  1. If you have a Bible with you then please turn with me to the 44th Psalm and follow with me as we reflect together on the Word of God.

  2. One of the striking features of the book of Psalms is their unsettling honesty.

  3. Many of the Psalms, as you will know, are straightforward songs of praise, of adoration, of thanksgiving and of petition.

  4. Some Psalms are memorable, the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

  5. Or Psalm 46, God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in times of trouble.

  6. Many of the Psalms, the Psalms probably that we know best, are Psalms that speak to us of the greatness of God, the goodness of God, the unfailing faithfulness of God, the promises of God, the kindnesses of God.

  7. But some of the Psalms express perplexity, fears, anguish, discouragements and even hostility and anger to God himself.

  8. In this 44th Psalm, we find one of God's servants expressing his bewilderment with God.

  9. He cannot fathom God.

  10. God seems bizarre to him.

  11. Why are you sleeping, O Lord?

  12. Verse 23, why do you hide your face?

  13. Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?

  14. God seems to have hidden himself and left his people at the mercy of their enemies who are God's enemies.

  15. This is what puzzles the Psalmist.

  16. And maybe that's where some of us are in our lives tonight.

  17. You know what God has told you and told his church about himself in the Bible.

  18. You know all about God's many great and precious promises.

  19. But your experience contradicts your theology.

  20. Your personal circumstances, your family circumstances or perhaps your church circumstances seem to mock God and his promises.

  21. Where is God when you need him?

  22. Now if that's not your experience tonight, or it's never been your experience,

  23. and you're living in a fantasy world,

  24. Psalms like this are inscripturated for us.

  25. Not least to tell us that the believing life is not an even life.

  26. The believing life, if I can use this metaphor,

  27. the believing life is horticultural and not mechanical.

  28. It doesn't proceed by even forward processes that are unhindered.

  29. It's horticultural.

  30. There are times of progress, but then there appears to be stagnation and even regression.

  31. The cold, bitter winds of opposition form.

  32. Life becomes hard.

  33. And this is the reality here.

  34. Life has become hard.

  35. The experience of God's people contradicts their theology.

  36. They would be the first to confess that the Lord is God.

  37. That there is no other beside him.

  38. That he is the living one.

  39. From everlasting to everlasting, the Yahweh, the I am.

  40. They would be the first to say the Lord is rich in mercy, slow to anger, abounding in covenant love.

  41. They could confess it with their lips.

  42. But their hearts and their lives are screaming.

  43. But where are you?

  44. Where are you?

  45. Why are you sleeping?

  46. Oh Lord.

  47. What I want you to notice, just as we begin to consider the psalm as a whole,

  48. is to notice that the psalmist's perplexity did not drive him to despair, but to prayer.

  49. He brought his perplexity, his bewilderment, even his, and I think it might be true to say this,

  50. his anger with God, he brought it to the Lord in prayer.

  51. He didn't sublimate it.

  52. He didn't pretend that all is well.

  53. He didn't think, well, let me just place my circumstances to the side because this is the Lord.

  54. He is deeply honest, unsettlingly honest with God, but he brings it to God in prayer.

  55. And he unburdens his heart and soul before the Lord.

  56. You have behind me and above me an outline of the psalm.

  57. I thought it might be helpful.

  58. I wasn't sure many of you would be overly familiar with the 44th psalm.

  59. And hopefully that will be helpful as we think through.

  60. Briefly touching on the first section and spending more time on verses 9 to the end, verse 26.

  61. Notice, first of all, the spiritual continuity of genuine faith.

  62. And this really is the first eight verses of the psalm.

  63. Look how the psalm begins.

  64. O God, we have heard with our ears, our fathers have told us, what deeds you performed in their days, in the days of old.

  65. And he begins to recite what the fathers had told their children of the mighty acts of God in history.

  66. And he in particular is thinking, you'll notice from the language, about the mighty acts of God at the time of the Exodus.

  67. And the planting of the people of God, God's covenant people, in the land of promise.

  68. With your own hand you drove out the nation.

  69. Remember the seven nations who occupied the land of promise.

  70. But then, that is your people you planted.

  71. You afflicted the peoples.

  72. But then, your own people you set free.

  73. For not by their own sword did they win the land.

  74. Our fathers have told us this, that they didn't gain these victories by their own ingenuity, by their plans, and by their power, and by their might, and by their weaponry.

