  1. What difference does the birth of Jesus Christ make anyway? Answering that question that the letter to the Galatians might not be the first place you think to go to in the Bible.

  2. You'd probably go to Luke's Gospel wouldn't you or Matthew's Gospel in the New Testament and they would be good places to go to if you wanted to find out about the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas time.

  3. But the Apostle Paul here gives us an alternative to the famous nativity accounts that we know so well.

  4. This is Paul's take on the birth of Jesus Christ.

  5. He pulls back the theological curtains on the nativity scene and the reason why the birth in Bethlehem was so significant, just picture it for a moment.

  6. The smelly animals and the baby crying, the chaos and the muck of the cattle shed.

  7. It sounds like a prison cell, doesn't it?

  8. Unless it felt like that for the Son of God.

  9. To willingly contract himself down into a seven or eight pound baby.

  10. Into the custody of a human body.

  11. The restriction and the captivity of that.

  12. But the Apostle Paul thinks of that rather than as a day of captivity, as a day of release.

  13. As a day of freedom.

  14. As a day of emancipation for all of humanity.

  15. And listen to the words that he uses to describe life, the situation, before the first Christmas.

  16. He uses words like captive in verse 23.

  17. Imprisoned.

  18. Under a guardian or a warden.

  19. In that moment where the Son of God, the eternal Son of God, took on human flesh.

  20. He added to him the restriction of a human body becoming contracted.

  21. He is in custody.

  22. And yet we are somehow released.

  23. And it's so true, isn't it?

  24. With presents, the best ones are the ones that you don't think to ask for.

  25. And if someone knows you really, really well, they can get you a present like that, can't they?

  26. Without you giving them your Amazon wish list.

  27. When you don't just say, how did you know it's always what I wanted?

  28. But actually, how did you know when I didn't even know it's what I always wanted?

  29. And Paul shows us here that that is what happened at Christmas time.

  30. God sent a gift.

  31. The gift of Jesus.

  32. The gift that we didn't even know we needed ourselves.

  33. Because first off, he says, before Jesus came, number one, we were imprisoned.

  34. We were imprisoned.

  35. Just look at verse 23.

  36. Now, before faith came, we were held captive under the law.

  37. Imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed.

  38. The birth of Jesus Christ makes a difference because before it happened, Paul says, we were held captive.

  39. Before Jesus arrived, we lived behind bars.

  40. In an invisible prison.

  41. With walls and a floor and a ceiling.

  42. And we couldn't see that prison physically around us.

  43. But it was a prison that was real and it kept us from being free.

  44. Really free.

  45. It made us feel a kind of bondage.

  46. And a restriction.

  47. He says, we were held captive under the law.

  48. Let me give you a bit of background on that letter to the Galatians that we're reading today.

  49. We've jumped in halfway through, haven't we?

  50. We've kind of jumped in a bit cold, really.

  51. Paul writes this letter to a group of churches who are a mixture of Jewish converts to Christianity and non-Jews.

  52. And Galatians is one of the most brutal letters that Paul writes to a group of Christians.

  53. Things are pretty dire.

  54. Earlier in the letter, he says, you've departed from the true gospel to a different false message.

  55. And there are some among them who want to distort the good news of Jesus.

  56. They particularly want to add some Jewish practices.

  57. They want to keep some Old Testament Bible laws like circumcision and like certain religious Jewish days.

  58. And that is what Paul means when he talks about the law here.

  59. But he says to them, why would you want to add those laws onto the wonderful message about Jesus?

  60. That is bizarre behaviour.

  61. And one reason for that is that the law was designed not to set you free, but partly as a prison.

  62. The law was designed and given to you to keep you in a cell.

  63. He says, verse 23, it held us captive.

  64. You could use that word captive to describe the kind of time before a person is kind of judged and sentenced in court.

  65. It's like being held in a holding cell in a local police station.

  66. They're kept in police custody or by the court authorities.

  67. Kept until a further day when proceedings can go further.

  68. That is the kind of thing that's going on here.

  69. So if you open up the Old Testament and you go to the books of the law,

  70. Leviticus and Deuteronomy and in other places,

  71. you can see that law in all of its glorious detail,

  72. keeping the festivals and the feasts,

  73. making sacrifices, giving free will offerings,

  74. giving offerings, giving compulsory offerings,

  75. having ceremonial washings,

  76. wearing certain types of clothing,

  77. not wearing this kind of clothing,

  78. cutting your hair in a certain way,

  79. not cutting your hair in that way,

  80. eating certain foods, not eating those foods,

  81. and on and on and on.

