  1. And open up your Bibles to Matthew chapter 5 and verse 27-30. Matthew chapter 5 is on page 810 if you've got a church Bible.

Matthew 5 chapter mention Matthew 5 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. I spoke at a conference a couple of years ago and there was a panel. I was the third guy on the panel.

  4. And the question was, what do you think is the biggest threat facing the church today?

  5. What do you think is the biggest threat facing the church today?

  6. First guy said, internet pornography.

  7. Second guy said, internet pornography.

  8. I said, sin and sin.

  9. And I do want you to hold that thought because I do think pornography is a huge problem.

  10. If you look at the statistics, it's quite terrifying amongst men and growing amongst women.

  11. If you look in the church, the statistics are terrifying equally amongst people who are in church.

  12. There will be people in this room this morning that are addicted to internet pornography.

  13. There will be people that are struggling with it.

  14. And yet I want to say to you, and I want to say to myself, that is not the big issue.

  15. It's not the big issue. Don't buy that it's the big issue.

  16. Because the big issue is, when you come to something like pornography, is pornography is never actually the problem.

  17. And that's what we're going to see when we get there today.

  18. And Jesus is explaining the law of God in all its richness, in all its fullness, in all its beauty.

  19. And when he comes to the seventh commandment, he is showing you what does it mean to not commit adultery.

  20. And he's showing you and I, what does it look like to live a life where our righteousness goes beyond the most religious people of their day, the scribes and Pharisees.

  21. And so what Jesus is doing, Jesus is pointing you and I to the kind of obedience that will fulfil this command.

  22. He's not showing you how to become a Christian.

  23. He's not telling you this is the way you get into the kingdom of God.

  24. And he's saying, as somebody who is part of a follower of the Lord Jesus, this is how you ought to live.

  25. Two things.

  26. What sort of obedience is it?

  27. Number one, it's a repentant obedience.

  28. A repentant obedience.

  29. Look at verses 27 and 28.

  30. You've heard that it was said, you shall not commit adultery.

  31. Verse 28.

  32. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  33. He's not countering the same commandments.

  34. He's not repealing it.

  35. He's saying there is more depth to it than you ever realised.

  36. Judaism, at the time, it did recognise that there was a certain depth to the law.

  37. But it wasn't just external obedience.

  38. There had to be an inner obedience.

  39. There had to be a purity of mind.

  40. The religious leaders of the day, they recognised that.

  41. It's not as if they were just centring on not committing the very act of adultery.

  42. But Jesus is saying to you, you need to be very careful in thinking that just because there's been an external obedience.

  43. An external, outward kind of obedience.

  44. Be careful of that.

  45. Because Jesus says the commandment is much, much deeper than that.

  46. Jesus says, listen to me, verse 28.

  47. I tell you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  48. We need to realise what Jesus is saying.

  49. First of all, there's his authority.

  50. Can you see that?

  51. I say to you,

  52. that every single one of his followers is under his authority.

  53. But notice he's not forbidding looking.

  54. He's not saying that it's forbidden for a man to look at a woman.

  55. God has created a world, a universe of beauty.

  56. A lot of beauty, isn't he?

  57. And a lot of beauty is found in those creatures called women.

  58. And I'm sure God does not want that beauty to be unappreciated.

  59. And Jesus is not saying here that you can look in a legitimate way.

  60. Especially in the area of sexual desire.

  61. There is a legitimate God-given desire.

  62. To be fulfilled, isn't it?

  63. The Bible says,

  64. The answer for sexual relationships,

  65. it is between a man and his wife.

  66. In the covenant, lifelong covenant of marriage.

  67. So it's a bit like the second commandment.

  68. Do you remember we looked at that last week?

  69. And it said,

  70. Whoever is angry with his brother is liable to judgment.

  71. Does that mean you can never be angry?

  72. We know, don't we, that there is a legitimate anger.

  73. There's a time when you ought to be angry,

  74. and it's right to be angry.

  75. But we also know that our sinful nature is such that

  76. even legitimate anger,

  77. even righteous anger,

  78. it's so easy, isn't it, to go over that line.

