  1. One of the problems is knowing where to stop, isn't it? If you do any public speaking, particularly

  2. ! a problem for preachers. Knowing where to stop. I was told once by another preacher that

  3. ! my preaching was like a plane circling the airport. That you kept thinking it was going

  4. to land, but no, you went round for another lap. Which, I took it. Knowing where to stop.

  5. It's difficult, isn't it? And I think you get to Isaiah 66, and you think, well, you get

  6. to the end of Isaiah 65, and you think, this is a great place to stop. And then, Isaiah

  7. 66 is a puzzling chapter. I remember last week, this magnificent vision of a new heavens and

  8. a new earth. It's described, isn't it? It's one of the mountain peaks of Isaiah, certainly

  9. one of the mountain peaks of the Old Testament. The peaceable kingdom, it's a great place to

  10. end. The wolf and the lamb lying down together. Grazing together. It's a great way to finish.

  11. And then Isaiah goes and adds another chapter. It's a long book, isn't it? 65 chapters. It's

  12. a long book. Now, we know, don't we, that Isaiah wrote under the inspiration of the Holy

  13. Spirit. It's not a mistake that Isaiah 66 is there. It's not him struggling as an aeroplane,

  14. going around the airport for one more lap, struggling whether to land. Isaiah is not a rambler.

  15. But rather, what he does in this chapter is he pulls together a number of strands. And

  16. he presents to his listeners, for one last time, the choice that lies before you. The

  17. book of Isaiah is a tale of two cities. The book begins in the earthly city of Jerusalem.

  18. And God laments, he says, Israel, you become like a prostitute. He says, your city, the city

  19. of Jerusalem is a city full of injustice and unrighteousness. But the book ends in another

  20. city. In the new Jerusalem. In the city that Isaiah calls the new heavens and the new earth.

  21. The perfect world. It ends with things as they're meant to be. And Isaiah is this kind of covenant

  22. enforcement officer. He is God's representative. He is God's lawyer who presents not only the case for the

  23. prosecution, but he also shows the rebellious and the accused. He shows you the way to the new heavens

  24. and the new earth. He shows you the way to freedom. And the question Isaiah is asked all the way through

  25. is how do we get from chapter 1 to chapter 66? How do we get from

  26. the city of Jerusalem to the new Jerusalem?

  27. How will the faithless city

  28. become the faithful city?

  29. And so Isaiah presents his closing arguments, as it were, and he turns

  30. from the question of how

  31. to the question who.

  32. Who will be there?

  33. Who will get to inhabit the new city?

  34. Who will inhabit the new heavens and the new earth?

  35. Or to put it another way, do you want to experience

  36. for eternity perfection and paradise?

  37. In the presence of God.

  38. And if you do want that, what should it mean for the now, in the present, what should your

  39. life look like?

  40. And Isaiah gives us three answers to the question.

  41. He gives us three characteristics of people

  42. who will live in the new heavens and the new earth.

  43. Let's jump right in.

  44. The first characteristic of people who will dwell in the new heavens and the new earth

  45. is that they tremble at God's word.

  46. Look at verse 1.

  47. Thus says the Lord,

  48. Heaven is my throne

  49. and the earth is my footstool.

  50. What or where

  51. is the house that you would build for me?

  52. And what or where

  53. is the place of my rest?

  54. All these things my hand has made.

  55. So all these things came to me, declares the Lord.

  56. But this is the one to whom I will look.

  57. He was humble and contrite in spirit

  58. and trembles at my word.

  59. So God begins, doesn't he, with a very simple

  60. and profound statement.

  61. He points to his sheer

  62. greatness and his immensity.

  63. And he says,

  64. The earth is

  65. my footstool.

  66. The earth on which you dwell.

  67. It's where I rest my feet.

  68. That's how massive I am.

  69. But in all his greatness,

  70. do you remember what God had promised his people?

  71. God had promised to his people

  72. that he would dwell,

  73. the great majestic creator of the heavens and the earth,

  74. he would dwell in the temple in Jerusalem.

  75. All the way back in 1 Kings chapter 8,

    1 Kings 8 chapter mention

  76. he promises to the King Solomon,

  77. I will dwell in the temple.

  78. And so God here isn't scorning

  79. that the powerful and transcendent God

  80. that he is would dwell

  81. in a human earthly edifice.

  82. What he does here,

  83. what he is really doing,

  84. is he is mocking the idea

  85. that you and I can build structures

  86. that could somehow contain God

  87. and could impress God.

  88. That the people of Israel

  89. could have a temple of the Lord

  90. that they could somehow

  91. put God in their favour.

  92. So translating verse 1

  93. is quite difficult.

  94. Most of the translations in verse 1

  95. with these words,

  96. it's simply where?

  97. Where is the house

  98. that you would build for me?

  99. But the sense,

  100. if you were to put it in colloquial English,

  101. is wherever.

  102. Wherever is this place.

  103. But God adds really a sense of irony

  104. as he so often does in Isaiah

  105. to the question.