  75. It was your right hand and your arm and the light of your face.

  76. For you delighted in them.

  77. Our fathers have told us.

  78. You are my king, O God, ordained salvation for Jacob.

  79. Through you we push down our foes.

  80. Through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.

  81. For not in my bow do I trust.

  82. Nor can my sword save me.

  83. But you have, in the past, saved us from our foes.

  84. You have put to shame those who hate us.

  85. In God we have boasted continually.

  86. And if the psalm ended there, we go away happy.

  87. But, verse 9 begins.

  88. But notice just briefly the spiritual continuity of genuine faith.

  89. Here is someone who is saying, Lord, I know you are great.

  90. I know you are powerful.

  91. I know you are the God who is for your people.

  92. Our fathers have told us.

  93. I love that phrase.

  94. Years ago in Cambridge I was speaking to the children.

  95. I would usually speak to them in the morning preparing them for the sermon.

  96. I was speaking that Sunday morning on the inspiration and sufficiency of Holy Scripture.

  97. And I said to the children, how do we know the Bible is the word of God?

  98. Little Hannah Knight puts her hand up.

  99. I said, Hannah, my daddy told me.

  100. And everyone laughed.

  101. Except me.

  102. I said, that's a wonderful answer.

  103. That's a glorious answer.

  104. And then I said, but how did your daddy know?

  105. What the writer is saying, Lord, the theology I have concerning you,

  106. the truth I know about you, I have because of the faithfulness of our fathers.

  107. He's highlighting the spiritual continuity of faith.

  108. He's not speaking about borrowed faith.

  109. He is speaking about the covenantal responsibility that fathers in particular have to tell their children about the Lord.

  110. Their fathers told them.

  111. Now church history can be a wonderful source of encouragement.

  112. I think fathers and mothers should be telling their children,

  113. let me tell you about what God has done throughout the ages after the close of the canon of Scripture.

  114. How God raised up men like Irenaeus of Leon and Athanasius of Alexandria.

  115. And then you've got Augustine of Hippo.

  116. And you go right through the history.

  117. Anselm of Canterbury.

  118. You come to Luther and Calvin.

  119. And then the Puritans and Jonathan Edwards and the mighty acts of God in the 19th century.

  120. Charles Spurgeon and our children hear about what God hath wrought.

  121. And our children discover that God is great.

  122. That God is powerful.

  123. That God is glorious.

  124. That God is for his people.

  125. But then comes a difficulty.

  126. Daddy, you've told me all about what God did then.

  127. 1859, 1906 in Wales.

  128. 1948 in the island of Lewes.

  129. But what about today?

  130. What about now?

  131. What about now?

  132. And so after he highlights the covenantal continuity of faith,

  133. the spiritual continuity of faith,

  134. he comes to the heart of the psalm.

  135. The first eight verses are not the psalmist expressing simply his evangelical credentials.

  136. He is really saying,

  137. Lord, I know there is none like unto you.

  138. I know that.

  139. Your mighty acts in history that my fathers, our fathers have told us of.

  140. Shout that out.

  141. But you have rejected us and disgraced us.

  142. And so from verse 9 to 22,

  143. he speaks about the inevitable perplexity of genuine faith.

  144. He compares the past history with the present tragic state of God's people.

  145. And what perplexes the psalmist,

  146. what anguishes the psalmist,

  147. you can't miss surely the anguish of the language of the psalmist,

  148. is the contradiction between what God did then and what he is not doing now.

  149. Where is God when you need him?

  150. You cannot but be struck by the searing honesty of the psalmist.

  151. Verse 10,

  152. You have made us to turn back from the foe.

  153. Verse 11,

  154. You have made us like sheep for slaughter,

  155. scattered us among the nations.

  156. It's possible,

  157. we're not told,

  158. but it's possible that the psalm is written during the Babylonian captivity,

  159. middle years of the 6th century before Christ.

  160. You've sold your people for a trifle.

  161. You've made us the taunt of our neighbours.

  162. People look at us and laugh.

  163. That's the church of God,

  164. of Yahweh,

  165. Yahweh,

  166. the living one,

  167. who is neither beginning of days nor end of life.

  168. That bedraggled remnant

  169. is the people of God.

  170. You've made us a taunt to our neighbours,

  171. derision and scorn for those around us.

  172. We're filled with shame and disgrace,

  173. saying,

  174. You have made us a byword among the nations.

  175. In other words,

  176. there is public shame and humiliation

  177. to belonging to the covenant people of God.

  178. All day long,

  179. my disgrace is before me.

  180. Shame has covered my face

  181. at the sound of the taunter and reviler,

  182. at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.

  183. He is searingly honest with God.

  184. He is acknowledging and recognising

  185. the sovereignty of God.

  186. He knows that God isn't a bit player.

  187. He knows that God is not peripheral to history.

  188. He knows that the hand that ultimately shapes,

  189. determines and styles and progresses history

  190. is the hand of the covenant God of Israel.

  191. He knows that.

  192. And it's that divine sovereignty

  193. that leaves him gasping with anguish and bewilderment.

  194. But that anguish and bewilderment

  195. is inevitable.

  196. It belongs to the very nature

  197. of faith

  198. in a fallen world.

  199. because we are not God.

  200. Because his ways are higher than our ways.

  201. His thoughts are higher than our thoughts.

  202. Because we see through a glass darkly.

  203. Because we see partially.

  204. We can't even see around the corner.

  205. Never mind what lies ahead

  206. in the coming week.

