  1. In Matthew 12 and verse 22 to 37.

  2. And I want to speak to you this morning on the subject that ministers and preachers don't like to speak on.

  3. ! I want to speak to you on the subject of war.

  4. I'm not the wars that we remember as lots of anniversaries out there at the moment with wars.

  5. But this war has outlived every other conflict through history.

  6. Every other conflict compared to this war has been short-lived.

  7. It has been small-scale.

  8. But this warfare to which Jesus makes reference to in a kind of more expanded way here in Matthew 12 than in any other parts of the Gospel.

  9. This war has been going on since the beginning of time.

  10. And there's been no peace.

  11. And it's intensified undoubtedly at the coming of the Lord Jesus into the world.

  12. And in the course of his ministry.

  13. One day it will end.

  14. It will end at Jesus' return in glory.

  15. And the consummation of God's purposes.

  16. But this war covers the whole earth.

  17. There is no corner of the world where this war is not being fought.

  18. And there is not one of us this morning who is not involved in this war.

  19. Because Jesus said, did you see it in verse 30?

  20. Did you notice that?

  21. That whoever is not with me is against me.

  22. And he who does not gather with me scatters.

  23. That we are engaged this morning in this conflict.

  24. There is absolutely no doubt.

  25. And the only question for you this morning and for me is which side are you on?

  26. And that question is settled, Jesus tells us, by our commitment to him.

  27. He who is not with me is against me.

  28. And at the centre of this war that I'm describing is the church of Jesus Christ.

  29. A little bit later on in Matthew's Gospel in chapter 16, we'll get there in a few months.

  30. At Caesarea Philippi we'll read of Jesus setting out really what in many ways is the agenda for the rest of his ministry.

  31. And what is Jesus' agenda this morning?

  32. He is saying, I will build my church and the gates of hell, the forces of hell will not prevail against it.

  33. Now you notice how Jesus is describing to the disciples what he is going to do in the world.

  34. And beneath all the things that we read in the Gospels about Jesus, this is the underlying reality.

  35. That Jesus first is going to build a church.

  36. That is his fundamental business.

  37. That is his number one priority for which Jesus came.

  38. He came to redeem.

  39. He came to call to himself, to gather to himself a people.

  40. So he says, priority number one, I will build my church.

  41. But secondly, he tells us, doesn't he, in that little statement, that the forces of hell are going to be combined to resist the building of this church.

  42. Of his church.

  43. The gates of hell is a description of the forces of evil and the powers of evil.

  44. And the third thing tells us that resist as they may, they will not prevail.

  45. That resistance by the powers of evil will not be successful.

  46. On this occasion in Matthew 12 and verse 22, Jesus' discussion of this whole area of the ultimate war that is taking place in the world.

  47. That puts all other wars, no matter how horrific, into the shade.

  48. And the occasion which he discusses this is a contrariety with the Pharisees.

  49. You'll remember from the reading that there is a demon-possessed man, who is 22, who is both blind and mute, and was brought to him and he healed him.

  50. So that the man, without ever having seen a speech therapist, spoke.

  51. And without having been to an optometrist, saw.

  52. So wonderfully understated.

  53. And Jesus deals with that man and his demon possession.

  54. And as he does so, there are two opposing views of how he does it.

  55. Two opposing views of how he casts out the demon.

  56. And how he brings the man who could not speak to speak, and the man who could not see to see.

  57. Verse 23, the first response is, and the people hazard a guess, is this the son of David?

  58. That is, is he the one we've been waiting for?

  59. Is he the one who was promised in the Old Testament, and the whole of the Old Testament has been building up to?

  60. Is he the king?

  61. King David's greatest son.

  62. Is he the one descended from the royal line of David?

  63. He is.

  64. You'll remember that when Jesus makes his triumphant journey on that donkey into Jerusalem, what do they say?

  65. They call upon his name, don't they?

  66. And they say, Hosanna to the son of David.

  67. That is, that they recognise at that point they're coming to the Messiah.

  68. And here the people are asking, could it be?

  69. Can this be?

  70. Can this be?

  71. Is this finally the one who we've been waiting for?

  72. Because when the Messiah came, the whole world of the demonic would bow at his word.

  73. And they would be dealt with.

  74. The demons would be dealt with by his authority.

  75. And so in verse 23, the people, all the people were amazed.

  76. And say, can this be the son of David?

  77. But in verse 24, there's a very different reaction.

  78. The Pharisees dismiss what Jesus has done as the work of the prince of demons.

  79. Beelzebul.

  80. It's probably a word for Satan himself.

  81. But when the Pharisees heard about what he'd done to the demon-possessed blind-moot man,

  82. they said he's only done it by the power of Beelzebul, the prince of demons.