  106. It's as if God is saying in verse 1,

  107. to be honest with you,

  108. I'm having trouble locating your temple.

  109. I'm finding it a little hard to find.

  110. Can you tell me where it is?

  111. Can you give me directions?

  112. Can you give me the postcodes?

  113. And I think that's quite humbling

  114. for you and I.

  115. That as humans,

  116. we build, don't we,

  117. these impressive edifices for God.

  118. Churches and cathedrals for God.

  119. And God professes them hard to find.

  120. Westminster Abbey.

  121. I can't quite see it.

  122. St Paul's Cathedral.

  123. Well, where is it?

  124. I.P.C.

  125. Ealing's glorious new building.

  126. No, sorry, you're going to have to give me

  127. the directions again, God says.

  128. It's not that God doesn't know where it is.

  129. Of course he does.

  130. That's not the point.

  131. It's not that he despises buildings.

  132. Like many evangelicals do.

  133. He mustn't do that.

  134. It's not that he rejects the motives

  135. of the building's construction.

  136. Rather he's saying,

  137. your buildings

  138. are not where my eyes

  139. easily and readily focus.

  140. God does not repudiate

  141. houses of worship.

  142. But God does say,

  143. your buildings are not the sharpest focus

  144. in my field of vision.

  145. That's not where he holds in on.

  146. That's not where God looks this morning.

  147. Where does God look?

  148. Where does God look?

  149. Can you see?

  150. Verse 2.

  151. He looks at those.

  152. These are the ones

  153. that I look on with favour.

  154. This is the one to whom I will look.

  155. Those who are humble

  156. and contrite in spirit

  157. and tremble at my Lord.

  158. The Lord's priority is very clear.

  159. It is not the building we construct.

  160. It is not the building

  161. that we seek to improve.

  162. In which we gather.

  163. No, it is ultimately

  164. the man or the woman

  165. or the boy or the girl

  166. who is humble

  167. and contrite in spirit

  168. and trembles at his word.

  169. There is one.

  170. There is one

  171. in the midst of all creation.

  172. In the midst of the sun

  173. and the stars

  174. and all the feasts

  175. and all the parties

  176. and all the feats

  177. of engineering

  178. and all the architecture.

  179. There is one

  180. that secures the gaze

  181. of the great creator

  182. and it is the individual

  183. who is humble.

  184. The people who are humble.

  185. And it's contrite in spirit

  186. and trembles at my word.

  187. The word contrite

  188. is translated in other places

  189. as lame.

  190. Usually it's about

  191. physical lameness.

  192. But here

  193. and only here

  194. in the Old Testament

  195. it has this sense

  196. of inability spiritually.

  197. It's not just

  198. a sense of our sin

  199. but a sense

  200. of the damage

  201. that sin has done

  202. to you.

  203. That you and I

  204. are helpless

  205. in pleasing God.

  206. Have you come to that point?

  207. That you are

  208. spiritually lame.

  209. The word humble

  210. is a word we use

  211. more often

  212. than the word contrite.

  213. But we're still confused

  214. I think

  215. what it means.

  216. To paraphrase C.S. Lewis

  217. it's not thinking

  218. less of yourself.

  219. Of course it's not.

  220. But it's thinking

  221. of yourself less.

  222. And that's an important

  223. distinction.

  224. And the Bible

  225. directs us

  226. along the path

  227. of humility

  228. by instructing

  229. instructing you

  230. to think of yourself

  231. less

  232. and think of God

  233. more.

  234. So how do you know

  235. if you're living

  236. a life of humility?

  237. How do you know

  238. if you're living

  239. a life of contrition

  240. and spirit

  241. as a citizen

  242. of the new heavens

  243. and the new earth?

  244. And Isaiah

  245. gives us one

  246. clear indication

  247. and it is this

  248. that you tremble

  249. at his word.

  250. And Isaiah

  251. sees that characteristic

  252. as one that sets

  253. true followers

  254. of God off

  255. from those

  256. who are not

  257. actually following.

  258. they have the

  259. appearance of

  260. following

  261. but they're not.

  262. And so in

  263. verses 3 to 4

  264. he describes

  265. those who go

  266. through the motions

  267. of religious

  268. activity.

  269. He says

  270. they turn up

  271. at church.

  272. They make

  273. great show.

  274. They actually

  275. make great

  276. sacrifices.

  277. They do other

  278. things but they

  279. don't tremble

  280. at God's word.

  281. They have

  282. vibrant worship.

  283. Loud worship.

  284. Noisy,

  285. fervent worship

  286. but they don't

  287. tremble at God's word.

  288. And God says

  289. actually you might

  290. look really

  291. super spiritual

  292. this morning

  293. but to me

  294. they are sinful.

  295. Your worship

  296. is meaningless.

  297. It is

  298. unacceptable.

  299. It is apostate.

  300. I have to tell you

  301. that this verse

  302. about trembling

  303. at God's word

  304. has really stuck

  305. in my craw

  306. this week.

  307. And it's a huge

  308. challenge.

  309. Two weeks ago

  310. I was in Poland

  311. I wanted to go

  312. to see the

  313. Polish National

  314. Cathedral that's

  315. just built.

