  1. Thank you, Peter. If you were here last week, you'll know that we're starting a new series.

  2. We've just started a new series, looking at how the Apostle John paints a picture of genuine Christian faith,

  3. of belief in Jesus Christ throughout his gospel.

  4. And today the message is pretty simple, really. It's pretty straightforward.

  5. It is that true believing is receiving Jesus Christ.

  6. True believing is receiving Jesus Christ.

  7. The section that we've just heard from John's gospel is what's known as the prologue.

  8. It's the opening section of the book.

  9. And the climax of the prologue is actually in the middle, in verses 12 and 13.

  10. Look at verse 12.

  11. To all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.

  12. Do you see what John does there? He parallels, doesn't he, belief in Jesus with receiving Jesus.

  13. This belief is like a homecoming scene, isn't it, if you can imagine it.

  14. It's like a reunion scene. Maybe a close member of the family has gone away for a while.

  15. And suddenly they reappear at the front door.

  16. And there they are, and they come in.

  17. And someone puts the kettle on, and there's a banner in the dining room,

  18. Welcome Home.

  19. When Jesus comes knocking, when he comes to you,

  20. it is not just seeing him through the letterbox and knowing who he is.

  21. This believing is receiving Jesus.

  22. It is opening up the door and receiving him into every place of your life,

  23. into every room of the house.

  24. And you'd use the word receiving to talk about hospitality, actually.

  25. Believing is to receive Jesus as an honoured guest in your life.

  26. Picture the scene of this homecoming, John says.

  27. He says it all starts with the arrival of the guest, doesn't it?

  28. It starts with the arrival, verse 9.

  29. The true light comes into the world.

  30. The true light comes into the world.

  31. You know, the Bible's idea of true belief,

  32. belief of Christian faith,

  33. always starts in the same way.

  34. It always starts when God appears.

  35. When God comes and visits people.

  36. Whether it's Adam, or Abraham,

  37. or Moses, or Samuel, or the prophets,

  38. or Mary and Joseph.

  39. Belief does not start when we travel our way to God

  40. with our thoughts,

  41. and our meditations,

  42. and our religion,

  43. and our imaginations.

  44. But God travels to us

  45. and visits us.

  46. Belief in Jesus starts in this way,

  47. with a move of God

  48. into the world.

  49. John uses another way to describe Jesus,

  50. doesn't he?

  51. He calls him the true light.

  52. This light, he says,

  53. was coming into the world.

  54. He was in the world,

  55. verse 10.

  56. John tells us, doesn't he,

  57. earlier in this introduction,

  58. that before he makes this journey,

  59. he was in another place.

  60. He was with God.

  61. He was God,

  62. in verse 1.

  63. And then he makes this huge leap

  64. from this transcendent place,

  65. out from and above of this world,

  66. if you can imagine such a place,

  67. into this world.

  68. It's as if, isn't it,

  69. humanity lives in a place

  70. that is utterly distinct

  71. from where God is,

  72. in one sense.

  73. It's as if humanity lives

  74. in this kind of box.

  75. And it's a beautifully ornate box.

  76. It's like a treasure box.

  77. And much about the box

  78. that we live in,

  79. in this creation,

  80. tells us

  81. that there is a maker

  82. of the box.

  83. The apostle Paul says

  84. that God's invisible characteristics,

  85. his attributes,

  86. namely,

  87. his eternal power,

  88. his divine nature,

  89. are clearly seen,

  90. they're clearly perceived,

  91. how,

  92. in the things that are made

  93. around us,

  94. in the creation of the world.

  95. Someone asks you,

  96. how do you know God exists?

  97. One answer is to say,

  98. well, look at creation.

  99. Look at the world.

  100. Look at this finely tuned,

  101. beautiful, ornate world

  102. in which we live.

  103. This creation.

  104. The stars above us

  105. speak of the majesty

  106. of their maker.

  107. Just as a piece of artwork

  108. isn't just there

  109. by chance, is it?

  110. It speaks of

  111. there being an artist

  112. behind it.

  113. But for John,

  114. that knowledge,

  115. whilst it's good,

  116. the knowledge that we get

  117. of God inside the box,

  118. isn't enough

  119. for this belief

  120. which leads to life.

  121. God must come

  122. into the box.

  123. The creator

  124. must come into

  125. the creation.

  126. And the little

  127. two-letter word

  128. in verse 10

  129. is really crucial.

  130. That little word there,

  131. in.

  132. He was in

  133. the world.

