  1. He was about seven years of age, a PK, a preacher's kid, and his father, Moody Stewart, was amongst that galaxy of Scottish Presbyterian ministers, Bannam, Cunningham, the Bonner brothers and McShane, that make the 19th century in Scotland.

  2. He was in such a terrific time. And his father Moody Stewart had a church, and he loved his father, and his father loved him. His name was Kenny, and one day his father was speaking to him and said, you know, there's an aristocrat up there in Inverness, and he's been converted.

  3. And he's starting to preach, and great crowds are coming to hear him. He has an awakening ministry. And lots of people are professing faith through his testimony.

  4. I've asked him to come and preach for us. So within a month or so, Brownlow North came down to the church where Moody Stewart was a minister for so long.

  5. And little boy saw him and listened and was a god and was his biggest supporter and learned so much and came to make a profession, really. It was one of the great influences in his life.

  6. And when, 40 years later, Moody Brownlow North died, he was the choice of everyone to write the biography.

  7. And so, he wrote this volume. And so, he wrote this volume. This is a first edition. Brownlow North. Records and Recollections.

  8. So, a beautiful work. I got it from the library in Hackney of the Black Reformed Church here in London, the only Reformed Church of Caribbean and Nigerians in Europe, I suppose.

  9. And the banner brought it from the library in Hackney of the Black Reformed Church.

  10. The second edition, which was smaller, which was smaller, where those chapters were omitted. But he died doing that.

  11. And then, his family, his wife and children, they finished the second edition, which really is based on that.

  12. And that's also been brought out by Paisley's Press. And that's a photocopy, really, where the banner put a new typeface and so on.

  13. This is John Ritchie. No, that's not the Paisley Press.

  14. But we were, we got to know this name Brownlow North, firstly, by the appearance of this book, The Rich Man and Lazarus.