  82. There was so much that you had to do as an Old Testament Jew.

  83. And part of, not all of it,

  84. but part of the design of the law, Paul says,

  85. was to make you realise that you are trapped.

  86. Clean your house in a certain way.

  87. Not in this way, but in this way.

  88. Bake bread in a certain way,

  89. not with yeast, this way.

  90. Using utensils for this and not for that.

  91. Dealing with skin diseases.

  92. Where to go to the toilet.

  93. Not here, but over here.

  94. All the fine details of ceremonies and the days

  95. and the practices were given by God,

  96. and they were good,

  97. but at the same time,

  98. they were to make God's people feel like

  99. they were scratching off the days in the prison cell.

  100. They were constructed to give them longing

  101. for a freedom that they didn't have.

  102. A freedom that they knew

  103. they couldn't get for themselves.

  104. It was, wasn't it,

  105. the prison of perfection.

  106. Keep this good and holy law,

  107. and all of these laws,

  108. and you must keep all of it

  109. to be pleasing to God.

  110. I don't know if you've worn

  111. virtual reality goggles ever.

  112. They're really weird.

  113. I don't know if you've tried it.

  114. I did it once in a doctor's surgery.

  115. He was looking at my spine,

  116. with issues with that,

  117. and then you kind of go in the room,

  118. and it was a chiropractor,

  119. and it was a bit of a grotty room,

  120. to be honest.

  121. Kind of dark and a bit dingy,

  122. with a little kind of old chair in the corner.

  123. But he put this virtual reality headset on me,

  124. and the room transformed.

  125. It was amazing.

  126. Everything was clean.

  127. There was a plant plot

  128. with flowers in the corner.

  129. And then he suddenly brought this projection

  130. of my own body.

  131. where you could see the spine.

  132. And I was like,

  133. who is this guy?

  134. He is incredible.

  135. He has got a six-pack

  136. and pecs.

  137. And then you take off the goggles.

  138. And you remember where you are,

  139. and exactly who you are again.

  140. And the law functioned like that.

  141. The law told you,

  142. get real with yourself,

  143. and take off the goggles.

  144. The law showed them

  145. who they really were,

  146. and where they really were.

  147. The reality is,

  148. it said to them,

  149. you are in a prison

  150. of your own inability

  151. to be right with God.

  152. It was a prison

  153. that taught God's people

  154. that life,

  155. and freedom,

  156. and holiness

  157. cannot be done

  158. ultimately in these things

  159. for you.

  160. By your own efforts.

  161. So the law,

  162. part of it,

  163. made them unsatisfied.

  164. Perfection is required.

  165. The prison told them,

  166. nobody's perfect.

  167. And it was to drive them

  168. away from themselves,

  169. and towards God,

  170. to help them.

  171. It was to drive them

  172. towards faith,

  173. Paul says.

  174. Verse 24.

  175. The law was a guardian,

  176. and not in a positive sense there.

  177. The word is more like a warden.

  178. The law drove them

  179. to faith in God,

  180. as the one who makes us

  181. right with him.

  182. The law wasn't given

  183. so that they could earn

  184. friendship with God,

  185. but precisely to show them

  186. that they couldn't do that.

  187. But they had to trust.

  188. They had to have faith

  189. in the God

  190. who could make it work.

  191. And that is why

  192. Paul mentions Abraham

  193. in verse 29,

  194. because that is exactly

  195. what happened with Abraham.

  196. That Abraham is the kind of

  197. father of the faith,

  198. isn't he?

  199. And do you remember

  200. the story of Abraham?

  201. God asks Abraham,

  202. he kind of appears

  203. to Abraham,

  204. and he asks Abraham

  205. to obey him

  206. and to trust in him.

  207. And we're told

  208. in Genesis,

  209. Abraham believed God,

  210. and that belief

  211. was credited,

  212. counted as righteousness

  213. for Abraham.

  214. Abraham.

  215. And then the law

  216. of God's people

  217. didn't come

  218. for centuries later

  219. until the time

  220. of Moses.

  221. The law wasn't given

  222. as the way

  223. the people could be

  224. made right with God.

  225. It was given

  226. afterwards

  227. to keep them

  228. looking to God

  229. in faith,

  230. just as Abraham

  231. had first done.

