  1. And my text for tonight is, and we need this 5 verse 18.

  2. ! And do not get drunk with wine, for that is the votary, but be filled with the Spirit.

  3. This is not a temperance sermon, alright?

  4. I think the Bible, when it talks about alcohol, talks about moderation rather than total abstinence.

  5. I'm not going to talk about wine or beer tonight.

  6. But there is a contrast here.

  7. See what it says?

  8. Do not get drunk on wine, but be filled instead.

  9. Filled with the Spirit.

  10. That is the text.

  11. Steve Jobs was the founder of Apple.

  12. And he died 10 years ago this year.

  13. He was a creative genius, really.

  14. And he said this, he said, when I was 17, I read a quote that went something like this.

  15. If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you will almost certainly be right.

  16. Well, that was true for him, wasn't it, 10 years ago?

  17. But it made an impression on me, he said.

  18. And since then, since those 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and I have asked myself,

  19. if today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I'm about to do today?

  20. And whenever the answer has been no for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

  21. Well, what do you need to change tonight?

  22. How do you want to live the rest of your life?

  23. My question is that Steve Jobs asked.

  24. What do you need to change?

  25. And how do you want to live your life?

  26. Look what it says in these verses.

  27. Look carefully then how you walk.

  28. Not as unwise, but as wise.

  29. Making the best use of the time because the days are evil.

  30. Don't be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

  31. Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit.

  32. Two things from the little paragraph.

  33. First point is really short.

  34. And the second point is very, very long.

  35. First thing is a contrast.

  36. Second thing is a command.

  37. So firstly, let's look at the contrast.

  38. Verse 18.

  39. Do not get drunk with wine, but be filled with the Spirit.

  40. Now there are some people that take him to be saying,

  41. and you sometimes hear this in Christian circles.

  42. They take him to be saying that being filled with the Spirit

  43. is like being drunk with wine or beer.

  44. Or whatever your poison is.

  45. But that is not what he's saying.

  46. Paul isn't making a comparison here.

  47. Paul isn't making so much of a comparison, but drawing a contrast.

  48. And it's a very sharp contrast.

  49. Now being drunk and being filled are not the same thing.

  50. There are similarities.

  51. There is a comparison.

  52. So you remember, don't you, on the day of Pentecost?

  53. We're told that the ascended Christ, Jesus Christ, gave the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  54. And we're told about that at the beginning of Acts 2,

  55. that they were filled with the Spirit, and people thought that they were drunk.

  56. Do you remember?

  57. And Peter had to say to them, listen, it's only 9 o'clock in the morning,

  58. the pubs aren't even open.

  59. And we're not drunk.

  60. This isn't drunkenness.

  61. But the very fact that people could think that they were drunk

  62. means that there is some kind of comparison.

  63. But it's only very fleeting.

  64. I suppose you could say that both the drunk and the Spirit-filled person

  65. are under the influence, aren't they?

  66. And that is where the comparison ends.

  67. And the contrast begins.

  68. Dr. Martin, I'll tell you in his series on Ephesians,

  69. talks about the stimulus of the Spirit.

  70. I don't agree with everything he says about the Holy Spirit in those volumes.

  71. But listen to what he says.

  72. He's writing both as a doctor and as a pastor.

  73. And he compares and he contrasts the two states of drunkenness

  74. and being filled with the Spirit.

  75. He says wine, alcohol, pharmacologically speaking,

  76. is not a stimulant, it's a depressant.

  77. Take up any book on pharmacology and look up alcohol

  78. and you'll find it's always classified as amongst the depressants,

  79. not the stimulants.

  80. First of all, it depresses the highest centres in the brain.

  81. They control everything that gives a man self-control, wisdom,

  82. understanding, discrimination, judgment, balance,

  83. the power to assess everything.

  84. In other words, everything that makes a man behave at his best and highest

  85. takes away that.

  86. What the Holy Spirit does is the exact opposite.

  87. The doctor says,

  88. if it were possible to put the Holy Spirit into a textbook on pharmacology,

  89. I would put him under the stimulants,

  90. for that is where he belongs.

  91. He really does stimulate.

  92. He stimulates every faculty.

  93. The mind, the intellect, the heart and the will.

  94. Now I think you can see that very clearly in this paragraph.

  95. There's so much in this little paragraph.

  96. We could put a whole series of sermons on it.

  97. But there is, you can see it almost at a glance,

  98. this startling contrast between being drunk

  99. and being filled with the Spirit.

  100. Just look at these verses in a moment.

  101. You see the drunk, he staggers around all over the place.

  102. He doesn't know where he is.

  103. He can't walk in a straight line.

  104. That's what they used to do, didn't they,

  105. before random breath testing.

  106. You were asked to get out of your car.

  107. You kind of blew into a bag.

  108. And then the policeman said to you,

  109. can you walk in a straight line?

  110. That drunk person cannot walk in a straight line.

  111. But the Spirit-filled person, verse 15,

  112. knows exactly where he's going.

  113. He's careful how he walks.

  114. It says there in verse 15, literally.

  115. And then verse 18,

  116. drunkenness leads to debauchery.