  15. And these are the sermons he preached in the 1859 revival in Ireland.

  16. And they go through that whole wonderful story of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Great.

  17. It's been reprinted now under the title, The Great Girl Fix, Sermons on the Rich Man and Lazarus.

  18. And when I did the life of, I wrote a book on the life of Ernest Reisinger.

  19. And I once said to him, oh, what was the first ban on the book you came across?

  20. I was in Canary, he said, and I saw The Rich Man and Lazarus.

  21. And that made such an impact on me.

  22. And then also his sermons in Ireland and elsewhere, he taught with them,

  23. Wilt thou go with this man?

  24. And they have been greatly used.

  25. And then there's this publisher.

  26. And he photocopies tracts and treatises.

  27. And he's done at least four of the Brownlow North books.

  28. And you see how he just puts them like this.

  29. And the prodigal son on the way home.

  30. And they are like this.

  31. And they are like this very valuable.

  32. Great stuff, you know what?

  33. He was a colleague of J.C. Ryle.

  34. And the man who published Holiness and Practical Religion and Thoughts on the Gospels.

  35. He also published Ryle and Brownlow North.

  36. And so it's done.

  37. Look at that, for example.

  38. It's done so clumsily, some of them.

  39. That couldn't be avoided.

  40. And there we are.

  41. But it's fair to have them.

  42. So, I read the book called Brownlow North.

  43. And it's coming out.

  44. Joel Beeky is publishing it in the summer.

  45. And that's why I'm fascinated by him and love him.

  46. And I hope I can communicate my enthusiasm.

  47. And the blessing he's been to me, to you.

  48. He was born 207 years ago, 1810.

  49. On January the 6th, it was the year Beethoven wrote his 4th symphony.

  50. And his violin concerto came out that year.

  51. Napoleon was expanding his control of Europe.

  52. And just a couple of months after his birth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born.

  53. And William Pitt the Younger died.

  54. The foundations of Darwin Prison were laid.

  55. It was the year before Chalmers was converted.

  56. And the same year that Andrew Bonner was born.

  57. With his older brother Horatius, two years of age.

  58. And McShane was born two years later.

  59. So, 1810.

  60. To the Reverend Charles Augustus North, his wife Rachel, their only child.

  61. Brownlow.

  62. Born in Chelsea.

  63. In the townhouse of his distinguished grandfather, Brownlow North.

  64. This is the family.

  65. He was a bishop in the Church of England.

  66. And Brownlow was named after that Brownlow.

  67. And he wrote quite a number of Christian books.

  68. And you can go online and you must check that with the dates.

  69. That it isn't, you're not reading the grandfather.

  70. The bishop's brother was Lord North, who was the Prime Minister.

  71. So, we are really in the aristocracy now, aren't we?

  72. One of the most distinguished families in England.

  73. But most important of all, his mother was devoted to Jesus Christ.

  74. She loved him and served him.

  75. Never stopped praying for her son.

  76. He was a precocious child, one of the stories.

  77. You know how stories come from the families.

  78. And then we remember what you said.

  79. When you were a little boy and so on.

  80. We've all got those stories.

  81. And he was five years old and he was walking with his aunt, Lady Lucy North.

  82. And he saw, it was at one of the deer parks of London.

  83. And he said to her, Aunt Lucy, why are you like that big stock over there?

  84. Well, I have no idea, Brownlow.

  85. I don't think I'm a bit like that stock.

  86. Because Aunt Lassie, Aunt Lucy, you're a great deer.

  87. Well, for a six-year-old, he earned half a crop.

  88. He went to Eton at nine and remained there six years, rebellious, disinterested in study.

  89. When he was 19, his father died and he went to Corfu to a theological college.

  90. When he was too well-spirited, he had a personal tutor who was to keep an eye on him and toured Europe with him.

  91. The grand tour of coming out.

  92. The men did it like that and he learned nothing.

  93. Enjoyed dancing, horse riding, the company of women.

  94. One winter, he proposed to no fewer than 19 girls, all of whom accepted his offer of marriage.

  95. He was a terrific horse rider and he became a kind of jockey.

  96. He raced other aristocrats in places like Chatham.

  97. After one of those escapades, he went to Galway on the west coast of Ireland to live quietly for a while.

  98. And he met a clergyman's daughter, Grace Ann Coffey.

  99. And at 18 years of age, he married her.

  100. By the time he was 21, he had two sons to care for.

  101. They had four boys in the end and one died in infancy.

  102. And his income came from a post that his grandfather, the Bishop of Winchester, gave to him.

  103. He was appointed registrar of the Diocese of Winchester and Surrey.

  104. And he took this post very seriously, although it was administered by a couple of lawyers.

  105. His salary was £300 a year, which wasn't enough to keep up his interest in horses and riding.

  106. And so he became a gambler and he lost hundreds of pounds.

  107. And he went to Boulogne to escape those demanding their money.

  108. Another fruitless escapade.

  109. He sent his family back home, his wife and boys, and he joined the Portuguese army.

  110. And that was another day battle.

  111. And so he returned home at 25.

  112. His life was going nowhere.

  113. His debts were covered by this family.

  114. And he decided he would go to Scotland.

  115. To his brother-in-law's home to shoot grouse.

  116. And there he fell in love with Scotland.

  117. Well, who wouldn't?

  118. And there he remained for the rest of his life, virtually becoming a naturalised Scot.

  119. For the next four summers, he spent them shooting.

  120. And the winters in a large house near Aberdeen.

  121. In the winter he raced horses, winning many of the races.

  122. And shooting energetically across the moors of Scotland, breaking the spirit of all who tried to give up with him.

  123. His motto was, every day and all day.

  124. In one season at Glenbucket, he shot 770 brace of grouse in six weeks.

  125. At times, the emptiness of his life would convict him.

  126. And he would kick against the goads of a troubled conscience.

  127. The teaching of his mother.

  128. Her little letters to him.

  129. His knowledge that she was praying for him.

  130. Couldn't be eradicated from his mind.

  131. He had Christian friends.

  132. Christian family.

  133. Who prayed for his conversion.

  134. But there'd be a season of repentance.

  135. And conviction.

  136. And a new determination.

  137. A resolution to turn over a new leaf.

  138. It came to nothing.

  139. Once at a dinner party, he turned to a Christian lady.

  140. The Duchess of Gordon.

  141. And he said to her.

  142. What should a man do who has often prayed to God and never been answered?

  143. And she looked straight back at him.

  144. And she said.

  145. He asked.

  146. And receive not.

  147. Because ye ask amiss.

  148. That ye may consume it upon your lusts.

  149. And it made a real impact.

  150. The ministry of rebuke.

  151. What a ministry it is.

  152. When his son Brownlow.

  153. The third Brownlow.

  154. The grandfather.

  155. The father of the son.

  156. Became very ill.

  157. He was subdued.

  158. And the Duchess of Gordon gave his wife a book to read to the boy.

  159. And he also read it.

  160. And it was a fine Christian book.

  161. And he was convicted.

  162. Well then he turned over a new leaf.

  163. And he trained for the ministry.

  164. So he went to.

  165. Magdalene Warden Hall.

  166. In Oxford.

  167. And he took it very seriously.

  168. He studied church history.

  169. And the apologias that were very popular at that time.

  170. And.

  171. In his books later on.

  172. When he became a Christian.

  173. And these tracts and books were written.

  174. His name was given.

  175. And then.

  176. Magdalene Hall.

  177. Oxford.

  178. Registrar of the Diocese of Winchester and Surrey.

  179. So.

  180. Should he go into the ministry.

  181. He went to see the Bishop of Lincoln.

  182. And.

  183. Someone had written to the Bishop of Lincoln.

  184. And.

  185. And described.

  186. His.

  187. Excesses.

  188. His.

  189. Wildness of life.

  190. His.

  191. Partying.

  192. And he went to see the Bishop.

  193. And he was laid back.

  194. And cool.

  195. And there didn't seem to be any evidence of a call.

  196. And the Bishop said to him.

  197. If I were in your position.

  198. And you were in mine.

  199. Would you ordain me?

  200. No I wouldn't.

  201. My Lord.

  202. He said.

  203. Well.

  204. What was his position at that time?

  205. He.

  206. Had a sense of guilt.

  207. And shame.

  208. He knew he was under the wrath of God.

  209. But there's a difference between.

  210. Acknowledging one as a sinner.

  211. And experiencing.

  212. A divine change of heart.

  213. And his training in Oxford.

  214. And his awakened conviction of personal sin.

  215. Was true.

  216. But he says.

  217. I never apprehended Christ.

  218. I never accepted him.

  219. As my sin bearer.

  220. And my righteousness.

  221. So he felt like a man.

  222. Who had cleaned.

  223. And garnished.

  224. His house.

  225. And driven out the demon.

  226. Who lived there.

  227. But he had opened the doors.

  228. Of every room.

  229. And welcomed the Lord Jesus.

  230. In.

  231. And the demons were hovering.

  232. Waiting to return.

  233. In legion force.

  234. He later said to a Christian woman.

  235. The house was swept.

  236. And garnished.

  237. But empty.

  238. And the last state of that man.

  239. Was worse than the first.

  240. Think of it.

  241. Think of the love.

  242. Of Jesus.

  243. That came to me.

  244. In spite of that.

  245. So.

  246. His mind was.

  247. Filled with the theology.

  248. That he learned.

  249. And the books he read.

  250. In Oxford.

  251. And it was a challenge.

  252. For him.

  253. To.

  254. Give up the racing.

  255. And the.

  256. Jockeying.

  257. And the shooting of grouse.

  258. And the fishing.

  259. He knew.

  260. Evidences of religion.

  261. Paley.

  262. And Butler.

  263. The two.

  264. Standard.

  265. Defenses.

  266. Evidentialism.

  267. And that was useful.

  268. For him.

  269. And.

  270. When he.

  271. Preached.

  272. After his conversion.

  273. The.

  274. The information.

  275. That he had learned.

  276. At that time.

  277. It wasn't.

  278. Wasted.

  279. He never had to.

  280. Withdraw words.

  281. Publicly.

  282. From the very beginning.

  283. Of his preaching.

  284. That he had made mistakes.

  285. And.

  286. He.

  287. Didn't understand.

  288. The gospel.

  289. And the articles.

  290. Of religion.

  291. And so on.

  292. And.

  293. When.

  294. He was accepted.

  295. In the free church.

  296. And set apart.

  297. Almost unanimously.

  298. To be an evangelist.

  299. For them.

  300. His.

  301. Proponents.

  302. On the floor.

  303. Of general.

  304. As family.

  305. Could.

  306. Get up.

  307. And they could say.

  308. He studied.

  309. Theology.

  310. In Oxford.

  311. For two years.

  312. But.

  313. With.

  314. No doors opening.

  315. He drifted.

  316. Back to his old way.

  317. Of like.

  318. 35 years of age.

