  1. Oh well, hello and welcome. It's a real honour and a privilege to be here. My name is Adam Kersis.

  2. I'm afraid I was actually introduced slightly wrong because I'm not from Tunbridge Wells, I'm from Royal Tunbridge Wells.

  3. ! So we've got to get that right. Please do keep your Bibles open as we'll be referring to it throughout the talk.

  4. But to start us off, let's just have a bit of poetry from Dylan Thomas.

  5. Do not go gentle into that good night. Old age should burn and rave at close of day. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  6. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, because their words had fought no lightning day.

  7. Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last way by, crying how bright.

  8. Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  9. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight and learned too late.

  10. They grieved on its way. They grieved on its way. Do not go gentle into that good night.

  11. Grave men near death who see with blinding sight. Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay.

  12. Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height.

  13. Curse, bless me now with fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night.

  14. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

  15. Oh, those are some beautiful words from Dylan Thomas, aren't they?

  16. And to my shame, I have to admit, I only actually know them because of the film Interstellar.

  17. A call to rage against the dying of the light.

  18. To fight for every breath, every moment.

  19. Because once it's all over, then off we go into that eternal night.

  20. Do you feel that thing called upon you?

  21. To not waste a second.

  22. Because soon, it will all be over and done, this thing we call life.

  23. Is this all life is?

  24. A moment? A blip?

  25. Is that all we can expect?

  26. Is that all we can hope for?

  27. John writes his entire letter, spiralling in on this topic of life.

  28. And he claims that if we recognise that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and believe it,

  29. then we can have life in his name.

  30. A life that will last for longer than a moment, than a blip.

  31. A life that will have purpose, and joy, and satisfaction.

  32. And right here, right at the beginning of John's letter,

  33. he focuses in on a false religion that will rob you of life.

  34. And he gives you a glimpse of a radical relationship that will give life to you.

  35. And he does this in two points.

  36. Firstly, a false religion turns a temple into a marketplace.

  37. So, a false religion turns a temple into a marketplace.

  38. So, Jesus lived in the first century Israel.

  39. And John's letter tells us of a time when Jesus was celebrating the Passover.

  40. The Passover was this great feast,

  41. remembering when the Jews were saved from Egypt.

  42. A divine rescue.

  43. And if you were a first century Jew,

  44. then there is one place that you want to be during the Passover.

  45. You want to be in Jerusalem.

  46. And if you're in Jerusalem,

  47. then there's one place you definitely want to be,

  48. if you're there during the Passover.

  49. You want to be in the temple.

  50. The temple, that's the place to be during the Passover.

  51. The temple, it represents the very heart of the Jewish faith.

  52. The Jerusalem temple was the Mecca for the first century Jews.

  53. At the temple, people could come,

  54. and they could meet with God.

  55. But at the temple, God's physical location was symbolically found.

  56. At the temple, sacrifices for sin could be made.

  57. At the temple, that's where it's all going down.

  58. Now, the temple, it worked a little bit like an onion,

  59. or if you like Shrek, like an ogre.

  60. It had layers.

  61. That first layer,

  62. now that layer was the furthest any Gentiles,

  63. so non-ethically Jewish people,

  64. could come into.

  65. Then the next layer was the furthest any Jewish women could come.

  66. And then the next layer,

  67. and then the next layer,

  68. the furthest the Jewish men could come.

  69. Until finally you hit a barrier.

  70. A barrier which only the high priest could pass.

  71. And in this outer limit,

  72. in this outer courtyard,

  73. this layer,

  74. the courtyard of the Gentiles,

  75. this is where our verses,

  76. our story is set.

  77. So please sit down with me again,

  78. verse 13.

  79. The Passover of the Jews was at hand,

  80. and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  81. In the temple he found those

  82. who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeon,

  83. and the money changers sitting there.

  84. Now, it's not particularly unusual

  85. for you to get money changers

  86. near the temple.

  87. Because there's a certain type of currency

  88. which they would have used in Jerusalem,

  89. and that the temple would have been using.

  90. And actually people who travel far away

  91. just wouldn't really have had that,

  92. that sort of money.

