  1. If you have a Bible before you then please turn to Luke chapter 16.

    Luke 16 chapter mention

  2. As you do so let me say for a moment what a delight it's been for me to be with you this weekend.

  3. Paul and Claire have welcomed me so warmly and open heartedly into their home and that's been a delight.

  4. And it's been a joy for me to be here and to be part of a congregation that is God focused, Christ honoring and seeking in all that it does to live its life out of the word of God.

  5. And I do trust that the Lord will continue to prosper your life, keep you united in heart, in mind, in soul and spirit and make you beyond all your asking a beacon of hope and light not only in healing but far beyond.

  6. This is one of the most striking of Jesus' parables.

  7. He says,

  8. The sons of this world or this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than the sons of light.

  9. And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon,

  10. so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.

  11. Make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous mammon.

  12. It's a remarkable fact and probably I think to most people a surprising fact to notice that Luke devotes so much space

  13. in his gospel account of the Lord Jesus Christ to the subject of money and possessions.

  14. You hardly need to read far into the gospel of Luke to find yourself confronted by repeated teaching from the mouth of the Lord Jesus Christ

  15. concerning money and wealth.

  16. It's as if the Lord is saying to those who are beginning to follow him,

  17. how you use the resources God has given you in this life is a test run for eternity.

  18. Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

  19. The Lord Jesus speaks very practically about the nature of the Christian life.

  20. The Christian life, the life that is lived in union with him,

  21. the life that is lived out of union with Jesus Christ,

  22. is a life, said Jesus, that will use the resources given to it by God wisely and well.

  23. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

  24. It's a very striking parable.

  25. The ESV begins there,

  26. Jesus said to his disciples there was a rich man who had a manager.

  27. And that's a very prosaic translation.

  28. Really it's the word steward.

  29. Not someone who simply managed the property of his master,

  30. but someone who had oversight over his house.

  31. He had tremendous responsibilities.

  32. He was someone who had been entrusted with great responsibilities.

  33. And Jesus speaks about this man who is unmasked.

  34. We are not told how he is unmasked, but he was unmasked.

  35. And his master said to him,

  36. You have been wasting my possessions.

  37. And it's interesting that Jesus tells this parable immediately after

  38. the parable, the very well-known parable of the prodigal son.

  39. Or of the prodigal son and the elder brother.

  40. If you look down to chapter 15 verse 13,

  41. you will see the Lord saying that this younger son had gathered all he had,

  42. took it on a journey into a far country,

  43. and there he squandered his property.

  44. The property given to him by his father.

  45. He squandered it, he wasted it.

  46. Now the same verb is used.

  47. The prodigal son squanders and wastes the resources given to him by his father publicly and flagrantly.

  48. But here is someone else who has squandered, wasted the possessions of his master.

  49. But he has not done it publicly, flagrantly.

  50. He's done it quietly, or so he thought.

  51. He did it surreptitiously.

  52. And I've little doubt that Jesus is expecting, or I should say Luke is expecting us as he juxtaposes

  53. these two units of teaching to be confronted by this,

  54. that we can be people who squander the privileges given to us by God publicly, openly, flagrantly,

  55. or we can be people who squander what God has given to us in a hidden way, less obvious.

  56. Maybe no one knows that we are misusing, ill-treating, wasting, squandering

  57. the good things that God has given to us.

  58. And Jesus is expecting us, I'm in no doubt, to grasp this, that God sees and God knows.

  59. If we are someone squandering, wasting, abusing the privileges and the resources that he has entrusted to us.

  60. And this man is exposed, and his master says to him,

  61. you need to give an account, your time is up.

  62. I'm going to dismiss you.

  63. And this steward is deeply and profoundly upset.

  64. What shall I do, he says, since my master is taking the stewardship away from me?

  65. I'm not strong enough to dig, I'm ashamed to beg.

  66. What am I going to do?

  67. And the Greek text almost has it like a light bulb moment.

  68. Ah, ah, I know what I'll do.

  69. I've got it, he says, I've got it.

  70. When I'm removed from my stewardship,

  71. so that people will receive me into their houses.