  319. He walked.

  320. The moors of Scotland.

  321. Around Inverness.

  322. Gun in hand.

  323. Month after month.

  324. Increasingly.

  325. He forgot God.

  326. For three years.

  327. He shot grouse.

  328. In the summer.

  329. Raised horses.

  330. In the winter.

  331. His children.

  332. Got married.

  333. When he was 40.

  334. He settled in a large house.

  335. In Dallas.

  336. Near Inverness.

  337. And there.

  338. He continued.

  339. A life without God.

  340. It was.

  341. Unhelpful.

  342. To any.

  343. Evangelical.

  344. Christian.

  345. Any moral.

  346. Person.

  347. None of his.

  348. Friends.

  349. Cared anything.

  350. For God.

  351. And yet.

  352. He hated.

  353. Foul conversation.

  354. He could never stay.

  355. In a room.

  356. With a man.

  357. Who used.

  358. Blasphemies.

  359. But on the Lord's day.

  360. Get on his horse.

  361. With his friends.

  362. And they would.

  363. Ride along the lanes.

  364. They would pass people.

  365. Who were.

  366. On their way to church.

  367. To worship.

  368. And he would spend.

  369. His Sundays.

  370. Fishing for salmon.

  371. And this is how he described.

  372. This period of his life.

  373. For 44 years.

  374. Of my life.

  375. My object.

  376. Was to pass time.

  377. Pleasantly.

  378. So long as the days.

  379. Were spent.

  380. Agreeably.

  381. I was satisfied.

  382. During those years.

  383. Whatever harm.

  384. I may have done.

  385. I don't believe.

  386. I ever did.

  387. Any real good.

  388. To any human being.

  389. From 1835.

  390. Until 1854.

  391. With the exception.

  392. About three years.

  393. The greater part.

  394. Of my life.

  395. Was spent.

  396. In Scotland.

  397. I rented.

  398. Moors.

  399. And fisheries.

  400. And my greatest.

  401. Idea.

  402. Of pleasure.

  403. Was to shoot grouse.

  404. And catch salmon.

  405. I believe.

  406. At the different.

  407. Shooting quarters.

  408. I rented.

  409. I treated.

  410. The poor.

  411. With.

  412. An average.

  413. Liberality.

  414. Contributing.

  415. To their different.

  416. Collections.

  417. What I fancy.

  418. Would be expected.

  419. And on five shillings.

  420. When an old woman.

  421. Lost a cow.

  422. All I consider.

  423. My great act.

  424. Of kindness.

  425. Of the people.

  426. And that.

  427. For which I expected.

  428. Them to be most thankful.

  429. Was to give them.

  430. At the end.

  431. Of the shooting season.

  432. A dance.

  433. And supper.

  434. To this party.

  435. Of my old.

  436. Tenants.

  437. In the neighborhood.

  438. Where their wives.

  439. And their daughters.

  440. Were invited.

  441. The gamekeepers.

  442. The gillies.

  443. The shopkeepers.

  444. Of the village.

  445. My old servants.

  446. All in sundry.

  447. And every acquaintance.

  448. That any of these.

  449. Like to bring.

  450. They were very merry.

  451. Late in the evening.

  452. Some were very noisy.

  453. Early in the morning.

  454. I've seen some.

  455. Very tipsy.

  456. It would be daylight.

  457. When a number of both sexes.

  458. Gave me three cheers.

  459. And thank me for my kindness.

  460. They would cry.

  461. God bless you.

  462. And walk home.

  463. They thanked me for my kindness.

  464. Was it kindness?

  465. They cried.

  466. God bless me.

  467. Could either they.

  468. Or I.

  469. Expect God's blessing.

  470. On.

  471. Such a meeting.

  472. It's true.

  473. It was intended kindly.

  474. And as a return for kindness.

  475. To those who had taken care of my shooting.

  476. And preserved my game.

  477. And I knew no better way.

  478. Of saying.

  479. I'm obliged to you.

  480. Yet.

  481. Again.

  482. I ask.

  483. Was it kindness?

  484. In the end of 1854.

  485. It pleased God.

  486. To bring home.

  487. With power.

  488. To my heart.

  489. It would be.

  490. Profit.

  491. It would profit.

  492. Me.

  493. Nothing.

  494. If I should gain.

  495. The whole world.

  496. And lose my own soul.

  497. Well then.

  498. How did that.

  499. Great truth come to him.

  500. With convicting.

  501. And life transforming.

  502. Energy.

  503. He was blessed.

  504. With his mother.

  505. Still alive.

  506. More spiritually minded.

  507. And prayerful.

  508. Than ever.

  509. There was his aunt.

  510. Miss Gordon.

  511. Of Ward House.

  512. In Elgin.

  513. Never stopped praying for him.

  514. And thinking.

  515. The potential he had.

  516. And the wasted life.

  517. And one day.

  518. He heard a sermon.

  519. On let me die.

  520. The death.

  521. Of the righteous.

  522. And she came.

  523. She.

  524. Hearing it.

  525. Brought him to mind.

  526. And she remembered.

  527. Much of the sermon.

  528. She got home.

  529. And she said.

  530. Dear Brownlow.

  531. I was in church today.

  532. And this was the text.

  533. We heard.

  534. And you know.

  535. This is what the preacher said.

  536. He read the letter.

  537. And he replied to her.

  538. Dear auntie.

  539. To die the death.

  540. Of the righteous.

  541. We must live the life.

  542. Of the righteous.

  543. I'm not prepared.

  544. To do that yet.

  545. And he would.

  546. Later on.

  547. When he was a preacher.

  548. He would.

  549. Tell people.

  550. That he had written that.

  551. And he would say.

  552. I said to God.

  553. I must have.

  554. My sins.

  555. I know the consequences.

  556. But I accept them.

  557. I accept.

  558. Damnation.

  559. As my portion.

  560. I said that.

  561. And so.

  562. His life continued.

  563. Until he was.

  564. Forty five years of age.

  565. Until the autumn.

  566. Of 1854.

  567. And in that summer.

  568. He was slaughtering.

  569. Grouse.

  570. As if there was a famine.

  571. In the land.

  572. And he was responsible.

  573. For feeding in Venice.

  574. One day.

  575. He and his son.

  576. Brunner North Junior.

  577. Competed with one another.

  578. And.

  579. He killed.

  580. Fifty brace.

  581. And a single bird.

  582. While his son.

  583. Killed.

  584. Fifty one brace.

  585. Hundred and two.

  586. Four drugs.

  587. But the Christians.

  588. In the family.

  589. Never stopped praying for him.

  590. They never gave up.

  591. For him.

  592. And.

  593. There was an increased.

  594. Activity.

  595. And an increased.

  596. Heaviness.

  597. About him.

  598. And a burden.

  599. And they would say.

  600. We must keep praying.

  601. Come on.

  602. Keep praying now.

  603. Don't stop praying.

  604. He visited his aunt.

  605. In Elgin.

  606. And.

  607. She would say to him.

  608. How are things.

  609. Between you and God.

  610. And he said.

  611. I'm always saying things to you.

  612. That make you think.

  613. I'm promising.

  614. Spiritually.

  615. And giving you the impression.

  616. That I'm better.

  617. Than I really am.

  618. But one day.

  619. He was weary.

  620. Of shooting.

  621. And weary.

  622. Of fishing.

  623. And he spoke to her.

  624. And he said.

  625. I'm going to see Blackwell.

  626. Blackwell was his cousin.

  627. He was an.

  628. Anglican evangelical.

  629. Preacher.

  630. And he liked him.

  631. And he would call.

  632. And see him.

  633. And he was so patient.

  634. And kind.

  635. With him.

  636. And he was.

  637. A man.

  638. Who explained to him.

  639. The grace of God.

  640. You know.

  641. We.

  642. Deserve eternal death.

  643. Because we're sinners.

  644. But.

  645. Jesus Christ.

  646. Because.

  647. He loved us.

  648. Died for us.

  649. He took our guilt.

  650. And gave us.

  651. His righteousness.

  652. Not because of our deserving.

  653. But all because of what Jesus Christ has done.

  654. And salvation is offered to us.

  655. In.

  656. In the gospel.

  657. And that was the message.

  658. That he always heard.

  659. From Blackwell.

  660. And he was drawn to him.

  661. He would come back to him.

  662. He wouldn't see him for six months.

  663. And then he'd go home.

  664. Blackwell always knew.

  665. What his duty was.

  666. To speak to him.

  667. Of Jesus Christ.

  668. Soon after.

  669. He visited.

  670. His aunt.

  671. In Elgin.

  672. She had a.

  673. Letter.

  674. The post.

  675. Was very efficient.

  676. You could send a letter.

  677. And it would.

  678. Be received.

  679. And.

  680. You could.

  681. Get a response.

  682. By the afternoon.

  683. The post.

  684. Was.

  685. Wonderful.

  686. And.

  687. His wife.

  688. Wrote to the aunt.

  689. And said.

  690. He's ill.

  691. And.

  692. It's as much.

  693. A state of soul.

  694. As of body.

  695. And.

  696. In fact.

  697. Bromelow North.

  698. Had told his wife.

  699. Right to auntie.

  700. To auntie.

  701. Will she come and visit me.

  702. It was the favorite time.

  703. November.

  704. In 1854.

  705. He was speaking at the Christian Union.

  706. At Edinburgh University.

  707. A few years later.

  708. And this is how he described.

  709. What occurred.

  710. He pleased God.

  711. In the month of November.

  712. 1854.

  713. One night.

  714. When I was sitting.

  715. Playing at cards.

  716. To make me concerned.

  717. About.

  718. My soul.

  719. The instrument used.

  720. Was a sensation.

  721. Of sudden illness.

  722. Which led me to think.

  723. That I was going to die.

  724. I said to my son.

  725. I'm a dead man.

  726. Take me upstairs.

  727. As soon as this was done.

  728. I threw myself down.

  729. Along the bed.

  730. My first thought was.

  731. Now.

  732. What.

  733. Has.

  734. 44 years.