  93. So you need money changers.

  94. Again, it's not particularly unusual

  95. for you to get people selling oxen

  96. and sheep and pigeons

  97. near the temple.

  98. Because again,

  99. if you've travelled from Spain

  100. or from Italy

  101. to get to this famous temple

  102. in Jerusalem,

  103. you're probably not going to bring along

  104. an oxen with you

  105. that would just slow you down

  106. and make it a costly venture.

  107. However, what was unusual

  108. was to have them in the temple itself,

  109. in the very court of the Gentiles,

  110. its outer layer.

  111. Because how could the Gentiles

  112. come and meet with God?

  113. Come and offer their sacrifices for sin?

  114. If all around them is this noise

  115. and this hubbub

  116. and the shouting

  117. and the bleating

  118. and the selling

  119. and the bartering

  120. and the mooing

  121. and the smell

  122. and the stench

  123. of a busy, thriving,

  124. dirty marketplace.

  125. And Jesus,

  126. he's not happy about this.

  127. He's not happy about it at all.

  128. Let's continue reading.

  129. Verse 15.

  130. And this is Jesus here.

  131. And making a whip of cords,

  132. he drove them all out of the temple

  133. with the sheep and the oxen.

  134. And he poured out the coins

  135. of the money changers

  136. and overturned their tables.

  137. And he told those

  138. who sold the pigeons,

  139. you can imagine,

  140. he would have said this

  141. pretty loudly,

  142. take these things away.

  143. Do not make my father's house

  144. a house of trade.

  145. His disciples remembered

  146. that it was written,

  147. zeal for your house

  148. will consume me.

  149. This is a highly charged,

  150. like emotional response

  151. to the temple becoming

  152. a marketplace.

  153. And it caused,

  154. it caused the disciples

  155. to remember from Psalm 69,

  156. zeal for your house

  157. will consume me.

  158. Jesus, he's consumed

  159. from his father's house.

  160. This is,

  161. this is God's house,

  162. his home.

  163. This is where God

  164. should be honoured,

  165. where he should be worshipped,

  166. where he should be praised.

  167. This is where people

  168. from all over the world

  169. can come in reverence

  170. and awe and fear

  171. and meet with God.

  172. This should be a place

  173. of prayer and petition.

  174. This should be a place

  175. where people can

  176. acknowledge their sin

  177. and offer up to that sacrifice.

  178. This house,

  179. it is so important,

  180. it is too important

  181. for Jesus not to act.

  182. He is filled

  183. with this emotional zeal

  184. to drive out all those

  185. who would rob

  186. his father's house

  187. of its true purpose.

  188. Jesus is not

  189. weak and mild.

  190. He is consumed

  191. with zeal

  192. for his father's house

  193. because it matters,

  194. because it's important,

  195. because these market traders

  196. and these money lenders

  197. and the priests

  198. who put them there

  199. in the first place,

  200. they are peddling

  201. a false religion.

  202. A religion that cares

  203. more about profit

  204. than it does about faith.

  205. A religion that cares

  206. more about money

  207. than it does

  208. about atoning sacrifice.

  209. A religion that cares

  210. more about consumers

  211. than it does

  212. about the king

  213. of the entire universe

  214. having a relationship

  215. with his people.

  216. Jesus,

  217. he wants nothing to do

  218. with this fake religion,

  219. with this false religion.

  220. Jesus,

  221. he wants this religion

  222. out,

  223. gone.

  224. If you fill a diesel car

  225. with petrol,

  226. it's not going to go anywhere

  227. because that's not its purpose.

  228. And if you fill a temple

  229. with a market,

  230. then it's not going to achieve

  231. its purpose either.

  232. What do you do

  233. with a diesel car

  234. fueled with petrol?

  235. You drain it.

  236. And what do you do

  237. with a temple

  238. filled with a marketplace?

  239. You drive it out.

  240. False religion

  241. turns the temple

  242. into a marketplace.

  243. False religion

  244. needs to be driven out.

  245. The Jews put the market

  246. over the temple,

  247. the money over the magnificent,

  248. the immediate

  249. over the mattress.