  232. Verse 25,

  233. that they might

  234. be justified

  235. by faith.

  236. When you die,

  237. God will ask you,

  238. won't he,

  239. why should I let you

  240. into heaven?

  241. Why should I

  242. justify you?

  243. Why should I say

  244. you are right

  245. with me?

  246. Is it by things

  247. that you have done

  248. in this life?

  249. Or is it because

  250. you believed

  251. I could do it?

  252. I've told this story

  253. before of an old

  254. monk and a student.

  255. And the student

  256. asks his master

  257. for advice

  258. in life.

  259. What's the key?

  260. And the older monk

  261. says to the student,

  262. go back to your cell

  263. and your cell

  264. will teach you

  265. everything.

  266. And the law

  267. is like that.

  268. The law is the

  269. prison facility

  270. that teaches

  271. much about ourselves

  272. and why we need

  273. Jesus.

  274. The incessant,

  275. scrupulous,

  276. detailed,

  277. all-pervading laws

  278. spoke to them

  279. of their inadequacy.

  280. So if you imagine

  281. in any way,

  282. you might not have

  283. grown up

  284. with Jewish religion,

  285. you might not,

  286. this might be the

  287. first time you've

  288. heard any of this,

  289. but if you imagine

  290. in any way

  291. that you are going

  292. to make yourself

  293. right with God,

  294. if you are good

  295. enough to do that,

  296. or that you are

  297. living a good life

  298. and God thinks

  299. that is okay

  300. and you can be

  301. justified,

  302. the law says

  303. just take off

  304. the goggles.

  305. Because it took

  306. them an age

  307. to realise

  308. that that is

  309. absolute baloney.

  310. by the end of it

  311. they were saying,

  312. weren't they,

  313. I'm a sinner,

  314. let me out of here,

  315. let me out.

  316. Before Jesus came

  317. we were held

  318. captive

  319. by our own

  320. sin

  321. and our own

  322. inability

  323. and the law

  324. proved that to us

  325. just as surely

  326. as a concrete

  327. prison would prove

  328. that we are

  329. held captive.

  330. So when Jesus

  331. was born

  332. we were held

  333. captive

  334. but secondly

  335. then faith

  336. came to set us

  337. free.

