  1. How's your geography? How's your geography? I'm not going to give you a quiz. I was really into geography. He's a geography teacher here. There's someone, I think, Naomi Lafroy is studying geography, some people doing A-level geography. Well, Matthew, the writer of the Gospel, he is really into geography, particularly in chapter 2. Matthew wants you to travel. Matthew wants you to get your map out. Get your sat map.

  2. And he wants to take you to three places this morning. He wants to take you to Egypt, and to Bethlehem, and to Nazareth. And in each place, he wants to show you something about someone. Something about someone. And in each of these places, he's got history to tell you, like a good tour guide does. He touches an Old Testament prophecy. He wants to teach you theological geography.

  3. So, first of all, we must visit Egypt. And when we visit Egypt, what Matthew shows us is he shows us the hope of God's people. We visit Egypt to see the hope of God's people. And he tells us about that in verses 13 to 15.

  4. And especially how he tells us about how Mary, Joseph, and Mary and the child go to Egypt. Let me read them.

  5. Now when they departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. He said, rise, take the child and his mother. Note the order. It's not normal, is it?

  6. Note who's got priority. Take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt and remain there until I tell you.

  7. Herod is about to search for the child to destroy him. And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt.

  8. And he remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet. Out of Egypt I called my son.

  9. Now this isn't entirely straightforward, but he is quoting from Hosea, the Old Testament prophet Hosea chapter 11 and verse 1.

    Hosea 11 chapter mention

  10. And it's hard to know exactly what it's got to do with Jesus.

  11. Because if you go back to Hosea chapter 1, the whole verse reads.

    Hosea 1 chapter mention

  12. So why don't you just come there? Hosea chapter 1 if you can find it.

    Hosea 1 chapter mention

  13. Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah.

  14. Hosea chapter 11.

    Hosea 11 chapter mention

  15. And it says this, when Israel was a child, I loved him.

  16. And out of Egypt I called my son.

  17. So when you go to Matthew chapter 2,

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  18. the whole verse reads,

  19. when Israel was a child, I loved him.

  20. And out of Egypt I called my son.

  21. But Hosea chapter 11 refers to Israel, doesn't it?

    Hosea 11 chapter mention

  22. Not to Jesus.

  23. So when Israel was young,

  24. I called them out of Egypt, I called my son.

  25. It's picking up on what God says in Exodus chapter 4, verse 22.

    Exodus 4:22

  26. Where God says,

  27. Paul's Israel his son, his firstborn.

  28. And again, what has that got to do with Jesus?

  29. But hold the question.

  30. Look with me at Hosea chapter 11, verse 2.

    Hosea 11:2

  31. It says this,

  32. But the more they were called,

  33. the more they went away from me.

  34. They kept sacrificing to Baals,

  35. and burning offerings to idols.

  36. Again, what's that got to do with Jesus?

  37. What is that talking about?

  38. Well, it says the more they called them,

  39. the more they kept going away from them.

  40. The they's, God's prophets,

  41. God's messengers, God's preachers,

  42. the Lord's prophets,

  43. they'd address the people of Israel,

  44. and the more they addressed the people,

  45. the nation of Israel,

  46. and preached to them,

  47. and the more they called them to faithfulness,

  48. to come to God's ways,

  49. the further the people of Israel went away from God.

  50. They kept on sacrificing to Baal.

  51. They kept on sacrificing to idols.

  52. In other words,

  53. what you have in Hosea chapter 11, verses 1 and 2,

    Hosea 11:1

  54. is really a mini history of Israel.

  55. From the time they were called out of Egypt,

  56. in the Exodus,

  57. and then their history,

  58. was one of sin,

  59. and failure,

  60. and rebelliousness,

  61. and faithlessness,

  62. to God.

  63. And again,

  64. what does all that got to do with Jesus?

  65. Why does Matthew pick up this one liner from Hosea?

  66. Out of Egypt,

  67. I have called my son.

  68. And it's because I think Matthew wants you and I to see a certain parallel

  69. between Israel and Jesus.

  70. So to recap on the history,

  71. just like Jacob,

  72. at the end of Genesis,

  73. in chapter 46,

  74. he goes down,

  75. doesn't he,

  76. into Egypt,

  77. with all his family,

  78. to get away from a famine

  79. that was going to destroy his family.

  80. And Jacob and his family went to Egypt,

  81. and they found in Egypt a place of refuge.

  82. So, in the same way,

  83. the child Jesus is taken into Egypt.

  84. Here, he is rescued from the sword of Herod.

  85. And he finds in Egypt a place of refuge.

  86. And just as now he is in Egypt,

  87. he will eventually come out of Egypt,

  88. in the same way that Israel came out of Egypt,

  89. in the Exodus.

  90. So Jesus will have an Exodus from Egypt,

  91. when he eventually comes back to Palestine.

  92. And just as Hosea,

    Hosea 11:1

  93. chapter 11, verses 1 and 2,

  94. speaks of Israel when they were young.

  95. So in chapter 2 of Matthew,

  96. Jesus is young.

  97. And he is as a child.

  98. And just as Hosea 11 speaks of Israel as God's son,

  99. so here Jesus is God's son,

  100. as we'll find out.

