  1. Great. If you were here last week you'll know we're kind of carrying on in John's Gospel but we're doing a little mini series within a series in John's Gospel.

  2. Looking at John chapter 6 and particularly what is known as the bread of life discourse in John 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  3. You might remember Jesus saying in verse 35 last week at the top of your sheets, he describes himself as bread, the bread of life.

  4. Come to me and get life, he says. And in this section that we've got printed here he's going to unpack that one verse, that little statement a little bit more.

  5. And actually not just the whole verse but one word he's going to unpack from verse 35.

  6. It's the word comes. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger or thirst.

  7. He's going to tell us now what is involved in that coming to Jesus.

  8. Namely people who come to Jesus haven't just come to him actually but they have been sent to him.

  9. They have actually been given to Jesus by the Father.

  10. Just listen to how Jesus describes these people who come to him.

  11. Verse 37.

  12. All that the Father gives to me will come to me.

  13. Verse 39.

  14. I will lose nothing of all that the Father has given to me.

  15. Christian conversion, coming to Jesus.

  16. Christian believers, he says, are not merely a random collection of people who've sort of blindly found their way to Jesus.

  17. Neither are they people who are born in a certain country or family or with a certain ethnicity.

  18. Neither are Christians manufactured by a culture around them.

  19. Jesus says a Christian is someone who is chosen and selected and presented to Jesus for salvation by God the Father.

  20. They are people given to God the Son by him.

  21. Christians are Jesus' precious possessions, gift-wrapped and delivered to Jesus' door for him to keep and to cherish and to save forever.

  22. I don't know how you feel about it.

  23. As we've gone through John, it feels like we're little toddlers, doesn't it?

  24. Paddling through the waters of John's Gospel step by step.

  25. And as we do that, in this passage, I think we suddenly kind of find ourselves dropping into the deep end.

  26. And we're up to our chins in these deep waters.

  27. Because we are entering here some deep theological waters.

  28. There's some really, really challenging content in this passage.

  29. And it's challenging not just intellectually, but experientially and morally.

  30. Jesus is talking here, isn't he, about God's choosing particular people to give to Jesus.

  31. And him not choosing others to give to Jesus.

  32. It's what theologians call election.

  33. The early church leader, Erasmus, said that passages like this should never be preached at all.

  34. He said, some things are of such a kind that even if they were true and might be known,

  35. it would not be proper to, he says, prostitute them before common ears.

  36. Now forgive his political incorrectness there.

  37. But he and many others say that with this subject, we get to passages like this,

  38. and there should be a big red flag.

  39. But the man who wrote these words, John, is clear, isn't he?

  40. At the end of his gospel, in John 20, he says,

  41. These things, this whole gospel is written that you may believe.

  42. There's no little footnote, is there, in John 20,

  43. saying, apart from John chapter 6, verse 35 to 47.

    John 6:35–47

  44. John, who writes this, says,

  45. No, the flag is well and truly green.

  46. You've got to preach this.

  47. You've got to hear this.

  48. And Jesus himself says, actually, this subject of God choosing, of election,

  49. is definitely for everyone to hear.

  50. In the context here, do you notice who he is speaking to here?

  51. He's speaking to people he says, verse 36, do not believe.

  52. He is speaking to an audience of some believers and non-believers and non-Christians.

  53. If that's you here this afternoon, Jesus thinks that you need to hear about this.

  54. Oddly, he decides, doesn't he, that what you need to hear is this deep subject

  55. about God's infallible, definite, predetermined plan

  56. to give some people to Jesus and not to others.

  57. Election.

  58. If you're a regular here, many of you are,

  59. how would you feel if we announced that in, I don't know, Easter time

  60. we were going to do a sort of evangelistic series of talks?

  61. Sometimes we do them, don't we?

  62. And it would be a series of talks where you could invite your friends along,

  63. it would be accessible to people that have never heard about Jesus or read the Bible,

  64. and it would be sensitive to them.

  65. But the subject matter was not going to be on the question of,

  66. is there a God?

  67. Or even, why does God allow suffering?

  68. Or, why can we trust the Bible?

  69. Although they're good things to ask, aren't they?

  70. But actually, we're going to do a series on election.

  71. How would you feel?

  72. We're not going to do that, I don't think.

  73. But you never hear that, do you?

  74. You never hear of speech missions, or evangelistic meetings,

  75. or university outreach missions,

  76. that are focused on that subject.

