  1. And if you can find Malachi again in your Bibles, that would be really helpful.

  2. There's a bit of a tendency today, I think, for people like us to prefer lighter things rather than heavier things.

  3. We like light stuff, don't we? We like light, entertaining, funny stuff. We like triviality.

  4. But God knows that what we often need is something much more substantial to live.

  5. We need something weightier to take into our minds and hearts.

  6. Heavier words that might be harder to hear, but actually in the long run are much better for us to swallow.

  7. They go deeper down into us.

  8. And the whole book of Malachi gives us a good dose of deep, heavy spiritual medicine.

  9. If you look at verse 1 of Malachi, chapter 1 in your Bibles, you'll see that the book itself has great weight.

    Malachi 1 chapter mention

  10. Malachi is given an oracle from God to speak to Israel.

  11. That word oracle, it can translate as burden.

  12. Malachi is burdened by a message that God gives him to speak to the people.

  13. The message is heavy.

  14. Heavy not in the sense of it being boring or stuffy or too much information, God.

  15. But God speaks seriously and deeply.

  16. So can you imagine this morning what might be the heaviest, weightiest, most sobering words that you can imagine hearing in the presence of God?

  17. Angry words?

  18. Words of rejection, perhaps?

  19. I never knew you.

  20. How does God open this heavy message in verse 2?

  21. What kinds of words does he use?

  22. Just look there.

  23. I have loved you.

  24. Those four words are the message that he gives, aren't they?

  25. And unlike what we might think of those four words,

  26. we hear them, don't we, in the movies, they're not light words.

  27. These words, rather than turning you all gooey

  28. and making Christianity a fluffy thing,

  29. they're not an invitation for us to relax spiritually.

  30. They are words that are very troubling.

  31. They're spoken to weigh on you heavily this morning.

  32. Israel, my people, you church people,

  33. hear and feel the weight of these words.

  34. I have loved you,

  35. says the Lord.

  36. So why does God choose to begin this heavy message of Malachi with these words?

  37. Seems unexpected, doesn't it?

  38. Well, first of all, God's love

  39. is convicting.

  40. God's love is convicting.

  41. I don't blame you if it took a little bit longer

  42. to thumb through your Bibles and find the book of Malachi.

  43. It's just over two pages long, isn't it?

  44. It's not easy to find.

  45. A Scottish friend of mine used to say

  46. that Malachi, it's wee,

  47. but it's weighty.

  48. One commentator calls it

  49. a devastating little book.

  50. We're going to work through it

  51. over a few Sunday mornings.

  52. Even though it's small,

  53. it's heavy

  54. and it's weighty.

  55. And you might miss that

  56. in the opening few verses

  57. that we're going to look at this morning.

  58. You could read the opening verses of Malachi

  59. and think that he is the softies prophet.

  60. What a great collection of calendar verses they are,

  61. aren't they,

  62. in verse 1 to 5.

  63. God says,

  64. I love you.

  65. Sounds lovely, doesn't it?

  66. But you might have sensed

  67. that as we read on in the chapter earlier on,

  68. things are not well

  69. between God and his people.

  70. This is not God

  71. putting his arm around his people

  72. and whispering sweet nothings in her ear.

  73. No, the whole book of Malachi

  74. is actually more like a row

  75. between God and his people.

  76. It's full of accusations,

  77. accusations and excuses from the people.

  78. And the loving, faithful God

  79. confronts his unfaithful people.

  80. Because the relationship at this point

  81. has gone sour.

  82. God wants them to come back to him.

  83. Just a bit of context,

  84. it's about 450 years

  85. before Jesus Christ

  86. appears on the scene.

  87. And Malachi is speaking here

  88. to a group of people

  89. who are left behind,

  90. the remnants of God's people

  91. who've returned from captivity in Babylon.

  92. Babylon, they were sent into exile.

  93. And then Babylon is invaded by Persia

  94. and the Persian emperor Cyrus

  95. sends them back

  96. to the land of Judah.