  72. Notice that phrase, who will receive me into their houses.

  73. Because later on in verse 9, Jesus will speak about being received into the eternal dwellings.

  74. I know what I'll do, so that I won't be a pariah.

  75. I'll be received into their houses.

  76. And so he calls his master's debtors.

  77. What do you owe my master?

  78. Oh, a hundred measures of oil.

  79. Quickly, write fifty.

  80. Oh, fine, yes.

  81. To someone else, what do you owe?

  82. I owe eighteen.

  83. Cut it down.

  84. Remove it.

  85. Cut it by a quarter.

  86. Great.

  87. He's continuing to defraud his master.

  88. He is a dishonest steward.

  89. He is squandering,

  90. continuing to squander

  91. the resources of his master.

  92. But what does the master do

  93. when he hears about this?

  94. Verse 6

  95. The master commended

  96. the dishonest steward.

  97. Good for you.

  98. Good for you.

  99. You think,

  100. Lord,

  101. are you commending his dishonesty?

  102. Don't be stupid.

  103. Jesus would have said,

  104. commending his dishonesty?

  105. I'm the one who is the truth.

  106. Well,

  107. what are you saying?

  108. The master doesn't commend

  109. the man's dishonesty,

  110. but he commends him

  111. for his shrewdness,

  112. his sagacity,

  113. his farsightedness.

  114. He's speaking after the manner of men.

  115. And here is the point

  116. Jesus is making

  117. and building up to.

  118. For,

  119. for,

  120. the sons of this age,

  121. the unbelievers

  122. of this passing world,

  123. are more shrewd,

  124. more farsighted,

  125. more sagacious

  126. in dealing with

  127. their own generation

  128. than the sons of light.

  129. He is,

  130. in a sense,

  131. rebuking his own disciples.

  132. He's using this

  133. dishonest steward

  134. as an illustration,

  135. not of the

  136. wisdom of dishonesty,

  137. but of saying to his disciples,

  138. even in his

  139. unrighteousness

  140. and wickedness,

  141. this man

  142. looked ahead.

  143. That's the thing.

  144. He looked ahead.

  145. He made preparations

  146. for the future.

  147. He was wicked.

  148. He was unrighteous.

  149. He was a defrauder.

  150. He was a thief.

  151. He was a deceiver.

  152. But in all of that,

  153. there was a shrewdness,

  154. an ungodly shrewdness,

  155. but a shrewdness.

  156. He looked ahead

  157. and he prepared

  158. for the future.

  159. And so Jesus says

  160. to his disciples,

  161. I tell you,

  162. and that's always

  163. a note

  164. for us to sit up

  165. and take something

  166. very significant

  167. to heart.

  168. I tell you,

  169. make friends

  170. for yourselves

  171. by means

  172. of unrighteous

  173. wealth.

  174. Now the word wealth,

  175. again,

  176. mammon is

  177. an Aramaic word.

  178. It's broader than wealth.

  179. Your possessions,

  180. your resources.

  181. Make friends

  182. for yourself

  183. by means of

  184. unrighteous

  185. money and resources

  186. so that when

  187. it fails,

  188. when it runs out,

  189. they,

  190. we'll come to the day

  191. in a moment,

  192. they may receive you

  193. into the eternal dwellings.

  194. first of all,

  195. what does Jesus mean

  196. by make friends

  197. of unrighteous wealth?

  198. Well,

  199. I think the Lord

  200. is not saying

  201. that possessions

  202. in and of themselves

  203. are unrighteous.

  204. Nowhere in the Bible

  205. do you find that.

  206. It's not money

  207. that is the root

  208. of all evil,

  209. 1 Timothy 6.

  210. It is the love

  211. of money.

  212. And Jesus

  213. is highlighting,

  214. I think,

  215. here the propensity

  216. of wealth

  217. in whatever form

  218. we possess it

  219. and possessions

  220. in whatever form

  221. we have them,

  222. the propensity

  223. for it to be used

  224. in an unrighteous way

  225. and to come to us

  226. from unrighteous sources.

  227. There's nothing

  228. untainted

  229. in a fallen world.

  230. And it's our calling

  231. to use the taintedness

  232. of a fallen world

  233. to the praise

  234. and glory of God

  235. as God enables us

  236. by his grace.

  237. And so Jesus

  238. is saying,

  239. make use,

  240. make friends,

  241. use this unrighteous

  242. wealth,

  243. possessions,

  244. use it wisely

  245. and well.