  316. We went in

  317. and they had

  318. a celebration

  319. of the mass.

  320. And I sat

  321. at the back

  322. while I stood

  323. at the back

  324. and watched.

  325. I don't know

  326. whether you've

  327. done that.

  328. It's quite a

  329. heartbreaking thing

  330. to watch really.

  331. But within me

  332. there was

  333. a smug superiority

  334. as the man

  335. rattled through

  336. and he doesn't

  337. believe a word

  338. of this.

  339. These people

  340. don't know

  341. what they're

  342. doing.

  343. When you come

  344. to Isaiah

  345. 66 and

  346. verse 2

  347. I think

  348. if you are

  349. spiritually

  350. haughty

  351. or pride

  352. as I am

  353. proud as I

  354. am it cuts

  355. the legs

  356. from under you.

  357. Because God

  358. says here are

  359. the ones that

  360. I delight to

  361. look upon

  362. it is those

  363. who tremble

  364. at my word.

  365. And the

  366. scripture is

  367. read.

  368. Do you have

  369. that sense

  370. of holy

  371. reverence?

  372. When you

  373. get your

  374. Bible open

  375. at home

  376. to read

  377. with your

  378. family

  379. to read

  380. it yourself

  381. that sensitive

  382. reverence

  383. that we

  384. come to

  385. the Lord

  386. God

  387. to hear

  388. him speak

  389. to obey

  390. whatever he

  391. says.

  392. And we

  393. tremble at

  394. God's word

  395. because it

  396. is God's

  397. word.

  398. God's

  399. word.

  400. It is the

  401. word of the

  402. sovereign.

  403. The word of

  404. the almighty

  405. God of the

  406. universe.

  407. It is the

  408. word of the

  409. God who

  410. has revealed

  411. himself.

  412. The God

  413. who has

  414. revealed himself

  415. through Isaiah

  416. as the

  417. only God.

  418. The God

  419. who will

  420. abide no

  421. rivals.

  422. The God

  423. who scorns

  424. our worship

  425. of idols.

  426. And the

  427. only God

  428. who will

  429. forgive our

  430. sin.

  431. The only

  432. God who

  433. has sent a

  434. rescuer for

  435. you and

  436. me in

  437. his

  438. suffering

  439. servant.

  440. The only

  441. God who

  442. renews the

  443. strength of

  444. those who

  445. wait for

  446. him.

  447. Those Isaiah

  448. said who

  449. are the

  450. citizens of

  451. the heaven

  452. and the

  453. new earth

  454. whose future

  455. is guaranteed

  456. are those

  457. who tremble

  458. at God's

  459. word.

  460. And that

  461. might be

  462. very difficult

  463. for you to

  464. get your

  465. head around

  466. because you

  467. say I

  468. don't want

  469. to tremble

  470. before God.

  471. Isn't

  472. God the

  473. God of

  474. love?

  475. Isn't

  476. God the

  477. God of

  478. compassion?

  479. The God

  480. of comfort?

  481. Why do

  482. you

  483. tremble

  484. before

  485. him?

  486. Why would

  487. we have

  488. such an

  489. attitude of

  490. fear?

  491. Let me

  492. give you

  493. an

  494. illustration.

  495. Imagine

  496. you are

  497. exploring

  498. an unknown

  499. glacier on

  500. the north

  501. of Greenland.

  502. I know it's

  503. one of those

  504. ridiculous

  505. illustrations.

  506. But let's

  507. say you're

  508. exploring a

  509. glacier in

  510. the north of

  511. Greenland in

  512. the dead of

  513. winter just

  514. as you reach

  515. the sheer

  516. cliff with

  517. a spectacular

  518. view of miles

  519. and miles

  520. of jagged

  521. ice snow

  522. mountains.

  523. And there

  524. is a terrible

  525. storm arises.

  526. And the

  527. wind is so

  528. strong that

  529. you are

  530. absolutely

  531. scared stiff

  532. that you're

  533. going to be

  534. blown off.

  535. You and

  536. your party

  537. right over

  538. the cliff.

  539. But in

  540. the midst

  541. you discover

  542. one of the

  543. party discovers

  544. there is a

  545. cleft in the

  546. ice where you

  547. can hide and

  548. so you go in

  549. there.

  550. And you

  551. feel secure.

  552. And the

  553. mighty power of

  554. the storm

  555. it rages on

  556. but you

  557. watch it

  558. with a

  559. kind of

  560. trembling.

  561. With a

  562. kind of

  563. trembling

  564. pleasure.

  565. It surges

  566. across the

  567. glacier.

  568. Now the

  569. question is

  570. this.

  571. What's

  572. changed in

  573. your experience

  574. of the

  575. storm?

  576. Initially

  577. you had this

  578. fear that

  579. this terrible

  580. storm could

  581. literally claim

  582. your life.

  583. But then

  584. you found a

  585. refuge.

  586. And so you

  587. gained the

  588. hope that you

  589. would be safe

  590. but not

  591. everything in

  592. the feeling of

  593. fear has

  594. vanished.

  595. does it?

