  1. Amen.

  2. I think Paul asked me in passing in the early summer if I would come down and I didn't think he was serious so I think I foolishly said of course.

  3. And then I should have realised one of two things. Either that he'd already asked the people who are really his best friends and he was kind of getting near desperation point.

  4. Or he had this extraordinary Celtic prophetic gift and that he knew the nation would be in political crisis.

  5. And being a Welshman ministering in England with an Irish wife had kind of limited the field of guest preachers for an occasion like this and he thought he would look after the barber.

  6. And I do, it really is a tremendous honour. It's got a minor evangelical knighthood to be asked to be part of this service today.

  7. And I realised earlier on this morning that Paul is actually preaching through Matthew's Gospel.

  8. Thankfully for me he hasn't reached chapter 16 yet and my purpose is not to expound the whole of this passage.

  9. He will do that I'm sure later on in the year.

  10. But to draw your attention to the famous words of Jesus in verse 18.

  11. You are Peter.

  12. Peter has confessed that Jesus is the Christ.

  13. On this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not be able to prevail against it.

  14. Many of us I think have been praying that this weekend and the opening of this building,

  15. which is obviously a decisive point in the history of this church,

  16. will also be in God's providence a turning point in the ministry and fruitfulness of the church's life.

  17. And it's really for that reason that I've chosen this text.

  18. Because it is both a decisive point and a turning point in the Gospel.

  19. It's a decisive point because this is the moment where Peter's eyes are opened by the Lord

  20. and he confesses that Jesus is the Christ.

  21. If Peter ever afterwards were asked to date the turning point in his life,

  22. when he fully came into a confession of Jesus Christ,

  23. having followed him but now confessing him,

  24. undoubtedly this would be the decisive point.

  25. But it's also, as you'd have picked up in the reading,

  26. the turning point in the Gospel.

  27. And so Matthew tells us it was from this time onwards

  28. that Jesus began to emphasize very clearly to the Apostles,

  29. and he does this on a number of successive occasions,

  30. that because he is the Christ,

  31. because he's going to fulfill the ancient prophecies

  32. as the Messiah, as the suffering servant,

  33. as the Savior.

  34. It means he's going to Jerusalem,

  35. he is going to suffer and be crucified,

  36. and on the third day he is going to rise again.

  37. And so this is very much a hinge point

  38. in Peter's experience,

  39. and it's a hinge point in the Gospel story.

  40. It's a decisive point,

  41. and it's a turning point.

  42. And I want us to try and think

  43. about the meaning of what Jesus says to him,

  44. but also the significance of that for us

  45. in our Christian lives,

  46. but also perhaps especially in the story of this church.

  47. And I want you to notice four things with me.

  48. The first is, in some ways,

  49. the most fundamental.

  50. It is that Christ's building of the church

  51. is the absolute focus of his ministry.

  52. The statement he makes has a kind of,

  53. well, it's almost got the ring of a manifesto.

  54. This is his program.

  55. And it, in the synoptic Gospels,

  56. in Matthew here,

  57. it has the ring of one of those

  58. double amen sayings of Jesus.

  59. Everything he says is true,

  60. but there are some things that are,

  61. as it were, centrally true,

  62. that make sense of all the other things

  63. that are true.

  64. And you can sense that

  65. in the way he addresses Peter here.

  66. You are Peter,

  67. on this rock.

  68. Here is my own building program.

  69. I am going to build my church.

  70. Now, most of you know

  71. that one of the strange things about this is

  72. that the word church is mentioned

  73. on only three occasions in the Gospel.

  74. Mentioned here in Matthew 16.

  75. It's mentioned twice in Matthew 18.

  76. And it's often been a conundrum to people.

  77. How can we say that the church

  78. is the epicenter of Christ's ministry program

  79. when he scarcely mentions the church?

  80. The answer, I think, actually is

  81. that it's pretty clear in this passage

  82. that although Simon Peter and the others

  83. confessed him,

  84. they didn't understand him.

  85. And until they understood

  86. who Jesus really was

  87. and what his ministry was,

  88. there was no way under the sun

  89. they would ever understand

  90. what the church really is.

  91. And that's still true, isn't it?

  92. People who don't know

  93. who Christ really is

  94. think of the church

  95. characteristically

  96. in organizational, superficial ways.

  97. And so there's a very clear reason

  98. why it is that

  99. Jesus infrequently mentions,

  100. uses the term church.

  101. But it's very evident

  102. from his parables,

  103. from the fact that he had chosen

  104. these apostles,

  105. from the fact that he was preparing them

  106. for a future ministry,

  107. that all the word occurs infrequently.

  108. The idea is the big idea

  109. in Jesus' mind.