  117. It says in our text, it talks about riotous living.

  118. We say, don't we, he's wasted.

  119. Totally wasted when he's drunk.

  120. But the Spirit-filled person, if you look at verse 16,

  121. is someone who is not wasted,

  122. but at verse 16 he makes the best use of time.

  123. And he makes the most of every opportunity.

  124. If one of the researchers,

  125. there are about three and a half million

  126. working days lost to alcohol and drugs.

  127. Can you see the contrast?

  128. There's no staggering all over the place.

  129. There's no wasted days for the Spirit-filled person.

  130. There's no muddle-handedness.

  131. There's a disciplined lifestyle.

  132. Look at verse 17.

  133. There's no hangovers.

  134. Alcohol confuses the brain.

  135. But the Spirit-filled person understands what the will of the Lord is.

  136. He's not muddling in his thinking.

  137. Or look at verse 19.

  138. This is what a Spirit-filled church looks like.

  139. I don't know if you've ever been in town where the pubs were empty.

  140. It doesn't happen.

  141. It happens so much in Ealing.

  142. But growing up in South Wales,

  143. you'd be in town when the pubs were closing.

  144. It used to be at 11 o'clock.

  145. And it's the exact opposite of verse 19.

  146. And so in church, we sing to one another,

  147. not drunken songs,

  148. not sluried speech,

  149. but we speak to one another

  150. and we sing to one another

  151. in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs.

  152. And that's what a Spirit-filled church looks like.

  153. You notice it in funerals particularly.

  154. I've seen loads of funerals.

  155. It's the sharpest contrast in the world.

  156. You take the funeral of a Christian and a non-Christian.

  157. And if you have to go to the crematorium

  158. where there are no Christians present

  159. and you have to press the button

  160. and the singing comes on over the CD

  161. and I am the only one singing,

  162. it's a pretty miserable affair.

  163. It drags you down.

  164. But you go into a Christian funeral.

  165. You go to the funeral of Tom Chapman,

  166. the minister of Surrey Chapel,

  167. where the church will be full

  168. and it might be a very tragic death

  169. in very tragic circumstances.

  170. But the singing of a Christian funeral lifts the Spirit.

  171. You've experienced that.

  172. There's such a contrast.

  173. Between the drunken songs

  174. and the Spirit-filled singing of God's people.

  175. And so look at this.

  176. You see, amongst the people of God,

  177. there's no staggering around.

  178. There's no staggering gate.

  179. There's no wasted days.

  180. There's no muddled heads.

  181. And raucous laughter and discordant songs.

  182. And verse 20, there's no regrets.

  183. For the drunk, there's always the morning after,

  184. the night before.

  185. There's the hangover,

  186. the hazy memory of what's been said and done.

  187. You're not quite sure,

  188. but the Christian,

  189. the man or the woman who's under the influence

  190. of the Holy Spirit,

  191. has no regrets.

  192. Verse 20,

  193. they give thanks always.

  194. And for everything to God the Father

  195. in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  196. That's the Christian life.

  197. That is the life controlled by the Holy Spirit.

  198. It is always giving thanks.

  199. For everything.

  200. Let me give you an example of this.

  201. I read this week of a Korean businessman.

  202. The man was in his 50s.

  203. He was obviously very unwell.

  204. He stood up to give his testimony.

  205. And this was his testimony

  206. before a crowd of 27,000 people.

  207. He said,

  208. I'd like to thank my friend.

  209. His speech was unclear.

  210. He could only just stand.

  211. He was a wreck, this man.

  212. He obviously had health problems.

  213. And he said,

  214. I'd like to thank my friend Parkinson

  215. for introducing me to Jesus.

  216. And he wasn't talking about Michael Parkinson.

  217. That isn't a superficial

  218. praise God whatever happens.

  219. No, that is a deep thankfulness.

  220. Isn't that?

  221. That is the Spirit's work.

  222. When things are not going right for you,

  223. always giving thanks for everything.

  224. No regrets because God is in control.

  225. The Spirit is at work.

  226. And no drunken brawls either.

  227. No bloody noses.

  228. No broken jaws.

  229. Instead, verse 21,

  230. submitting to one another

  231. out of reverence,

  232. of Christ.

  233. Isn't that what church life should be?

  234. It's always a sign

  235. of the Spirit being at work

  236. in church life.

  237. To put others first

  238. are not a me first attitude.

  239. It's not like kids,

  240. me, me, me first.

  241. So many churches are like that,

  242. isn't it?

  243. What can I get out of things?

  244. Staying away from church

  245. so people will chase you.

  246. But no one said,

  247. how can I serve the body

  248. submitting to one another?

  249. I could go on.

  250. No broken homes either

  251. because of the way the chapter continues.

  252. Verse 22 and 23.

  253. And we get examples,

  254. don't we,

  255. in the rest of Ephesians 5

  256. of what spiritfulness looks like

  257. in the home

  258. between husbands and wives,

  259. what it looks like

  260. between parents and kids,

  261. and what it looks like

  262. in the workplace.

  263. When the Spirit is in control,

  264. there's no broken homes,

  265. there's no domestic violence.

  266. There's no abused children.

  267. That's what the,

  268. what the chapter is telling us.

  269. It's such a difference,

  270. isn't it?