  134. John doesn't just say,

  135. does he,

  136. that he was near

  137. the world,

  138. or that he hovered

  139. above the world,

  140. or he glanced

  141. the world

  142. and touched

  143. the world.

  144. He doesn't just

  145. pay a quick visit,

  146. make a cameo appearance,

  147. and then disappear.

  148. No,

  149. he was in it.

  150. He was amongst it.

  151. In Jesus,

  152. the sun

  153. that warms us

  154. today,

  155. is the same sun

  156. that warmed

  157. God's face.

  158. He breathed

  159. the same air

  160. that we breathe.

  161. His appearing

  162. is an involvement

  163. in the world,

  164. and he comes

  165. to us

  166. in such a way

  167. so that he

  168. is accessible

  169. to us.

  170. He doesn't come

  171. merely as a vision,

  172. or as a messenger.

  173. He,

  174. himself,

  175. the message,

  176. comes into the world.

  177. So that every

  178. human being

  179. can come

  180. within reach

  181. of him.

  182. Not some third party,

  183. not merely

  184. a prophet of God,

  185. but God himself.

  186. He comes right

  187. to the front door

  188. of the world

  189. so that we

  190. can believe.

  191. he comes

  192. knocking.

  193. Life-saving

  194. belief,

  195. Christian faith,

  196. happens when

  197. God comes

  198. into the box

  199. in the arrival.

  200. The light

  201. comes into

  202. the world.

  203. But then,

  204. reading along

  205. with John

  206. in this

  207. reunion scene,

  208. the light

  209. comes into

  210. the world,

  211. but then

  212. there's a

  213. cold reception,

  214. isn't there?

  215. Because,

  216. secondly,

  217. the world

  218. is blind

  219. to the light.

  220. The world

  221. is blind

  222. to the light.

  223. The story

  224. goes of

  225. some tourists,

  226. and the story

  227. is just better

  228. when you know

  229. that they were

  230. American tourists.

  231. No offence

  232. if you're American,

  233. but you'll get

  234. why it's important.

  235. These American

  236. tourists,

  237. they were on a

  238. trip round

  239. the British Isles,

  240. and they spent

  241. a bit of time

  242. in the grounds

  243. of Balmoral Castle,

  244. the Queen's

  245. holiday home

  246. in Scotland.

  247. And they were

  248. walking around

  249. hoping to catch

  250. a glimpse of her.

  251. On that

  252. particular day,

  253. Her Majesty

  254. had gone

  255. for a walk

  256. dressed in

  257. tweeds

  258. and a headscarf,

  259. and unwittingly

  260. these tourists

  261. met her

  262. on the road

  263. and asked,

  264. do you live

  265. round here?

  266. Imagine the

  267. conversation

  268. with Balmoral

  269. Castle

  270. as the backdrop.

  271. She kind of

  272. played along

  273. with it and

  274. said,

  275. well,

  276. I've got a

  277. house nearby.

  278. They asked her,

  279. have you ever

  280. met the Queen?

  281. And she points

  282. to her bodyguard

  283. and says,

  284. well,

  285. no,

  286. but he has.

  287. It's a weird

  288. moment where

  289. the one they

  290. were looking

  291. for was hidden

  292. from their

  293. eyes.

  294. They didn't

  295. recognise the

  296. one who was

  297. right in front

  298. of them.

  299. They were kept

  300. from seeing her.

  301. Now,

  302. that's a silly

  303. story,

  304. isn't it?

  305. But it illustrates

  306. something of what

  307. is going on in

  308. verse 10.

  309. He was in

  310. the world,

  311. and the world

  312. was made

  313. through him,

  314. yet the world

  315. did not

  316. know him.

  317. The light

  318. comes into

  319. the world

  320. in the most

  321. accessible way

  322. possible.

  323. He comes as

  324. a human being,

  325. two human

  326. beings,

  327. yet in some

  328. mysterious way

  329. the world

  330. does not know

  331. him.

  332. And it's an

  333. absolute mystery

  334. for John.

  335. It's unfathomable

  336. how you can't

  337. recognise royalty

  338. when they're

  339. right in front

  340. of you.

  341. He says,

  342. even though,

  343. even though the

  344. world was made

  345. through him,

  346. the world

  347. doesn't know

  348. him.

  349. The world

  350. is strangely

  351. unable to

  352. recognise its

  353. maker.

  354. It is blind

  355. to his

  356. light.

  357. For John,

  358. this is an

  359. enigma

  360. wrapped in a

  361. riddle.