  101. So you see, don't you,

  102. there's a certain parallel that you can see.

  103. But Matthew not only wants you to see a parallel,

  104. but a contrast,

  105. as it were.

  106. He is the new Israel.

  107. He is the one true Israelite.

  108. Jesus is the one who is retracing Israel's steps.

  109. And so as he goes down to Egypt,

  110. as a place in refuge,

  111. and where he is as a youth,

  112. as God's son,

  113. will exit Egypt,

  114. he will retrace Israel's history.

  115. But what happened to Israel's history?

  116. What does the mini Old Testament overview

  117. of Hosea 11, verses 1 and 2 tell us?

    Hosea 11:1

  118. It tells us that the more they were called,

  119. the more they went away.

  120. They kept sacrificing offerings to Baal,

  121. and burning offerings to idols.

  122. Israel was a faithless son.

  123. But Jesus will be a faithful son.

  124. Jesus will begin a new history.

  125. He will begin a new history of faithfulness,

  126. and obedience,

  127. and righteousness,

  128. in contrast to Israel.

  129. And that is why Matthew wants you to visit Egypt.

  130. Because you will see in Egypt

  131. the true, faithful Israelite,

  132. who is the hope of God's people.

  133. And you might say, so what?

  134. What, after all, difference does it make

  135. that Jesus is going to be

  136. this faithful and obedient Israelite?

  137. And actually, you need the rest

  138. of the New Testament for this.

  139. Because the difference that it makes

  140. is this faithful and obedient

  141. and righteous Jesus

  142. can be credited to your account,

  143. can be put to your account.

  144. The New Testament is full

  145. of a doctrine called

  146. the doctrine of union with Christ.

  147. Sometimes, in fact,

  148. it speaks more often than this

  149. about believers than any other phrase.

  150. It speaks about being in Christ.

  151. That is the way the New Testament

  152. describes believers.

  153. That if one is in Christ,

  154. if one is placed into Christ

  155. by faith,

  156. if they trust and rest

  157. in Christ alone,

  158. then everything Jesus did,

  159. and everything that Jesus does,

  160. becomes yours.

  161. I'm going to tell you,

  162. I'm going to tell you,

  163. the Scottish minister gave this

  164. illustration,

  165. I gave it to you before,

  166. of a Frenchman who wanted

  167. to become a British citizen.

  168. This Frenchman,

  169. he was attracted to the British

  170. way of life,

  171. to British food.

  172. So he took the test,

  173. he took his kind of

  174. nationalisation papers,

  175. whatever they're called,

  176. and he went through the process

  177. to become a British citizen.

  178. And after he became

  179. a British citizen,

  180. he was asked,

  181. how do you feel now?

  182. What difference does it make

  183. that you now are an Englishman?

  184. And he replied,

  185. well it means that instead

  186. of losing the Battle of Waterloo,

  187. I won it.

  188. Because when he became

  189. a British citizen,

  190. all that Britain

  191. had fought for and achieved,

  192. and one became his.

  193. And you see,

  194. the faithful Jesus,

  195. who is the faithful Israelite,

  196. who in place of God's

  197. faithless son Israel,

  198. now is the new Israel.

  199. Who will walk in faithfulness

  200. and righteousness

  201. and obedience to his Father.

  202. And we are in him.

  203. And that is when you are

  204. united in my faith,

  205. all of his righteousness

  206. and all of his faithfulness

  207. and all of his obedience

  208. becomes yours.

  209. That's why it's worth

  210. going to Egypt.

  211. You might ask,

  212. where does my rebellion

  213. and my failure go?

  214. And if you've been in the service,

  215. you know it,

  216. don't you?

  217. It goes onto the shoulders

  218. of the Lord Jesus.

  219. On the cross.

  220. On the cross.

  221. All my sin is laid on him.

  222. Matthew says,

  223. go to Egypt.

  224. Matthew says,

  225. come,

  226. our next stop is Bethlehem.

  227. We need to go to Bethlehem.

  228. And you must visit Bethlehem.

  229. And the reason you must visit Bethlehem

  230. is because you need to see

  231. in Bethlehem

  232. the mystery of God's providence.

  233. The mystery of

  234. God's providence.

  235. What does the word

  236. providence mean?

  237. Short Cascism tells us,

  238. doesn't it?

  239. What is God's works

  240. of providence?

  241. God's works of providence

  242. are his most

  243. holy,

  244. wise,

  245. powerful,

  246. preserving

  247. and governing

  248. all his creatures

  249. and all their actions.

  250. It's that he's in control

  251. of everything.

  252. It's that there is nothing

  253. outside of

  254. God's control.

  255. And so we go to Bethlehem

  256. to see the mystery

  257. of God's providence.

  258. It's an amazing chapter

  259. is that

  260. we see

  261. in verses 12

  262. and 13

  263. and 14

  264. that the Lord

  265. had given the direction

  266. to major.

  267. Start of chapter 2,

  268. wise men.

  269. Rest of chapter 2,

  270. evil men.

