  1. In your Bible of Matthew chapter 3, our second reading is taken from verses 13 to 17. Matthew chapter 3 is on page 808 in the church bibles.

Matthew 3 chapter mention Matthew 3 chapter mention

  2. ! Matthew chapter 3. Now the passage that Edith read to us really is the appearance of John the Baptist. And then in verses 13 to 17 you have the appearance of Jesus.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  3. Verse 13 reads, then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John to be baptised by him. John would have prevented him saying, I need to be baptised by you. And do you come to me? But Jesus answered him, let it be so now for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness.

  4. Then John consented. When Jesus was baptised, immediately he went up from the water and behold the heavens were opened to him.

  5. He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. And behold a voice from heaven said, this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased.

  6. When you read the Bible, one of the things that you need to look for is you need to look for things that don't fit.

  7. You need to look for things that jar.

  8. You need to look for things that seemingly don't go together.

  9. And I don't know whether you've picked that up between the first half of John 3 and the second half of John 3, but there's something there which doesn't fit.

  10. There's something there which doesn't go together.

  11. It's how you should feel when you come to the Lord's baptism.

  12. John the Baptist in the first half of the chapter has said, Jesus will baptise with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

  13. That this coming one, he is going to be the baptiser.

  14. And yet Jesus comes to the Jordan, to John, to be baptised by him.

  15. What's going on?

  16. I thought Jesus was the baptiser.

  17. That's what John the Baptist's message is.

  18. How come the baptiser is to be baptised by the Baptist?

  19. It doesn't seem to fit together.

  20. What are we to make of this baptised baptiser?

  21. What can we see in this baptised baptiser?

  22. First of all, Matthew chapter 3 shows us the emergency Jesus creates.

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  23. The emergency Jesus creates.

  24. And the reason for the emergency is found in verse 2.

  25. It's one word.

  26. John's word in verse 2.

  27. It is repent.

  28. Repent.

  29. For the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

  30. The kingdom of heaven has come near.

  31. Now when it says the kingdom of heaven, it doesn't mean heaven exactly.

  32. It means the kingdom that has its origin in heaven.

  33. The kingdom that is from God who is in heaven.

  34. And the kingdom of God has come near because the king of the kingdom is about to come near.

  35. Jesus is about to come to do his ministry and in his work.

  36. And that creates an urgency and an emergency.

  37. Their response must be they must repent.

  38. Israel was familiar with this Old Testament idea.

  39. The last book of the Old Testament, the book of Malachi.

  40. Malachi.

  41. The people in Malachi said they were really upset about their lot.

  42. They were upset the way things were and how things were going.

  43. And they said, where is the God of justice?

  44. Where is the God of justice?

  45. As if to say that the Lord needs to come and put things right and sort things out.

  46. And the Lord's response in Malachi 3 is, behold, I send my messenger.

  47. And he will prepare the way before me.

  48. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple.