  246. Use it not

  247. for your own

  248. indulgence,

  249. but use it

  250. to spread

  251. the kingdom

  252. of God.

  253. And that's why

  254. he says,

  255. so that when it

  256. fails,

  257. they,

  258. they,

  259. may receive you

  260. into the eternal

  261. dwellings.

  262. who are the they?

  263. Well,

  264. there are some

  265. fine commentators

  266. who say,

  267. well,

  268. it's really a

  269. circumlocution

  270. for God.

  271. Those disciples

  272. who use it

  273. to use the

  274. resources that

  275. God has given

  276. to them wisely

  277. and well,

  278. not first for

  279. their own

  280. pleasure and

  281. indulgence,

  282. not that we

  283. are to be

  284. monastic in the

  285. way we live,

  286. God has given

  287. us all good

  288. things richly

  289. to enjoy,

  290. but for those

  291. who use the

  292. resources God

  293. has given them

  294. wisely and well

  295. for the extension

  296. of his kingdom,

  297. that good use,

  298. that wise use

  299. of money and

  300. resources,

  301. will be the

  302. means God

  303. will use of

  304. bringing others

  305. into his

  306. kingdom,

  307. of gathering

  308. others out

  309. of the dominion

  310. of darkness

  311. and bringing

  312. them into the

  313. kingdom of

  314. light,

  315. unbeknown to

  316. you perhaps,

  317. as you give

  318. your offerings

  319. here morning

  320. and evening,

  321. as you give

  322. generously,

  323. I would hope,

  324. and sacrificially,

  325. you just don't

  326. know what God

  327. might do,

  328. you just don't

  329. know what God

  330. might do,

  331. and I've little

  332. doubt that it's

  333. not so much God

  334. as a circumlocution

  335. that the Lord

  336. is highlighting

  337. by the word

  338. they,

  339. he is saying

  340. there will be

  341. people in the

  342. glory waiting

  343. to welcome you,

  344. waiting to

  345. welcome you,

  346. because your

  347. self-sacrificial

  348. giving of the

  349. resources God

  350. has entrusted

  351. to you as a

  352. steward,

  353. God used that

  354. to bring them

  355. into contact

  356. with the word

  357. of God,

  358. with a gospel

  359. tract,

  360. with a book,

  361. with an

  362. individual,

  363. with someone

  364. who was sent

  365. partly through

  366. your givings

  367. to the ends

  368. of the earth,

  369. to Kazakhstan,

  370. Uzbekistan,

  371. or dark as

  372. Glasgow,

  373. and you

  374. will not know

  375. until you go

  376. to the glory

  377. and someone

  378. will say,

  379. I'm here,

  380. brother,

  381. sister,

  382. because you

  383. selflessly

  384. denied yourself

  385. and shared

  386. your resources

  387. so generously

  388. and God

  389. used that

  390. in his

  391. mercy

  392. to bring me

  393. to himself.

  394. What a

  395. remarkable

  396. thing that

  397. would be,

  398. would it not,

  399. if you breathe

  400. your last

  401. breath in

  402. this life

  403. and the

  404. Lord brings

  405. you how

  406. it will

  407. please him

  408. to bring

  409. you into

  410. his nearer

  411. presence

  412. and you

  413. find there

  414. people you've

  415. never met

  416. before,

  417. you've never

  418. heard their

  419. name,

  420. you just

  421. have no idea

  422. who they are

  423. and they're

  424. there as it

  425. were to

  426. welcome you

  427. and you

  428. say,

  429. Lord,

  430. who are

  431. these people?

  432. Oh,

  433. they are the

  434. people that

  435. I brought

  436. to myself

  437. through you.

  438. Lord,

  439. I didn't

  440. know that.

  441. I didn't

  442. know that.

  443. That doesn't

  444. matter.

  445. You see,

  446. Jesus'

  447. parable here

  448. is sandwiched

  449. between the

  450. parable of

  451. the prodigal

  452. son who

  453. squanders

  454. his resources

  455. flagrantly,

  456. publicly,

  457. openly.

  458. and the

  459. chapter

  460. concludes

  461. with Jesus

  462. speaking about

  463. the parable

  464. of the rich

  465. man and

  466. Lazarus.

  467. And you

  468. know the

  469. story well.