  250. They were so focused

  251. on what was right

  252. in front of them

  253. that they lost sight

  254. of the most amazing thing

  255. of all.

  256. Meeting with God.

  257. They were peddlers

  258. of a false religion.

  259. And we've got to ask

  260. the question,

  261. are we peddlers

  262. of a false religion?

  263. Do we get distracted

  264. by the immediate,

  265. by the things

  266. that are right in front of us,

  267. that we can feel

  268. and that we can touch

  269. and that we can see,

  270. that actually we forget

  271. that we were made

  272. to know our maker.

  273. We were made as humans

  274. to know God.

  275. We were made as humans

  276. to meet with God.

  277. Do we squander

  278. our chance

  279. to experience

  280. the magnificent,

  281. the miraculous?

  282. Do we squander

  283. our chance

  284. to meet with God?

  285. Because we're so focused

  286. on the now,

  287. on the immediate,

  288. on the things

  289. which are right

  290. in front of our eyes.

  291. It's a false religion

  292. when a temple

  293. becomes a marketplace.

  294. Jesus burned

  295. with zeal against it

  296. and he will burn

  297. with zeal

  298. against any similar

  299. attitudes now.

  300. Have you noticed

  301. what this also tells us

  302. about Jesus?

  303. Jesus, he's no man.

  304. Jesus is no simple

  305. human being.

  306. Jesus, he's like you

  307. and he's like me

  308. but he's also totally

  309. different to you and me.

  310. Jesus is the Son of God

  311. and thus he cares

  312. passionately,

  313. passionately,

  314. frantically,

  315. zealously

  316. for his Father's house.

  317. So do we realise

  318. who this is,

  319. who John is telling us about?

  320. Do you realise

  321. that the very consequences

  322. of these words

  323. God became a man

  324. and now the world

  325. has changed.

  326. So false religion,

  327. it turns the temple

  328. into a marketplace.

  329. But God didn't come

  330. to earth as a man

  331. just to tell us

  332. what was wrong

  333. but to start

  334. a radical relationship.

  335. So that's my second point.

  336. The second point

  337. John makes here.

  338. The way to a radical

  339. relationship

  340. is through Jesus

  341. the temple.

  342. The way to a radical

  343. relationship

  344. is through Jesus

  345. the temple.

  346. So let's look down

  347. at verse 18.

  348. So the Jews

  349. said to him,

  350. what sign do you

  351. show us

  352. for doing these things?

  353. Now,

  354. it's already

  355. interesting though,

  356. isn't it?

  357. Like,

  358. they're not

  359. challenging him

  360. ethically.

  361. Why do you send

  362. these market traders

  363. away?

  364. Like,

  365. supposing it's

  366. morally wrong.

  367. No,

  368. they challenge

  369. his authority

  370. to do such a thing.

  371. They want to see

  372. a sign.

  373. It's like they

  374. already know

  375. that actually

  376. what they are doing

  377. is wrong.

  378. So they try

  379. to change the subject

  380. away from the action

  381. and onto his authority.

  382. Let's continue reading,

  383. continue looking down.

  384. Verse 19.

  385. Jesus answered them,

  386. destroy this temple

  387. and in three days

  388. I will raise it up.

  389. The Jews then said,

  390. it has taken 46 years

  391. to build this temple

  392. and you will raise it up

  393. in three days.

  394. So the Jews then

  395. didn't get it.

  396. They think,

  397. Jesus,

  398. he's just a little bit crazy.

  399. It took them 46 years

  400. thank you very much

  401. to build this temple

  402. and this Jesus guy

  403. thinks he's going to

  404. destroy it

  405. and then raise it

  406. in three days.

  407. That's just rubbish

  408. to them.

  409. That's just

  410. inconceivable.

  411. Let's continue reading,

  412. verse 21.

  413. But he was speaking

  414. about the temple

  415. of his body.

  416. When therefore

  417. he was raised

  418. from the dead,

  419. his disciples remembered

  420. that he had said this

  421. and then believed

  422. the scriptures

  423. and the word

  424. that Jesus had spoken.