  271. Foolish men.

  272. And the Lord

  273. had given the direction

  274. to the Magi,

  275. the wise men

  276. and he warned them,

  277. don't go back to Herod.

  278. And they go back

  279. in a different route

  280. and then the Lord

  281. warns Joseph

  282. in a dream again,

  283. don't hang about

  284. but take the child

  285. and his mother

  286. and go into Egypt

  287. because Herod

  288. is seeking to destroy

  289. the child

  290. and Joseph

  291. evidently

  292. he gets up,

  293. he doesn't question,

  294. he escapes

  295. Bethlehem

  296. to go to Egypt

  297. and he leaves

  298. no forwarding address.

  299. They become

  300. a fugitive family.

  301. They become migrants,

  302. they become refugees,

  303. they're on the run.

  304. And yet Herod

  305. is outwitted again.

  306. Herod is outwitted again

  307. and Jesus is preserved.

  308. And we look at chapter 2

  309. and we say

  310. isn't that amazing?

  311. Isn't that the

  312. marvellous providence

  313. of God

  314. in preserving

  315. and governing

  316. all his creatures

  317. and all their actions?

  318. the spectacular

  319. providence

  320. of God

  321. in preserving

  322. and protecting

  323. the saviour

  324. that was born.

  325. And we say

  326. isn't this amazing?

  327. But what about

  328. the parents?

  329. What about

  330. the parents

  331. of the infant

  332. toddlers

  333. in Bethlehem?

  334. In verse 16.

  335. You've read that verse

  336. of you.

  337. And then Herod

  338. when he saw

  339. that he'd been

  340. tricked by the wise men

  341. became furious

  342. and he sent

  343. and killed

  344. all the male children

  345. in Bethlehem

  346. and in all that region

  347. who were two years old

  348. or under.

  349. according to the time

  350. he'd ascertained

  351. from the wise men.

  352. What do you say

  353. to those parents?

  354. What message

  355. do you bring them?

  356. When all of a sudden

  357. Herod's police

  358. come bursting

  359. into their home

  360. three or four of them

  361. they push the father

  362. to the ground

  363. they fling the mother

  364. into a corner

  365. they go into the nursery

  366. and they turn it

  367. into a butcher's shop

  368. with blood everywhere.

  369. What do you do

  370. in another home?

  371. A policeman

  372. bursts in

  373. through the door

  374. this time

  375. they don't even knock

  376. he grabs the infant

  377. from the breast

  378. of his mother

  379. and he rams a sword

  380. right through it.

  381. We don't know

  382. how many babies

  383. it might have been

  384. it might have been 10

  385. it might have been 15

  386. for a child's size

  387. it's bad for him.

  388. But what do you say

  389. to those parents?

  390. As they simmer

  391. in

  392. helpless rage

  393. and overflowing

  394. grief

  395. at what has happened

  396. to their home?

  397. Do we preach

  398. to them

  399. of the marvellous

  400. amazing

  401. providence of God?

  402. No we don't do we

  403. we talk about

  404. the mysterious

  405. providence of God.

  406. And I want you

  407. to see really clearly

  408. that the Bible

  409. places both of these

  410. aspects of the

  411. providence of God

  412. the amazing

  413. providence

  414. and the mysterious

  415. providence

  416. side by side.

  417. We look at the way

  418. that Jesus is preserved

  419. and we say

  420. look at the

  421. marvellous

  422. providence of God.

  423. Look how faithful

  424. God is.

  425. And then we see

  426. the butchery

  427. that Herod's men

  428. do

  429. and we say

  430. there is

  431. mystery here.

  432. There is a

  433. mysterious

  434. providence

  435. of God.

  436. we say

  437. how baffling

  438. God is.

  439. And we ask

  440. the question

  441. couldn't the

  442. God who

  443. preserved

  444. the Lord

  445. Jesus Christ

  446. from Herod's

  447. clutches

  448. also kept

  449. more than a

  450. dozen children

  451. from being

  452. murdered

  453. from the

  454. jaws of

  455. Herod?

  456. Why?

  457. Why did

  458. God not do

  459. something?

  460. Why did

  461. God allow

  462. this?

  463. We have to

  464. say that we

  465. in one sense

  466. we have to

  467. say that it

  468. wasn't God's

  469. fault

  470. that those

  471. babies were

  472. killed.

  473. We have to

  474. affirm that

  475. there is evil

  476. in this world.

  477. Herod

  478. was a

  479. murderous

  480. vicious

  481. tyrant.

  482. he had

  483. done it.

  484. When we

  485. think of

  486. terrorist

  487. attacks,

  488. when we

  489. think of

  490. shootings

  491. that take

  492. place,

  493. some of

  494. the

  495. disasters

  496. that

  497. happen,

  498. we do

  499. need to

  500. look at

  501. the

  502. responsibility

  503. of man.

  504. The

  505. fault of

  506. human

  507. beings.

  508. We have

  509. to say

  510. that there

  511. are men

  512. and women

  513. who do

  514. evil.

  515. And when

  516. we say

  517. why are

  518. these things

  519. allowed,

  520. we have

  521. to realise

  522. there is

  523. such a

  524. thing as

  525. evil.