  271. It's such a contrast

  272. between being drunk with wine

  273. and being filled with the Spirit.

  274. It's a contrast,

  275. not a comparison,

  276. and it's sharp.

  277. And it's really worth

  278. meditating on that this week.

  279. To get a picture of what it means

  280. to come under the influence

  281. of the Holy Spirit.

  282. But the main point

  283. I want to make to you tonight

  284. is the command

  285. to do not get drunk on wine

  286. which leads into debauchery.

  287. and say,

  288. here's the positive command.

  289. Instead,

  290. be filled with the Spirit.

  291. And I want you to see

  292. it's not so much

  293. of an experience

  294. as a command.

  295. Listen to this testimony.

  296. We were in a constant

  297. state of worship.

  298. They were the happiest days

  299. of my life.

  300. We were floating,

  301. swimming in the feeling

  302. that we were about

  303. to enter eternity.

  304. We had no doubts.

  305. Does that sound like

  306. somebody

  307. who is filled

  308. with the Spirit?

  309. They are the words

  310. of a Muslim suicide bomber

  311. who failed in his mission

  312. when the bomb didn't explode.

  313. He'd been taught

  314. that the first drop of blood

  315. to be shed during jihad

  316. would wash away

  317. his sins instantaneously.

  318. And he would face

  319. no reckoning

  320. on the day of judgment.

  321. And he was high.

  322. High as a character

  323. on such an experience.

  324. But it sounds very similar,

  325. doesn't it,

  326. the way some Christians talk?

  327. Is that what Paul means

  328. when he says

  329. be filled with the Holy Spirit?

  330. Now it's interesting

  331. that there are different words

  332. used in Acts and Ephesians.

  333. And we don't always

  334. appreciate that.

  335. The Eskimo

  336. has 47 different words

  337. in their language

  338. for snow.

  339. When it snows,

  340. it doesn't mean

  341. it's snow

  342. in Eskimo land.

  343. It snows

  344. in lots of different ways.

  345. And for us,

  346. it's just white and cold

  347. is that snow.

  348. But for the Eskimo,

  349. there are all these

  350. different ways

  351. of understanding

  352. what snow is.

  353. So for example,

  354. they might have a word,

  355. let's call the word

  356. fluff fluff.

  357. Which means,

  358. you know,

  359. that kind of really

  360. light,

  361. powdery kind of snow

  362. that floats

  363. softly to earth.

  364. You know?

  365. Christmas card snow.

  366. Generally covers everything

  367. with a pristine

  368. 12-inch blanket

  369. of dazzling white.

  370. It's perfect

  371. for photographs.

  372. Or they might have

  373. another word

  374. for snow

  375. called

  376. screaming freezer.

  377. which means,

  378. you know,

  379. the bitter kind of snow.

  380. The driven,

  381. horizontal,

  382. freeze your eyebrows

  383. off kind of stuff.

  384. That howls for days

  385. and buries everything

  386. on the suffocating

  387. avalanche of white death.

  388. Do you see the difference?

  389. You might say,

  390. it's snowing today.

  391. But you need to know

  392. the difference

  393. between the two.

  394. The words you're going

  395. to use

  396. if you're going to

  397. go out on it.

  398. Isn't it?

  399. And so when the Bible

  400. speaks about being

  401. filled with the Spirit,

  402. it does use

  403. two different words

  404. to describe it.

  405. There are two words.

  406. And just because

  407. Gethin works for us

  408. everything,

  409. so I'm starting to use

  410. Greek lots.

  411. It's not.

  412. I've just read

  413. Don the Cloud.

  414. Alright?

  415. One word is

  416. pluroo.

  417. Pluroo.

  418. And the other word

  419. is pimpleni.

  420. They're different words.

  421. of being filled

  422. with the Spirit.

  423. In the Acts of the Apostles,

  424. when it describes

  425. the church being

  426. filled with the Holy Spirit,

  427. the word is

  428. the pimpleni word.

  429. But when Paul speaks

  430. here in Ephesians

  431. of being filled

  432. with the Spirit,

  433. he uses

  434. the pluroo word,

  435. which is a different word.

  436. And it carries

  437. a different sort

  438. of nuance to it.

  439. In the Acts of the Apostles,

  440. it was a dramatic

  441. coming down

  442. of the Spirit.

  443. Narrative

  444. is not

  445. normative.

  446. What I mean by that

  447. is the book of Acts

  448. is a distinct time

  449. in redemptive history.

  450. We mustn't look

  451. at the book of Acts

  452. and think,

  453. oh, I tell you what,

  454. Peter had a handkerchief

  455. he sent around the place

  456. to heal people.

  457. Poor Levy,

  458. let's get his handkerchief

  459. and set that around.

  460. That's not what it's like.

  461. And the words did

  462. all kind of

  463. dramatic things.

  464. And the word

  465. that is used there

  466. is complaining.

  467. And people were empowered

  468. for particular acts

  469. of ministry

  470. and so on.

  471. But the word

  472. that Paul uses here

  473. is a different word

  474. altogether.

  475. Be filled with the Spirit,

  476. he says.

  477. Now let's think about

  478. what this means.

  479. What does Paul mean here?

  480. Four really

  481. simple points,

  482. four Ps.