  79. And it becomes illegitimate,

  80. and it becomes sinful,

  81. and it becomes an ungodly anger.

  82. And so it's very difficult.

  83. You can't always separate them.

  84. But Jesus is not supposing that all looking,

  85. not all of a man looking at a woman,

  86. or a woman looking at a man,

  87. is sinful.

  88. What is he doing?

  89. Well, the text helps us, doesn't it?

  90. He says,

  91. I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman

  92. with lustful intent,

  93. looks at a woman in order to lust,

  94. with the purpose of lusting,

  95. with the purpose of depersonalising that person,

  96. and seeing them as an object.

  97. And notice he goes to the source of it.

  98. He says,

  99. if you have a man or a woman,

  100. but he looks at a man or a woman,

  101. a man or a woman,

  102. in order to lust,

  103. to feed his lust,

  104. to possess her when she's not his,

  105. if he looks in order to lust,

  106. he's already committed adultery with her in his heart.

  107. And so there's the problem.

  108. And there is your problem.

  109. And there is my problem.

  110. It's the heart, isn't it?

  111. It's a cliche,

  112. but the heart of the problem is the problem of the human heart.

  113. Do you remember Matthew chapter 19 and verse 20?

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  114. Out of the heart comes what?

  115. Evil thoughts.

  116. Got that?

  117. Evil thoughts.

  118. Then what does he mention?

  119. He mentions murder,

  120. adultery,

  121. immorality,

  122. theft,

  123. false witnessing,

  124. slander,

  125. etc.

  126. These things defile a man.

  127. But it's out of the heart.

  128. And so do you see that?

  129. This morning,

  130. your issue is not so much with,

  131. maybe,

  132. internet pornography.

  133. It's with your heart and my heart.

  134. The centre of our being is awry and perverse.

  135. It's the sinful nature,

  136. and it's from the heart

  137. that these things come in other words.

  138. And so you can take a commandment,

  139. like the seventh commandment,

  140. do not commit adultery.

  141. And you may keep it externally,

  142. and you may keep it literally,

  143. but you may have committed adultery because of the way that you feed your lust in your imagination,

  144. and in your thinking.

  145. And you dwell on the images that you've seen and watched,

  146. and you think on it,

  147. and you replay it.

  148. You store it in your memory,

  149. and you commit adultery in your heart.

  150. Do you see how deeply Jesus goes?

  151. That's why when Jesus expounds God's law,

  152. and we see how deep it cuts,

  153. that we're driven back to the start of the Sermon on the Mount,

  154. because we realise that it can only be those who mourn.

  155. Who mourn over their sin.

  156. Chapter 5 and verse 4.

  157. And as you understand this section on lust,

  158. and we're going to obey it,

  159. it is always going to be a repentant obedience.

  160. And I think if we're honest this morning,

  161. and we look at this commandment as Jesus looks at it,

  162. and we go beneath the external,

  163. and the conformity,

  164. and we go to the depths of our imagination,

  165. and our hearts, and our desires,

  166. we have to confess, don't we,

  167. that we are a congregation of adulterers,

  168. and adulteresses.

  169. And fornicators.

  170. And so do you see what Jesus is driving at here?

  171. You can have, this morning,

  172. a great sense of external conformity.

  173. But what are the depths?

  174. What are the depths?

  175. This fellow was a vegetarian.

  176. He was a teetotaler.

  177. And he was a non-smoker.

  178. And he actually gave people lectures on not smoking.

  179. Do you know who that vegetarian,

  180. teetotaling, non-smoking man was?

  181. Adolf Hitler.

  182. You can't tell, can you, much from externals.

  183. You can't tell much about the depths

  184. from the outside.

  185. World War II in 1944.

  186. About 3,000 German soldiers got behind the American lines.

  187. They had American uniforms and American cheats.

  188. They had American ID.

  189. They spoke with American accents.

  190. They smoked American cigarettes.

  191. They used American swear words.

  192. And what were they doing?

  193. They got behind the lines,

  194. and they stirred up trouble.