  97. It's just after the time of Ezra

  98. and Nehemiah

  99. when they rebuild the walls.

  100. It's after the rebuilding project

  101. led by the prophets Haggai and Zechariah.

  102. Zechariah.

  103. And the people there

  104. back in the little land of Judah,

  105. the temple's rebuilt.

  106. It's not as it was

  107. in the days of Solomon,

  108. but there is a temple there.

  109. And there's a period of relative peace.

  110. But spiritually,

  111. things are dry.

  112. Worship, we will see

  113. as we go through the book,

  114. is there,

  115. but it's formulaic

  116. and it's hypocritical.

  117. And so as Malachi

  118. speaks those words from God,

  119. he isn't relaxed.

  120. He isn't preaching about God's love

  121. with a smile on his face.

  122. These words come not immediately

  123. as a comfort,

  124. but as a convicting message.

  125. And they lie heavily on his heart.

  126. It is not a mushy love.

  127. It is a covenant commitment

  128. that God has placed on his people

  129. like a marriage

  130. or between two allied kings.

  131. So just imagine the scenario.

  132. In a room,

  133. in a house,

  134. maybe in the kitchen,

  135. there is a husband

  136. whose wife was out last night

  137. and she didn't come home.

  138. And it turns out

  139. she's been unfaithful.

  140. And the two of them

  141. meet for a kind of face-off.

  142. And you can cut the tension

  143. with a knife

  144. and she stares at the floor

  145. and he looks at her

  146. and he has every right

  147. to lay into her

  148. about what happened.

  149. But the conversation begins

  150. with him saying,

  151. I have loved you.

  152. And those words

  153. bring a moment

  154. of introspection,

  155. don't they?

  156. They gently

  157. shame her.

  158. Later on in the book,

  159. God is going to rebuke

  160. his people quite harshly.

  161. But his most

  162. shaming indictment

  163. actually

  164. on their cold hearts

  165. is his

  166. warm love

  167. for them.

  168. God's love,

  169. we love hearing about it,

  170. don't we?

  171. It cheers us

  172. and it encourages us

  173. and it should

  174. as we know

  175. that his steadfast love

  176. endures forever

  177. for his people

  178. but his love

  179. is troubling.

  180. It is very serious.

  181. It is a love

  182. that cuts

  183. into our hearts

  184. as we come to terms

  185. with our feelings

  186. for God.

  187. that we have not

  188. loved the God

  189. who has loved us

  190. so.

  191. When we turn from him

  192. in different ways

  193. and we do that,

  194. don't we?

  195. If we love something else

  196. or if we spend a moment

  197. maybe backsliding even

  198. and living in a different way

  199. than what we should,

  200. we pretend

  201. to do,

  202. we pretend we can do that

  203. because we think

  204. God does not love us.

  205. We pretend

  206. that he's an abusive,

  207. nasty,

  208. hateful God

  209. and so it's okay

  210. to turn from him.

  211. But we've hated him

  212. in his love.

  213. To be baptised,

  214. to be a member

  215. of this church

  216. or any church,

  217. Christian church,

  218. to be a Christian

  219. is to be wonderfully

  220. marked

  221. by God's love.

  222. But that is a serious

  223. and weighty thing.

  224. The water

  225. that was used

  226. to baptise Zayn,

  227. that is very heavy

  228. water.

  229. It marks Zayn out

  230. as being loved

  231. by God.

  232. It is heavy

  233. and serious.

  234. To have his covenant

  235. love set on you,

  236. it is a heavy thing.

  237. And if that has happened

  238. to you,

  239. you cannot ignore that,

  240. you cannot pretend

  241. that that's not the case.

  242. Who is the man

  243. who is offended

  244. when a woman

  245. sleeps with another man?

  246. Well,

  247. all of us should be,

  248. shouldn't we?

  249. All of us should be

  250. offended by that.

  251. But of course,

  252. it's the husband,

  253. isn't it?