  49. And the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.

  50. But then there was this issue.

  51. When the law that was promised in Malachi 3 actually arrived, here's the problem.

  52. Who can stand when he appears?

  53. And he says, I will draw near.

  54. I will come for judgment.

  55. The Lord's coming isn't all good news.

  56. There's this element of emergency and crisis.

  57. He's saying to the people in Malachi's day, he's saying, are you really sure that you want the Lord to come?

  58. Who can endure the day of his coming?

  59. There's this crisis and emergency.

  60. And the response that you need to make to his coming, John the Baptist says, is repent.

  61. Because the kingdom of heaven has come near.

  62. Now what does it mean to repent?

  63. It doesn't really mean just to be sorry for something.

  64. That is part.

  65. But to say sorry is not really repentance.

  66. In fact, the word sorry is not found in the Bible at all.

  67. It's not really just to change one's mind.

  68. That's what it's sometimes said.

  69. But that is from the essence.

  70. To repent is to turn the whole person from a wrong direction to a right direction.

  71. The classic statement is what we often use for our assurance of pardon in Isaiah 55.

  72. Where Isaiah says to the people, he says, seek the Lord while he may be found.

  73. Call upon him while he's near.

  74. And then let the wicked forsake his way.

  75. And the unrighteous man is false.

  76. And let him return to the Lord that he may have mercy on him.

  77. And to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

  78. That is the idea of repentance.

  79. It is a forsaking.

  80. It is a leaving of your wicked ways and your sinful thoughts.

  81. And a returning wholeheartedly, whole life to the Lord.

  82. And God wonderfully will have mercy.

  83. And abundantly pardon.

  84. And this repentance that John speaks with, speaks about, begins with this acknowledgement.

  85. It begins with this acknowledgement that I am unfit for the kingdom of heaven.

  86. That I am unfit to meet this king of the kingdom that is coming.

  87. That's what repentance is.

  88. Now you've got some picture of this emergency that John gives us.

  89. He gives us some snapshots.

  90. And he gives them to us in verse 10 and verse 12.

  91. He says, this emergency, this crisis is something like, let's call the picture in verse 10, Jesus the axe man.

  92. Look at verse 10.

  93. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the tree.