  77. Yet here, Jesus preaches election

  78. in an evangelistic sermon

  79. to believers and unbelievers.

  80. To a mixture of people.

  81. And we wonder, why does he do that?

  82. Well, I think Jesus gives us two reasons.

  83. One is a positive reason, one is a negative reason.

  84. First off, we learn here that those given to Jesus

  85. will come to Jesus.

  86. Those given to Jesus will come to him.

  87. Look at verse 37 again.

  88. All that the Father gives to me

  89. will come to me.

  90. People who are chosen

  91. and given to Jesus Christ

  92. by God the Father

  93. to be rescued and loved

  94. will find themselves

  95. coming to him

  96. and being his forever.

  97. as if they are caught

  98. in a sort of tidal wave

  99. of God's love.

  100. God doesn't send these people to Jesus

  101. like we send and receive gifts

  102. and things to each other.

  103. When we do that,

  104. all sorts of things can go wrong.

  105. You get those red cards

  106. coming through your letterbox

  107. don't you at times?

  108. And at the top it says

  109. attempted delivery.

  110. And the thing that was meant for you

  111. hasn't arrived,

  112. it hasn't come to the right place.

  113. You didn't get what was sent to you.

  114. Maybe you weren't in,

  115. you didn't sign for it

  116. or the fee hasn't been paid.

  117. But those who come to Jesus,

  118. those who arrive at Jesus' door

  119. are never like that.

  120. The giving of his people to Jesus

  121. is infallible.

  122. It is effective.

  123. They are flawlessly delivered

  124. and received by him.

  125. Jesus sees his people,

  126. his disciples and followers,

  127. not just as a kind of

  128. random collection of people.

  129. He doesn't come into the world

  130. and sort of go

  131. eeny, meeny, miny, moe.

  132. Which one shall I have?

  133. I'll put all their names in a hat

  134. and I'll pick out a few.

  135. It is not like that.

  136. In one way,

  137. those who come to Jesus

  138. is not up to Jesus on one level.

  139. He says,

  140. no, I've come to do my,

  141. not to do my will

  142. but the will of him who sent me.

  143. Which is not to lose anyone

  144. that the Father has given me.

  145. This is how he sees his people.

  146. He is the good shepherd,

  147. he says in John 10,

  148. whose sheep are those

  149. who he has given to me.

  150. It's my job, John 17,

  151. he prays to God,

  152. to give eternal life

  153. to all you

  154. whom you have given to me.

  155. And the encouraging thing here

  156. in this kind of positive thing

  157. is that this is a mixture of people,

  158. isn't it?

  159. The crowds do not believe

  160. at this moment,

  161. some of them,

  162. but that is not a problem for Jesus.

  163. He's not fazed by that.

  164. It's okay.

  165. It doesn't mean that his church

  166. is going to die out.

  167. Because Jesus knows

  168. that it's not their ability

  169. that is the prime reason

  170. that people come to him.

  171. Nothing about them

  172. actually is the issue.

  173. Since those who God gives to Jesus

  174. will come.

  175. They will.

  176. One way or another.

  177. They will come.

  178. If you are here as a believer,

  179. maybe you've got a great testimony

  180. of how that happened.

  181. Maybe you were in the right place

  182. at the right time.

  183. You were born maybe

  184. into a believing family.

  185. Maybe you had a Christian friend.

  186. You were invited along to church.

  187. I don't know your story.

  188. But let me tell you

  189. what really happened.

  190. What really happened

  191. is that in eternity past,

  192. God the Father

  193. thought of God the Son

  194. and said,

  195. I want to give you a people.

  196. I want to give you this man.

  197. I want to give you this woman.

  198. And so I'm giving you

  199. David Jones.

  200. I'm giving you

  201. Chris Hosier.

  202. I'm giving you

  203. John Mark.

  204. I'm giving you

  205. such and such a person.

  206. And I'm going to

  207. get them

  208. and wrap them up

  209. and give them to you

  210. and deliver them to you,

  211. my son.

  212. For you to have them

  213. and to save them.

