  1. Do open your Bibles to Matthew 12.

  2. Matthew 12, which in the Church Bibles is on page 817.

  3. !

  4. The one point is don't miss the point.

  5. Don't miss the point.

  6. Last Sunday we looked at Matthew's Gospel

  7. and we looked at Matthew 12.

  8. Come to me, all of you, while weary and heavy laden.

  9. Take my yoke upon you.

  10. Learn from me.

  11. And with this gracious invitation you get this incredible promise, don't you?

  12. And I will give you rest, Jesus says.

  13. I'll give you rest and you will find rest for your souls

  14. because I'm gentle and I'm humble in heart.

  15. And Jesus says, my yoke living for me

  16. has a sense in which it is easy and my burden is light.

  17. Well, chapter 12 begins in this way.

  18. It says, at that time Jesus went through the grain fields

  19. on the Sabbath.

  20. And his disciples were hungry

  21. and began to eat.

  22. They began to collect

  23. herds of corn and eat.

  24. When the disciples saw it,

  25. when the Pharisees saw it,

  26. and the religious leaders,

  27. they said to him,

  28. look, your disciples are doing

  29. what is not lawful for them to do

  30. on the Sabbath.

  31. It's a really interesting problem.

  32. And the Sabbath was

  33. extremely

  34. and enormously

  35. significant for Jewish people.

  36. For the Jews of that day.

  37. And so it should be.

  38. The Sabbath day had been given by God

  39. and it's way, way, way back

  40. in the days of Moses.

  41. It was to be a weekly reminder.

  42. A weekly text.

  43. Every week.

  44. A day

  45. which spoke of

  46. the reason why

  47. you and I had been created.

  48. It was to tell the people of Israel

  49. that they were not to live

  50. their whole of their lives

  51. for work.

  52. Work wasn't the big thing.

  53. They had to work, of course,

  54. each day.

  55. But they would take one day

  56. to remind them

  57. that God had made them.

  58. And that God has chosen them.

  59. And that God has redeemed them.

  60. And God had promised

  61. to bring them into rest.

  62. It was the most wonderful promises

  63. on the Sabbath day.

  64. And the end of suffering.

  65. And the end of pain.

  66. The end of hardship.

  67. Sometimes,

  68. in the Old Testament,

  69. it was expressed

  70. as rest from your enemies.

  71. Deliverance from.

  72. The end of war.

  73. No more hostility.

  74. No more conflict.

  75. It was to be a day of peace

  76. and a day of rest.

  77. Of peace with God

  78. and rest with God.

  79. And those who believed God

  80. believed that

  81. He would bring His people

  82. to that promised rest.

  83. It was a weekly foretaste

  84. of what was to come.

  85. And the Sabbath day.

  86. Sabbath is

  87. the Hebrew word for rest.

  88. The Sabbath day

  89. was a weekly reminder

  90. that this is where

  91. the world is heading.

  92. This is what the whole

  93. of creation is for.

  94. The goal of creation.

  95. The goal of redemption.

  96. A world at rest.

  97. Where everything was heading.

  98. And it was not about

  99. human achievement.

  100. It was not that humans

  101. were going to work for it.

  102. It wasn't development.

  103. It wasn't progress.

  104. But it was God's rest.

  105. And that's where it was heading.

  106. And so it's no wonder

  107. that Jewish people

  108. and Christian people

  109. throughout the ages

  110. have taken the Sabbath day

  111. very, very seriously.

  112. But we come to

  113. the beginning of Matthew 12

  114. with the end of Matthew 11

  115. still ringing in our ears

  116. and we're forced,

  117. I think, to ask

  118. how does Jesus

  119. promise

  120. all who come to rest

  121. relate to the Jewish Sabbath?

  122. And the Sabbath day?

  123. And all that is sad for?

  124. Are they connected at all?

  125. So here in Matthew 12, verse 1

    Matthew 12:1

  126. we see Jesus and His disciples

  127. after they've just heard

  128. that invitation

  129. to come to Jesus

  130. and find rest.

  131. And we see Jesus and His disciples

  132. on a Sabbath day

  133. and they're walking

  134. through cornfields

  135. and they feel a little bit peckish.

  136. Perhaps they knew

  137. Deuteronomy 23, verse 25

    Deuteronomy 23:25

  138. but it may well be

  139. that this was familiar

  140. to them.

