  1. I want to speak from Matthew chapter 10, verses 16 to 33, we're going through Matthew's gospel.

    Matthew 10:16–33

  2. ! And if you remember last week, you'll remember that Jesus was speaking to his ambassadors,

  3. ! He was speaking to those who were going to carry his mission to the world.

  4. And we saw, didn't we, that those words were given to the apostles, they were not given directly

  5. to us, but they are given for us. And they were to go to the Jews and speak of the Jews

  6. in Matthew 10. And we learn lots about God's plan and the progress of God, about his priorities

  7. for mission, how God provides for us. And all those things are directed by the gospel.

  8. But verse 16 shows us that Jesus is now looking further ahead. Look at verse 16. He's looking

  9. beyond the immediate concerns of the 12 disciples. And he's looking to that time beyond Pentecost,

  10. when the gospel would kind of go out to all peoples. When they would bring the gospel to

  11. the world, verse 18. It speaks of mission to the Gentiles, whereas verse 6 speaks about

  12. mission to the Jews. And if you look at verses 21 and 22, he's still speaking there, isn't

  13. about the church's mission, about us and our mission to the world. It stretches to today.

  14. This turmoil of parents against children. Of this hatred. And what Jesus is doing this

  15. morning is he is shocking us. He is saying that in the mission of Jesus, which we carry

  16. out, we must expect persecution. And in the light of that, we must be ready to persevere

  17. to the end. So look at verse 16. It's an abiding principle. He says, doesn't he?

  18. Behold, I'm sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and

  19. innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over the courts and flog you in their

  20. synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness

  21. before them and the Gentiles. It's really smart, isn't it? He's saying, to be saved, you've

  22. got to endure to the end. You've got to keep going. It means enduring to the end of the

  23. persecutions. Enduring to the end of our lives as good soldiers of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  24. The Christian life is about keeping going. You fight the fight. You run the race so that

  25. you will receive the crown. And it really is an obvious passage about persecution and perseverance

  26. and endurance. And there will be much hardship in the Christian life and Christian witness.

  27. What he's saying to you is, to live as a Christian, there will be danger and heartbreak. There will

  28. be disappointment and there will be struggle. And that is Christian discipleship. That is what

  29. it is like to be a Christian. And that is such a contrast, isn't it, to what we're often told

  30. by the church today. You know the words like celebration. Words like experience, like worship.

  31. You don't find, do you, on any website that I've gone on this week about churches, on the front

  32. page, persecution, suffering, hatred. But there's no triumphalism with Jesus. There's no naivety

  33. either. He says, beware of people. They are like, verse 16, they are like wolves. That's

  34. pretty blunt. And he says you must therefore have wisdom and realism. You must be wise as

  35. servants, gentler stuff. And it's clear, isn't it, that Jesus is not naive of a

  36. Christian life. It's going to be tough right to the very end. And he says you must be surprised

  37. by that. You must be shocked by that. But why is it going to be so tough? Well the answer

  38. is very clear. And that is that the gospel of Jesus Christ always, always divides. So

  39. do you remember in chapter 9, verse 33, we saw it in the summer, don't we? That after

  40. all these miracles, the crowds, they marvel. We've never seen anything like it, they say.

  41. We rejoice in the faith. But look at the very next verse. Look at verse 34. It's very clear,

  42. isn't it? But the Pharisee said, he casts out demons by the prince of demons. Do you notice

  43. how Matthew does that? He puts, doesn't he, faith and unbelief side by side. The gospel

  44. of Jesus always divides. And the messages of Jesus always divide. So verse 34 is very clear,

  45. isn't it? There is a division. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth.

  46. I've not come to bring peace, but sort of division. Can we reach up a sun? There are, there's stark

  47. words, aren't there? There are two ways, two ways to live. Two gates. Two roads. There's a road

  48. of life and the road of death. And the gospel is always a double-edged sword. It divides men

  49. and women and boys and girls. And that is why it's hard to be a Christian. And the mark of

  50. a false gospel, the mark of a false gospel preacher is that there's no division. The whole church

  51. claims, isn't this wonderful? Isn't this terrific? This is the ministry that we want. And when the

  52. ministry is uniformly popular, that means it's not likely to be the biblical gospel. If the

  53. reaction to the gospel ministry is not the same reaction as what Jesus received, it's not

  54. his message. Some are, on the one hand, will be hungry, they'll desire more, they'll want

  55. more. But others, well there will be those whose hearts are closed. Or closing. And hardening.

  56. And we have to come to terms with that in the Christian life. And it's not easy. From the

  57. perspective of the preacher, it's not easy. It's hard to know if you're being faithful to

  58. the message of Jesus. It's hard to know that if you are, you will always see division.