  254. He is the one

  255. who is offended most.

  256. The one who has set

  257. his love on her

  258. is most grieved

  259. by any unfaithfulness

  260. and any unfaithfulness

  261. towards God

  262. from his people

  263. is never just

  264. a casual goodbye.

  265. His true people

  266. cannot simply

  267. walk away from him.

  268. For God,

  269. it instigates

  270. a passion

  271. and holy

  272. jealousy

  273. for his people.

  274. A husband would say,

  275. wouldn't he,

  276. well,

  277. that kind of thing

  278. happens all the time.

  279. It is an awful thing

  280. and it's a regrettable

  281. thing in society

  282. but if my love

  283. did that,

  284. that's a different

  285. thing altogether.

  286. And God's love,

  287. you see,

  288. convicts us

  289. when we

  290. or if we

  291. turn from him.

  292. That is serious

  293. because he has

  294. loved us

  295. and so he cares

  296. what we do

  297. especially.

  298. He cares how we feel

  299. or how we don't feel.

  300. Convicted by his love.

  301. But there is a problem

  302. with that,

  303. isn't there?

  304. Because his love

  305. can only convict us

  306. this morning

  307. if we actually

  308. believe it's true.

  309. His love convicts us

  310. but secondly,

  311. God's love is doubted.

  312. I have loved you,

  313. God says to his people.

  314. But do you believe that?

  315. God loves you.

  316. We teach our children

  317. that, don't we,

  318. in Sunday school.

  319. It's kind of bread and butter

  320. of our faith

  321. that God loves his people.

  322. But do we believe it?

  323. Do we really?

  324. In this row

  325. between God

  326. and the people,

  327. the book of Malachi,

  328. it's marked out

  329. as we'll see

  330. by a series of arguments.

  331. And the first argument

  332. that is between God

  333. and his people

  334. is there in verse 2.

  335. If you look there.

  336. I have loved you,

  337. says the Lord,

  338. but you say,

  339. how have you loved us?

  340. The thing is,

  341. in all of these arguments

  342. in the book of Malachi,

  343. you'll notice that

  344. even though the people

  345. speak back to God,

  346. it's actually God

  347. who says their words,

  348. isn't it?

  349. And he uses the words,

  350. but you say.

  351. That phrase is repeated

  352. throughout the book.

  353. But you say,

  354. but you say.

  355. So God makes a statement

  356. of truth

  357. and he fills in the lines

  358. of the people's response.

  359. They don't have to say

  360. a word actually

  361. because it's obvious

  362. from the way

  363. that they live.

  364. He's giving the response

  365. that maybe the people

  366. won't articulate

  367. themselves out loud.

  368. God says,

  369. I love you,

  370. but I know

  371. what you're thinking.

  372. You don't have to say it.

  373. I will verbalise

  374. your thoughts for you.

  375. Your inner thoughts.

  376. Let's get all of the cards

  377. on the table

  378. about how things

  379. really are in your heart.

  380. Because even though

  381. I love you,

  382. I know,

  383. I know that you

  384. often don't believe that.

  385. He shows us that

  386. behind maybe

  387. the language

  388. that we sometimes use,

  389. especially in church circles,

  390. there can be a deeper

  391. hidden subtext

  392. of what's going on

  393. really in our hearts.

  394. We're not going around

  395. necessarily lying

  396. to each other

  397. consciously,

  398. are we?

  399. But God knows

  400. our true intentions

  401. and the thoughts

  402. of our hearts

  403. at any time.

  404. So it's like

  405. one of those moments

  406. when everyone

  407. is biting their tongues.

  408. Nobody says

  409. what everybody

  410. actually might be thinking

  411. and then somebody

  412. goes and says it.

  413. And God does that.

  414. He says to us,

  415. I want to get real

  416. with you

  417. and I want you

  418. to be real with me.