  526. There's

  527. lots of

  528. people who

  529. don't

  530. believe

  531. that.

  532. And there

  533. are people

  534. that do

  535. evil things

  536. and there

  537. are evil

  538. men and

  539. evil women.

  540. But with

  541. all that,

  542. the Bible

  543. teaches and

  544. this church

  545. believes that

  546. God is

  547. sovereign.

  548. We believe

  549. that God

  550. is in

  551. control.

  552. What are

  553. the works

  554. of God's

  555. providence?

  556. The works

  557. of God's

  558. providence are

  559. wise and

  560. most powerful

  561. preserving all

  562. his creatures

  563. and all

  564. their actions.

  565. And so we

  566. have to come

  567. back and we

  568. have to say,

  569. don't we,

  570. why does God

  571. allow this?

  572. Why did God

  573. allow that?

  574. And here we

  575. are faced with

  576. the mysterious

  577. providence of

  578. God.

  579. And you and

  580. I, we want to

  581. get it all

  582. together,

  583. don't we?

  584. We want to be

  585. able to fit

  586. this into a

  587. nice, neat

  588. package that

  589. can be summarised

  590. in a couple

  591. of bullet

  592. points.

  593. Something that

  594. we can handle

  595. and we can

  596. explain easily

  597. to others.

  598. And something

  599. like this

  600. situation is

  601. very, very

  602. difficult because

  603. you have the

  604. marvellous

  605. providence of

  606. God on the

  607. one hand and

  608. you have the

  609. mysterious

  610. providence of

  611. God on the

  612. other.

  613. And I've

  614. not got answers

  615. for you this

  616. morning.

  617. But I want

  618. you to notice

  619. one thing

  620. before we go

  621. on.

  622. Where is it

  623. that we find

  624. this question

  625. raised about

  626. why does

  627. God allow

  628. this?

  629. You and

  630. I need to

  631. see that this

  632. question jumps

  633. off the pages

  634. of the Bible.

  635. It is the

  636. Bible that

  637. raises this

  638. question.

  639. The Bible

  640. doesn't hide

  641. it.

  642. It is the

  643. Bible that

  644. presses the

  645. issue home as

  646. we carefully

  647. read the

  648. text.

  649. It is the

  650. Bible that

  651. brings this

  652. issue in

  653. front of

  654. your nose.

  655. It is not

  656. some sceptical

  657. 21st century

  658. philosopher.

  659. It is not

  660. some angry

  661. atheist that

  662. suddenly realises

  663. this as if

  664. you've never

  665. thought about

  666. it before.

  667. We don't

  668. have to wait

  669. for some

  670. tragedy to

  671. strike.

  672. No, it is

  673. raised in the

  674. Bible.

  675. It is raised

  676. all over the

  677. Bible.

  678. The Bible is

  679. the place where

  680. this issue is

  681. raised.

  682. It spells it

  683. out plainly.

  684. The marvellous

  685. and the

  686. mysterious

  687. providence of

  688. God.

  689. What an

  690. honest book

  691. the Bible is.

  692. How can we

  693. get perspective

  694. on this?

  695. Matthew says

  696. that the

  697. incident is a

  698. fulfilment of

  699. prophecy.

  700. Verse 18,

  701. can you see

  702. that verse?

  703. That comes

  704. from Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 31:15

  705. 31 verse 15.

  706. And Matthew

  707. takes that text

  708. from Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 31:15

  709. 31 verse 15

  710. about Rachel,

  711. Jacob's wife,

  712. and Jeremiah's

  713. prophecy in

  714. verse 31.

  715. and in verse

  716. 15 he

  717. pictures Rachel

  718. personified.

  719. And Rachel is

  720. weeping and

  721. mourning and

  722. wailing over her

  723. children.

  724. Who is her

  725. children?

  726. Well, in

  727. Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  728. 31 it's either

  729. the northern

  730. kingdom of

  731. Israel being

  732. taken into

  733. captivity to

  734. Assyria or

  735. it's the southern

  736. kingdom going

  737. into captivity

  738. in Babylon.

  739. it's her

  740. children being

  741. taken away to

  742. captivity.

  743. But Rachel,

  744. the mother of

  745. Israel, is

  746. weeping over

  747. her sons and

  748. daughters because

  749. they're being

  750. carted off into

  751. exile.

  752. And she refuses

  753. to be consoled.

  754. She refuses to

  755. be comforted

  756. because she says

  757. at the end of

  758. verse 18,

  759. they are no

  760. more.

  761. What has that

  762. got to say?

  763. It's interesting

  764. when you look at

  765. Jeremiah chapter

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  766. 31, that

  767. verse 15 of

  768. Jeremiah 31 is

  769. the only negative

  770. verse in the

  771. whole of the

  772. chapter.

  773. If you break

  774. Jeremiah 31 up

  775. into the sections

  776. that it should be

  777. broken up into,

  778. it comes to 10

  779. sections of

  780. prophecy, of

  781. speaking the word

  782. of the Lord,

  783. of prediction.

  784. And every one

  785. of those sections

  786. is positive and

  787. helpful, even

  788. joyful and

  789. tone.

  790. And this is

  791. the point.

