  1. Christ is risen.

  2. He is risen.

  3. Any event in history, no matter what event you choose, there's always different perspectives, aren't there?

  4. ! Everyone is different. We all see things differently from our own point of view.

  5. ! So let's take church this morning.

  6. As an example, somebody asks you tomorrow, what was church like yesterday?

  7. What impression it made on you?

  8. And there's no doubt, is it, that your answer would be different from the person sitting next to you, probably.

  9. And your answer would certainly be different from mine.

  10. Both your answers would be different.

  11. We all have attended the same church.

  12. We've attended the same church service.

  13. At the same time, in the same place.

  14. And all our answers may well be reliable and true, but they wouldn't be the same.

  15. They wouldn't be the same, would they?

  16. We all have different perspectives.

  17. And that's true with any historical event and any eyewitness testimony.

  18. And so it's no less true that when we come to the resurrection of Jesus,

  19. many people at that time, they were aware that there was something strange that had happened,

  20. something surprising.

  21. Some people were beginning to develop really firm convictions about what had happened.

  22. Some other people were just confused by it all.

  23. But over time, people's understanding grew in clarity.

  24. And a consensus emerged about what had happened.

  25. And that is when people like Luke began to write it down.

  26. But when he did, he still had a lot of choices to make.

  27. Luke would have had to ask himself,

  28. how should I tell the story of the resurrection of Jesus?

  29. What perspective shall I share?

  30. What shall I include?

  31. What shall I leave out?

  32. You can't write everything, can you?

  33. But guided by the spirit of the risen Jesus,

  34. Luke made his decisions and he wrote his great chapter, Luke 24.

  35. And as we reflect on that,

  36. I want us to try and think about the decisions that he made

  37. when he wrote this chapter.

  38. I want us to think about, for a few moments,

  39. how he chose to tell this story.

  40. And the first thing I want you to notice is what he leaves out.

  41. It's fascinating, isn't it?

  42. We're not actually told how Jesus' resurrection actually happened.

  43. We're not told how the stone was rolled away from the tomb.

  44. We're not told what happened to the soldiers

  45. who were guarding right in front of the tomb.

  46. We're not told what Jesus did or said

  47. when his body surged with life again.

  48. We're not told whether he walked out of the tomb

  49. or whether he simply disappeared.

  50. We're not told any of that.

  51. And in one sense, as you think about what is not in the story,

  52. it all makes sense.

  53. And it's all easy to understand

  54. because nobody saw those things today.

  55. This is an eyewitness account.

  56. It would have no place in an eyewitness account.

  57. So instead, as we read Luke 24,

  58. I don't know whether you picked it up,

  59. we experience the resurrection through eyewitnesses.

  60. How the eyewitnesses themselves experienced the resurrection.

  61. How they encountered the empty tomb.

  62. And the risen Jesus himself.

  63. And the effect of that, of course,

  64. is to authenticate the resurrection.

  65. And the way we know that the resurrection happened

  66. is not by some scientific explanation

  67. of a dead body being raised to life.

  68. But we look at the testimonies of the people who were there.

  69. Who saw the person who two days earlier

  70. had been undeniably dead.

  71. And the other effect of reading the story this way

  72. is we're given an insight into the impact of the event

  73. on people.

  74. You see, as we come on Easter Sunday

  75. and celebrate the resurrection,

  76. we're not just dealing here with facts.

  77. We're dealing with people's reactions and emotions.

  78. We come to face-to-face with the impression

  79. that the risen Jesus made on people.

  80. And because of that, I think we'll find that Luke's story

  81. raises questions about how you should react to it.

  82. And how I should respond to it.

  83. And how you should feel about it.

  84. Secondly, I want to point out to you

  85. that Luke's chosen method is to tell

  86. three separate stories,

  87. but all set on one remarkable day.

  88. He doesn't choose to tell us anything

  89. about the first Easter Monday.

  90. Or the Tuesday.

  91. Or the rest of the week.

  92. In fact, apart from a short description

  93. of Jesus' later ascension in the final two verses,

  94. the whole chapter is devoted to telling us

  95. the experiences of people

  96. on the very first Easter day.

  97. The Sunday after the Friday

  98. Jesus was crucified and killed.

  99. So in the first of the three stories,

  100. in verses 1 to 12,

  101. he tells us about the women

  102. who came to the tomb

  103. to assist in the embalming process

  104. for Jesus' body.

  105. And they find the tomb

  106. surprisingly empty

  107. and the body is gone

  108. and they are deeply confused by all of it.

  109. But when the two angels appear to them

  110. and tell them that they are looking

  111. for the living amongst the dead,

  112. then it occurred to them

  113. that this was just as Jesus had predicted earlier.

  114. Like the angel said so.

  115. And so the women,

  116. they race back to tell the men.

  117. And most of the men,

  118. when they hear these women speak,

  119. they think the women are

  120. a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

  121. They can't believe it.

  122. But Peter, at least,

  123. he hopped for the second of the tomb

  124. and he saw what the women had seen.