  83. The word literally means, I'm kind of lord of the flies.

  84. It's only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow draws out, drives out demons.

  85. Now this passage that was read, I'm sure as you can hear it being read,

  86. raises all sorts of questions.

  87. And it's very easy to miss, I think, the central thrust.

  88. And more important than demon-possession,

  89. and more important, even than I think,

  90. the sin against the Holy Spirit,

  91. against the Holy Spirit, which we read of in verses 31 to 32,

  92. is this central theme of conflict.

  93. The conflict between Christ and Satan.

  94. And I want us to try and grasp four things this morning.

  95. Four things that seem to be dominant in our Lord's teaching.

  96. There's more here than I can deal with.

  97. But four things about this particular fundamental war.

  98. The first is, the competence in it.

  99. Who are the competence in it?

  100. That's a possible way of saying, who's fighting it?

  101. Who's fighting it?

  102. Who are the competence in this war?

  103. Jesus speaks, as he, of two kingdoms sat against each other.

  104. And at the end of verse 26,

  105. when he asks the Pharisees,

  106. he says,

  107. if Satan casts out Satan,

  108. he is divided against himself,

  109. how then will his, Satan's kingdom, stand?

  110. So the first competence

  111. is the kingdom of Satan.

  112. The other is in verse 28.

  113. But if it is by the Spirit of God

  114. that I cast out demons, Jesus says,

  115. then the kingdom of God has come

  116. upon you, or among you.

  117. So you have two spheres of power

  118. and rule.

  119. You have the sphere in which Satan

  120. is recognized as Lord

  121. by his minions.

  122. And then you have the sphere

  123. of the rule of God.

  124. And they are irreconcilably

  125. against each other.

  126. Set against each other.

  127. And these two spheres,

  128. these two kingdoms,

  129. are headed by two princes.

  130. The devil, well, verse 24,

  131. he is the prince of demons.

  132. He uses that language.

  133. And Jesus is, by contrast,

  134. he is the prince and saviour

  135. whom God has highly exalted

  136. according to Acts 5.

  137. And so you have this conflict

  138. between Christ and Satan.

  139. And that is the underlying theme

  140. of the whole of the Gospels.

  141. And it's a vital thing

  142. for you and I to cross.

  143. What is happening

  144. from the very beginning?

  145. What is happening

  146. at the start of Jesus' life?

  147. The book of Revelation

  148. tells us, for example,

  149. that when Herod went

  150. to slaughter the innocents

  151. at the beginning of Jesus' life,

  152. do you remember?

  153. Kill all those baby boys

  154. in Bethlehem.

  155. But what was happening there?

  156. That is an attempt

  157. to destroy the one

  158. who is coming.

  159. That is an attempt

  160. to destroy

  161. the kingdom of God's kingdom.

  162. Why did Jesus come?

  163. Why are we told

  164. Jesus came?

  165. Jesus came to destroy

  166. the works of Satan.

  167. And that is how

  168. the New Testament

  169. describes what Jesus

  170. has come to do.

  171. The Son of God

  172. appeared to destroy

  173. the works of the devil.

  174. And from the beginning,

  175. right from the beginning,

  176. there's this conflict.

  177. So then you come

  178. to the beginning

  179. of Jesus' public ministry

  180. where he's baptised.

  181. And he's driven out

  182. by the Holy Spirit

  183. into the wilderness.

  184. And there he summons

  185. the Prince of Darkness

  186. onto the battlefield

  187. in the wilderness.

  188. And he canvies him

  189. and he beats him.

  190. He experiences

  191. the onslaught

  192. of the devil.

  193. And that is a thread

  194. which goes right

  195. through Jesus' ministry.

  196. That at every crucial point,

  197. what is our Lord doing?

  198. He is engaging

  199. in this ultimate conflict,

  200. this ultimate war.

  201. Between the whole world

  202. of evil

  203. and the kingdom of God.