  419. It's time for some

  420. candid self-examination

  421. because the underlying

  422. issue is that you

  423. doubt so often

  424. what I'm saying here

  425. when I say,

  426. I love you.

  427. I know what you're thinking

  428. because you say

  429. in your heart

  430. how?

  431. How have you loved us,

  432. God?

  433. What have you ever

  434. done for me, God?

  435. you wouldn't dare

  436. say it plainly.

  437. You wouldn't say it

  438. out loud.

  439. So let me say

  440. what you're so often

  441. thinking.

  442. Let me say

  443. how you might be

  444. feeling.

  445. You're thinking

  446. how have you loved

  447. us, God?

  448. And he's right,

  449. isn't he,

  450. so often.

  451. That's why it

  452. takes me ages

  453. to warm up

  454. just to saying

  455. a prayer.

  456. Why reading

  457. the Bible

  458. it seems like

  459. a chore.

  460. How can it

  461. seem like a chore?

  462. When other things

  463. take my affection

  464. away from the Lord,

  465. when I don't feel

  466. warm towards him,

  467. it's because I don't

  468. think that God

  469. loves me.

  470. The fruit of that

  471. forbidden tree,

  472. it's the age-old

  473. problem is that,

  474. isn't it,

  475. that it just seems

  476. so much better

  477. than what God

  478. is and what he

  479. says and that he's

  480. a killjoy.

  481. For the people

  482. of Malachi's day,

  483. they had a

  484. particular set

  485. of issues,

  486. they had their

  487. own reasons

  488. for thinking

  489. that.

  490. If you were

  491. around about

  492. this time last

  493. year, we looked

  494. through the book

  495. of Haggai,

  496. you can remember,

  497. and in that

  498. prophecy, it's

  499. just around about

  500. the same time

  501. in the life

  502. of the people

  503. of Israel,

  504. there was this

  505. grand vision,

  506. wasn't there,

  507. at the end

  508. of Haggai,

  509. of the rebuilt

  510. temple.

  511. The latter glory

  512. of that house

  513. would outweigh

  514. the former glory.

  515. God would shake

  516. the heavens

  517. and the earth

  518. and all the

  519. nations would

  520. bring their

  521. treasures in

  522. and there will

  523. be this cosmic

  524. shift and this

  525. king Zerubbabel

  526. was the king

  527. named to lead

  528. the revolution

  529. for God's

  530. people.

  531. But that was

  532. about 60 years

  533. ago now.

  534. Zerubbabel is

  535. dead, Judah is

  536. now surrounded

  537. by enemies,

  538. and they're only

  539. there under

  540. permission by the

  541. Persian emperor

  542. Cyrus.

  543. The temple is

  544. there, but it's

  545. just okay.

  546. It's been a

  547. while since the

  548. return from

  549. exile.

  550. A lot has

  551. happened, but

  552. there's still

  553. obviously a lot

  554. more still to

  555. come, isn't

  556. there?

  557. And the

  558. assured realities

  559. of Haggai's

  560. day, of

  561. restoration,

  562. are not the

  563. present realities

  564. yet.

  565. And they

  566. struggle with

  567. the now and

  568. the not yet

  569. of waiting

  570. for God's

  571. promises to

  572. be fully

  573. fulfilled.

  574. And the

  575. question in

  576. their hearts

  577. isn't just

  578. then, how

  579. has God

  580. loved us, or

  581. what has God

  582. ever done for

  583. us, but

  584. rather, how

  585. has God

  586. loved us, what

  587. has he done

  588. for us lately?

  589. How have you

  590. loved me right

  591. now, God?

  592. Because the

  593. assured realities

  594. that you've

  595. promised are

  596. not the present

  597. realities of my

  598. life right now.

  599. the king who

  600. was promised, who

  601. was going to

  602. restore the

  603. glory of the

  604. temple, was

  605. Jesus Christ.

  606. And he came,

  607. didn't he?

  608. And much was

  609. fulfilled, and

  610. we see much of

  611. it fulfilled in

  612. the life of the

  613. church today.