  483. Number one,

  484. it's a passive command.

  485. It's a passive command.

  486. So,

  487. does he say

  488. fill

  489. with the Spirit?

  490. Or does he say

  491. be filled?

  492. There's a difference.

  493. A really important difference.

  494. Let's go back

  495. 40 years,

  496. you know,

  497. you wanted to fill up

  498. your car,

  499. you go to the garage

  500. and there's a little

  501. man or woman

  502. who walks out

  503. from the little booth

  504. in the garage

  505. and you don't even

  506. have to get out

  507. of your car

  508. and you wind

  509. your window down

  510. and you say

  511. fill her up,

  512. please.

  513. You sit in your car

  514. and somebody

  515. would fill

  516. your petrol tank

  517. for you.

  518. It would be wonderful,

  519. wouldn't it?

  520. Those days are gone.

  521. It would do itself now.

  522. But in those days

  523. it was filled

  524. for you.

  525. Well,

  526. it is the Holy Spirit

  527. who fills you.

  528. He is the one

  529. who does the filling.

  530. Paul is not saying

  531. to you tonight

  532. fill yourself.

  533. He is saying

  534. be filled.

  535. Can you see the difference?

  536. Let me try and illustrate it

  537. again in another way.

  538. There is a command

  539. in the Bible

  540. to love.

  541. If you are a Christian

  542. you are to love

  543. your fellow Christians.

  544. You are to love

  545. your enemies.

  546. And so on.

  547. That is a command

  548. for something

  549. for you to do.

  550. But if I say to you

  551. be loved

  552. that is a different

  553. command, isn't it?

  554. That is a passive

  555. command.

  556. That means there has

  557. to be someone

  558. out there

  559. who is going

  560. to love you.

  561. And you have to be

  562. open to that love

  563. and to receive

  564. that love.

  565. To be prepared

  566. to be on the

  567. receiving end of it.

  568. And that is what

  569. Paul is saying here

  570. about the Holy Spirit.

  571. He is not saying

  572. do this

  573. and do that.

  574. Do this

  575. and do that.

  576. Press this button.

  577. Go to this meeting.

  578. Attend that conference.

  579. And hey,

  580. presto,

  581. you will have an

  582. experience of the

  583. Holy Spirit.

  584. That's not what he's

  585. saying.

  586. He's saying be filled

  587. with the Spirit.

  588. Be open

  589. to the Holy Spirit

  590. taking control

  591. of your life.

  592. That's what he's

  593. saying.

  594. To be on the

  595. receiving end.

  596. It is passive.

  597. And so I want to

  598. ask you and myself

  599. and us as a church,

  600. how open are we

  601. to the Holy Spirit?

  602. How willing are we

  603. for the Holy Spirit

  604. to take over

  605. our day-to-day

  606. lives?

  607. How much do we want

  608. that to happen?

  609. Jesus said in the

  610. Beatitudes,

  611. he said,

  612. Blessed are those

  613. who hunger and

  614. thirst for they

  615. shall be filled.

  616. Those who hunger.

  617. One of the things

  618. I began to pray for

  619. us as a congregation

  620. more than anything

  621. else is we would

  622. be hungry.

  623. And we would be

  624. thirsty.

  625. Blessed are those

  626. who hunger and

  627. thirst.

  628. So isn't it

  629. true,

  630. as A.W.

  631. Tozer said

  632. somewhere,

  633. that everyone is

  634. as full as they

  635. want to be.

  636. Everyone is as

  637. full as they want

  638. to be.

  639. He uses this

  640. illustration,

  641. he says,

  642. you see a

  643. Mercedes-Benz

  644. or a BMW

  645. and you want

  646. that.

  647. You see the

  648. pro-shirt or you

  649. watch the advert

  650. and you dream

  651. about having a

  652. Mercedes or a

  653. BMW.

  654. And then you

  655. see the cost

  656. or the price.

  657. And you forget

  658. about it,

  659. don't you?

  660. I'd love a

  661. MacBook,

  662. you know,

  663. an Apple MacBook.

  664. And occasionally

  665. I dream about it.

  666. And I see the

  667. cost.

  668. And you forget

  669. about it,

  670. don't you?

  671. Any sane person

  672. would forget

  673. about it.

  674. I don't want it

  675. that much.

  676. Do I?

  677. If I wanted it

  678. that much,

  679. I'd make the

  680. sacrifice,

  681. I'd make it

  682. happen,

  683. but I don't.

  684. I'm not willing

  685. to make the

  686. sacrifices to pay

  687. the price to

  688. have it.

  689. It's probably

  690. a good thing.

  691. But the

  692. question is,

  693. how badly do

  694. you want to

  695. be filled

  696. with the

  697. Holy Spirit?

  698. And so many

  699. of us

  700. are Christians,

  701. we know the

  702. jargon,

  703. we know what

  704. we're supposed

  705. to say,

  706. but do we

  707. really want

  708. the Holy

  709. Spirit to

  710. take control

  711. of our

  712. lives?

  713. Do we

  714. want it as

  715. badly as we

  716. think we

  717. do?

  718. Are we

  719. prepared to

  720. pay the

  721. cost of

  722. that?