  195. They changed road signs.

  196. And they took down warning signs off minefields.

  197. They watched and they plotted

  198. American troop reinforcements

  199. and movements and so on.

  200. And finally, when it got so bad,

  201. the kind of American counterintelligence corps

  202. had to crack down.

  203. There was chaos behind their lines.

  204. So any jeep that pulled up

  205. at checkpoint had a gun.

  206. The driver had a gun put in their ribs

  207. and he was grilled

  208. until he found out

  209. were they for real or not.

  210. You couldn't just ask them

  211. where they were from

  212. because they had a good amount of knowledge.

  213. You had to sniff them out

  214. with questions

  215. that only a true American would know.

  216. Like,

  217. where's the windy city

  218. or something like that?

  219. What is beet pan pizza

  220. or something like that?

  221. And that would give you an idea

  222. whether they were for real.

  223. On one occasion,

  224. there was a group of lieutenants

  225. sitting in a jeep,

  226. supposedly,

  227. and Americans

  228. watching a troop of reinforcements

  229. rush by

  230. and someone went over

  231. to check them out.

  232. They had legitimate dog tags.

  233. Their papers were checked out.

  234. They even had army camp experiences,

  235. they could tell.

  236. They said that they'd trade

  237. at Camp Hood.

  238. And it looked so legitimate.

  239. And finally,

  240. they were asked one more question

  241. before they went on.

  242. Ever been to Texas?

  243. Then said,

  244. no,

  245. stick them up.

  246. Camp Hood is in Texas.

  247. See,

  248. they had to go really deep,

  249. didn't they,

  250. to get beneath the surface.

  251. on the surface.

  252. On the surface,

  253. it looked so legitimate.

  254. And it took so much to see

  255. that underneath,

  256. actually,

  257. they were a phony.

  258. And the law of God

  259. is like that.

  260. We can conform to it

  261. and we can outwardly

  262. conform to it.

  263. But how deep

  264. it cuts

  265. our imaginations.

  266. and if you are a disciple,

  267. if you are a follower

  268. of the Lord Jesus,

  269. then you realise

  270. that even as a disciple

  271. and a follower of Christ,

  272. how far

  273. my obedience

  274. comes from

  275. really conforming

  276. to God's law.

  277. And when I see

  278. the true intent

  279. of God's law,

  280. I realise

  281. that I need

  282. a saviour.

  283. And as a Christian,

  284. if you've been a Christian

  285. any length of time

  286. and you study God's law

  287. and you love God's law,

  288. you will realise that

  289. again and again

  290. and again and again.

  291. I need saving.

  292. And if we are going to seek

  293. to obey this commandment,

  294. we must not be naive

  295. for every single one of us.

  296. It will be a repentant obedience.

  297. And I think one of the functions

  298. that Jesus has

  299. in the Sermon on the Mount

  300. is that it brings

  301. Christian people

  302. to realise

  303. how deep the roots

  304. of sin are.

  305. How deep

  306. the roots of sin are

  307. in our own imaginations

  308. and thoughts

  309. and it ought to bring us

  310. to repentance.

  311. And if we say

  312. we are going to obey

  313. this commandment,

  314. it will be with

  315. a repentant obedience.

  316. And if you have not learnt it yet,

  317. the Christian life

  318. is one of ongoing

  319. lifelong

  320. continual

  321. joyful

  322. repentance.

  323. And I use those words carefully.

  324. The Christian life

  325. is one of ongoing

  326. lifelong

  327. continual

  328. joyful

  329. repentance

  330. of bringing your sin

  331. to a God

  332. who knows about it already

  333. and who has dealt with it

  334. in the person

  335. of his Son

  336. and offers you

  337. free and full

  338. forgiveness.

  339. It will also secondly

  340. be a rigorous

  341. obedience.

  342. Can you see that

  343. in verse 29 to 30?

  344. Verse 29

  345. If your right eye

  346. causes you to sin

  347. tear it out

  348. and throw it away

  349. for it's better

  350. that you lose

  351. one of your members

  352. than let your whole body

  353. be thrown into hell.