  59. There will always be a mixed reaction. No matter how good your sermon is, no matter how good

  60. your church is, how faithful it is, Jesus says there will always be a division. But Jesus

  61. tells it as it is. He's not a spin doctor. And he says we must expect hardship and persecution

  62. and struggle, and we must prepare for it, so that we're able to persevere to the end. And

  63. he says we go out as sheep. Sheep in the world's eyes are powerless. We are foolish. We are

  64. weak. Who is here of sending out sheep to convert wolves? It's madness. It's ridiculous in the

  65. world's eyes, but we are not valueless, Jesus is saying. You go out as sacrificial lambs

  66. for my sake. For my sake. That is why you're hated. And you have heavenly power and heavenly

  67. resources the world doesn't see. Just look at verse 19 of chapter 10. When they deliver

  68. over you, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are

  69. to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the spirit of

  70. your father speaking through you. I am with you. And because I will never abandon you,

  71. well you must know that as well. So in this first paragraph, there are three areas where

  72. persecution comes from. Three areas where you and I must expect persecution. The first

  73. area is from the religious establishment. Look at verse 17. The danger is when we read the

  74. gospels, we think of it like westerns. Do you remember westerns where you can always tell

  75. the goodies and the baddies really easily? The baddies had stubble and beards. The goodies

  76. were clean shaven when they, but it's not like that. It's not like that in life in general.

  77. And it's not like that when you come to the gospels. We mustn't think of the Pharisees and

  78. the synagogue leaders as these kind of very obvious bad and evil people. You see they were

  79. the church of the New Testament age. Synagogues and rulers, they are closing their eyes and

  80. hardening their eyes. The church, when Jesus came to it, persecuted him because they were

  81. so adrift from the reality of the grace of God, they couldn't stand it. And so they flogged

  82. the ministers of Jesus Christ and nothing has changed in 2,000 years. And so around the

  83. world, so much of the persecution of true believers in Jesus Christ comes from institutional

  84. churches. Just ask Christians in some of the former Iron Curtain countries where the Orthodox

  85. church in Russia and in Greece persecutes relentlessly the evangelical people. It's the same in our

  86. country. Religion despises evangelical gospel faith. It despises the words of Jesus and the

  87. apostles' words being taken seriously. So save us from these fundamentalists. Let the church

  88. be broad. Let it be very broad as long as it's narrow enough to keep us out. Because that's

  89. the reality. Religion always hates real faith. And it always has done. It always will do.

  90. Because real faith, real faith in Jesus Christ liberates people. That's why, where religion

  91. it always seeks to control and enslave people. And religious leaders always want to make you

  92. dependent upon them. They love to make you enslaved of them. They love to make the institution

  93. the one that is in control. So there will always be persecution from the institutional church.

  94. Secondly, there will be persecution in verse 18 from the state. From governors. From society

  95. at large. That's true, isn't it? Throughout history. The history of the Christian faith. It's

  96. something that is real and alive and has always been a terrible threat to society. Gospel believers.

  97. A society that is militantly anti-Christ. That is why Nero burned those Christians in the first

  98. century. Blamed the burning of Rome on them. Butchered them. That is why the Nazis and the

  99. Soviets rounded Christians up and sent them to gulags and concentration camps. In our Western

  100. secular democracy, it's no different. There's not the same physical violence, is there? But

  101. there is the same vehemence. Just think of the media. How sneering and how scornful they are

  102. of the biblical faith. They laugh Bible-believing Christians. They scorn, don't they? The disdain

  103. of someone like John Humphreys. Or even Ricky Gervais. They love the liberal churchmen who

  104. will tell them everything they want to hear. But when somebody is actually really clear on

  105. stating the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching of the apostles, there will be

  106. nothing but scorn. The third area is, it will be from within the family, verse 21. And maybe

  107. that is most painful of all, isn't it? Think of the hurt and the hostility. The bitterness,

  108. the pain that is in people's families. When a child is converted and they turn to Christ.

  109. And the parent cannot stand the loss. Maybe the loss to their career or to their future.

  110. When a child goes against the pattern of their parents by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  111. what a heartbreak and what a pain that is. Or a husband against a wife.

  112. But Jesus is saying, isn't it? This is genuine Christian discipleship. And this is what will

  113. happen. And when that does happen, when your family turns on you being a Christian, that

  114. is not an evidence of failure. That is the reality of following Jesus. So to sum up, verse

  115. 22, and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. And sometimes that experience is very

  116. real, and we know that. I think as some of you hear it, it is very lonely, isn't it, for

  117. you to bear the name of the Lord Jesus today. Sometimes it seems almost too much to bear.