  723. Because there

  724. is a cost

  725. to it.

  726. We want

  727. it,

  728. but do we

  729. want it

  730. that much?

  731. And if we

  732. don't want it

  733. that much,

  734. are we

  735. going to

  736. settle for

  737. getting away

  738. with the

  739. bare minimum

  740. of what we

  741. can get away

  742. with and

  743. still be

  744. thought of

  745. as Christians?

  746. That is not

  747. being filled

  748. with the

  749. Spirit.

  750. You see what I'm

  751. trying to say?

  752. I'm saying it

  753. imperfectly, but

  754. we're as full

  755. as we want

  756. to be.

  757. Not as full

  758. as we think

  759. we want to

  760. be, but as

  761. full as we

  762. really want

  763. to be.

  764. And Paul

  765. says, be

  766. filled.

  767. It's a

  768. passive

  769. command.

  770. Allow the

  771. Spirit to

  772. fill you,

  773. he's saying.

  774. It's passive

  775. and it's

  776. plural.

  777. Do you

  778. notice it's

  779. a corporate

  780. command, it's

  781. a command

  782. for the

  783. whole church.

  784. Americans

  785. would say,

  786. yawl, be

  787. filled with

  788. the Spirit

  789. yawl.

  790. That is

  791. something that

  792. happens when

  793. Christians get

  794. together.

  795. The

  796. command is a

  797. plural command

  798. that's addressed

  799. to all the

  800. Christians.

  801. You have to

  802. see it in

  803. that context,

  804. it's when

  805. Christians get

  806. together,

  807. it's when

  808. Christians gather

  809. in the name

  810. of Christ.

  811. That is what

  812. this little

  813. paragraph is

  814. describing.

  815. It's something

  816. that takes

  817. place in the

  818. context of

  819. worship and

  820. fellowship.

  821. You are

  822. making melody

  823. in your

  824. heart to

  825. the Lord

  826. and you're

  827. singing

  828. chalms and

  829. hymns and

  830. spiritual songs

  831. to one

  832. another.

  833. And you

  834. see it in

  835. the context

  836. of the

  837. meeting for

  838. worship and

  839. fellowship,

  840. that people

  841. are filled

  842. with the

  843. Spirit.

  844. Now I

  845. think that's

  846. an important

  847. point.

  848. When they

  849. are submitting

  850. to one

  851. another out of

  852. reverence for

  853. Christ, it

  854. is in the

  855. context of

  856. Christians living

  857. together and

  858. worshiping

  859. together and

  860. fellowshiping

  861. together and

  862. speaking the

  863. Word of God

  864. to one

  865. another.

  866. It's in that

  867. context that

  868. the Spirit of

  869. God comes.

  870. It's what the

  871. old writers

  872. called the

  873. means of

  874. grace.

  875. Let the

  876. Spirit fill

  877. your hearts

  878. and lives

  879. protecting your

  880. imaginations.

  881. And if you

  882. want that to

  883. happen, you

  884. need to use

  885. the means of

  886. grace which

  887. God has

  888. given.

  889. Use, as

  890. someone has

  891. said, all

  892. the resources

  893. of the rich

  894. Christian

  895. tradition.

  896. It's poems,

  897. it's songs,

  898. it's liturgy

  899. to help you.

  900. This old

  901. preacher called

  902. Dr.

  903. Joeet,

  904. Joeet was a

  905. preacher in

  906. London and

  907. he tells him

  908. how he once

  909. went down to

  910. the coast of

  911. Tainmouth.

  912. He sat by

  913. an old

  914. sailor, a

  915. man who

  916. spent many

  917. years on a

  918. sailing vessel

  919. and he

  920. said, do you

  921. know anything

  922. about the

  923. wind?

  924. He said, yes,

  925. I know a lot

  926. about the

  927. wind.

  928. Well, will

  929. you explain

  930. to me the

  931. phenomenon of

  932. the wind?

  933. I don't know

  934. what you mean.

  935. How do you

  936. explain the

  937. wind?

  938. What do you

  939. know about

  940. it?

  941. Well, actually,

  942. I don't know

  943. anything about

  944. the wind.

  945. But I know

  946. wind.

  947. I can hoist

  948. the sail.

  949. And I think

  950. that's the

  951. point, is it?

  952. Do you remember

  953. what Jesus said

  954. to Nicodemus?

  955. He spoke about

  956. the Holy Spirit

  957. and he says,

  958. the wind blows

  959. where it wills,

  960. you hear the

  961. sound of it,

  962. but you can't

  963. tell where it

  964. comes from or

  965. where it's

  966. going to.

  967. It's a mystery,

  968. you can't

  969. control the

  970. wind.

  971. We can't

  972. control the

  973. Holy Spirit.

  974. we can't

  975. say the

  976. Holy Spirit

  977. is coming

  978. down now

  979. in our

  980. meetings.

  981. That is

  982. horrible when

  983. you hear

  984. people talk

  985. like that.

  986. You can't

  987. trick your

  988. fingers and

  989. say,

  990. wind,

  991. come here.