  792. When the New

  793. Testament cites

  794. a verse from

  795. a chapter in

  796. the Old

  797. Testament, which

  798. they frequently

  799. do, they

  800. frequently cite

  801. one-liners,

  802. they expect you

  803. to look at the

  804. whole of the

  805. Old Testament

  806. chapter.

  807. They expect you

  808. to look at that

  809. little verse in

  810. the Old Testament

  811. but look at the

  812. context which it

  813. comes in.

  814. And after

  815. Jeremiah states

  816. this about

  817. Rachel and

  818. weeping for

  819. her children,

  820. the answer to

  821. it comes from

  822. Yahweh, the

  823. God of Israel

  824. in the next

  825. line.

  826. So let me

  827. read it to

  828. you.

  829. Jeremiah 31.

  830. this is what it

  831. says.

  832. Thus says the

  833. Lord, keep your

  834. voice from

  835. weeping and

  836. your eyes from

  837. tears, for

  838. there is a

  839. reward for

  840. your work,

  841. declares the

  842. Lord.

  843. And they

  844. shall come back

  845. from the land

  846. of the enemy.

  847. There is hope

  848. for your

  849. future.

  850. future.

  851. Do you see

  852. what God is

  853. saying?

  854. God is

  855. saying, and

  856. it doesn't

  857. take all the

  858. pain away, it

  859. really doesn't.

  860. It doesn't take

  861. all the pain

  862. away on the

  863. spot, but

  864. what the

  865. Lord is

  866. saying, look,

  867. you think

  868. that you can

  869. write finished

  870. over, over

  871. the history of

  872. Israel.

  873. But in those

  874. moments, he

  875. says, keep

  876. your eyes

  877. from tears.

  878. they will

  879. come back

  880. from the

  881. land of

  882. your enemy

  883. and there

  884. is hope

  885. for your

  886. future.

  887. And Matthew

  888. takes that

  889. over.

  890. And what

  891. does he want

  892. us to hear?

  893. He wants us

  894. to see that

  895. just as again

  896. in Bethlehem,

  897. Rachel and

  898. Israel come

  899. into awful

  900. suffering, this

  901. situation.

  902. Yet there

  903. is hope.

  904. There is

  905. hope for

  906. the grieving

  907. parents of

  908. their sons

  909. in their

  910. son, the

  911. firstborn

  912. son.

  913. And even

  914. afreshly, God's

  915. people are a

  916. suffering people,

  917. aren't we?

  918. And the

  919. message of

  920. Jeremiah still

  921. holds that even

  922. though God's

  923. people are a

  924. suffering people,

  925. they are not a

  926. hopeless people.

  927. And the

  928. path of

  929. God's

  930. kingdom is

  931. wet with

  932. tears.

  933. There's no

  934. avoiding that.

  935. Jesus says,

  936. marvel, don't

  937. marvel not if

  938. the world

  939. hates you.

  940. And he's

  941. saying to you

  942. very, very

  943. clearly this

  944. morning, there

  945. is this

  946. mysterious

  947. providence of

  948. God.

  949. God.

  950. And what we

  951. do then is

  952. we live by

  953. faith beneath

  954. the mysterious

  955. providence of

  956. God.

  957. And it

  958. means that we

  959. don't, we

  960. refuse to

  961. bring up

  962. simple, easy

  963. answers for

  964. such issues so

  965. that they can be

  966. made rosy and

  967. cosy again.

  968. And as God

  969. preserved the

  970. infant

  971. stevia from

  972. the knives of

  973. Herod, even

  974. in our weeping

  975. and our tears

  976. and our anguish

  977. over strange

  978. providence, he

  979. still says to

  980. you and I,

  981. there is hope.

  982. There is hope.

  983. There's hope for

  984. your future.

  985. Matthew wants

  986. to take you to

  987. Bethlehem.

  988. And then he

  989. wants to take

  990. you to

  991. Nazareth.

  992. He wants to

  993. take you to

  994. Nazareth to

  995. see the

  996. humiliation of

  997. God's son.

  998. Nazareth is

  999. his third

  1000. stop in

  1001. verses 19

  1002. to 23.

  1003. Joseph wants

  1004. to go back

  1005. to Judah,

  1006. probably to

  1007. Bethlehem again,

  1008. but he finds

  1009. out that,

  1010. what's he

  1011. called,

  1012. Alcalaus or

  1013. whatever, is

  1014. ruling in the

  1015. place of his

  1016. father Herod,

  1017. and like

  1018. father, like

  1019. son.

  1020. And he

  1021. doesn't want

  1022. to go back

  1023. there, so

  1024. being warned

  1025. in a dream,

  1026. he goes up

  1027. north to

  1028. Galilee, and

  1029. it says he

  1030. settled there,

  1031. doesn't it?

  1032. He settled

  1033. there in a

  1034. city called

  1035. Nazareth, so

  1036. that what was

  1037. spoken by the

  1038. prophets might

  1039. be fulfilled,

  1040. and he would

  1041. be called a

  1042. Nazarene.

  1043. Now, why

  1044. this place?