  141. Because it says

  142. in that verse

  143. Deuteronomy 23, 25

  144. if you find yourself

  145. walking through

  146. a neighbour's cornfield

  147. it's quite okay

  148. for you to pick

  149. a few corns

  150. by hand

  151. as long as you don't

  152. take a side to it

  153. or kind of drive

  154. your combine harvester

  155. into their field

  156. it's fine if you're

  157. just walking through it

  158. to grab some

  159. grains of corn.

  160. Whether or not

  161. they realise Deuteronomy 23, 25

  162. we don't know

  163. but they pick some corn

  164. and they munch away.

  165. Well there are some

  166. Pharisees nearby

  167. and they saw

  168. what Jesus did

  169. and their mood

  170. is very swift

  171. let me miss you

  172. and the Pharisees

  173. saw it

  174. they said to him

  175. look

  176. your disciples

  177. are doing

  178. what is not

  179. lawful to do

  180. on the Sabbath.

  181. Now by unlawful

  182. they meant

  183. that there was

  184. a direct law

  185. from God

  186. that explicitly

  187. forbade

  188. picking an ear

  189. of corn

  190. on the Sabbath day.

  191. But of course

  192. when we go back

  193. and look at actually

  194. what the Bible says

  195. the law of God

  196. does not say that.

  197. You shall do

  198. no work

  199. on the Sabbath day

  200. yes

  201. and the purpose

  202. of the Sabbath day

  203. was to rest

  204. and that God

  205. promised rest

  206. for which the whole

  207. world was being made

  208. and into which

  209. God is going to

  210. bring his people

  211. but the Pharisees

  212. they're concerned

  213. is a long

  214. long way

  215. from that.

  216. What happened

  217. was that the

  218. Jewish traditions

  219. had developed

  220. and a whole lot

  221. of things

  222. had been added

  223. onto God's law

  224. that a good Jew

  225. must not do

  226. on the Sabbath day.

  227. Not only must you

  228. not do any work

  229. but you must not

  230. do anything

  231. vaguely approaching

  232. work

  233. even if it looked

  234. like work

  235. you must not do it.

  236. And picking

  237. an ear of corn

  238. when you think

  239. of it

  240. well to them

  241. it was harvesting.

  242. And harvesting

  243. will not certainly

  244. work.

  245. Now I don't want

  246. to caricature it

  247. I think it's

  248. very easy

  249. to caricature

  250. the Pharisees

  251. they were sincere

  252. they had a reputation

  253. they were serious

  254. about life

  255. and about the Bible

  256. and about their traditions

  257. and they wanted

  258. to be very

  259. very careful

  260. ever so careful

  261. not to break

  262. God's law

  263. and still

  264. they created

  265. a whole lot

  266. of other laws

  267. to put around

  268. God's law

  269. and so you would

  270. never even get

  271. close to breaking

  272. God's law

  273. but I wonder

  274. if you begin

  275. to see something

  276. that it would

  277. be hilarious

  278. if it wasn't

  279. so tragic

  280. in this passage.