  735. Of following.

  736. The devices.

  737. Of your own heart.

  738. Profited you.

  739. In a few minutes.

  740. I shall be in hell.

  741. And what good.

  742. Will all those things.

  743. Do me.

  744. For which.

  745. I have sold.

  746. My soul.

  747. And at that moment.

  748. I was constrained.

  749. To pray.

  750. It was.

  751. The prayer.

  752. Of a coward.

  753. A cry for mercy.

  754. I wasn't sorry.

  755. For what I'd done.

  756. But I was afraid.

  757. Of hell.

  758. And yet.

  759. There was still.

  760. Something.

  761. That stopped me.

  762. Getting on my knees.

  763. To pray.

  764. Because the maid servant.

  765. Came in.

  766. To clear out.

  767. The ash.

  768. From the fire.

  769. And lay.

  770. A new fire.

  771. And you know.

  772. If your father did this.

  773. When you were a boy.

  774. He'd put the ash.

  775. In the ash bucket.

  776. And he'd put.

  777. The unburned.

  778. Coke.

  779. On one side.

  780. And.

  781. And then he'd lay.

  782. Finally.

  783. Then.

  784. Paper.

  785. And sticks.

  786. On top of it.

  787. And the coal.

  788. On top of it.

  789. And he'd have a blower.

  790. That he'd put.

  791. And he'd light.

  792. The paper underneath.

  793. And seal it.

  794. With a newspaper.

  795. So that there'd be a draft.

  796. I sold my father to it.

  797. For years.

  798. And then he'd go over and wash.

  799. And he'd shave.

  800. And my mother would be.

  801. Alongside him.

  802. And she would be.

  803. Cooking eggs and bacon.

  804. Which we always.

  805. We never had.

  806. Cereals.

  807. We had eggs and bacon.

  808. Every day.

  809. And then the fire would.

  810. So this woman.

  811. She took ages.

  812. And he wanted to get on his knees.

  813. And cried to God.

  814. For mercy.

  815. I didn't believe.

  816. At that time.

  817. I had ten minutes to live.

  818. And I knew.

  819. There was no.

  820. Possible hope for me.

  821. But in the mercy of God.

  822. And if I didn't seek that mercy.

  823. I couldn't expect to have it.

  824. Yet such was the nature of my heart.

  825. And of my spirit.

  826. Within me.

  827. That was a balance with me.

  828. A thing.

  829. To turn this way.

  830. Or that.

  831. I couldn't tell how.

  832. Whether I should wait.

  833. Till the woman.

  834. Left the room.

  835. Or whether I would fall on my knees.

  836. And cry for mercy.

  837. Before that girl.

  838. I believe it was.

  839. The turning point.

  840. With me.

  841. I believe.

  842. If then.

  843. I had resisted.

  844. The Holy Spirit.

  845. Of course.

  846. Who can say.

  847. Who can limit.

  848. The Holy Ghost.

  849. But my belief is that.

  850. It would have been.

  851. Once too often.

  852. But I wasn't held back.

  853. I got on my knees.

  854. With her.

  855. Lighting the fire.

  856. And I prayed.

  857. Although.

  858. I'm not that I should be.

  859. Yet I am.

  860. This day.

  861. What I am.

  862. Which at least.

  863. Is not what I was.

  864. I mention this.

  865. Because I believe.

  866. Every man.

  867. In his life.

  868. Has a turning point.

  869. I believe.

  870. That the sin.

  871. Against the Holy Ghost.

  872. Is grieving.

  873. That spirit.

  874. Once too often.

  875. So.

  876. The servant.

  877. The servant.

  878. I went downstairs.

  879. And said.

  880. He's praying.

  881. He's on his knees.

  882. He's praying.

  883. So.

  884. They all gathered.

  885. For breakfast.

  886. In the morning.

  887. And.

  888. He joined them.

  889. And.

  890. He took.

  891. Pen.

  892. To paper.

  893. And he wrote.

  894. To everybody.

  895. Everyone.

  896. He wrote letters to.

  897. He wrote a letter.

  898. To them.

  899. And announced.

  900. I've become.

  901. A Christian.

  902. And.

  903. At 11 o'clock.

  904. His auntie.

  905. Miss Gordon.

  906. Arrived.

  907. And she found him.

  908. Writing these letters.

  909. And he was quiet.

  910. And he was gentle.

  911. And at 8 o'clock.

  912. He joined.

  913. The family.

  914. In worship.

  915. And he read.

  916. A portion of scripture.

  917. And he made a few comments.

  918. About it.

  919. No hysteria.

  920. He had found.

  921. Peace with God.

  922. Through Jesus Christ.

  923. And.

  924. He just.

  925. Spent.

  926. The days.

  927. In much prayer.

  928. And then.

  929. He would stretch out.

  930. On.

  931. The carpet.

  932. With his mouth.

  933. Next to the rug.

  934. Longing.

  935. That God.

  936. Would.

  937. Be hearing him.

  938. And would listen to him.

  939. And answer.

  940. To him.

  941. He stopped.

  942. He stopped smoking.

  943. His cigars.

  944. Immediately.

  945. He'd been.

  946. Addicted.

  947. To nicotine.

  948. He couldn't.

  949. Play billiards again.

  950. For months.

  951. He would read.

  952. Nothing.

  953. But the bible.

  954. The crimean war.

  955. Was going on.

  956. He wouldn't.

  957. Read the newspapers.

  958. With a change.

  959. In him.

  960. Was staggering.

  961. And you were fearful.

  962. Then.

  963. Things.

  964. That are human.

  965. Are not sinful.

  966. Will be.

  967. Given up.

  968. Whereas you want them.

  969. To be.

  970. your tools

  971. but

  972. there will be an

  973. anknunfunkspunk

  974. a point of contact

  975. that there will be with

  976. other people

  977. his friends

  978. heard the Jews with great

  979. skepticism

  980. they suggested he had a breakdown

  981. it was temporary excitement

  982. it was soon get over

  983. he withdrew from hunting

  984. and racing and the newspapers

  985. reported this and journalists wrote

  986. ah it's for a wager

  987. he's made a bet that he could

  988. gather a thousand people

  989. to listen to him

  990. do you know how Christian people are

  991. when a

  992. notable figure, a media star

  993. a sportsman, a

  994. singer

  995. professors faith in Christ

  996. Saul of

  997. Tarsus conversion

  998. the early church said

  999. if there's anybody

1000. who would be the last

  1001. to be converted

  1002. it's Saul of Tarsus

1003. and so when he was converted

  1004. they were very uncertain

  1005. he wrote in

  1006. Brownlow North

  1007. wrote in the margin

  1008. it was by black

  1009. 721

  1010. so it was with

  1011. Brownlow North

  1012. and no wonder

1013. and yet for all that

  1014. he does believe

  1015. that the Lord

  1016. has spoken to him

1017. to him be the gratitude

  1018. and the glory

  1019. and then along

  1020. the words

  1021. of Tarsus

  1022. to Paul

  1023. Acts 26-24

  1024. that Paul was beside

  1025. himself

  1026. and mad

  1027. Christians in all ages

  1028. have been called mad

1029. but who was the most mad

  1030. Paul

  1031. or Tarsus

  1032. but the Christians

  1033. who knew him

  1034. his mother

  1035. and his family

  1036. his aunt

  1037. his cousin

  1038. the evangelical

  1039. vicar

  1040. those who believed

  1041. in the triumph

  1042. of grace

  1043. and regeneration

  1044. by the Holy Spirit

  1045. they stood by him

  1046. and they encouraged

  1047. him to visit

  1048. some old friends

  1049. who were not

  1050. Christians

  1051. and that he could

  1052. write to them

1053. and go and see them

  1054. and talk to them

  1055. he wouldn't travel

  1056. on the Sabbath

  1057. he had been kept

1058. twice in the free church

  1059. in Inverness

  1060. on the boat

  1061. on the Caledonian

  1062. Canal

  1063. on the Monday

  1064. he sailed to

  1065. Fort William

  1066. and the steward

  1067. recognised him

  1068. was amazed

  1069. of the difference

  1070. appearance

  1071. that he had

  1072. going north

  1073. on that boat

  1074. a few months earlier

  1075. he had consumed

  1076. glass after glass

  1077. of scotch

  1078. but on this journey

  1079. he was

  1080. a broken man

  1081. he was leaning

  1082. on his staff

  1083. he was deeply

  1084. serious and thoughtful

  1085. he didn't slip

  1086. easily

  1087. into

  1088. a religious

  1089. laid back

  1090. frame of mind

  1091. at all

  1092. the fiery dogs

  1093. were enormous

  1094. he was becoming

  1095. acquainted

  1096. with the deceitfulness

  1097. of his own heart

  1098. he was striving

1099. to enter the narrow gate

1100. and walk on the narrow path

  1101. and mortified

  1102. by the Holy Spirit

  1103. remaining sin

1104. and God was preparing him

  1105. for

  1106. this extraordinary future

  1107. that lay before him

  1108. he came

  1109. to

  1110. growing assurance

  1111. day by day

  1112. he could

  1113. appropriate

  1114. Jesus Christ

  1115. as his Lord

  1116. and Saviour

  1117. at the beginning

  1118. of every day

  1119. and keep

  1120. in communion

  1121. with him

  1122. through those

  1123. days

  1124. he told a friend

  1125. he couldn't pray

  1126. that Jesus Christ

  1127. would come again

  1128. soon