  94. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

  95. That's what Jesus' coming is like.

  96. He comes with an axe in his hand.

  97. It's going to be like the tree in Sphagata.

  98. Who comes with his chainsaw.

  99. And looks at the tree.

  100. And sees the tree is no longer bearing fruit.

  101. And he fires it up.

  102. And cuts down the tree.

  103. Any tree that doesn't bear fruit.

  104. That doesn't reflect repentance.

  105. Will be cut down.

  106. And already that's the case.

  107. Well let's see the second picture.

  108. Jesus the axe man.

  109. And then Jesus verse 12.

  110. Jesus the thresher.

  111. We're not farmers we.

  112. But verse 12 is the picture of a threshing floor.

  113. And there's a shovel.

  114. A winnowing shovel.

  115. And the farmer takes the grain.

  116. That's been cut up.

  117. And is on the threshing floor.

  118. And he throws it up into the air.

  119. And because it's a windy day.

  120. The wind blows it.

  121. And it carries the chaff off.

  122. But the grain falls to the ground.

  123. Because it's heavier.

  124. What's that a picture of?

  125. It's a picture of separation.

  126. And John says.

  127. Here is one who is stronger than I am.

  128. And he's going to do that kind of cutting down.

  129. And separating.

  130. He's going to bring division.

  131. He's coming to bring.

  132. And to gather a people to himself.

  133. He gathers his wheat into the barn.

  134. But as he gathers his wheat into the barn.

  135. He separates it from the chaff.

  136. And he throws the chaff into the fire.

  137. So you've got these pictures.

  138. Of an emergency.

  139. Whose emergency is this?

  140. Who needs to be concerned about it?

  141. Well verse 5 is the shock isn't it?

  142. Then Jerusalem.

  143. And all Judea.

  144. And all the region about the Jordan.

  145. Were going out to him.

  146. They were going out to him.

  147. And the reason they were going out to him.

  148. Is because they were baptised by him.

  149. In the river Jordan.

  150. Confessing their sins.

  151. That's strange.

  152. Jews.

  153. There's a practice.

  154. In Sydney.

  155. In evidence probably at this time.

  156. And before called proselyte baptism.

  157. The Jews had a practice.

  158. If you were a Gentile.

  159. Or you were a pagan.

  160. Who wanted to become a Jew.

  161. Someone who wanted to convert to Judaism.

  162. You had to go through this practice.

  163. Where the person.

  164. Could go through a certain procedure.

  165. In order to become a member.

  166. Of the covenant people.

  167. In later times.

  168. Even as early as John the Baptist.

  169. It consisted in three steps.

  170. If it was a male convert.

  171. There would be circumcision.

  172. And then there would be a baptism.

  173. A proselyte baptism.

  174. And then you would make an offering.

  175. And then the person.

  176. Having done those three steps.

  177. The circumcision.

  178. The proselyte baptism.

  179. And the offering.

  180. Then that person was counted.

  181. As a partner people of God.

  182. The covenant people.

  183. And that's what happens.

  184. When pagans.

  185. Wanted to join.

  186. Israel.

  187. It was pagans.

  188. Who were baptized.

  189. In order to join the people of God.

  190. Pagans.

  191. But what do you have here?

  192. Can you see it?

  193. In verse 5.

  194. It is.

  195. The people of God.

  196. You have God's covenant people.

  197. You have Jews.

  198. You have Jews.

  199. Who.

  200. Being baptized.

  201. Confessing their sin.

  202. They were the ones.

  203. Who were saying.

  204. We're not fit.

  205. For this kingdom.

  206. That is coming.

  207. And we acknowledge.

  208. That that is a strange thing.

  209. Of course.

  210. It's difficult.

  211. Isn't it?

  212. To get Israel.

  213. To see that.

  214. And John seems to be.

  215. Very concerned.

  216. About the group.

  217. In verse 7 to 9.

  218. He sees the Saradices.

  219. And the Pharisees.

  220. And he addresses them.

  221. Because these people.

  222. Think that they don't have.

  223. Any need for repentance.

  224. They look down.

  225. On John the Baptist.

  226. I think John the Baptist.

  227. Who is he?

  228. He's a Johnny.

  229. He's coming from nowhere.

  230. Isn't he?

  231. They look down.

  232. It's too bad.

  233. That John the Baptist.

  234. Wasn't educated.

  235. Or he only had a few years.

  236. In our.

  237. Semory.

  238. It might have refined him.

  239. A little bit.

  240. It might have polished him up.

  241. Otherwise.

  242. This guy.

  243. John the Baptist.

  244. Everywhere he goes.

  245. He creates friction.

  246. Everywhere he goes.

  247. Doesn't he?

  248. And so John sees.

  249. These Pharisees.

  250. These lay.

  251. Spiritual leaders.

  252. And the Sadducees.

  253. The priestly ones.

  254. The clergy.

  255. And when he sees them.

  256. Coming to his place of baptism.

  257. He says.

  258. Do you know what you are?

  259. You're a bunch of snakes.

  260. You're a bunch of snakes.

  261. Who warned you.

  262. To flee from the wrath to come.

  263. Do ministers and elders.

  264. And deacons.

  265. Like to be spoken to like that.

  266. He says to them.

  267. You need to bring forth fruit.

  268. Fruit that reflects.

  269. Repentance in your life.

  270. Do you remember what repentance is?

  271. It is a sorrow.

  272. It is a forsaking.

  273. It is a turning away.

  274. And a turning to God.

  275. You need to show that in your life.

  276. And don't you dare begin to say.

  277. We've got Abraham as our father.

  278. For I tell you.

  279. God can raise up children from Abraham.

  280. Out of these stones.

  281. There was probably nothing.