  614. But not

  615. everything is

  616. here yet, is

  617. it?

  618. Not everything

  619. is fulfilled.

  620. Victory over

  621. sin and death,

  622. it is complete

  623. on the cross,

  624. nothing more

  625. needs to be

  626. done by

  627. Jesus.

  628. But we

  629. still sin,

  630. don't we?

  631. And we

  632. still die.

  633. If God

  634. loves us, we

  635. might ask, why

  636. am I still

  637. ill?

  638. Why are the

  639. Christian

  640. funerals?

  641. If God

  642. loves me, why

  643. aren't I

  644. immune from

  645. pain and

  646. from illness

  647. and frustration

  648. in this world?

  649. the cross

  650. and the

  651. resurrection, they

  652. were great

  653. then, but we

  654. might think, well

  655. Lord, what have

  656. you done for me

  657. lately?

  658. Those words at

  659. the end of 1

  660. Corinthians, that

  661. death will lose

  662. its sting, those

  663. words are an

  664. assured reality,

  665. aren't they?

  666. But are they a

  667. present reality?

  668. We still die.

  669. We've been

  670. raised with

  671. Christ.

  672. And when a

  673. person becomes a

  674. Christian, a

  675. new creation,

  676. Paul says, our

  677. life is hidden

  678. with Christ.

  679. Nothing more

  680. needs to be done

  681. to forgive you

  682. or give you new

  683. life in Christ.

  684. But the

  685. outworkings of

  686. all that are

  687. still not fully

  688. known.

  689. We are in the

  690. now and in the

  691. not yet too,

  692. aren't we?

  693. And so his

  694. love convicts,

  695. but we so

  696. often doubt his

  697. love, looking at

  698. our circumstances.

  699. So God says,

  700. let me show

  701. you.

  702. Let me

  703. persuade you

  704. that I do,

  705. that I have

  706. loved you.

  707. And the rest

  708. of our short

  709. section this

  710. morning is that

  711. proof from

  712. verse 3 to

  713. 5.

  714. Look at verse

  715. 3 with me.

  716. How is it

  717. true that I've

  718. loved you?

  719. And here is

  720. the killer

  721. blow.

  722. Is not

  723. Esau

  724. Jacob's

  725. brother.

  726. And we're

  727. thinking, how

  728. is that

  729. supposed to

  730. help?

  731. How does

  732. that convince

  733. us that

  734. you love

  735. us, God?

  736. That God's

  737. love is true,

  738. it's real.

  739. How does that

  740. help?

  741. Well, his love

  742. convicts us and

  743. it is real

  744. because it is

  745. terrifyingly,

  746. wonderfully,

  747. soberingly

  748. exclusive to

  749. us.

  750. It is

  751. exclusive to

  752. us.

  753. That is our

  754. third thing.

  755. Theologians

  756. call Malachi a

  757. post-exilic

  758. minor prophet.

  759. That's just a

  760. posh way of

  761. saying that he's

  762. one of the

  763. smaller prophets

  764. that was written

  765. after the return

  766. from exile.

  767. Now, if you

  768. think about it,

  769. that should be

  770. enough in and

  771. of itself,

  772. shouldn't it,

  773. to convince the

  774. people of his

  775. love.

  776. In case you

  777. forgot, God

  778. says, I

  779. promised that

  780. if you left

  781. me, this would

  782. happen, that

  783. you'd be invaded

  784. by foreign

  785. powers, that

  786. you'd be taken

  787. off to a

  788. foreign land.

  789. I promised

  790. that as early

  791. as Deuteronomy

  792. in the time of

  793. Moses, and I

  794. warned you again

  795. and again that

  796. it would happen.

  797. And it did

  798. happen, and the

  799. very fact that

  800. you're back in

  801. your homeland

  802. should say a

  803. lot, that I

  804. haven't left

  805. you, and I'm

  806. still committed

  807. to you.

  808. He could go

  809. down that route,

  810. couldn't he?

  811. to convince

  812. them that he

  813. loved them.