  596. Only the

  597. life-threatening

  598. part has

  599. vanished.

  600. Because there

  601. remains,

  602. doesn't there,

  603. a trembling

  604. awe and

  605. wonder and

  606. fear.

  607. The feeling

  608. that you

  609. would never

  610. want to

  611. tangle with

  612. such a

  613. storm or

  614. be the

  615. adversary of

  616. such a

  617. power.

  618. And so it

  619. is with our

  620. attitude towards

  621. God.

  622. Trusting in

  623. God and

  624. his promises

  625. turns terror

  626. into a

  627. holy and

  628. hopeful and

  629. dare I say

  630. happy

  631. trembling.

  632. Into a

  633. peaceful

  634. trembling.

  635. Into a

  636. trustful

  637. trembling.

  638. God and

  639. Mr.

  640. Beaver,

  641. isn't it,

  642. in the

  643. Lion,

  644. the

  645. Witch and

  646. the

  647. Wardrobe.

  648. You

  649. remember the

  650. scene?

  651. Beaver

  652. describes

  653. Aslan's

  654. might and

  655. majesty.

  656. Aslan,

  657. the

  658. lion,

  659. God as

  660. it were.

  661. And as

  662. he finishes,

  663. Lucy says,

  664. is he

  665. safe?

  666. Mr.

  667. Beaver says,

  668. safe?

  669. Who said

  670. anything about

  671. safe?

  672. Of course he

  673. isn't safe.

  674. But he is

  675. good.

  676. He's a

  677. king, I

  678. tell you.

  679. And you

  680. see, those

  681. who are

  682. citizens of

  683. the new

  684. heavens and

  685. the new

  686. earth are

  687. humble and

  688. contrite.

  689. And they

  690. demonstrate it

  691. by trembling

  692. at God's

  693. word.

  694. Because it

  695. is the

  696. word of

  697. God.

  698. That brings

  699. us to the

  700. second characteristic

  701. of people who

  702. live in the

  703. new heavens and

  704. the new

  705. earth.

  706. And that is

  707. that they are

  708. citizens through

  709. a new birth.

  710. Look at

  711. verses 6

  712. to 9.

  713. The sound of

  714. an uproar from

  715. the city,

  716. the sound from

  717. the temple,

  718. the sound of

  719. the Lord,

  720. rendering

  721. recompense to

  722. his enemies.

  723. Before she

  724. was in

  725. labor, she

  726. gave birth.

  727. Before her

  728. pain came upon

  729. her, she

  730. delivered a

  731. son.

  732. Who has

  733. heard such

  734. a thing?

  735. Who has

  736. seen such

  737. things?

  738. Shall a

  739. land be

  740. born in

  741. one day?

  742. Shall a

  743. nation be

  744. brought forth

  745. in one

  746. moment?

  747. For as

  748. soon as

  749. Zion was

  750. in labor,

  751. she brought

  752. forth her

  753. children.

  754. Shall I

  755. bring to

  756. the point

  757. of birth and

  758. not cause

  759. to bring

  760. forth,

  761. says the

  762. Lord?

  763. Shall I

  764. who caused

  765. to bring

  766. forth shut

  767. the womb,

  768. says your

  769. God?

  770. So it's

  771. not an

  772. easy passage,

  773. but it

  774. seems Isaiah

  775. is prophesying

  776. of the

  777. destruction of

  778. Jerusalem,

  779. that God

  780. will judge

  781. those who

  782. have turned

  783. their backs

  784. on him.

  785. Destruction

  786. that will

  787. come at the

  788. hands of

  789. the Babylonians.

  790. In 587

  791. BC,

  792. 587 BC,

  793. at which time

  794. the temple

  795. would be

  796. destroyed.

  797. If you

  798. read on in

  799. the New

  800. Testament,

  801. you come

  802. to the

  803. point where

  804. the temple

  805. is rebuilt.

  806. It's rebuilt

  807. after the

  808. return of

  809. the exiles,

  810. in the time

  811. of Ezra

  812. and Nehemiah.

  813. But the

  814. temple is a

  815. shadow of

  816. the first

  817. one.

  818. The old

  819. people,

  820. they cry

  821. because the

  822. second temple

  823. is not a

  824. patch on

  825. the first

  826. one.

  827. And that

  828. temple would

  829. be destroyed,

  830. wouldn't it,

  831. in AD

  832. 70.

  833. AD 70,

  834. just a few

  835. years after

  836. Jesus'

  837. death and

  838. resurrection.

  839. So there

  840. are many

  841. Christians who

  842. read this

  843. section of

  844. Isaiah

  845. differently.

  846. But my

  847. sense is

  848. Isaiah is

  849. looking forward

  850. to that

  851. later destruction

  852. of the

  853. temple,

  854. the one in

  855. AD 70.

  856. And he

  857. says something

  858. miraculous is

  859. going to

  860. happen before

  861. that destruction.

  862. That before

  863. Israel goes

  864. into labour,

  865. she will give

  866. birth.

  867. Before the

  868. pains come upon

  869. her, she

  870. will deliver a

  871. son.