  207. Because we see only the reverse side

  208. of the tapestry

  209. with its tangled mints.

  210. and not the side that God is seeing

  211. weaving perfectly

  212. his perfect design

  213. and sovereign will

  214. that is an inevitability

  215. to perplexity

  216. and anguish

  217. in the life of faith.

  218. We can't escape it.

  219. We might want to escape it.

  220. But we can't escape it.

  221. We have to learn to live with it.

  222. This is part of the tension

  223. of being believers

  224. in a yet fallen world

  225. with yet

  226. corruptible bodies

  227. where sin

  228. yet indwells us.

  229. He's perplexed with God.

  230. But he's honest

  231. in his perplexity.

  232. And it's accented

  233. you notice in verse 17

  234. all this has come upon us

  235. though we've not forgotten you.

  236. We've not been false

  237. to your covenant.

  238. Maybe you're thinking

  239. ah he's overstating

  240. the case here.

  241. No he's not.

  242. He's not saying

  243. we're sinless.

  244. He's saying

  245. Lord

  246. we've not forgotten you

  247. but you seem

  248. to have forgotten us.

  249. We've not been false

  250. to your covenant.

  251. Again let me say

  252. he's not saying

  253. we're sinless.

  254. He's saying

  255. Lord

  256. we have been true

  257. to you.

  258. That's why we can't

  259. really understand

  260. why all this

  261. has happened.

  262. Then in verses

  263. 23 to 26

  264. we notice

  265. the familial boldness

  266. of genuine faith.

  267. Awake.

  268. Why are you sleeping

  269. oh Lord?

  270. Rouse yourself.

  271. Do not

  272. reject us

  273. forever.

  274. The first imperative

  275. comes with a shock.

  276. He's commanding God

  277. to awake.

  278. He's not saying

  279. Lord

  280. will you

  281. please

  282. come to me

  283. and

  284. help me

  285. to perhaps

  286. understand

  287. why this has happened

  288. and why you're doing

  289. what you're doing

  290. or not doing

  291. what you're not doing.

  292. He says

  293. awake.

  294. There are four

  295. imperatives

  296. four commands.

  297. Awake.

  298. Stop sleeping

  299. on the job.

  300. Rouse yourself.

  301. Do not

  302. reject us

  303. forever.

  304. That's the

  305. familial boldness

  306. of authentic

  307. genuine faith.

  308. remember in the

  309. in the boat

  310. our Lord Jesus

  311. is crossing

  312. Galilee

  313. and a storm

  314. breaks out

  315. and

  316. he's asleep

  317. in the stern

  318. of the boat

  319. and the disciples

  320. come

  321. terrified

  322. by the wind

  323. and the wind

  324. they were seasoned

  325. fishermen

  326. but they were

  327. terrified

  328. and they say

  329. wake

  330. Lord

  331. do you not

  332. care

  333. that we're

  334. in danger

  335. of perishing?

  336. You see

  337. there are times

  338. when it seems

  339. as if God

  340. has

  341. gone away

  342. and what

  343. you have here

  344. is this

  345. familial

  346. boldness

  347. of genuine

  348. faith.

  349. You find the same

  350. thing

  351. in the book

  352. of Habakkuk

    Habakkuk 1 chapter mention

  353. chapter 1

  354. O Lord

  355. how long

  356. shall I cry

  357. for help

  358. and you will

  359. not hear

  360. or cry to you

  361. violence

  362. and you will

  363. not save

  364. why do you

  365. make me see

  366. iniquity?

  367. Why do you

  368. idly

  369. look at

  370. wrong?