  204. That's why you find,

  205. for example,

  206. in that 16th chapter

  207. when Jesus says,

  208. I will build my church

  209. and the gates of hell

  210. will not prevail against it.

  211. Almost immediately,

  212. Simon says,

  213. doesn't he,

  214. Jesus,

  215. the way that you're going

  216. to build this kingdom

  217. by dying the death

  218. of a sin bearer

  219. on the cross,

  220. that is not an idea,

  221. Jesus,

  222. you want to entertain.

  223. And Jesus immediately says,

  224. do you remember

  225. what he says?

  226. Get behind me,

  227. Satan.

  228. Because Jesus recognizes

  229. that the real issue

  230. in the whole of his ministry,

  231. and not only so,

  232. it goes into the book of Acts,

  233. doesn't it?

  234. But the real warfare

  235. that the church of Jesus Christ

  236. is involved with

  237. is that against Satan.

  238. So think about chapter 5,

  239. you're about Ammonia,

  240. and Sapphira,

  241. and they imperil the church,

  242. don't they?

  243. The church is at risk.

  244. The church of Jesus Christ

  245. is at risk of being eroded

  246. with deceit,

  247. and lies,

  248. and hypocrisy,

  249. and the apostles say to them,

  250. do you remember what they say?

  251. They say,

  252. why has Satan

  253. filled your hearts

  254. to lies with the Holy Spirit?

  255. And all the way through,

  256. through you discover

  257. that is exactly what is happening.

  258. The competitors

  259. are the kingdom of Satan

  260. and the kingdom of God.

  261. And they are headed up

  262. by two princes,

  263. the prince and saviour,

  264. who is our Lord Jesus Christ,

  265. and the prince of darkness.

  266. And as the shadow

  267. of the cross

  268. comes

  269. into sharper focus,

  270. again,

  271. do you remember,

  272. Jesus speaks of it

  273. to his disciples,

  274. and he says,

  275. the prince of this world

  276. comes

  277. and has nothing in me.

  278. Now the sign

  279. that the kingdom of God

  280. has come

  281. upon them

  282. is that Jesus

  283. is defeating

  284. the minions

  285. and the messengers

  286. of Satan.

  287. It is,

  288. if I drive out demons

  289. by the spirit of God,

  290. verse 28,

  291. it is by the spirit of God

  292. that I cast out demons,

  293. then the kingdom of God

  294. has come upon you.

  295. And so there's not only

  296. two kingdoms,

  297. and not only two princes,

  298. we are every one of us

  299. caught up in this world.

  300. Not one of us.

  301. And I want to press this

  302. home to you this morning,

  303. not one of us

  304. is excluded from it.

  305. You might not want

  306. to accept that.

  307. It is,

  308. I think,

  309. completely absent

  310. in pretty much

  311. nearly every evangelistic book

  312. that is published

  313. at the moment.

  314. But we are either

  315. in one army

  316. or the other.

  317. There is a total

  318. mobilisation

  319. of the world.

  320. And we are either

  321. in Christ's army

  322. or we are in

  323. Satan's army.

  324. Because Jesus says,

  325. he who is not with me

  326. is against me.

  327. There is no middle ground,

  328. there is no sitting

  329. on the fence.

  330. And we are all

  331. of us caught up in it.

  332. Not only,

  333. the second question

  334. that arises,

  335. not only are we,

  336. not only are we

  337. who are the competence,

  338. but secondly,

  339. what is the sphere

  340. of this war?

  341. Where is this war?

  342. What is the sphere

  343. of this war?

  344. Well,

  345. in a more general sense,

  346. it is wherever

  347. the church of Jesus Christ

  348. is being called out

  349. and being built up.

  350. From verse 22,

  351. you have the power

  352. of Christ,

  353. the power of Christ

  354. invading the kingdom

  355. of Satan.

  356. And he calls this man

  357. out of the kingdom

  358. of Satan

  359. into the kingdom

  360. of Christ.

  361. Because Jesus

  362. is here

  363. engaging in his

  364. great work

  365. of creating

  366. a new people

  367. of God.

  368. And the Pharisees

  369. at that point,

  370. when they see

  371. what Jesus has done,

  372. they cry out,

  373. this is the work

  374. of Satan.

  375. You could not get,

  376. could you,

  377. more naked

  378. opposition

  379. than that.

  380. And note,

  381. it is at this point,

  382. it is in the world

  383. of established religion.