  814. But what God

  815. does is more

  816. challenging here.

  817. He actually

  818. addresses the

  819. modern preacher's

  820. least favourite

  821. subject, it's

  822. election.

  823. It's God's

  824. choice of a

  825. particular people

  826. for salvation,

  827. and his

  828. rejection of

  829. everybody else.

  830. love.

  831. It's the very

  832. unpopular

  833. teaching that

  834. God's love

  835. is exclusive

  836. to a certain

  837. people.

  838. And God

  839. uses that

  840. as his big

  841. argument here.

  842. He preaches

  843. election to

  844. his people.

  845. Do you

  846. remember, he

  847. says, how all

  848. of this started?

  849. There was this

  850. man called

  851. Jacob, do you

  852. remember?

  853. You know the

  854. story in

  855. Genesis.

  856. Jacob was

  857. given the

  858. name Israel.

  859. He became

  860. the father of

  861. my chosen

  862. people.

  863. He was the

  864. man that I

  865. chose.

  866. And you're

  867. related to

  868. him.

  869. You're here

  870. because of

  871. him.

  872. But don't you

  873. remember that he

  874. also had a

  875. brother, Esau.

  876. And not only

  877. were they

  878. brothers, they

  879. were twins.

  880. There was

  881. nothing to

  882. separate them.

  883. If you read

  884. the stories of

  885. Jacob and

  886. Esau, you can

  887. see that they

  888. were both

  889. rotten scoundrels.

  890. Jacob was that

  891. scheming,

  892. conniving con

  893. man who

  894. posed as the

  895. heir, that

  896. conniving

  897. tow rag.

  898. And Esau

  899. was just as

  900. bad.

  901. He gave up

  902. his birthright

  903. for a bowl

  904. of stew.

  905. They were

  906. both as bad

  907. as each

  908. other.

  909. But God

  910. says, I

  911. chose one of

  912. them.

  913. I chose

  914. Jacob.

  915. I decided

  916. that my

  917. love was

  918. going to be

  919. exclusive to

  920. one of them

  921. and not to

  922. the other.

  923. I loved

  924. Jacob and

  925. I hated

  926. Esau.

  927. And the

  928. story of

  929. Esau and

  930. Jacob perfectly

  931. shows us that

  932. it wasn't that

  933. one of them

  934. was better

  935. than the

  936. other, that

  937. they both

  938. had equally

  939. little claim

  940. on God's

  941. love.

  942. his point

  943. is that

  944. the love

  945. I've shown

  946. to you,

  947. I've shown

  948. to you

  949. exclusively,

  950. my people,

  951. and others

  952. who were

  953. just as

  954. good as

  955. you,

  956. I've

  957. passed by.

  958. Others

  959. equally

  960. deserving

  961. as you

  962. to be in

  963. this church

  964. now,

  965. I've

  966. rejected.

  967. love.

  968. That is

  969. heavy.

  970. That is

  971. heavy love.

  972. That is

  973. serious.

  974. It's

  975. deep and

  976. sobering love,

  977. isn't it,

  978. when you think

  979. about it.

  980. When we see

  981. that there are

  982. people in this

  983. world, there are

  984. people on your

  985. street, there are

  986. people that you

  987. live next door to,

  988. your next door

  989. neighbours even,

  990. in this town that

  991. are just as nice as

  992. you are,

  993. and as I am,

  994. nicer than you.

  995. And God has

  996. chosen not to love

  997. them in this way,

  998. when he's loved

  999. you.

  1000. I realise that

  1001. talking about

  1002. this, talking

  1003. about election,

  1004. God's choice,

  1005. might be the

  1006. first time that

  1007. you've heard about

  1008. this, and that

  1009. might raise lots of

  1010. questions for you,

  1011. and I'd really

  1012. genuinely be

  1013. delighted in

  1014. chatting about

  1015. that with you

  1016. afterwards.