  125. He saw an empty cave

  126. with the strips of linen

  127. which a few hours earlier

  128. had wrapped the body of Jesus.

  129. In the second of Luke's stories,

  130. in verses 13 to 25,

  131. a couple of Jesus' disciples

  132. meet Jesus on the road

  133. while they're travelling.

  134. I'm going to come back to that

  135. in a few moments.

  136. In the third story,

  137. in verses 36 to 59,

  138. many of Jesus' friends

  139. are gathered together

  140. when all of a sudden

  141. Jesus appears

  142. right in the middle of them.

  143. And he proves to them

  144. that he's not a ghost,

  145. that he's a living human being

  146. come back to life.

  147. The sort of human being

  148. that eats fish

  149. and explains things to people.

  150. And he explains to them

  151. how everything

  152. that has taken place

  153. is in fulfilment

  154. to what the Old Testament

  155. foreshadowed,

  156. looked forward to.

  157. So there's Luke's three stories.

  158. But they are united

  159. by one 24-hour period,

  160. one day.

  161. Verse 13.

  162. That very day,

  163. two of them

  164. were going to a village

  165. named Emmaus,

  166. about seven miles from Jerusalem.

  167. And they were talking

  168. to each other

  169. about these things

  170. that had happened.

  171. verse 36.

  172. As they were talking

  173. about these things,

  174. Jesus himself

  175. stood among them

  176. and said,

  177. Peace be to you.

  178. And then,

  179. it's some 24 hours,

  180. isn't it?

  181. Their heads

  182. must have been spinning.

  183. But nevertheless,

  184. as the chapter goes on,

  185. it becomes clearer and clearer

  186. as what has happened.

  187. So verse 6.

  188. He is not here,

  189. but he has risen.

  190. Verse 34.

  191. The Lord has risen.

  192. Verse 46.

  193. Thus it is written

  194. that the Christ should suffer

  195. and on the third day

  196. rise from the dead.

  197. And given

  198. that at that moment

  199. it was the Christ

  200. who spoke to them

  201. at that moment

  202. and it was the third day

  203. since he's been killed,

  204. I think we'd have to say

  205. he's pretty right.

  206. Now let me give you

  207. the major theme

  208. of Luke 24.

  209. What is the big theme

  210. as you read the chapter?

  211. That Luke draws

  212. our attention to

  213. in the way that he tells you

  214. as to observe it.

  215. What is it that Luke

  216. wants you to know?

  217. In each of these

  218. three incidents

  219. we see

  220. the confusion

  221. of the disciples

  222. but also the clarity

  223. of God's word.

  224. That's what ties them together.

  225. The confusion

  226. of the disciples

  227. and the clarity

  228. of God's word.

  229. So let's go through them.

  230. In the first of the three

  231. stories,

  232. the women are standing

  233. at the entrance

  234. of the tomb

  235. and they're trying

  236. to make sense of it.

  237. It's emptiness.

  238. They're confused,

  239. very confused.

  240. But then the angel

  241. comes and the angel

  242. brings a very clear

  243. word from God.

  244. There is nothing

  245. more or less

  246. than what Jesus

  247. had told them

  248. previously.

  249. He was no longer

  250. dead.

  251. He died according

  252. to God's purpose

  253. but he's been raised

  254. again according

  255. to God's power.

  256. And then they remembered

  257. what Jesus said

  258. and it all starts

  259. to make sense to them.

  260. The confused disciples

  261. but the clear

  262. word of God.

  263. In the second story

  264. we see the same

  265. dynamic at work.

  266. The two companions

  267. they walked down

  268. the road

  269. they didn't understand

  270. what happened

  271. to Jesus and why.

  272. They didn't even

  273. recognise the person

  274. talking to them.

  275. But when their

  276. eyes were opened

  277. the words of Jesus

  278. began to make sense

  279. to them.

  280. Confused disciples

  281. God's clear word.

  282. And then in the

  283. third story

  284. we see the same

  285. thing.

  286. The gathered

  287. disciples.

  288. First Jesus

  289. is amongst them

  290. in that room

  291. and they are

  292. amazed and they

  293. are troubled

  294. and they're joyful

  295. and they're confused

  296. all at the same

  297. time.

  298. But as he speaks

  299. to them

  300. all the bits

  301. of the jigsaw

  302. puzzle begin to

  303. fit into place

  304. and they come to

  305. understand that

  306. not just his

  307. resurrection

  308. but they come to

  309. understand everything

  310. that's gone on

  311. before.

  312. Confused

  313. disciples

  314. God's clear

  315. word.

  316. And Luke's

  317. point to you

  318. and I this

  319. morning couldn't

  320. be more plain.

  321. In the midst

  322. of confusion

  323. or doubt

  324. or uncertainty

  325. it is the

  326. word that

  327. God sends.

  328. The word that

  329. Jesus himself

  330. speaks that

  331. brings clarity

  332. that disciples

  333. need.

  334. and I hope

  335. as we go

  336. through this

  337. middle story

  338. that this

  339. theme will

  340. become clearer

  341. to us over

  342. the next 10

  343. minutes or so.