  282. In the popular mindset.

  283. Of Jesus' day.

  284. So automatic.

  285. As the merit.

  286. And the benefit.

  287. That Abraham conveyed.

  288. On his people Israel.

  289. That's not everyone.

  290. But there was an element.

  291. In the popular Jewish mindset.

  292. Of the day.

  293. That all Israel.

  294. All Israel.

  295. Had a share.

  296. In the world to come.

  297. And the reason why.

  298. Israel had a share.

  299. In the glory of the world to come.

  300. Was because their connection.

  301. To Abraham.

  302. There was one little rabbi.

  303. He drew a picture of Abraham.

  304. Seated at the gate of Gehenna.

  305. Of hell.

  306. Just in case.

  307. Some Israelite.

  308. By mistake.

  309. Might be consigned.

  310. To Gehenna.

  311. And Abraham was seated at the gate.

  312. In order.

  313. To keep any Jew.

  314. From having to enter hell.

  315. If you have Abraham.

  316. As your father.

  317. If you are descended from him.

  318. Among the people.

  319. You are immune.

  320. From any judgment.

  321. Or any need.

  322. From repentance.

  323. Gents.

  324. And John the Baptist says.

  325. No.

  326. This is your emergency.

  327. You need this.

  328. He's trying to get through to them.

  329. Do you remember.

  330. When you'd play as children.

  331. And you'd play a game of children.

  332. You'd be shooting guns and arrows.

  333. Or.

  334. I don't know what else you'd do.

  335. But you'd be playing there.

  336. And then suddenly.

  337. Would kind of.

  338. They would.

  339. They would put on a pretend.

  340. Bulletproof vest.

  341. Wouldn't they?

  342. And so.

  343. It was like their.

  344. Their.

  345. It was like their bullets.

  346. Couldn't hurt them.

  347. You see it don't you.

  348. In the Incredibles.

  349. Have you seen that film.

  350. Children in the Incredibles.

  351. There's a shield.

  352. That one of the children.

  353. He puts over him.

  354. And so.

  355. Nothing.

  356. Can.

  357. Nothing.

  358. Can.

  359. I think we need to pray.

  360. To.

  361. Janet.

  362. Is not.

  363. Very well.

  364. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

  365. I want to do.

  366. Would you.

  367. Have a look.

  368. Let's pray.

  369. Let's bow our heads in prayer.

  370. Heavenly Father.

  371. We.

  372. We.

  373. Want to pray.

  374. For your help.

  375. And your care.

  376. For our sister.

  377. Father.

  378. We thank you.

  379. For those.

  380. Who have.

  381. Medical skills.

  382. We pray.

  383. That you would.

  384. Bless.

  385. Them now.

  386. And we thank you.

  387. So much.

  388. For your loving care.

  389. And your concern.

  390. We pray.

  391. That.

  392. You would.

  393. Be with.

  394. Uh.

  395. Chan it now.

  396. For we pray.

  397. In Jesus name.

  398. Amen.

  399. Let's just take a moment.

  400. And.

  401. And.

  402. let's lift the Lord in prayer again

  403. let's pray

  404. Holy Father we have

  405. already confessed this morning that all things are in your hands

  406. and we thank you that there is nothing that is outside of your control

  407. and we thank you for your love and care, we thank you for Terry and Janet

  408. for the blessing that they are

  409. and we pray that this issue would not be a major one

  410. we pray that it would be

  411. Janet would be able to get the care that she needs

  412. we pray particularly for Terry that you would strengthen him

  413. and be with him

  414. keep them from anxiety

  415. Holy Father we pray now that as we continue to look at your words

  416. that you would speak to us

  417. our hearts are worried and concerned for our sister who we love

  418. but we pray that you might speak to us through your word

  419. and you might help us

  420. help us and speak to us, bring us comfort and strength

  421. for we pray in Jesus name

  422. Amen

  423. and so they thought didn't they that repentance didn't apply to them

  424. and the danger is for you and I that actually we can feel the same

  425. can't we

  426. we can think I've been baptized

  427. I'm a Presbyterian

  428. I'm a Baptist

  429. and it doesn't really apply to me

  430. I have Calvin as my father

  431. and we need to realise don't we that God can raise children out of the chairs that you're sitting on

  432. out of these walls

  433. God can raise Presbyterians out of this floor

  434. and we must never think

  435. that this repentance

  436. doesn't press in upon us

  437. and so I need to ask you today

  438. I need to ask you

  439. have you ever done this?

  440. have you ever repented?

  441. you know the word in verse 2

  442. it says isn't it

  443. repent for the kingdom of heaven

  444. is at hand

  445. and that is present continuous

  446. it's not just initial

  447. it's live a life of repentance

  448. and that is what John is calling us to

  449. and Jesus said the same thing

  450. Jesus is calling you and I

  451. to a life that is a constant turning away from wickedness

  452. and turning away from our iniquities

  453. and turning to God

  454. and one of the things we learn as Christians

  455. that we realise

  456. and as we face Jesus coming

  457. we realise that we are not fit for the kingdom of heaven

  458. and I am not fit to meet the king

  459. and it is only by his mercy isn't it?

  460. it's only by his mercy

  461. that I have any reason to stand before him at all

  462. and as you grow in grace

  463. and as you grow in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus

  464. and the better that you get to know him

  465. you will probably find that sense more and more

  466. that you need repentance

  467. it seems an interesting mark isn't it?