  214. When we give gifts

  215. that can go wrong

  216. for all sorts of reasons.

  217. The person might not

  218. even want the gift.

  219. Some parcels

  220. get sent to us,

  221. don't they?

  222. But they get re-gifted.

  223. Some deliveries

  224. get marked

  225. return to sender.

  226. But again,

  227. it's not like that here

  228. with the people

  229. that come to Jesus.

  230. Notice the all

  231. in verse 37.

  232. All that the Father

  233. gives me

  234. will come

  235. and I will not

  236. cast any of them out.

  237. It's not as if

  238. Jesus doesn't want

  239. any of these gifts

  240. or only a few of them.

  241. He doesn't

  242. grin and bear

  243. the gift.

  244. Maybe you think

  245. that's you

  246. if you're a Christian.

  247. You're the one

  248. that became a Christian

  249. but secretly

  250. Jesus thinks

  251. doesn't he,

  252. great,

  253. but actually

  254. they're not what

  255. I had in mind,

  256. Father.

  257. But I suppose

  258. I'll grin and bear it

  259. and I'll receive them

  260. to myself

  261. and be thankful.

  262. It's not like that

  263. because actually

  264. Jesus does have a choice

  265. in who he receives.

  266. He says to his disciples,

  267. I chose you.

  268. You didn't choose me.

  269. And so on another level

  270. it's a mutual thing.

  271. It is like

  272. when a parent

  273. says to the child,

  274. I want to give you

  275. a gift,

  276. son,

  277. and I know

  278. what you want.

  279. And the son says,

  280. yes,

  281. you know

  282. that I'd love

  283. that thing,

  284. Father.

  285. And the father says,

  286. yeah,

  287. I'm going to give you

  288. that thing.

  289. You will have that.

  290. And it's a mutual

  291. decision between

  292. the father

  293. and the son

  294. that Jesus

  295. would receive

  296. his people

  297. and not turn

  298. any away.

  299. And so the father

  300. gives to Jesus

  301. whom he chooses

  302. and Jesus chooses

  303. those whom

  304. the father gives.

  305. It's a really

  306. deep thing,

  307. isn't it?

  308. Hard thing to get

  309. our heads around.

  310. And so these people,

  311. whoever they are,

  312. those who come

  313. to Jesus

  314. are bound

  315. to do that.

  316. They are bound

  317. to Jesus

  318. by this divine,

  319. infallible

  320. gift,

  321. giving.

  322. Whoever they are,

  323. wherever they are,

  324. they will

  325. come.

  326. They will be

  327. delivered to

  328. and signed

  329. for by

  330. and paid

  331. for by

  332. and received

  333. by Jesus.

  334. Notice how

  335. John switches

  336. his description

  337. of Jesus'

  338. audience.

  339. You might remember

  340. early in our passage

  341. he calls them

  342. the crowd,

  343. doesn't he?

  344. The crowd

  345. who

  346. ate bread

  347. and fish.

  348. It's just

  349. a neutral

  350. description

  351. of a group

  352. of people,

  353. isn't it?

  354. The crowd.

  355. But look at

  356. verse 41.

  357. He switches

  358. the title

  359. and he now

  360. talks about

  361. the Jews,

  362. doesn't he?

  363. That is the title

  364. for the people

  365. that we've come

  366. to know

  367. in John's

  368. Gospel

  369. as those

  370. who are

  371. most against

  372. Jesus,

  373. the ones

  374. who frequently

  375. reject him.

  376. But Jesus

  377. isn't fazed

  378. about talking

  379. to them,

  380. is he?

  381. even amongst

  382. those people

  383. who typically

  384. reject him,

  385. if they are

  386. given to him

  387. by the Father,

  388. they will

  389. come to him.

  390. It's not

  391. a question

  392. of if,

  393. but it's a

  394. question of

  395. when for

  396. some of them.

  397. And by

  398. preaching the

  399. Gospel,

  400. that is the

  401. means,

  402. isn't it,

  403. that God

  404. uses,

  405. and through

  406. prayer,

  407. and through

  408. the witness

  409. of his people,

  410. that they

  411. will come.