  1129. you know

  1130. it was a very

  1131. popular

  1132. time

  1133. for speculation

  1134. eschatological

  1135. speculation

  1136. about the coming

  1137. of Christ

  1138. he said

  1139. I can't pray

  1140. that Jesus

  1141. I don't want

  1142. that

  1143. I'm afraid

  1144. we'll ask

  1145. God

  1146. to make you

  1147. want it

  1148. his friend

  1149. said

  1150. and that

  1151. helped him

  1152. he thought

  1153. of the atonement

  1154. what has

  1155. Christ accomplished

  1156. then

  1157. has he accomplished

  1158. for me

  1159. in his death

  1160. that I

  1161. should be

  1162. afraid

  1163. of

  1164. seeing

  1165. Jesus

  1166. Christ

  1167. haven't

  1168. all my

  1169. sins

  1170. been laid

  1171. on the

  1172. Redeemer

  1173. and when

  1174. he returns

  1175. doesn't he

  1176. return

  1177. as

  1178. my Saviour

  1179. and I will

  1180. be like

  1181. him

  1182. so he

  1183. began to

  1184. pray

  1185. come

  1186. Lord

  1187. Jesus

  1188. come

  1189. Lord

  1190. Jesus

  1191. the first

  1192. Christmas

  1193. as a

  1194. disciple

  1195. 1854

  1196. we spent

  1197. with his

  1198. mother

  1199. he stayed

  1200. with her

  1201. for a

  1202. week

  1203. the joy

  1204. was full

  1205. as a much

  1206. grateful

  1207. only child

  1208. who had

  1209. been dead

  1210. was alive

  1211. again

  1212. who had

  1213. been lost

  1214. was found

  1215. and in

  1216. the next

  1217. months

  1218. he came

  1219. to a

  1220. clearer

  1221. understanding

  1222. of the

  1223. Christian

  1224. faith

  1225. he learned

  1226. to harm

  1227. the dear

  1228. life

  1229. on the

  1230. naked

  1231. wood

  1232. of God

  1233. he learned

  1234. the blood

  1235. of Christ

  1236. the atonement

  1237. of Jesus

  1238. Christ

  1239. the all

  1240. sufficient

  1241. answer

  1242. for the

  1243. past years

  1244. of wickedness

  1245. and emptiness

  1246. he had

  1247. many

  1248. difficulties

  1249. but going

  1250. to the

  1251. Bible

  1252. he found

  1253. peace

  1254. again and

  1255. again

  1256. he said

  1257. aloud

  1258. to himself

  1259. do you

  1260. think

  1261. by your

  1262. own

  1263. reason

  1264. or deep

  1265. thinking

  1266. that you

  1267. can find

  1268. out

  1269. God

  1270. or know

  1271. Christ

  1272. better

  1273. than

  1274. the Bible

  1275. can teach

  1276. you

  1277. how to

  1278. know

  1279. him

  1280. if you

  1281. can't

  1282. then why

  1283. are you

  1284. perplexing

  1285. your brain

  1286. with worse

  1287. than useless

  1288. speculation

  1289. why aren't

  1290. you learning

  1291. from scripture

  1292. and holding

  1293. on to what

  1294. you've got

  1295. you must

  1296. either make

  1297. a God

  1298. and religion

  1299. for yourself

  1300. and stand

  1301. and fall

  1302. entirely

  1303. and eternally

  1304. on the God

  1305. you've made

  1306. or

  1307. you must

  1308. take the

  1309. religion

  1310. of Jesus

  1311. Christ

  1312. as revealed

  1313. to you

  1314. in his word

  1315. you can't

  1316. take a little

  1317. of God's

  1318. teaching

  1319. and a little

  1320. of your own

  1321. you can't

  1322. believe

  1323. on the Lord

  1324. Jesus Christ

  1325. and the wisdom

  1326. of your own

  1327. heart

  1328. at the same

  1329. time

  1330. choose

  1331. that

  1332. now

  1333. and forever

  1334. by which

  1335. you will

  1336. stand

  1337. or fall

  1338. and he

  1339. put his

  1340. hand

  1341. on the

  1342. open

  1343. Bible

  1344. and he

  1345. said

  1346. God

  1347. helping

  1348. me

  1349. I

  1350. will

  1351. stand

  1352. or fall

  1353. by the

  1354. Lord

  1355. Jesus

  1356. Christ

  1357. I will

  1358. put my

  1359. trust

  1360. in his

  1361. truth

  1362. and in

  1363. his

  1364. teaching

  1365. as I

  1366. find it

  1367. in the

  1368. written

  1369. word

  1370. of God

  1371. as sure

  1372. as the

  1373. Lord

  1374. Jesus

  1375. Christ

  1376. is the

  1377. truth

  1378. I

  1379. must be

  1380. forgiven

  1381. and

  1382. saved

  1383. and that

  1384. then

  1385. established

  1386. his

  1387. attitude

  1388. from that

  1389. time on

  1390. to his

  1391. much

  1392. read

  1393. Bible

  1394. and much

  1395. written

  1396. Bible

  1397. how he

  1398. fed

  1399. on it

  1400. three months

  1401. after

  1402. Christmas

  1403. he and his

  1404. wife became

  1405. members of

  1406. the congregation

  1407. of Donald

  1408. Gordon

  1409. in the

  1410. free church

  1411. in Elgin

  1412. you can

  1413. still see

  1414. the same

  1415. building

  1416. it stands

  1417. today

  1418. and he

  1419. sat under

  1420. an

  1421. expository

  1422. evangelistic

  1423. preaching

  1424. from that

  1425. ministry

  1426. he was

  1427. going

  1428. through

  1429. Mark's

  1430. gospel

  1431. and his

  1432. assurance

  1433. grew as he

  1434. heard the

  1435. word of

  1436. God preached

  1437. he was a

  1438. very imposing

  1439. presence

  1440. he sat

  1441. in the

  1442. pew

  1443. there

  1444. and the

  1445. marks

  1446. of his

  1447. past

  1448. encanglements

  1449. in the

  1450. world

  1451. were on

  1452. him

  1453. and an

  1454. air of

  1455. unrest

  1456. of strength

  1457. of hungry

  1458. looks

  1459. as he

  1460. gazed

  1461. at the

  1462. preacher

  1463. his eyes

  1464. fixed

  1465. and when

  1466. guest preachers

  1467. came near

  1468. to be

  1469. warned

  1470. about

  1471. this

  1472. man

  1473. built

  1474. like an

  1475. ox

  1476. who was

  1477. there

  1478. just

  1479. would

  1480. gaze

  1481. and gaze

  1482. he does

  1483. that to

  1484. us all

  1485. he said

  1486. not just

  1487. to you

  1488. and his

  1489. minister then

  1490. at that time

  1491. like we do

  1492. there are

  1493. times when

  1494. we give up

  1495. our regular

  1496. visitation of

  1497. people

  1498. and there are

  1499. individuals

  1500. and we

  1501. have to

  1502. spend

  1503. hours

  1504. with

  1505. them

  1506. and his

  1507. pastor

  1508. spent time

  1509. with him

  1510. reading the

  1511. bible

  1512. praying

  1513. and he

  1514. never lost

  1515. his wonder

  1516. that the

  1517. god of

  1518. heaven

  1519. should have

  1520. mercy

  1521. on a

  1522. prodigal

  1523. like him

  1524. and

  1525. fiery

  1526. dance

  1527. like the

  1528. thorn in

  1529. the flesh

  1530. for Paul

  1531. as a

  1532. counterbalance

  1533. to

  1534. the one

  1535. voice

  1536. whispering

  1537. in one

  1538. ear

  1539. you're a

  1540. great man

  1541. Paul

  1542. you're a

  1543. wonderful

  1544. man

  1545. and in

  1546. the other

  1547. ear

  1548. you're a

  1549. wicked

  1550. man

  1551. Paul

  1552. you're a

  1553. cruel

  1554. man

  1555. look what

  1556. you've

  1557. done

  1558. Paul

  1559. and so

  1560. he had

  1561. whisperings

  1562. there's no

  1563. god

  1564. it's a

  1565. fantasy

  1566. there's no

  1567. god

  1568. there's no

  1569. god

  1570. it came

  1571. when he

  1572. got on

  1573. his knees

  1574. to pray

  1575. it came

  1576. at the

  1577. lord's

  1578. table

  1579. it came

  1580. under the

  1581. word of

  1582. the means

  1583. of grace

  1584. and then

  1585. he would

  1586. have to

  1587. say

  1588. god

  1589. is

  1590. god

  1591. is

  1592. there

  1593. is

  1594. a

  1595. god

  1596. and

  1597. his

  1598. diligent

  1599. trust

  1600. coloured

  1601. his

  1602. convictions

  1603. and

  1604. he

  1605. could

  1606. sympathise

  1607. with

  1608. people

  1609. wrestling

  1610. in the

  1611. congregation

  1612. who later

  1613. came

  1614. and opened

  1615. their hearts

  1616. to him

  1617. his

  1618. anchor

  1619. verse

  1620. on which

  1621. he would

  1622. often

  1623. cast

  1624. himself

  1625. was

  1626. him

  1627. that

  1628. cometh

  1629. unto

  1630. me

  1631. I

  1632. will

  1633. in

  1634. no

  1635. wise

  1636. cast

  1637. out

  1638. and

  1639. no

  1640. verse

  1641. did he

  1642. so often

  1643. quote in

  1644. his

  1645. preaching

  1646. and in

  1647. his

  1648. private

  1649. counselling

  1650. with

  1651. awakened

  1652. men

  1653. and

  1654. women

  1655. than

  1656. not

  1657. worse

  1658. and

  1659. that

  1660. testing

  1661. time

  1662. came to

  1663. an end

  1664. in

  1665. his

  1666. life

  1667. like

  1668. it

  1669. did

  1670. with

  1671. Bunyan

  1672. and

  1673. like

  1674. it

  1675. did

  1676. with

  1677. Luther

  1678. and

  1679. he

  1680. describes

  1681. his

  1682. piece

  1683. !