  384. it is in the world

  385. of churchy-anity.

  386. You ask any

  387. contemporary

  388. with Jesus

  389. in the street,

  390. where would you find

  391. the world of religion?

  392. And they would have

  393. pointed you

  394. to the Pharisees.

  395. And they would have

  396. said,

  397. they represent

  398. the world of religion.

  399. But yet,

  400. you could not have

  401. found more naked

  402. opposition

  403. and more hostility.

  404. And so let me just

  405. say this in passing,

  406. that the Pharisees

  407. attributing

  408. to Satan

  409. the work of Jesus,

  410. that is the essence

  411. of blasphemy

  412. against the Holy Spirit.

  413. It's specific.

  414. It is looking

  415. at the work

  416. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  417. and what he has done

  418. and what he is doing

  419. and saying,

  420. that is the devil.

  421. And that's the essence

  422. of it.

  423. I might say a word

  424. on that later.

  425. That is the essence

  426. of what we're talking

  427. about when we say

  428. blasphemy

  429. against the Holy Spirit.

  430. Let me apply this.

  431. Where are we likely

  432. to find this opposition

  433. today?

  434. Where are we likely

  435. to find ourselves

  436. engaged in this

  437. kind of warfare?

  438. Well,

  439. wherever we are involved

  440. in seeing the church

  441. of Jesus Christ built,

  442. and I hope you realise

  443. I don't mean a building,

  444. literally,

  445. but seeing the body

  446. of Christ built,

  447. that will certainly

  448. attract opposition.

  449. That's why,

  450. isn't it,

  451. when Jesus,

  452. as it were,

  453. took the field

  454. in his public ministry,

  455. when he was born

  456. and entered it

  457. upon his ministry,

  458. there is this huge

  459. increase

  460. in the activity

  461. of the demonic.

  462. It was because

  463. Jesus

  464. was standing there

  465. as the one

  466. who has come

  467. to destroy

  468. the works

  469. of the devil,

  470. that he drew

  471. out the demonic.

  472. And that is why

  473. there is more

  474. demonic activity

  475. there at that point

  476. in scripture

  477. than at any other time.

  478. let me try

  479. and press in more.

  480. When you're engaged

  481. in building

  482. the church

  483. of Jesus Christ,

  484. wherever,

  485. however,

  486. whenever,

  487. in whatever capacity,

  488. you will find

  489. that people

  490. will be hindered

  491. in coming to

  492. repentance and faith.

  493. You will find

  494. that people

  495. will be hindered

  496. in spiritual growth.

  497. and they will be

  498. hindered

  499. in Christian service.

  500. Do you remember

  501. the Apostle Paul

  502. he writes,

  503. I had intended

  504. to come to you

  505. so often,

  506. but Satan

  507. hindered me,

  508. he said.

  509. You will find

  510. that people

  511. will become

  512. confused

  513. about the truth

  514. and will have

  515. so many

  516. into their minds

  517. doubts about it.

  518. And it's happened

  519. from the very

  520. beginning of time.

  521. You will find

  522. that people

  523. become alienated

  524. from each other

  525. and the conflict

  526. becomes very personal.

  527. I often see

  528. in church life

  529. a petty

  530. and stupid

  531. conflict

  532. between people.

  533. I can tell you

  534. numerous examples,

  535. I can think of a church

  536. I know well,

  537. and the church

  538. suffered great hindrance

  539. and loads of problems

  540. because two leaders

  541. in the church

  542. fell out.

  543. One of them

  544. had discovered

  545. the other one

  546. taking his place

  547. in a particular activity

  548. and he resented

  549. it deeply.

  550. It turned into

  551. turf war,

  552. a power struggle,

  553. resentment.

  554. They avoided

  555. each other,

  556. they spoke politely

  557. or coughing tea,

  558. but they spoke

  559. more often

  560. against one another

  561. behind each other's

  562. back.

  563. They went into

  564. a huff

  565. with each other,

  566. there was a cold

  567. war,

  568. there was no

  569. harsh words,

  570. no public blow up,

  571. just avoidance.

  572. I know it's

  573. possible,

  574. I think,

  575. to go to those

  576. men and say to

  577. them,

  578. will you please,

  579. please,

  580. please grow up

  581. and will you

  582. stop being so

  583. stupid?