  1045. Why all this

  1046. festival of

  1047. Nazareth?

  1048. Notice he

  1049. says, so what

  1050. was spoken by

  1051. the prophets,

  1052. he doesn't

  1053. just cite one

  1054. particular one,

  1055. so you don't

  1056. have an exact

  1057. quote to find,

  1058. but he

  1059. will be

  1060. called a

  1061. Nazarene.

  1062. Matthew says,

  1063. why all the

  1064. fuss, why

  1065. worry about

  1066. that?

  1067. The word

  1068. Nazar means

  1069. branch, there's

  1070. an illusion I

  1071. think to

  1072. Hebrews 11,

  1073. you know Hebrews

  1074. 11, do you

  1075. remember that?

  1076. The tree that

  1077. is cut down

  1078. on a stump,

  1079. there's a

  1080. stump in the

  1081. field and a

  1082. root will come

  1083. out of

  1084. Jesse, and

  1085. that is a

  1086. fulfillment of

  1087. this, he will

  1088. be called a

  1089. Nazarene, but

  1090. what is all

  1091. this fuss

  1092. about it?

  1093. Nazareth had a

  1094. bad reputation,

  1095. as did

  1096. Galilee in

  1097. general.

  1098. The folk

  1099. down south

  1100. around Jerusalem,

  1101. the kind of

  1102. more true

  1103. blue Jews,

  1104. who had a

  1105. more straight

  1106. base Judaism,

  1107. they always

  1108. looked with a

  1109. sceptical eye

  1110. on Galilee.

  1111. Galilee was

  1112. regarded with

  1113. contempt.

  1114. There was a

  1115. saying, if you

  1116. want to get

  1117. rich, go

  1118. north, and

  1119. if you want

  1120. to get wise,

  1121. go south.

  1122. north around

  1123. Galilee, that

  1124. was where the

  1125. trade was.

  1126. The south

  1127. was the

  1128. study of

  1129. the law

  1130. of God.

  1131. And they

  1132. were saying

  1133. you can't

  1134. be prosperous

  1135. and pious.

  1136. Galilee was

  1137. more open to

  1138. outside influences,

  1139. more interaction

  1140. with pagans,

  1141. they were less

  1142. strict in their

  1143. religious

  1144. observances.

  1145. True Jews

  1146. regarded Galilee,

  1147. that area, with a

  1148. kind of quizzical

  1149. look.

  1150. And Nazareth in

  1151. particular.

  1152. even other

  1153. Galileans seem

  1154. to regard

  1155. Nazareth with

  1156. repose.

  1157. So in

  1158. John's Gospel,

  1159. Nathaniel from

  1160. Cana in

  1161. Galilee, when

  1162. he was told

  1163. that the

  1164. Messiah was

  1165. from Nazareth,

  1166. he said,

  1167. what are you

  1168. kidding me?

  1169. Can anything

  1170. good come out

  1171. of Nazareth?

  1172. And that's

  1173. why Matthew

  1174. has to explain

  1175. this.

  1176. How can you

  1177. have someone

  1178. who is really

  1179. the Messiah

  1180. coming from

  1181. such a rotten

  1182. place like

  1183. Nazareth?

  1184. I'm trying

  1185. to think

  1186. the

  1187. first one's

  1188. ridiculous.

  1189. But when I

  1190. was growing up,

  1191. two years before

  1192. I went to

  1193. my high school,

  1194. the Welsh

  1195. school,

  1196. Astrol

  1197. Goven

  1198. Goir,

  1199. took and

  1200. were given

  1201. our lower

  1202. school.

  1203. And I

  1204. think it's

  1205. fair to

  1206. say the

  1207. school I

  1208. went to,

  1209. Gowden

  1210. Comprehensive,

  1211. hated Astrol

  1212. Goven

  1213. Goir.

  1214. As far as I

  1215. was aware,

  1216. we had never

  1217. lost a rugby

  1218. game to them.

  1219. It was

  1220. unthinkable.

  1221. We treated

  1222. them with

  1223. absolute

  1224. disgust.

  1225. And you

  1226. always knew

  1227. that no

  1228. matter who

  1229. you played

  1230. in rugby

  1231. during the

  1232. year,

  1233. there was

  1234. always one

  1235. game you

  1236. would win,

  1237. Astrol Goven

  1238. Goir.

  1239. I can't

  1240. stand them

  1241. even now,

  1242. really.

  1243. We looked

  1244. down on

  1245. them.

  1246. John

  1247. Hartson

  1248. went to

  1249. Astrol Goven

  1250. Goir,

  1251. that kind

  1252. of person.

  1253. And what

  1254. Matthew is

  1255. saying is

  1256. Jesus grew

  1257. up in

  1258. Astrol Goven

  1259. Goir.

  1260. And the

  1261. reaction that

  1262. I had as

  1263. a teenager

  1264. to that

  1265. school,

  1266. that is the

  1267. reaction people

  1268. had towards

  1269. somebody in

  1270. Nazareth.

  1271. Can't you

  1272. have a

  1273. Messiah who

  1274. was a

  1275. little bit

  1276. more class

  1277. than to

  1278. grow up and

  1279. live in a

  1280. place like

  1281. that?

