  1. Well great, we had a week's break didn't we last week from John's Gospel and we're back in John's Gospel and we're trying to work out what is genuine Christian belief that's if you've been here over the last few weeks what is it what isn't it are we doing it are we not doing it and in our passage today we come to another one of John's belief motifs it's there in verse 23 of chapter 2

  2. there we're introduced to a new group John calls them the many doesn't he the many believed in his name when they saw the signs that he was doing it's exciting isn't it we've been set up to look for this kind of thing as we read through John's Gospel and we're told the many believe in him as a result of seeing their miracles the signs that he

  3. does they believe in his name John picks up of the language that he uses in the prologue in in chapter 1 when he's describing what genuine belief is he uses that language doesn't he a belief in his name those who did receive him who believed in his name he gave the right to become children of God it looks like God's family is growing isn't it as the many believe in his name

  4. John's clear isn't it as the many believe in his name John's clear isn't he that they believe they're not pretending to believe they're not saying one thing and doing another they're not being hypocritical so verse 24 comes as a great shock doesn't it it's a very disturbing verse but Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them because he knew all people

  5. Jesus is reluctant to count them as followers of whom he can be sure the impression made on them of his miracles was no guarantee in Jesus's mind of their perseverance and of their genuine faith the kind of belief that he was looking for and the couple of verses at the top of your sheets there are a kind of set up for the famous encounter between Jesus and

  6. Nicodemus in chapter 3 and Nicodemus in chapter 3 John is teeing us up for that and the key message that John wants us to understand as Jesus and Nicodemus meet is that if you want to know what faith is if you want to know what genuine belief is and whether you're doing it and whether you're not doing it humanly speaking to get it right you cannot get it right

  7. why doesn't Jesus sign up for that and why doesn't Jesus sign up for the church on that morning into church membership it is a problem verse 24 Jesus knows about all people they look legit don't they and John adds that little comment it's really interesting in verse 24

  8. Jesus on his part did not interest himself to them as if to say isn't it everyone else thought they were legit we all thought I mean you know John the apostle thought you could have fooled me

  9. we thought they were genuine believers but Jesus singular on his part with his unique knowledge of humanity sees right through them doesn't he and it's a problem of human nature of all people everyone thinks revival has come but God incarnate he's not being insulting to our species here but he thinks hang on a minute for a second here

  10. you are only human it is your fallen human nature verse 25 Jesus knew what was in man John uses the word anthropos that the human person no matter what you look like from the outside Jesus knows what is in on the inside of a fundamental human person and it's an inability to believe properly

  11. and we've got to realize to get belief right we cannot get it right in ourselves I've got two main points really this afternoon our problem we see is two things first of all our natural human attitude towards Jesus our natural human attitude towards Jesus your only human

  12. Nicodemus he comes to Jesus doesn't he and I want to focus in on a few key bits here look at verse two in the second paragraph this man came to Jesus by night and said to him rabbi we know that you're a teacher come from God for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him

  13. now you might think okay that is good isn't it Nicodemus's attitude towards Jesus seems well here he says good things about him he calls him rabbi what a sign of respect that is

  14. God is with you so that you can do these miracles Nicodemus actually puts his finger on some of the things that Jesus will later stress that we must believe about him that he has come from God

  15. Nicodemus gets that right doesn't he his knowledge of Jesus seems right and good but the problem is his deep seated attitude towards Jesus his problem is clear the moment he opens his mouth

  16. what are his first words rabbi we know rabbi we know that you are a teacher come from God notice Nicodemus he comes to the rabbi doesn't he this great teacher but he doesn't come with a question he comes with a statement

  17. he doesn't really ask him a question even to start off with does he he does later but he comes with a statement

  18. Nicodemus's posture in the conversation is one of initial certainty certainty concerning the things that he thinks he knows already about Jesus

  19. so he comes to him doesn't he Jesus your signs are so very convincing

  20. and I've come to tell you that that we now know who you are we know who you are we know who you are we know what you're doing here you're you're a teacher aren't you you're you're you're a good man so good you're here