  425. These verses,

  426. they're absolutely huge.

  427. They're absolutely massive

  428. because Jesus,

  429. he is claiming

  430. to be the temple.

  431. Jesus is claiming

  432. to be the temple.

  433. See,

  434. it'll be a little bit

  435. like me maybe today

  436. coming up here

  437. and telling all of you,

  438. see,

  439. I want you to forget

  440. everything that you've

  441. ever learnt about rugby

  442. because actually

  443. everything you think

  444. you know about rugby

  445. you sort of got it wrong.

  446. It'll be a bit like

  447. me coming up here today

  448. and saying actually,

  449. actually you've got to

  450. understand,

  451. me,

  452. Adam Curtis,

  453. I am Wembley Stadium.

  454. It's in me

  455. that you get the excitement,

  456. that you get the thrill

  457. and the energy.

  458. It's in me

  459. that you get to come

  460. and watch

  461. and see beautiful rugby

  462. hopefully take place.

  463. It's in me

  464. that rugby is fulfilled

  465. and understood

  466. and seen.

  467. Now if I came up

  468. and did that today

  469. and said these things

  470. that I am Wembley Stadium

  471. and you've got to see it

  472. through me,

  473. then there's probably

  474. only two ways

  475. really to react.

  476. Firstly,

  477. I think you'd be like,

  478. this man is crazy.

  479. This man is literally

  480. out of his mind.

  481. This is ridiculous.

  482. Or probably the only

  483. other option,

  484. if you weren't going

  485. to take that one,

  486. is you'd have to

  487. then believe what I said.

  488. So you are going to

  489. assume I'm crazy

  490. or you've got to

  491. believe what I said.

  492. So this is what

  493. Jesus is doing here.

  494. He's saying something

  495. equally as radical

  496. or more radical.

  497. The Jews,

  498. they put so much

  499. religious significance

  500. into the temple.

  501. It's so important to them.

  502. It's where they meet God.

  503. It's where they offer

  504. their sacrifices to him.

  505. And Jesus is saying

  506. that his body

  507. is now the temple.

  508. All this religious

  509. significance

  510. can now be found

  511. in his body.

  512. It is found

  513. in Jesus.

  514. Once you used to

  515. find God in the temple,

  516. now you find God

  517. in Jesus.

  518. Once you used to

  519. meet God in the temple,

  520. now you meet God

  521. in Jesus.

  522. Once you used to

  523. offer sacrifices

  524. to God in a temple,

  525. now you offer them

  526. in Jesus.

  527. Jesus is the temple.

  528. And because Jesus

  529. is the temple,

  530. we no longer need

  531. to go to a geographical

  532. location to meet God.

  533. Because Jesus

  534. is the temple,

  535. we can now have

  536. a radical relationship

  537. with God.

  538. We can find God

  539. in Jesus.

  540. We can meet God

  541. in Jesus.

  542. We can offer

  543. a sacrifice

  544. to God

  545. in Jesus.

  546. But the disciples

  547. only understood

  548. the significance

  549. of Jesus' work

  550. that he is this temple.

  551. Once they'd actually

  552. seen him rise

  553. from the dead,

  554. as we saw

  555. in verse 22,

  556. only then did they

  557. see how Jesus

  558. was the temple

  559. that was destroyed

  560. when he was nailed

  561. to a cross

  562. and then rebuilt

  563. when he rose

  564. from the dead

  565. after three days.

  566. It's important

  567. to note that

  568. this is why

  569. Jesus had the

  570. authority to clear

  571. that temple

  572. in the first place.

  573. Remember the question

  574. the Jews asked him

  575. in verse 18?

  576. What sign do you

  577. show us for doing

  578. these things?

  579. Well, the resurrection

  580. of Jesus,

  581. that is the sign

  582. and the proof.

  583. It's because Jesus

  584. has the power

  585. to defeat death

  586. that he has the

  587. authority to clear

  588. the temple.

  589. Jesus does not

  590. just say crazy

  591. things,

  592. I am the temple.

  593. Jesus does

  594. crazy things.