  344. And I hope

  345. its importance

  346. will be very

  347. clear.

  348. And so what I

  349. want to do

  350. is I want to

  351. focus on this

  352. middle story of

  353. Jesus walking

  354. along the road

  355. with two

  356. companions.

  357. Because I think

  358. all the major

  359. notes of the

  360. chapter are

  361. struck in this

  362. story and I

  363. hope it will

  364. strike you like

  365. it struck me.

  366. So let me

  367. take you through

  368. the story.

  369. And I've got

  370. points like I

  371. usually do but

  372. what you'll see

  373. in Luke 24 is

  374. you'll find

  375. different parts

  376. of the body.

  377. And so let's

  378. look at the

  379. body in Luke

  380. 24.

  381. Verse 13

  382. That very day

  383. two of them

  384. were going to

  385. a village named

  386. Emmaus.

  387. About seven

  388. miles from

  389. Jerusalem.

  390. And they were

  391. talking with

  392. each other about

  393. all these things

  394. that had happened.

  395. And while they

  396. were talking and

  397. discussing,

  398. Jesus himself

  399. to Nia and

  400. went with

  401. them.

  402. Here are two

  403. disciples.

  404. And they could

  405. have been friends.

  406. And they could

  407. have been husband

  408. and wife.

  409. We're not sure.

  410. And they set

  411. out for a

  412. seven mile walk

  413. from Jerusalem

  414. to Emmaus.

  415. And as they

  416. walked, they

  417. talked.

  418. As their legs

  419. carried them,

  420. their mouths

  421. churned over the

  422. events of the

  423. previous days.

  424. How Jesus

  425. had been

  426. arrested and

  427. killed.

  428. How the

  429. women had

  430. come back

  431. from the

  432. tomb that

  433. morning saying

  434. it was empty

  435. that he wasn't

  436. there anymore.

  437. And then there's

  438. Jesus, isn't

  439. there?

  440. And walking

  441. with his legs

  442. and talking

  443. with his mouth.

  444. them.

  445. But the

  446. question that

  447. he asks

  448. leads them

  449. to downcast

  450. faces.

  451. Can you see

  452. that in

  453. verse 17?

  454. And he

  455. said to

  456. them, what

  457. is this

  458. conversation

  459. that you

  460. are holding

  461. with each

  462. other as

  463. you walk?

  464. And they

  465. stood still

  466. looking sad.

  467. they looked

  468. sad.

  469. Then one of

  470. them, named

  471. Cleopas,

  472. answered him,

  473. are you the

  474. only visitor

  475. to Jerusalem

  476. who does not

  477. know the

  478. things that

  479. have happened

  480. in these

  481. days?

  482. It's almost

  483. amusing to

  484. Cleopas and

  485. his companion

  486. that Jesus

  487. doesn't know

  488. what went

  489. down in

  490. Jerusalem last

  491. week.

  492. Everyone's

  493. been talking

  494. about it.

  495. Everyone knows

  496. about it.

  497. It would be

  498. like somebody

  499. coming into

  500. the office and

  501. hearing people

  502. talk about the

  503. cheating Australian

  504. cricketers and

  505. asking, what?

  506. What are you

  507. talking about?

  508. You'd think,

  509. couldn't you,

  510. they'd been

  511. living under a

  512. rock or

  513. something.

  514. Because

  515. everybody's

  516. heard about

  517. it this

  518. last week.

  519. Jesus

  520. continues.

  521. Jesus

  522. continues to

  523. play along as

  524. if he is

  525. the ignorant

  526. one.

  527. And in

  528. response, the

  529. two downcast

  530. travellers, they

  531. give an

  532. explanation.

  533. They give an

  534. explanation for

  535. the sad

  536. faces.

  537. They say, we

  538. knew Jesus

  539. was a prophet

  540. and that he

  541. was powerful

  542. and we had

  543. really high

  544. hopes for

  545. Jesus and

  546. we hoped

  547. that he was

  548. going to be

  549. the one to

  550. redeem

  551. Israel.

  552. They hoped

  553. that he

  554. would be

  555. the Messiah.

  556. They hoped

  557. that he

  558. would be

  559. God's

  560. promised

  561. king.

  562. And then

  563. all of a

  564. sudden, he's

  565. gone.

  566. He's been

  567. arrested and

  568. killed.

  569. And even

  570. his body's

  571. vanished now.

  572. It's

  573. impossible to

  574. miss the

  575. irony of

  576. Jesus himself

  577. hearing this

  578. story from

  579. his disciples

  580. all the

  581. while telling

  582. it to him

  583. as if he's

  584. the most

  585. ignorant

  586. man in

  587. the world.

  588. And that

  589. is because

  590. not only

  591. did these

  592. people have

  593. downcast

  594. faces, but

  595. they have

  596. slow hearts,

  597. the next bit

  598. of the body.

  599. And Jesus

  600. tells them that

  601. in verse 25.