  338. Faith came to

  339. set us free

  340. and the story

  341. goes of a prison

  342. in the US

  343. where at

  344. twenty past twelve

  345. one Saturday

  346. morning

  347. a glitch

  348. in the security

  349. system

  350. simultaneously

  351. unlocked

  352. all five hundred

  353. cell doors

  354. and just imagine

  355. the look on the

  356. warden's face

  357. as he kind of saw

  358. that on the CCTV

  359. the doors like

  360. dominoes

  361. swinging open

  362. Paul says

  363. until Christ

  364. came

  365. we were under

  366. a warden

  367. but now

  368. faith has come

  369. we are no longer

  370. under a guardian

  371. or a warden

  372. but it's not a

  373. glitch

  374. it is that

  375. a child

  376. has been born

  377. in the prison

  378. and the doors

  379. swing open

  380. Paul says

  381. he is

  382. in this passage

  383. talking about

  384. the birth

  385. of Jesus

  386. Christ

  387. but it's

  388. strange how

  389. he describes

  390. that moment

  391. isn't it

  392. who came

  393. into the world

  394. at Christmas

  395. Paul

  396. look at how

  397. he described it

  398. verse 25

  399. now

  400. faith

  401. has come

  402. he says it

  403. in the same way

  404. in verse 23

  405. before faith

  406. came

  407. we were held

  408. captive

  409. now we are

  410. on the same

  411. page here

  412. aren't we

  413. because verse 24

  414. he elaborates

  415. he says

  416. until Christ

  417. came

  418. so we know

  419. he's talking

  420. about the

  421. coming of the

  422. Lord Jesus

  423. we're on the

  424. same page

  425. we are talking

  426. about the

  427. incarnation

  428. but why say

  429. faith

  430. came

  431. when Jesus

  432. arrived

  433. a coming

  434. faith

  435. that would

  436. be revealed

  437. is he saying

  438. that before

  439. Jesus came

  440. there was

  441. no faith

  442. and then

  443. suddenly people

  444. started to have

  445. this faith

  446. well of course

  447. not

  448. that is the

  449. point about

  450. Abraham

  451. isn't it

  452. he was the

  453. father of

  454. faith

  455. it started

  456. with him

  457. he was the

  458. first to say

  459. I can't do

  460. this God

  461. but I'll

  462. trust in you

  463. now what

  464. he's saying

  465. is that

  466. Jesus came

  467. as the

  468. person

  469. and the

  470. object

  471. that all

  472. those with

  473. true faith

  474. have looked

  475. to

  476. in the

  477. past

  478. he is

  479. the one

  480. he is

  481. the object

  482. of faith

  483. he is

  484. what this

  485. faith is

  486. in

  487. so much

  488. so that

  489. when he

  490. arrives

  491. faith

  492. has found

  493. its goal

  494. faith has

  495. arrived

  496. and him

  497. as the

  498. object

  499. of faith

  500. until

  501. Christmas

  502. time

  503. was not

  504. revealed

  505. Paul says

  506. revealed

  507. means literally

  508. discovered

  509. there is

  510. a sense

  511. that before

  512. Jesus'

  513. birth

  514. the object

  515. of Abraham's

  516. faith

  517. as he

  518. trusted in

  519. God

  520. and Moses'