  1017. I can give some

  1018. time to that if

  1019. you want to ask

  1020. some more

  1021. questions.

  1022. I think it's

  1023. quite interesting

  1024. how Jesus

  1025. himself, the

  1026. master preacher,

  1027. uses the subject

  1028. of God's

  1029. choice in

  1030. evangelism.

  1031. If you read

  1032. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  1033. 11, it's not

  1034. off the table for

  1035. preaching, far

  1036. from it.

  1037. But for the

  1038. moment it's

  1039. important that

  1040. we say that

  1041. Esau and those

  1042. chosen by God

  1043. are never

  1044. rejected against

  1045. their own

  1046. will.

  1047. As people

  1048. live wanting

  1049. no part of

  1050. God as Esau

  1051. did, and

  1052. nothing to do

  1053. with him, God

  1054. merely gives

  1055. them what they

  1056. asked for.

  1057. Esau happily

  1058. gave up his

  1059. right to the

  1060. inheritance for

  1061. a bowl of

  1062. stew.

  1063. And there is

  1064. no one who

  1065. is outside of

  1066. God's love at

  1067. present who

  1068. wishes otherwise.

  1069. The mercy of

  1070. God comes to

  1071. people of his

  1072. choice and it

  1073. gives them

  1074. something that

  1075. they did not

  1076. ask for or

  1077. want.

  1078. God's choice

  1079. and the

  1080. stories of

  1081. Jacob and

  1082. Esau serve

  1083. as the

  1084. first of the

  1085. dominoes of

  1086. God's choice

  1087. throughout history.

  1088. Bible history

  1089. shows us that

  1090. Esau's descendants

  1091. grew and

  1092. developed and

  1093. they took

  1094. ownership of

  1095. the land of

  1096. Eden.

  1097. And so the

  1098. choice and the

  1099. gifts and the

  1100. calling of God

  1101. are irreversible.

  1102. Because we see

  1103. here, don't we,

  1104. in Malachi,

  1105. centuries later,

  1106. Eden remains

  1107. rejected by

  1108. God.

  1109. Ezekiel foretold

  1110. their destruction

  1111. and it's

  1112. happened.

  1113. They've suffered

  1114. under military

  1115. invasion just

  1116. like Judah has,

  1117. just as Israel

  1118. has, but notice

  1119. the difference

  1120. with Edom here.

  1121. Verse 4, if

  1122. Edom says we

  1123. are shattered

  1124. but we will

  1125. rebuild the

  1126. ruins, the

  1127. Lord of hosts

  1128. says they may

  1129. rebuild but I'll

  1130. tear down and

  1131. they'll be called

  1132. the wicked

  1133. country and the

  1134. people with whom

  1135. the Lord is

  1136. angry forever.

  1137. They think we'll

  1138. bounce back,

  1139. the Lord has

  1140. rejected us but

  1141. we'll be okay.

  1142. Notice the

  1143. contrast there,

  1144. the Edomites are

  1145. self-appointed

  1146. saviours, they

  1147. think that they

  1148. can rescue

  1149. themselves, that

  1150. they can build

  1151. themselves up.

  1152. Ironically they

  1153. do what the

  1154. Israelites were

  1155. reluctant to do,

  1156. build up.

  1157. Both Esau and

  1158. Israel have

  1159. endured God's

  1160. judgement in

  1161. history but the

  1162. end goal is

  1163. totally different.

  1164. For Esau and

  1165. Jacob in the

  1166. end.

  1167. For the

  1168. loved Jacob

  1169. judgment will

  1170. end up in

  1171. restoration and

  1172. return.

  1173. And for the

  1174. rejected Edomites

  1175. it will end in

  1176. absolute destruction.

1177. So do you get it

  1178. this morning?

  1179. Do you get what

  1180. we're saying?

  1181. If you're a

  1182. Christian, if you're

  1183. baptised, if you're

  1184. here even this

  1185. morning and you're

  1186. not a Christian,

  1187. you're very

  1188. privileged, can I

  1189. put it as bluntly

  1190. as possible?