  595. He defeats death.

  596. This is why

  597. the disciples

  598. trusted him

  599. and this is why

  600. we too are able

  601. to trust him now.

  602. The way to a

  603. radical relationship

  604. with God

  605. is through Jesus,

  606. the temple.

  607. When I was a lot

  608. younger and a lot

  609. smaller,

  610. a little kid,

  611. we went on a

  612. family holiday

  613. with my cousins,

  614. my aunts,

  615. my uncles

  616. and we did

  617. loads of canoeing.

  618. Now one day

  619. my older brother,

  620. Jamie,

  621. my older sister,

  622. Becky,

  623. my older cousin,

  624. and so they

  625. wanted to canoe

  626. up the river

  627. towards the sea.

  628. So they crossed

  629. over the river

  630. in their canoe

  631. to the other side

  632. and then they

  633. started going

  634. up towards the sea.

  635. And they just

  636. went on and on

  637. and on until

  638. actually eventually

  639. they just got a bit

  640. tired and decided

  641. they wanted to

  642. turn back.

  643. But as they

  644. started to row

  645. back up the river,

  646. they started to

  647. row against the

  648. current.

  649. And it didn't

  650. matter how hard

  651. they rowed,

  652. they hardly made

  653. any distance

  654. until.

  655. Until they

  656. got to the

  657. point of

  658. just sheer

  659. exhaustion.

  660. And they had

  661. to call my

  662. mum and dad

  663. and our aunts

  664. and uncles

  665. and tell them

  666. that we're

  667. stuck.

  668. We can't

  669. get ourselves

  670. across the river

  671. to the other

  672. side,

  673. where you guys

  674. are,

  675. and we can't

  676. move any further

  677. up the river

  678. towards you either.

  679. Now I must

  680. admit at this

  681. point as a

  682. little boy,

  683. my mind is a

  684. bit fuzzy.

  685. All I remember

  686. is grown-ups

  687. chattering.

  688. And from

  689. what I've

  690. heard over

  691. the years,

  692. it would be

  693. fair to say

  694. that my

  695. parents were

  696. pretty panicked.

  697. And they

  698. ended up

  699. calling the

  700. Coast Guard.

  701. But this bit

  702. I remember

  703. with crystal

  704. clarity.

  705. My brother,

  706. my sister,

  707. my cousin,

  708. who got

  709. themselves into

  710. this stupid

  711. situation by

  712. themselves,

  713. they got

  714. airlifted by

  715. a helicopter

  716. from their

  717. side of the

  718. river,

  719. and they were

  720. brought over

  721. to our side.

  722. I was so

  723. jealous.

  724. They got

  725. rescued by

  726. a helicopter,

  727. and all I

  728. got was this

  729. dull afternoon

  730. of sitting and

  731. waiting for them

  732. to return.

  733. Outrageous!

  734. My brother,

  735. sister,

  736. and cousin,

  737. they were on

  738. one side of

  739. the river,

  740. and my family,

  741. we were on

  742. the other.

  743. And these two

  744. separate groups,

  745. they needed to

  746. become one.

  747. So they needed

  748. that helicopter.

  749. We're separated

  750. from God,

  751. and in the

  752. temple,

  753. we can meet

  754. with him.

  755. Jesus then,

  756. he's a little

  757. bit like that

  758. helicopter.

  759. Which enabled

  760. my brother,

  761. sister,

  762. and cousin,

  763. to be reunited

  764. with my family.

  765. But you know

  766. what?

  767. Jesus being

  768. in a helicopter

  769. is just a

  770. rubbish

  771. illustration.

  772. Because Jesus

  773. isn't not just

  774. a helicopter,

  775. that's not

  776. strong enough.

  777. It doesn't

  778. stay good

  779. enough.

  780. It would be a

  781. little bit more

  782. like if you

  783. had my stupid

  784. lost teenager

  785. relatives here,

  786. and my family

  787. over here,

  788. and then just

  789. the river

  790. between.

  791. And a better

  792. picture of

  793. Jesus would

  794. be him

  795. sucking all

  796. that water

  797. up,

  798. and then

  799. just spraying

  800. it away.