  468. that when you grow in grace

  469. you have a clearer and deeper insight

  470. into how corrupt your heart is

  471. Archibald Alexander in the 18th century

  472. 19th century

  473. he gave it the Christian life as a picture of a room

  474. and the room is completely dark

  475. and it's utterly filthy

  476. and you know that you're standing in the room

  477. and you know that it's dirty

  478. and there's a little stream of light

  479. and you can see some of the filth

  480. enough of the filth

  481. to know it's dirty

  482. and the more light that comes in

  483. the more you see how stinking it is

  484. and the amount of filth you see

  485. is related to how much light comes in

  486. and isn't that the way of the Christian life?

  487. the more light that we have

  488. the more nearer we come to the Lord Jesus

  489. the more we know of his word

  490. the more we see of our sin

  491. and we see how unfit we are

  492. and how unworthy we are

  493. to be in the kingdom of God

  494. now we need to watch that don't we?

  495. we need to watch that

  496. because it's really easy to fake it

  497. and there are phonies out there

  498. spiritual phonies

  499. that are constantly telling you

  500. about how terrible and evil they are

  501. they're a plague

  502. and they do it to kind of carry favour with men

  503. so we think oh aren't they godly?

  504. we don't have to share in that

  505. but I do think we need to realise

  506. as Christians that the longer we go on

  507. it is a life of repentance

  508. you are not for this kingdom

  509. the second thing I want you to see

  510. is in verses 13 to 15

  511. just look at the place where Jesus stands

  512. he stands by the Jordan

  513. and he comes to John to be baptised by him

  514. and this puzzle

  515. John says

  516. what are you doing?

  517. verse 14

  518. coming to me to be baptised

  519. I need to be baptised

  520. by you and your coming to me

  521. it doesn't make sense does it?

  522. you don't need to be baptised

  523. I need to be

  524. and Jesus explains to him

  525. no no no

  526. in one sense you're perfectly right

  527. but you see John

  528. it is necessary

  529. for us at this time

  530. to carry out God's will

  531. to fulfil righteousness

  532. to let it take place

  533. and the place where Jesus stands

  534. why is that such a problem?

  535. well look at verse 6

  536. look at the text

  537. verse 6

  538. and verse 11

  539. who is this baptism of John the Baptist for?

  540. it is for sinners

  541. those Jews that went out to him for baptism

  542. they were doing something

  543. they were confessing their sins

  544. and John says

  545. in verse 11

  546. I baptise you with water

  547. for repentance

  548. and so what on earth

  549. is Jesus

  550. the sinless lamb of God?

  551. sorry

  552. good news

  553. Janet is

  554. I think

  555. they don't think it's a stroke

  556. just too hot

  557. and

  558. and

  559. and

  560. and

  561. and

  562. and

  563. not as bad

  564. as we fear

  565. is that alright?

  566. can we have a bit of air in this room?

  567. I don't want that to happen again

  568. is that alright?

  569. let's turn it down

  570. you don't

  571. right

  572. now you've not listened to the last 10 minutes

  573. but we'll try and get back there

  574. okay

  575. so who was the

  576. who was the baptism of repentance for?

  577. it is for those who

  578. had sin

  579. a story about Shamil

  580. isn't it?