  371. Destruction

  372. and violence

  373. are before me

  374. the law

  375. is paralysed

  376. justice

  377. never goes

  378. forth

  379. the wicked

  380. surround

  381. the righteous

  382. justice

  383. has been

  384. perverted

  385. and you're

  386. asleep

  387. in the

  388. job

  389. you're idle

  390. you're passive

  391. you're inert

  392. I wonder

  393. if you've

  394. ever

  395. been

  396. that bold

  397. with God

  398. maybe you're

  399. thinking

  400. well

  401. this was

  402. out of

  403. place

  404. this was

  405. just a step

  406. too far

  407. this was

  408. this was

  409. really

  410. not how

  411. a creature

  412. speaks to

  413. the creator

  414. this is

  415. not how

  416. a redeemed

  417. forgiven

  418. sinner

  419. speaks to

  420. the one

  421. who at

  422. infinite cost

  423. has

  424. redeemed

  425. them

  426. why do you

  427. think it's

  428. in the

  429. Bible

  430. in part

  431. it's to

  432. confront us

  433. with the

  434. anguished

  435. nature of

  436. genuine

  437. faith

  438. I think

  439. sometimes

  440. we still

  441. believe

  442. the lie

  443. of the

  444. serpent

  445. that if

  446. we were

  447. really

  448. men and

  449. women of

  450. faith

  451. boys and

  452. girls of

  453. faith

  454. we would

  455. always be

  456. trusting the

  457. Lord

  458. a smile

  459. would always

  460. be in our

  461. faces

  462. life with its

  463. hardships we would

  464. take in our

  465. stride

  466. difficulties would

  467. come and we would

  468. just sail through

  469. them

  470. people would

  471. say how has

  472. your week been

  473. praise the

  474. Lord

  475. it's been

  476. glorious

  477. and you're

  478. thinking

  479. are you

  480. serious

  481. how kind

  482. the Lord

  483. is to

  484. give us

  485. psalms like

  486. psalm 44

  487. to show us

  488. that even

  489. the pen

  490. men of

  491. God

  492. the pen

  493. men of

  494. God

  495. those men

  496. raised up

  497. by God

  498. to pen

  499. the Holy

  500. Scripture

  501. could be so

  502. searingly

  503. honest

  504. with God

  505. awake

  506. awake

  507. why are you

  508. sleeping

  509. oh Lord

  510. rouse

  511. yourself

  512. do not

  513. reject us

  514. forever

  515. be real

  516. with God

  517. be honest

  518. with the

  519. Lord

  520. but then

  521. fourthly

  522. and this

  523. really is

  524. the burden

  525. of my

  526. heart

  527. this evening

  528. notice the

  529. supportive

  530. theology

  531. of genuine

  532. faith

  533. the psalmist

  534. almost without

  535. knowing it

  536. gives two

  537. clues

  538. that first

  539. help to

  540. explain the

  541. churches

  542. and his

  543. desperate

  544. perplexity

  545. and second

  546. that help

  547. believers

  548. to stand

  549. firm

  550. and not

  551. turn

  552. back

  553. number

  554. one

  555. notice

  556. what he

  557. says

  558. in verse

  559. 22

  560. yet

  561. for your

  562. sake

  563. we are

  564. killed

  565. all the

  566. day long

  567. we are

  568. regarded

  569. as sheep

  570. to be

  571. slaughtered

  572. now Paul

  573. quotes those

  574. words

  575. you will

  576. know that

  577. in Romans

    Romans 8:36

  578. 8 verse

  579. 36

  580. in the

  581. middle of

  582. that

  583. glorious

  584. chapter

  585. where he

  586. expounds

  587. for us

  588. the

  589. privileges

  590. and blessings

  591. that belong

  592. to those

  593. for whom

  594. there is no

  595. longer any

  596. condemnation

  597. because they

  598. are in

  599. Christ Jesus

  600. he speaks

  601. of the

  602. blessed

  603. ministry

  604. of the

  605. Holy Spirit

  606. he speaks

  607. of God's

  608. electing

  609. purpose

  610. he speaks

  611. of God

  612. being for

  613. his people

  614. and not

  615. against them

  616. he speaks

  617. of God

  618. not sparing

  619. his own

  620. son

  621. but delivering

  622. him up

  623. for us

  624. all

  625. how will

  626. he not

  627. then with

  628. him freely

  629. give us

  630. all things

  631. he speaks

  632. of Christ

  633. being at

  634. the right

  635. hand

  636. of the

  637. majesty

  638. on high

  639. interceding

  640. for us

  641. and then in