  1282. And he

  1283. had to

  1284. explain to

  1285. Jews who

  1286. would be

  1287. offended and

  1288. have a

  1289. problem with

  1290. that.

  1291. And that

  1292. is why

  1293. Matthew

  1294. goes to

  1295. the problem

  1296. and he

  1297. says,

  1298. wait a

  1299. minute,

  1300. there was a

  1301. line in

  1302. prophecy,

  1303. people saw

  1304. those things

  1305. as mutually

  1306. exclusive.

  1307. They thought

  1308. you can't

  1309. have a

  1310. Messiah,

  1311. God's

  1312. chosen king

  1313. who comes

  1314. from Nazareth.

  1315. It would be

  1316. like saying

  1317. the Pope

  1318. is a

  1319. Presbyterian,

  1320. you can't

  1321. have those

  1322. things,

  1323. it can't

  1324. be.

  1325. And Matthew

  1326. says,

  1327. but that's

  1328. what's

  1329. prophesied

  1330. in God's

  1331. word.

  1332. That the

  1333. Messiah would

  1334. really have

  1335. humble

  1336. associations.

  1337. Do you

  1338. see God's

  1339. humility?

  1340. Let me

  1341. read to

  1342. you from

  1343. J.C.

  1344. Ryle.

  1345. In

  1346. Nazareth,

  1347. the Lord

  1348. Jesus lived

  1349. thirty years.

  1350. It was

  1351. there he

  1352. grew up,

  1353. from infancy

  1354. to childhood,

  1355. from childhood

  1356. to boyhood,

  1357. and from

  1358. boyhood to

  1359. youth,

  1360. and from

  1361. youth to

  1362. man's

  1363. estate.

  1364. We know

  1365. little of

  1366. the manner

  1367. in which

  1368. those thirty

  1369. years are

  1370. spent.

  1371. That he

  1372. was subject

  1373. to Mary

  1374. and Joseph

  1375. were expressly

  1376. told.

  1377. That he

  1378. worked in

  1379. the carpenter

  1380. shop with

  1381. Joseph is

  1382. highly

  1383. probable.

  1384. We only

  1385. know that

  1386. almost five

  1387. sixth of

  1388. the time

  1389. that the

  1390. saviour of

  1391. the world

  1392. was on

  1393. earth,

  1394. was passed

  1395. among the

  1396. poor of

  1397. this world,

  1398. and passed

  1399. in complete

  1400. retirement.

  1401. Truly this

  1402. was humility.

  1403. Let us learn

  1404. wisdom from

  1405. our saviour's

  1406. example.

  1407. We are,

  1408. most of us,

  1409. far too

  1410. ready to

  1411. seek great

  1412. things in

  1413. this world.

  1414. Let us

  1415. seek them

  1416. not.

  1417. To have a

  1418. place,

  1419. a title,

  1420. a position

  1421. in society

  1422. is not

  1423. nearly so

  1424. important as

  1425. people think.

  1426. It is a

  1427. great sin

  1428. to be

  1429. covetous,

  1430. and worldly

  1431. and proud,

  1432. but it is

  1433. no sin to

  1434. be poor.

  1435. It matters

  1436. not so much

  1437. what money we

  1438. have and

  1439. where we

  1440. live as

  1441. what we

  1442. are in

  1443. the sight

  1444. of God.

  1445. Where are

  1446. we going

  1447. when we

  1448. die?

  1449. Shall we

  1450. live forever

  1451. in heaven?

  1452. These are the

  1453. main things

  1454. to which we

  1455. should attend.

  1456. I was in

  1457. McDonald's on

  1458. Friday,

  1459. I know it

  1460. was the

  1461. day of

  1462. fasting,

  1463. but I

  1464. ended up

  1465. studying at

  1466. the moment

  1467. so I'm

  1468. working in

  1469. different

  1470. coffee shops

  1471. and you

  1472. tend to

  1473. get to

  1474. mid-afternoon

  1475. and even

  1476. McDonald's

  1477. coffee tastes

  1478. good.

  1479. So I was

  1480. in there,

  1481. working away

  1482. and not

  1483. eating,

  1484. I promise

  1485. you.

  1486. It was a

  1487. remarkable

  1488. afternoon

  1489. really,

  1490. in that I

  1491. don't know

  1492. how it

  1493. happened,

  1494. but a

  1495. fight broke

  1496. out between

  1497. two girls.

  1498. One was a

  1499. Polish girl

  1500. and one

  1501. was a

  1502. Somali

  1503. girl.

  1504. I don't

  1505. know what

  1506. was said,

  1507. but it

  1508. erupted

  1509. very,

  1510. very quickly.

  1511. And the

  1512. words,

  1513. if I can

  1514. omit the

  1515. expletives,

  1516. are,

  1517. what are

  1518. you looking

  1519. at me,

  1520. you Polish?

  1521. To which

  1522. the response

  1523. was,

  1524. off you,

  1525. Somali

  1526. girl.

  1527. It's

  1528. quite weird,

  1529. I looked

  1530. around and

  1531. kind of

  1532. everybody was

  1533. just working,

  1534. well not working

  1535. normally,

  1536. but eating

  1537. there,

  1538. whatever it

  1539. is.