  21. others thought that he was going to bring about a revolution didn't they others thought that he was just a prophet either way we've got you sussed Jesus

  22. and that carries on today doesn't it people think that maybe he was a social revolutionary

  23. and others think he was a good moral example others a wise sagely teacher others a spiritual mascot others a philosopher

  24. others think he was just a con man or a magician others think he was a trickster but either way whatever you think of him either good or bad

  25. the bottom line is we know who you are Jesus we've got you nailed we've worked you all out all by ourselves

  26. and we just want to let you know that Jesus the point here is not what Nicodemus thinks of him

  27. whether he thinks good things or bad things about Jesus that is kind of irrelevant

  28. the point actually is that he thinks he knows Jesus in the first place

  29. that by himself he's got the know-how that he's got the insight

  30. and we can be like that can't we we've got all the data we've got all the interpretative skills

  31. we've got the intellects and to nail Jesus down to nail the person of Jesus Christ down to make our informed

  32. decisions about him to take him or to leave him to believe him or not we know who he is

  33. and people say don't they your Jesus is clearly not the same as my Jesus

  34. we come to Jesus with a statement of who we know he is

  35. Jesus you are this to me we don't come to him with a question

  36. and Nicodemus is the spokesperson for the human race here isn't he

  37. he represents human certainty based on human deduction of what human beings see in Jesus Christ