  581. Shamil was a guerrilla

  582. fighting against the

  583. Tsarist regime in Russia

  584. in about 1870

  585. and Shamil

  586. it wasn't just Shamil

  587. and his men

  588. it was their

  589. wives and their families

  590. there was this whole

  591. kind of little community

  592. fighting against the Russians

  593. and there was this

  594. tight little universe

  595. of kind of bandits

  596. outlaws

  597. but something happened

  598. in Shamil's society

  599. someone stole

  600. and in a tight little community

  601. no one knew it

  602. no one knew who did it

  603. everything was coming

  604. unglued

  605. by suspicion

  606. Shamil issued a law

  607. thou shalt not steal

  608. and there was a penalty

  609. he says

  610. whoever is caught stealing

  611. there will be a hundred lashes

  612. for the one who is found stealing

  613. well you know the story

  614. a couple of days later

  615. it is found to be his mother

  616. and so there is a dilemma

  617. he has to make sure

  618. his law stands

  619. he can't say

  620. that's my mother

  621. it can't happen to her

  622. but he also loves his mother

  623. doesn't he

  624. he has affection for her

  625. he doesn't want her

  626. to undergo the lashes

  627. so he shuts himself up

  628. in his tent

  629. in the middle of this kind of

  630. outlawed tent

  631. for three days

  632. and after three days

  633. he comes out of his tent

  634. and he says

  635. the law must be upheld

  636. and she must be punished

  637. and she must receive

  638. the hundred lashes

  639. and rightly so

  640. because you can't ignore

  641. the demands of the law

  642. and so there is justice

  643. and after she received

  644. three lashes

  645. Shamil has

  646. his real solution

  647. his real solution

  648. was that he took

  649. his mother away

  650. and he

  651. the leader of that community

  652. took

  653. the ninety-seven

  654. lashes

  655. himself

  656. he commanded

  657. that all of those lashes

  658. would be given

  659. but he would bear them

  660. so the law was upheld

  661. the law was upheld

  662. and love was satisfied

  663. but it was because

  664. Shamil stood

  665. in the place

  666. of the offended

  667. and you might say

  668. well that's a really good

  669. illustration of what

  670. Jesus did on the cross

  671. but what you need to see

  672. is that is what

  673. Jesus is doing

  674. that is baptism

  675. don't you see baptism

  676. is what sinners

  677. need to have done to them

  678. and in verse eleven

  679. and verse six

  680. when Jesus

  681. who didn't need

  682. to be baptized

  683. because he's not a sinner

  684. when he comes

  685. and says

  686. John baptized me

  687. he says

  688. I'm standing

  689. in the place

  690. of sinners

  691. John White

  692. in one of his books

  693. refers to

  694. one of the experiences

  695. he had as a medical student

  696. I've told him this story before

  697. he missed

  698. a practical class

  699. on sexually transmitted diseases

  700. and because John White

  701. had missed the class

  702. he had to go to the class

  703. at night

  704. at a time when students

  705. didn't normally go

  706. to the STD clinic

  707. and as he entered the clinic

  708. a male nurse met him

  709. there was a line of men

  710. there waiting for treatment

  711. and he said to the male nurse

  712. I want to see the doctor

  713. that's what everyone wants

  714. stand in line

  715. said the nurse

  716. ah but you don't understand

  717. I'm a medical student

  718. doesn't matter

  719. you've got it

  720. the same way as everyone else

  721. stand in line

  722. in the end

  723. he says

  724. I managed to explain to him

  725. while I was there

  726. but I can still feel

  727. that sense of shame

  728. that made me balk

  729. at standing in line

  730. with men who had BD

  731. and yet Jesus stood in line

  732. as he lined up

  733. on the Jordan River

  734. the Holy Son of God

  735. the Holy One of God

  736. lined up with a bunch of sinners

  737. waiting to be baptized

  738. and he identified himself

  739. with us

  740. he publicly identified

  741. with those he came to save

  742. he was no sinner himself

  743. but he identified

  744. with sinners

  745. and took his first step

  746. on that career