  602. And he

  603. said to

  604. them,

  605. O foolish

  606. ones,

  607. and slow

  608. of heart

  609. to believe

  610. all the

  611. prophets

  612. have spoken.

  613. Was it

  614. not necessary

  615. that Christ

  616. should suffer

  617. these things

  618. and enter

  619. into his

  620. glory?

  621. And beginning

  622. with Moses

  623. and all the

  624. prophets,

  625. that's the

  626. Old Testament,

  627. he interpreted

  628. to them

  629. in all the

  630. scriptures

  631. the things

  632. concerning

  633. himself.

  634. So they've

  635. concluded,

  636. haven't they,

  637. Jesus is the

  638. slow one.

  639. But Jesus

  640. now here

  641. turns the

  642. tables,

  643. and he

  644. says,

  645. no,

  646. you are

  647. the

  648. slow

  649. ones.

  650. You should

  651. have known

  652. what was

  653. going to

  654. happen.

  655. From your

  656. reading of

  657. the Old

  658. Testament,

  659. you should

  660. have known

  661. that the

  662. Messiah,

  663. when he

  664. came,

  665. would have

  666. to suffer

  667. and die

  668. before he's

  669. glorified.

  670. It shouldn't

  671. have taken

  672. you by

  673. surprise,

  674. Jesus said.

  675. You shouldn't

  676. have been

  677. confused or

  678. downcast.

  679. You should

  680. have simply

  681. believed God's

  682. word through

  683. the prophets

  684. in the Old

  685. Testament.

  686. But their

  687. hearts were

  688. slow.

  689. But as

  690. Jesus

  691. diagnosed the

  692. slowness of

  693. their hearts,

  694. their hearts

  695. also began to

  696. burn.

  697. Verse 32.

  698. After it's

  699. dawned on

  700. Cleopas,

  701. and his

  702. companion who

  703. they're talking

  704. to, we hear

  705. them discussing

  706. with Jesus the

  707. discussion that

  708. they've had on

  709. the road.

  710. And they're

  711. told, that they

  712. said to each

  713. other, were

  714. not our hearts

  715. burning within

  716. us?

  717. when he

  718. talked to

  719. us on the

  720. road and

  721. he opened

  722. up to

  723. us the

  724. Bible.

  725. They may

  726. have been

  727. slow up to

  728. that point,

  729. but as

  730. the Christ

  731. explained the

  732. Christ to

  733. them, it

  734. was as if

  735. somebody lit

  736. a match

  737. under the

  738. kindling of

  739. their partial

  740. knowledge, and

  741. they began to

  742. grasp.

  743. They began to

  744. understand more

  745. fully what the

  746. Bible had been

  747. saying all

  748. along.

  749. And they

  750. began to

  751. understand that

  752. what they were

  753. hearing was

  754. true, and

  755. they began to

  756. love this

  757. truth with a

  758. glow.

  759. But they

  760. still didn't

  761. see it all

  762. clearly.

  763. That comes

  764. next.

  765. That comes

  766. when Jesus

  767. moves them

  768. from their

  769. slow hearts

  770. to burning

  771. hearts, to

  772. people of

  773. being open

  774. eyes.

  775. That's the

  776. next part of

  777. the body.

  778. To open

  779. eyes.

  780. Because it

  781. was nearly

  782. evening.

  783. The two

  784. travellers,

  785. they invite

  786. Jesus, would

  787. you stay

  788. with us in

  789. Emmaus for

  790. the night.

  791. And as they

  792. sat down to

  793. eat, Jesus

  794. did a most

  795. unexpected thing.

  796. He plays

  797. the host

  798. rather than

  799. the guest.

  800. So he

  801. takes the

  802. bread.

  803. And he

  804. gives thanks

  805. to God, and

  806. he broke

  807. it, and he

  808. passed it to

  809. his two

  810. travelling

  811. companions.

  812. And it

  813. is at that

  814. moment, as

  815. he does

  816. that, the

  817. light dispels.

  818. And the

  819. last trace

  820. of darkness

  821. of their

  822. understanding

  823. goes.

  824. Back in

  825. verse 16

  826. we're told

  827. that they

  828. had been

  829. kept from

  830. recognising

  831. Jesus.

  832. God had

  833. closed their

  834. eyes.

  835. But now

  836. he opens

  837. them.

  838. And at

  839. that very

  840. moment, Jesus

  841. vanished.

  842. But it

  843. didn't matter

  844. to them that

  845. he vanished,

  846. because the

  847. lights were

  848. switched on,

  849. and they

  850. understood who

  851. he was.

  852. And now

  853. they realise

  854. that it is to

  855. him that the

  856. whole of the

  857. Old Testament

  858. pointed to.

  859. And now

  860. they realise

  861. what Jesus

  862. himself was

  863. bearing witness

  864. to.

  865. And because

  866. they did

  867. that, they

  868. were instantly

  869. transformed into

  870. witnesses as

  871. well.

  872. They didn't

  873. waste another

  874. second.

