  1. Mark chapter 11 verses 1 to 11. It's very, very familiar, isn't it? The famous ride of Jesus into Jerusalem on a donkey. Two things I want to say right from the off. Two things immediately. Number one, I want to say this is a lonely ride. It's a lonely ride. And I think that's often overlooked.

    Mark 11:1–11

  2. But I want to show you that although Jesus had a great crowd around him, great crowds thronging him, nobody was really with him. He was really on his own.

  3. I wonder if you know that. Sometimes when I talk to people who are going through a really difficult circumstance, and I know that I myself, I can't identify with them.

  4. What I find myself thinking and saying to them is, there is no one who will understand what you're going through except the Lord Jesus Christ. And not only will he understand, but he is able to help you.

  5. And the second thing I notice as I've read these verses about this walk into Jerusalem on that Palm Sunday is everything's upside down. Everything you think is impressive is actually not impressive.

  6. All the things that you think are not impressive are actually very impressive.

  7. I read this week that two art students last year went to a modern art show in Aberdeen.

  8. And they took with them a pineapple, and they left the pineapple on an empty stand at the art show.

  9. They were delighted to find that a couple of days later, when they went back to the show, that the pineapple had been given its own glass case, and had been made part of the art show.

  10. That's the world we live in, isn't it? That's the world you live in.

  11. Things that are completely stupid become serious, and some things that are serious become stupid.

  12. And so look at Mark 11, and let's look at it under two headings.

  13. First, a lonely ride and a loving word. First of all, a lonely ride.

  14. Chapter 11, verse 1.

  15. And we're on the road to Jerusalem. That's where he's going.

  16. And Jerusalem is the point where Jesus wants to get to. That's the aim of his mission.

  17. He came into this world to save sinners.

  18. And to die on the cross.

  19. He goes to the city, because that is where he'll be crucified.

  20. Look at just chapter 10, and verse 33, just the chapter before.

  21. He says to his disciples,

  22. See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man, that's the way he refers to himself,

  23. will be delivered over the chief priests and the scribes,

  24. and they will condemn him to death, and deliver him over to the Gentiles.

  25. They'll mock him, spit on him, and flog him, and kill him.

  26. After three days he will rise.

  27. And even though the way that Jesus rides into Jerusalem,

  28. with this great crowd around him, singing and shouting,

  29. he is riding to his death.

  30. And it should have registered, shouldn't it, to the disciples?

  31. But it doesn't register at all.

  32. They might have said, he's about to ride in on a donkey.

  33. And it says in the first book of the Bible, in Genesis,

  34. that someone of the tribe of Judah,

  35. and Jesus is from the tribe of Judah,

  36. and they would eventually link donkey and death together,

  37. from that passage, but they don't get it.

  38. They might have gone to maybe the last,

  39. nearly the last book of the Old Testament, Zechariah,

  40. where he says this,

  41. Rejoice, your king comes to you,

  42. humble riding on a donkey.

  43. But they've obviously not been reading their Old Testament.

  44. And they don't remember,

  45. and they don't register,

  46. and they don't get what Jesus is doing.

  47. And even though we need the word of God

  48. to understand the events that took place,

  49. no one obviously remembers the word of God in this context.

  50. In the previous story,

  51. that brilliant story about Bartimaeus in Mark 10,

  52. blind Bartimaeus,

  53. this blind beggar puts one and one together,

  54. and he makes two.

  55. He's been begging,

  56. and suddenly he hears that a king is coming.

  57. A king who is the son of David.

  58. And he recognises that Jesus is acting like the son of David.

  59. He is the son of David.

  60. He puts one and one together,

  61. and he makes two,

  62. and he calls out,

  63. and he cries and relies upon Jesus,

  64. and is healed.

  65. But nobody here puts one and one together.

  66. Now as we think about this Palm Sunday passage,

  67. you and I,

  68. many of us have been to church nearly all our lives,

  69. and we've got Palm Sunday services,

  70. flashbacks,

  71. and memories.