  1540. And it

  1541. struck me

  1542. doesn't it,

  1543. that both

  1544. immediately

  1545. went to

  1546. where they're

  1547. from,

  1548. and addressed

  1549. each other's

  1550. home country

  1551. with hate

  1552. and shame.

  1553. And both

  1554. were alleging

  1555. they are

  1556. outsiders who

  1557. don't belong.

  1558. And here

  1559. you have

  1560. Jesus,

  1561. don't you?

  1562. The

  1563. Messiah,

  1564. the Son

  1565. of God,

  1566. with humble,

  1567. shameful,

  1568. hated roots.

  1569. Do you

  1570. see how

  1571. Jesus is

  1572. willing to

  1573. stoop and

  1574. take the

  1575. lowest place?

  1576. I don't

  1577. know where

  1578. you're from.

  1579. I don't

  1580. know what

  1581. your background

  1582. is,

  1583. maybe you're

  1584. ashamed.

  1585. Maybe you

  1586. feel an

  1587. outsider,

  1588. even the

  1589. church.

  1590. But do you

  1591. see how

  1592. your saviour

  1593. is not

  1594. ashamed to

  1595. be smeared

  1596. with the

  1597. scummy name

  1598. of Nazareth.

  1599. And this

  1600. is our

  1601. encouragement

  1602. there.

  1603. That if

  1604. you have

  1605. in your

  1606. saviour a

  1607. fugitive,

  1608. a migrant,

  1609. a refugee,

  1610. who grew

  1611. up in a

  1612. despised

  1613. village,

  1614. do you

  1615. think that

  1616. maybe,

  1617. just maybe,

  1618. he might

  1619. be able to

  1620. understand you?

  1621. because the

  1622. centre of

  1623. this passage,

  1624. the centre

  1625. of Luke

    Luke 3 chapter mention

  1626. chapter 3,

  1627. is a

  1628. child.

  1629. And amidst

  1630. all the

  1631. geography,

  1632. what Matthew

  1633. wants to

  1634. show you

  1635. is a

  1636. child.

  1637. And don't

  1638. take your

  1639. eyes on

  1640. him.

  1641. And Matthew

  1642. says everywhere

  1643. he went,

  1644. he was a

  1645. fulfilment of

  1646. scripture.

  1647. Spurgeon

  1648. wrote,

  1649. our prince

  1650. steps along

  1651. a pathway

  1652. paved with

  1653. prophecies.

  1654. And he

  1655. is one

  1656. who is

  1657. humble.

  1658. And he

  1659. is one

  1660. who is

  1661. able to

  1662. take the

  1663. lowest

  1664. place.

  1665. Go to

  1666. Egypt.

  1667. Go to

  1668. Bethlehem.

  1669. Go to

  1670. Nazareth.

  1671. Let's

  1672. pray.

  1673. Heavenly

  1674. Father,

  1675. we thank

  1676. you for

  1677. your

  1678. word.

  1679. We thank

  1680. you that

  1681. though there

  1682. were many

  1683. human

  1684. writers,

  1685. there is

  1686. one

  1687. writer.

  1688. The

  1689. Holy

  1690. Spirit

  1691. inspires

  1692. men

  1693. who

  1694. wrote

  1695. your

  1696. word.

  1697. We thank

  1698. you that

  1699. the

  1700. author

  1701. of

  1702. scripture

  1703. is

  1704. God.

  1705. And as

  1706. we see

  1707. the

  1708. Old

  1709. Testament

  1710. and how

  1711. it

  1712. connects,

  1713. Lord,

  1714. and is

  1715. fulfilled in

  1716. your Son,

  1717. the Lord

  1718. Jesus Christ,

  1719. we marvel at

  1720. your wisdom.

  1721. We marvel at

  1722. your grace

  1723. and your

  1724. power.

  1725. We thank

  1726. you that

  1727. there is

  1728. hope.

  1729. There is

  1730. hope for

  1731. the grieving.

  1732. There is

  1733. hope for

  1734. the mourning.

  1735. we thank

  1736. you that

  1737. the Lord

  1738. Jesus is

  1739. your

  1740. firstborn

  1741. son,

  1742. that where

  1743. we have

  1744. failed,

  1745. he has

  1746. succeeded,

  1747. where Israel

  1748. was disobedient,

  1749. he was

  1750. obedient,

  1751. he is

  1752. your

  1753. faithful

  1754. son.

  1755. And we

  1756. thank you

  1757. that Christ

  1758. is not

  1759. ashamed to

  1760. call us

  1761. brothers.

  1762. We thank

  1763. you that

  1764. he came

  1765. from the

  1766. highest to

  1767. live amongst

  1768. the despised.

  1769. may we

  1770. never think

  1771. more of

  1772. ourselves

  1773. than we

  1774. are

  1775. Lord.

  1776. May we

  1777. rejoice that

  1778. there is a

  1779. welcome even

  1780. for us,

  1781. for people

  1782. like us.

  1783. For we

  1784. pray this in

  1785. Jesus' name.

  1786. Amen.