  118. And Jesus is warning you and I, and encouraging you and I, and saying, do not be deceived. It

  119. is not a sign of failure when that happens. My mission is not out of control when these things

  120. happen. Rather, it's the only way it can be in a world that disdains our Saviour. And

  121. he says, rejoice in it for my sake. It can't be any other way. Do you remember the Beatitudes?

  122. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and slander you on my account. Rejoice.

  123. Why? Well, they persecuted the prophets that went before you. In other words, what does

  124. it show you? It shows you that you are the genuine article of faith when people hate you.

  125. And great is your reward in heaven. In other words, you're not forgotten when these things

  126. happen to you. And God is saying, I've not abandoned you. And he's preparing a reward and he sees it

  127. all. And you've got to realise that is how mission works. Look at verse 80. He says,

  128. and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake to bear witness to them and

  129. the Gentiles. The word there, bear witness, it's the word we get martyr from. That's how

  130. the church grows. Tertullian, in the second century, he was right when he said that the

  131. blood of the martyrs is the seed of the church. And Jesus, you see, is teaching his followers

  132. all of this. That they will be prepared for lives of witness and discipleship and so they'll

  133. be able to endure to the end. It's so much the opposite of what we hear today, isn't

  134. it? So people say to me, do not speak about the negatives of the gospel up front. It'll

  135. put people off. And don't talk about sin and suffering and the demands of Christ, particularly

  136. in the area of sexuality. Don't speak about that on Sundays. Because on Sundays we are visitors.

  137. This is great to have so many visitors here today. And those who are new to the Christian

  138. faith. And we don't want those who come to be put off by the rough stuff. But if you don't

  139. preach it on Sundays, when do you preach it? It's actually deceitful and dishonest, isn't

  140. it, to hide this. And actually, a bigger problem is it's the antithesis of what Jesus does in

  141. this chapter. Because Jesus is brutally and absolutely up front and clear. And you see,

  142. Jesus knows your heart and mind. And he knows, doesn't he, Jesus knows that there are great

  143. weapons in the hand of our enemy. And the great enemy of all Christians in particular. And fear,

  144. fear is a great enemy, isn't it? Fear is a great enemy of Christian mission. Fear can neutralise

  145. mission in our churches and in our lives and in our families even. And wherever fear is

  146. so often the great enemy within, it is something that must be confronted and overcome. And how

  147. Jesus helps you and I to do that is he forces us to face up to the causes of fear, which are

  148. real and they're understandable. But Jesus wants to show you this morning that you should not

  149. allow your thinking to be directed by fear, but by the true gospel. So that we need not

  150. fear and we can endure. And so the second paragraph of verses 24 to 33, Jesus puts his finger on three

  151. specific dangers that our great enemy, fear uses to cripple us. Three times Jesus tells you this

  152. morning, do not be afraid. And each time he gives you the remedy. So the first fear that comes to us

  153. is he brings before us the fear of the terrible sting of slander. The terrible sting of slander.

  154. Slander. And slander, when people speak evil against you, leads to a silencing of the witness of the gospel.

  155. Look at verse 25 and just see how horrible that sting can be.

  156. Here is the religious establishment.

  157. And here is the church of the day.

  158. And they brand Jesus, the Son of God,

  159. the Messiah.

  160. They brand him Beelzebub, the Prince of Demons.

  161. The devil himself.

  162. Here is the clever and the powerful

  163. religious experts of the day.

  164. The theologians. The ones that come on the TV

  165. and are asked to speak on documentaries.

  166. And they sneer at gullible

  167. simpletons who take the Bible seriously.

  168. Who believe things like heaven or hell.

  169. Or two ways.

  170. Or a final judgment.

  171. Or an exclusive way to God through Jesus Christ alone.

  172. They say things,

  173. Well I used to be like that.

  174. But I've grown out of it.

  175. I used to be a word man.

  176. But then I discovered the Spirit.

  177. Don't get me wrong,

  178. I'm very glad of my evangelical roots.

  179. But you have to move on.

  180. It's far more complex.

  181. It's too simplistic to take the Bible seriously.

  182. In fact, people who do that

  183. are quite a danger.

  184. They are fanatically.

  185. So how do you feel

  186. when that kind of slander

  187. is directed at you

  188. and what you believe

  189. and what you cherish most deeply

  190. in your heart?

  191. What you want to do

  192. at that point

  193. is shrivel up, don't you?

  194. And hide.

  195. And to get away from the

  196. horrible, stinging sarcasm.

  197. And it's very easy

  198. for the sting of slander

  199. to silence us.

  200. To silence the gospel.

  201. To silence the truth.

  202. So we basically live

  203. our privatized religion.

  204. And the assault comes on us

  205. from those three directions

  206. that Jesus has already spoken about.