  992. You can't

  993. say,

  994. Holy Spirit,

  995. come down

  996. at this point

  997. in the

  998. service when

  999. the musicians

  1000. begin to

  1001. play the

  1002. softly music

  1003. in the

  1004. background,

  1005. the lights

  1006. go down and

  1007. everybody moves

  1008. to the front.

  1009. That is

  1010. blasphemous

  1011. nonsense.

  1012. You cannot

  1013. control the

  1014. Holy Spirit.

  1015. it.

  1016. The wind

  1017. blows where

  1018. it wills,

  1019. but you

  1020. can hoist

  1021. a sail.

  1022. You can

  1023. put yourself

  1024. in the

  1025. way of

  1026. the Spirit.

  1027. Under the

  1028. means of

  1029. grace.

  1030. You can

  1031. gather with

  1032. God's

  1033. people.

  1034. You can

  1035. put yourself

  1036. under the

  1037. preaching of

  1038. the words.

  1039. You can

  1040. come to

  1041. the Lord's

  1042. table.

  1043. You can

  1044. be at the

  1045. gathering of

  1046. God's people

  1047. to pray.

  1048. you can

  1049. sing songs

  1050. and hymns

  1051. and spiritual

  1052. songs and

  1053. catch up

  1054. with one

  1055. another and

  1056. speak God's

  1057. word to

  1058. one another

  1059. and submit

  1060. to one

  1061. another out of

  1062. reverence of

  1063. Christ and

  1064. the wind

  1065. will blow.

  1066. And you

  1067. will find

  1068. that there's

  1069. wind in

  1070. your sails

  1071. in the

  1072. Christian

  1073. life and

  1074. so make

  1075. use.

  1076. You want

  1077. the wind

  1078. in your

  1079. sails?

  1080. Make use

  1081. of the

  1082. means of

  1083. grace.

  1084. Gather

  1085. with God's

  1086. people.

  1087. It's a

  1088. passive

  1089. command.

  1090. It's a

  1091. plural

  1092. command.

  1093. It's a

  1094. present

  1095. continuous

  1096. command.

  1097. It's a

  1098. present

  1099. continuous

  1100. command.

  1101. Can you

  1102. see it?

  1103. Literally

  1104. go on

  1105. being filled

  1106. with the

  1107. Holy Spirit.

  1108. That's what

  1109. it is.

  1110. It's not a

  1111. once and

  1112. for all

  1113. experience.

  1114. Now how

  1115. do you go

  1116. on being

  1117. filled?

  1118. How do

  1119. you go

  1120. on in

  1121. the

  1122. Christian

  1123. life being

  1124. filled?

  1125. How do

  1126. you go

  1127. on with

  1128. the wind

  1129. in your

  1130. sails?

  1131. Let me

  1132. say two

  1133. things.

  1134. And the

  1135. New

  1136. Testament

  1137. really says

  1138. two things

  1139. about this

  1140. and it

  1141. couches

  1142. them both

  1143. in the

  1144. negative.

  1145. Just go

  1146. back in

  1147. the previous

  1148. chapter to

  1149. chapters 4

  1150. and 5

  1151. in verse

  1152. 30 of

  1153. chapter 4.

  1154. Verse 30

  1155. chapter 4.

  1156. First half

  1157. of Ephesians

  1158. Paul is

  1159. broadly

  1160. describing the

  1161. gospel.

  1162. The second

  1163. half of

  1164. Ephesians

  1165. he's

  1166. describing

  1167. Christian

  1168. lifestyle.

  1169. And he's

  1170. explained the

  1171. gospel but

  1172. now he's

  1173. going to

  1174. show you

  1175. how to

  1176. live out

  1177. the

  1178. gospel.

  1179. And so

  1180. in chapter

  1181. 4 verse

  1182. 30 he

  1183. says do

  1184. not grieve

  1185. the Holy

  1186. Spirit of

  1187. God

  1188. with whom

  1189. he was

  1190. sealed for

  1191. the day

  1192. of redemption.

  1193. Do not

  1194. grieve the

  1195. Spirit.

  1196. Let me

  1197. illustrate this.

  1198. Jeff Thomas

  1199. my friend

  1200. let me

  1201. quote you.

  1202. He puts

  1203. it so well

  1204. he says our

  1205. relationship with

  1206. the Holy

  1207. Spirit is

  1208. not like your

  1209. relationship with

  1210. a speed

  1211. camera.

  1212. Don't you

  1213. hate speed

  1214. cameras?

  1215. That's my

  1216. words not

  1217. Jeff Thomas's.

  1218. That camera is

  1219. not grieved if

  1220. you do 35

  1221. mile per

  1222. hour in a

  1223. 30 mile per

  1224. hour zone.

  1225. It might be

  1226. situated in the

  1227. most beautiful

  1228. valley in

  1229. Wales but it

  1230. never takes

  1231. photographs of

  1232. sunsets or

  1233. lakes or

  1234. swans flying

  1235. across the

  1236. fields.

  1237. It simply

  1238. snaps your

  1239. car breaking

  1240. the speed

  1241. limit.

  1242. It is a

  1243. pre-programmed

  1244. machine and

  1245. he says your

  1246. relationship with

  1247. the Holy

  1248. Spirit is not

  1249. like that.

  1250. Then he goes

  1251. on to use

  1252. another

  1253. illustration.