  362. He just

  363. doesn't get

  364. this.

  365. That human

  366. beings do

  367. not recognise

  368. Jesus for

  369. who he is,

  370. as the God

  371. of the

  372. universe,

  373. as the God

  374. who made

  375. them.

  376. Now we

  377. think that's

  378. pretty normal,

  379. don't we?

  380. Thousands and

  381. thousands of

  382. people don't

  383. believe that.

  384. They don't

  385. believe that

  386. Jesus is

  387. God.

  388. They don't

  389. believe that

  390. he is the

  391. one that they

  392. need to

  393. receive and

  394. receive life

  395. from.

  396. That is

  397. pretty normal.

  398. all.

  399. But John

  400. is saying

  401. here,

  402. no, no,

  403. that is

  404. really weird.

  405. It is

  406. warped.

  407. It is

  408. deeply

  409. worrying

  410. that the

  411. world does

  412. not recognise

  413. this.

  414. That the

  415. world does

  416. not know

  417. what it

  418. should know

  419. of Jesus.

  420. Just as

  421. the Syrian

  422. war broke

  423. out,

  424. you hear

  425. stories,

  426. don't you,

  427. of families

  428. separated in

  429. the refugee

  430. crisis.

  431. Awful.

  432. And just

  433. recently,

  434. there have

  435. been more

  436. stories of

  437. reunifications

  438. of families

  439. that were

  440. split apart.

  441. I watched

  442. one clip

  443. of a video

  444. of two

  445. children

  446. being reunited

  447. with their

  448. mother and

  449. father.

  450. And you'd

  451. expect,

  452. wouldn't you,

  453. for it to

  454. be a moment

  455. of joy

  456. and of

  457. relief.

  458. But

  459. something is

  460. deeply wrong

  461. as they

  462. meet together.

  463. Because

  464. after the

  465. arrival of

  466. the parents

  467. in the

  468. airport

  469. foyer,

  470. the child

  471. does not

  472. recognise

  473. his own

  474. parents.

  475. The father

  476. comes to

  477. embrace the

  478. child,

  479. but the

  480. child turns

  481. away.

  482. I don't

  483. know you.

  484. As a

  485. parent,

  486. it's deeply

  487. disturbing to

  488. watch.

  489. It's quite

  490. upsetting.

  491. when it

  492. should be a

  493. moment of

  494. great relief

  495. for this

  496. confused,

  497. lost child,

  498. but it

  499. is spoilt

  500. by a deep

  501. inability to

  502. recognise.

  503. John is

  504. saying that

  505. happens when

  506. the light of

  507. the world,

  508. the creator,

  509. comes into

  510. the world.

  511. That's where

  512. belief starts,

  513. but the

  514. arrival is not

  515. enough in

  516. itself.

  517. The

  518. appearance of

  519. God in

  520. Jesus Christ

  521. does not

  522. guarantee this

  523. receiving of

  524. him.

  525. You can be

  526. blind to

  527. this light.

  528. You can

  529. shield yourself

  530. from it.

  531. You can

  532. stay in the

  533. dark.

  534. John shows

  535. us that

  536. actually there's

  537. a sinister

  538. side to

  539. this,

  540. because it's

  541. not just a

  542. case of

  543. mistaken

  544. identity.

  545. there is

  546. something

  547. deeply

  548. defiant

  549. about this

  550. blindness.

  551. It is a

  552. willing

  553. blindness.

  554. The world

  555. doesn't know

  556. him and

  557. they don't

  558. receive him.

  559. The maker

  560. comes into

  561. the world

  562. and the

  563. door is

  564. actively

  565. slammed in

  566. his face.

  567. The world

  568. willingly

  569. chooses not

  570. to be able

  571. to receive

  572. him.

  573. Somebody

  574. described it

  575. like this,

  576. the world

  577. is hostile

  578. towards the

  579. protagonist of

  580. creation.

  581. Such a

  582. helpful line.

  583. The world

  584. is hostile

  585. towards the

  586. protagonist of

  587. creation.

  588. The protagonist

  589. is the main

  590. good character

  591. in a story,

  592. isn't it?

  593. It's as if

  594. the world

  595. is hating

  596. the main

  597. good character

  598. of the story

  599. of creation.

  600. If you go

  601. and watch a

  602. film,

  603. if you go

  604. and watch

  605. Lord of the

  606. Rings,

  607. imagine you

  608. get to the

  609. end of it

  610. and the

  611. hobbits

  612. have rescued

  613. the world.