  1684. I

  1685. had

  1686. risen

  1687. from

  1688. my

  1689. bed

  1690. in

  1691. an

  1692. agony

  1693. of

  1694. soul

  1695. for

  1696. I

  1697. had

  1698. been

  1699. many

  1700. months

  1701. in

  1702. trouble

  1703. about

  1704. my

  1705. spiritual

  1706. condition

  1707. I

  1708. need

  1709. not

  1710. have

  1711. been

  1712. like

  1713. that

  1714. for

  1715. many

  1716. hours

  1717. if

  1718. I

  1719. had

  1720. only

  1721. had

  1722. faith

  1723. to

  1724. believe

  1725. in

  1726. Jesus

  1727. Christ

  1728. and

  1729. make

  1730. my

  1731. own

  1732. heart

  1733. a

  1734. liar

  1735. but

  1736. my

  1737. own

  1738. heart

  1739. told

  1740. me

  1741. I

  1742. was

  1743. the

  1744. chief

  1745. of

  1746. sinners

  1747. that

  1748. Paul

  1749. who

  1750. called

  1751. himself

  1752. the

  1753. chief

  1754. was

  1755. not

  1756. to

  1757. into

  1758. my

  1759. room

  1760. to

  1761. read

  1762. the

  1763. Bible

  1764. the

  1765. portion

  1766. I

  1767. was

  1768. reading

  1769. was

  1770. the

  1771. third

  1772. chapter

  1773. of

  1774. Romans

  1775. and

  1776. as

  1777. I

  1778. read

  1779. the

  1780. 20th

  1781. and

  1782. following

  1783. verses

  1784. a

  1785. new

  1786. light

  1787. seemed

  1788. to

  1789. break

  1790. in

  1791. on

  1792. my

  1793. soul

  1794. by

  1795. the

  1796. deeds

  1797. of

  1798. the

  1799. law

  1800. there

  1801. shall

  1802. no

  1803. flesh

  1804. be

  1805. justified

  1806. in

  1807. God's

  1808. sight

  1809. that

  1810. I

  1811. knew

  1812. but

  1813. then

  1814. I

  1815. went

  1816. on

  1817. to

  1818. read

  1819. these

  1820. words

  1821. but

  1822. now

  1823. now

  1824. the

  1825. righteousness

  1826. of

  1827. God

  1828. without

  1829. the

  1830. law

  1831. is

  1832. manifested

  1833. being

  1834. witnessed

  1835. by

  1836. the

  1837. law

  1838. and

  1839. the

  1840. prophets

  1841. even

  1842. the

  1843. righteousness

  1844. of

  1845. God

  1846. which

  1847. is

  1848. by

  1849. faith

  1850. of

  1851. Jesus

  1852. Christ

  1853. unto

  1854. all

  1855. and

  1856. upon

  1857. all

  1858. them

  1859. that

  1860. believe

  1861. for

  1862. there

  1863. is

  1864. no

  1865. difference

  1866. and

  1867. with

  1868. that

  1869. passage

  1870. such a

  1871. light

  1872. came

  1873. into

  1874. my

  1875. soul

  1876. and

  1877. I

  1878. struck

  1879. my

  1880. book

  1881. with

  1882. my

  1883. hand

  1884. and

  1885. I

  1886. sprang

  1887. from

  1888. the

  1889. chair

  1890. and

  1891. cried

  1892. if

  1893. that

  1894. scripture

  1895. is

  1896. true

  1897. I

  1898. am

  1899. a

  1900. saved

  1901. man

  1902. that

  1903. is

  1904. what

  1905. I

  1906. want

  1907. that

  1908. is

  1909. what

  1910. God

  1911. offers

  1912. me

  1913. that

  1914. is

  1915. what

  1916. I

  1917. will

  1918. have

  1919. God

  1920. helping

  1921. me

  1922. it

  1923. was

  1924. that

  1925. I

  1926. took

  1927. the

  1928. righteousness

  1929. of

  1930. God

  1931. without

  1932. the

  1933. law

  1934. and

  1935. that

  1936. is

  1937. my

  1938. only

  1939. hope

  1940. and

  1941. so

  1942. that

  1943. period

  1944. then

  1945. of

  1946. searching

  1947. for

  1948. forgiveness

  1949. and

  1950. satanic

  1951. assault

  1952. a

  1953. fearful

  1954. period

  1955. in

  1956. his

  1957. life

  1958. came

  1959. to

  1960. an

  1961. end

  1962. he

  1963. wouldn't

  1964. he

  1965. said

  1966. want

  1967. his

  1968. worst

  1969. enemy

  1970. to

  1971. endure

  1972. what

  1973. he

  1974. had

  1975. experiences

  1976. like

  1977. reading

  1978. the

  1979. first

  1980. chapter

  1981. of

  1982. Bunyan's

  1983. Grace

  1984. of

  1985. Bounty

  1986. he

  1987. said

  1988. that

  1989. his

  1990. friends

  1991. would

  1992. tremble

  1993. for

  1994. him

  1995. thinking

  1996. he

  1997. was

  1998. losing

  1999. his

  2000. reason

  2001. he

  2002. would

  2003. break

  2004. down

  2005. under

  2006. the

  2007. strain

  2008. of

  2009. those

  2010. times

  2011. and

  2012. part

  2013. of

  2014. the

  2015. enormous

  2016. influence

  2017. that

  2018. he

  2019. exercised

  2020. in

  2021. Scotland

  2022. and

  2023. Ireland

  2024. was

  2025. due

  2026. to

  2027. the

  2028. fact

  2029. that

  2030. so

  2031. long

  2032. he

  2033. had

  2034. served

  2035. the

  2036. world

  2037. the

  2038. flesh

  2039. and

  2040. the

  2041. devil

  2042. and

  2043. then

  2044. he

  2045. come

  2046. to

  2047. renounce

  2048. it

  2049. totally

  2050. and

  2051. habits

  2052. had

  2053. been

  2054. formed

  2055. which

  2056. could

  2057. injure

  2058. the

  2059. sinner

  2060. himself

  2061. and

  2062. Brown

  2063. Renor

  2064. would

  2065. compare

  2066. himself

  2067. to

  2068. the

  2069. sick

  2070. man

  2071. of

  2072. Acts

  2073. 4

  2074. who

  2075. was

  2076. 40

  2077. years

  2078. of

  2079. age

  2080. when

  2081. he

  2082. received

  2083. the

  2084. miracle

  2085. of

  2086. healing

  2087. and

  2088. when

  2089. he

  2090. began

  2091. a

  2092. new

  2093. diary

  2094. the

  2095. year

  2096. after

  2097. his

  2098. conversion

  2099. he

  2100. wrote

  2101. his

  2102. name

  2103. Brown

  2104. Renor

  2105. and

  2106. then

  2107. a

  2108. man

  2109. whose

  2110. sins

  2111. crucified

  2112. the

  2113. Son

  2114. of

  2115. God

  2116. and

  2117. he

  2118. penned

  2119. his

  2120. words

  2121. alas

  2122. that I

  2123. so

  2124. lately

  2125. knew

  2126. thee

  2127. thee

  2128. so

  2129. worthy

  2130. of

  2131. the

  2132. best

  2133. nor

  2134. had

  2135. sooner

  2136. turned

  2137. to

  2138. why

  2139. thee

  2140. truest

  2141. good

  2142. and

  2143. only

  2144. rest

  2145. the

  2146. more

  2147. I

  2148. love

  2149. I

  2150. mourn

  2151. the

  2152. more

  2153. that I

  2154. did

  2155. not

  2156. love

  2157. before

  2158. all

  2159. right

  2160. let me

  2161. close

  2162. now

  2163. with

  2164. how

  2165. does

  2166. God

  2167. make

  2168. a

  2169. person

  2170. an

  2171. evangelist

  2172. how

  2173. does

  2174. God

  2175. some

  2176. of

  2177. your

  2178. men

  2179. are

  2180. thinking

  2181. about

  2182. the

  2183. ministry

  2184. is

  2185. God

  2186. calling

  2187. you

  2188. to be

  2189. a

  2190. minister

  2191. there's

  2192. a

  2193. great

  2194. need

  2195. for

  2196. preachers

  2197. of

  2198. the

  2199. gospel

  2200. there's

  2201. great

  2202. need

  2203. for

  2204. evangelists

  2205. church

  2206. planters

  2207. in

  2208. Europe

  2209. in

  2210. these

  2211. days

  2212. how

  2213. did

  2214. God

  2215. draw

  2216. this

  2217. man

  2218. saved

  2219. strengthened

  2220. knowing

  2221. he trusted

  2222. in

  2223. Jesus

  2224. Christ

  2225. how

  2226. did

  2227. God

  2228. call

  2229. him

  2230. now

  2231. to

  2232. be

  2233. a

  2234. preacher

  2235. 11

  2236. months

  2237. after

  2238. his

  2239. conversion

  2240. he

  2241. was

  2242. convinced

  2243. of

  2244. his

  2245. lack

  2246. of

  2247. compassion

  2248. for

  2249. the

  2250. people

  2251. who

  2252. lived

  2253. around

  2254. him

  2255. what

  2256. was

  2257. he

  2258. doing

  2259. for

  2260. them

  2261. so

  2262. firstly

  2263. tract

  2264. distribution

  2265. should

  2266. he

  2267. distribute

  2268. tracts

  2269. that

  2270. would

  2271. make

  2272. him

  2273. look

  2274. ridiculous

  2275. people

  2276. would

  2277. laugh

  2278. at

  2279. him

  2280. people

  2281. would

  2282. call

  2283. him

  2284. mad

  2285. but

  2286. he

  2287. resolved

  2288. to

  2289. try

  2290. and

  2291. one

  2292. day

  2293. he

  2294. went

  2295. to

  2296. a

  2297. quieter

  2298. part

  2299. of

  2300. Elgin

  2301. with

  2302. a

  2303. pocket

  2304. of

  2305. tracts

  2306. he

  2307. met

  2308. an

  2309. old

  2310. woman

  2311. he

  2312. handed

  2313. her

  2314. a

  2315. tract

  2316. she

  2317. took

  2318. it

  2319. without

  2320. a

  2321. smirk

  2322. on

  2323. her

  2324. face

  2325. she

  2326. said

  2327. thank

  2328. you

  2329. as did

  2330. another

  2331. old

  2332. woman

  2333. when

  2334. she

  2335. received

  2336. his

  2337. tract

  2338. the

  2339. test

  2340. came

  2341. as a

  2342. policeman

  2343. came

  2344. walking

  2345. along

  2346. the

  2347. road

  2348. he

  2349. offered

  2350. one

  2351. to

  2352. him

  2353. the

  2354. constable

  2355. said

  2356. thank

  2357. you

  2358. Mr.

  2359. North

  2360. so

  2361. for

  2362. 14

  2363. years

  2364. he

  2365. carried

  2366. a

  2367. supply

  2368. of

  2369. tracts

  2370. in

  2371. his

  2372. pocket

  2373. and

  2374. there

  2375. was

  2376. only

  2377. one

  2378. occasion

  2379. when

  2380. an

  2381. atheist

  2382. refused

  2383. to

  2384. take

  2385. one

  2386. there

  2387. were

  2388. others

  2389. who

  2390. avoided

  2391. him

  2392. and

  2393. he

  2394. noticed

  2395. this

  2396. but

  2397. he

  2398. took

  2399. it

  2400. as

  2401. a

  2402. cross

  2403. !

