  1. Christmas is weird, isn't it?

  2. There's lots of weird things about Christmas.

  3. It's the only time of the year we chop down a tree

  4. and some families set fire

  5. to their Christmas pudding.

  6. Any families here that set fire?

  7. That is great.

  8. Traditionalists.

  9. Weird things about Christmas.

  10. Things that we don't understand.

  11. But there's nothing compared

  12. to the very first Christmas.

  13. The very first Christmas

  14. was really weird, wasn't it?

  15. There was a star

  16. above Bethlehem.

  17. There were wise men that brought presents

  18. that cost thousands

  19. and thousands of thousands of parents

  20. to a family they'd never met before

  21. and they didn't know.

  22. None of those things happened

  23. when I had a baby.

  24. No shepherds turned up.

  25. I didn't have a baby.

  26. No, my wife turned a baby.

  27. Shepherds didn't turn up.

  28. Wiser men didn't turn up.

  29. Why did they happen?

  30. Why did all these weird things happen

  31. at that first Christmas?

  32. Well, because the baby is an incredible infant.

  33. That's the first thing I've got to say today.

  34. An incredible infant.

  35. We saw that in the reading, didn't we?

  36. The name that Mary and Joseph

  37. gave to their baby

  38. was Jesus.

  39. He was going to give birth to a son

  40. and his name shall be Jesus.

  41. Which means,

  42. the word Jesus means God saves.

  43. It's a strange name, isn't it?

  44. It's like calling your child fireman.

  45. Fireman.

  46. God saves.

  47. And Jesus showed everyone

  48. he was God the saviour.

  49. This baby is God.

  50. Now that explains some weird things.

  51. He is an incredible infant.

  52. It explains the star in the sky.

  53. God is entering this world.

  54. The wise men, the angels.

  55. And I think, don't you,

  56. I think it would be very weird

  57. if weird things didn't happen

  58. when God entered the world.

  59. He is the king of the universe.

  60. Christmas, that first Christmas,

  61. is a big fuss

  62. because the creator

  63. is entering his creation.

  64. Jesus is God.

  65. Is there a God?

  66. You might ask that.

  67. Well, Jesus shows what God is like.

  68. Just look at Jesus

  69. in the pages of the Bible.

  70. And there is nothing

  71. un-God-like in Jesus.

  72. An incredible infant.

  73. An incredible infant,

  74. secondly,

  75. who had a low-down life.

  76. The Christmas story

  77. is not just about

  78. the amazing things, is it?

  79. It's not just about the star

  80. and the wise men

  81. and the gifts

  82. and the shepherds

  83. and choirs of angels.

  84. The story of Christmas

  85. is very humble.

  86. It's very lowly.

  87. They end up in someone else's house.

  88. On someone else's floor.

  89. Maybe even sharing a room

  90. with sheep and with goats

  91. and with cows.

  92. Or, as you know,

  93. the baby is put in a manger.

  94. There's no talk of a cattle shed.

  95. But there is talk of a manger.

  96. He's put in a feeding trough.

  97. It's very, very lowly.

  98. It's meant to jar us.

  99. It's not what you would expect

  100. when God comes to the world.

  101. Now, you sing a song, don't you,

  102. in Christ,

  103. Christ,

  104. and Son of the Spirit.

  105. My God is so

  106. big, so

  107. and so

  108. there's nothing my

  109. the

  110. the

  111. the

  112. the stars are his

  113. my God is so

  114. so

  115. and so mighty.

  116. There's nothing my God can do.

  117. Now I'm going to teach you two new verses, okay?

  118. Here's a few verses.

  119. Okay?

  120. Here they are.

  121. This verse says,

  122. My God is so small

  123. so weak

  124. and so helpless

  125. there's nothing that God child can do.

  126. Is that alright?

  127. My God is so small

  128. so weak and so helpless

  129. there's nothing that God child can do.

  130. The mountains are his

  131. the rivers are his

  132. the stars are his handiwork too.

  133. But my God is so small

  134. so weak and so helpless

  135. there's nothing my God

  136. will not do for you.

  137. And that's the story of Christmas, isn't it?

  138. The God is so big

  139. so strong

  140. so mighty

  141. becomes

  142. so small

  143. so weak

  144. and so helpless.

  145. And the God child

  146. lies in a manger

  147. and there's nothing

  148. he can do.

  149. But wonderfully

  150. that God child

  151. is so small

  152. so weak

  153. and so helpless

  154. there's nothing

  155. that he will not do for you.

  156. Jesus had a low young life

  157. his dad was a carpenter.

  158. Lots of people didn't like him

  159. there's nothing special about him.

  160. The people he went to

  161. were not the rich

  162. and the famous

  163. they were

  164. the lowly

  165. and the humble

  166. and the poor.

  167. people that you and I

  168. might think

  169. oh

  170. they believe me

  171. but not for Jesus.

  172. Jesus is God

  173. he could have

  174. hanged out with angels

  175. couldn't he

  176. but he hanged out

  177. with losers.

  178. And in the end

  179. he died on the cross

  180. now why

  181. is he dying on the cross?

  182. So the incredible infant

  183. the lowly life

  184. would be the Greek gift.

  185. Great Christmas gifts

  186. is brilliant isn't it?