  875. They knew

  876. that their

  877. newfound

  878. understanding of

  879. who Jesus

  880. is needed

  881. to be shared,

  882. so they

  883. couldn't send

  884. an email or

  885. a text.

  886. There was no

  887. phone to

  888. call, there

  889. was no

  890. Facebook to

  891. broadcast on,

  892. there was no

  893. Twitter to

  894. tweet out.

  895. And so

  896. having walked

  897. seven miles

  898. to get to

  899. Jerusalem,

  900. they promptly

  901. turn around

  902. and they

  903. walk seven

  904. miles back.

  905. And they

  906. get their

  907. legs going

  908. again.

  909. And when

  910. they arrive,

  911. they get

  912. their talking

  913. mouths going

  914. again.

  915. And they

  916. found their

  917. friends,

  918. Jesus'

  919. disciples,

  920. huddled

  921. together in

  922. some room,

  923. perhaps it's

  924. the same

  925. room where

  926. they were

  927. on the

  928. Thursday

  929. night,

  930. where they

  931. shared the

  932. Lord's

  933. Supper

  934. together.

  935. But wherever

  936. they were,

  937. Cleopas and

  938. his companion

  939. barge in

  940. only to

  941. discover that

  942. the other

  943. disciples of

  944. Jesus have

  945. come to

  946. the same

  947. realisation.

  948. The lights

  949. have been

  950. switched on

  951. there too.

  952. God had

  953. opened their

  954. eyes.

  955. And so

  956. they spent

  957. the next

  958. little while

  959. just swapping

  960. their stories.

  961. Now it's

  962. interesting that

  963. Cleopas and

  964. his companion

  965. are present

  966. for all three

  967. of these

  968. incidents in

  969. Luke 24.

  970. They were

  971. there when

  972. the women

  973. turned up

  974. talking about

  975. the empty

  976. tomb in

  977. the morning.

  978. They were

  979. the ones

  980. who walked

  981. the long

  982. journey from

  983. Jerusalem to

  984. Emmaus and

  985. later that

  986. night from

  987. Jerusalem back

  988. to Emmaus.

  989. And they

  990. were in

  991. the room

  992. with all

  993. the disciples

  994. when Jesus

  995. turned up

  996. and spoke

  997. to them.

  998. Cleopas and

  999. this companion,

  1000. they are right

  1001. in the centre

  1002. of Luke 24

  1003. in this chapter.

  1004. And that is

  1005. because Luke

  1006. wants you

  1007. to see

  1008. and wants

  1009. me to

  1010. see that

  1011. what happened

  1012. to them

  1013. is not

  1014. because they

  1015. were unique,

  1016. it's because

  1017. they are not

  1018. unique.

  1019. What happened

  1020. to them

  1021. was indicative

  1022. of what was

  1023. about to happen

  1024. to a bunch

  1025. of people.

  1026. Like them

  1027. at the same

  1028. time.

  1029. And what

  1030. happened to

  1031. at the end

  1032. of the day

  1033. is something

  1034. that Luke

  1035. happens,

  1036. Luke hopes

  1037. will happen

  1038. to everyone

  1039. who reads

  1040. his gospel.

  1041. He hopes

  1042. it will

  1043. happen to

  1044. you this

  1045. morning.

  1046. He hopes

  1047. that you

  1048. and I

  1049. as we

  1050. look at

  1051. the evidence,

  1052. as we

  1053. look at

  1054. the difference

  1055. that Jesus

  1056. makes,

  1057. that we

  1058. will be

  1059. transformed

  1060. by what

  1061. we discover.

  1062. That we

  1063. will be

  1064. amazed to

  1065. learn that

  1066. Jesus is

  1067. the Christ

  1068. and that

  1069. he is

  1070. alive and

  1071. he hopes

  1072. that we

  1073. will get

  1074. our

  1075. walking

  1076. legs

  1077. and our

  1078. talking

  1079. mouths

  1080. going.

  1081. And bear

  1082. witness

  1083. to what

  1084. we have

  1085. come to

  1086. see.

  1087. Certainly

  1088. the

  1089. transformation

  1090. that these

  1091. two

  1092. underwent

  1093. isn't it?

  1094. They began

  1095. the journey

  1096. to Emmaus

  1097. simply as

  1098. sad friends,

  1099. companions

  1100. in their

  1101. sadness,

  1102. but by

  1103. the end

  1104. of the

  1105. section

  1106. they are

  1107. joyful

  1108. witnesses

  1109. on the

  1110. journey.

  1111. They

  1112. were

  1113. downcast,

  1114. but on

  1115. the way

  1116. back

  1117. they're

  1118. elated.

  1119. They had

  1120. news that

  1121. must be

  1122. told,

  1123. they had

  1124. a song

  1125. in their

  1126. hearts,

  1127. and the

  1128. difference

  1129. was simple.

  1130. They've

  1131. met the

  1132. risen

  1133. Jesus.

  1134. That's

  1135. what Luke

  1136. hopes will

  1137. happen to

  1138. you and

  1139. to me.