  207. From the religious establishment.

  208. From those who call themselves Christians.

  209. And that particularly stinks, doesn't it?

  210. That particularly stinks

  211. when we feel

  212. that we need to be accepted.

  213. It's particularly hard

  214. for Christian leaders.

  215. I hope you pray for your elders.

  216. We're not immune

  217. from this.

  218. And you must pray for those

  219. who are in far harder places

  220. than we are.

  221. But it is often

  222. a very, very lovely furrow.

  223. When you're looked at

  224. as a kind of narrow,

  225. bigoted, fundamentalist.

  226. They're coming

  227. to family circles,

  228. can't they?

  229. That young teenager

  230. who is converted

  231. and starts to take God seriously

  232. and the family

  233. are desperately worried

  234. about their fanaticism.

  235. That's taken over them.

  236. Parents worried sick

  237. and the real temptation

  238. is there

  239. is you keep quiet.

  240. We know, don't we,

  241. it can happen in society.

  242. In our workplace

  243. or in our school,

  244. in our colleges.

  245. You get the sneers

  246. behind your back

  247. when you won't join

  248. in the humour

  249. of the office

  250. or the classroom.

  251. When you won't

  252. take part

  253. in the going on

  254. and on

  255. and on

  256. about sex

  257. or whatever it is.

  258. I heard this week

  259. about a young teenager

  260. who was at work

  261. and he had his mobile phone

  262. stolen by his colleagues.

  263. And they managed

  264. to get the courage

  265. to get into it.

  266. One message

  267. they found in it

  268. was sent

  269. from a Christian friend.

  270. It was the words

  271. of a psalm

  272. to encourage him.

  273. And they taunted

  274. this teenager

  275. relentlessly

  276. and remorselessly.

  277. What do you think

  278. that does

  279. in a hostile

  280. work environment?

  281. Well I'll tell you

  282. what it does.

  283. You know what it does.

  284. It makes you want

  285. to be silenced

  286. doesn't it

  287. about your faith.

  288. It makes you

  289. want to be quiet

  290. completely

  291. and to make

  292. that horrible

  293. stinging slander

  294. to go away.

  295. And that pressure

  296. is isn't it

  297. very very

  298. very strong

  299. today.

  300. But Jesus

  301. says in verse 26

  302. just look at it

  303. with me

  304. he says

  305. have no

  306. fear of them.

  307. And he gives us

  308. a reason

  309. he says

  310. nothing that is

  311. covered

  312. will not be

  313. revealed.

  314. Nothing is

  315. that is hidden

  316. will not be

  317. made known.

  318. In other words

  319. Hebrews 4.13

  320. says nothing

  321. in all of creation

  322. is hidden

  323. from God's sight.

  324. Everything is

  325. uncovered

  326. but everything

  327. is laid bare

  328. before the eyes

  329. of him

  330. whom we must

  331. give an account

  332. to.

  333. God is true

  334. and in time

  335. the truth

  336. will out.

  337. That is what

  338. Jesus is saying.

  339. There is

  340. a coming

  341. judgment

  342. when everything

  343. will be laid

  344. bare

  345. exactly as it

  346. is

  347. and he will

  348. vindicate his

  349. people

  350. and we can be

  351. sure of that.

  352. And so verse 27

  353. the answer to

  354. slander is not

  355. silence

  356. but what

  357. proclamation.

  358. It is to

  359. proclaim the

  360. truth of God

  361. from the

  362. house troughs

  363. to be

  364. unashamed

  365. to speak.

  366. Don't be

  367. silenced

  368. because God

  369. is true.

  370. Never forget

  371. that.

  372. Proclaim his

  373. truth.

  374. You see the

  375. gospel proclaims

  376. the hidden

  377. things.

  378. Things which

  379. are invisible

  380. to the eyes

  381. of the world

  382. but the day

  383. will come

  384. one day

  385. when these

  386. things will

  387. be declared

  388. openly

  389. and all

  390. the world

  391. will see

  392. it.

  393. And Jesus

  394. says to his

  395. battle

  396. disciples

  397. and believers

  398. he says

  399. live in the

  400. light of

  401. that day.

  402. Keep that

  403. day and all

  404. will be laid

  405. bare on that

  406. day.

  407. Keep that

  408. day at the

  409. most in

  410. your minds

  411. and proclaim

  412. the truth

  413. of God.

  414. Don't be

  415. afraid.

  416. Secondly

  417. our enemy

  418. fear beats

  419. us with the

  420. dread of

  421. violence and

  422. persecution

  423. doesn't

  424. it?

  425. Verse 28

  426. It beats

  427. us with the

  428. dread of

  429. violence and

  430. persecution.

  431. And those

  432. things that

  433. fear and

  434. that dread

  435. can so

  436. easily lead

  437. to paralysis

  438. and compromise.