  281. Notice

  282. carefully

  283. how Jesus responds

  284. from what we've

  285. seen

  286. in Matthew's Gospel

  287. I wonder how

  288. you'd expect

  289. him to respond

  290. he might have

  291. said

  292. it might be

  293. look here

  294. fellas

  295. there's nothing

  296. in the law

  297. about picking

  298. ears of corn

  299. on the Sabbath

  300. day

  301. stop being

  302. ridiculous

  303. what they're

  304. doing is not

  305. lawful

  306. what are you

  307. talking about

  308. he could have

  309. said something

  310. like that

  311. in fact

  312. anyone could have

  313. said something

  314. like that

  315. but Jesus

  316. said something

  317. far far more

  318. radical

  319. than that

  320. he said

  321. something

  322. that only

  323. Jesus

  324. could say

  325. look at

  326. verse 3

  327. he said

  328. to them

  329. have you

  330. not

  331. read

  332. remember

  333. when Jesus

  334. speaks

  335. he requires

  336. you and I

  337. to think

  338. about what

  339. he says

  340. sometimes

  341. it's not

  342. obvious

  343. but the

  344. pieces fall

  345. into place

  346. so Jesus

  347. said to

  348. them

  349. in verse

  350. 3

  351. have you

  352. not

  353. read

  354. what David

  355. did when

  356. he was

  357. hungry

  358. and those

  359. who were

  360. with him

  361. how he

  362. entered

  363. the house

  364. of God

  365. and he

  366. ate the

  367. bread

  368. of the

  369. presence

  370. which was

  371. not lawful

  372. for him

  373. to eat

  374. nor for

  375. those who

  376. were with

  377. him

  378. but only

  379. for the

  380. priest

  381. Jesus

  382. is not

  383. only one

  384. not to

  385. mince words

  386. or play

  387. games

  388. he is

  389. faced with

  390. the highly

  391. respected

  392. religious

  393. leaders

  394. the scholars

  395. of the

  396. scriptures

  397. the theologians

  398. of the day

  399. and if anyone

  400. knows their

  401. bible

  402. the Pharisees

  403. know their

  404. bible

  405. scrupulously

  406. and Jesus

  407. responds to

  408. their accusation

  409. have you not

  410. read

  411. of all

  412. the people

  413. to say

  414. that to

  415. read your

  416. bible

  417. he says

  418. to them

  419. and he

  420. refers to

  421. that to

  422. what he

  423. says in

  424. 1 Samuel

  425. 12

  426. where the

  427. great king

  428. David is

  429. on the run

  430. for his

  431. life

  432. from Saul

  433. and David

  434. his family

  435. and his

  436. companions

  437. come to a

  438. little town

  439. called

  440. Nob

  441. where the

  442. tabernacle

  443. was

  444. and they

  445. eat the

  446. consecrated

  447. bread

  448. in the

  449. tabernacle

  450. and only the

  451. priests were

  452. allowed to

  453. eat that

  454. according to

  455. the book

  456. of

  457. Vertigo

  458. and the

  459. assumption

  460. is that

  461. Jesus says

  462. what David

  463. did is

  464. ok

  465. you could

  466. say it

  467. was an

  468. awful

  469. but what

  470. is his

  471. point

  472. how is

  473. he arguing

  474. is this

  475. what Jesus

  476. is saying

  477. is Jesus

  478. saying it's

  479. ok to

  480. break the

  481. letter of

  482. the law

  483. in extreme

  484. circumstances

  485. that's how

  486. some people

  487. do it

  488. if you're

  489. starving

  490. well it's

  491. ok to

  492. disregard

  493. God's

  494. law

  495. I don't

  496. think he

  497. said that

  498. it's not

  499. ok for

  500. you and

  501. I to

  502. break

  503. God's

  504. law

  505. just

  506. because

  507. we

  508. think

  509. we

  510. need

  511. to

  512. on the

  513. other

  514. hand

  515. if David's

  516. companions

  517. were starving

  518. and they

  519. certainly

  520. were very

  521. hungry

  522. that wasn't

  523. true of

  524. Jesus'

  525. companions

  526. were they

  527. the disciples

  528. were not

  529. starving

  530. it's not

  531. as if they

  532. were about

  533. to drop

  534. it's

  535. they're on

  536. a Sunday

  537. afternoon

  538. walk in

  539. a field

  540. and they

  541. feel a bit

  542. packaged

  543. that's all

  544. for what's

  545. his point

  546. what is

  547. the connection

  548. between the

  549. unlawful act

  550. of David

  551. and the

  552. act of

  553. Jesus'

  554. disciples

  555. that the

  556. Pharisees

  557. called

  558. unlawful

  559. it's not

  560. obvious

  561. so think

  562. with me

  563. keep that

  564. question in

  565. mind

  566. but hear

  567. the next

  568. provocative

  569. statement

  570. look at

  571. verse 5

  572. again

  573. or have

  574. you not

  575. read

  576. in the

  577. law

  578. how

  579. on the

  580. Sabbath

  581. the priests

  582. in the

  583. temple

