him.

  557. We do come to him.

  558. His greatness

  559. is worthy of our worship.

  560. As we see the world's efforts

  561. fade.

  562. Fads,

  563. they come and go,

  564. don't they?

  565. Political heroes

  566. disappear.

  567. Celebrities

  568. fade.

  569. Technologies

  570. get superseded.

  571. Jobs

  572. finish.

  573. Wealth

  574. will rot.

  575. Even our family

  576. eventually dies

  577. and leaves us.

  578. But our God

  579. does not fade.

  580. The only person

  581. worthy of our

  582. heart's desires,

  583. worships and longings

  584. is God himself,

  585. the Lord.

  586. And if God's word

  587. has brought that

  588. response in you,

  589. perhaps this week

  590. spend time

  591. in praise.

  592. Get to church

  593. on Sunday.

  594. Pray on your own

  595. and recognise

  596. all his worth.