  439. Verse 28

  440. speaks of

  441. the reality

  442. and the

  443. violence of

  444. martyrdom.

  445. We're not

  446. experiencing that

  447. in this country

  448. at the moment

  449. but we must

  450. never think

  451. that that

  452. has gone

  453. away.

  454. It's affected

  455. every century

  456. of the church.

  457. There were

  458. more martyrs

  459. in the 21st

  460. century than

  461. all the other

  462. centuries put

  463. together.

  464. It's very

  465. likely this

  466. century will

  467. have even

  468. more.

  469. The most

  470. conservative

  471. average says

  472. that there

  473. will be

  474. probably 20

  475. martyrs for

  476. the Christian

  477. faith today.

  478. People are

  479. being relentlessly

  480. persecuted for

  481. the sake of

  482. Jesus Christ.

  483. And who's it

  484. coming from?

  485. It comes from

  486. the establishment

  487. the religious

  488. establishment

  489. and it comes

  490. from families

  491. in many places.

  492. There are

  493. Muslim converts

  494. in this country

  495. who've literally

  496. disappeared.

  497. some have

  498. been physically

  499. beaten and

  500. some have

  501. disappeared.

  502. Some have

  503. been assumed

  504. dead by their

  505. families when

  506. they followed

  507. Christ.

  508. It comes too

  509. doesn't it

  510. from secular

  511. governments in

  512. many parts of

  513. the world.

  514. You look at

  515. Burma.

  516. The systematic

  517. persecution of

  518. the Kaurin

  519. people.

  520. Largely

  521. Christian people

  522. and many

  523. many more.

  524. But in our

  525. western secular

  526. democracy the

  527. hostile is just

  528. as great.

  529. that's what I

  530. want you to

  531. see.

  532. There is no

  533. violence at

  534. the moment

  535. because it's

  536. against the

  537. law.

  538. But if we

  539. teach the

  540. uniqueness of

  541. Christ and

  542. the falsity of

  543. all other ways

  544. to God, if we

  545. teach the truth

  546. of God's moral

  547. law about

  548. sexuality and

  549. other things,

  550. these things will

  551. be turned

  552. against us.

  553. And Jesus

  554. says, expect

  555. it and be

  556. ready for it.

  557. And worse,

  558. verse 28,

  559. he says,

  560. don't be afraid

  561. even if those

  562. have the power

  563. to kill the

  564. body.

  565. Rather fear

  566. God.

  567. Because he's

  568. not only true,

  569. he's great.

  570. And he is the

  571. one who has

  572. power of life

  573. and death.

  574. And that

  575. power is for

  576. eternity.

  577. That fear,

  578. Proverbs 9,

    Proverbs 9:10

  579. verse 10,

  580. says, that

  581. fear of God

  582. is the

  583. beginning of

  584. wisdom.

  585. And Psalm

  586. 34, which

  587. we'll sing

  588. right at the

  589. end of our

  590. service, teaches

  591. us to fear

  592. the Lord,

  593. you his

  594. saints.

  595. For all

  596. those who

  597. fear him

  598. have no

  599. lack.

  600. Fear him,

  601. you saints,

  602. and you will

  603. then have

  604. nothing else

  605. to fear.

  606. And that

  607. God has

  608. you in

  609. his hands

  610. now.

  611. But more

  612. importantly,

  613. more importantly

  614. than that,

  615. verse 3,

  616. 33 makes

  617. absolutely

  618. plain,

  619. doesn't it?

  620. That we

  621. will all be

  622. in his

  623. hands,

  624. all of us,

  625. every single

  626. one of us,

  627. ultimately,

  628. on that

  629. day.

  630. That God

  631. is the

  632. one who

  633. is to be

  634. feared,

  635. not the

  636. one who

  637. can beat

  638. and hurt

  639. our bodies.

  640. So live

  641. in the

  642. light of

  643. that day,

  644. Jesus

  645. says.

  646. And

  647. thirdly,

  648. fear

  649. taunts us

  650. with the

  651. kind of

  652. desolation

  653. of divine

  654. distance.

  655. What does

  656. that mean?

  657. That we

  658. feel God

  659. is far

  660. away.

  661. The

  662. desolation

  663. of divine

  664. distance.

  665. When God

  666. seems to be

  667. so far

  668. away from

  669. us,

  670. that he's

  671. abandoned

  672. us,

  673. and it's

  674. so easy,

  675. isn't it,

  676. easy to

  677. kind of

  678. allow that

  679. to lead

  680. to an

  681. erosion of

  682. confidence

  683. and a

  684. loss of

  685. trust.

  686. And perhaps

  687. this for us

  688. is the most

  689. difficult thing

  690. of all.