  747. that was going to take him

  748. to the cross

  749. it's as if Matthew

  750. could have put in

  751. a verse

  752. at this point

  753. it's as if Matthew

  754. could have put in

  755. the verse

  756. in order that the words

  757. of the prophet

  758. might be fulfilled

  759. he was numbered

  760. with the transgressors

  761. note the place he stood

  762. thirdly and lastly

  763. note the assurance

  764. Jesus receives

  765. verses 16 and 17

  766. there's two things

  767. immediately after

  768. Jesus is baptized

  769. there's the equipping

  770. with God's power

  771. by the Holy Spirit

  772. the dove comes down

  773. the Holy Spirit

  774. comes down

  775. in the form of the dove

  776. but I want us to focus

  777. in verse 17

  778. on the expression

  779. of God's favour

  780. that voice said

  781. this is my son

  782. the one I love

  783. and I'm delighted

  784. with him

  785. and I wonder

  786. what those words

  787. would have meant

  788. for the Lord Jesus

  789. maybe you don't often

  790. think God speaks

  791. in such a positive way

  792. or perhaps

  793. maybe you're not used

  794. to seeing that tone

  795. of delight

  796. in God's voice

  797. but did you hear

  798. what he said

  799. he said

  800. here is my son

  801. here is my son

  802. whom I love

  803. and I am delighted

  804. in him

  805. it's a bit like

  806. Genesis 1

  807. do you remember

  808. Genesis 1

  809. in the creation

  810. account

  811. it's a phrase

  812. that keeps on

  813. being repeated

  814. isn't it

  815. and God saw

  816. that it was

  817. good

  818. and several times

  819. and God saw

  820. that it was

  821. good

  822. and God saw

  823. what he'd made

  824. and it was good

  825. and it was good

  826. and it was good

  827. and in chapter 1

  828. verse 31

  829. God stands back

  830. and he sees

  831. everything that he's

  832. made

  833. and he says

  834. that is very

  835. good

  836. if you can put it

  837. in picture form

  838. it says

  839. it's almost as if

  840. God the creator

  841. and the designer

  842. and the artist

  843. he stands back

  844. from his work

  845. and he looks at it

  846. and he says

  847. that is great

  848. that is very

  849. very good

  850. I like that

  851. I really like that

  852. here's my son

  853. the one

  854. I love

  855. I delighted

  856. him

  857. was that not

  858. a great

  859. source

  860. of assurance

  861. for Jesus

  862. imagine how

  863. he must have

  864. felt

  865. when he heard

  866. those words

  867. but it seems

  868. to me

  869. that it's

  870. no wonder

  871. that when you

  872. come to

  873. John's gospel

  874. in John

    John 16:32

  875. chapter 16

  876. verse 32

  877. John 16

    John 16:32

  878. verse 32

  879. this is what

  880. Jesus says

  881. he says

  882. behold the hour

  883. is coming

  884. indeed it has

  885. come

  886. when you will

  887. be scattered

  888. you disciples

  889. you will leave

  890. me

  891. you will be

  892. scattered

  893. each to his

  894. own home

  895. and you will

  896. leave me

  897. alone

  898. yet I am

  899. not alone

  900. for the

  901. father is

  902. with me

  903. I think

  904. that is

  905. the fruit

  906. of a

  907. deep

  908. assurance

  909. that he's

  910. been given

  911. in his

  912. baptism

  913. and is

  914. this written

  915. for his

  916. sake

  917. alone

  918. is it

  919. only for

  920. Jesus

  921. that this

  922. is written

  923. this is

  924. my son

  925. whom I

  926. love

  927. with him

  928. I'm

  929. well

  930. pleased

  931. doesn't

  932. it also

  933. include us

  934. I know

  935. that we

  936. are not

  937. sons and

  938. daughters of

  939. God

  940. in the

  941. same way

  942. that Jesus

  943. is the

  944. unique

  945. son of

  946. God

  947. but it

  948. is true

  949. isn't it

  950. that we

  951. are the

  952. adopted

  953. children of

  954. God

  955. the Bible

  956. does call

  957. us

  958. sons of

  959. God

  960. Romans 8

  961. 14 and

  962. 15

  963. and it's

  964. true

  965. that just

  966. as God

  967. calls Jesus

  968. the one

  969. he loves

  970. or the

  971. beloved

  972. in verse

  973. 17 of

  974. Romans 8

  975. the apostle