  872. Who's

  873. heard of

  874. such a

  875. thing?

  876. Who's

  877. ever seen

  878. such a

  879. thing?

  880. And the

  881. answer is

  882. no one.

  883. And in

  884. Isaiah at

  885. the same

  886. time,

  887. Isaiah is

  888. already told

  889. us of

  890. this great

  891. event.

  892. Earlier in

  893. his book,

  894. he's prophesied

  895. to the

  896. miraculous

  897. birth of

  898. a son sometime

  899. in the

  900. future.

  901. So do you

  902. remember Isaiah

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  903. chapter 7?

  904. Words that

  905. we're so

  906. familiar with

  907. at Christmas,

  908. isn't it?

  909. She will give

  910. birth, she

  911. will give you

  912. a sign the

  913. virgin will

  914. conceive and

  915. give birth to

  916. a son and you

  917. will call his

  918. name Emmanuel.

  919. And Isaiah is

  920. covered a lot of

  921. ground from

  922. chapter 7.

  923. And in

  924. hindsight, we

  925. know a lot

  926. more, even

  927. though, even

  928. through the

  929. book of

  930. Isaiah as

  931. to who this

  932. son will

  933. be, this

  934. Emmanuel.

  935. So just a

  936. couple of

  937. chapters later,

  938. chapter 9,

  939. the son is the

  940. one who will

  941. be given.

  942. The son is the

  943. one who is

  944. born and will

  945. be called

  946. wonderful

  947. counsellor,

  948. mighty God,

  949. everlasting

  950. father, prince

  951. of peace, and

  952. upon his

  953. shoulders, the

  954. increase of his

  955. government will be

  956. no end.

  957. Because this

  958. Emmanuel, this

  959. son, will be

  960. the king.

  961. And as we read

  962. through the book

  963. of Isaiah, we

  964. find that the

  965. king will come

  966. as a servant.

  967. And he will be

  968. a servant who

  969. will suffer and

  970. will die in our

  971. place and he

  972. will be pierced

  973. for our

  974. transgressions and

  975. crushed for our

  976. iniquities and by

  977. his wounds we

  978. will be healed.

  979. And when you

  980. realise that our

  981. citizenship is in

  982. the new heavens and

  983. the new earth, it

  984. is completely and

  985. entirely and

  986. totally dependent on

  987. this son whom God

  988. will send.

  989. This son who was

  990. miraculously born

  991. will come as the

  992. servant king.

  993. But Isaiah says

  994. that is not all.

  995. He says from his

  996. birth will come your

  997. rebirth.

  998. Zion gives birth not

  999. only to a son but

  1000. she gives birth,

  1001. verse 8, to her

  1002. children.

  1003. So that from the

  1004. birth of this one

  1005. son comes

  1006. instantaneously a

  1007. country, a

  1008. people, a

  1009. nation.

  1010. That's exactly what

  1011. you discover when

  1012. you come to the

  1013. New Testament.

  1014. The birth of a

  1015. son gives birth to

  1016. a movement.

  1017. A movement that

  1018. cannot be contained

  1019. within ethnical,

  1020. political or

  1021. territorial boundaries.

  1022. It's a movement

  1023. that creates a

  1024. people without

  1025. borders that

  1026. encompasses every

  1027. tribe and tongue

  1028. nation.

  1029. It's the church

  1030. of Jesus Christ.

  1031. It's the people of

  1032. the new creation.

  1033. It's the citizens of

  1034. the new heavens and

  1035. the new earth.

1036. And so you see this

  1037. citizenship is not

  1038. based on where you

  1039. were born, is it?

  1040. It's not based on

  1041. your postcode.

1042. And it's not based on

  1043. your family heritage.

1044. It's not based on the

  1045. amount of income that

  1046. you report on your

  1047. tax return.

  1048. Our citizenship of

  1049. the new heavens and

  1050. the new earth comes

  1051. through a rebirth.

  1052. Because without being

  1053. born again, Jesus

  1054. says, you cannot see

  1055. the kingdom of

  1056. heaven.

  1057. The words of the

  1058. apostle Peter, 1

  1059. Peter 3 and 4 says,

  1060. praise be to the

1061. God and Father of our

  1062. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1063. In his great mercy,

1064. he has given us new

  1065. birth, rebirth,

  1066. regeneration,

  1067. into a living hope

  1068. through the resurrection

  1069. of Jesus Christ from

  1070. the dead, into an

  1071. inheritance that will

  1072. never spoil, never

  1073. perish, never spoil,

  1074. never fade.

  1075. You see, citizenship in

1076. the new heavens and the

  1077. new earth depends

  1078. completely on being

  1079. reborn, receiving a new

  1080. birth that comes

  1081. through faith.

1082. faith in the one who

  1083. was miraculously born,

  1084. but who died and

  1085. raised again and he

  1086. reigns forever.

  1087. Just briefly before we

  1088. look at the last

  1089. characteristic, can you

1090. notice in verse 10 to

  1091. 13, he moves,

  1092. doesn't he, from the

  1093. prenatal room to the

  1094. nursery.