  412. And what

  413. an encouragement

  414. that is to

  415. us,

  416. isn't it,

  417. as we

  418. seek to

  419. share our

  420. faith,

  421. God's

  422. choice of

  423. people to

  424. give to

  425. Jesus,

  426. doesn't make

  427. us lazy,

  428. it spurs us

  429. on to keep

  430. talking,

  431. and to keep

  432. witnessing,

  433. and to keep

  434. praying,

  435. because in

  436. the end,

  437. those who

  438. are given

  439. to Jesus

  440. will come

  441. inevitably,

  442. and

  443. irresistibly.

  444. I'm sure

  445. that there

  446. are people

  447. in Ealing

  448. right now,

  449. walking around

  450. on the streets,

  451. and maybe in

  452. your workplace,

  453. people that

  454. you know,

  455. who haven't

  456. got the

  457. first idea

  458. about Jesus,

  459. but if

  460. God has

  461. prepared them

  462. to be

  463. delivered to

  464. Jesus,

  465. they will

  466. be delivered

  467. to him,

  468. and they

  469. will come.

  470. It's not

  471. if,

  472. but when.

  473. So that

  474. is the

  475. first thing,

  476. all given

  477. to Jesus

  478. will come.

  479. But then

  480. secondly,

  481. and lastly,

  482. Jesus

  483. says,

  484. another

  485. implication

  486. of this

  487. is that

  488. those

  489. not

  490. given

  491. to

  492. Jesus

  493. will

  494. not

  495. come.

  496. Those

  497. not

  498. given

  499. to

  500. Jesus

  501. will

  502. not

  503. come.

  504. And this

  505. is the

  506. negative

  507. side,

  508. isn't it?

  509. Drop your

  510. eye down

  511. to verse

  512. 44

  513. with me.

  514. He says,

  515. no one

  516. can come

  517. to me

  518. unless

  519. the

  520. Father

  521. who sent

  522. me

  523. draws

  524. him.

  525. when we

  526. send things

  527. all kind

  528. of things

  529. can go

  530. wrong.

  531. One thing,

  532. you might

  533. get sent

  534. something to

  535. your door

  536. that actually

  537. wasn't meant

  538. for you

  539. in the

  540. first place.

  541. Maybe it

  542. was meant

  543. for your

  544. next door

  545. neighbour,

  546. or to

  547. someone

  548. living

  549. previously

  550. at your

  551. address.

  552. Some

  553. things can

  554. come through

  555. our door

  556. that we

  557. don't want,

  558. junk mail,

  559. or whatever.

  560. But the

  561. door to

  562. Jesus'

  563. kingdom is

  564. not like

  565. that.

  566. because

  567. nothing

  568. outside of

  569. what the

  570. Father

  571. gives to

  572. Jesus

  573. will come

  574. through

  575. his door

  576. and will

  577. be received

  578. by Jesus.

  579. If the

  580. person is

  581. not sent,

  582. the kind

  583. of stamp

  584. by God

  585. the Father,

  586. and drawn

  587. by the

  588. Father,

  589. they cannot

  590. in any

  591. way,

  592. apart from

  593. that,

  594. slip their

  595. way into

  596. the letter

  597. box of

  598. salvation.

  599. salvation.

  600. And that

  601. is their

  602. problem here,

  603. isn't it?

  604. Jesus says

  605. the negative

  606. thing here

  607. in response

  608. to something

  609. that they

  610. say in

  611. verse 42,

  612. just look

  613. there,

  614. and they

  615. say,

  616. is this

  617. not Jesus,

  618. the son

  619. of Joseph,

  620. whose father

  621. and mother

  622. we know?

  623. How does

  624. he now say

  625. I've come

  626. down from

  627. heaven?

  628. Now,

  629. the kind

  630. of confusion

  631. on that

  632. may be

  633. understandable,

  634. but John

  635. hints at a

  636. problem that

  637. we've seen

  638. before in

  639. the gospel,

  640. it is the

  641. problem of

  642. people's proud

  643. assumption of

  644. Jesus.

  645. It is their

  646. reliance on

  647. faculties of

  648. human deduction

  649. alone,

  650. isn't it?