  614. They've done

  615. away with

  616. Sauron and

  617. they are the

  618. heroes.

  619. As the

  620. credits roll

  621. up at the

  622. end of the

  623. last of the

  624. three films,

  625. someone next

  626. to you turns

  627. to you and

  628. says,

  629. you know

  630. what,

  631. I can't

  632. stand that

  633. Frodo.

  634. I just

  635. cannot stand

  636. him.

  637. It's just

  638. weird,

  639. isn't it?

  640. It's like

  641. watching a

  642. film and

  643. then hating

  644. all of the

  645. goodies.

  646. The weirdness

  647. of it is,

  648. the tragedy

  649. of it is,

  650. for John,

  651. he maxes

  652. it out

  653. even more,

  654. doesn't he?

  655. When John

  656. adds in

  657. verse 10,

  658. he came to

  659. his own,

  660. came to

  661. his own

  662. people.

  663. He's referring

  664. there to

  665. God's people,

  666. the Israelites.

  667. See how

  668. deeply the

  669. blindness

  670. goes to

  671. who Jesus

  672. is.

  673. It is so

  674. deep that it

  675. affects even

  676. the people

  677. who are

  678. looking for

  679. him to

  680. arrive.

  681. the whole

  682. of the

  683. Old Testament

  684. has been

  685. leading up

  686. to this

  687. point,

  688. hasn't it?

  689. Where God's

  690. people are

  691. waiting and

  692. waiting for

  693. him to

  694. appear,

  695. but it's

  696. the irony

  697. of rejecting

  698. the one

  699. that you're

  700. waiting for,

  701. of slamming

  702. the door on

  703. the one

  704. that you're

  705. preparing to

  706. receive.

  707. The light

  708. comes into

  709. the world

  710. in the

  711. arrival,

  712. but there's

  713. a cold

  714. reception.

  715. The world

  716. is blind

  717. to the

  718. light.

  719. So thirdly

  720. and lastly,

  721. God must

  722. give new

  723. sight in

  724. a new

  725. birth.

  726. God must

  727. give new

  728. sight in

  729. a new

  730. birth.

  731. John

  732. tells us

  733. that there

  734. is a

  735. general

  736. pattern in

  737. the world.

  738. The world

  739. is kind

  740. of shorthand

  741. for humanity

  742. in John's

  743. Gospel.

  744. Human

  745. beings

  746. universally

  747. are like

  748. this,

  749. he's saying,

  750. a pattern

  751. that when

  752. you boil

  753. it down,

  754. it is

  755. grossly

  756. negative

  757. towards

  758. Jesus

  759. Christ.

  760. Up until

  761. now,

  762. he uses

  763. words to

  764. describe

  765. the world,

  766. doesn't he?

  767. Darkness,

  768. verse 5.

  769. There's this

  770. ignorance,

  771. the world

  772. did not

  773. know him,

  774. verse 10.

  775. There's this

  776. hatred of

  777. Jesus,

  778. the world

  779. did not

  780. receive him.

  781. But then

  782. comes this

  783. ray of

  784. light,

  785. because it

  786. turns out

  787. that there

  788. are some

  789. people who

  790. are marked

  791. out as

  792. ones who

  793. go against

  794. this pattern

  795. of the

  796. world.

  797. Verse 12,

  798. but to

  799. all who

  800. did receive

  801. him,

  802. he gave

  803. the right

  804. to become

  805. children of

  806. God.

  807. There are

  808. some who

  809. do recognize

  810. who Jesus

  811. is,

  812. and who

  813. do open

  814. the door

  815. to him,

  816. and host

  817. him,

  818. if you

  819. like,

  820. and receive

  821. him.

  822. It's

  823. unfathomable,

  824. John says,

  825. that despite

  826. being made

  827. by Jesus,

  828. the world

  829. does not

  830. know him.

  831. But this

  832. is even

  833. more of a

  834. surprise,

  835. that despite

  836. being blind,

  837. some people

  838. do

  839. believe.

  840. that is

  841. a miracle.

  842. Because

  843. true

  844. Christian

  845. belief

  846. has got

  847. nothing to

  848. do with

  849. human

  850. potential.

  851. Actually,

  852. it's got

  853. very little

  854. to do

  855. with you,

  856. and your

  857. family

  858. connections,

  859. and your

  860. ethnicity.

  861. He says,

  862. doesn't he,

  863. those who

  864. received him,

  865. it wasn't

  866. because of

  867. blood,

  868. or the

  869. will of

  870. the flesh,

  871. or the

  872. will of

  873. man.