  38. he's got a superiority complex hasn't he

  39. but that arrogance actually makes Nicodemus stupid

  40. it makes him ignorant of the things that he should know about Jesus

  41. Jesus says doesn't he later on in this chapter

  42. how can you be the teacher of Israel and not know these things

  43. John shows us here that it's not for lack of information that people don't see Jesus for who he is

  44. or understand what he's come to do

  45. it is fundamentally an attitude problem

  46. it is a posture of certainty in our own inventions of Jesus Christ

  47. that make people stupid as to who he really is

  48. and we all do it don't we

  49. there's a great episode of a TV show

  50. called Undercover Bosses

  51. where an overzealous factory manager

  52. features in the show

  53. and he is so sure that he knows who the new guy

  54. in the forklift truck department is

  55. he's just another lackey

  56. who signed into the company a couple of weeks ago

  57. we as the audience know that he's actually the CEO of the whole company

  58. and he signed on to work undercover

  59. and at one point the manager gets so annoyed with him

  60. without realising it he fires his own boss

  61. the reveal at the end is TV gold

  62. you should watch it

  63. your attitude is that natural pride of having Jesus nailed

  64. isn't it

  65. thinking we know who you are

  66. but Nicodemus

  67. you're only human

  68. you're only human

  69. and I know what's in humans

  70. Jesus says

  71. I know what's in man

  72. and this is what you do

  73. isn't it

  74. with me

  75. you can't believe

  76. because you are blocked

  77. by this natural

  78. fallen human attitude to me

  79. your natural assumptions

  80. and your sense of certainty about me

  81. that's the first thing

  82. secondly

  83. you can't believe

  84. not only because of your natural attitude

  85. but because of your natural human birth

  86. you can't believe

  87. because of your natural human birth

  88. look at verse 3

  89. Jesus answers him

  90. truly truly

  91. I say to you

  92. unless one is born again

  93. he cannot see the kingdom of God

  94. Jesus is saying there isn't he

  95. that true belief

  96. and entry into God's kingdom

  97. is more than natural human deduction

  98. it's more than simply being impressed by Jesus

  99. it's more than the belief

  100. that you are competent to judge who Jesus is

  101. true belief actually is not at all natural

  102. it is entirely supernatural

  103. Jesus describes it as being born

  104. doesn't he

  105. being born again

  106. or above

  107. what's he saying there

  108. let me say that

  109. if you hear that

  110. and you haven't understood it

  111. then you're halfway to understanding it

  112. because what we're talking about here

  113. are deeply mysterious things

  114. in the work of God

  115. we are walking here

  116. right at the bounds of human language

  117. so much so that John

  118. in the original Greek

  119. he has to use a word

  120. that has two meanings

  121. it can mean to be born from above

  122. or to be born again

  123. but if we can simplify it

  124. Jesus shows Nicodemus

  125. that true belief

  126. is about something far deeper

  127. than what you claim to know

  128. and what you judge about Jesus

  129. from your own experience

  130. it is about something far more fundamental

  131. to your identity in the first place

  132. it's not about how you conceive of him

  133. but how you are conceived

  134. what matters in believing in the right way

  135. is having the right birth

  136. Jesus describes two kinds of birth

  137. doesn't he

  138. in verse 6

  139. if you look there

  140. born of the flesh

  141. or born of the spirit

  142. imagine your birth certificate

  143. Jesus looks at your birth certificate

  144. doesn't he

  145. and with all the details on it

  146. and next to your name

  147. he sees only one of two possibilities

  148. flesh birth

  149. or spirit birth

  150. they're Bible words

  151. flesh

  152. it just means

  153. natural human birth

  154. and spirit

  155. is to do with God

  156. isn't it

  157. it's being born by God

  158. conceived by God

  159. in about an hour

  160. if I go down to Buckingham Palace

  161. after this talk

  162. and I speak to the Queen's guards

  163. at the gate

  164. imagine it

  165. and I could tell him

  166. couldn't I

  167. I want to come in

  168. can you let me in

  169. just me

  170. I really want to sit in the royal suite

  171. I want to be a royal

  172. for the rest of my life

  173. can you let me in

  174. I really want a Range Rover

  175. he'd say get lost

  176. wouldn't he

  177. don't waste my time

  178. and I could say

  179. well actually

  180. don't you know who I am

  181. I am a member of the royal family

  182. Lord Robert

  183. this is preposterous

  184. let me in

  185. to the palace

  186. well what would he say

  187. he would say

  188. well show me your birth certificate

  189. then

  190. if you're conceived

  191. by royal people

  192. if it says

  193. royal birth

  194. on your birth certificate

  195. then come in

  196. to the kingdom

  197. but if not

  198. forget it

  199. birth is everything

  200. isn't it

  201. when it comes to royal things

  202. and when it comes to kingdoms

  203. and when it comes to the kingdom of God

  204. it's true

  205. you can do all you like

  206. to try and be royal

  207. but without the right birth

  208. you're not coming in

  209. and the same goes for belief

  210. that is why this passage is here

  211. after the many

  212. believe

  213. it is explaining to us

  214. what is going on here

  215. it's the same