  651. It's those

  652. words that

  653. we've heard

  654. before,

  655. we know,

  656. we know,

  657. we know

  658. Jesus'

  659. father and

  660. his mother,

  661. we know

  662. where he's

  663. come from,

  664. we know

  665. his mum

  666. and dad,

  667. we know

  668. who he is.

  669. They are

  670. judging him

  671. by human

  672. standards.

  673. And so

  674. because of

  675. that,

  676. they cannot

  677. receive his

  678. gifts.

  679. Doesn't it

  680. highlight the

  681. powerlessness

  682. of the

  683. natural person

  684. to come to

  685. Jesus without

  686. being drawn

  687. by the

  688. father?

  689. Without

  690. God working

  691. in a person

  692. in us and

  693. giving us to

  694. Jesus,

  695. we are

  696. totally unable

  697. to see who

  698. Jesus is

  699. and where

  700. he has

  701. come from

  702. and what

  703. he's come

  704. to do.

  705. It reminds

  706. us,

  707. doesn't it,

  708. that we

  709. can witness

  710. and preach

  711. and take

  712. people to

  713. church and

  714. we can tell

  715. them the

  716. gospel until

  717. we're blue

  718. in the face.

  719. But unless

  720. the father

  721. draws them,

  722. nothing will

  723. happen.

  724. In that

  725. case,

  726. even the

  727. greatest

  728. theologian on

  729. earth will

  730. never come

  731. to Jesus.

  732. And yet

  733. we do

  734. all those

  735. things,

  736. don't we,

  737. knowing that

  738. those he

  739. has given

  740. to Jesus

  741. will come

  742. to him.

  743. Just as we

  744. close now,

  745. it struck me

  746. this week

  747. preparing this,

  748. that Jesus

  749. does tell

  750. people in

  751. John's gospel

  752. to do

  753. things that

  754. he knows

  755. they cannot

  756. do themselves.

  757. Think about

  758. that.

  759. He commands

  760. people to

  761. do stuff

  762. that he

  763. knows full

  764. well they

  765. are incapable

  766. of doing.

  767. He tells

  768. a lame

  769. man to

  770. walk,

  771. doesn't he?

  772. He tells

  773. a dead

  774. man to

  775. get out

  776. of a

  777. tomb.

  778. And maybe

  779. the even

  780. harder thing,

  781. he tells

  782. people to

  783. believe and

  784. come to

  785. him.

  786. Knowing full

  787. well they

  788. can't do

  789. that by

  790. themselves.

  791. And on

  792. one level

  793. it's utterly

  794. ridiculous isn't

  795. it really?

  796. But Jesus

  797. in his

  798. wisdom he

  799. does that

  800. freely and

  801. confidently

  802. knowing that

  803. God uses

  804. the means of

  805. his words to

  806. do the

  807. impossible and

  808. to draw those

  809. who otherwise

  810. would not.

  811. Knowing that

  812. some at

  813. least will

  814. come.

  815. love to

  816. love to

  817. If you're

  818. a bit worried

  819. about this

  820. election thing

  821. this whole

  822. God choosing

  823. people

  824. if you're

  825. sat thinking

  826. have I been

  827. chosen

  828. am I one of

  829. those people

  830. that has been

  831. chosen to

  832. be given

  833. to Jesus

  834. I just want to

  835. say that

  836. actually isn't

  837. the right

  838. question to

  839. ask

  840. but the right question simply is

  841. have I come to Jesus?

  842. am I coming to Jesus?

  843. and if you haven't

  844. then you need to pray for God's help

  845. don't you?

  846. knowing that you can't do that by yourself

  847. you need to pray to the Father

  848. that he might draw you to Jesus

  849. knowing that he's doing that right now

  850. as his word comes to you

  851. and do it and come to him

  852. with his help

  853. but if you have already done that

  854. if you've come to Jesus

  855. and you want to do that

  856. and you're seeking to do that

  857. we're not perfect are we?

  858. but we want to do that

  859. honestly don't be fazed by the rejection of people around you

  860. who refuse to do that

  861. because those given to the Son

  862. by the Father will come

  863. they will come

  864. and if they are given

  865. they will be delivered

  866. and they will be received

  867. and they will be kept by Jesus

  868. so keep doing what you're doing

  869. freely and confidently

  870. as Jesus does

  871. let's pray

  872. thanks

  873. Thank you.