  801. And then

  802. the ground

  803. literally

  804. folding together

  805. until the

  806. two sides

  807. pertain

  808. one.

  809. Until they

  810. could meet.

  811. That's a

  812. truer image

  813. of what Jesus

  814. has done

  815. when he

  816. becomes the

  817. temple.

  818. Because it

  819. represents how

  820. radical this

  821. relationship is.

  822. it is world

  823. transforming.

  824. It changes

  825. everything.

  826. The other

  827. day I was in

  828. the pub,

  829. chatting to a

  830. mate of mine,

  831. and he asked

  832. me why I was

  833. a Christian.

  834. And I waffled

  835. on a bit,

  836. trying to give

  837. him a well

  838. reasoned answer.

  839. And yet this

  840. passage actually

  841. explains it

  842. perfectly and

  843. beautifully.

  844. I'm a Christian

  845. because in

  846. Jesus the

  847. temple, I have

  848. a radical

  849. relationship with

  850. God.

  851. In Jesus, I

  852. know a God

  853. who made me.

  854. who knitted

  855. me together

  856. in my

  857. mother's womb.

  858. In Jesus, I

  859. know a God

  860. who sustains

  861. me, who

  862. gives me breath

  863. for each day

  864. and energy

  865. to keep on

  866. going.

  867. In Jesus, I

  868. know a God

  869. who loves me

  870. so passionately

  871. and deeply

  872. that he would

  873. send his son

  874. to die for me

  875. on a cross.

  876. In Jesus, I

  877. know a God

  878. who gives

  879. life purpose,

  880. who gives

  881. joy in the

  882. struggle and

  883. deep satisfaction

  884. which nothing

  885. else can compare

  886. with.

  887. In Jesus, I

  888. know a God

  889. who gives

  890. me life.

  891. Not just in

  892. the past and

  893. not just in

  894. the present, but

  895. in the future

  896. too.

  897. In Jesus, I

  898. know a God

  899. who will give

  900. me life which

  901. will last

  902. forever and

  903. ever and

  904. ever and

  905. ever and

  906. ever and

  907. ever and

  908. ever and

  909. ever.

  910. Do you want

  911. to share in

  912. that life?

  913. Wonder

  914. that end?

  915. Will you

  916. come and

  917. meet Jesus?

  918. Will you

  919. come and

  920. meet with

  921. God?

  922. Will you

  923. come to

  924. Jesus'

  925. temple and

  926. will you

  927. start a

  928. radical

  929. relationship

  930. with the

  931. God who

  932. knows you

  933. better than

  934. you know

  935. yourself?

  936. Will you

  937. come and

  938. call on the

  939. name of

  940. Jesus now

  941. and tomorrow

  942. and the

  943. day after

  944. until the

  945. end of

  946. time itself?

  947. A false

  948. religion, it

  949. cares more about

  950. the immediate

  951. than the miraculous

  952. and it turns

  953. the temple

  954. into a

  955. marketplace.

  956. Jesus is

  957. having nothing

  958. to do with

  959. that because

  960. he is his

  961. father's son

  962. and he wants

  963. people to

  964. come and

  965. meet with

  966. God.

  967. Jesus offers

  968. us the chance

  969. to have a

  970. radical

  971. relationship

  972. with God

  973. by becoming

  974. the temple

  975. enabling all

  976. who call

  977. in his name

  978. to meet

  979. him.

  980. So should

  981. we rage

  982. against the

  983. dying of

  984. the lights?

  985. No!

  986. That is a

  987. waste of time,

  988. a philosophy

  989. of pointless

  990. shallow

  991. immediate

  992. obsessed

  993. life.

  994. No!

  995. We should

  996. recognise who

  997. Jesus is

  998. the Messiah

  999. and the

  1000. Son of God

  1001. and we

  1002. should call

  1003. on his

  1004. name and

  1005. know that

  1006. if we do

  1007. we will

  1008. have life

  1009. in all

  1010. its fullest

  1011. and all

  1012. its glory

  1013. now and

  1014. then for

  1015. all

  1016. eternity.

  1017. Why don't

  1018. I pray?