  584. profane

  585. the

  586. Sabbath

  587. and are

  588. guiltless

  589. and are

  590. innocent

  591. that's to

  592. say there

  593. is a law

  594. from God

  595. that says

  596. you shall

  597. not do

  598. any work

  599. on the

  600. Sabbath

  601. but the

  602. priests

  603. they've got

  604. to work

  605. haven't they

  606. the priests

  607. have to do

  608. work

  609. the same

  610. law of

  611. God

  612. required the

  613. priests

  614. to do

  615. work on

  616. the

  617. Sabbath

  618. day

  619. and it

  620. requires

  621. the priests

  622. to make

  623. extra

  624. sacrifices

  625. on the

  626. Sabbath

  627. do you

  628. remember

  629. Numbers 28

  630. last week

  631. and the

  632. priests

  633. have to

  634. double the

  635. amount

  636. of

  637. sacrifices

  638. so if

  639. they were

  640. making

  641. two

  642. lab

  643. offerings

  644. normally

  645. every

  646. day

  647. on

  648. Sabbath

  649. they

  650. made

  651. four

  652. and so

  653. it was a

  654. busy day

  655. it sounds like

  656. work to be

  657. but again

  658. what is the

  659. point

  660. was he saying

  661. that if you look

  662. carefully

  663. it's obvious

  664. that the law

  665. is not absolute

  666. on these matters

  667. but the law

  668. allows for

  669. exceptions

  670. the priests

  671. have to

  672. work on

  673. the

  674. Sabbath

  675. well again

  676. I don't

  677. think that's

  678. the point

  679. it's the

  680. point you

  681. can make

  682. but it's

  683. not the

  684. point that

  685. Jesus

  686. may be

  687. here

  688. Jesus

  689. himself

  690. is not

  691. a

  692. priest

  693. his

  694. disciples

  695. were not

  696. priests

  697. and you

  698. could hardly

  699. compare what

  700. they were

  701. doing

  702. plucking

  703. an ear

  704. of

  705. corn

  706. on a

  707. Sabbath

  708. afternoon

  709. walk

  710. and munching

  711. away to

  712. offering

  713. sacrifices

  714. in the

  715. temple

  716. it's

  717. different

  718. but we

  719. begin to

  720. see the

  721. point of

  722. verse 6

  723. where he

  724. says this

  725. he says

  726. that

  727. I tell

  728. you

  729. something

  730. greater

  731. than the

  732. temple

  733. is here

  734. and by

  735. implication

  736. I take

  737. it

  738. something

  739. greater

  740. than

  741. David

  742. is here

  743. and the

  744. point is

  745. this

  746. that even

  747. in the

  748. Old

  749. Testament

  750. there

  751. were

  752. greater

  753. things

  754. than

  755. the

  756. Lord

  757. greater

  758. things

  759. than the

  760. Lord

  761. considering

  762. the

  763. consecrated

  764. bread

  765. there

  766. were

  767. greater

  768. things

  769. than

  770. the

  771. Lord

  772. concerning

  773. no

  774. work

  775. on

  776. Sabbath

  777. namely

  778. King

  779. David

  780. and the

  781. temple

  782. and not

  783. working

  784. on

  785. Sabbath

  786. not

  787. working

  788. on

  789. Sabbath

  790. was

  791. very

  792. important

  793. but it's

  794. not an

  795. end

  796. of

  797. itself

  798. it points

  799. to

  800. something

  801. greater

  802. that's

  803. the

  804. point

  805. this

  806. morning

  807. and

  808. now

  809. that

  810. something

  811. greater

  812. than

  813. David

  814. is

  815. here

  816. it's

  817. not

  818. entirely

  819. clear

  820. yet

  821. so

  822. Jesus

  823. runs

  824. the

  825. same

  826. argument

  827. by them

  828. again

  829. instead

  830. the

  831. insult

  832. he uses

  833. is not

  834. have you

  835. not

  836. read

  837. but

  838. if

  839. you'd

  840. only

  841. known

  842. look at

  843. verse 7

  844. if

  845. you'd

  846. only

  847. known

  848. what

  849. this

  850. means

  851. what

  852. the

  853. words

  854. mean

  855. if

  856. you'd

  857. only

  858. understood

  859. what

  860. you

  861. read

  862. and

  863. he

  864. quotes

  865. from

  866. Hosea

  867. God

  868. says

  869. in

  870. Hosea

  871. I

  872. desire

  873. mercy

  874. not

  875. sacrifice

  876. if

  877. only

  878. you'd

  879. understood

  880. those

  881. words

  882. you

  883. would

  884. not

  885. have

  886. condemned

  887. the

  888. innocent

  889. now

  890. it's

  891. the same

  892. kind of

  893. point

  894. as

  895. before

  896. the

  897. sacrificial

  898. laws

  899. of the

  900. Old

  901. Testament

  902. are

  903. important

  904. they

  905. are

  906. given

  907. by

  908. God

  909. you

  910. can't

  911. dismiss

  912. them

  913. you

  914. can't

  915. say

  916. they're

  917. nothing

  918. but

  919. just

  920. like

  921. the

  922. Sabbath

  923. day

  924. laws

  925. were

  926. not