  470. Lazarus is

  471. the poor

  472. beggar who

  473. sits at

  474. the rich

  475. man's

  476. gate.

  477. He's so

  478. poor and

  479. so benight

  480. that even

  481. the dogs

  482. lick his

  483. sores.

  484. And they

  485. both die.

  486. Lazarus

  487. goes to

  488. heaven,

  489. goes to

  490. Abram's

  491. bosom,

  492. a picturesque

  493. Hebraic way

  494. of speaking

  495. of the

  496. nearer

  497. presence of

  498. God.

  499. And the

  500. rich man

  501. goes to

  502. hell.

  503. And a

  504. little doubt

  505. as you

  506. stand far

  507. enough back

  508. in Luke's

  509. gospel,

  510. the Lord

  511. is saying

  512. what an

  513. opportunity

  514. this rich

  515. man had

  516. to use

  517. his resources

  518. to minister

  519. to this

  520. poor,

  521. benighted

  522. beggar at

  523. his gate.

  524. It doesn't

  525. need to be

  526. as dramatic

  527. as that.

  528. But I

  529. think the

  530. Lord is

  531. saying as

  532. we read

  533. through the

  534. sweep of

  535. Luke's

  536. gospel and

  537. as Luke

  538. juxtaposes

  539. under the

  540. inspiration of

  541. the Holy

  542. Spirit these

  543. various

  544. encounters.

  545. He was a

  546. man who

  547. had the

  548. opportunity

  549. to be

  550. welcomed by

  551. Lazarus.

  552. I've been

  553. waiting to

  554. welcome you.

  555. How kindly

  556. you dealt

  557. with me.

  558. How generously

  559. you cared

  560. for me.

  561. With what

  562. godly concern

  563. you lavished

  564. upon me.

  565. You opened

  566. wide not only

  567. your arms but

  568. your heart to

  569. me and

  570. god brought

  571. me into

  572. his kingdom

  573. through you

  574. and I'm

  575. here to

  576. welcome you.

  577. But the

  578. rich man with

  579. all the

  580. privileges given

  581. to him

  582. hoarded

  583. them.

  584. I've little

  585. doubt that

  586. the Lord

  587. Jesus is

  588. highlighting a

  589. very significant

  590. thing about

  591. authentic

  592. Christian

  593. discipleship.

  594. Authentic

  595. Christian

  596. discipleship

  597. is marked

  598. significantly

  599. by

  600. self-sacrificial

  601. giving.

  602. Think of the

  603. Lord Jesus

  604. Christ.

  605. Though he

  606. was rich yet

  607. for our

  608. sakes he

  609. became poor

  610. so that by

  611. his poverty

  612. we may

  613. become rich.

  614. And so

  615. the Lord

  616. goes on

  617. in verses

  618. 10 following

  619. to say

  620. one who

  621. is faithful

  622. in a very

  623. little is

  624. also faithful

  625. in much

  626. and one

  627. who is

  628. dishonest in a

  629. very little is

  630. dishonest in

  631. much.

  632. If then you

  633. have not been

  634. faithful in the

  635. unrighteous

  636. wealth, if you

  637. have not dealt

  638. wisely and well

  639. and generously

  640. and selflessly

  641. with the

  642. resources God

  643. has given

  644. you, who

  645. will entrust

  646. to you

  647. true riches?

  648. Now it's

  649. not I think

  650. easy precisely

  651. to know what

  652. our Lord means

  653. here but most

  654. likely he's

  655. saying do you

  656. think the true

  657. riches of God

  658. and of glory

  659. will ever be

  660. yours if you

  661. have not used

  662. wisely and

  663. well to his

  664. glory while in

  665. this life the

  666. little thing he

  667. has given you?

  668. Money and

  669. possessions are

  670. little things.

  671. They are little

  672. things.

  673. The moment you

  674. have them, the

  675. moment they

  676. began they were

  677. subject to the

  678. law of entropy,

  679. the second law

  680. of thermodynamics,

  681. they were on

  682. the road to

  683. destruction.

  684. You can't take

  685. anything with

  686. you.

  687. If you have

  688. not been faithful

  689. in that which

  690. is another's,

  691. who will give

  692. you that which

  693. is your own?

  694. No servant

  695. can serve two

  696. masters.