  72. Do you remember when you were in Sunday school,

  73. and you made palm branches,

  74. and you waved palm branches?

  75. I remember that as a boy.

  76. It was a day,

  77. wasn't it,

  78. of celebration in church life,

  79. where everybody got very excited about Jesus.

  80. There seemed to be lots of faith in Jesus.

  81. Lots of recognising him as king.

  82. And really strangely,

  83. a week later,

  84. the crowd all turned against him,

  85. and started a call for his crucifixion.

  86. That's the way I remember it.

  87. Maybe it wasn't exactly like that.

  88. Be like the crowd on Palm Sunday.

  89. I want to say to you,

  90. as I've read it this week,

  91. I want to say to you that

  92. what is going on at the start of Mark 11

  93. is not faith at all.

  94. There's no faith in it.

  95. And actually the message this morning

  96. is don't be like the crowd.

  97. And I think I can prove that to you.

  98. I think I can prove to you

  99. because all four Gospels record

  100. the coming of Jesus into Jerusalem

  101. on a donkey.

  102. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,

  103. all talk about it.

  104. So it's a big event.

  105. This is what Matthew says

  106. in Matthew 21.

  107. He finishes with this verdict

  108. from the crowd.

  109. They say Jesus is a prophet.

  110. And I'm absolutely sure

  111. that they've completely missed the point.

  112. They don't say

  113. he is the king.

  114. They don't say he is the Messiah.

  115. They say he's just a prophet.

  116. Luke in his Gospel in chapter 19

  117. finishes with this verdict.

  118. Jesus wept.

  119. He wept and he said to the people,

  120. if only you had known

  121. what makes for peace.

  122. Yet you did not recognise

  123. God's coming to you.

  124. John's Gospel,

  125. chapter 12,

  126. the final sentence there,

  127. the disciples did not

  128. understand what Jesus was doing.

  129. And in Mark's Gospel,

  130. you might have noticed

  131. that he records a number of things

  132. that they said,

  133. that none of the things

  134. that the crowd says

  135. really connect to Jesus.

  136. So I want to ask you

  137. to look with me

  138. at why this is such a lonely ride.

  139. And it's important to think

  140. that it is a lonely ride.

  141. Because Jesus is doing a mission

  142. on his own

  143. that no one else can do.

  144. As we look at verses 9 and 10,

  145. I think it may be

  146. that some of you think,

  147. oh it was so clever

  148. of our minister

  149. to show us these things

  150. that we'd never seen.

  151. And without him,

  152. where would we be

  153. without our great guide

  154. and guru minister?

  155. I want you to know,

  156. perhaps none of you

  157. will say that.

  158. There's always hope there, isn't there?

  159. But I want to say to you,

  160. I am not saying anything

  161. this morning.

  162. I think you couldn't have

  163. figured out for yourself

  164. by carefully reading the text

  165. and looking at

  166. the Old Testament references.

  167. The problem is,

  168. when we come to a familiar story

  169. with this,

  170. we don't carefully read the text.

  171. It's all that.

  172. So first of all,

  173. chapter 11, verse 9.

  174. Hosanna.

  175. Hosanna.

  176. Blessed is he who comes

  177. in the name of the Lord.

  178. Blessed is the coming kingdom

  179. of our father David.

  180. Hosanna in the highest.

  181. What does the word Hosanna mean?

  182. It means save.

  183. Save.

  184. It's the sort of thing

  185. that actually,

  186. the people often cried out

  187. when they gathered together

  188. or marched into Jerusalem.

  189. It's a very general word

  190. calling on God

  191. to save us.

  192. Save us.

  193. Save us from what?

  194. It doesn't say

  195. save us from our sins.

  196. It could be just

  197. save us from our oppressors.

  198. It is general.

  199. Oh God,

  200. save us

  201. from our problems.