  110. That is to say,

  111. Jesus did not come only

  112. to redeem individuals.

  113. Jesus came to create

  114. a new community altogether.

  115. He came not to save

  116. one and then another,

  117. but his vision was

  118. to bring a glorious restoration

  119. of what had been fragmented

  120. and fractured

  121. and virtually destroyed

  122. in the fall.

  123. And so Jesus comes

  124. and he is going to build

  125. his church.

  126. He is going to create

  127. this new community.

  128. And it's clear

  129. that the apostles

  130. understood this.

  131. Paul, in his letter

  132. to the Ephesians,

  133. again and again

  134. speaks about how

  135. Christ is the,

  136. he's the head of everything,

  137. but he's the head of everything

  138. for the building

  139. of the church.

  140. And he's given gifts

  141. in order that the church

  142. might be built

  143. and churches work properly

  144. and build themselves up

  145. when each part

  146. is functioning

  147. in the power of the Spirit

  148. and the grace

  149. of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  150. And it's evident

  151. that they understood

  152. very clearly

  153. after Jesus' resurrection

  154. and the outpouring

  155. of the Holy Spirit

  156. that what Jesus

  157. always had in view

  158. in his coming

  159. and teaching

  160. and dying,

  161. shedding his blood,

  162. rising,

  163. ascending,

  164. now sending his Spirit,

  165. was to create

  166. this new,

  167. ages long,

  168. worldwide,

  169. multi-ethnic,

  170. new community

  171. that here in Matthew 16, 18

  172. he had described

  173. as the church.

  174. And so right

  175. from the day of Pentecost,

  176. the way in which

  177. the apostles

  178. think about

  179. what is happening

  180. is this,

  181. that the Lord

  182. adds daily

  183. to the church

  184. those who are being saved.

  185. This is a

  186. Christ-created,

  187. spirit-endowed,

  188. divinely planned,

  189. new community.

  190. And that reminds us

  191. in a way

  192. as we read through

  193. the New Testament

  194. that at the end

  195. of the day

  196. it is Jesus' church

  197. that is his

  198. greatest evangelistic

  199. instrument

  200. in the world.

  201. And it is that.

  202. And this is a very

  203. striking thing

  204. in the New Testament,

  205. isn't it?

  206. Very few

  207. instructions

  208. about how

  209. to do evangelism.

  210. Why are there

  211. so few

  212. instructions

  213. about how

  214. to do evangelism?

  215. Because they

  216. understood

  217. that this new

  218. community

  219. that Christ

  220. was creating

  221. that caused

  222. Peter,

  223. you remember,

  224. Peter says this

  225. in his first letter,

  226. people will ask

  227. you

  228. questions

  229. about the

  230. hope

  231. that's in you.

  232. Why would

  233. people ask

  234. them questions

  235. about the hope

  236. that's in them

  237. when people

  238. asked so few

  239. questions

  240. about the

  241. organizational church

  242. about the hope

  243. that's in them?

  244. Because they

  245. had been brought

  246. into this

  247. glorious new

  248. community.

  249. And in many

  250. ways,

  251. in that day

  252. and in our

  253. day,

  254. they lived in

  255. a pre-Christian

  256. era,

  257. we lived

  258. manifestly

  259. in a post-Christian

  260. era.

  261. This was

  262. what struck

  263. people.

  264. The early

  265. chapters of

  266. the Acts

  267. of the Apostles

  268. were told

  269. on the one

  270. hand,

  271. people looked

  272. at the church

  273. and they

  274. thought,

  275. I'd run

  276. rather than

  277. think I

  278. would join

  279. them.

  280. And then you

  281. remember,

  282. in the very

  283. next breath,

  284. Luke is

  285. telling us

  286. that people

  287. were actually

  288. crowding into

  289. the church.

  290. Why was

  291. that?

  292. Because they

  293. saw the

  294. reality of

  295. the presence

  296. of Christ

  297. in the midst

  298. of his

  299. people.

  300. And this

  301. is surely

  302. our prayer

  303. for here,

  304. that strangers

  305. coming in,

  306. as they might

  307. have come into

  308. the church

  309. in Corinth

  310. and sensing,

  311. yes,

  312. an atmosphere,

  313. would find

  314. themselves at

  315. least inwardly

  316. bowing down

  317. and saying,

  318. surely God

  319. is in the

  320. midst of

  321. these people.

  322. And this

  323. is our

  324. experience,

  325. isn't it?

  326. People come

  327. to the funeral

  328. of a believer

  329. and they

  330. find themselves,

  331. for all our

  332. sadness

  333. and loss,

  334. they find

  335. themselves in

  336. a world

  337. they have

  338. never seen,

  339. of people

  340. with joy

  341. in the midst

  342. of sorrow,

  343. with hope

  344. in the midst

  345. of death.