  927. themselves

  928. the

  929. reality

  930. these

  931. were

  932. signs

  933. and

  934. symbols

  935. keeping

  936. the

  937. sacrificial

  938. law

  939. keeping

  940. the

  941. Sabbath

  942. law

  943. to

  944. the

  945. letter

  946. or

  947. even

  948. way

  949. beyond

  950. the

  951. letter

  952. as

  953. the

  954. Pharisees

  955. did

  956. and

  957. then

  958. failing

  959. to

  960. understand

  961. what

  962. the

  963. sacrifices

  964. were

  965. all

  966. about

  967. and

  968. failing

  969. to

  970. understand

  971. what

  972. the

  973. Sabbath

  974. day

  975. pointed

  976. you

  977. to

  978. is

  979. to

  980. miss

  981. the

  982. point

  983. and

  984. so

  985. no

  986. matter

  987. how

  988. precisely

  989. you

  990. keep

  991. the

  992. laws

  993. if

  994. you

  995. don't

  996. see

  997. what

  998. they

  999. were

  1000. pointing

  1001. to

  1002. you

  1003. miss

  1004. the

  1005. point

  1006. well now

  1007. comes the

  1008. crunch

1009. where he said a moment

  1010. goodly he said

  1011. someone something

  1012. greater than the

  1013. Sabbath

  1014. as the

  1015. temple is here

1016. look what he says in verse 8

1017. he says for the son of man

  1018. is lord of the

  1019. Sabbath

1020. he said a moment ago

  1021. something greater than the

  1022. temple is here

1023. and now he says verse 8

1024. for the son of man is the lord of the

  1025. Sabbath

  1026. up until this week

1027. I used to think that what Jesus was saying

  1028. there

  1029. is

1030. I am the one who decides what you can do

1031. and what you can't do on the

  1032. Sabbath

  1033. that's how it's often interpreted

1034. it's as if Jesus said I'm the boss of the

  1035. Sabbath

1036. I can say what is acceptable on

  1037. Sabbath day

1038. and I can say what is not acceptable

1039. and that would be a very big claim

  1040. for him to make

1041. but I saw this week

1042. that what he was claiming

1043. is even more than that

  1044. isn't it absolutely obvious

1045. I don't know why I've not seen it before

  1046. is it absolutely obvious

  1047. that Jesus was saying

1048. I am the lord of the

  1049. Sabbath because

1050. I am the one who will give you

  1051. rest

1052. I am the lord of the

  1053. Sabbath

1054. because it's when you come to me

1055. when you learn from me

  1056. when you take

  1057. my yoke upon me

1058. that then you will find rest

  1059. for your souls

  1060. there is nothing

  1061. magnificent

1062. Jesus is the lord of the

1063. Sabbath because he is the one

  1064. who gives what the

  1065. Sabbath promises

  1066. and for centuries

  1067. and centuries

  1068. and centuries

  1069. they have kept

  1070. the Sabbath

  1071. and it was promising

  1072. something

  1073. and now

  1074. that's something

  1075. the lord of the

  1076. Sabbath has arrived

1077. the one who is to give them

  1078. what the Sabbath promised

  1079. is there

  1080. I think there's even more here

  1081. the son of man

  1082. is lord of the

  1083. Sabbath

  1084. we hear Jesus say

  1085. and again I don't think

1086. and we can hear that

  1087. without hearing an echo

  1088. do you remember

  1089. Matthew chapter 9

    Matthew 9:6

  1090. verse 6

  1091. where he said

  1092. the son of man

  1093. has authority on earth

  1094. to forgive sins

  1095. and you see

  1096. they are

  1097. not two things

  1098. but one thing

  1099. the forgiveness of sins

  1100. is at the heart

  1101. is at the heart

  1102. of the rest

  1103. that Jesus gives

  1104. as lord of the

  1105. Sabbath now

  1106. but I wonder if it's

1107. coming as focus for you

1108. can you see the tragedy

1109. do you see how they

  1110. missed the point

  1111. before their very eyes

1112. was the one who says

  1113. come to me

  1114. all you are weary

  1115. and heavy laden

1116. and I will give you rest

  1117. and these Pharisees

1118. they were so taken up

  1119. with keeping the Sabbath

  1120. with their dues

  1121. and with their don'ts

  1122. they couldn't hear him

  1123. they couldn't hear him

1124. and what you can find

  1125. is tragically

  1126. in churches like ours

  1127. is that

  1128. people can be

  1129. hugely taken up

  1130. with good things

  1131. church leaders

  1132. can be hugely

  1133. taken up

  1134. with church order

  1135. people

  1136. can get

  1137. very

  1138. very upset

  1139. sometimes

  1140. about the way

  1141. something is done

  1142. and the way

  1143. something is done

  1144. in church life

  1145. and often

  1146. here

  1147. when the streets

  1148. I've done the church

1149. it's not what was done

1150. but it was the way

  1151. that it was done

  1152. and the whole purpose

  1153. of the church

  1154. goes up in flames

  1155. because people

  1156. have missed the point

  1157. and you can miss

  1158. the point this morning