  202. There's nothing specific

  203. being said about Jesus

  204. in verse 9.

  205. Hosanna.

  206. Blessed is he who comes

  207. in the name of the Lord.

  208. And we think,

  209. don't we,

  210. ah,

  211. that's obviously

  212. talking about Jesus.

  213. They're recognising

  214. he is the son of David.

  215. But if you go back

  216. to the Psalms,

  217. Psalm 118 verse 26,

    Psalms 118:26

  218. it's not talking about Jesus.

  219. It's talking about the pilgrim.

  220. It's talking about

  221. the people of God

  222. who go to Jerusalem.

  223. Blessed is the person

  224. who goes to Jerusalem.

  225. Blessed is the person

  226. who goes to Jerusalem

  227. and ends up in the temple.

  228. It's not specifically

  229. about Jesus at all.

  230. And then verse 10.

  231. Blessed is the coming kingdom.

  232. Well again,

  233. that's just standard language.

  234. Looking forward

  235. to better days

  236. without the Romans,

  237. without the oppressors.

  238. There's no direct link

  239. to Jesus at all.

  240. And the final sentence

  241. in chapter 11 verse 10.

  242. Hosanna in the highest.

  243. Save us.

  244. Save us.

  245. It's vague.

  246. It's general.

  247. It's not related

  248. specifically to Jesus.

  249. It's pretty empty.

  250. And so you need to see

  251. that each of the Gospels

  252. in its own way

  253. is telling us

  254. that Jesus

  255. is on a very,

  256. very lonely ride.

  257. This Palm Sunday,

  258. the crowds

  259. don't understand him.

  260. Not even the disciples

  261. understood him.

  262. They're just having

  263. a standard Passover celebration.

  264. There's no grasp

  265. that Jesus

  266. is the king

  267. at all.

  268. Shocking.

  269. But do you think

  270. it's possible

  271. people could be

  272. so in the dark?

  273. Do you think

  274. it would be possible

  275. for people

  276. to be in a crowd

  277. saying

  278. orthodox things

  279. and singing

  280. things that are

  281. orthodox

  282. but completely

  283. missing

  284. the point

  285. of Jesus

  286. and the person

  287. of Jesus?

  288. Do you think

  289. it might be possible

  290. for that to happen?

  291. Sadly it is.

  292. Think about the

  293. funerals

  294. that take place.