  346. And they

  347. wonder why

  348. it's so

  349. different.

  350. Or they

  351. come in

  352. from their

  353. dysfunctional

  354. families,

  355. which are

  356. in extraordinary

  357. proportions in

  358. our day.

  359. And they

  360. see the

  361. family of

  362. the Lord

  363. Jesus

  364. functioning,

  365. and although

  366. they have

  367. no words to

  368. articulate what

  369. they see and

  370. experience,

  371. they realize,

  372. love it or

  373. hate it,

  374. join it or

  375. seek to

  376. destroy it,

  377. in whatever

  378. sophisticated ways

  379. that this is

  380. how God

  381. meant life

  382. to be.

  383. And there

  384. is a taste

  385. of it in

  386. his church.

  387. And this

  388. is our

  389. Lord Jesus

  390. vision.

  391. And when

  392. you think

  393. of it,

  394. it's an

  395. extraordinary

  396. vision,

  397. not just

  398. because it's

  399. an amazing

  400. thing that

  401. this was

  402. the goal

  403. of his

  404. ministry,

  405. but because

  406. he makes

  407. it very

  408. clear here

  409. and elsewhere

  410. that he

  411. intended to

  412. build his

  413. church with

  414. people,

  415. who were

  416. marked by

  417. tremendous

  418. frailty.

  419. And that's

  420. really, you

  421. know, you

  422. all know

  423. there are

  424. great debates

  425. about this

  426. text, but

  427. this is

  428. really the

  429. point of

  430. this text,

  431. isn't it?

  432. This is

  433. really the

  434. point of

  435. saying,

  436. you are

  437. Peter and

  438. on this

  439. rock I

  440. will build

  441. my church.

  442. This is a

  443. crumbling

  444. rock.

  445. And it

  446. becomes

  447. evident almost

  448. in the next

  449. sentences,

  450. when Jesus

  451. begins to

  452. explain how

  453. he's going

  454. to do it,

  455. Peter takes

  456. hold of

  457. him and

  458. refuses to

  459. take it

  460. in.

  461. It puts

  462. his body

  463. between the

  464. cross and

  465. Jesus.

  466. And even

  467. after Pentecost,

  468. he still

  469. struggles.

  470. The point

  471. here is

  472. that the

  473. Lord Jesus

  474. is going

  475. to use

  476. stones

  477. that have

  478. cracks in

  479. them.

  480. to

  481. work

  482. them

  483. together

  484. in

  485. order

  486. to

  487. build

  488. his

  489. church.

  490. And it's

  491. a message

  492. that runs

  493. through the

  494. whole of

  495. the New

  496. Testament,

  497. isn't it?

  498. From here

  499. right to

  500. the end

  501. of it,

  502. that the

  503. Lord delights

  504. to use

  505. broken,

  506. fragile

  507. people

  508. whom he

  509. is beginning

  510. to mend.

  511. People

  512. with angles

  513. and awkwardnesses

  514. that he's

  515. chiseling away

  516. in order

  517. to bring

  518. them together

  519. so that they

  520. may encourage

  521. one another.

  522. And it's

  523. an amazing

  524. thing when you

  525. think about it,

  526. isn't it?

  527. Whatever Jesus

  528. means when he

  529. says,

  530. you're Peter

  531. and on this

  532. rock I'm going

  533. to build my

  534. church,

  535. there is some

  536. sense in which

  537. Peter was the

  538. key man,

  539. wasn't he?

  540. Every time the

  541. apostles are

  542. listed in the

  543. New Testament,

  544. Peter's the

  545. first one to be

  546. mentioned.

  547. Every time the

  548. three are listed,

  549. Peter's the

  550. first one to

  551. be mentioned.

  552. What's Jesus

  553. talking about

  554. here?

  555. He'll build

  556. his church,

  557. he'll give

  558. him the

  559. keys.

  560. Well,

  561. he's talking

  562. first of all

  563. about that

  564. moment on

  565. the day of

  566. Pentecost

  567. when one

  568. might say

  569. the spirit

  570. whispered to

  571. Simon Peter,

  572. you're the

  573. one with the

  574. keys in your

  575. pocket,

  576. get up and

  577. preach.

  578. And Peter

  579. got up and

  580. the doors of

  581. the kingdom of

  582. heaven were

  583. swung open.

  584. The sins of

  585. thousands,

  586. they experienced

  587. forgiveness.

  588. They were

  589. baptized and

  590. physically,

  591. as it were,

  592. tangibly

  593. experienced this

  594. symbol of the

  595. washing away of

  596. their guilt and

  597. their sins.