  2404. so

  2405. he

  2406. would

  2407. engage

  2408. in

  2409. conversation

  2410. with

  2411. people

  2412. and

  2413. he

  2414. would

  2415. leave

  2416. tracts

  2417. in

  2418. prominent

  2419. places

  2420. he

  2421. never

  2422. found

  2423. it

  2424. easy

  2425. after

  2426. 14

  2427. years

  2428. it

  2429. was

  2430. still

  2431. very

  2432. difficult

  2433. he

  2434. said

  2435. it

  2436. took

  2437. him

  2438. half

  2439. an

  2440. hour

  2441. of

  2442. internal

  2443. struggle

  2444. on

  2445. a

  2446. train

  2447. before

  2448. he

  2449. offered

  2450. a

  2451. truck

  2452. to

  2453. a

  2454. fellow

  2455. traveler

  2456. once

  2457. he

  2458. was

  2459. on

  2460. a

  2461. ferry

  2462. and

  2463. there

  2464. were

  2465. a

  2466. group

  2467. of

  2468. gentlemen

  2469. talking

  2470. together

  2471. how

  2472. could

  2473. he

  2474. speak

  2475. to

  2476. them

  2477. it

  2478. was

  2479. so

  2480. pleasant

  2481. and

  2482. far

  2483. easier

  2484. to

  2485. read

  2486. the

  2487. paper

  2488. or

  2489. a

  2490. book

  2491. and

  2492. then

  2493. he

  2494. thought

  2495. of

  2496. the

  2497. eternal

  2498. life

  2499. that

  2500. was

  2501. facing

  2502. these

  2503. men

  2504. and

  2505. he

  2506. galvanized

  2507. them

  2508. he

  2509. went

  2510. across

  2511. and

  2512. he

  2513. smiled

  2514. at

  2515. them

  2516. all

  2517. and

  2518. he

  2519. gave

  2520. them

  2521. each

  2522. a

  2523. tract

  2524. and

  2525. some

  2526. of

  2527. them

  2528. knew

  2529. him

  2530. and

  2531. they

  2532. would

  2533. have

  2534. been

  2535. surprised

  2536. if

  2537. he

  2538. hadn't

  2539. come

  2540. across

  2541. to

  2542. give

  2543. later

  2544. he

  2545. wrote

  2546. well

  2547. as

  2548. you've

  2549. seen

  2550. some

  2551. terrific

  2552. tracts

  2553. like

  2554. rye

  2555. tracts

  2556. but

  2557. they're

  2558. meaty

  2559. and

  2560. convicting

  2561. secondly

  2562. so he's

  2563. giving

  2564. that's

  2565. how he's

  2566. beginning

  2567. his

  2568. journey

  2569. into being

  2570. an evangelist

  2571. and a

  2572. preacher

  2573. he gives

  2574. out tracts

  2575. secondly

  2576. he visits

  2577. the sick

  2578. he was

  2579. a member

  2580. of a free

  2581. church

  2582. and there

  2583. were people

  2584. in the

  2585. congregation

  2586. who were

  2587. sick

  2588. and he

  2589. began

  2590. to visit

  2591. them

  2592. one of

  2593. his

  2594. members

  2595. said

  2596. I remember

  2597. his supplying

  2598. the very

  2599. poor

  2600. and bedridden

  2601. with many

  2602. little

  2603. comforts

  2604. he

  2605. paid for

  2606. gas

  2607. to warm

  2608. their rooms

  2609. I myself

  2610. have gone

  2611. to see

  2612. some of

  2613. these

  2614. poor

  2615. people

  2616. and I'll

  2617. never forget

  2618. some of

  2619. those visits

  2620. it was a

  2621. wretched old

  2622. body

  2623. and she

  2624. couldn't

  2625. leave the

  2626. bed

  2627. for years

  2628. and he

  2629. would pick

  2630. up a

  2631. stool

  2632. and he

  2633. would sit

  2634. next to

  2635. the bed

  2636. and he

  2637. would bring

  2638. oranges

  2639. with him

  2640. and he

  2641. would unpeel

  2642. the orange

  2643. and he

  2644. would give

  2645. her a

  2646. portion

  2647. after portion

  2648. and the

  2649. surroundings

  2650. were so

  2651. disgusting

  2652. even to

  2653. mention

  2654. after that

  2655. time I

  2656. for one

  2657. felt I

  2658. couldn't be

  2659. in his

  2660. company for

  2661. a quarter

  2662. an hour

  2663. without being

  2664. benefited

  2665. by it

  2666. we all

  2667. loved him

  2668. so much

  2669. and he

  2670. had a

  2671. there was a

  2672. town

  2673. missionary

  2674. a member

  2675. of the

  2676. congregation

  2677. and they

  2678. would go

  2679. to the

  2680. hospital

  2681. and they

  2682. would go

  2683. from

  2684. from bed

  2685. to bed

  2686. and they

  2687. would talk

  2688. on Sunday

  2689. afternoons

  2690. thirdly

  2691. there was

  2692. evangelistic

  2693. visitation

  2694. and that

  2695. developed

  2696. of course

  2697. from visiting

  2698. the sick

  2699. in

  2700. Aberdeen

  2701. in

  2702. 1863

  2703. he spoke

  2704. of this

  2705. when I

  2706. first came

  2707. to know

  2708. the Lord

  2709. the Spirit

  2710. said to me

  2711. Brown

  2712. run off

  2713. there's that

  2714. woman in

  2715. the

  2716. porter's

  2717. lodge

  2718. you ought

  2719. to go

  2720. and speak

  2721. to her

  2722. about

  2723. religion

  2724. but the

  2725. flesh

  2726. said

  2727. don't

  2728. do

  2729. that

  2730. keep

  2731. what

  2732. you've

  2733. got

  2734. to

  2735. yourself

  2736. but the

  2737. Spirit

  2738. gave me

  2739. no rest

  2740. till I

  2741. went to

  2742. the woman

  2743. at the

  2744. porter's

  2745. lodge

  2746. I

  2747. read the

  2748. Bible

  2749. to her

  2750. and told

  2751. her what

  2752. the Lord

  2753. had done

  2754. for my

  2755. soul

  2756. then the

  2757. Spirit

  2758. said to

  2759. me

  2760. there's

  2761. the

  2762. washer

  2763. woman

  2764. in the

  2765. town

  2766. you know

  2767. you should

  2768. go to

  2769. her

  2770. and read

  2771. and pray

  2772. with her

  2773. also

  2774. do nothing

  2775. of the

  2776. sort

  2777. she will

  2778. likely

  2779. think

  2780. that she

  2781. has

  2782. more

  2783. religion

  2784. than you

  2785. have

  2786. the

  2787. Spirit

  2788. would

  2789. give me

  2790. no rest

  2791. till I

  2792. read

  2793. and prayed

  2794. with the

  2795. washer

  2796. woman

  2797. so he

  2798. gave

  2799. away

  2800. trunks

  2801. he

  2802. visited

  2803. the

  2804. sick

  2805. reading

  2806. the

  2807. Bible

  2808. to

  2809. them

  2810. and

  2811. occasionally

  2812. prayed

  2813. then he

  2814. visited

  2815. a young

  2816. woman

  2817. whom he

  2818. had been

  2819. told about

  2820. she didn't

  2821. have long

  2822. to live

  2823. she said

  2824. to him

  2825. don't mind

  2826. me

  2827. my father

  2828. please speak

  2829. to him

  2830. he's a

  2831. bad man

  2832. and so

  2833. he went

  2834. to the

  2835. room where

  2836. they were

  2837. and he

  2838. spoke to

  2839. them

  2840. and they

  2841. were impressed

  2842. with what

  2843. he said

  2844. and there

  2845. were two

  2846. other people

  2847. in the

  2848. room

  2849. and they

  2850. were helped

  2851. by his

  2852. words

  2853. so that

  2854. whenever

  2855. he visited

  2856. the home

  2857. which was

  2858. very frequently

  2859. in order to

  2860. see the

  2861. dying

  2862. daughter

  2863. they would

  2864. come

  2865. and they

  2866. would listen

  2867. to what

  2868. he had

  2869. to say

  2870. and the

  2871. father

  2872. was changed

  2873. and the

  2874. change in

  2875. his life

  2876. was so

  2877. evident

  2878. that

  2879. everybody

  2880. in the

  2881. street

  2882. all his

  2883. neighbours

  2884. knew

  2885. about it

  2886. and then

  2887. many other

  2888. people

  2889. wanted to

  2890. know

  2891. about this

  2892. change

  2893. and it

  2894. all came

  2895. about him

  2896. visiting

  2897. a dying

  2898. girl

  2899. then a

  2900. woman

  2901. came to

  2902. him

  2903. and said

  2904. can you

  2905. come and

  2906. see my

  2907. husband

  2908. and speak

  2909. to him

  2910. the way

  2911. you were

  2912. speaking to

  2913. us

  2914. in the

  2915. room

  2916. here

  2917. and the

  2918. man was

  2919. a shoemaker

  2920. and he

  2921. asked

  2922. from the

  2923. north to

  2924. return

  2925. and he

  2926. would bring

  2927. a few

  2928. of his

  2929. fellow

  2930. shoemakers

  2931. with him

  2932. and a

  2933. dozen

  2934. gathered

  2935. to hear

  2936. him

  2937. and they

  2938. asked him

  2939. to return

  2940. and this

  2941. time

  2942. sixty

  2943. men

  2944. assembled

  2945. to hear

  2946. him

  2947. and these

  2948. meetings

  2949. continued

  2950. and grew

  2951. and in

  2952. various

  2953. occasions

  2954. so that

  2955. every night

  2956. all over

  2957. Elgin

  2958. he was out

  2959. speaking

  2960. to groups

  2961. of men

  2962. and women

  2963. and there

  2964. was a

  2965. solemnity

  2966. and a

  2967. deep

  2968. hearing

  2969. the

  2970. daughter

  2971. in law

  2972. John

  2973. Macdonald

  2974. the apostle

  2975. of the

  2976. north

  2977. heard him

  2978. in these

  2979. meetings

  2980. and tried

  2981. to attend

  2982. she couldn't

  2983. get in

  2984. the stairs

  2985. up to the

  2986. room where he

  2987. was speaking

  2988. were full of

  2989. people sitting

  2990. and craning

  2991. their ears

  2992. to hear

  2993. she said

  2994. she heard

  2995. nothing like

  2996. it since

  2997. hearing her

  2998. father preach

  2999. and he would

  3000. be driven

  3001. home in a

  3002. horse and

  3003. truck

  3004. by one of

  3005. the elders

  3006. of the

  3007. church

  3008. and he

  3009. would express

  3010. to his

  3011. driver his

  3012. fear

  3013. oh I'm

  3014. not really

  3015. ordained

  3016. I shouldn't

  3017. be speaking

  3018. in meetings

  3019. like this

  3020. I'm trespassing

  3021. on the

  3022. duties of a

  3023. minister

  3024. but then

  3025. I can find

  3026. no prohibition

  3027. in the Bible

  3028. that stops me

  3029. from speaking

  3030. like this

  3031. and I bring

  3032. the matter

  3033. to God

  3034. in prayer

  3035. again and

  3036. again

  3037. if it's

  3038. against God's

  3039. will

  3040. close the

  3041. door

  3042. but the

  3043. very

  3044. reverse

  3045. occurs

  3046. and I

  3047. get more

  3048. and more

  3049. invitations

  3050. to come

  3051. and speak

  3052. to gatherings

  3053. of men

  3054. and women

  3055. he travelled

  3056. a great

  3057. distance

  3058. to visit

  3059. one family

  3060. where there

  3061. was much

  3062. carelessness

  3063. and indifference

  3064. about the

  3065. same

  3066. it was a

  3067. long journey

  3068. and he

  3069. had no

  3070. assurance

  3071. that he

  3072. would be

  3073. welcomed

  3074. when he

  3075. knocked the

  3076. door

  3077. but they

  3078. asked him

  3079. in

  3080. and when

  3081. he visited

  3082. Woody Stewart

  3083. then he

  3084. spent much

  3085. of one day

  3086. writing an

  3087. owner's

  3088. letter to

  3089. someone

  3090. who

  3091. he had

  3092. known

  3093. in the

  3094. days

  3095. of his

  3096. follies

  3097. and he

  3098. wrote

  3099. and said

  3100. he longed

  3101. that the

  3102. saviour

  3103. that he

  3104. knew

  3105. that they

  3106. should know

  3107. him

  3108. too

  3109. and the

  3110. Christian wrote

  3111. to him

  3112. and said

  3113. will you

  3114. go and

  3115. see

  3116. my

  3117. brother

  3118. a man

  3119. he'd

  3120. hunted

  3121. with

  3122. in his

  3123. early life

  3124. and he

  3125. shrunk

  3126. from the

  3127. invitation

  3128. she gave

  3129. him

  3130. an

  3131. address

  3132. in

  3133. Edinburgh

  3134. and he

  3135. went to

  3136. see him

  3137. and when

  3138. he went

  3139. through his

  3140. pockets

  3141. he'd lost

  3142. a bit

  3143. of paper

  3144. so he

  3145. took a

  3146. camp to

  3147. the station

  3148. to go

  3149. to Glasgow

  3150. and in

  3151. the camp

  3152. he put

  3153. his hand

  3154. in his

  3155. pocket

  3156. and he

  3157. found a

  3158. piece of

  3159. paper

  3160. so he

  3161. told straight