  697. Do you see the

  698. point Jesus was

  699. making?

  700. Who is the

  701. master of your

  702. life?

  703. Who do you

  704. live to please?

  705. Is it yourself?

  706. Or is it the

  707. God who has

  708. redeemed you and

  709. made you his

  710. own?

  711. You cannot

  712. serve two

  713. masters.

  714. You will either

  715. hate the one and

  716. love the other

  717. or be devoted to

  718. the one and

  719. despise the other.

  720. You cannot

  721. serve God and

  722. money.

  723. do you

  724. love the other

  725. things?

  726. What does all

  727. that mean for

  728. us?

  729. That's brief

  730. exposition.

  731. What does that

  732. mean for us?

  733. Three things I

  734. want to say this

  735. evening.

  736. Number one,

  737. very obviously,

  738. Jesus is

  739. counselling,

  740. encouraging and

  741. pressing on his

  742. disciples to live

  743. their lives in the

  744. light of

  745. eternity.

  746. You see,

  747. this unrighteous

  748. steward had the

  749. news, the

  750. foresight to

  751. look ahead, to

  752. prepare for what

  753. was coming.

  754. And Jesus said,

  755. you know, the

  756. sons of this age

  757. are wise or

  758. more shrewd than

  759. the sons of

  760. life.

  761. And I find

  762. that a huge

  763. challenge.

  764. How honestly,

  765. how realistically

  766. do I live my

  767. life in the

  768. light of

  769. eternity?

  770. It's so easy

  771. to live as if

  772. this life would

  773. simply go on and

  774. on and on.

  775. Yesterday,

  776. yesterday, it

  777. seems to me,

  778. yesterday I was

  779. 37.

  780. I know I was

  781. 67.

  782. I look in the

  783. mirror and I

  784. think, who are

  785. you?

  786. Do I know you?

  787. Are you my

  788. dad?

  789. What's happened

  790. to you?

  791. Why do you look

  792. like that?

  793. I don't feel as

  794. though I should

  795. look like that.

  796. But I do.

  797. Life is

  798. swifter than a

  799. weaver's shuttle.

  800. And soon

  801. and very

  802. soon, we

  803. will meet

  804. the Lord.

  805. About 30

  806. years ago, in

  807. New Mills, I was

  808. a parish minister

  809. in Ayrshire for

  810. 20 years.

  811. The lovely

  812. couple we

  813. supported and

  814. still support in

  815. different ways,

  816. church planting in

  817. France.

  818. They've been

  819. church planting

  820. for over 50

  821. years with

  822. WEC.

  823. and they

  824. have no

  825. great education.

  826. They're two

  827. of the godliest

  828. people I've

  829. ever met.

  830. And they

  831. came and

  832. spoke at our

  833. prayer meeting.

  834. And I'll

  835. never forget

  836. something he

  837. said.

  838. He quoted

  839. two lines of

  840. a little poem.

  841. It's almost

  842. doggerel.

  843. The poetry's

  844. not very good,

  845. but the

  846. theology's

  847. wonderful.

  848. Only one

  849. life, soon

  850. it must

  851. pass.

  852. last.

  853. I've

  854. never

  855. forgotten

  856. that.

  857. It

  858. pricks my

  859. conscience

  860. then.

  861. It

  862. pricks my

  863. conscience

  864. tonight.

  865. Only one

  866. life, soon

  867. it must

  868. last.

  869. Only what's

  870. done for

  871. Jesus will

  872. last.

  873. Now, Jesus

  874. isn't encouraging

  875. us to opt

  876. out of life.

  877. Far from it.

  878. We have to

  879. live in the

  880. midst of this

  881. world, the

  882. salt and

  883. light.

  884. But at the

  885. same time, we

  886. have to live

  887. pilgrim lives.

  888. This world

  889. is not our

  890. home.

  891. And one

  892. day we

  893. shall stand

  894. before the

  895. Lord and

  896. give an

  897. account of

  898. our lives.

  899. We must

  900. all appear

  901. before the

  902. judgment seat

  903. of Christ,

  904. 2 Corinthians

  905. 5.10, and

  906. give an

  907. account of

  908. the deeds

  909. done in

  910. the body.

  911. And Jesus

  912. is saying,

  913. look ahead.