  295. This funeral in the church

  296. can be a very,

  297. very sad funeral

  298. and everybody

  299. in the building

  300. is faced

  301. with the sad

  302. departure

  303. and this great

  304. sadness

  305. and suddenly

  306. a hymn is sung

  307. and they sing

  308. and the song

  309. and the Bible

  310. reading explains

  311. that Jesus

  312. lived and died

  313. and rose

  314. and somebody

  315. will speak

  316. and preach

  317. that Jesus

  318. lived and died

  319. and rose

  320. and somebody

  321. will read the Bible

  322. again

  323. that Jesus

  324. lived and died

  325. and rose

  326. and then you go

  327. to the wake

  328. afterwards

  329. and you discover

  330. that everyone

  331. is standing around

  332. and basically

  333. saying

  334. it's all in the past

  335. there's no future

  336. all but hope

  337. is there

  338. we each drink

  339. and be merry

  340. for tomorrow

  341. we die

  342. but they've got

  343. no idea

  344. who Jesus is

  345. even though

  346. they've been

  347. singing and saying

  348. and listening

  349. nothing has gone in

  350. I heard recently

  351. of a nurse

  352. who went to a funeral

  353. of a hundred year old woman

  354. and the words

  355. of John 14

  356. 6 were read

  357. I am the way

  358. the truth

  359. and the life

  360. no one comes

  361. to the Father

  362. but through me

  363. and as the woman

  364. heard that

  365. she said

  366. that is Jesus

  367. she put her faith

  368. in him

  369. and she walked

  370. out of that funeral

  371. believing in the Lord

  372. Jesus Christ

  373. but I tell you

  374. about that

  375. because it is

  376. so so rare

  377. in fact

  378. I can't

  379. think of another

  380. funeral

  381. where I

  382. have heard

  383. of that

  384. happening

  385. think about

  386. Christmas

  387. people pile

  388. into Christmas

  389. services

  390. don't they

  391. still

  392. and they

  393. hear amazing

  394. readings

  395. they hear

  396. that he's

  397. the King

  398. of Kings

  399. that he's

  400. the Messiah

  401. he's the

  402. Saviour

  403. that he is

  404. the one

  405. who gives

  406. second birth

  407. and we discover

  408. who he is

  409. and what he's

  410. come to do

  411. and we sing

  412. about him

  413. and we listen

  414. to him

  415. but nothing

  416. goes in

  417. think about

  418. a normal

  419. church service

  420. where people

  421. sing hymns

  422. they hear

  423. the reading

  424. and they say

  425. the creed

  426. and they hear

  427. preaching

  428. nothing

  429. goes

  430. in

  431. it's possible

  432. it's possible

  433. to be like

  434. the crowds

  435. on Palm Sunday

  436. to be listening

  437. and singing

  438. and not getting

  439. it

  440. and if we

  441. look very

  442. carefully

  443. at Palm Sunday

  444. I think we

  445. are meant

  446. to see

  447. that Jesus

  448. is alone

  449. he is alone

  450. and we're not

  451. meant to despair

  452. of that point

  453. because

  454. because he

  455. is alone

  456. he alone

  457. is the answer

  458. to our problem

  459. he is the answer

  460. to unbelief

  461. and he is the answer

  462. to our sin

  463. and to our lostness

  464. and by the time

  465. he gets to Jerusalem

  466. and to the cross

  467. and he does his work

  468. the curtain of the

  469. temple is torn

  470. in two

  471. and people

  472. start to pour in

  473. one more clue

  474. in Mark 11

  475. that this crowd

  476. is not appreciating

  477. who Jesus is

  478. here in verse 11

  479. when he actually

  480. gets to the temple

  481. that's the meeting

  482. place where people

  483. meet with God

  484. Mark doesn't tell us

  485. anything does he

  486. there's no red

  487. carpet laid out

  488. for him

  489. there's no people

  490. looking for him

  491. no one is

  492. talking to him

  493. he walks in

  494. he looks around

  495. and in Mark's

  496. gospel

  497. that little phrase