  521. faith

  522. and David's

  523. faith

  524. and everyone

  525. up until now

  526. they trusted in

  527. God's promises

  528. to make them

  529. right with him

  530. they believed

  531. God

  532. and they acted

  533. based on what

  534. they couldn't

  535. see

  536. and they were

  537. kind of in

  538. this dark

  539. room

  540. and the

  541. furniture

  542. was all

  543. in place

  544. they just

  545. needed to

  546. trust God

  547. for them

  548. to believe

  549. his word

  550. and his

  551. promises

  552. but when

  553. Jesus

  554. arrives

  555. it's as if

  556. the light

  557. is switched

  558. on in

  559. the room

  560. and he

  561. becomes

  562. clear

  563. as the

  564. one that

  565. they've been

  566. believing in

  567. all along

  568. we've been

  569. in this

  570. prison

  571. perfectly

  572. designed

  573. by God

  574. to make

  575. us long

  576. for God

  577. himself

  578. to come

  579. and deal

  580. with our

  581. sins

  582. and each

  583. piece of

  584. law is

  585. like another

  586. bar on

  587. the window

  588. making us

  589. cry out

  590. in faith

  591. for a

  592. saviour

  593. for a

  594. jailbreaker

  595. for one

  596. to finally

  597. fulfil all

  598. these righteous

  599. demands

  600. and the

  601. more we've

  602. lived in

  603. this prison

  604. of perfection

  605. the more

  606. faith rises

  607. and says

  608. not me

  609. but you

  610. God

  611. but now

  612. the goal

  613. of that

  614. faith is

  615. fleshed out

  616. quite literally

  617. and Jesus

  618. is going

  619. to come

  620. and glitch

  621. the prison

  622. doors

  623. by coming

  624. and living

  625. out the

  626. law

  627. by coming

  628. and living

  629. as a

  630. man

  631. being born

  632. under the

  633. law

  634. himself

  635. and completing

  636. every single

  637. element of it

  638. and offering

  639. the ultimate

  640. sacrifice

  641. of all

  642. sacrifices

  643. he will

  644. bring

  645. complete

  646. satisfaction

  647. of the

  648. law

  649. he will

  650. bring

  651. absolute

  652. fulfilment

  653. of this

  654. law

  655. so he

  656. comes

  657. into the

  658. prison

  659. he lives

  660. life

  661. and he

  662. dies a

  663. death

  664. in perfect

  665. obedience

  666. he lives

  667. in the

  668. cell

  669. and he

  670. meets

  671. all the

  672. requirements

  673. of this

  674. prison

  675. he goes

  676. to the

  677. mess hall

  678. and he

  679. lives in

  680. solitary

  681. confinement

  682. and he

  683. is in

  684. the yard

  685. and he

  686. is on

  687. death

  688. row

  689. and the

  690. warden

  691. meets him

  692. and there

  693. is nothing

  694. he can

  695. say to

  696. accuse

  697. Jesus

  698. it is as

  699. if the

  700. prison is

  701. so enamoured

  702. with the

  703. perfection

  704. of this

  705. man

  706. he is

  707. its

  708. master

  709. and the

  710. prison has

  711. met its

  712. match

  713. the builder

  714. and finisher

  715. of this

  716. law

  717. and so

  718. as he

  719. enters the

  720. law

  721. the walls

  722. just kind

  723. of feel

  724. a bit

  725. pointless

  726. and a

  727. bit

  728. redundant

  729. and the

  730. walls

  731. crack

  732. and crumble

  733. and the

  734. whole

  735. edifice

  736. of the

  737. law

  738. crows

  739. down

  740. to him

  741. and it

  742. breathes a

  743. sigh of

  744. relief

  745. Jesus

  746. comes

  747. so the

  748. warden

  749. collects his

  750. things

  751. puts it in

  752. a cardboard

  753. box

  754. and leaves

  755. for good

  756. and we

  757. don't need

  758. him

  759. anymore

  760. his

  761. purpose

  762. was to

  763. make us

  764. long for

  765. another

  766. and over

  767. an age

  768. of God's

  769. people

  770. the prison

  771. was made

  772. to make

  773. the prisoners

  774. long for

  775. someone in

  776. faith

  777. who could

  778. fulfil it

  779. on their

  780. behalf

  781. and now

  782. that someone

  783. has come

  784. in the

  785. flesh

  786. and don't

  787. get me wrong

  788. here because

  789. I'm not saying

  790. that the law

  791. of the Old

  792. Testament in

  793. every respect

  794. is to be

  795. forgotten

  796. I want that

  797. to be really

  798. clear

  799. it continues

  800. to be a

  801. perfect rule

  802. of righteousness

  803. for us

  804. today

  805. but in the

  806. sense that

  807. the law

  808. might be

  809. used to

  810. earn salvation

  811. or as a

  812. gruelling

  813. demonstration of

  814. what is needed

  815. to be righteous

  816. Paul says

  817. elsewhere

  818. the law

  819. in that sense

  820. is now

  821. dead to us

  822. the walls

  823. of our

  824. inability

  825. and slavery

  826. crumble

  827. because there

  828. is one

  829. who has

  830. done his