  598. And in the

  599. very territory

  600. where they could

  601. point to the

  602. place where

  603. endless thousands

  604. of sacrifices

  605. had been made,

  606. that they knew

  607. could not

  608. really take

  609. away their

  610. sins.

  611. And Peter

  612. flung open

  613. the gates of

  614. the kingdom of

  615. God to them

  616. and later on

  617. in Acts to

  618. the Gentiles.

  619. it is an

  620. amazing thing

  621. that he takes

  622. this proud

  623. man with

  624. so little

  625. emotional

  626. intelligence,

  627. so little

  628. real self-knowledge,

  629. and in a

  630. sense he

  631. walks Peter

  632. through his

  633. being crushed.

  634. Oh,

  635. Peter,

  636. Satan has

  637. desired to

  638. have you,

  639. to sift you

  640. like wheat,

  641. and the

  642. only reason

  643. you'll survive

  644. is because I

  645. have prayed for

  646. you that your

  647. faith will not

  648. fail, and

  649. this is,

  650. I remember

  651. when I was a

  652. teenager reading

  653. this kind of,

  654. I guess it was

  655. meant as a

  656. slightly funny

  657. comment, but

  658. it had its own

  659. penetration of the

  660. angels in heaven

  661. watching this,

  662. and then turning

  663. to the father

  664. and saying,

  665. so what's

  666. plan B?

  667. that this

  668. should be

  669. plan A,

  670. and you can

  671. see why this

  672. happens,

  673. it is so that

  674. none of the

  675. glory will go

  676. to Simon

  677. Peter,

  678. but that all

  679. of the glory

  680. will go to

  681. the Lord

  682. Jesus,

  683. it's what

  684. Paul says

  685. in 2 Corinthians

  686. 4,

  687. isn't it,

  688. that he puts

  689. the treasure

  690. in earthen

  691. vessels,

  692. so that all

  693. the glory

  694. will be the

  695. Lord's,

  696. the joy

  697. will be ours,

  698. the thankfulness

  699. will be ours,

  700. but the glory

  701. will exclusively

  702. be his,

  703. the older

  704. Christians used

  705. to think that

  706. Paul was

  707. referring to

  708. Gideon and

  709. the 300

  710. there,

  711. that you

  712. could defeat

  713. the Midianites,

  714. remember the

  715. Christmas prophecy,

  716. it will be as

  717. in the day of

  718. the Midianites,

  719. that it's these

  720. frail vessels

  721. broken open

  722. and the

  723. light shining

  724. that brings

  725. the victory

  726. and the

  727. triumph

  728. so

  729. marvellously,

  730. this is a,

  731. this is an

  732. amazing statement

  733. Jesus makes

  734. and it's an

  735. encouraging statement

  736. for,

  737. for us,

  738. just look at

  739. you,

  740. look at

  741. you,

  742. the rich and

  743. beautiful people

  744. of Ealing

  745. in the leafy

  746. suburbs of

  747. London,

  748. no we're not,

  749. we're,

  750. we're nobodies,

  751. most of us in

  752. the room are

  753. absolutely nobodies,

  754. people pass us in

  755. the street,

  756. don't give us a

  757. second look,

  758. but Jesus is

  759. building his

  760. church,

  761. through us,

  762. and the gates

  763. of hell,

  764. says Jesus,

  765. will not be able

  766. to prevail

  767. against it,

  768. that's the third

  769. thing I want you

  770. to notice,

  771. Jesus'

  772. church building

  773. lies at the

  774. heart of his

  775. ministry,

  776. it's his

  777. goal,

  778. he's doing

  779. it through

  780. people who

  781. are marked

  782. by great

  783. frailty,

  784. and the

  785. third and

  786. important thing

  787. is,

  788. he's doing

  789. this on

  790. enemy

  791. occupied

  792. territory,

  793. I mean,

  794. what's happened

  795. here in a

  796. sense,

  797. I'm not saying

  798. the sisters

  799. were the

  800. enemy,

  801. but what's

  802. happened here,

  803. land has

  804. been reclaimed,

  805. a new building

  806. has been

  807. built,

  808. and this is

  809. what Jesus

  810. is doing,

  811. he is

  812. reclaiming

  813. territory

  814. from his

  815. enemy,

  816. the gates

  817. of Hades,

  818. he says,

  819. will not be

  820. able to

  821. withstand,

  822. actually,

  823. that's the

  824. same verb

  825. that's used

  826. in the

  827. passion

  828. narrative

  829. about the

  830. people

  831. shouting

  832. for Jesus'