  498. looks around

  499. is always

  500. ominous

  501. it is always

  502. ominous

  503. whenever he looks

  504. around

  505. he is looking

  506. for life

  507. he is looking

  508. for faith

  509. you see it

  510. with the victory

  511. in the next passage

  512. and then how

  513. many does he

  514. have when he

  515. leaves with

  516. 12

  517. doesn't he

  518. verse 11

  519. no big crowds

  520. it is perhaps

  521. isn't it

  522. the loneliest

  523. ride in the

  524. universe

  525. and I want to

  526. say this to you

  527. because loneliness

  528. is such a big

  529. issue

  530. I don't mean

  531. being alone

  532. I absolutely

  533. love sometimes

  534. to be alone

  535. but to be lonely

  536. is a very

  537. different thing

  538. isn't it

  539. to be lonely

  540. is where you

  541. feel nobody

  542. is really

  543. connecting with

  544. you or caring

  545. for you

  546. and there's no

  547. guarantee for you

  548. that if things

  549. get worse

  550. that there's

  551. going to be

  552. somebody there

  553. for you

  554. it's a terrible

  555. terrible feeling

  556. and especially

  557. if you've lost

  558. a loved one

  559. and you just

  560. have a slight

  561. panic that you

  562. might be left

  563. alone and adrift

  564. loneliness is a

  565. very big thing

  566. and in a city

  567. like ours

  568. loneliness is an

  569. enormous problem

  570. and there's a lot

  571. of loneliness

  572. out there

  573. and in here

  574. it's not surprising

  575. is it

  576. in a world

  577. where people are

  578. told there is

  579. no loving father

  580. there's no loving

  581. father that exists

  582. whatsoever

  583. it's just you

  584. in an empty

  585. universe

  586. no wonder

  587. there's a great

  588. deal of despair

  589. but God has

  590. two answers

  591. to loneliness

  592. and one

  593. is his son

  594. one is his son

  595. who is able

  596. to bring you

  597. immediately

  598. to a heavenly

  599. father

  600. so that you

  601. return to him

  602. and he runs

  603. down the road

  604. to meet you

  605. and to embrace

  606. you

  607. and the other

  608. partial answer

  609. to loneliness

  610. is God's

  611. family

  612. the church

  613. and although

  614. God's family

  615. is made up

  616. of very

  617. sinful people

  618. like me

  619. and like you

  620. and very

  621. imperfect people

  622. it is one of

  623. the ways

  624. in which God

  625. builds

  626. the bridges

  627. of relationships

  628. in this world

  629. as we begin

  630. to show

  631. kindness

  632. and care

  633. for one another

  634. and we never

  635. do it perfectly

  636. but we do it

  637. profitably

  638. that's the

  639. lonely ride

  640. secondly

  641. the loving

  642. word

  643. first few

  644. verses

  645. I don't know

  646. about Mark 11

  647. but you find

  648. yourself scratching

  649. your head

  650. don't you

  651. at them

  652. and say

  653. what is this

  654. here for

  655. why are you

  656. being told

  657. about this

  658. about a donkey

  659. that's tied up

  660. and you're going

  661. to untie it

  662. and somebody's

  663. going to ask

  664. you why are you

  665. untying it

  666. and if they do

  667. ask you

  668. you will say

  669. I'm untying it

  670. because of this

  671. what is that

  672. all about

  673. why has

  674. Mark put this

  675. in the gospel

  676. I don't get it

  677. but here's the

  678. answer I take

  679. Jesus is giving

  680. his disciples

  681. isn't he

  682. in these really

  683. detailed instructions

  684. and then

  685. relaying the

  686. detailed instructions

  687. when they actually

  688. have them

  689. what is Jesus

  690. doing

  691. he is

  692. giving his

  693. disciples

  694. you and I

  695. a reminder

  696. that he can

  697. be trusted

  698. and that his

  699. words can be

  700. trusted

  701. and the reason

  702. I say this

  703. is if you look