  874. this

  875. belief,

  876. this

  877. incredible

  878. miracle of

  879. belief,

  880. happens not

  881. because some

  882. people might

  883. fall back on

  884. their better

  885. nature,

  886. or have

  887. more spiritual

  888. potential than

  889. other people,

  890. or they've

  891. got a

  892. religious

  893. gene.

  894. The miracle

  895. happens,

  896. do you see,

  897. at the end

  898. of verse

  899. 13,

  900. because they

  901. are born

  902. of God.

  903. It is when

  904. God causes

  905. something in

  906. them,

  907. it is when

  908. God causes

  909. a deep

  910. change,

  911. it is

  912. like being

  913. born,

  914. he says,

  915. and born

  916. again,

  917. so that

  918. the blind

  919. can recognise

  920. Jesus,

  921. and receive

  922. him,

  923. and trust

  924. in him,

  925. and have

  926. life in

  927. his name.

  928. And without

  929. doing that,

  930. without God

  931. doing that,

  932. Jesus may

  933. even be at

  934. the very

  935. door of

  936. your life,

  937. but actually

  938. you'd rather

  939. he left

  940. his coat

  941. on,

  942. you'd rather

  943. he didn't

  944. get too

  945. comfortable,

  946. you'd rather

  947. he didn't

  948. stay for

  949. too long.

  950. Let me

  951. say that

  952. if you're

  953. here and

  954. you're not

  955. a believer,

  956. you're not

  957. a Christian,

  958. and you

  959. know that,

  960. it's really

  961. good that

  962. you are

  963. here,

  964. we are

  965. delighted

  966. that you

  967. are here,

  968. and if

  969. you wonder

  970. why that

  971. is,

  972. maybe you

  973. kind of look

  974. at others

  975. and you

  976. think,

  977. I wish I

  978. could have

  979. their faith,

  980. something like

  981. that.

  982. John knows

  983. why.

  984. He knows

  985. why you

  986. don't

  987. believe.

  988. It is

  989. because even

  990. despite your

  991. best efforts,

  992. you just

  993. cannot

  994. recognise who

  995. Jesus is

  996. on your

  997. own.

  998. John is

  999. showing us,

  1000. isn't he,

  1001. that this

  1002. whole belief

  1003. thing,

  1004. whilst it

  1005. is a simple

  1006. thing,

  1007. it is actually

  1008. much harder

  1009. than we

  1010. imagined,

  1011. than we

  1012. thought.

  1013. Until you

  1014. are born of

  1015. God,

  1016. it is

  1017. impossible

  1018. to

  1019. believe.

  1020. Yet,

  1021. if you

  1022. were here

  1023. last week,

  1024. John's

  1025. aim at

  1026. the end

  1027. of the

  1028. gospel is

  1029. that we

  1030. may believe,

  1031. isn't it?

  1032. He wants

  1033. us to

  1034. believe.

  1035. He tells

  1036. us we

  1037. can't do

  1038. it,

  1039. and yet

  1040. he wants

  1041. us to

  1042. do it.

  1043. What is

  1044. going on

  1045. there?

  1046. Well,

  1047. that's the

  1048. thing,

  1049. because by

  1050. knowing that

  1051. it is

  1052. something that

  1053. you cannot

  1054. do in

  1055. yourself,

  1056. therein

  1057. lies the

  1058. key of

  1059. doing it.

  1060. We cannot

  1061. fall back

  1062. on something

  1063. within ourselves,

  1064. on our

  1065. better nature.

  1066. All we

  1067. can do is

  1068. see our

  1069. radical blindness

  1070. to who

  1071. Jesus is.

  1072. And just

  1073. as we need

  1074. God to

  1075. intervene and

  1076. come into

  1077. creation,

  1078. to come into

  1079. the box,

  1080. we also need

  1081. him to

  1082. give us

  1083. eyes to

  1084. see who

  1085. he is.

  1086. So true

  1087. belief is

  1088. actually all

  1089. about God,

  1090. isn't it?

  1091. what he

  1092. does,

  1093. what he

  1094. does for

  1095. us.

  1096. And so we

  1097. need to

  1098. pray for

  1099. his help

  1100. with this.

  1101. Let us do

  1102. that now.

  1103. tell you

  1104. a little

  1105. a little

  1106. a little

  1107. a little

  1108. a little

  1109. a little

  1110. a little

  1111. a little

  1112. a little