  976. Paul

  977. writing to

  978. the Christians

  979. in Rome

  980. he writes

  981. to those

  982. plural

  983. who are

  984. loved

  985. by God

  986. beloved

  987. by God

  988. it's the

  989. same word

  990. and so

  991. the father

  992. who loves

  993. his only

  994. son

  995. especially

  996. loves his

  997. sons and

  998. daughters

  999. who his

  1000. son has

  1001. brought to

  1002. him

  1003. there's

  1004. something

  1005. about that

  1006. type of

  1007. assurance

  1008. that nothing

  1009. can erase

  1010. I don't

  1011. think this

  1012. verse is

  1013. here to

  1014. tell

  1015. parents

  1016. to tell

  1017. children

  1018. how much

  1019. they love

  1020. them

  1021. that is

  1022. a great

  1023. thing to

  1024. do there

  1025. isn't it

  1026. my father

  1027. is here

  1028. this morning

  1029. I don't

  1030. really

  1031. talk to

  1032. him as

  1033. well

  1034. but there

  1035. are times

  1036. aren't there

  1037. when a

  1038. father or

  1039. a mother

  1040. expresses

  1041. their love

  1042. and appreciation

  1043. for a

  1044. child

  1045. and we

  1046. remember

  1047. it

  1048. that wasn't

  1049. in your

  1050. family

  1051. I'm

  1052. terribly

  1053. terribly

  1054. sorry

  1055. but the

  1056. wonderful

  1057. thing about

  1058. the gospel

  1059. is maybe

  1060. it wasn't

  1061. in your

  1062. family

  1063. but God

  1064. says to

  1065. you this

  1066. morning

  1067. if you

  1068. have faith

  1069. in the

  1070. Lord Jesus

  1071. Christ

  1072. that is

  1073. my son

  1074. that is

  1075. my daughter

  1076. with whom

  1077. I'm

  1078. well

  1079. pleased

  1080. there's

  1081. something

  1082. about that

  1083. type of

  1084. assurance

  1085. that nothing

  1086. can erase

  1087. you never

  1088. know do you

  1089. the sense

  1090. of security

  1091. and assurance

  1092. that a mere

  1093. word of

  1094. relationship

  1095. can give to

  1096. someone

  1097. many of us

  1098. can bear

  1099. testimony to

  1100. that the

  1101. assurance

  1102. that we

  1103. received

  1104. and the

  1105. sense of

  1106. security

  1107. that we

  1108. ought to

  1109. have

  1110. and yes

  1111. that comes

  1112. better less

  1113. or more

  1114. with a

  1115. parent

  1116. but it

  1117. comes

  1118. powerfully

  1119. to us

  1120. from God

  1121. by adoption

  1122. through Jesus

  1123. Christ

  1124. that he

  1125. has called

  1126. you a son

  1127. or a daughter

  1128. and then in

  1129. the light

  1130. of that

  1131. assurance

  1132. and security

  1133. in the midst

  1134. of darkness

  1135. and trial

  1136. and fear

  1137. and anxiety

  1138. which you

  1139. may even

  1140. be feeling

  1141. right now

  1142. can you

  1143. not say

  1144. as Terry

  1145. and Janet

  1146. can say

  1147. this morning

  1148. I am

  1149. not alone

  1150. for the

  1151. father is

  1152. with me

  1153. and all

  1154. of this

  1155. you have

  1156. and enjoy

  1157. because the

  1158. baptiser

  1159. is baptised

  1160. let's pray

  1161. holy father

  1162. we will

  1163. remember

  1164. this sermon

  1165. for a long

  1166. time

  1167. and yet

  1168. we want to

  1169. pray that

  1170. this assurance

  1171. that you

  1172. give

  1173. you give

  1174. to your

  1175. son

  1176. whom you

  1177. love

  1178. whom you

  1179. are delighted

  1180. in

  1181. we pray

  1182. that by

  1183. faith

  1184. we might

  1185. claim those

  1186. words as

  1187. our own

  1188. that we

  1189. would be a

  1190. people that

  1191. repent

  1192. turn from

  1193. our wicked

  1194. ways

  1195. and turn

  1196. to you

  1197. but also

  1198. we would

  1199. know that

  1200. as your

  1201. people we

  1202. are loved

  1203. that we

  1204. live with

  1205. that tension

  1206. and we

  1207. delight

  1208. in that

  1209. father again

  1210. we pray for

  1211. terry and

  1212. janet we

  1213. pray that

  1214. you would

  1215. be very

  1216. near them

  1217. we pray

  1218. that you

  1219. would draw

  1220. near them

  1221. and strengthen

  1222. them and

  1223. restore them

  1224. fully to

  1225. health in

  1226. jesus name

  1227. amen