  704. at what he says

  705. he says to his

  706. two disciples

  707. in verse 2

  708. remember they've

  709. forgotten the

  710. Old Testament

  711. haven't they

  712. they don't know

  713. what they should

  714. know

  715. they don't know

  716. what's happening

  717. they're not

  718. thinking but he

  719. wants to help

  720. them

  721. so he says

  722. in verse 2

  723. go into the

  724. village in front

  725. of you and

  726. immediately as you

  727. enter it you

  728. will find a

  729. coat a donkey

  730. tied on which

  731. no one has

  732. ever sat

  733. untie it

  734. and bring it

  735. and if anyone

  736. says to you

  737. why are you

  738. doing this

  739. say the

  740. Lord is

  741. in need of

  742. it and

  743. we'll send

  744. it back

  745. here

  746. immediately

  747. they went

  748. away and

  749. found a

  750. coat tied

  751. at a

  752. door outside

  753. in the

  754. street and

  755. they untied

  756. it

  757. some of

  758. those standing

  759. there said

  760. to them

  761. what are you

  762. doing

  763. untying the

  764. coat and

  765. they told

  766. them what

  767. Jesus had

  768. said and

  769. they let

  770. them go

  771. the implication

  772. is this

  773. isn't it

  774. Jesus knows

  775. what's in

  776. the future

  777. he knows

  778. what is in

  779. front and

  780. around the

  781. corner

  782. and this

  783. is a

  784. prediction

  785. about the

  786. future that

  787. is going to

  788. be proved

  789. to be true

  790. and it's

  791. going to

  792. prove to be

  793. true in a

  794. matter of

  795. minutes

  796. most of the

  797. promises in the

  798. bible you've

  799. got to wait a

  800. long time for

  801. haven't you

  802. hundreds of

  803. years for

  804. but this

  805. promise is

  806. going to be

  807. fulfilled in

  808. minutes

  809. and therefore

  810. the disciples

  811. would have

  812. said to

  813. themselves

  814. he is

  815. amazing

  816. as they

  817. untied that

  818. donkey and

  819. someone comes

  820. and says

  821. exact words

  822. that Jesus

  823. says

  824. what would

  825. you say

  826. to somebody

  827. that says

  828. I'm going

  829. to ride a

  830. donkey

  831. that's never

  832. been ridden

  833. your reaction

  834. is well don't

  835. attempt to

  836. ride it

  837. it's going

  838. to be a

  839. disaster

  840. but Jesus

  841. is lord of

  842. all and so

  843. this is no

  844. problem

  845. so they turn

  846. up they start

  847. to untie the

  848. donkey and

  849. people say

  850. why are you

  851. untying the

  852. donkey and

  853. they say

  854. dot dot dot

  855. and the

  856. owners of

  857. the donkey

  858. say it's

  859. all yours

  860. it's all

  861. yours

  862. so in other

  863. ways nobody

  864. in the scene

  865. is listening

  866. to the word

  867. of God but

  868. the donkey

  869. owners are

  870. listening to

  871. the word of

  872. God

  873. and when

  874. they hear

  875. Jesus needs

  876. it they say

  877. it's all

  878. yours

  879. they cooperate

  880. and the

  881. fourth thing

  882. in verse

  883. three is

  884. Jesus gives

  885. them the

  886. key as to

  887. who he

  888. is

  889. do you

  890. see what

  891. he says

  892. he says

  893. the Lord

  894. has need

  895. of it

  896. the Lord

  897. needs it

  898. the Lord

  899. needs it

  900. and if you're

  901. familiar with

  902. the gospels

  903. you will know

  904. that Jesus

  905. did not throw

  906. the word

  907. Lord

  908. around about

  909. himself

  910. that's not

  911. how he

  912. usually described

  913. himself

  914. in fact he

  915. rarely described

  916. himself in

  917. that way

  918. most of the

  919. time he

  920. called himself

  921. the son of

  922. man

  923. the son of

  924. man is one

  925. of those

  926. phrases like

  927. Bruce Wayne

  928. or like

  929. Clark Kent

  930. it means a