  831. time

  832. and by

  833. doing so

  834. he's done

  835. all of our

  836. time

  837. he's busted

  838. us out

  839. you may have

  840. seen a book

  841. that came out

  842. a few years

  843. ago called

  844. the year of

  845. living

  846. big biblically

  847. one man's

  848. humble quest

  849. to follow the

  850. bible as

  851. literally as

  852. possible

  853. by AJ

  854. Jacobs

  855. it's kind of

  856. funny but

  857. interesting

  858. points

  859. this guy

  860. he basically

  861. tries to

  862. live his

  863. life in

  864. New York

  865. City

  866. for one

  867. year

  868. following as

  869. many of

  870. the rules

  871. in the

  872. Old Testament

  873. that he

  874. can find

  875. so he

  876. tries wearing

  877. clothes without

  878. mixed fibres

  879. in them

  880. he avoids

  881. certain foods

  882. he tries to

  883. do the whole

  884. thing

  885. but in the end

  886. he concludes

  887. he found it

  888. virtually impossible

  889. to do it all

  890. not least because

  891. he was living in

  892. 20th century

  893. New York

  894. but he really

  895. actually

  896. misunderstands the

  897. point of the

  898. law anyway

  899. it's quite a

  900. shame

  901. you get to the

  902. end of the

  903. book

  904. he's just

  905. not got

  906. this

  907. he misunderstands

  908. the bible

  909. if he thinks

  910. that this year

  911. was living

  912. biblically

  913. because that

  914. was never the

  915. purpose of the

  916. law

  917. living biblically

  918. as the title

  919. says

  920. it is not about

  921. the pursuit of

  922. following the

  923. rules

  924. that life

  925. acts as a

  926. prison

  927. this law

  928. acts as a

  929. prison to

  930. tell you

  931. you need

  932. faith in

  933. another

  934. and so

  935. with the

  936. appearance of

  937. Jesus in

  938. the New

  939. Testament

  940. and the

  941. first Jewish

  942. apostles

  943. they have to

  944. get their

  945. heads around

  946. it

  947. don't they

  948. came

  949. freedom

  950. the freedom

  951. to eat

  952. sausages

  953. wrapped in

  954. bacon

  955. or the

  956. freedom

  957. to wear

  958. jeans

  959. the freedom

  960. to eat

  961. brioche

  962. the freedom

  963. to cut

  964. your hair

  965. if it's

  966. not prohibited

  967. if it doesn't

  968. damage your

  969. conscience

  970. or somebody

  971. else's

  972. conscience

  973. you are

  974. free to

  975. do whatever

  976. you like

  977. free to

  978. wear what

  979. you like

  980. you're free

  981. to eat

  982. what you

  983. like

  984. you're not

  985. bound by

  986. the law

  987. you're free

  988. from the

  989. food regulations

  990. you're free

  991. from the

  992. washing

  993. regulations

  994. you're free

  995. from circumcision

  996. praise be

  997. you're free

  998. from penance

  999. you're free

  1000. from lighting

  1001. candles

  1002. and visiting

  1003. shrines

  1004. you're free

  1005. from eating

  1006. halal food

  1007. you're free

  1008. from having

  1009. to go on

  1010. pilgrimages

  1011. or making

  1012. sacrifices

  1013. you are

  1014. totally free

  1015. from guilt

  1016. and from

  1017. punishment

  1018. from God

  1019. you're free

  1020. from constantly

  1021. rating your

  1022. own performance

  1023. this is not

  1024. a place

  1025. where we come

  1026. to perform

  1027. is it

  1028. church

  1029. sometimes we

  1030. struggle to

  1031. believe that

  1032. you are free

  1033. though to

  1034. serve

  1035. and to

  1036. obey God

  1037. without dread

  1038. and fear

  1039. of punishment

  1040. the doors

  1041. of the law

  1042. as the way

  1043. of you being

  1044. right with

  1045. God

  1046. with the

  1047. God

  1048. who made

  1049. you

  1050. are

  1051. knocked

  1052. out

  1053. and you

  1054. are free

  1055. that is the

  1056. difference

  1057. that the

  1058. birth of

  1059. Jesus

  1060. makes

  1061. we were

  1062. captive

  1063. then

  1064. faith

  1065. came

  1066. but thirdly

  1067. then

  1068. and lastly

  1069. we are

  1070. now not

  1071. slaves

  1072. but sons

  1073. in Christ

  1074. we are

  1075. now not

  1076. slaves

  1077. but sons

  1078. in Christ

  1079. now it's

  1080. not just

  1081. that we

  1082. are freed

  1083. from the

  1084. law

  1085. but it's

  1086. that our

  1087. status

  1088. has changed

  1089. actually

  1090. look at

  1091. verse 26

  1092. for in

  1093. Christ

  1094. Jesus

  1095. you are

  1096. all

  1097. sons

  1098. of

  1099. God

  1100. through

  1101. faith

  1102. now this

  1103. is another

  1104. picture that

  1105. Paul uses

  1106. to talk

  1107. about

  1108. the Old

  1109. Testament

  1110. people of

  1111. God

  1112. he'll develop

  1113. it later

  1114. in the passage

  1115. that we'll

  1116. look at

  1117. next week