  1191. God is saying

  1192. here that receiving

  1193. my love is not

  1194. because you are any

  1195. different in

  1196. yourself to people

  1197. who are heading

  1198. for hell.

  1199. The only thing

  1200. that makes you

  1201. different is that

  1202. I've chosen you.

  1203. love is exclusive

  1204. to you.

  1205. And as you see

  1206. the final destruction

  1207. of Edom, you

  1208. will see how

  1209. differently I have

  1210. treated you in

  1211. comparison.

  1212. I have loved you

  1213. in a way that I

  1214. have not loved

  1215. others.

  1216. Paul says to the

  1217. Ephesians, he

  1218. chose us in

  1219. him, that's in

  1220. Christ, before the

  1221. foundation of the

  1222. world, that we

  1223. should be holy and

  1224. blameless before

  1225. him.

  1226. In love he

  1227. predestined us

  1228. for adoption to

  1229. himself as sons

  1230. through Jesus

  1231. Christ.

  1232. Now notice how

  1233. Paul does not

  1234. say there, he

  1235. chose us because we

  1236. were holy and

  1237. blameless.

  1238. No, he chose us

  1239. that we should be

  1240. holy and blameless.

  1241. We were no

  1242. different.

  1243. C.S. Lewis writes

  1244. in his book The

  1245. Four Loves,

  1246. depth beneath

  1247. depth and

  1248. subtlety within

  1249. subtlety, there

  1250. remains some

  1251. lingering idea of

  1252. our own, our

  1253. very own

  1254. attractiveness.

  1255. It is easy to

  1256. acknowledge, but

  1257. almost impossible to

  1258. realize for

  1259. long.

  1260. That we are

  1261. mirrors whose

  1262. brightness, if we

  1263. are bright, is

  1264. wholly derived

  1265. from the sun that

  1266. shines upon us.

  1267. Another

  1268. commentator

  1269. writes, he

  1270. loves us not

  1271. because of what

  1272. we are, but

  1273. because of what

  1274. he is.

  1275. The light may

  1276. shine from you

  1277. this morning, if

  1278. you are amongst

  1279. God's people, but

  1280. it is only a

  1281. reflection of the

  1282. light that has

  1283. shone on you

  1284. from God.

  1285. Simply the fact

  1286. of being here

  1287. and of being a

  1288. Christian, of being

  1289. baptised, is a

  1290. weighty thing.

  1291. That you, my

  1292. people, have

  1293. received my love

  1294. in Christ, and

  1295. that I have chosen

1296. you, and it is a

  1297. privilege, it is a

  1298. serious thing.

  1299. Convicts us,

  1300. doesn't it?

  1301. I have loved you

  1302. exclusively.

  1303. If you have been

  1304. raised in a

  1305. Christian home, if

  1306. you have got any

  1307. interest in God, it

  1308. is not because you

  1309. are nicer, or

  1310. better, or more

  1311. moral.

  1312. So this love is

  1313. quite devastating,

  1314. isn't it?

  1315. It is weighty.

  1316. This week, if

  1317. your love is

  1318. cold towards God,

  1319. perhaps if you're

  1320. beginning to move

  1321. away from God in

  1322. your communion with

  1323. him, please

  1324. remember these

  1325. words.

  1326. If you're coming

  1327. to terms with

  1328. any lack of

  1329. faith, or any

  1330. lack of love, or

  1331. zeal, remember

  1332. these words.

  1333. any impatience

  1334. that you might

  1335. have with the

  1336. assured realities

  1337. not being the

  1338. present realities

  1339. in your life,

  1340. remember these

  1341. words.

  1342. I have loved

  1343. you.

  1344. I have loved

  1345. you.

  1346. It's only the

  1347. start of the

  1348. conversation, isn't

  1349. it, in the

  1350. kitchen, in

  1351. Malachi, but that

  1352. is how God

  1353. begins, with

  1354. those convicting