  1159. very dramatically

  1160. first line

  1161. tells us

  1162. that going on

  1163. from that place

  1164. you see Jesus

  1165. went into their synagogue

  1166. isn't that interesting

1167. look at the first line

  1168. whose synagogue is it

  1169. their synagogue

  1170. their blind religion

  1171. which cared so much

  1172. about the Sabbath

  1173. traditions

  1174. that it could not

  1175. recognise actually

1176. the law of the Sabbath

  1177. it was not theirs

  1178. it was theirs

  1179. not his

  1180. and the synagogue

  1181. is the place

  1182. of such religion

  1183. and there

  1184. in their synagogue

  1185. on this Sabbath day

  1186. there's a man

  1187. with a shriveled hand

  1188. and like all the

  1189. sickness and pain

  1190. of this world

  1191. this man

1192. was part of a world

  1193. that is not yet

  1194. at rest

  1195. that has not yet

  1196. entered into that rest

  1197. and so we've got

  1198. a rather tight situation

  1199. you see

  1200. in the synagogue

  1201. of the Sabbath

  1202. the tradition keepers

  1203. we've got a suffering

  1204. human being

  1205. and into that synagogue

  1206. comes the one

  1207. who claims to be

1208. the Lord of the Sabbath

  1209. and the Sabbath

  1210. tradition keepers

  1211. want to use

  1212. the suffering man

  1213. to discredit

1214. the Lord of the Sabbath

1215. do you see the verse 10

1216. and the man was there

  1217. with a withered hand

  1218. and they asked him

  1219. is it lawful

1220. to heal on the Sabbath

  1221. so that they might

  1222. accuse him

  1223. Jesus' response

  1224. shows the brutal

  1225. emptiness

  1226. of a tradition

  1227. obsessed religion

  1228. look at verse 11

  1229. he said to them

  1230. which one of you

  1231. is a sheep

  1232. that falls into a

  1233. pitch on the Sabbath

  1234. will not take hold

1235. of it and lift it out

  1236. of how much more

  1237. value is a man

  1238. than a sheep

  1239. of course

  1240. it's

  1241. appropriate

  1242. in his rights

  1243. to do good

  1244. on the Sabbath

  1245. and to make

  1246. that point

  1247. with utter

  1248. finality

  1249. the Lord of the

  1250. Sabbath

  1251. proceeds to give

  1252. the poor man

  1253. a taste of

  1254. real Sabbath rest

  1255. that he'd never

  1256. found in there

  1257. a synagogue

  1258. and Jesus did

  1259. good on the Sabbath

  1260. so verse 13

1261. he says to the man

  1262. stretch out your hand

  1263. and the man

  1264. stretched it out

  1265. and it was restored

  1266. healthy like the other

  1267. how dare he

  1268. how dare he

  1269. what a flagrant

  1270. disregard

  1271. for sin

  1272. in our tradition

  1273. are you not

  1274. poor

  1275. as they say

  1276. at this irregular

  1277. action

  1278. the Pharisees

  1279. were

  1280. and they viewed

  1281. it as wicked

  1282. so look at verse

  1283. 14

  1284. the Pharisees

  1285. went out

  1286. and conspired

  1287. against him

  1288. how to destroy

  1289. him

  1290. but what happened

  1291. then

  1292. in verse 15

  1293. Jesus is aware

  1294. of this

  1295. he withdrew

  1296. from there

  1297. and many

  1298. followed him

  1299. and he healed

  1300. them all

  1301. he withdrew

  1302. from there

  1303. that is the

  1304. synagogue

  1305. and I take it

  1306. he's withdrawing

  1307. in more than

  1308. one sense

  1309. isn't he

  1310. it's not just

  1311. leaving

  1312. and we read

  1313. in verse 15

  1314. that many

  1315. followed him

  1316. there was a

  1317. separation

  1318. that took

  1319. place

  1320. there were

  1321. the Pharisees

  1322. and those

  1323. who stayed

  1324. with them

  1325. stayed

  1326. with that

  1327. religion

  1328. and their

  1329. Sabbath

  1330. rules

  1331. in their

  1332. synagogue

  1333. and there

  1334. were those

  1335. who followed

  1336. Jesus

  1337. the Lord

  1338. of the

  1339. Sabbath

  1340. and we're

  1341. told that

  1342. those who

  1343. followed him

  1344. in verse 15

  1345. he healed

  1346. he healed

  1347. them of

  1348. their sins

  1349. and their

  1350. sorrows

  1351. and their

  1352. sicknesses

  1353. he warned

  1354. them not

  1355. to tell

  1356. me what

  1357. those who

  1358. came to

  1359. him

  1360. he gave

  1361. rest

  1362. rest

  1363. from sickness

  1364. and pain

  1365. and suffering

  1366. over the

  1367. time being

  1368. they were

  1369. told to

  1370. keep quiet

  1371. and then we

  1372. come to

  1373. Matthew's

  1374. really important

  1375. comment at

  1376. the end of

  1377. the section

  1378. which helps

  1379. us understand

  1380. the significance

  1381. of what we've

  1382. just heard

  1383. about

  1384. Matthew of

  1385. course is

  1386. writing from

  1387. the future

  1388. he's writing

  1389. looking back

  1390. on this

  1391. after Jesus'