  914. Look

  915. ahead.

  916. who's

  917. well done

  918. are you

  919. aiming for

  920. in life?

  921. Are you

  922. living in

  923. the light

  924. of eternity?

  925. Because life

  926. is very

  927. swift.

  928. You're in the

  929. fullness of

  930. it, and

  931. before you

  932. know it, in

  933. the blink of

  934. an eye, it's

  935. just disappearing

  936. through your

  937. fingers.

  938. Live in the

  939. light of

  940. eternity, Jesus

  941. is saying, be

  942. shrewd like

  943. this dishonest

  944. steward.

  945. Have

  946. foresight.

  947. But then

  948. secondly, remember

  949. that we are

  950. all stewards

  951. of everything

  952. we possess.

  953. You do not

  954. possess one

  955. iota.

  956. Hands up if

  957. you own a

  958. house.

  959. I do.

  960. Hands up.

  961. No, you

  962. don't.

  963. It's God's.

  964. You say, well,

  965. I pay the

  966. mortgage.

  967. You may pay

  968. the mortgage.

  969. Every penny

  970. you pay is

  971. given to you

  972. by the

  973. sovereign Lord

  974. in his good

  975. pleasure and

  976. kindness.

  977. You say, I've

  978. got no mortgage.

  979. That's because

  980. of the good

  981. pleasure of

  982. God.

  983. The clothes

  984. you wear, the

  985. food you eat,

  986. the children

  987. you have, they

  988. are all the

  989. lords.

  990. But you have

  991. them as

  992. stewards.

  993. He has

  994. given them to

  995. you as a

  996. trust.

  997. They are

  998. entrusted to

  999. you.

  1000. And one day

  1001. the Lord is

  1002. going to say,

  1003. what did you

  1004. do with

  1005. those precious

  1006. little lies

  1007. that I gave

  1008. to you?

  1009. What did

  1010. you do with

  1011. that home

  1012. that I

  1013. entrusted to

  1014. you in my

  1015. bounty?

  1016. What did

  1017. you do with

  1018. this, that

  1019. or the

  1020. other?

  1021. Whether we

  1022. have little

  1023. or much

  1024. is of little

  1025. consequence,

  1026. but what did

  1027. you do?

  1028. Because nothing

  1029. we have is

  1030. our own.

  1031. What do we

  1032. have that we

  1033. did not first

  1034. receive?

  1035. we would be

  1036. penniless beggars

  1037. with nothing,

  1038. not an

  1039. iota,

  1040. not an

  1041. iota of

  1042. clothing,

  1043. if it were

  1044. not for the

  1045. good pleasure,

  1046. kindness and

  1047. goodness of

  1048. God.

  1049. We are

  1050. stewards and

  1051. we have an

  1052. account to

  1053. give.

  1054. I don't

  1055. think that

  1056. means that

  1057. we are

  1058. to say,

  1059. oh well,

  1060. I shouldn't

  1061. go holidays,

  1062. I shouldn't

  1063. do this,

  1064. I shouldn't

  1065. do that.

  1066. We each

  1067. live before

  1068. God,

  1069. we are to

  1070. live

  1071. before the

  1072. face of

  1073. God.

  1074. We are

  1075. not to

  1076. judge other

  1077. people,

  1078. not to

  1079. stand in

  1080. judgment

  1081. saying,

  1082. ah,

  1083. you are

  1084. not using

  1085. the

  1086. resources

  1087. God

  1088. has

  1089. given

  1090. you.

  1091. It's

  1092. enough for

  1093. us to

  1094. be asking

  1095. ourselves

  1096. every day,

  1097. am I

  1098. using the

  1099. resources

  1100. well and

  1101. wisely that

  1102. God has

  1103. given to

  1104. me?

  1105. I'm a

  1106. steward.

  1107. Are you

  1108. being a

  1109. wise,

  1110. godly

  1111. steward?

  1112. And then

  1113. thirdly,

  1114. I think we

  1115. need to

  1116. understand that

  1117. Christian giving

  1118. and Christian

  1119. serving in

  1120. the new

  1121. covenant is

  1122. sacrificial and

  1123. not proportional.

  1124. You may not

  1125. agree with me,

  1126. and that's

  1127. fine, I

  1128. don't get

  1129. everything

  1130. right.