  691. Perhaps in

  692. the UK,

  693. this claims

  694. more casualties

  695. than any

  696. other.

  697. When life

  698. is hard,

  699. and when

  700. our prayers

  701. don't seem

  702. to be

  703. answered,

  704. when it

  705. seems like

  706. the heavens

  707. are like

  708. brass,

  709. and God

  710. is dead,

  711. where are

  712. you,

  713. Lord?

  714. Why am I

  715. still suffering

  716. with this?

  717. Why?

  718. I've been

  719. faithful.

  720. Haven't you

  721. prayed that?

  722. Why have you

  723. allowed my

  724. beloved partner

  725. to be taken

  726. from me?

  727. Why am I

  728. still struggling

  729. with this

  730. sin when I

  731. hate it?

  732. Where are

  733. you,

  734. Lord?

  735. Why haven't

  736. I been

  737. healed of

  738. this disease

  739. or this

  740. illness that

  741. dogs me?

  742. Why haven't

  743. I had any

  744. sense of

  745. breakthrough in

  746. the Christian

  747. ministry I'm

  748. involved in?

  749. Where are

  750. you,

  751. Lord?

  752. Have you

  753. gone away?

  754. Are you

  755. distant?

  756. And you

  757. see,

  758. the religious

  759. establishment

  760. and the

  761. world and

  762. our families

  763. very often

  764. join in the

  765. chorus.

  766. Look at

  767. these

  768. pathetic

  769. Bible

  770. people,

  771. so old

  772. fashioned.

  773. They don't

  774. see anything

  775. like the

  776. kind of

  777. church

  778. growth

  779. that we

  780. see.

  781. And God

  782. has left

  783. that kind

  784. of thing.

  785. I remember

  786. when I

  787. had just

  788. come to

  789. this

  790. church

  791. and

  792. somebody

  793. searched

  794. me up

  795. and said

  796. you are

  797. a really

  798. good

  799. preacher

  800. to old

  801. people.

  802. Meaning,

  803. I was

  804. completely

  805. out of

  806. touch,

  807. which may

  808. be.

  809. We live

  810. in a

  811. visual

  812. age,

  813. we live

  814. in a

  815. techno

  816. age,

  817. a church

  818. that is

  819. devoted to

  820. the teaching

  821. of God's

  822. word and

  823. the simple

  824. means of

  825. grace.

  826. It just

  827. won't cut

  828. it anymore.

  829. We've

  830. left all

  831. that behind

  832. today.

  833. You're a

  834. dinosaur.

  835. And God

  836. feels distant.

  837. Or your

  838. family says,

  839. look what you

  840. could have

  841. had.

  842. Look how

  843. you could

  844. live if you

  845. weren't so

  846. fanatical.

  847. How has

  848. God provided

  849. for you?

  850. Where is

  851. he?

  852. Look what you

  853. could have

  854. had.

  855. Where is

  856. your God

  857. when you

  858. can't get

  859. the job?

  860. Why isn't

  861. God provided

  862. your wife

  863. or husband

  864. or family?

  865. And we

  866. say to

  867. ourselves,

  868. Lord,

  869. have you

  870. left us?

  871. Well,

  872. there's

  873. nothing new

  874. to that,

  875. is there?

  876. The

  877. psalmist

  878. says in

  879. Psalm 42,

  880. my tears

  881. have been

  882. my food

  883. day and

  884. night,

  885. while they

  886. continually

  887. say,

  888. where is

  889. your God?

  890. And the

  891. answer is,

  892. says,

  893. Jesus is

  894. not only,

  895. Jesus says

  896. that God

  897. is not only

  898. true,

  899. but that he

  900. is to be

  901. proclaimed,

  902. and not only

  903. that he is

  904. great,

  905. and to be

  906. feared,

  907. but God

  908. is far from

  909. distant and

  910. disinterested in

  911. you.

  912. So he is

  913. near.

  914. So look at

  915. verses 29

  916. and 30.

  917. They are

  918. wonderful

  919. verses,

  920. aren't

  921. they?

  922. it's not

  923. just that

  924. he sees

  925. each sparrow

  926. fall to

  927. the ground,

  928. but actually

  929. a sparrow

  930. cannot fall

  931. to the

  932. ground

  933. without the

  934. God of

  935. heaven and

  936. earth

  937. deciding it

  938. will happen.

  939. Two little

  940. sparrows,

  941. and he

  942. numbers the

  943. very hairs

  944. of your

  945. head.

  946. It's a

  947. picture of

  948. a mother,

  949. isn't it,

  950. with a

  951. little girl

  952. between her

  953. knees,

  954. and she's

  955. gently

  956. combing and

  957. pleating her

  958. hair,

  959. and that

  960. is the

  961. Lord.

  962. Except he's

  963. counting them

  964. to every single

  965. one of them.