  354. If your right eye

  355. causes you to sin

  356. cut it off

  357. and throw it away

  358. for it is better

  359. that you lose

  360. one of your members

  361. than let your whole body

  362. go into hell.

  363. What Jesus is saying there

  364. is that

  365. here is a way

  366. for you to begin

  367. to obey

  368. and deal with

  369. the seventh commandment

  370. from the very roots

  371. to deal not just

  372. with external conformity

  373. but seeking to obey

  374. it from your heart

  375. and here's the pattern

  376. there's something

  377. you can do

  378. in order to begin

  379. to get into

  380. obedience on this

  381. now what does he mean?

  382. He says

  383. if your right eye

  384. and again

  385. you need to

  386. connect

  387. verse 28

  388. with verse

  389. verse 29

  390. and so he's just

  391. spoken about

  392. looking at a woman

  393. lustfully

  394. in order to lust

  395. after her

  396. I knew that a page

  397. of my notes

  398. blew away this morning

  399. but I couldn't

  400. work out which one

  401. so

  402. page 8

  403. to page 10

  404. let me just see

  405. no

  406. it definitely

  407. blew away

  408. and so

  409. what we need to do

  410. is we need to see

  411. the connection

  412. don't we

  413. but what does

  414. Jesus mean?

  415. does he mean this

  416. literally?

  417. does he mean it

  418. literally?

  419. of course he can't

  420. mean it

  421. literally

  422. the problem is

  423. we're so familiar

  424. with it aren't we

  425. we think that

  426. just because he can't

  427. mean it literally

  428. that it's

  429. just one of those

  430. things Jesus

  431. says

  432. it's

  433. hyperbole

  434. but it's not

  435. that

  436. it is

  437. a figurative

  438. expression

  439. and just because

  440. it doesn't mean

  441. literally

  442. that you have to

  443. self-harm your

  444. eye

  445. or cut off

  446. your arm

  447. and the reason

  448. why we know

  449. it can't mean

  450. that

  451. isn't it

  452. the reason

  453. why we know

  454. it can't mean

  455. it literally

  456. because if you

  457. pluck out

  458. your

  459. right eye

  460. you're still

  461. back with your

  462. left eye

  463. aren't you?

  464. and so that's

  465. the reason why

  466. it can't be

  467. literal

  468. and actually

  469. if you pluck out

  470. both eyes

  471. the way lust

  472. works is that

  473. you'd still lust

  474. anyway wouldn't

  475. you?

  476. and if you

  477. chop off your

  478. right arm

  479. you're still

  480. left with your

  481. left arm

  482. because the

  483. issue of lust

  484. is an issue

  485. of the heart

  486. alright

  487. and that was

  488. page nine

  489. now what does

  490. the figurative

  491. language mean?