  1131. I think we

  1132. can take

  1133. comfort in

  1134. saying,

  1135. well I

  1136. tithe.

  1137. But if

  1138. the Lord

  1139. Jesus

  1140. Christ is

  1141. our

  1142. exemplar in

  1143. everything,

  1144. he gave

  1145. everything for

  1146. us.

  1147. He didn't

  1148. tithe himself,

  1149. for you

  1150. know the

  1151. grace of

  1152. our Lord

  1153. Jesus

  1154. Christ,

  1155. and this

  1156. theology

  1157. comes in

  1158. the midst

  1159. of this

  1160. lengthy

  1161. exposition

  1162. on Christian

  1163. giving in

  1164. 2 Corinthians

  1165. 8 and

  1166. 9.

  1167. You know

  1168. the grace

  1169. of our

  1170. Lord Jesus

  1171. Christ,

  1172. that though

  1173. he was

  1174. rich,

  1175. yet for

  1176. your sakes

  1177. he became

  1178. poor,

  1179. so that

  1180. you by

  1181. his

  1182. poverty

  1183. might

  1184. become

  1185. rich.

  1186. Christian

  1187. giving and

  1188. Christian

  1189. serving is

  1190. not

  1191. proportional,

  1192. it's

  1193. sacrificial.

  1194. It should

  1195. cost us

  1196. not

  1197. not

  1198. but

  1199. that can

  1200. be taken

  1201. wrongly,

  1202. I know,

  1203. but I don't

  1204. want to

  1205. qualify,

  1206. I could

  1207. qualify it,

  1208. hopefully

  1209. helpfully,

  1210. but I'm

  1211. not going

  1212. to.

  1213. Christian

  1214. giving and

  1215. Christian

  1216. serving should

  1217. cost us,

  1218. not

  1219. 9 to 5,

  1220. not saying,

  1221. given my

  1222. tithe,

  1223. maybe 1%

  1224. is sacrificial

  1225. for some

  1226. people,

  1227. I absolutely

  1228. mean that,

  1229. I believe

  1230. that,

  1231. maybe 99%

  1232. for other

  1233. people who

  1234. live before

  1235. God,

  1236. that's why

  1237. read 2

  1238. Corinthians 8

  1239. and 9,

  1240. Christian

  1241. giving and

  1242. Christian

  1243. serving is

  1244. to be

  1245. sacrificial,

  1246. the church

  1247. of Jesus

  1248. Christ is

  1249. worthy of

  1250. our highest

  1251. and our

  1252. best,

  1253. to use

  1254. the well

  1255. worn

  1256. old

  1257. phrase,

  1258. we're to

  1259. lay all

  1260. on the

  1261. altar

  1262. for the

  1263. Saviour,

  1264. we're to

  1265. be living

  1266. sacrifices,

  1267. we're to

  1268. be daily

  1269. oblations,

  1270. giving all

  1271. that we

  1272. are to

  1273. him who

  1274. gave

  1275. everything

  1276. and beyond

  1277. for us.