  584. But actually

  585. there was something

  586. very sinister

  587. behind it

  588. because what

  589. happened is

  590. it put people

  591. off the church

  592. and it put

  593. people off the

  594. gospel

  595. and it

  596. puts people

  597. off the

  598. Lord Jesus.

  599. And that's

  600. why when you

  601. have little

  602. silly falling

  603. out in church

  604. life,

  605. when you have

  606. that sort of

  607. thing going

  608. on in church

  609. you must realise

  610. it's not just

  611. a human

  612. phenomenon.

  613. Because Paul

  614. says we wage

  615. war not against

  616. flesh and blood

  617. but against

  618. principalities

  619. and powers.

  620. And that is

  621. the kind of

  622. realistic place

  623. where the war

  624. is waged.

  625. And no wonder

  626. Jesus says

  627. he put things

  628. right with your

  629. brother and

  630. sister,

  631. get things

  632. right and

  633. then come

  634. and make

  635. your offering.

  636. You see the

  637. nasty campaign

  638. that's going

  639. on in

  640. Laudet,

  641. the church

  642. where I

  643. preached last

  644. week,

  645. against them

  646. being able

  647. to buy

  648. this land

  649. that has

  650. all the

  651. sophistication

  652. of a

  653. kind of

  654. modern

  655. secular

  656. world.

  657. It's not

  658. very hard

  659. is it when

  660. you come

  661. to a passage

  662. like this

  663. to see

  664. behind that

  665. is a

  666. personal

  667. enemy.

  668. But just

  669. notice a

  670. more specific

  671. help that

  672. Jesus deals

  673. with.

  674. It's worth

  675. studying on

  676. its own

  677. from verses

  678. 25 to

  679. 28.

  680. That Jesus

  681. is saying,

  682. and I think

  683. this is so

  684. helpful,

  685. that it's

  686. often a

  687. battle for

  688. the mind.

  689. So verse

  690. 25,

  691. Jesus

  692. known

  693. their

  694. thoughts.

  695. He said

  696. to them,

  697. every kingdom

  698. divided against

  699. itself is

  700. laid waste,

  701. and no

  702. city or

  703. house divided

  704. itself will

  705. stand.

  706. And if

  707. Satan casts

  708. out Satan,

  709. he is

  710. divided against

  711. himself.

  712. How then

  713. will his

  714. kingdom

  715. stand?

  716. And if

  717. I cast

  718. out demons

  719. by Beelzebub,

  720. by whom

  721. do your

  722. sons cast

  723. them out?

  724. They were

  725. saying,

  726. weren't they,

  727. they were

  728. saying,

  729. you are

  730. casting out

  731. demons by

  732. the power

  733. of Beelzebub.

  734. the prince

  735. of demons.

  736. So it

  737. was the

  738. devil

  739. casting out

  740. the devil.

  741. Jesus

  742. says,

  743. this is

  744. utterly

  745. irrational.

  746. It's like

  747. having a

  748. rowing team

  749. with eight

  750. rowers,

  751. and four

  752. are in the

  753. boat,

  754. four are

  755. rowing one

  756. way,

  757. and the

  758. other four

  759. are rowing

  760. the other

  761. way.

  762. What happens?

  763. It's just

  764. nonsensical,

  765. isn't it?

  766. And so it

  767. is with the

  768. devil,

  769. casting out

  770. the devil.

  771. Jesus

  772. points out

  773. that it

  774. is utterly

  775. irrational.

  776. You see,

  777. the

  778. unreasonableness

  779. of the

  780. whole realm

  781. of Satan's

  782. thinking.

  783. It's so

  784. often striking

  785. isn't it?

  786. How can

  787. the kingdom

  788. divide it

  789. against itself

  790. sound?

  791. If Satan

  792. is casting

  793. out Satan,

  794. then the

  795. whole kingdom

  796. is going

  797. to collapse,

  798. which is

  799. manifestly

  800. not done.

  801. He's pointing

  802. out to them,

  803. isn't he,

  804. the utter

  805. irrationality

  806. of so much

  807. of what the

  808. devil does

  809. in our

  810. mind.

  811. And we

  812. need to be

  813. aware,

  814. don't we?

  815. We need to

  816. be aware

  817. when something

  818. is so

  819. ridiculously

  820. irrational,

  821. like the

  822. transgender

  823. movement,

  824. like so

  825. much of

  826. what we

  827. hear from

  828. the

  829. K-lobby,

  830. we need

  831. to recognise

  832. that behind

  833. that.