  187. What's been your favourite

  188. gift of the morning?

  189. So don't tell me.

  190. Peter

  191. what was your favourite

  192. gift this morning?

  193. Your white

  194. Debbie

  195. what was your favourite

  196. gift this morning?

  197. Do you have an opener?

  198. All these traditionalists

  199. John

  200. a bike racing

  201. blu-ray

  202. have you opened

  203. your presents yet

  204. Marius?

  205. What was your favourite

  206. present this morning?

  207. A jumper

  208. it's a very nice

  209. jumper isn't it?

  210. Everybody compliment

  211. what about you

  212. Rebecca?

  213. What was yours?

  214. A face

  215. meeting

  216. face painting

  217. set

  218. face painting

  219. sounds

  220. to death

  221. is it?

  222. It's great

  223. gifts

  224. great gifts

  225. sometimes boring

  226. presents

  227. imagine you

  228. got up this

  229. morning

  230. and there was

  231. a parcel

  232. at the end

  233. of your bed

  234. and you opened

  235. it up

  236. and it was

  237. washing up

  238. liquid

  239. boring presents

  240. I bought

  241. Clara Blender

  242. once

  243. Jesus comes

  244. to bring you

  245. rescue

  246. rescue

  247. what a rubbish

  248. gift

  249. rubbish

  250. gift

  251. but it is

  252. actually the

  253. greatest gift

  254. you should

  255. call his

  256. name

  257. Jesus

  258. for he

  259. will

  260. save

  261. his

  262. people

  263. from

  264. their

  265. sins

  266. and

  267. Jesus

  268. means

  269. God

  270. saves

  271. but here's

  272. the thing

  273. you might be sitting here this morning

  274. and you might think

  275. I don't need that gift

  276. I don't need it

  277. but let me say this to you

  278. you could go without any present

  279. that you will have today

  280. you could go without the greatest present

  281. that you've got

  282. but you cannot do without this present

  283. for us

  284. because he will save his people

  285. from their sins

  286. what is sin?

  287. sin is living life without God

  288. we wake up

  289. we get on with our day

  290. we brush our teeth

  291. we get out of the house

  292. we go on our way

  293. and we don't think

  294. of God

  295. God is the God of all

  296. he gave us everything

  297. we enjoy

  298. he should be our God

  299. so how do you think

  300. God feels

  301. when we live life

  302. without thanking him

  303. without honouring him

  304. and in fact

  305. we just ignore him

  306. how do we treat people

  307. we don't like?

  308. we never thank them

  309. we never bother with them

  310. in fact we just try to avoid them

  311. sometimes we even ignore them

  312. it's like I invite you

  313. to my house

  314. for Christmas day

  315. and I welcome you in

  316. and as soon as you're in

  317. you open the front door

  318. and you push me

  319. out of my own house

  320. and you lock the door

  321. and you throw away the key

  322. and I'm outside

  323. of my own home

  324. and that is how we treat God

  325. and we need rescuing

  326. from that

  327. from ourselves

  328. the angels tell us

  329. that he came to save us

  330. from our sins

  331. that he came to take

  332. the punishment

  333. that we deserve

  334. for pushing them out

  335. and locking the door

  336. the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ

  337. is a little bit like a key

  338. it's a little bit like the key

  339. that unlocks the door

  340. that you pushed God out of

  341. and that door

  342. opens that door

  343. so God can come in

  344. and we can be friends

  345. and know him forever

  346. and that's what Christmas is about

  347. it is about God's invitation

  348. to be friends with him

  349. and it's invitation

  350. for all people

  351. for people who come to church

  352. every week

  353. for people who come to church

  354. maybe just once a year

  355. you can have this gift

  356. this gift is for you

  357. simply by acknowledging

  358. the reality of how you've lived

  359. that you've lived life

  360. without paying any attention

  361. to his son

  362. and saying sorry

  363. and asking to be forgiven

  364. and if we will mean it

  365. God will say yes

  366. Christmas makes us do

  367. weird things

  368. people sing songs

  369. and love singing songs

  370. they don't believe in

  371. things they don't do

  372. for the rest of the year

  373. they decorate their house

  374. in a way that they never

  375. decorated in February

  376. or January

  377. they send cards to people

  378. that they can't even remember

  379. who they are

  380. we eat turkey

  381. when none of us really like it

  382. and maybe today

  383. you can do something else

  384. that you wouldn't normally do

  385. that you think

  386. may be a little bit weird

  387. you've been thinking

  388. about the Lord Jesus

  389. God has come to save us

  390. in his son

  391. if we could save ourselves

  392. he wouldn't need to have

  393. sent his son

  394. God came to save us

  395. through Jesus

  396. and whatever gifts

  397. you get this year

  398. and I hope you get

  399. who you want it

  400. I hope you get great gifts

  401. I hope you have a great day

  402. but even the greatest gift

  403. that you get today

  404. doesn't compare

  405. with the greatest gift

  406. of knowing God

  407. through Jesus

  408. because we have treated him

  409. like an enemy

  410. and we can leave here today

  411. knowing him as our friend

  412. and so I want to wish you

  413. a very very happy Christmas

  414. but I want you to think

  415. and I want you to consider

  416. Christ Jesus came into this world

  417. to see the sinners

  418. let's pray