  1254. He says your

  1255. relationship with

  1256. the Holy

  1257. Spirit is not

  1258. like your

  1259. relationship with

  1260. a cash

  1261. dispenser.

  1262. You feed in

  1263. your card,

  1264. you punch in

  1265. your number and

  1266. out comes the

  1267. money.

  1268. That's all it

  1269. does.

  1270. You can be

  1271. in the

  1272. foulest of

  1273. moods imaginable.

  1274. You can be

  1275. muttering and

  1276. complaining under

  1277. your breath and

  1278. shouting at your

  1279. children to

  1280. stay still.

  1281. But the cash

  1282. point is utterly

  1283. indifferent.

  1284. It will simply

  1285. give you what you

  1286. want if you

  1287. sufficient credit.

  1288. My relationship

  1289. with the cash

  1290. point is inert.

  1291. It's not like

  1292. that with the

  1293. Spirit.

  1294. He is a

  1295. living person.

  1296. We saw that in

  1297. the first thought,

  1298. didn't we?

  1299. That he is a

  1300. loving person who

  1301. grounds and

  1302. loves and

  1303. prays who can

  1304. be grieved

  1305. and blesses.

  1306. And if I

  1307. am not

  1308. maturing and

  1309. not loving and

  1310. not praying and

  1311. not witnessing and

  1312. not worshipping that I

  1313. should, then the

1314. fault does not lie in

  1315. the breakdown of the

  1316. divine machinery.

1317. It lies in our own

  1318. failure to maintain a

  1319. growing living

  1320. relationship with the

  1321. Lord who is the

  1322. Spirit.

  1323. Spirit.

  1324. Grieve not the

  1325. Spirit.

  1326. You know when

  1327. you've offended

  1328. your wife, don't

  1329. you?

  1330. You know when

  1331. you've offended

  1332. your mum or your

  1333. dad.

  1334. You know when

  1335. you've offended

  1336. your friends,

  1337. don't you?

  1338. There's a

  1339. cooling off in

  1340. the relationship.

  1341. There's a

  1342. distance.

  1343. There's an

  1344. atmosphere.

  1345. Well, it's

  1346. time to put it

  1347. right.

  1348. And Paul is

  1349. saying, go on

  1350. being filled with

  1351. the Spirit.

  1352. Let your

  1353. relationship with

  1354. Jesus, be the

  1355. same by the

  1356. Holy Spirit.

  1357. Be sensitive to

  1358. what offends

  1359. him.

  1360. Don't have a

  1361. mechanistic view

  1362. of the Christian

  1363. life where we

  1364. plug into this

  1365. or we plug into

  1366. that.

  1367. And then we'll

  1368. have the power.

  1369. Or we think, I

  1370. am justified.

  1371. And so it's

  1372. just all right.

  1373. And you kind

  1374. of have a

  1375. reformed

  1376. mechanistic view

  1377. of the Christian

  1378. life.

  1379. No, it's a

  1380. relationship.

  1381. With Jesus

  1382. through the

  1383. Holy Spirit.

  1384. Don't grieve

  1385. this gracious

  1386. willing guest

  1387. who's come to

  1388. live in your

  1389. life.

  1390. Don't offend

  1391. him.

  1392. And then the

  1393. other thing

  1394. the New

  1395. Testament says

  1396. is do not

  1397. quench the

  1398. Spirit.

  1399. 1 Thessalonians

  1400. 5.19

  1401. Do not put

  1402. on the

  1403. Spirit's

  1404. fire.

  1405. Do not

  1406. treat

  1407. prophecies

  1408. with contempt.

  1409. He puts

  1410. those things

  1411. together.

  1412. They're related.

  1413. You ever

  1414. been in a

  1415. situation, maybe

  1416. you've been

  1417. in a house

  1418. group, or

  1419. maybe it's

  1420. been outside

  1421. the church

  1422. altogether,

  1423. at work,

  1424. and you've

  1425. said something

  1426. in the Bible

  1427. study, and

  1428. somebody else

  1429. has taken a

  1430. massive jug of

  1431. cold water and

  1432. poured it on

  1433. it.

  1434. It's very

  1435. difficult, isn't

  1436. it?

  1437. You don't want to

  1438. say anything ever

  1439. again when that

  1440. happens.

  1441. You get terrified

  1442. the next time

  1443. there's a question

  1444. asked.

  1445. It's so

  1446. discouraging.

  1447. We need to be

  1448. careful, don't we,

  1449. when we speak to

  1450. each other.

  1451. in our Bible

  1452. studies or at

  1453. church on a

  1454. Sunday, that we

  1455. don't pour

  1456. cold water on

  1457. someone else's

  1458. contribution.

  1459. But do you

  1460. see what Paul

  1461. is saying?

  1462. Paul is saying

  1463. we can do

  1464. that with the

  1465. Holy Spirit.

  1466. Don't despise

  1467. prophecies.

  1468. What is

  1469. prophecy?

  1470. There's all

  1471. sorts of

  1472. madness about

  1473. what is

  1474. prophecy.

  1475. Prophecy is

  1476. speaking the

  1477. word of God.

  1478. That's what I'm

  1479. doing now.