  1095. And these are

  1096. remarkable verses.

1097. It gives you and I an

  1098. astounding image of the

1099. church as a mother who

  1100. nurses or feeds her

  1101. children.

1102. And then it plays with

1103. the image a little bit

1104. and extends the image to

  1105. the comforting mother to

  1106. God himself.

1107. God is portrayed as a

  1108. mother.

  1109. In verses 12 and 13.

1110. But thus says the Lord,

1111. behold, I extend peace to

1112. her like a river and the

1113. glory of the nations like

  1114. an overflowing stream.

1115. And you shall nurse, you

1116. shall be carried upon her

1117. hip and bounced upon her

  1118. knees.

1119. And as one whom his

  1120. mother comforts, so I

  1121. will comfort you.

1122. You shall be comforted in

  1123. Jerusalem.

  1124. Do you remember those

1125. days back when, when you

1126. were little, when you were

  1127. weak?

1128. For some of us that's

  1129. difficult.

1130. We can barely remember what

1131. we had for breakfast, but

1132. try and remember what it was

1133. like when we were little.

  1134. There are certain

  1135. particular scenes out there

1136. that are etched into our

  1137. memories of our mothers.

  1138. From our earliest

  1139. memories.

  1140. Sitting on our mothers'

  1141. knees, being bounced up

1142. and down, up and down,

  1143. up and down.

  1144. Giggling and smiling.

  1145. Mothers singing nursery rhymes

1146. and lullabies, kissing us in

  1147. delight, hugging and

  1148. caressing you when there

  1149. were tears.

1150. I am in awe of mothers.

1151. The patience of the mothers

1152. of this church with their

  1153. little children.

  1154. It's, it's an amazing thing.

1155. The softness and the beauty.

  1156. It comes more innately.

1157. Not so in awe of the dads.

  1158. I don't find that that

  1159. patience comes as

  1160. naturally.

  1161. I might be wrong.

  1162. I might be terribly

  1163. successful in this.

  1164. Who cares?

1165. But God says that is who I

  1166. am.

1167. That is who I am.

1168. That is who I am to my

  1169. children.

1170. He is like a gentle

  1171. mother.

  1172. Mouncing.

  1173. His children on their

  1174. knees.

1175. God is not an ogre.

1176. God is not an ogre.

1177. God is not standing over

  1178. his people this morning

1179. with a stick ready to

  1180. beat you.

1181. This is a God who wants

1182. to be like a mother to

  1183. you.

  1184. It's an astounding

  1185. picture.

  1186. Lastly, the third

  1187. characteristic of the new

  1188. heavens and the new

1189. earth is that they are

1190. sent into the world to

  1191. proclaim God's glory.

1192. They are sent into the

  1193. world to proclaim God's

  1194. glory.

  1195. In verses 18 to 20.

1196. For I know their works

  1197. and their thoughts.

1198. And the time is coming to

  1199. gather all nations and

  1200. tongues.

1201. And they will come and see

  1202. my glory.

1203. Do you see the direction

  1204. they are coming?

  1205. Verse 19.

1206. And I will set aside among

1207. them and from them I will

  1208. send.

  1209. That is going.

1210. I will send survivors to

  1211. the nations.

  1212. Tarshish,

  1213. Paul and Lod.

1214. Who draw the bow to

1215. Tubal and Jabin to the

  1216. coastlands far away.

1217. And have not heard my

1218. fame or seen my glory.

1219. And they shall declare my

  1220. glory.

  1221. And they shall bring

  1222. forth all your brothers

1223. and sisters from all the

  1224. nations as an offering

1225. to the Lord on horses

1226. and in chariots and in

1227. litters and on mules and

  1228. on dromedaries.

  1229. To my holy mountain

  1230. Jerusalem says the Lord.

  1231. God's plan throughout the

  1232. scripture has always been

  1233. to go global.

1234. It has always been to go

  1235. global.

1236. You see that with Adam.

1237. You see that with Noah.

1238. You see that with Abraham.

1239. To go global with this gift

  1240. of grace and salvation.

  1241. He is gathering his

  1242. rescuing activity.

  1243. Here it is.

  1244. He's gathering his

  1245. rescuing activity was a

  1246. season restricted to those

  1247. who'd been dispersed into

  1248. exile from Israel.

1249. But the bigger plan was

  1250. always, always to extend

1251. that rescue to all people.

1252. John Stott points to three

  1253. things here that Isaiah

  1254. says about the global

  1255. mission program of God.

1256. First of all he tells us

  1257. the occasion of this

  1258. global mission program.

1259. Verse 18 God is saying

  1260. mission activity will be

  1261. precipitated.

1262. The thing that will come

  1263. before this great mission

  1264. activity is the rejection

  1265. of Israel.

  1266. By God's word.

1267. Now the ESV, the ESV, I

  1268. love the ESV.

  1269. I wouldn't want to go back

1270. to the NIV but sometimes

1271. it is so literal it's

  1272. incomprehensible.

1273. And so look at, look at

1274. your, the service sheet on

  1275. page seven.

1276. The NIV is a little bit

  1277. better here.