  1278. I remember

  1279. some years

  1280. ago reading

  1281. the biography

  1282. of William

  1283. Borden,

  1284. it's called

  1285. William Borden

  1286. of Yale,

  1287. he was a

  1288. young man,

  1289. a very

  1290. wealthy

  1291. young man

  1292. who was

  1293. at the

  1294. University

  1295. of Yale,

  1296. the third

  1297. best

  1298. university

  1299. in the

  1300. world,

  1301. two ahead

  1302. of Oxford

  1303. and two

  1304. behind

  1305. Cambridge,

  1306. you can

  1307. work that

  1308. out,

  1309. and he

  1310. was converted,

  1311. he came to

  1312. faith in

  1313. Jesus Christ

  1314. and for

  1315. some reason

  1316. he set

  1317. his heart

  1318. on going

  1319. to the

  1320. land of

  1321. Burma,

  1322. Myanmar,

  1323. and he

  1324. prepared to

  1325. go to

  1326. Burma,

  1327. he graduated

  1328. but he

  1329. was persuaded

  1330. to spend

  1331. some time

  1332. travelling

  1333. throughout

  1334. America

  1335. encouraging

  1336. young men

  1337. in particular

  1338. to give

  1339. up their

  1340. small

  1341. ambitions

  1342. and to

  1343. go out

  1344. east and

  1345. preach the

  1346. gospel

  1347. and he

  1348. did that

  1349. for some

  1350. two years

  1351. or three

  1352. years,

  1353. I can't

  1354. remember

  1355. and then

  1356. the day

  1357. came

  1358. when

  1359. William

  1360. Borden

  1361. set sail

  1362. from

  1363. New

  1364. York

  1365. heading

  1366. for

  1367. the

  1368. land

  1369. of

  1370. Burma

  1371. and in

  1372. those

  1373. days

  1374. the

  1375. first

  1376. great

  1377. port

  1378. of

  1379. call

  1380. was

  1381. Alexandria

  1382. in

  1383. Egypt

  1384. and when

  1385. he got

  1386. to

  1387. Alexandria

  1388. William

  1389. Borden

  1390. was struck

  1391. down

  1392. with

  1393. cerebral

  1394. encephalitis

  1395. he was

  1396. going to

  1397. die in

  1398. Alexandria

  1399. he would

  1400. never see

  1401. Burma

  1402. he had

  1403. lived to

  1404. go to

  1405. Burma

  1406. since he

  1407. was

  1408. converted

  1409. but he

  1410. would

  1411. never see

  1412. Burma

  1413. he would

  1414. die

  1415. and be

  1416. buried

  1417. in

  1418. Alexandria

  1419. as he

  1420. lay

  1421. dying

  1422. three

  1423. medical

  1424. men

  1425. gathered

  1426. round the

  1427. bottom

  1428. of his

  1429. bed

  1430. and one

  1431. of them

  1432. said

  1433. what a

  1434. waste

  1435. they knew

  1436. about his

  1437. life and

  1438. his promise

  1439. wealthy young

  1440. man

  1441. what a waste

  1442. and you

  1443. understand that

  1444. humanly speaking

  1445. what a waste

  1446. and with the

  1447. little strength

  1448. he had left

  1449. William

  1450. Borden

  1451. raised

  1452. himself

  1453. and simply

  1454. said

  1455. no retreat

  1456. no reserve

  1457. no regrets

  1458. no retreat

  1459. no reserve

  1460. no regrets

  1461. that's a life

  1462. that understood

  1463. that he had to

  1464. give everything

  1465. and even

  1466. though the

  1467. Lord would

  1468. take him

  1469. to glory

  1470. before he

  1471. ever saw

  1472. Burma

  1473. that was

  1474. for the

  1475. Lord

  1476. that's what

  1477. Jesus I think

  1478. is teaching

  1479. his disciples

  1480. be sons of

  1481. light who live

  1482. in the light

  1483. of eternity

  1484. recognize

  1485. you are stewards

  1486. with an

  1487. account

  1488. one day

  1489. to give

  1490. and understand

  1491. that belonging

  1492. to me is

  1493. not proportional

  1494. but sacrificial

  1495. you see in the

  1496. light of the

  1497. Lord's

  1498. giving of

  1499. himself for

  1500. us

  1501. how can we

  1502. dare not

  1503. give everything

  1504. we are to

  1505. him

  1506. I did

  1507. this

  1508. for you

  1509. and eternity

  1510. will be an

  1511. exploration

  1512. of what that

  1513. meant

  1514. in 10,000

  1515. times 10,000

  1516. years

  1517. we will be

  1518. no nearer

  1519. plumbing

  1520. the immensities

  1521. and the

  1522. infinities

  1523. of what it

  1524. meant for

  1525. the Son

  1526. of God

  1527. to become

  1528. flesh

  1529. and become

  1530. a curse

  1531. on Calvary's

  1532. cross

  1533. I did all

  1534. that for

  1535. you

  1536. what did

  1537. you do

  1538. for me

  1539. wouldn't

  1540. you want

  1541. to be able

  1542. to say

  1543. Lord

  1544. I didn't

  1545. do much

  1546. but by

  1547. your grace

  1548. and by

  1549. the enabling

  1550. of your

  1551. spirit

  1552. I sought

  1553. to give

  1554. my own

  1555. tis the

  1556. least

  1557. I could

  1558. do

  1559. as we

  1560. come to

  1561. the Lord's

  1562. table

  1563. we're going

  1564. to sing

  1565. !