  966. He is

  967. near.

  968. He is

  969. near to

  970. you,

  971. and he

  972. loves and

  973. he cares

  974. for every

  975. single one

  976. of his

  977. beloved

  978. children,

  979. and every

  980. hair on

  981. your head.

  982. And therefore

  983. he says

  984. in verse 31,

  985. do not

  986. be afraid,

  987. because you

  988. are more

  989. valued than

  990. many

  991. sparrows.

  992. I love

  993. those words

  994. God speaks

  995. to Moses

  996. at the

  997. burning

  998. bush.

  999. When

  1000. Israel is

  1001. downtrodden,

  1002. and they

  1003. think that

  1004. God has

  1005. abandoned

  1006. them,

  1007. and they're

  1008. groaning

  1009. in slavery,

  1010. and all

  1011. the while

  1012. they're

  1013. unaware that

  1014. God is

  1015. working out

  1016. his great

  1017. plan of

  1018. redemption,

  1019. and God

  1020. says,

  1021. I have

  1022. seen the

  1023. affliction of

  1024. my people,

  1025. and I've

  1026. heard their

  1027. groaning,

  1028. and I've

  1029. come down

  1030. to deliver

  1031. them.

  1032. And maybe

  1033. you feel

  1034. this morning

  1035. that God

  1036. is distant,

  1037. that he's

  1038. got no

  1039. interest in

  1040. you personally.

  1041. And perhaps

  1042. you feel,

  1043. well, why

  1044. should God

  1045. be interested

  1046. in me?

  1047. I'm so

  1048. insignificant.

  1049. And perhaps

  1050. even more,

  1051. you're saying,

  1052. you don't

  1053. know how

  1054. I've let

  1055. him down

  1056. this week,

  1057. and he

  1058. must have

  1059. let me.

  1060. And all

  1061. your confidence

  1062. is sapping,

  1063. and your

  1064. faith is

  1065. teetering,

  1066. and the

  1067. enemy of

  1068. fear has

  1069. gripped inside

  1070. your heart,

  1071. then verse 31

  1072. is especially

  1073. for you,

  1074. isn't it?

  1075. Fear not,

  1076. because you

  1077. are of more

  1078. value than

  1079. many smarrows.

  1080. how do I

  1081. know that?

  1082. How do you

  1083. know that?

  1084. Well, because

  1085. Christ the

  1086. Redeemer came

  1087. down from

  1088. the glory

  1089. of heaven,

  1090. to die on

  1091. the cross

  1092. at Calvary,

  1093. because he

  1094. saw the

  1095. affliction of

  1096. his people,

  1097. and he

  1098. loved his

  1099. people,

  1100. so he

  1101. came.

  1102. And do

  1103. you think

  1104. he will

  1105. ever abandon

  1106. you in

  1107. your Christian

  1108. life,

  1109. having done

  1110. that?

  1111. Never.

  1112. He says,

  1113. to his

  1114. people,

  1115. I am with

  1116. you even

  1117. to the end

  1118. of the age,

  1119. even amid

  1120. all the

  1121. struggles that

  1122. you will

  1123. surely face,

  1124. right to the

  1125. end,

  1126. I am with

  1127. you.

  1128. I am

  1129. not

  1130. distant,

  1131. so take

  1132. heart.

  1133. And if

  1134. they did

  1135. those things

  1136. to you,

  1137. do you know

  1138. why they

  1139. did them

  1140. to you?

  1141. They

  1142. drew them

  1143. to you

  1144. because

  1145. they did

  1146. them to

  1147. me.

  1148. And if

  1149. they hate

  1150. you,

  1151. it's because

  1152. they hated

  1153. me,

  1154. and if

  1155. they persecute

  1156. you,

  1157. it's because

  1158. they persecuted

  1159. me.

  1160. But rejoice,

  1161. because it's

  1162. enough for

  1163. the servant

  1164. to be like

  1165. his master,

  1166. for the

  1167. pupil to be

  1168. like their

  1169. teacher.

  1170. It's for

  1171. me,

  1172. it's for

  1173. my sake.

  1174. It's not

  1175. because I've

  1176. abandoned

  1177. you.

  1178. One of the

  1179. Puritants

  1180. closest to

  1181. the

  1182. captain

  1183. is a

  1184. sure

  1185. target

  1186. for the

  1187. archers.

  1188. And so

  1189. if this

  1190. morning you

  1191. come to

  1192. worship and

  1193. you are

  1194. struggling,

  1195. take heart.