  642. the midst

  643. of that

  644. he says

  645. ah

  646. let me

  647. quote to

  648. you these

  649. words

  650. he doesn't

  651. say that

  652. Psalm 44

  653. yet for

  654. your sake

  655. we are

  656. being killed

  657. all the

  658. day long

  659. we are

  660. regarded as

  661. sheep to

  662. be slaughtered

  663. and when

  664. you read

  665. through

  666. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  667. 8

  668. you are

  669. struck by

  670. this

  671. surprising

  672. turn

  673. in the

  674. flow

  675. of

  676. the

  677. blessings

  678. that the

  679. apostle Paul

  680. is expounding

  681. and explicating

  682. and you think

  683. well why is it

  684. there

  685. why is it

  686. there

  687. it was there

  688. to tell

  689. these Christians

  690. in Rome

  691. that what

  692. they were

  693. suffering

  694. was not

  695. God's

  696. punishment

  697. but battle

  698. scars

  699. for the

  700. saviour's

  701. sake

  702. and that's

  703. what the

  704. psalmist

  705. doesn't yet

  706. get in

  707. the

  708. the hinterland

  709. of redemptive

  710. history

  711. he sees

  712. but dimly

  713. in

  714. shadow lands

  715. if you like

  716. yet for

  717. your sake

  718. we are killed

  719. all the

  720. day long

  721. why has all

  722. this come

  723. upon us

  724. he's actually

  725. told us

  726. for your

  727. sake

  728. the church's

  729. trials and

  730. sufferings

  731. were battle

  732. scars

  733. they were

  734. not signs

  735. of God's

  736. anger

  737. or punishment

  738. they were

  739. battle

  740. scars

  741. in the

  742. cause

  743. of the

  744. kingdom

  745. of God

  746. in this

  747. world

  748. you see

  749. the subtext

  750. of Psalm

  751. 44

  752. is

  753. Genesis

  754. 3

  755. what Paul

  756. was speaking

  757. to the

  758. children

  759. about

  760. that

  761. divinely

  762. instituted

  763. cosmic

  764. conflict

  765. between

  766. the seed

  767. of the

  768. serpent

  769. and the

  770. seed

  771. of women

  772. now there

  773. are times

  774. of course

  775. when the

  776. trials of

  777. the church

  778. is the

  779. result of

  780. unbelief

  781. and disobedience

  782. and rebellion

  783. and faithlessness

  784. but there

  785. are times

  786. when it's

  787. because

  788. we are

  789. standing

  790. against the

  791. world

  792. the flesh

  793. and the

  794. devil

  795. and all

  796. hell

  797. is being

  798. let loose

  799. upon us

  800. I wonder

  801. how many

  802. people

  803. looking at

  804. Job

  805. would have

  806. concluded

  807. this

  808. there is

  809. a righteous

  810. godly

  811. man

  812. not many

  813. I would

  814. think

  815. not many

  816. when God

  817. unites you

  818. to his

  819. son

  820. he

  821. initiates

  822. you

  823. in union

  824. with him

  825. into a

  826. cosmic

  827. conflict

  828. and we

  829. need to

  830. reckon

  831. with the

  832. reality

  833. of the

  834. devil

  835. our

  836. warfare

  837. is not

  838. with flesh

  839. and blood

  840. ultimately

  841. but with

  842. principalities

  843. and powers

  844. with the

  845. hosts of

  846. wickedness

  847. in the

  848. heavenly

  849. places

  850. for your

  851. sake

  852. we're killed

  853. all the

  854. day long

  855. you almost

  856. feel the

  857. Lord

  858. would want

  859. to pause

  860. the psalmist

  861. and say

  862. do you

  863. get it

  864. do you

  865. get it

  866. even out

  867. of your

  868. own lips

  869. why this

  870. has come

  871. upon you

  872. you are

  873. sharing

  874. in an

  875. anticipatory

  876. prototypical

  877. way

  878. in the

  879. sufferings

  880. of your

  881. saviour

  882. the

  883. promised

  884. messiah

  885. Jesus

  886. Christ

  887. but then

  888. secondly

  889. do you

  890. notice

  891. the

  892. psalmist

  893. ends

  894. his

  895. complaint

  896. with a

  897. confession

  898. of faith

  899. he finishes

  900. the psalm

  901. rise up

  902. come to

  903. our help

  904. redeem us

  905. for the

  906. sake of

  907. your

  908. chesed

  909. not latin

  910. but hebrew

  911. chesed

  912. your covenant

  913. love

  914. your unfailing

  915. pledged