  833. crucifixion,

  834. and their

  835. voices

  836. triumphing,

  837. and Jesus

  838. is saying,

  839. no matter

  840. how many

  841. voices

  842. call for

  843. the destruction

  844. of the

  845. Christian

  846. church,

  847. what are

  848. the people

  849. around here

  850. were saying,

  851. you know,

  852. these poor

  853. people in

  854. that strange

  855. little

  856. Presbyterian

  857. church,

  858. and they've

  859. had to move

  860. out,

  861. and they're

  862. meeting in

  863. all kinds

  864. of places,

  865. that there

  866. is no

  867. chance that

  868. they will

  869. ever be able

  870. to do

  871. anything

  872. here,

  873. that you

  874. see,

  875. Jesus is

  876. building his

  877. church,

  878. and nothing

  879. can prevail

  880. against Jesus

  881. building his

  882. church.

  883. For my

  884. own part,

  885. I think

  886. when Jesus

  887. speaks about

  888. the gates

  889. of Hades,

  890. he's not

  891. just speaking

  892. about darkness

  893. and death,

  894. or even the

  895. place of the

  896. dead,

  897. I think he

  898. uses that

  899. expression,

  900. gates,

  901. because it

  902. has a

  903. certain ring

  904. to it,

  905. the gates

  906. in antiquity,

  907. of a city.

  908. Those were

  909. the places

  910. of authority.

  911. You remember

  912. when Boaz

  913. wanted to

  914. marry Ruth,

  915. where did

  916. he go?

  917. Where was

  918. Town Hall?

  919. He went

  920. to the

  921. gates.

  922. You want

  923. to look

  924. at a

  925. virtuous

  926. woman,

  927. then Proverbs

  928. tells you

  929. that her

  930. husband will

  931. be esteemed

  932. at the

  933. city gate.

  934. Does that

  935. mean she's

  936. banished him

  937. from the

  938. house?

  939. No,

  940. it means

  941. he's part

  942. of the

  943. leadership.

  944. Part of

  945. the

  946. strategy

  947. group of

  948. the village

  949. or the

  950. town or

  951. the city.

  952. And Jesus

  953. is giving

  954. them and

  955. us this

  956. insight into

  957. the fact

  958. that he is

  959. going to

  960. build his

  961. church on

  962. territory that

  963. the enemy

  964. has come to

  965. occupy from

  966. Genesis 3

  967. onwards.

  968. words.

  969. This is

  970. why at

  971. the end

  972. of this

  973. gospel,

  974. Jesus

  975. says,

  976. now you

  977. need to

  978. know this,

  979. all authority

  980. in heaven

  981. and earth

  982. has been

  983. given to

  984. me.

  985. Well,

  986. didn't he

  987. always have

  988. all authority

  989. in heaven

  990. and earth?

  991. No,

  992. he didn't.

  993. No,

  994. he didn't.

  995. He had to

  996. deal with the

  997. prince of the

  998. power of the

  999. air before

  1000. he won back

  1001. authority on

  1002. earth.

  1003. That's why

  1004. he's able to

  1005. say the

  1006. son of man

  1007. has authority

  1008. on earth

  1009. to forgive

  1010. sins because

  1011. of what he's

  1012. going to do

  1013. on the cross.

  1014. And this

  1015. is a powerful

  1016. thing that

  1017. Jesus is

  1018. saying.

  1019. We have to

  1020. go into all

  1021. the world

  1022. because he's

  1023. regained as

  1024. the second

  1025. man and the

  1026. last Adam.

  1027. He has

  1028. regained the

  1029. authority that

  1030. Adam lost,

  1031. created to

  1032. have authority,

  1033. to have

  1034. reign,

  1035. given dominion

  1036. and losing

  1037. the kingdom.

  1038. And now

  1039. Jesus has

  1040. overcome the

  1041. enemy.

  1042. And he's

  1043. got twelve

  1044. men and one

  1045. of them will

  1046. betray him.

  1047. And he's

  1048. down to

  1049. eleven.

  1050. And the

  1051. gates of

  1052. Hades.

  1053. You can

  1054. see that.

  1055. You can

  1056. see in the

  1057. gospel story

  1058. how

  1059. Satan's

  1060. strategy

  1061. against

  1062. Jesus

  1063. changes.

  1064. Early on

  1065. it's to

  1066. keep him

  1067. from the

  1068. cross.

  1069. Later on

  1070. it's to

  1071. get him

  1072. to the

  1073. cross,

  1074. outside of

  1075. the will

  1076. of God.

  1077. So he

  1078. will use

  1079. every hellish

  1080. strategy

  1081. to destroy

  1082. this kingdom.

  1083. But Jesus

  1084. prevails.