  834. It's not

  835. flesh and

  836. blood.

  837. We must

  838. be careful

  839. of the

  840. sinister,

  841. irrational

  842. way the

  843. devil begins

  844. to invade

  845. our minds

  846. and oppress

  847. us.

  848. Here's the

  849. third thing,

  850. competence in

  851. the warfare,

  852. the sphere of

  853. which it's

  854. fought out,

  855. and thirdly,

  856. the strategy

  857. of Christ

  858. in this

  859. war.

  860. It's

  861. compared in

  862. verse 29,

  863. to entering

  864. the house

  865. of a strong

  866. man.

  867. It's a great

  868. illustration.

  869. You've a

  870. strong man,

  871. and then an

  872. even stronger

  873. man who

  874. comes and

  875. ties him

  876. up before

  877. carrying off

  878. all his

  879. possessions.

  880. But when

  881. somebody comes

  882. into a

  883. strong man's

  884. house,

  885. who has

  886. lots of

  887. gold,

  888. and lots

  889. of possessions,

  890. well, the

  891. person breaking

  892. in needs to

  893. be stronger.

  894. Not to

  895. deal first

  896. with the

  897. possessions,

  898. but to

  899. deal with

  900. the strong

  901. man himself.

  902. And Jesus

  903. is clearly

  904. describing himself

  905. as he is

  906. saying,

  907. I'm stronger

  908. than the

  909. strong man.

  910. I'm the

  911. one who

  912. comes in

  913. and I

  914. bind the

  915. strong man

  916. by spoilers

  917. goods.

  918. And that

  919. of course

  920. is in

  921. so many

  922. ways the

  923. way that

  924. Christ deals

  925. with the

  926. kingdom of

  927. evil.

  928. When he's

  929. in the

  930. world,

  931. what is

  932. he doing?

  933. He's not

  934. tinkering with

  935. the odd

  936. demon here

  937. or there.

  938. We've

  939. missed the

  940. point,

  941. and that's

  942. our whole

  943. focus.

  944. No, he

  945. goes to

  946. the

  947. headquarters

  948. of evil,

  949. to the

  950. strong man

  951. himself,

  952. and what

  953. is Jesus

  954. doing on

  955. the cross?

  956. He is

  957. disarming

  958. Satan.

  959. He's

  960. defeating

  961. him by

  962. his death

  963. on Calvary.

  964. So listen

  965. to how

  966. Paul puts

  967. it in

  968. Colossians

  969. 2.15.

  970. He has

  971. disarmed the

  972. powers and

  973. authorities,

  974. and he's

  975. made a

  976. public spectacle

  977. on them,

  978. triumphing over

  979. them by the

  980. cross.

  981. Jesus'

  982. strategy is

  983. to deal

  984. with the

  985. prince of

  986. darkness

  987. himself.

  988. And what

  989. has happened

  990. by the

  991. cross and

  992. resurrection

  993. of our

  994. Lord Jesus

  995. Christ?

  996. Well, it's

  997. this, it's

  998. that Satan

  999. has been

  1000. defeated.

  1001. He's not

  1002. yet been

  1003. destroyed.

  1004. That will

  1005. happen, won't

  1006. it, when

  1007. Revelation 20

  1008. is fulfilled,

  1009. and Satan

  1010. will not only

  1011. be defeated,

  1012. but destroyed

  1013. and cast out

  1014. forever.

  1015. But Satan

  1016. is defeated

  1017. now, and

  1018. we need to

  1019. recognize that.

  1020. There are

  1021. these two

  1022. great errors

  1023. that churches

  1024. make in this

  1025. connection.

  1026. One is the

  1027. error of

  1028. ignoring Satan

  1029. and laughing

  1030. at him.

  1031. You think of

  1032. this kind of

  1033. horn-headed,

  1034. fork-carrying,

  1035. spiky-tailed

  1036. monster that

  1037. really is a

  1038. laughable

  1039. figment of

  1040. imagination,

  1041. a cartoon

  1042. character.

  1043. Will God

  1044. help you

  1045. if you

  1046. think it's

  1047. that?