  916. in blood

  917. covenant

  918. love

  919. where does

  920. he ultimately

  921. rest his

  922. hope

  923. in the

  924. chesed

  925. of yahweh

  926. in the

  927. covenant

  928. love

  929. and in the

  930. covenant

  931. faithfulness

  932. of god

  933. and what

  934. those closing

  935. words say

  936. to us

  937. is that

  938. in the

  939. deepest

  940. extremities

  941. of our

  942. lives

  943. personal

  944. extremities

  945. familial

  946. extremities

  947. congregational

  948. extremities

  949. we are to

  950. rest the

  951. weight of

  952. all that

  953. we are

  954. on the

  955. character

  956. of god

  957. and on

  958. the grace

  959. of god

  960. as he has

  961. pledged it

  962. to us

  963. in his

  964. covenant

  965. love

  966. in jesus

  967. christ

  968. you see

  969. this

  970. ultimately

  971. is the

  972. triumph

  973. of faith

  974. not that

  975. life is

  976. easy

  977. and sweet

  978. and uncomplicated

  979. and unhindered

  980. and even

  981. but that

  982. we say

  983. lord

  984. in the

  985. midst of

  986. all the

  987. perplexities

  988. and bewilderments

  989. and trials

  990. and troubles

  991. i want to

  992. tell you

  993. this

  994. my hope

  995. rests

  996. on your

  997. steadfast

  998. love

  999. on your

  1000. pledged

  1001. and promised

  1002. covenantal

  1003. secured

  1004. love

  1005. that's

  1006. where my

  1007. hope

  1008. rests

  1009. i can still

  1010. remember

  1011. the day

  1012. i think

  1013. i was about

  1014. 23 years

  1015. of age

  1016. but i remember

  1017. the day

  1018. i was preparing

  1019. a bible study

  1020. for a

  1021. house group

  1022. in

  1023. falkirk

  1024. in central

  1025. scotland

  1026. i was a

  1027. student at

  1028. edinburgh

  1029. university

  1030. studying

  1031. theology

  1032. i'd been

  1033. asked to

  1034. go along

  1035. and the

  1036. passage

  1037. i'd been

  1038. given

  1039. was the

  1040. second half

  1041. of romans

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  1042. chapter 4

  1043. and i have

  1044. a default

  1045. when i'm

  1046. preparing

  1047. john calvin

  1048. is my

  1049. default

  1050. calvin says

  1051. it must be

  1052. right

  1053. well i don't

  1054. mean that

  1055. but i always

  1056. go to

  1057. he's my

  1058. go to

  1059. and i

  1060. remember

  1061. yet

  1062. reading

  1063. these

  1064. words

  1065. calvin

  1066. is commenting

  1067. on the

  1068. faith

  1069. of

  1070. abraham

  1071. abraham

  1072. god

  1073. had

  1074. promised

  1075. abraham

  1076. a son

  1077. and an

  1078. heir

  1079. who would

  1080. be the

  1081. one

  1082. in whom

  1083. the covenant

  1084. promises

  1085. of god

  1086. would continue

  1087. but the

  1088. years

  1089. passed

  1090. no heir

  1091. or son

  1092. appeared

  1093. and paul

  1094. says

  1095. against

  1096. hope

  1097. abraham

  1098. believed

  1099. in hope

  1100. he trusted

  1101. god

  1102. and then

  1103. calvin

  1104. wrote

  1105. these

  1106. words

  1107. thinking of

  1108. abraham

  1109. as the

  1110. years

  1111. passed

  1112. when his

  1113. circumstances

  1114. seemed to

  1115. contradict

  1116. god's

  1117. promise

  1118. calvin

  1119. wrote

  1120. all things

  1121. around us

  1122. are in

  1123. opposition

  1124. to the

  1125. promises

  1126. of god

  1127. he promises

  1128. immortality

  1129. we're

  1130. surrounded

  1131. with

  1132. mortality

  1133. and corruption

  1134. he declares

  1135. that he

  1136. counts as

  1137. just

  1138. we're

  1139. covered

  1140. with

  1141. sins

  1142. he

  1143. testifies

  1144. that he

  1145. is

  1146. propitious

  1147. and kind

  1148. to us

  1149. outward

  1150. judgments

  1151. threaten

  1152. his wrath

  1153. what

  1154. then

  1155. is to

  1156. be done

  1157. calvin

  1158. asks

  1159. we

  1160. must

  1161. with

  1162. closed

  1163. eyes

  1164. pass

  1165. by

  1166. ourselves

  1167. and

  1168. all

  1169. things

  1170. connected

  1171. with

  1172. us

  1173. that

  1174. nothing

  1175. may

  1176. hinder

  1177. or

  1178. prevent

  1179. us

  1180. from

  1181. believing

  1182. that

  1183. god

  1184. is

  1185. true

  1186. !