  1196. You live

  1197. life now

  1198. in the

  1199. light of

  1200. that coming

  1201. day,

  1202. that day

  1203. when a

  1204. war shall

  1205. be declared

  1206. and God

  1207. will vindicate

  1208. his people

  1209. and rejoice,

  1210. verse 32.

  1211. So

  1212. everyone who

  1213. acknowledges me

  1214. before men,

  1215. I also will

  1216. acknowledge before

  1217. my father who

  1218. is in

  1219. heaven.

  1220. You count

  1221. the cost.

  1222. And you

  1223. count the

  1224. cost of the

  1225. struggles and

  1226. the hardship

  1227. that there

  1228. will be in

  1229. the Christian

  1230. life.

  1231. Don't be

  1232. naive,

  1233. don't mistake.

  1234. Count the

  1235. cost this

  1236. morning.

  1237. But count it

  1238. in the only

  1239. terms that

  1240. matter,

  1241. that is

  1242. eternity.

  1243. Every

  1244. struggling

  1245. believer that

  1246. is faithful

  1247. to the name

  1248. of Jesus

  1249. Christ,

  1250. and the

  1251. onslaughts,

  1252. and the

  1253. assaults from

  1254. the world,

  1255. and the

  1256. flesh,

  1257. and the

  1258. devil,

  1259. and all its

  1260. forms,

  1261. every single

  1262. Christian

  1263. believer who

  1264. endures the

  1265. end will

  1266. hear the

  1267. Lord Jesus

  1268. Christ proclaim

  1269. their name

  1270. to the

  1271. Father in

  1272. heaven.

  1273. But we

  1274. need to

  1275. finish where

  1276. the passage

  1277. finishes in

  1278. verse 33,

  1279. which is a

  1280. shock.

  1281. Because what

  1282. Jesus wants

  1283. you to do in

  1284. verse 33 is he

  1285. wants you to

  1286. count the

  1287. cost of not

  1288. standing for

  1289. Jesus Christ.

  1290. Count the

  1291. cost of denying

  1292. him,

  1293. denying him

  1294. who loved

  1295. us and

  1296. gave everything

  1297. for us.

  1298. And if you

  1299. are not

  1300. willing to

  1301. stand for

  1302. him, it

  1303. will lead

  1304. to a loss

  1305. that is,

  1306. verse 33,

  1307. unimaginable.

  1308. You see, the

  1309. mission of

  1310. Jesus Christ

  1311. and his

  1312. kingdom claims

  1313. absolutely

  1314. everything.

  1315. Be clear

  1316. about that.

  1317. And

  1318. discipleship

  1319. always will

  1320. be a life of

  1321. struggle and

  1322. persecution.

  1323. It will be a

  1324. life of being

  1325. sheep amongst

  1326. wolves.

  1327. And it will

  1328. be a life of

  1329. persevering, of

  1330. keeping going

  1331. to the end.

  1332. Despite fears

  1333. within, but

  1334. Jesus says,

  1335. don't be

  1336. silenced by

  1337. the sting of

  1338. slander.

  1339. God is

  1340. true.

  1341. And so

  1342. proclaim his

  1343. truth from

  1344. the roof

  1345. jobs.

  1346. Fear not, and

  1347. don't be

  1348. paralysed by

  1349. the threat of

  1350. violence.

  1351. God is

  1352. great.

  1353. Fear him, not

  1354. men and

  1355. women and

  1356. boys and

  1357. girls and

  1358. all they can

  1359. do for you.

  1360. And don't

  1361. ever be

  1362. desolate and

  1363. think that

  1364. God has

  1365. forgotten you,

  1366. or that

  1367. God is

  1368. distant because

  1369. God is

  1370. near and

  1371. every hair

  1372. on your

  1373. head is

  1374. numbered.

  1375. And so

  1376. trust him.

  1377. He sees it

  1378. all and he

  1379. cares.

  1380. And he is

  1381. with you.

  1382. And above

  1383. all, live

  1384. now in

  1385. the light of

  1386. these, well

  1387. these light and

  1388. momentary

  1389. troubles.

  1390. But look at

  1391. them in the

  1392. light of an

  1393. eternal weight

  1394. of glory that

  1395. far outweighs

  1396. them all.

  1397. And so live in

  1398. the light of

  1399. that day.

  1400. And

  1401. everything we

  1402. face today will

  1403. only be a

  1404. cause of

  1405. rejoicing.

  1406. Even though

  1407. that joy will

  1408. be through

  1409. tears and

  1410. pain, it

  1411. will be a

  1412. solid joy and

  1413. a lasting

  1414. treasure that

  1415. only the

  1416. disciples, the

  1417. children of

  1418. Jesus Christ,

  1419. know anything

  1420. about.

  1421. Let's sing

  1422. before we

  1423. come to the

  1424. road stable.