  1085. And from

  1086. then on

  1087. he prevails

  1088. everywhere.

  1089. he

  1090. will use

  1091. him.

  1092. But it's a

  1093. word of

  1094. counsel to

  1095. us,

  1096. isn't it?

  1097. That wherever

  1098. he builds,

  1099. the gates of

  1100. Hades will

  1101. seek to

  1102. withstand.

  1103. They will

  1104. seek to

  1105. shout down.

  1106. That's an

  1107. interesting metaphor,

  1108. isn't it?

  1109. Because it's

  1110. happening all

  1111. around us.

  1112. Just mention

  1113. the name of

  1114. Jesus or

  1115. say something

  1116. about the

  1117. Bible and

  1118. you're liable

  1119. to be

  1120. shouted down.

  1121. this is a

  1122. contemporary

  1123. ring about

  1124. it.

  1125. And I want

  1126. you to know

  1127. that this is

  1128. not just

  1129. some

  1130. future

  1131. prophecy

  1132. that Jesus

  1133. is giving.

  1134. These

  1135. very men

  1136. saw this

  1137. promise

  1138. and prophecy

  1139. come true

  1140. within

  1141. 18 months.

  1142. They saw

  1143. Jesus building

  1144. his church

  1145. and then in

  1146. the early

  1147. chapters of

  1148. Acts,

  1149. what do

  1150. you discover?

  1151. You discover

  1152. all hell

  1153. being let

  1154. loose.

  1155. And

  1156. employing

  1157. Satan's

  1158. three

  1159. characteristic

  1160. strategies.

  1161. First of

  1162. all,

  1163. intimidation.

  1164. Seeking to

  1165. intimidate the

  1166. church from

  1167. outside.

  1168. And then

  1169. the seeking

  1170. of position

  1171. by individuals

  1172. inside,

  1173. Annias and

  1174. Sapphira.

  1175. And then

  1176. when both of

  1177. these strategies

  1178. fail,

  1179. then the

  1180. third

  1181. strategy is

  1182. one of

  1183. producing

  1184. internal

  1185. division,

  1186. isn't it?

  1187. In Acts

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  1188. chapter 6.

  1189. Get them

  1190. murmuring

  1191. against each

  1192. other.

  1193. These are

  1194. these three

  1195. characteristic

  1196. strategies.

  1197. He's always

  1198. using them.

  1199. He uses

  1200. them against

  1201. every Christian,

  1202. every church,

  1203. every fellowship

  1204. of God's

  1205. people.

  1206. But here is

  1207. the promise

  1208. to which we

  1209. anchor

  1210. ourselves.

  1211. Jesus is

  1212. building his

  1213. church.

  1214. And the

  1215. gates of

  1216. Hades will

  1217. not be able

  1218. to prevail

  1219. against it.

  1220. But my

  1221. dear friends,

  1222. we need to

  1223. have, we

  1224. need to have

  1225. the wisdom

  1226. that we get

  1227. from the

  1228. Lord Jesus

  1229. to keep our

  1230. eyes open

  1231. for those

  1232. strategies

  1233. as he

  1234. builds

  1235. his church

  1236. here.

  1237. And that

  1238. leads to

  1239. the fourth

  1240. thing.

  1241. Jesus

  1242. building the

  1243. churches at

  1244. the center

  1245. of his

  1246. ministry.

  1247. Jesus

  1248. builds this

  1249. church with

  1250. people like

  1251. ourselves,

  1252. marked by

  1253. great fragility.

  1254. Jesus

  1255. is ongoingly

  1256. building his

  1257. church in

  1258. enemy-occupied

  1259. territory.

  1260. And Jesus

  1261. is always

  1262. building his

  1263. church on

  1264. the pattern

  1265. of his own

  1266. destiny.

  1267. Church

  1268. architects are

  1269. really interesting

  1270. people.

  1271. And some

  1272. of them are

  1273. really strange

  1274. people.

  1275. For example,

  1276. it's a very

  1277. unusual church

  1278. architect who

  1279. knows how to

  1280. build a pulpit.

  1281. You go to

  1282. the lecterns,

  1283. the lectern

  1284. architects

  1285. design, and

  1286. they're designed

  1287. for architects,

  1288. not for

  1289. preachers.

  1290. But I want

  1291. you to notice

  1292. this.

  1293. When Jesus

  1294. is the

  1295. architect, he

  1296. builds the

  1297. church on

  1298. the pattern

  1299. of his

  1300. own destiny.

  1301. I wonder

  1302. if that's

  1303. why ye

  1304. oldie,

  1305. worldie

  1306. architects,

  1307. when they

  1308. built

  1309. churches,

  1310. they

  1311. characteristically

  1312. built churches

  1313. with the

  1314. ground plan

  1315. of the

  1316. cross.