  1140. That's

  1141. why this

  1142. chapter exists

  1143. in the

  1144. Bible.

  1145. It's

  1146. really important

  1147. that you

  1148. grasp that.

  1149. Why did

  1150. Luke write

  1151. his

  1152. gospel?

  1153. People

  1154. treat the

  1155. gospel of

  1156. Luke and

  1157. the other

  1158. gospels in

  1159. different ways.

  1160. Some people

  1161. like to see it

  1162. as a work of

  1163. fiction.

  1164. Some people

  1165. like to see it

  1166. as a kind of

  1167. historical

  1168. artefact.

  1169. Perhaps

  1170. some see it

  1171. as a

  1172. mystical

  1173. form of

  1174. spiritual

  1175. inspiration.

  1176. none of

  1177. those

  1178. descriptions

  1179. hit the

  1180. mark.

  1181. Because

  1182. this book

  1183. and this

  1184. chapter was

  1185. written with

  1186. a very

  1187. specific

  1188. purpose.

  1189. It was

  1190. written to

  1191. transform your

  1192. life and

  1193. mine.

  1194. It's

  1195. written to

  1196. change people

  1197. like you

  1198. and people

  1199. like me.

  1200. And Luke

  1201. wrote this

  1202. because he

  1203. had come to

  1204. know that

  1205. the risen

  1206. Lord Jesus

  1207. wants to

  1208. take your

  1209. life and

  1210. move you

  1211. from being

  1212. sad and

  1213. downcast

  1214. and

  1215. distracted.

  1216. Perhaps

  1217. even

  1218. driven

  1219. or lonely

  1220. or successful

  1221. or content

  1222. or obsessed

  1223. or happy

  1224. or disappointed

  1225. or whatever

  1226. you are this

  1227. morning.

  1228. He wants

  1229. to take

  1230. your life

  1231. and move

  1232. you from

  1233. where you

  1234. were to

  1235. being a

  1236. joyful

  1237. witness

  1238. of the

  1239. risen

  1240. Jesus.

  1241. And

  1242. down through

  1243. the last

  1244. 2,000 years

  1245. that's exactly

  1246. what's

  1247. happened.

  1248. to

  1249. thousands

  1250. and thousands

  1251. of people

  1252. who've engaged

  1253. with this

  1254. chapter.

  1255. And some

  1256. of those

  1257. people are

  1258. in this

  1259. room right

  1260. now.

  1261. And we

  1262. found that

  1263. as we

  1264. began to

  1265. read the

  1266. account of

  1267. Jesus'

  1268. resurrection

  1269. and engage

  1270. with him

  1271. our hearts

  1272. have begun

  1273. to burn

  1274. and our

  1275. eyes have

  1276. come to

  1277. be opened.

  1278. And as the

  1279. lights have

  1280. come on

  1281. we've

  1282. begun to

  1283. realise

  1284. that we've

  1285. met Jesus

  1286. Christ

  1287. who was

  1288. dead

  1289. but is

  1290. now alive.

  1291. And since

  1292. he is

  1293. alive and

  1294. since we've

  1295. actually met

  1296. him we've

  1297. come to

  1298. realise that

  1299. we actually

  1300. want nothing

  1301. more than

  1302. others to

  1303. know that

  1304. as well.

  1305. To know

  1306. what we

  1307. know.

  1308. And to see

  1309. what we've

  1310. seen.

  1311. And that

  1312. is how

  1313. this story

  1314. meets your

  1315. story.

  1316. And

  1317. intersects

  1318. with it

  1319. and transforms

  1320. it.

  1321. And my

  1322. hope is

  1323. if that

  1324. hasn't

  1325. happened

  1326. to you

  1327. yet

  1328. that it

  1329. will this

  1330. Easter.

  1331. And even

  1332. if it has

  1333. happened to

  1334. you I

  1335. hope that

  1336. this

  1337. transformation

  1338. that this

  1339. chapter

  1340. describes

  1341. would take

  1342. place more

  1343. and more.

  1344. That's what

  1345. I hope for

  1346. myself.

  1347. Until I

  1348. finish I

  1349. just want to

  1350. point out

  1351. to you the

  1352. two things

  1353. that I

  1354. think this

  1355. passage leave

  1356. us with.

  1357. I want to

  1358. say they

  1359. are the

  1360. two ingredients

  1361. of how

  1362. your life

  1363. and how

  1364. my life

  1365. gets

  1366. transformed.

  1367. Of course

  1368. if you're

  1369. not interested

  1370. in being

  1371. transformed you

  1372. should just

  1373. tune out

  1374. right now.

  1375. But if

  1376. you want

  1377. God to

  1378. change your

  1379. life and

  1380. if you want

  1381. God to

  1382. enrich your

  1383. life and

  1384. empower your

  1385. life and

  1386. if you want

  1387. to know

  1388. Jesus better

  1389. and I'm

  1390. assuming that's

  1391. why you're

  1392. here this

  1393. morning I

  1394. want to urge

  1395. you to pay

  1396. attention to

  1397. these two

  1398. things that

  1399. Luke 24

  1400. leaves you

  1401. with.