  1048. But the

  1049. other extreme

  1050. is that there

  1051. are people,

  1052. aren't there,

  1053. they become

  1054. more Satan

  1055. conscious than

  1056. God conscious.

  1057. And the

  1058. whole balance

  1059. and the

  1060. emphasis in the

  1061. New Testament

  1062. is that in

  1063. Jesus Christ

  1064. there is

  1065. victory not

  1066. only over

  1067. Satan,

  1068. but over

  1069. Satan and

  1070. all his

  1071. kingdom.

  1072. There's a

  1073. beautiful

  1074. illustration of

  1075. this in the

  1076. Old Testament

  1077. tucked away.

  1078. Let's think of

  1079. that lovely

  1080. little story of

  1081. Elisha's servant

  1082. at Dothan.

  1083. And Elisha's

  1084. servant comes to

  1085. his master and

  1086. he sees,

  1087. outside their

  1088. little bungalow,

  1089. he sees the

  1090. host of the

  1091. Midianite army

  1092. surrounding the

  1093. whole of the

  1094. mountain.

  1095. He sees the

  1096. enemy, he sees

  1097. the horses and

  1098. the chariots,

  1099. and Elisha

  1100. says to him,

  1101. he says,

  1102. more are they

  1103. that are for

  1104. us than be

  1105. for them.

  1106. Elisha's servant

  1107. goes back out

  1108. and he looks

  1109. back at the

  1110. mountainside and

  1111. it's filled with

  1112. the horses and

  1113. the chariots of

  1114. the enemy and

  1115. he runs back to

  1116. Elisha and he

  1117. says to Elisha,

  1118. will you not

  1119. look at reality,

  1120. man?

  1121. And Elisha

  1122. prays to see,

  1123. he prays,

  1124. Lord,

  1125. open the

  1126. mountain's

  1127. eyes.

  1128. And then

  1129. the young man

  1130. goes back

  1131. outside and

  1132. he opens his

  1133. eyes and

  1134. when he opens

  1135. his eyes,

  1136. well, God

  1137. opens his

  1138. eyes,

  1139. he sees that

  1140. the mountain

  1141. is full of

  1142. the horses

  1143. and the

  1144. chariots of

  1145. the Lord.

  1146. And there

  1147. are more

  1148. of the horses

  1149. and the

  1150. chariots and

  1151. the angels

  1152. of the Lord,

  1153. more of

  1154. they that

  1155. be for us

  1156. than they

  1157. that be for

  1158. them.

  1159. God's victory

  1160. was glorious

  1161. that day.

  1162. The apostle

  1163. John says,

  1164. greater is

  1165. he that

  1166. is in

  1167. you

  1168. than he

  1169. was in

  1170. the

  1171. world.

  1172. Now

  1173. that's the

  1174. strategy of

  1175. Jesus.

  1176. Therefore,

  1177. he's dealt

  1178. with our

  1179. foe,

  1180. with our

  1181. enemy,

  1182. and so

  1183. Martin

  1184. Luther

  1185. says,

  1186. a word

  1187. shall

  1188. quickly

  1189. slay

  1190. him.

  1191. Last

  1192. thing,

  1193. what's the

  1194. final outcome

  1195. of this

  1196. war?

  1197. What's the

  1198. final outcome

  1199. of this

  1200. war?

  1201. Well,

  1202. the indication

  1203. is given

  1204. in this

  1205. illustration

  1206. is given

  1207. in verse

  1208. 22.

  1209. The casting

  1210. out of

  1211. every

  1212. demon.

  1213. The final

  1214. outcome is

  1215. simply

  1216. foreshadowed

  1217. again and

  1218. again through

  1219. the gospel.

  1220. That it

  1221. will be at

  1222. the coming

  1223. of our

  1224. saviour

  1225. when Satan

  1226. will not

  1227. only be

  1228. defeated,

  1229. but destroyed.

  1230. And so

  1231. the last

  1232. issue is,

  1233. I think for

  1234. you and I

  1235. this morning,

  1236. is we've

  1237. got to

  1238. decide

  1239. whose

  1240. side

  1241. you're

  1242. on.

  1243. Because

  1244. whether you

  1245. like it

  1246. or not,

  1247. we're all

  1248. engaged in

  1249. the fight

  1250. this morning.

  1251. how do

  1252. I know

  1253. we're on

  1254. the right

  1255. side?

  1256. Well,

  1257. Jesus

  1258. gives you

  1259. three

  1260. indications.