  1317. And the

  1318. rest of

  1319. this narrative,

  1320. as you will

  1321. find out in

  1322. however many

  1323. weeks'

  1324. time,

  1325. is a

  1326. narrative that

  1327. tells you

  1328. that when

  1329. Jesus builds

  1330. his church,

  1331. he molds

  1332. his people

  1333. into the

  1334. shape of

  1335. his own

  1336. destiny.

  1337. And so he

  1338. speaks here

  1339. about his

  1340. crucifixion and

  1341. his resurrection,

  1342. and he goes on

  1343. to speak about

  1344. the fact that

  1345. the disciples are

  1346. going to share

  1347. in that

  1348. crucifixion by

  1349. taking up the

  1350. cross, and

  1351. they're also

  1352. going to share

  1353. in that triumph,

  1354. because they will

  1355. see the Son of

  1356. Man coming in

  1357. his glory, and

  1358. they get a

  1359. little glimpse

  1360. of that, three

  1361. of them, on

  1362. the Mount of

  1363. Transfiguration

  1364. later on, but

  1365. they're all

  1366. going to see

  1367. that.

  1368. And you see,

  1369. he's advising

  1370. them from the

  1371. beginning, although

  1372. only later on

  1373. would they

  1374. understand it,

  1375. that since the

  1376. Father used a

  1377. cross-shaped

  1378. model in the

  1379. life of his

  1380. Son, he will

  1381. of course continue

  1382. to use that

  1383. model as he

  1384. builds the

  1385. church.

  1386. And so the

  1387. whole pattern

  1388. of our

  1389. individual

  1390. Christian lives,

  1391. as the

  1392. apostles make

  1393. clear, and

  1394. the whole

  1395. pattern of

  1396. the life of

  1397. our church is

  1398. going to be a

  1399. sharing in the

  1400. sufferings of

  1401. Christ.

  1402. I long to

  1403. fill up, says

  1404. Paul, what's

  1405. still lacking in

  1406. me of my

  1407. fellowship with

  1408. Christ and his

  1409. sufferings.

  1410. I want to

  1411. share in the

  1412. fellowship of his

  1413. sufferings so that

  1414. I can share in

  1415. the triumph of

  1416. his resurrection.

  1417. It's the shape of

  1418. the Christian life,

  1419. and it is the

  1420. shape of the

  1421. church.

  1422. And a glorious

  1423. new building, and

  1424. the more you look

  1425. around this building,

  1426. the more interesting

  1427. it becomes.

  1428. A glorious new

  1429. building will not

  1430. change the pattern

  1431. that Jesus is

  1432. using.

  1433. There will be

  1434. suffering.

  1435. suffering.

  1436. There will be

  1437. apparent setbacks.

  1438. There will be

  1439. disappointments.

  1440. There will be a

  1441. tremendous sense of

  1442. our own weakness, and

  1443. not knowing what to

1444. do or how to do it.

  1445. But if Jesus

  1446. continues to build

  1447. his church here, as

  1448. we pray and believe

  1449. he will, there will

  1450. also be those

  1451. marvelous moments

  1452. when we sense we

  1453. are sharing in the

  1454. fruit of his

  1455. suffering and in the

  1456. power of his

  1457. resurrection.

  1458. And we see people

  1459. coming in who have

  1460. never been to church

  1461. in their lives.

  1462. People who have

  1463. begun to read the

  1464. Bible.

  1465. Strangers and

  1466. sometimes strange

  1467. people.

  1468. And we discover

  1469. perhaps that Satan

  1470. creates conflicts

  1471. within, and we

1472. need all to flee to

  1473. Jesus, the

  1474. crucified and

  1475. risen one, and

  1476. cling to his

  1477. promise that he

  1478. will build his

  1479. church.

  1480. Calvin says so

  1481. beautifully in his

  1482. commentary on 1

  1483. Peter from the

  1484. very beginning,

  1485. Christ has shaped

  1486. the church to

  1487. share in his

  1488. death and in his

  1489. resurrection so

  1490. that death would

  1491. be the way to

  1492. life and the

  1493. cross the way

  1494. to victory.

  1495. This is a little

  1496. share in the

  1497. resurrection, isn't

  1498. it?

  1499. I mean, we

  1500. wouldn't be here

  1501. unless Jesus were

  1502. risen.

  1503. But we've come to

  1504. know him in the

  1505. power of his

  1506. resurrection and we

  1507. will share in the

  1508. fellowship of his

  1509. sufferings, become

  1510. like him in his

  1511. death.