  3162. away

  3163. turn around

  3164. and go

  3165. to this

  3166. address

  3167. he could

  3168. have

  3169. pleaded

  3170. the providence

  3171. of God

  3172. but he

  3173. went to

  3174. see the

  3175. man

  3176. and spoke

  3177. earnestly

  3178. and lovingly

  3179. to him

  3180. fourthly

  3181. there was

  3182. street

  3183. preaching

  3184. next

  3185. he'd

  3186. gone to

  3187. London

  3188. to visit

  3189. his mother

  3190. and one

  3191. Sunday

  3192. afternoon

  3193. he called

  3194. on a

  3195. young

  3196. Scotsman

  3197. who'd

  3198. been

  3199. converted

  3200. in a

  3201. remarkable

  3202. way

  3203. and had

  3204. begun

  3205. to

  3206. preach

  3207. in the

  3208. street

  3209. and

  3210. Braulot

  3211. knocked

  3212. him

  3213. the door

  3214. and he

  3215. said

  3216. if I

  3217. can't

  3218. ask

  3219. you

  3220. in

  3221. come

  3222. with

  3223. me

  3224. now

  3225. I'm

  3226. preaching

  3227. in

  3228. King's

  3229. Cross

  3230. will you

  3231. come

  3232. with

  3233. me

  3234. and he

  3235. stood

  3236. on a

  3237. street

  3238. corner

  3239. and he

  3240. prayed

  3241. and then

  3242. he addressed

  3243. a handful

  3244. of people

  3245. nobody

  3246. stopped

  3247. his words

  3248. seemed to

  3249. just be like

  3250. barbarians

  3251. bouncing

  3252. around the

  3253. place

  3254. not making

  3255. any impact

  3256. and there

  3257. was frustration

  3258. in the air

  3259. and somebody

  3260. in the crowd

  3261. we want to

  3262. hear the

  3263. Stoutman

  3264. with the

  3265. dark eyes

  3266. Brownman

  3267. all standing

  3268. next to

  3269. him

  3270. and there

  3271. was no

  3272. escape

  3273. and he

  3274. wasn't

  3275. ashamed

  3276. of

  3277. the

  3278. gospel

  3279. and there

  3280. on the

  3281. street

  3282. corner

  3283. near

  3284. King's

  3285. Cross

  3286. he

  3287. began

  3288. to

  3289. preach

  3290. and

  3291. immediately

  3292. his

  3293. voice

  3294. and his

  3295. presence

  3296. and his

  3297. conviction

  3298. that what

  3299. he was

  3300. saying

  3301. was the

  3302. very

  3303. word

  3304. of

  3305. God

  3306. impacted

  3307. and a

  3308. crowd

  3309. came

  3310. and people

  3311. stopped

  3312. a large

  3313. crowd

  3314. and when

  3315. he preached

  3316. until he

  3317. was exhausted

  3318. people cried

  3319. out

  3320. don't

  3321. stop

  3322. go on

  3323. but he

  3324. couldn't

  3325. preach

  3326. any

  3327. further

  3328. and so

  3329. he was

  3330. persuaded

  3331. from that

  3332. experience

  3333. of the

  3334. usefulness

  3335. of open

  3336. air

  3337. preaching

  3338. and his

  3339. own

  3340. ability

  3341. to speak

  3342. without

  3343. notes

  3344. of the

  3345. God he

  3346. knew

  3347. and the

  3348. Bible

  3349. that he

  3350. knew

  3351. and then

  3352. fifthly

  3353. Sunday

  3354. preaching

  3355. from the

  3356. pulpit

  3357. and that

  3358. was a

  3359. providence

  3360. out of

  3361. his

  3362. control

  3363. he

  3364. returned

  3365. to

  3366. Inverness

  3367. to

  3368. Dallas

  3369. where he

  3370. lived for

  3371. years

  3372. and hunted

  3373. and fished

  3374. and raced

  3375. and he

  3376. told them

  3377. he was

  3378. looking forward

  3379. to being

  3380. with them

  3381. in the

  3382. free church

  3383. on Sunday

  3384. he said

  3385. oh

  3386. we haven't

  3387. got anybody

  3388. the preacher

  3389. has been

  3390. called away

  3391. and there's

  3392. nobody

  3393. we looked

  3394. and visited

  3395. lots of

  3396. people

  3397. they can't

  3398. will you

  3399. preach

  3400. there'd be

  3401. no sermon

  3402. unless you

  3403. come and

  3404. preach

  3405. they pleaded

  3406. with him

  3407. I'm not

  3408. ordained

  3409. well let

  3410. an elder

  3411. take the

  3412. devotions

  3413. and I'll

  3414. preach

  3415. and that's

  3416. what happened

  3417. and they

  3418. thought of

  3419. 18 months

  3420. ago

  3421. and that

  3422. long

  3423. long

  3424. wealthy

  3425. hunting

  3426. shooting

  3427. riding

  3428. Sunday

  3429. riding

  3430. out

  3431. to fish

  3432. and hunt

  3433. the next

  3434. day

  3435. the Monday

  3436. after that

  3437. Sunday

  3438. when they

  3439. thought

  3440. what has

  3441. grace

  3442. wrought

  3443. in this

  3444. man's

  3445. life

  3446. to preach

  3447. to us

  3448. like that

  3449. the next

  3450. Monday

  3451. there was

  3452. a tragedy

  3453. it was

  3454. a heavy

  3455. rain

  3456. and two

  3457. little

  3458. children

  3459. had tried

  3460. to cross

  3461. the river

  3462. on a plank

  3463. and they

  3464. had fallen

  3465. in and

  3466. were drowned

  3467. and the

  3468. minister

  3469. was away

  3470. and the

  3471. father came

  3472. to Brown

  3473. Row

  3474. and asked

  3475. him to

  3476. come and

  3477. speak to

  3478. his wife

  3479. and where

  3480. he did

  3481. so the

  3482. bodies

  3483. of the

  3484. children

  3485. were brought

  3486. from downstream

  3487. and were

  3488. brought and

  3489. the crowd of

  3490. people gathered

  3491. and they

  3492. looked to

  3493. Brown

  3494. and he

  3495. stood outside

  3496. the house

  3497. and he

  3498. spoke to

  3499. of the

  3500. providence

  3501. of God

  3502. and the

  3503. love of

  3504. God in

  3505. Jesus

  3506. Christ

  3507. and

  3508. to

  3509. sympathy

  3510. with

  3511. them

  3512. and

  3513. urged

  3514. them

  3515. to be

  3516. ready

  3517. to

  3518. meet

  3519. God

  3520. themselves

  3521. and the

  3522. minister

  3523. came back

  3524. and he

  3525. was told

  3526. that everything

  3527. had happened

  3528. and he

  3529. went to

  3530. see him

  3531. straight away

  3532. and said

  3533. will you

  3534. preach next

  3535. Sunday

  3536. again

  3537. preach again

  3538. and the

  3539. building

  3540. was full

  3541. and in

  3542. the congregation

  3543. were two

  3544. men who

  3545. walked eight

  3546. miles to

  3547. hear him

  3548. and

  3549. they came

  3550. and said

  3551. can you

  3552. come to

  3553. where we

  3554. live

  3555. and preach

  3556. there

  3557. and he

  3558. said

  3559. but I'm

  3560. not ordained

  3561. they wouldn't

  3562. take no for

  3563. an answer

  3564. and so

  3565. there

  3566. he preached

  3567. to a large

  3568. and attentive

  3569. congregation

  3570. every seat

  3571. taken

  3572. the staircases

  3573. the stairwells

  3574. people were

  3575. converted

  3576. the cause

  3577. of Christ

  3578. was revived

  3579. he was asked

  3580. to explain

  3581. whether he

  3582. was a real

  3583. preacher

  3584. or not

  3585. you would

  3586. say

  3587. don't think

  3588. I'm intruding

  3589. into the

  3590. office of

  3591. the ministry

  3592. I'm not

  3593. an authorised

  3594. preacher

  3595. but I'll

  3596. tell you

  3597. what I am

  3598. I'm a man

  3599. who stood

  3600. on the

  3601. brink

  3602. of the

  3603. bottomless

  3604. pit

  3605. and I

  3606. looked in

  3607. and I

  3608. saw many

  3609. of you

  3610. going down

  3611. into that

  3612. pit

  3613. I am

  3614. here to

  3615. haul

  3616. you back

  3617. and warn

  3618. you of

  3619. the danger

  3620. I'm here

  3621. as the

  3622. chief of

  3623. sinners

  3624. saved by

  3625. grace

  3626. to tell

  3627. you

  3628. that the

  3629. grace

  3630. that saved

  3631. me

  3632. can surely

  3633. save

  3634. you

  3635. and so

  3636. in

  3637. Dallas

  3638. in

  3639. Venice

  3640. the place

  3641. where he

  3642. had so

  3643. publicly

  3644. shown his

  3645. opposition

  3646. to the

  3647. claims

  3648. of Christ

  3649. there he

  3650. began

  3651. preaching

  3652. on the

  3653. Lord's

  3654. day

  3655. and he

  3656. did it

  3657. tirelessly

  3658. for the

  3659. rest of

  3660. his life

  3661. with great

  3662. effect

  3663. he said

  3664. I've done

  3665. all the

  3666. harm I

  3667. could

  3668. in Scotland

  3669. and now

  3670. I intend

  3671. to remain

  3672. here

  3673. and do

  3674. all the

  3675. good I

  3676. can

  3677. and so

  3678. his ministry

  3679. began

  3680. and went

  3681. on

  3682. and he

  3683. was

  3684. recognized

  3685. unanimously

  3686. by the

  3687. General Assembly

  3688. of the

  3689. Church of

  3690. Scotland

  3691. and

  3692. Rabbi

  3693. Duncan

  3694. just loved

  3695. his preaching

  3696. and

  3697. coalition

  3698. and

  3699. the

  3700. leaders

  3701. in the

  3702. free church

  3703. he was

  3704. set apart

  3705. he left

  3706. a famous

  3707. message

  3708. it follows

  3709. on from

  3710. what we

  3711. heard this

  3712. morning

  3713. six

  3714. short

  3715. rules

  3716. for young

  3717. Christians

  3718. never

  3719. neglect

  3720. daily

  3721. private

  3722. prayer

  3723. and when

  3724. you pray

  3725. remember

  3726. that God

  3727. is present

  3728. that he

  3729. hears

  3730. your prayers

  3731. two

  3732. never

  3733. neglect

  3734. daily

  3735. private

  3736. Bible

  3737. reading

  3738. and when

  3739. you read

  3740. remember

  3741. that God

  3742. is speaking

  3743. to you

  3744. and that

  3745. you are

  3746. to believe

  3747. an act

  3748. upon what

  3749. he says

  3750. I believe

  3751. all

  3752. backsliding

  3753. begins

  3754. with a

  3755. neglect

  3756. of these

  3757. two

  3758. rules

  3759. three

  3760. never

  3761. a day

  3762. pass

  3763. without

  3764. trying to

  3765. do

  3766. something

  3767. for

  3768. Jesus

  3769. every

  3770. night

  3771. reflect

  3772. on what

  3773. Jesus

  3774. has done

  3775. for you

  3776. and then

  3777. ask

  3778. yourself

  3779. what

  3780. am I

  3781. doing

  3782. for him

  3783. four

  3784. if ever

  3785. you are

  3786. in doubt

  3787. as to a

  3788. thing

  3789. being right

  3790. or wrong

  3791. go to

  3792. your room

  3793. and kneel

  3794. down

  3795. and ask

  3796. God's

  3797. blessing

  3798. upon it

  3799. if you

  3800. can't do

  3801. this

  3802. it's wrong

  3803. five

  3804. never take

  3805. your

  3806. Christianity

  3807. from Christians

  3808. or argue

  3809. that because

  3810. such and

  3811. such people

  3812. do so

  3813. and so

  3814. that therefore

  3815. you may

  3816. you are

  3817. to ask

  3818. yourself

  3819. how would

  3820. Christ

  3821. act

  3822. in my

  3823. place

  3824. and strive

  3825. to follow

  3826. him

  3827. six

  3828. never

  3829. believe

  3830. what you

  3831. feel

  3832. if it

  3833. contradicts

  3834. God's

  3835. word

  3836. ask

  3837. yourself

  3838. can

  3839. what I

  3840. feel

  3841. be true

  3842. if

  3843. God's

  3844. word

  3845. is

  3846. true

  3847. and

  3848. if

  3849. both

  3850. cannot

  3851. be

  3852. true

  3853. believe

  3854. God

  3855. and

  3856. make

  3857. your

  3858. own

  3859. heart

  3860. a

  3861. liar

  3862. so

  3863. the

  3864. long

  3865. life

  3866. of

  3867. ministry

  3868. 1859

  3869. in

  3870. Ulster

  3871. and his

  3872. preaching

  3873. there

  3874. his awakening

  3875. ministry

  3876. came to

  3877. Wales

  3878. to Swansea

  3879. to preach

  3880. and travelled

  3881. throughout

  3882. the British

  3883. Isles

  3884. until his

  3885. death

  3886. the transformation

  3887. of a man

  3888. so

  3889. wonderfully

  3890. transformed

  3891. by grace

  3892. encouraging

  3893. us

  3894. to

  3895. follow

  3896. him

  3897. let's

  3898. pray

  3899. him

  3900. to

  3901. to

  3902. to

  3903. him

  3904. to

  3905. him

  3906. to

  3907. !