  492. Jesus

  493. saying this

  494. really clearly

  495. he's saying

  496. you should be

  497. willing to go

  498. to nearly

  499. any extreme

  500. and he's

  501. saying you

  502. and I need

  503. to be willing

  504. to take

  505. drastic measures

  506. and you need

  507. to be willing

  508. to take any

  509. sacrifice

  510. make any

  511. sacrifice

  512. and you should

  513. be willing

  514. to endure

  515. severe hardship

  516. in order to

  517. avoid

  518. illicit sexual

  519. lust

  520. or any

  521. sin

  522. and that

  523. leaves me

  524. with a real

  525. big problem

  526. and it

  527. humbles me

  528. again

  529. because

  530. do you know

  531. what

  532. I don't

  533. really share

  534. that view

  535. of sin

  536. do I

  537. and I

  538. suspect

  539. neither do

  540. you

  541. to have

  542. such an

  543. animosity

  544. to have

  545. such a

  546. hatred

  547. towards sin

  548. and particularly

  549. towards illicit

  550. sexual lust

  551. that Jesus

  552. is speaking

  553. about here

  554. he's so

  555. opposed to it

  556. and he's

  557. saying his

  558. followers should

  559. be so opposed

  560. to it that

  561. they're willing

  562. to go to

  563. almost any

  564. extreme

  565. to avoid

  566. it

  567. and Jesus

  568. has a view

  569. of sin

  570. that's far

  571. more extreme

  572. and accurate

  573. and right

  574. and I

  575. don't begin

  576. to measure

  577. up to that

  578. and sometimes

  579. I come

  580. every Sunday

  581. and I confess

  582. and I say

  583. it is terrible

  584. but that

  585. isn't always

  586. my practice

  587. in any

  588. given area

  589. and our

  590. view is more

  591. flippant

  592. than Jesus

  593. view and so

  594. it humbles

  595. us

  596. and what it

  597. does tell you

  598. is it tells

  599. you that the

  600. Christian life

  601. Christian

  602. discipleship

  603. is one of

  604. ongoing

  605. struggle

  606. it is a

  607. war

  608. and it is

  609. a fight

  610. not just

  611. with this

  612. particular sin

  613. but with any

  614. sin

  615. that's what

  616. he's telling

  617. you

  618. and we

  619. need to

  620. take hold

  621. of that

  622. because there

  623. is a view

  624. of the

  625. Christian life

  626. that's preached

  627. in lots of

  628. churches in

  629. London today

  630. that's basically

  631. this

  632. it's let

  633. go

  634. and let

  635. God

  636. do it

  637. Dr. Martyn

  638. O'Jones

  639. says there's

  640. a view

  641. which goes

  642. like this

  643. that when

  644. you get

  645. a particular

  646. kind of

  647. experience

  648. then you

  649. can kind

  650. of live

  651. off the

  652. fumes

  653. of that

  654. and your

  655. Christian life

  656. will go

  657. to a higher

  658. plane

  659. and you

  660. don't have

  661. to struggle

  662. with sin

  663. anymore

  664. I don't

  665. know a

  666. Christian life

  667. like that

  668. John White

  669. was right

  670. when he

  671. entitled his

  672. book on

  673. the Christian

  674. life

  675. and it

  676. is a

  677. brilliant

  678. brilliant

  679. book

  680. the fight

  681. he called

  682. it

  683. the fight

  684. and what

  685. you have

  686. here

  687. is Jesus

  688. saying are

  689. you willing

  690. to go to

  691. any extreme

  692. are you willing

  693. to take any

  694. measure

  695. no matter

  696. however

  697. drastic

  698. in order

  699. to avoid

  700. sin

  701. and that

  702. is a

  703. passion

  704. with you

  705. he's not

  706. saying don't

  707. be passionate

  708. Jesus

  709. saying be

  710. passionate

  711. be passionate

  712. in your war

  713. against the

  714. wrong type

  715. of lust

  716. what kind

  717. of motivation

  718. does Jesus

  719. use here

  720. how does

  721. Jesus try to

  722. stimulate you

  723. to obedience

  724. and evaluate

  725. the situation

  726. well he says

  727. this he says

  728. get your eye

  729. and scoop

  730. it out

  731. and throw

  732. it from you

  733. and take

  734. any measure

  735. you can

  736. that you

  737. must

  738. in order to

  739. avoid sin

  740. or any

  741. sin

  742. and the

  743. motivation

  744. he uses

  745. is this

  746. it's better

  747. for you to

  748. lose one of

  749. your members

  750. either an eye

  751. or an arm

  752. or a leg

  753. than that your

  754. whole body

  755. is thrown

  756. into hell

  757. then he repeats

  758. it in verse 29

  759. for it's better

  760. for you to lose

  761. one of your

  762. members

  763. than for your

  764. whole body

  765. to go into

  766. hell

  767. so what's the

  768. motivation

  769. motivation is

  770. fear

  771. and we might

  772. be really

  773. disturbed

  774. by Jesus

  775. like this

  776. you might say

  777. you should

  778. never motivate

  779. anybody like

  780. that

  781. that is

  782. negative

  783. we don't

  784. like that

  785. we particularly

  786. don't like that

  787. in our culture

  788. our church

  789. culture

  790. but I do

  791. want you to

  792. see that

  793. it is

  794. Jesus

  795. the gracious

  796. son of

  797. God

  798. who talks

  799. about

  800. hell

  801. and one

  802. of the

  803. reasons it

  804. doesn't disturb

  805. us very much

  806. is because

  807. hell is just

  808. a four letter

  809. word for most

  810. people isn't it

  811. there's no

  812. reality to it

  813. and it's

  814. basically empty

  815. we use it

  816. all the time

  817. but do

  818. notice it is

  819. Jesus who

  820. talks about

  821. hell

  822. C.S. Lewis

  823. and Walter

  824. Hooper

  825. are sitting

  826. in Lewis'