  931. lot doesn't

  932. it if you're

  933. in the

  934. know

  935. but it

  936. doesn't mean

  937. anything

  938. if you're

  939. not in

  940. the know

  941. and son of

  942. man was a

  943. veiled way

  944. of saying

  945. I am

  946. significant

  947. but I'm

  948. not making

  949. it too

  950. obvious

  951. but here he

  952. says the

  953. Lord needs

  954. it and the

  955. word Lord

  956. is the word

  957. used to

  958. describe God

  959. and so

  960. finally he

  961. speaks to

  962. these two

  963. disciples and

  964. he tells them

  965. go into the

  966. city tell the

  967. owners that God

  968. needs the

  969. donkey

  970. Jesus needs

  971. the donkey

  972. and so these

  973. owners of the

  974. donkey get

  975. the point

  976. but I wonder

  977. if the

  978. disciples got

  979. the point

  980. I don't think

  981. they did

  982. did they

  983. Jesus tells

  984. us

  985. John tells

  986. us that

  987. even as they

  988. marched in

  989. with Jesus

  990. on the donkey

  991. they hadn't

  992. listened to the

  993. Old Testament

  994. and they

  995. weren't listening

  996. to Jesus

  997. and they did

  998. not get it

  999. that Jesus

  1000. was on a

  1001. lonely ride

  1002. even though he

  1003. had given

  1004. them a

  1005. loving word

  1006. now this

  1007. instruction is

  1008. to cause the

  1009. disciples

  1010. you and I

  1011. to say

  1012. something like

  1013. this

  1014. Jesus Christ

  1015. he knows

  1016. what's in

  1017. front of us

  1018. this week

  1019. and he is

  1020. in charge

  1021. of the

  1022. future

  1023. and Jesus

  1024. controls

  1025. the uncontrollable

  1026. his words

  1027. are to be

  1028. listened to

  1029. and they are

  1030. to be trusted

  1031. and they are

  1032. to be obeyed

  1033. and he

  1034. describes himself

  1035. as the

  1036. Lord

  1037. and so

  1038. you and I

  1039. have a decision

  1040. to make

  1041. this morning

  1042. what will

  1043. we

  1044. and our

  1045. family

  1046. if we

  1047. have them

  1048. do about

  1049. Jesus Christ

  1050. and if you

  1051. say well he's

  1052. just a prophet

  1053. you've missed

  1054. the point

  1055. and if you

  1056. say he's a

  1057. good man

  1058. and a

  1059. religious leader

  1060. you missed

  1061. the point

  1062. or will

  1063. you say

  1064. he is

  1065. the Lord

  1066. he is

  1067. God

  1068. and me

  1069. and I

  1070. and my

  1071. family

  1072. are only

  1073. going to be

  1074. safe and

  1075. sound

  1076. and wise

  1077. and well

  1078. living under

  1079. the lordship

  1080. and control

  1081. of Jesus

  1082. Christ

  1083. and that

  1084. is the

  1085. decision

  1086. I read a

  1087. book called

  1088. The Strange

  1089. Death of

  1090. Hero

  1091. by

  1092. Douglas

  1093. Murray

  1094. he's not

  1095. a Christian

  1096. and he

  1097. says Europe

  1098. is dying

  1099. because of

  1100. two processes

  1101. one is that

  1102. the whole world

  1103. is moving

  1104. around

  1105. and moving

  1106. in everywhere

  1107. so that the

  1108. views of

  1109. everywhere

  1110. have arrived

  1111. and at the

  1112. same time

  1113. Europe has

  1114. thrown away

  1115. its beliefs

  1116. and its

  1117. values

  1118. and he

  1119. specifically

  1120. mentions

  1121. Europe

  1122. throwing away

  1123. its Christian

  1124. heritage

  1125. Douglas

  1126. Murray

  1127. is not

  1128. a Christian

  1129. by any

  1130. stretch of

  1131. the

  1132. imagination

  1133. and it's

  1134. not a

  1135. really

  1136. revolutionary

  1137. view of

  1138. Europe

  1139. but it

  1140. is simple

  1141. a lot

  1142. of views

  1143. have moved

  1144. in all

  1145. over the

  1146. place

  1147. and the

  1148. foundational

  1149. issue

  1150. has been

  1151. removed

  1152. and he

  1153. says that

  1154. is why

  1155. Europe

  1156. is in

  1157. no place