  1402. And the

  1403. two things

  1404. are this

  1405. what we

  1406. can do

  1407. and secondly

  1408. what only

  1409. God can

  1410. do.

  1411. So what

  1412. is it that

  1413. you can do?

  1414. What is it

  1415. that Luke 24

  1416. teaches you

  1417. that you

  1418. can do?

  1419. And what

  1420. we can do

  1421. is open

  1422. the scriptures

  1423. the Bible

  1424. open the

  1425. scriptures

  1426. because that

  1427. is the way

  1428. that we can

  1429. pay attention

  1430. to God's

  1431. word.

  1432. What have we

  1433. seen this

  1434. morning?

  1435. We've seen

  1436. this morning

  1437. haven't we?

  1438. That it is

  1439. the word of

  1440. God that

  1441. brings clarity

  1442. to confusion.

  1443. And so

  1444. we ought to

  1445. expect that

  1446. even now

  1447. the word

  1448. of God

  1449. will be the

  1450. best remedy

  1451. for our

  1452. confusion.

  1453. And when

  1454. we open

  1455. the scriptures

  1456. when we

  1457. read the

  1458. Bible we

  1459. will find

  1460. what the

  1461. disciples in

  1462. Luke 24

  1463. found that

  1464. the whole

  1465. of the

  1466. Old Testament

  1467. the left

  1468. hand side

  1469. of your

  1470. Bible

  1471. bears witness

  1472. to Jesus

  1473. and that

  1474. Jesus

  1475. himself

  1476. shines light

  1477. onto

  1478. everything

  1479. and that

  1480. the New

  1481. Testament

  1482. has come

  1483. down to

  1484. us

  1485. because of

  1486. the very

  1487. experiences

  1488. that this

  1489. chapter

  1490. describes.

  1491. The New

  1492. Testament

  1493. is basically

  1494. written by

  1495. people who

  1496. were eyewitnesses

  1497. of Jesus'

  1498. resurrection.

  1499. People who

  1500. were transformed

  1501. by their

  1502. encounter

  1503. with the

  1504. risen Jesus.

  1505. And so

  1506. if you want

  1507. to know

  1508. the risen

  1509. Jesus

  1510. read the

  1511. scriptures.

  1512. And if you

  1513. want to be

  1514. transformed

  1515. by the

  1516. risen Jesus

  1517. read the

  1518. scriptures.

  1519. And if you

  1520. want the

  1521. resurrection

  1522. power of

  1523. Jesus at

  1524. work in

  1525. your life

  1526. develop an

  1527. appetite for

  1528. the scriptures.

  1529. Treasure

  1530. God's

  1531. word.

  1532. Bathe in

  1533. it.

  1534. Don't

  1535. take it

  1536. for granted.

  1537. Love it.

  1538. Learn from

  1539. it.

  1540. Live by

  1541. it.

  1542. Because if

  1543. you do

  1544. that we

  1545. will be

  1546. joyful

  1547. witnesses of

  1548. Christ for

  1549. no other

  1550. reason than

  1551. that we've

  1552. come to

  1553. know him

  1554. personally.

  1555. Jesus who

  1556. died lives.

  1557. And he

  1558. speaks to

  1559. us as he

  1560. spoke to

  1561. them.

  1562. And when

  1563. we listen

  1564. attentively we

  1565. will be

  1566. transformed.

  1567. That's what

  1568. we can do.

  1569. Open the

  1570. scriptures.

  1571. But the

  1572. other key

  1573. ingredient to

  1574. transformation

  1575. is something

  1576. that we

  1577. can't do.

  1578. That only

  1579. God can

  1580. do.

  1581. And that

  1582. is open

  1583. our eyes.

  1584. And that

  1585. was the

  1586. experience

  1587. wasn't it

  1588. of the

  1589. two

  1590. travelers on

  1591. the road

  1592. to Emmaus.

  1593. And it's

  1594. also the

  1595. experience of

  1596. verse 45

  1597. where it

  1598. describes all

  1599. the disciples.

  1600. Verse 45

  1601. Then he

  1602. said to them

  1603. these are my

  1604. words that I

  1605. spoke to you

  1606. while I was

  1607. still with

  1608. you that

  1609. everything

  1610. written about

  1611. me in the

  1612. law of

  1613. Moses and

  1614. the prophets

  1615. and the

  1616. Psalms must

  1617. be fulfilled.

  1618. Verse 45

  1619. Then he

  1620. opened their

  1621. minds to

  1622. understand

  1623. the scriptures.

  1624. At the

  1625. end of the

  1626. day you

  1627. will not

  1628. believe that

  1629. Jesus rose

  1630. from the

  1631. dead

  1632. unless God

  1633. opens your

  1634. eyes.

  1635. And you

  1636. won't know

  1637. him unless

  1638. he opens

  1639. your mind.

  1640. And we

  1641. won't see

  1642. him for

  1643. who he

  1644. is and be

  1645. transformed by

  1646. the risen

  1647. Jesus unless

  1648. God flicks

  1649. the light

  1650. on us.