  1261. Verse 30,

  1262. the first

  1263. is by the

  1264. commitment we

  1265. show.

  1266. The second

  1267. side,

  1268. the sign

  1269. we're on

  1270. the right

  1271. side is in

  1272. verse 33,

  1273. it's the

  1274. fruit that we

  1275. bear.

  1276. And the

  1277. third is in

  1278. verse 34,

  1279. following the

  1280. words that we

  1281. speak.

  1282. Let's take

  1283. them in

  1284. reverse order.

  1285. You will

  1286. know them

  1287. by the

  1288. words they

  1289. speak.

  1290. Verse 34,

  1291. you brood

  1292. of vipers,

  1293. you bunch

  1294. of snakes,

  1295. how can you

  1296. speak good

  1297. when you're

  1298. evil,

  1299. for out of

  1300. the abundance

  1301. of the

  1302. hearts the

  1303. mouth speaks.

  1304. He goes

  1305. on to speak

  1306. about the

  1307. significance

  1308. of the

  1309. tongue,

  1310. and the

  1311. words we

  1312. speak,

  1313. and the

  1314. things we

  1315. say.

  1316. Why?

  1317. Well,

  1318. because the

  1319. words we

  1320. say are

  1321. an index

  1322. of our

  1323. heart.

  1324. And so

  1325. remember that

  1326. every time

  1327. this week,

  1328. when you're

  1329. tempted to

  1330. let a

  1331. careless,

  1332. Christless,

  1333. godless

  1334. word out of

  1335. your lips.

  1336. That by

  1337. your words

  1338. will you

  1339. be

  1340. acquitted,

  1341. and by

  1342. your words

  1343. will you

  1344. be

  1345. condemned.

  1346. Secondly,

  1347. it's a

  1348. fruit we

  1349. bear,

  1350. verse 33,

  1351. I either

  1352. make the

  1353. tree good

  1354. and its

  1355. fruit bad,

  1356. or make

  1357. the tree

  1358. bad and

  1359. its fruit

  1360. bad,

  1361. for the

  1362. tree is

  1363. known by

  1364. its fruit.

  1365. How do

  1366. you know

  1367. inside your

  1368. arm?

  1369. By the

  1370. words you

  1371. speak,

  1372. by the

  1373. fruit you

  1374. bear in

  1375. your life,

  1376. in terms

  1377. of character.

  1378. And here's

  1379. the last

  1380. thing,

  1381. which in a

  1382. sense is

  1383. the first,

  1384. it is by

  1385. your

  1386. commitment

  1387. we

  1388. shall.

  1389. Look at

  1390. verse 30.

  1391. Whoever is

  1392. not with

  1393. me is

  1394. against me,

  1395. and whoever

  1396. does not

  1397. gather with

  1398. me,

  1399. statters.

  1400. And the

  1401. evidence of

  1402. being on

  1403. the Lord's

  1404. side,

  1405. and the

  1406. evidence of

  1407. being on

  1408. the Lord's

  1409. side is

  1410. that we're

  1411. with him.

  1412. And so

  1413. can I

  1414. ask you to

  1415. imagine this

  1416. morning that

  1417. the Lord

  1418. Jesus Christ

  1419. is walking

  1420. around this

  1421. room,

  1422. and he

  1423. goes round

  1424. chair by

  1425. chair,

  1426. through the

  1427. whole of

  1428. the gathering

  1429. and he

  1430. says these

  1431. five words,

  1432. he says,

  1433. with me

  1434. or against

  1435. me.

  1436. He stops

  1437. in every

  1438. chair,

  1439. with me

  1440. or against

  1441. me.

  1442. because that

  1443. is the

  1444. issue,

  1445. nothing

  1446. matters more

  1447. than the

  1448. level of

  1449. our

  1450. commitment

  1451. to Jesus

  1452. Christ.

  1453. Nothing.

  1454. And how

  1455. the war

  1456. goes here

  1457. in this

  1458. place,

  1459. which will

  1460. largely

  1461. depend upon

  1462. that.

  1463. And may

  1464. God help

  1465. us that we

  1466. would have

  1467. such clarity

  1468. in our

  1469. lives,

  1470. that nobody

  1471. could possibly

  1472. mistake which

  1473. side we're

  1474. on.

  1475. Let's

  1476. pray.