  827. study

  828. reading one

  829. particular day

  830. it's a sunny

  831. day

  832. and Walter

  833. Cooper makes

  834. the comment

  835. a little bit

  836. too loud

  837. Lou it's

  838. as hot as

  839. hell in

  840. here

  841. and Lewis

  842. says how

  843. do you

  844. know

  845. and Jesus

  846. is really

  847. serious about

  848. this isn't

  849. he what is

  850. he saying

  851. he's saying

  852. on any

  853. given sin

  854. but particularly

  855. in this

  856. case

  857. illicit

  858. sexual

  859. lust

  860. he is

  861. saying

  862. any

  863. given

  864. sin

  865. that's

  866. unattended

  867. unchecked

  868. unatoned

  869. for

  870. that is

  871. nursed

  872. that is

  873. kept

  874. that is

  875. cuddled

  876. will

  877. place you

  878. in hell

  879. and he

  880. says it's

  881. better that

  882. you take

  883. any measure

  884. any measure

  885. that you

  886. must take

  887. to avoid

  888. sin

  889. any measure

  890. that you

  891. can to

  892. the utmost

  893. of your

  894. ability

  895. than to

  896. end up

  897. in hell

  898. with your

  899. sin

  900. John 5

  901. there's a guy

  902. that's been

  903. paralysed for

  904. 38 years

  905. and Jesus

  906. raises him up

  907. and he sees

  908. him later on

  909. in the temple

  910. and he says

  911. don't go

  912. on sinning

  913. lest

  914. something

  915. worse

  916. happen to

  917. you

  918. and I

  919. don't know

  920. exactly what

  921. Jesus was

  922. saying but

  923. did you hear

  924. what Jesus

  925. said he

  926. said there

  927. is something

  928. worse than

  929. 38 years

  930. of utter

  931. paralysis

  932. it's an

  933. amazing

  934. statement

  935. and so we

  936. need to

  937. stick seriously

  938. his word

  939. when he

  940. says sin

  941. unattended

  942. sin

  943. indulged

  944. sin

  945. left

  946. alone

  947. sin

  948. nursed

  949. will place

  950. you in

  951. hell

  952. we might

  953. say that

  954. he's

  955. motivating

  956. us by

  957. fear

  958. but there's

  959. nothing wrong

  960. with that

  961. as long as

  962. it's a true

  963. fear

  964. you don't

  965. motivate people

  966. by untrue

  967. things

  968. do you

  969. but if it

  970. is someone

  971. and something

  972. that is true

  973. then it's

  974. perfectly right

  975. what would

  976. we do

  977. if someone

  978. ran in here

  979. this morning

  980. and they

  981. screamed fire

  982. fire

  983. would we

  984. say oh

  985. will you

  986. stop being

  987. so negative

  988. come on

  989. you can't

  990. motivate us

  991. like that

  992. we ought to

  993. be motivated

  994. by grace

  995. well that

  996. warning is

  997. proper to

  998. take isn't

  999. it

  1000. a legitimate

  1001. motivation

  1002. and what

  1003. Jesus' word

  1004. requires is

  1005. vigorous obedience

  1006. if we're

  1007. willing to do

  1008. practically anything

  1009. in order to

  1010. obey his

  1011. commandments

  1012. in order to

  1013. harness this

  1014. matter of

  1015. illicit lust

  1016. and so on

  1017. what does it

  1018. require

  1019. well it means

  1020. that we'll take

  1021. measures won't it

  1022. so that our

  1023. lust isn't fed

  1024. we'll avoid

  1025. situations that

  1026. stimulate lust

  1027. but again

  1028. you've got to

  1029. realise the

  1030. problem is

  1031. the heart

  1032. you've got a

  1033. betrayer within

  1034. you