  1187. I've

  1188. never

  1189. forgotten

  1190. those

  1191. words

  1192. they

  1193. were

  1194. electric

  1195. to me

  1196. when I

  1197. first

  1198. read

  1199. them

  1200. you know

  1201. what he's

  1202. simply

  1203. saying

  1204. not

  1205. bury

  1206. your

  1207. head

  1208. in the

  1209. sand

  1210. but

  1211. he's

  1212. saying

  1213. when

  1214. your

  1215. circumstances

  1216. seem

  1217. to

  1218. mock

  1219. god

  1220. and

  1221. his

  1222. promises

  1223. place

  1224. them

  1225. alongside

  1226. who

  1227. god

  1228. is

  1229. you

  1230. see

  1231. that's

  1232. what

  1233. our

  1234. lord

  1235. jesus

  1236. christ

  1237. did

  1238. when

  1239. he

  1240. endured

  1241. the

  1242. desolation

  1243. and

  1244. curse

  1245. of

  1246. the

  1247. cross

  1248. he

  1249. is

  1250. the

  1251. prototypical

  1252. man

  1253. of

  1254. faith

  1255. and

  1256. yet

  1257. perfect

  1258. man

  1259. of

  1260. faith

  1261. as

  1262. he

  1263. was

  1264. his

  1265. life

  1266. was

  1267. engulfed

  1268. with

  1269. darkness

  1270. he

  1271. is

  1272. the

  1273. one

  1274. ultimately

  1275. that

  1276. Isaiah

    Isaiah 50:10

  1277. 50

  1278. verse

  1279. 10

  1280. points

  1281. to

  1282. when

  1283. it

  1284. says

  1285. that

  1286. when

  1287. we

  1288. walk

  1289. in

  1290. darkness

  1291. and

  1292. have

  1293. no

  1294. light

  1295. I

  1296. don't

  1297. know

  1298. what

  1299. that

  1300. means

  1301. I

  1302. occasionally

  1303. know

  1304. what it

  1305. is to

  1306. walk

  1307. in

  1308. darkness

  1309. but

  1310. to

  1311. have

  1312. no

  1313. light

  1314. no

  1315. pinprick

  1316. of

  1317. light

  1318. I

  1319. remember

  1320. a friend

  1321. of mine

  1322. once

  1323. saying

  1324. to me

  1325. he

  1326. envied

  1327. the

  1328. lampposts

  1329. of

  1330. Glasgow

  1331. because

  1332. they

  1333. had

  1334. light

  1335. he

  1336. felt

  1337. darkness

  1338. just

  1339. shrouded

  1340. him

  1341. and

  1342. it

  1343. was

  1344. for

  1345. our

  1346. saviour

  1347. darkness

  1348. enshrouded

  1349. him

  1350. engulfed

  1351. !

  1352. And

  1353. he

  1354. said

  1355. why

  1356. why

  1357. why

  1358. have

  1359. you

  1360. forsaken

  1361. me

  1362. but

  1363. he

  1364. said

  1365. more

  1366. than

  1367. that

  1368. didn't

  1369. he

  1370. he

  1371. said

  1372. my

  1373. God

  1374. my

  1375. God

  1376. why

  1377. have

  1378. you

  1379. forsaken

  1380. me

  1381. the

  1382. sense

  1383. of the

  1384. fatherhood

  1385. of God

  1386. had been

  1387. eclipsed

  1388. but not

  1389. the

  1390. personal

  1391. pronoun

  1392. was it

  1393. Martin

  1394. Luther

  1395. who

  1396. said

  1397. genuine

  1398. Christianity

  1399. is all

  1400. about

  1401. personal

  1402. pronouns

  1403. you

  1404. see

  1405. you

  1406. and I

  1407. have a

  1408. saviour

  1409. who

  1410. knows

  1411. by

  1412. personal

  1413. experience

  1414. spiritual

  1415. darkness

  1416. we

  1417. have a

  1418. saviour

  1419. who

  1420. knows

  1421. from

  1422. experience

  1423. the

  1424. deep

  1425. sense

  1426. of the

  1427. absence

  1428. of the

  1429. presence

  1430. of God

  1431. we

  1432. have a

  1433. saviour

  1434. for whom

  1435. all the

  1436. lights

  1437. went out

  1438. there

  1439. wasn't

  1440. a

  1441. pinprick

  1442. of

  1443. comfort

  1444. in

  1445. the

  1446. cosmos

  1447. not

  1448. a

  1449. pinprick

  1450. but I

  1451. want to

  1452. say

  1453. this

  1454. even

  1455. as

  1456. the

  1457. face

  1458. of the

  1459. father

  1460. of

  1461. Jesus

  1462. Christ

  1463. was

  1464. hidden

  1465. from

  1466. him

  1467. even

  1468. as

  1469. the

  1470. righteous

  1471. wrath

  1472. of

  1473. God

  1474. was

  1475. being

  1476. poured

  1477. out

  1478. upon

  1479. him

  1480. I

  1481. have

  1482. little

  1483. doubt

  1484. that

  1485. the

  1486. father

  1487. was

  1488. saying

  1489. to

  1490. the

  1491. hosts

  1492. of

  1493. heaven

  1494. and to

  1495. his

  1496. son

  1497. if

  1498. ever

  1499. I

  1500. loved

  1501. thee

  1502. my

  1503. Jesus

  1504. tis

  1505. now

  1506. for

  1507. even

  1508. in the

  1509. cross

  1510. as the

  1511. darkness

  1512. engulfed him

  1513. he

  1514. never

  1515. never

  1516. let

  1517. go

  1518. the

  1519. my

  1520. my

  1521. God

  1522. if

  1523. ever

  1524. I

  1525. love

  1526. thee

  1527. my

  1528. Jesus

  1529. tis

  1530. now

  1531. the

  1532. life of

  1533. faith

  1534. in

  1535. Jesus

  1536. Christ

  1537. is a

  1538. life

  1539. of

  1540. perplexity

  1541. sometimes

  1542. the

  1543. perplexities

  1544. are

  1545. few

  1546. and

  1547. slight

  1548. sometimes

  1549. they

  1550. are

  1551. many

  1552. and

  1553. engulfing

  1554. and

  1555. the

  1556. psalm

  1557. ends

  1558. with

  1559. no

  1560. answer

  1561. did

  1562. you

  1563. notice

  1564. that

  1565. there's

  1566. no

  1567. quick

  1568. fix

  1569. at

  1570. the

  1571. end

  1572. oh

  1573. let

  1574. me

  1575. tell

  1576. you

  1577. psalmist

  1578. let

  1579. me

  1580. tell

  1581. you

  1582. actually

  1583. I'm

  1584. about

  1585. this

  1586. and

  1587. I'm

  1588. about

  1589. that

  1590. you

  1591. get

  1592. that

  1593. in

  1594. the

  1595. book

  1596. of

  1597. Habakkuk

  1598. in a

  1599. sense

  1600. where

  1601. the

  1602. prophet

  1603. begins

  1604. !