  1512. But yes, we will

  1513. share here and

  1514. hereafter in the

  1515. glories of his

  1516. resurrection.

  1517. He is our church

  1518. builder, our risen

  1519. Lord, our glorious

  1520. king.

1521. and as long as our

  1522. eyes are fixed upon

  1523. him, then all will

  1524. be well because he

1525. and not we, he is

  1526. the real church

  1527. builder.

  1528. When Paul asked me

  1529. for a text and a

  1530. title, I did

  1531. actually answer his

  1532. email, incidentally.

1533. I said to him, you

  1534. know, it would be

  1535. fun to call it

  1536. build and they

  1537. will come.

  1538. But then I said,

  1539. that won't do.

  1540. Call it Christ the

  1541. church builder.

  1542. And then I noticed

  1543. it's called build and

  1544. they will come.

  1545. That won't mean

  1546. anything to you.

  1547. And I'm not a great

  1548. movie watcher.

  1549. But there is a, there's

  1550. a Kevin Costner movie.

1551. Some of you will have

  1552. seen Field of Dreams.

  1553. It's very American.

  1554. I know, I've been

  1555. there.

  1556. And it's very, you

  1557. know, it's almost

  1558. new age-ish.

  1559. This man in Iowa

  1560. or somewhere, he

  1561. hears this voice

  1562. saying, build and

  1563. they will come.

1564. And so he builds a

  1565. baseball field because

  1566. he's had this voice

  1567. saying, build and

  1568. they will come.

  1569. And it costs him

  1570. up the earth.

  1571. I think he mortgages

  1572. the farm.

  1573. People think he's

  1574. off his rocker.

  1575. And then towards

  1576. the end of the

  1577. movie, all these

  1578. great baseball stars

  1579. who incidentally

  1580. are not grown men

  1581. wearing pajamas.

1582. You want to see a

  1583. ball being hurled

  1584. at you a hundred

  1585. miles an hour and

  1586. being able to hit

  1587. it.

  1588. And all these great

  1589. baseball stars from

  1590. the past come because

  1591. he's heard the voice

  1592. build and they will

  1593. come.

  1594. Of course, it's

  1595. sheer fantasy.

  1596. fantasy.

  1597. But this is reality.

  1598. Because he is the

  1599. builder.

  1600. So keep your eyes

  1601. fixed on him for

  1602. this reason.

  1603. He's both the

  1604. architect and the

  1605. builder.

  1606. More, he's the

  1607. son and he owns

  1608. the house.

  1609. thanks be to God

  1610. for him, for this,

  1611. for you, for these

  1612. children who should be

1613. in the choir of the

  1614. year competition.

  1615. Either that or this

  1616. room has fabulous

  1617. acoustics.

  1618. Both I suspect are

  1619. true.

  1620. May God bless this

  1621. church to his

  1622. glory.

  1623. Let's pray.

  1624. Our heavenly

  1625. father, we thank you

1626. for the grace of our

  1627. Lord Jesus Christ.

  1628. We think of the

  1629. sacrifice that has

  1630. been made that we

  1631. might sit in this

  1632. room.

1633. We know it has all

  1634. without any

  1635. diminution been

  1636. because of his

  1637. great sacrifice for

  1638. us.

  1639. Where would we be?

  1640. We would not know

  1641. each other.

  1642. We would not love

  1643. each other.

  1644. We would not have

  1645. walked together

  1646. through this journey.

  1647. we would not have

  1648. the hope of the

  1649. gospel.

  1650. We would be

  1651. separated from God

  1652. and without hope

  1653. in this world.

  1654. But you have shown

  1655. such grace to us

  1656. in your son.

  1657. We thank you for

  1658. the thrill of

  1659. living in his

  1660. reclaimed world

  1661. and seeing his

  1662. kingdom extended.

  1663. And we pray

  1664. earnestly,

  1665. father, that you

  1666. would guard this

  1667. family of yours

  1668. here.

  1669. That you would

  1670. wonderfully use

  1671. them for your

  1672. glory.

  1673. That their number

  1674. may increase.

  1675. That you will add

  1676. to the church

  1677. here.

  1678. And that we will

  1679. be able to look

  1680. back on this day

  1681. as a decisive

  1682. day because so

  1683. much of the work

  1684. is now completed.

  1685. But also a day

  1686. of turning when

  1687. it seemed as

  1688. though the

  1689. windows of heaven

  1690. were opened and

  1691. you poured out

  1692. new blessings

  1693. upon your

  1694. people.

  1695. Hear us, we

  1696. pray, and receive

  1697. our thanks in

  1698. Jesus' name.

  1699. Amen.

  1700. Amen.

  1701. Amen.

  1702. Amen.