  1392. death

  1393. his resurrection

  1394. and his

  1395. ascension

  1396. and from that

  1397. point looking

  1398. back he says

  1399. we're sent

  1400. to this was

  1401. to fulfil

  1402. what was spoken

  1403. by the prophet

  1404. Isaiah

  1405. and he

  1406. quotes

  1407. Isaiah

    Isaiah 42 chapter mention

  1408. chapter 42

  1409. and God

  1410. is the

  1411. speaker

  1412. here

  1413. and in

  1414. verse 4

  1415. 18

  1416. God says

  1417. behold my

  1418. servant

  1419. whom I've

  1420. chosen

  1421. my beloved

  1422. with whom

  1423. my soul

  1424. is well

  1425. pleased

  1426. and what

  1427. you've just

  1428. heard is the

  1429. fulfilment of

  1430. those words

  1431. the one that

  1432. you've just

  1433. heard about

  1434. is the

  1435. chosen

  1436. loved

  1437. servant

  1438. of God

  1439. whom I

  1440. will put

  1441. my spirit

  1442. on him

  1443. God

  1444. says

  1445. that was

  1446. the mark

  1447. of God's

  1448. king

  1449. in the

  1450. old testament

  1451. times

  1452. God put

  1453. his spirit

  1454. on the

  1455. king

  1456. and the

  1457. one you've

  1458. just heard

  1459. about

  1460. the one

  1461. who you've

  1462. just read

  1463. about

  1464. he is the

  1465. fulfilment

  1466. of these

  1467. words

  1468. he is the

  1469. king

  1470. God's

  1471. king

  1472. and he

  1473. will

  1474. proclaim

  1475. justice

  1476. to the

  1477. nations

  1478. you see

  1479. he's not

  1480. just

  1481. the lord

  1482. of

  1483. the

  1484. Jews

  1485. or rather

  1486. better

  1487. because he

  1488. is the

  1489. lord of

  1490. the

  1491. sabbath

  1492. because he

  1493. is the

  1494. lord of

  1495. the

  1496. Jewish

  1497. sabbath

  1498. he is

  1499. the

  1500. lord of

  1501. the

  1502. sabbath

  1503. of all

  1504. creation

  1505. justice

  1506. and righteousness

  1507. and true

  1508. judgment

  1509. for the

  1510. nations

  1511. of the

  1512. world

  1513. it's rest

  1514. he's describing

  1515. at last

  1516. that's his

  1517. message

  1518. Jesus came

  1519. to bring

  1520. rest

  1521. but he

  1522. does not

  1523. bring it

  1524. in by

  1525. bullying

  1526. doesn't

  1527. bring it

  1528. in by

  1529. worldly

  1530. power

  1531. but in

  1532. verse 19

  1533. do you see

  1534. he will

  1535. not

  1536. quarrel

  1537. or cry

  1538. out

  1539. no one

  1540. will hear

  1541. his voice

  1542. in the

  1543. streets

  1544. and a

  1545. bruised

  1546. reed

  1547. he will

  1548. not

  1549. break

  1550. and a

  1551. swoldering

  1552. wick

  1553. he will

  1554. not

  1555. snuff

  1556. out

  1557. until he

  1558. brings

  1559. justice

  1560. to

  1561. victory

  1562. do you

  1563. remember

  1564. last week

  1565. I am

  1566. gentle

  1567. and

  1568. lowly

  1569. in heart

  1570. and those

  1571. who come

  1572. to Jesus

  1573. do not

  1574. need to

  1575. fear him

  1576. and in

  1577. his name

  1578. the nations

  1579. will put

  1580. their hope

  1581. that is

  1582. simply

  1583. staggering

  1584. it is

  1585. simply

  1586. staggering

  1587. the earnest

  1588. zeal

  1589. and

  1590. commitment

  1591. and

  1592. drive

  1593. and

  1594. sincerity

  1595. of the

  1596. Pharisees

  1597. for their

  1598. religion

  1599. of the

  1600. Sabbath

  1601. meant

  1602. that they

  1603. could not

  1604. and they

  1605. would not