  216. with belief

  217. true belief

  218. is like birth

  219. in one sense

  220. it is something

  221. that you just

  222. cannot do

  223. by yourself

  224. your first birth

  225. you had no part in it

  226. did you

  227. you did nothing

  228. really

  229. you were a shriveled mess

  230. of flailing limbs

  231. you were so vulnerable

  232. you were so weak

  233. and it's the same

  234. with belief

  235. it's like being born

  236. born again

  237. and it must be done

  238. by God

  239. and God alone

  240. you've got to be born

  241. of the spirit

  242. of God

  243. really

  244. the meeting of Nicodemus

  245. is an exposition

  246. of John

    John 1:12–13

  247. chapter 1

  248. verse 12

  249. to 13

  250. do you remember that

  251. John says

  252. to all who did receive him

  253. who believed in his name

  254. there's that language again

  255. he gave the right

  256. to become children of God

  257. and we're thinking

  258. aren't we

  259. well John

  260. clarify what that means

  261. believing in his name

  262. what is that

  263. and he does that

  264. he said

  265. people who believe

  266. in his name

  267. are people who are born

  268. not of blood

  269. nor of the will of flesh

  270. nor of the will of man

  271. but they are born of God

  272. he says

  273. true belief

  274. in his name

  275. is of God

  276. it comes from him

  277. to get it right

  278. we've got to realise

  279. we

  280. can't

  281. get it right

  282. just as to be born

  283. right

  284. we don't

  285. get it right

  286. do we

  287. that's the point

  288. but here's the rub

  289. with it

  290. because it's the very

  291. impossibility

  292. of it for you

  293. to do it

  294. that will actually

  295. lead you to the

  296. possibility of it

  297. once you grasp

  298. that you cannot

  299. do it

  300. you will begin

  301. to do it

  302. as soon as you

  303. start saying

  304. I can't do this

  305. Lord

  306. I need your help

  307. to get into the

  308. kingdom

  309. even to believe

  310. when you think

  311. you can't achieve

  312. perfect belief

  313. actually

  314. you're well

  315. on your way

  316. the kind of

  317. believing Jesus

  318. is looking for

  319. is the kind of

  320. believing that

  321. is only from God

  322. I've spoken on

  323. Nicodemus

  324. on this passage

  325. quite a few times

  326. before

  327. and because he's

  328. religious

  329. that's always

  330. why I've gone to him

  331. he's an easy target

  332. isn't he

  333. to kind of attack

  334. religious people

  335. John tells us

  336. he's the ruler

  337. of the Jews

  338. but what I've

  339. missed actually

  340. until this week

  341. is that

  342. Nicodemus

  343. is put here

  344. not because of

  345. what is unique

  346. to him

  347. as a religious

  348. person

  349. but actually

  350. what is common

  351. to him

  352. as a man

  353. as a human

  354. being

  355. you see

  356. at the end

  357. of chapter 2

  358. verse 25

  359. there

  360. John ends

  361. with the word

  362. man

  363. doesn't he

  364. Jesus knew

  365. what was in

  366. man

  367. and then

  368. in the next

  369. verse of chapter 3

  370. he uses the same

  371. word again

  372. there was a man

  373. of the Pharisees

  374. named Nicodemus

  375. and John

  376. flows them together

  377. if you've got a

  378. title in your

  379. Bibles at home

  380. it might say

  381. something like

  382. you must be

  383. born again

  384. that's not part

  385. of the original

  386. text

  387. get a black

  388. permanent marker

  389. and scrub it out

  390. because the flow

  391. between chapter 2

  392. and 3

  393. is so important

  394. here

  395. John flows

  396. them together

  397. he says

  398. in chapter 2

  399. doesn't he

  400. Jesus knows

  401. what was in

  402. man

  403. so let me

  404. give you an

  405. example of a

  406. man

  407. here is

  408. Nicodemus

  409. and so

  410. by scrubbing

  411. out the little

  412. title in our

  413. Bibles

  414. we see

  415. don't we

  416. that Nicodemus

  417. is just like

  418. all of us

  419. maybe his

  420. religion makes

  421. the point even

  422. more strongly

  423. doesn't it

  424. that after all

  425. all of that

  426. religion

  427. he's still

  428. only human

  429. underneath the

  430. robes and all

  431. the religiosity

  432. he's just one

  433. of the many

  434. he's one like

  435. us

  436. and Jesus

  437. knows what

  438. is naturally

  439. in us

  440. it's wonderful

  441. as you follow

  442. the gospel

  443. how Nicodemus

  444. later

  445. he stands up

  446. for Jesus

  447. doesn't he

  448. in the Sanhedrin

  449. in the court

  450. he arranges

  451. an honourable

  452. burial for

  453. Jesus

  454. I think

  455. Nicodemus

  456. did believe

  457. in the end

  458. and perhaps

  459. this was the

  460. moment wasn't it

  461. in this

  462. conversation with

  463. Jesus where

  464. he stopped

  465. bringing statements

  466. to Jesus

  467. and he started

  468. asking questions

  469. we like him

  470. with this

  471. superiority

  472. complex

  473. we make

  474. ourselves

  475. stupid

  476. before Jesus

  477. and we

  478. kid ourselves

  479. that we

  480. can believe

  481. by pure

  482. human deduction

  483. without God's

  484. help at all

  485. but we get it

  486. right don't we

  487. when we know

  488. we can't

  489. get it right

  490. we're only

  491. human

  492. and we need

  493. to be born

  494. of God

  495. born again

  496. let's pray