  1278. And more helpful.

1279. And so verse 18 says

1280. for I know their works and

1281. their thoughts and the time

1282. is coming to gather all

  1283. nations and tongues and

1284. they shall come and see my

  1285. glory.

1286. The they there is referring

1287. to Israel because of what

1288. they done or not done.

  1289. Because of their works.

  1290. Because I know their

  1291. works and their thoughts.

1292. Because of what they done

  1293. or not done.

1294. God says I'm going to come

1295. and gather the people of

  1296. all nations.

  1297. Now because of Israel's

  1298. rejection we see this

1299. pattern again and again in

  1300. the New Testament.

  1301. Israel, the Jews, they

  1302. reject the Lord Jesus.

1303. And what happens is the

1304. gospel goes out to the

  1305. nations.

1306. So four times the Jews

1307. reject the preaching of the

1308. word in Acts by Paul and

1309. he turns and evangelizes the

  1310. Gentiles.

  1311. It happens in Pisidian,

  1312. Antioch, in Corinth, in

1313. Ephesus and then in Rome.

  1314. Now of course there's a

1315. remnant of Jews who believe,

  1316. praise God.

1317. Many Jews did put their

1318. trust and faith in the

1319. Messiah but there were many

  1320. more who rejected God's

  1321. word.

1322. And that led to the spread of

1323. the message to the Gentiles

  1324. to us.

1325. So the occasion was the

1326. rejection of God's word by

  1327. Israel.

1328. Secondly, the scope of God's

  1329. mission program.

  1330. Can you see that?

1331. I will gather people from all

  1332. nations and tongues.

1333. And Isaiah signals out five

  1334. places that represent the

1335. four points in the compass.

1336. You have Tarshish which is a

1337. city in Spain at the western

  1338. end of the empire.

1339. You have Pul and Lud which are

  1340. in the southern part.

1341. You have Tubal which is in

  1342. the far north.

1343. And you have Java and

1344. Greece which is in the

1345. eastern end of the empire.

1346. And then the distant lands

  1347. beyond that.

1348. And these are the places

  1349. aren't they?

  1350. Isaiah looks around.

  1351. He's at the Atlas.

1352. He looks around the world

  1353. at the furthest outposts.

  1354. And he says,

  1355. this proclamation of God's

1356. glory will grow up to them.

1357. But this mission was to go

  1358. from Cameroon to Kazakhstan.

  1359. From Leeds to Liberia.

  1360. From Ealing to Estonia.

1361. To go all over the world.

1362. But this movement was to have

  1363. no ethnic or geographical

  1364. or national boundaries.

  1365. And that squares exactly

1366. with what happened in the

  1367. book of Acts.

  1368. Doesn't it?

  1369. Acts 1 verse 8.

    Acts 1:8

1370. He says to the apostles,

  1371. the disciples,

1372. you will receive power when

1373. the Holy Spirit comes upon

  1374. you.

1375. And you will be my witnesses

  1376. where?

  1377. Jerusalem.

  1378. And Judea.

  1379. And Samaria.

1380. And the ends of the earth.

1381. And so at the end of the

  1382. book of Acts,

1383. it can be said that the

1384. gospels go to the end of

  1385. the world.

  1386. Just as Isaiah prophesied.

  1387. And then thirdly,

1388. there's the goal of mission.

1389. And it's nothing short of

  1390. the glory of God.

1391. That is that God would be

1392. known and honoured for who

  1393. he is.

1394. And that shouldn't surprise us.

1395. All of life is intended to

1396. be for the glory of God.

  1397. Why were you created?

1398. What is your chief end?

1399. The chief end of man is to

1400. glorify God and enjoy him

  1401. forever.

  1402. What's particularly striking

1403. in this passage is God is

1404. sending out messages to the

1405. nations to proclaim the glory

  1406. of God.

1407. Through the rest of the Old

  1408. Testament, God promises the

1409. nations will come to Zion.

1410. There will be this pilgrimage

1411. of the nations, like rivers

  1412. flowing towards Jerusalem.

1413. It's only when you come to the

1414. end of the New Testament.

1415. To the New Testament, this

  1416. movement goes from the

  1417. nations to Jerusalem.

1418. It's replaced by God sending

1419. out from Jerusalem to the

  1420. nations.

1421. But the one exception is in

1422. the Old Testament, Isaiah 66,

  1423. 19.

1424. Where God says, I will send

1425. out to proclaim my glory to

  1426. the nations.

1427. And as the story of God's

  1428. people continues, we discover

1429. that those who are brought in

1430. are brought in to be sent

  1431. out again.

1432. Those who are citizens of the

1433. new heavens and the new

  1434. earth.

1435. They are brought in and sent

1436. out as missionaries to proclaim

  1437. the glory of God.

1438. And that includes you and that

  1439. includes me.

1440. That we are to live and to

1441. proclaim the glory of God.

  1442. In your home.

1443. In the way that you treat your

  1444. children.

1445. In the way that you work.

1446. In the way that you use your

  1447. leisure time.