  1118. in chapter

  1119. 4

  1120. but it's

  1121. as if

  1122. they were

  1123. living like

  1124. children

  1125. who lived

  1126. in a very

  1127. rich family

  1128. but earlier

  1129. before Jesus

  1130. appears

  1131. in their

  1132. spiritual

  1133. lives

  1134. they were

  1135. no different

  1136. to anyone

  1137. else in

  1138. the household

  1139. they were

  1140. like slaves

  1141. he says

  1142. chapter 4

  1143. verse 1

  1144. but now

  1145. that Christ

  1146. has come

  1147. they've

  1148. kind of

  1149. come of

  1150. age

  1151. in the

  1152. family

  1153. because of

  1154. Christ

  1155. they are

  1156. now

  1157. sons

  1158. in the

  1159. sense

  1160. that they

  1161. have

  1162. entitlement

  1163. to

  1164. inheritance

  1165. he says

  1166. they

  1167. verse 28

  1168. they've

  1169. put on

  1170. Christ

  1171. it's like

  1172. putting on

  1173. a coat

  1174. isn't it

  1175. if you think

  1176. about it

  1177. clothing

  1178. does

  1179. two

  1180. things

  1181. if you

  1182. put on

  1183. a great

  1184. big

  1185. coat

  1186. in the

  1187. winter

  1188. time

  1189. it

  1190. covers

  1191. you up

  1192. doesn't

  1193. it

  1194. and it

  1195. identifies

  1196. who you

  1197. are

  1198. the kind

  1199. of clothes

  1200. you wear

  1201. identify

  1202. you

  1203. so just

  1204. as a

  1205. coat

  1206. or garment

  1207. envelops

  1208. you

  1209. think of

  1210. a big

  1211. jacket

  1212. with

  1213. sheep's

  1214. wool

  1215. inside it

  1216. kind of

  1217. envelops

  1218. you

  1219. doesn't it

  1220. he says

  1221. to them

  1222. free

  1223. faith

  1224. you are

  1225. now

  1226. enveloped

  1227. in

  1228. Jesus

  1229. Christ

  1230. you are

  1231. united

  1232. to him

  1233. they've

  1234. become

  1235. members

  1236. of

  1237. God's

  1238. family

  1239. getting

  1240. a joint

  1241. account

  1242. with

  1243. him

  1244. and then

  1245. clothing

  1246. identifies

  1247. who you

  1248. are

  1249. too

  1250. a

  1251. uniform

  1252. or a

  1253. suit

  1254. or

  1255. overall

  1256. says

  1257. something

  1258. about

  1259. who

  1260. you

  1261. are

  1262. doesn't

  1263. it

  1264. there is

  1265. a garment

  1266. on these

  1267. believers

  1268. that identifies

  1269. them

  1270. as being

  1271. with

  1272. Christ

  1273. and in

  1274. Christ

  1275. so that

  1276. when God

  1277. looks at

  1278. you

  1279. he sees

  1280. this person

  1281. who is

  1282. enveloped

  1283. in the

  1284. perfection

  1285. of Jesus

  1286. you are

  1287. identified

  1288. with him

  1289. you wear

  1290. the uniform

  1291. that he

  1292. wears

  1293. and so

  1294. just as

  1295. the prison

  1296. walls

  1297. crumble

  1298. around

  1299. him

  1300. they

  1301. collapse

  1302. around

  1303. you

  1304. who

  1305. have

  1306. put

  1307. on

  1308. Christ

  1309. and

  1310. trust

  1311. in

  1312. him

  1313. notice

  1314. Paul

  1315. says

  1316. that

  1317. this

  1318. putting

  1319. on

  1320. of

  1321. Christ

  1322. happens

  1323. at

  1324. baptism

  1325. says

  1326. verse

  1327. 27

  1328. as

  1329. many

  1330. of

  1331. you

  1332. have

  1333. been

  1334. baptized

  1335. into

  1336. Christ

  1337. have

  1338. put

  1339. on

  1340. Christ

  1341. I

  1342. love

  1343. the

  1344. Lord's

  1345. timing

  1346. with

  1347. these

  1348. kind

  1349. of

  1350. things

  1351. of

  1352. us

  1353. seeing

  1354. Emiko

  1355. being

  1356. baptized

  1357. today

  1358. what

  1359. happens

  1360. when

  1361. someone

  1362. is

  1363. baptized

  1364. it

  1365. is

  1366. a

  1367. kind

  1368. of

  1369. dressing

  1370. up

  1371. ceremony

  1372. being

  1373. baptized

  1374. is

  1375. to

  1376. put

  1377. on

  1378. Christ

  1379. to

  1380. be

  1381. enveloped

  1382. by

  1383. him

  1384. and

  1385. to

  1386. be

  1387. identified

  1388. in

  1389. him

  1390. so

  1391. if

  1392. you've

  1393. been

  1394. baptized

  1395. this

  1396. morning

  1397. imagine

  1398. yourself

  1399. with

  1400. this

  1401. great

  1402. garment

  1403. over

  1404. you

  1405. this

  1406. garment

  1407. of

  1408. righteousness

  1409. you

  1410. are

  1411. called

  1412. a

  1413. Christian

  1414. because

  1415. you

  1416. bear

  1417. Christ

  1418. he

  1419. envelops

  1420. you

  1421. and

  1422. identifies

  1423. you

  1424. you

  1425. are

  1426. in

  1427. him

  1428. like

  1429. a

  1430. hand

  1431. in

  1432. a

  1433. glove

  1434. baptism

  1435. like

  1436. Paul

  1437. said

  1438. it

  1439. doesn't

  1440. do

  1441. this

  1442. automatically

  1443. it

  1444. comes

  1445. by

  1446. faith

  1447. in

  1448. Jesus

  1449. the

  1450. perfect

  1451. one

  1769. faith

  1770. the

  1776. finds

  1777. its

  1844. he