  1651. And what

  1652. that means

  1653. of course is

  1654. that if you

  1655. don't believe

  1656. in the

  1657. risen Jesus

  1658. yet and

  1659. if you

  1660. don't follow

  1661. him and

  1662. if you

  1663. don't live

  1664. for him and

  1665. if you don't

  1666. love him but

  1667. you want to

  1668. you can't

  1669. manufacture this.

  1670. Instead

  1671. right now

  1672. right now

  1673. you call out

  1674. to God in

  1675. prayer and

  1676. you ask him

  1677. to bring

  1678. light to

  1679. your eyes

  1680. and to

  1681. open your

  1682. mind.

  1683. And what

  1684. it also

  1685. means is

  1686. that if you

  1687. long for

  1688. greater

  1689. transformation

  1690. in the

  1691. Christian life

  1692. and if you

  1693. long for a

  1694. clearer vision

  1695. of the

  1696. resurrected

  1697. Jesus,

  1698. if you

  1699. long to be

  1700. a more

  1701. joyful witness

  1702. for him,

  1703. then the

  1704. answer to

  1705. your longings

  1706. is you

  1707. need to

  1708. pray and

  1709. I need

  1710. to pray

  1711. that God

  1712. would bring

  1713. lights to

  1714. my eyes.

  1715. And the

  1716. message of

  1717. the Bible

  1718. is that when

  1719. you pray

  1720. like that

  1721. earnestly

  1722. and humbly,

  1723. when he

  1724. answers and

  1725. it is a

  1726. prayer that

  1727. he loves to

  1728. answer,

  1729. you will

  1730. see and

  1731. you will

  1732. know and

  1733. we will

  1734. live like

  1735. Jesus who

  1736. died and

  1737. really did

  1738. rise again

  1739. and really

  1740. is alive

  1741. today.

  1742. And we

  1743. really do

  1744. have a

  1745. relationship

  1746. with him.

  1747. And that

  1748. of course

  1749. is an

  1750. astonishing

  1751. thing to

  1752. say,

  1753. isn't it?

  1754. A

  1755. relationship

  1756. with Jesus

  1757. Christ.

  1758. It's

  1759. almost too

  1760. impossible to

  1761. believe,

  1762. isn't it?

  1763. And yet

  1764. that is

  1765. what is on

  1766. offer to

  1767. you this

  1768. Easter Sunday

  1769. morning.

  1770. And this

  1771. chapter is

  1772. written so

  1773. that you

  1774. might take

  1775. up the

  1776. offer of

  1777. that

  1778. relationship.

  1779. that we

  1780. might find

  1781. like those

  1782. disciples,

  1783. our

  1784. confusion

  1785. evaporating

  1786. in the

  1787. light of

  1788. his

  1789. clear

  1790. word.

  1791. And that

  1792. we,

  1793. like those

  1794. disciples,

  1795. might find

  1796. our eyes

  1797. open to

  1798. see the

  1799. risen Jesus

  1800. and so

  1801. be irreversibly

  1802. changed by

  1803. him.

  1804. And I

  1805. don't know

  1806. about you,

  1807. but as I

  1808. study this

  1809. chapter,

  1810. I find

  1811. myself

  1812. freshly

  1813. stunned

  1814. that the

  1815. Jesus who

  1816. lived

  1817. and died

  1818. 2,000 years

  1819. ago,

  1820. lives in

  1821. 2018 and

  1822. I know

  1823. him.

  1824. Not just

  1825. as someone

  1826. who is the

  1827. central character

  1828. in an

  1829. ancient story,

  1830. but as

  1831. someone I'm

  1832. actually in a

  1833. relationship

  1834. with.

  1835. And once

  1836. again,

  1837. as we think

  1838. about this,

  1839. we pinch

  1840. ourselves,

  1841. don't we,

  1842. as we

  1843. contemplate it.

  1844. it really

  1845. is an

  1846. incredible

  1847. thing,

  1848. and I

  1849. can't speak

  1850. for you,

  1851. but for

  1852. myself,

  1853. I really

  1854. do want

  1855. to know

  1856. him better.

  1857. And I

  1858. crave

  1859. depth in

  1860. my relationship

  1861. with him,

  1862. and I

  1863. do want

  1864. to be

  1865. transformed

  1866. by him,

  1867. and changed

  1868. by him.

  1869. And this

  1870. wonderful

  1871. chapter in

  1872. the Bible

  1873. assures us

  1874. that that

  1875. really is

  1876. possible

  1877. this morning.

  1878. And that

  1879. the risen

  1880. Lord Jesus

  1881. is up

  1882. for it.

  1883. And Luke

  1884. says,

  1885. then their

  1886. eyes were

  1887. opened,

  1888. and they

  1889. recognised

  1890. him.

  1891. And I'm

  1892. going to

  1893. pray the

  1894. same will

  1895. be true

  1896. for us.

  1897. Let's

  1898. pray.