  1158. to charter

  1159. a course

  1160. for the

  1161. future

  1162. that's why

  1163. it doesn't

  1164. know what

  1165. it's doing

  1166. so that

  1167. when it

  1168. goes to

  1169. make a

  1170. contribution

  1171. to Iraq

  1172. or Libya

  1173. it's got

  1174. no concept

  1175. of the

  1176. right

  1177. way

  1178. and so

  1179. how can

  1180. it

  1181. charter

  1182. a course

  1183. for other

  1184. countries

  1185. it's trying

  1186. to influence

  1187. let alone

  1188. itself

  1189. and what

  1190. the book

  1191. shows is

  1192. a fascinating

  1193. book

  1194. is the

  1195. emptiness

  1196. of the

  1197. world's

  1198. ideas

  1199. and we

  1200. see that

  1201. clearly

  1202. don't we

  1203. in Mark

  1204. 11

  1205. so clearly

  1206. the words

  1207. of men

  1208. here

  1209. in Mark

  1210. 11

  1211. they are

  1212. really

  1213. really

  1214. empty

  1215. they're

  1216. slogans

  1217. that are

  1218. being thrown

  1219. out

  1220. pious

  1221. slogans

  1222. but you

  1223. see this

  1224. contrast

  1225. don't you

  1226. the words

  1227. of men

  1228. so empty

  1229. so futile

  1230. and yet

  1231. the words

  1232. of Jesus

  1233. so powerful

  1234. so true

  1235. so safe

  1236. so foundational

  1237. we listen

  1238. to thousands

  1239. of words

  1240. each day

  1241. most of

  1242. which are

  1243. completely

  1244. useless

  1245. in a

  1246. week's

  1247. time

  1248. just

  1249. think

  1250. of

  1251. all

  1252. the

  1253. things

  1254. that

  1255. are

  1256. being

  1257. said

  1258. today

  1259. that

  1260. would

  1261. be a

  1262. complete

  1263. waste

  1264. of

  1265. space

  1266. this time

  1267. next

  1268. week

  1269. and the

  1270. words

  1271. of

  1272. Jesus

  1273. are

  1274. utterly

  1275. utterly

  1276. utterly

  1277. necessary

  1278. next

  1279. week

  1280. and the

  1281. week

  1282. after

  1283. and the

  1284. week

  1285. after

  1286. that

  1287. and the

  1288. deeds

  1289. of men

  1290. are so

  1291. empty

  1292. all these

  1293. religious

  1294. actions

  1295. all these

  1296. waving of

  1297. branches

  1298. throwing of

  1299. cloaks

  1300. but there's

  1301. no clue

  1302. as to who

  1303. Jesus

  1304. really is

  1305. but when

  1306. you are

  1307. lit up

  1308. by the

  1309. person

  1310. of

  1311. Jesus

  1312. suddenly

  1313. everything

  1314. begins

  1315. to make

  1316. sense

  1317. you

  1318. understand

  1319. that your

  1320. future is

  1321. under

  1322. control

  1323. that you

  1324. have

  1325. promises

  1326. to stand

  1327. on

  1328. and his

  1329. deeds

  1330. make

  1331. your

  1332. deeds

  1333. worthwhile

  1334. and so

  1335. Jesus

  1336. is on a

  1337. very lonely

  1338. road

  1339. but he's

  1340. on a lonely

  1341. road for a

  1342. reason

  1343. he is the

  1344. only one who

  1345. understands

  1346. his mission

  1347. he is the

  1348. only one who

  1349. can do

  1350. his mission

  1351. and within

  1352. five days

  1353. he is going

  1354. to be

  1355. completely

  1356. alone

  1357. and he

  1358. will cry

  1359. on good

  1360. friday

  1361. my god

  1362. my god

  1363. why have

  1364. you

  1365. forsaken

  1366. me

  1367. forsaken

  1368. why

  1369. because he

  1370. will experience

  1371. the darkness

  1372. that our

  1373. sin

  1374. deserves

  1375. in order

  1376. to give us

  1377. freely

  1378. the salvation

  1379. that he

  1380. deserves

  1381. and so I

  1382. need to ask

  1383. you

  1384. whether you

  1385. and I

  1386. are a little

  1387. bit like

  1388. the crowds

  1389. we come

  1390. and we sing

  1391. our songs

  1392. and we

  1393. have a bit

  1394. of a listen

  1395. but no

  1396. change

  1397. or whether

  1398. you're really

  1399. hearing the

  1400. words

  1401. of God

  1402. that Jesus

  1403. is their

  1404. king

  1405. and their