  1448. In your school.

1449. And in your social circle.

  1450. And in your neighbourhood.

1451. So that those around you will

1452. come and know how great God

  1453. is.

1454. And you might say, that sounds

  1455. great.

1456. How do I exactly proclaim the

  1457. glory of God?

1458. Listen to these words from Paul

  1459. from 2 Corinthians 4.

1460. For God who said, let light

1461. shine out of darkness, made his

1462. light shine in our hearts.

1463. To give us the light of the

  1464. knowledge of God's glory

1465. displayed in the face of

  1466. Christ.

1467. The glory of God is most

  1468. clearly demonstrated and

1469. proclaimed the person and work

1470. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1471. To proclaim the glory of God,

1472. you need to love Jesus.

  1473. Live for Jesus.

  1474. And talk about Jesus.

  1475. It's really simple, isn't it?

  1476. I'm really hard.

  1477. And that's what we're talking

  1478. about.

1479. That if we are citizens of the

1480. new heavens and the new earth,

1481. which is another way of saying,

  1482. are you a Christian?

1483. You understand that it's part and

  1484. parcel of your life.

1485. To live for, to love, and to

  1486. speak about Jesus.

1487. So the book of Isaiah moves from

1488. the earthly city of Jerusalem to

1489. the new heavens and the new earth.

1490. It's in some ways the summary of

  1491. the Bible, isn't it?

1492. Genesis 1 begins in the

  1493. beginning, God created the

  1494. heavens and the earth.

1495. And the Bible ends with God

1496. created the new heavens and the

  1497. new earth.

  1498. And Isaiah encapsulates the

  1499. movement of the Bible.

1500. For those who are citizens of

  1501. this new world, three

  1502. characteristics.

1503. You tremble at his word.

1504. You realize you can only be a

  1505. citizen through rebirth, through

  1506. being born again.

1507. And thirdly, you understand that

  1508. you've been sent out with a

  1509. mandate, a commission to

  1510. proclaim God's glory.

  1511. The end.

  1512. It's not, is it?

1513. Let's circle the airport one more

  1514. time.

1515. Look at the last verse.

1516. And they shall grow out and they

1517. shall look on the dead bodies of

1518. the men who've rebelled against

1519. me for their worms shall not die,

1520. their fire shall not be quenched,

1521. and they shall be an abhorrence to

  1522. all flesh.

1523. What a beautiful ending to the

  1524. book.

1525. You know when Isaiah 66 is read in

1526. the Jewish synagogue today, they read

1527. verse 24, and then they go back and

1528. read verse 23 again because they

1529. cannot believe that it should end in

  1530. such a book, such a verse.

1531. They don't want to finish it with

  1532. such a horrid ending.

1533. But we have to figure out that Isaiah

1534. knew what he's doing, that he

1535. finishes this book in the way that he

  1536. intends to finish.

1537. He wants you and I to sit bold

1538. upright and to listen up.

1539. Because what he does at the end of

1540. verse 24 is he says, if you will not

  1541. tremble at God's word.

1542. If you will not be born again, if you

1543. will not proclaim the glory of God in

1544. the person of the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1545. verse 24 awaits.

1546. And you might be tempted to say, oh

  1547. that's so Old Testament isn't it?

1548. We are New Testament people, in fact

  1549. let's go even better.

  1550. I'm a red letter Christian, I just

1551. believe in the words that Jesus says,

1552. you know the ones in the red words.

1553. Jesus will rescue us out of this, right?

1554. Jesus says in Mark 8, 12, the subjects of

1555. the kingdom will be thrown into outer

1556. darkness and in that place there will be

1557. weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  1558. It's an indirect quote of Isaiah 66, 24.

1559. There is no one other than Jesus who talks about

  1560. this outer darkness.

1561. What is he talking about?

  1562. He's talking about Isaiah 66, 24.

1563. Where Isaiah says, people who have heard me,

1564. who have heard this prophecy,

1565. and yet they don't tremble,

1566. and they're not born again,

1567. and they don't proclaim the glory of God,

1568. they will go to this outer darkness.

  1569. And in Mark 9, 9, 47,

1570. Jesus says, if your right hand causes you to sin,

1571. tear it out, because it's better for you

1572. to enter the kingdom of God with one eye

1573. than with two eyes to be thrown into hell

1574. where the worm does not die.

  1575. Isaiah 66, 24.

  1576. Because this is real.

1577. Now you could finish the servant series here

  1578. with a little light-hearted story

  1579. that breaks the tension.

1580. But for me to do that would be

1581. a great disservice to the book of Isaiah.

1582. Because that is not how Isaiah

1583. wants to finish his book.

1584. He says, this is reality.

1585. And if you rebel against the living God,

1586. who is the loving God

1587. who came to rescue you,

1588. who is the living God,

  1589. who is the God

1590. who sent his son in this world

1591. to suffer in your place,

1592. who is the living God

1593. who wants to comfort you

  1594. like a mother,

  1595. if you refuse that,

1596. the only thing left for you

  1597. is justice.

  1598. Let's pray.

  1599. Let's pray.

  1600. Let's pray.

  1601. Let's pray.