  1035. the problem

  1036. is with

  1037. your sinful

  1038. nature

  1039. that remains

  1040. it's true

  1041. we deal with

  1042. all the

  1043. outside stimuli

  1044. that we

  1045. can

  1046. we get

  1047. internet

  1048. accountability

  1049. we meet

  1050. with people

  1051. and confess

  1052. our sins

  1053. we get

  1054. people to

  1055. ask us

  1056. the hard

  1057. questions

  1058. but we've

  1059. got to realise

  1060. the problem

  1061. with that

  1062. is the

  1063. problem

  1064. with the

  1065. heart

  1066. isn't it

  1067. the primary

  1068. problem

  1069. the primary

  1070. issue is

  1071. evil

  1072. nature

  1073. within

  1074. so there's

  1075. kind of

  1076. craze

  1077. we must

  1078. have really

  1079. close

  1080. accountability

  1081. groups

  1082. but we

  1083. all know

  1084. really

  1085. accountability

  1086. groups don't

  1087. work

  1088. why don't

  1089. accountability

  1090. groups work

  1091. because if

  1092. you're going to

  1093. sleep with

  1094. your brother's

  1095. wife

  1096. you're going

  1097. to lie

  1098. to your

  1099. brother

  1100. about it

  1101. aren't you

  1102. you'll keep

  1103. yourself

  1104. from that

  1105. because the

  1106. problem is

  1107. it's my

  1108. heart

  1109. we

  1110. automatically

  1111. think

  1112. don't

  1113. we

  1114. I've

  1115. talked

  1116. about it

  1117. a number

  1118. of times

  1119. internet

  1120. pornography

  1121. but there's

  1122. something much

  1123. deeper going

  1124. on here

  1125. and we need

  1126. to be aware

  1127. don't we

  1128. of the

  1129. culture that

  1130. we live

  1131. in

  1132. and our

  1133. culture's

  1134. approach to

  1135. relationships

  1136. and what

  1137. is normal

  1138. and what

  1139. is allowable

  1140. behaviour

  1141. and to recognise

  1142. that according

  1143. to the bible

  1144. the only

  1145. place for

  1146. sexual

  1147. relations

  1148. is within

  1149. the context

  1150. of a marriage

  1151. relationship

  1152. lifelong

  1153. between your

  1154. husband and

  1155. the wife

  1156. and I know

  1157. that you

  1158. can't fly out

  1159. of the world

  1160. I know you've

  1161. got to go to

  1162. work tomorrow

  1163. and you've

  1164. got to go to

  1165. school and

  1166. you can't

  1167. escape this

  1168. but actually

  1169. we have to

  1170. change our

  1171. thinking and

  1172. our minds

  1173. and we need

  1174. to see

  1175. sexual behaviour

  1176. outside of

  1177. marriage for

  1178. what it is

  1179. which is

  1180. pathetic

  1181. and I don't

  1182. say that

  1183. lightly

  1184. we need to

  1185. deal with

  1186. the visual

  1187. is it

  1188. and the

  1189. mind

  1190. there's

  1191. going to

  1192. be different

  1193. issues

  1194. to different

  1195. folks

  1196. there'll

  1197. be different

  1198. temptations

  1199. but it's

  1200. the same

  1201. answer for

  1202. each one

  1203. it really

  1204. is

  1205. it's

  1206. simple

  1207. it's not

  1208. easy

  1209. it's pluck

  1210. out your

  1211. right eye

  1212. and cut

  1213. off your

  1214. right hand

  1215. that may

  1216. mean you

  1217. get out

  1218. of your

  1219. smartphone

  1220. so I'd

  1221. be seen

  1222. as a total

  1223. dinosaur

  1224. people will

  1225. laugh at me

  1226. well

  1227. total

  1228. dinosaurs

  1229. and people

  1230. who are

  1231. laughed at

  1232. will be in

  1233. the kingdom