  1480. When you share

  1481. the Bible with

  1482. someone, you are

  1483. speaking the

  1484. word of God to

  1485. them.

  1486. Don't despise

  1487. when somebody

  1488. is sharing the

  1489. word of God

  1490. with you.

  1491. Don't despise

  1492. prophecies because

  1493. you might be

  1494. pouring cold

  1495. water on the

  1496. Holy Spirit.

  1497. And if we do

  1498. that, well it's

  1499. no wonder, is it,

  1500. that our spiritual

  1501. ardour and

  1502. fervency dampens

  1503. down.

  1504. Don't quench

  1505. the Spirit's

  1506. fire.

  1507. So there's a

  1508. contrast or a

  1509. comparison.

  1510. It's a

  1511. command, it's a

  1512. passive command, a

  1513. plural command, a

  1514. present continuous

  1515. command.

  1516. Go on being

  1517. filled with the

  1518. Spirit.

  1519. If you want to

  1520. come under the

  1521. influence of the

  1522. Holy Spirit, then

  1523. you go to the

  1524. Bible, not

  1525. to the bottle.

  1526. It's very

  1527. interesting, isn't

  1528. it?

  1529. I'm running out

  1530. of time, but it's

  1531. really interesting.

  1532. Colossians chapter

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  1533. 3, it's really

  1534. exactly the same

  1535. passage.

  1536. But instead, Paul

  1537. says there, instead

  1538. of saying being

  1539. filled with the

  1540. Spirit, do you

  1541. remember what he

  1542. says?

  1543. He says, let the

  1544. word of God dwell

  1545. in you richly with

  1546. psalms and hymns and

  1547. spiritual songs.

  1548. It's really

  1549. fascinating.

  1550. Instead of being

  1551. filled with the

  1552. Spirit, Ephesians,

  1553. he tells the

  1554. Colossians, let the

  1555. word of Christ dwell

  1556. in you richly.

  1557. See what he's

  1558. doing as you

  1559. compare those two

  1560. passages?

  1561. He's saying if you

  1562. want to come under

  1563. the influence of the

  1564. Holy Spirit, if you

1565. want the Holy Spirit to

1566. come to you, then go to

  1567. the Bible.

  1568. That's what you've got.

  1569. And not to the

  1570. bottle.

  1571. Let the word of

  1572. Christ enrich.

1573. That's why we love the

  1574. Bible.

  1575. Let it furnish your

  1576. meetings.

  1577. Let it enrich your

  1578. conversations.

  1579. You cannot separate the

  1580. Bible from the Holy

  1581. Spirit.

1582. He is the author of

  1583. Scripture.

1584. And if you want to be

  1585. controlled by a person,

1586. we might say, he's full

  1587. of so-and-so.

  1588. He's always quoting

  1589. him.

  1590. He's reading his books.

  1591. He's reading his

  1592. articles.

  1593. He's influencing his

  1594. thinking.

1595. And if you want to be

1596. full of the Spirit, he is

1597. not a power to plug into

  1598. or anything like that.

  1599. He's not a cash machine to

  1600. dispense power.

1601. If you want to be filled

  1602. with this person, the

  1603. third person of the

  1604. blessed Trinity, then you

1605. need to be reading what

  1606. he's written.

1607. And we ought to be

  1608. thinking his thoughts

  1609. after him.

  1610. So it's passive, it's

  1611. plural, it's present

  1612. continuous, and it's

  1613. powerful.

1614. Let me end on this

  1615. point.

  1616. What does the Holy

  1617. Spirit fill us with?

  1618. What does it mean?

  1619. Do you remember that

  1620. episode in Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

1621. 6, in the year that

  1622. King Uzziah died?

1623. I went into the temple

1624. and I saw the Lord.

1625. John tells us in 1241

1626. that it was Jesus he

  1627. saw.

  1628. It's a great one for

  1629. children witnesses.

  1630. They've missed it.

  1631. It's very clear in

  1632. John 1241.

  1633. But the Lord whom

  1634. Isaiah saw in Isaiah

  1635. 6 was Jesus.

  1636. And that makes sense

  1637. to me because you

  1638. cannot see God

  1639. except through Jesus.

  1640. And God makes

  1641. himself known in

  1642. Jesus.

1643. And in the year that

  1644. King Uzziah died, I

1645. saw the Lord high and

  1646. lifted up.

1647. On the train of his

  1648. robe filled the

  1649. temple.

  1650. And above him were

  1651. the seraph, each with

  1652. six wings, with two

  1653. wings.

  1654. And they covered their

  1655. faces, and with two

  1656. they covered with

  1657. their feet.

  1658. And with two they

  1659. were flying and

  1660. they called out to

  1661. one another, holy,

  1662. holy, holy is the

  1663. Lord God almighty.

  1664. The whole earth is

  1665. full of his glory.

  1666. And that's what we're

  1667. talking about.

  1668. God is in his

  1669. temple.

  1670. His glory fills the

  1671. place of his

  1672. fullness.

  1673. That we have all

  1674. received.

1675. And so go on being

  1676. filled with the

  1677. spirit says Paul.

  1678. Let's pray.

  1679. Let's pray.

  1680. Let's pray.