  1606. recognise

  1607. Jesus

  1608. and they

  1609. judged him

  1610. to be evil

  1611. and that

  1612. is a

  1613. profound

  1614. challenge

  1615. to church

  1616. people

  1617. like you

  1618. and I

  1619. because

  1620. we can

  1621. very easily

  1622. hide behind

  1623. our good

  1624. works

  1625. and our

  1626. keeping

  1627. of God's

  1628. law

  1629. we can

  1630. resent

  1631. others

  1632. that are

  1633. not like

  1634. us

  1635. and we

  1636. can be

  1637. very proud

  1638. of how

  1639. we do

  1640. things

  1641. and tragically

  1642. we can

  1643. miss

  1644. the

  1645. saviour

  1646. and we

  1647. can hate

  1648. the liberation

  1649. and the

  1650. forgiveness

  1651. that he

  1652. brings

  1653. because

  1654. the new

  1655. life

  1656. doesn't

  1657. fit

  1658. with

  1659. our

  1660. systems

  1661. I can

  1662. give you

  1663. easy

  1664. examples

  1665. of how

  1666. the

  1667. church

  1668. of

  1669. Scotland

  1670. where

  1671. you

  1672. saw

  1673. an

  1674. organisation

  1675. which

  1676. once

  1677. believed

  1678. the

  1679. gospel

  1680. a church

  1681. which

  1682. once

  1683. followed

  1684. the

  1685. teaching

  1686. of

  1687. the

  1688. Bible

  1689. and

  1690. gradually

  1691. it

  1692. began

  1693. to

  1694. follow

  1695. man's

  1696. laws

  1697. and

  1698. so

  1699. suddenly

  1700. those

  1701. who

  1702. proclaimed

  1703. the

  1704. gospel

  1705. fully

  1706. well

  1707. were

  1708. brutally

  1709. treated

  1710. it

  1711. we

  1712. talked

  1713. about

  1714. in

  1715. the

  1716. church

  1717. of

  1718. England

  1719. but

  1720. not

  1721. in

  1722. the

  1723. IPC

  1724. but of

  1725. course

  1726. that's

  1727. the

  1728. danger

  1729. isn't it

  1730. you don't

  1731. need to

  1732. worry about

  1733. the

  1734. church

  1735. of

  1736. Scotland

  1737. nor

  1738. the

  1739. church

  1740. of

  1741. England

  1742. where

  1743. do I

  1744. and so

  1745. what you

  1746. and I

  1747. need to

  1748. realise

  1749. is that

  1750. you and

  1751. I

  1752. can be

  1753. caught up

  1754. with

  1755. things

  1756. of

  1757. religion

  1758. and

  1759. church

  1760. life

  1761. and our

  1762. way of

  1763. doing

  1764. things

  1765. and we

  1766. can

  1767. miss

  1768. Jesus

  1769. you can

  1770. seek to

  1771. keep the

  1772. Sabbath

  1773. day

  1774. which I

  1775. encourage you

  1776. to keep

  1777. the

  1778. Sabbath

  1779. day

  1780. to remember

  1781. the

  1782. Sabbath

  1783. day

  1784. to keep

  1785. it

  1786. holy

  1787. but if

  1788. you

  1789. don't

  1790. meet

  1791. with

  1792. Jesus

  1793. you

  1794. miss

  1795. the

  1796. point

  1797. you can

  1798. know the

  1799. Bible

  1800. but miss

  1801. the message

  1802. of the

  1803. Bible

  1804. and so

  1805. this

  1806. morning

  1807. don't

  1808. miss

  1809. the

  1810. point

  1811. do not

  1812. be

  1813. blinded

  1814. to the

  1815. one

  1816. who is

  1817. inviting

  1818. us

  1819. to come

  1820. to him

  1821. and

  1822. promising

  1823. that as

  1824. we come

  1825. to him

  1826. it is

  1827. there

  1828. we will

  1829. find

  1830. rest

  1831. for

  1832. our

  1833. souls

  1834. because

  1835. there is

  1836. none so

  1837. blind

  1838. as

  1839. them that

  1840. will not

  1841. see

  1842. let's

  1843. pray