  1234. of heaven

  1235. the stakes

  1236. are too

  1237. high

  1238. maybe that

  1239. you just

  1240. don't get

  1241. into that

  1242. I'm not

  1243. a raving

  1244. radical

  1245. I just

  1246. think if

  1247. we take

  1248. Jesus'

  1249. words in

  1250. verse 29

  1251. and 30

  1252. seriously

  1253. then whatever

  1254. makes you

  1255. susceptible

  1256. in this

  1257. area of

  1258. sin

  1259. in so far

  1260. as it

  1261. depends on

  1262. you

  1263. you'll

  1264. want to

  1265. get rid

  1266. of it

  1267. and you'll

  1268. not expose

  1269. yourself

  1270. to it

  1271. and that

  1272. is going to

  1273. look differently

  1274. in different

  1275. people

  1276. isn't it

  1277. there's no

  1278. one

  1279. straight rule

  1280. I wish there

  1281. was

  1282. but there

  1283. isn't

  1284. but the

  1285. principle is

  1286. caring about

  1287. following

  1288. the Lord

  1289. and so

  1290. what does

  1291. Jesus require

  1292. of us

  1293. in the

  1294. seventh

  1295. commandment

  1296. Charlie Brown

  1297. and Lucy

  1298. Charlie Brown

  1299. cartoon character

  1300. says

  1301. beauty is

  1302. only skin

  1303. deep

  1304. Lucy

  1305. says

  1306. I deny

  1307. that

  1308. beauty

  1309. goes down

  1310. layer

  1311. after layer

  1312. after layer

  1313. and she

  1314. looked in her

  1315. mirror again

  1316. and said

  1317. I have

  1318. very thick

  1319. beauty

  1320. what's

  1321. Jesus

  1322. want

  1323. of his

  1324. disciples

  1325. in obedience

  1326. to the

  1327. seventh

  1328. commandment

  1329. he wants

  1330. very thick

  1331. obedience

  1332. obedience

  1333. that goes

  1334. down

  1335. into the

  1336. depths

  1337. of our

  1338. hearts

  1339. and our

  1340. imaginations

  1341. and also

  1342. that reaches

  1343. up to the

  1344. heights of

  1345. being willing

  1346. even to

  1347. sacrifice

  1348. sacrifice

  1349. some good

  1350. things

  1351. good things

  1352. which are

  1353. not wrong

  1354. but if in

  1355. our case

  1356. they lead

  1357. us to sin

  1358. we'll want

  1359. rid of them

  1360. and so he

  1361. wants a very

  1362. thick obedience

  1363. don't think

  1364. don't think

  1365. people of

  1366. God

  1367. don't think

  1368. that Jesus

  1369. wants to

  1370. squash your

  1371. lust

  1372. he doesn't

  1373. Jesus

  1374. wants you

  1375. to lust

  1376. he wants

  1377. to stir

  1378. up your

  1379. lust

  1380. he wants

  1381. to inflame

  1382. your lust

  1383. he wants

  1384. you to

  1385. lust

  1386. after purity

  1387. and so

  1388. it's so

  1389. helpful

  1390. isn't it

  1391. that we

  1392. come to

  1393. the table

  1394. we come

  1395. to the table

  1396. of the Lord

  1397. for sinners

  1398. for people

  1399. that struggle

  1400. with their

  1401. sin

  1402. that struggle

  1403. to know

  1404. that they

  1405. are cleansed

  1406. from their

  1407. past sin

  1408. and yet we

  1409. know the

  1410. blood of

  1411. Jesus

  1412. his son

  1413. cleanses us

  1414. from all

  1415. sin

  1416. as we

  1417. heard earlier

  1418. this morning

  1419. and we

  1420. ask that

  1421. as we

  1422. eat of

  1423. the bread

  1424. and drink

  1425. of the

  1426. wine

  1427. that he

  1428. would stir

  1429. us up

  1430. he would

  1431. strengthen

  1432. our desires

  1433. for purity

  1434. let's

  1435. pray

  1436. those

  1437. those

  1438. those

  1439. !