  1605. by

  1606. saying

  1607. Lord

  1608. rouse

  1609. yourself

  1610. wake

  1611. up

  1612. why

  1613. have you

  1614. deserted

  1615. us

  1616. and forgotten

  1617. us

  1618. and the

  1619. Lord

  1620. somewhat

  1621. explains

  1622. his ways

  1623. with his

  1624. servant

  1625. but not

  1626. here

  1627. not

  1628. here

  1629. sometimes

  1630. there are

  1631. no answers

  1632. this side

  1633. of glory

  1634. sometimes

  1635. we'll have

  1636. to wait

  1637. for the

  1638. answers

  1639. but we

  1640. wait

  1641. in faith

  1642. maybe

  1643. with many

  1644. tears

  1645. maybe

  1646. with

  1647. Satan

  1648. subtly

  1649. !

  1650. insinuating

  1651. into our

  1652. minds and

  1653. hearts

  1654. curse

  1655. God

  1656. and die

  1657. do you

  1658. think he

  1659. cares

  1660. look

  1661. what's

  1662. happened

  1663. to you

  1664. look

  1665. at your

  1666. hopes

  1667. that are

  1668. smashed

  1669. curse

  1670. God

  1671. and die

  1672. just

  1673. forget

  1674. him

  1675. Lord

  1676. redeem

  1677. us

  1678. according

  1679. to your

  1680. covenant

  1681. love

  1682. that's

  1683. where faith

  1684. places its

  1685. anchor

  1686. you see

  1687. the great

  1688. thing about

  1689. faith is

  1690. not its

  1691. quality

  1692. but its

  1693. object

  1694. the reformers

  1695. were always

  1696. using two

  1697. little words

  1698. to highlight

  1699. what true

  1700. faith is

  1701. extra

  1702. nos

  1703. you better

  1704. laugh

  1705. to finish

  1706. it's

  1707. outside

  1708. of ourselves

  1709. the glory

  1710. of faith

  1711. is not

  1712. its

  1713. quality

  1714. because

  1715. the quality

  1716. of faith

  1717. rises

  1718. it falls

  1719. it comes

  1720. and it

  1721. goes

  1722. one day

  1723. you could

  1724. climb a

  1725. mountain

  1726. and leap

  1727. a wall

  1728. and the next

  1729. day you can

  1730. hardly get

  1731. out of bed

  1732. but the glory

  1733. of faith

  1734. is not

  1735. its quality

  1736. but its

  1737. object

  1738. Jesus

  1739. Christ

  1740. who knows

  1741. what darkness

  1742. is

  1743. and who is

  1744. at the right

  1745. hand of God

  1746. interceding

  1747. forms

  1748. so

  1749. be of

  1750. good cheer

  1751. be of

  1752. good cheer

  1753. God

  1754. loves you

  1755. he will

  1756. never

  1757. deserve

  1758. you

  1759. you may

  1760. yet

  1761. have to

  1762. die

  1763. many

  1764. deaths

  1765. !

  1766. please God

  1767. they will

  1768. all be

  1769. for Jesus

  1770. sake

  1771. let us

  1772. pray

  1773. father we

  1774. bless you

  1775. tonight

  1776. that our

  1777. salvation

  1778. even our

  1779. very lives

  1780. is hid

  1781. with Christ

  1782. in God

  1783. we thank you

  1784. Lord

  1785. that

  1786. troubles

  1787. may disturb

  1788. us

  1789. harm us

  1790. hurt us

  1791. even at

  1792. times

  1793. overwhelm

  1794. us

  1795. that they

  1796. can never

  1797. separate us

  1798. from your

  1799. love

  1800. we want

  1801. to be

  1802. better than

  1803. we are

  1804. we want

  1805. to trust

  1806. you

  1807. Lord

  1808. even in

  1809. our

  1810. tears

  1811. because you

  1812. are the

  1813. God who

  1814. spared not

  1815. your only

  1816. son

  1817. but delivered

  1818. him up

  1819. for us

  1820. all

  1821. bless this

  1822. congregation

  1823. for good

  1824. Lord

  1825. enrich their

  1826. life

  1827. together

  1828. bless above

  1829. and beyond

  1830. all

  1831. his

  1832. and the

  1833. congregations

  1834. asking

  1835. Paul's

  1836. ministry

  1837. may those

  1838. who serve

  1839. and labour

  1840. with him

  1841. do so

  1842. in humility

  1843. in concord

  1844. bless this

  1845. congregation

  1846. Lord

  1847. enrich it

  1848. with your

  1849. presence

  1850. and the

  1851. empowering

  1852. ministry of

  1853. the Holy

  1854. Spirit

  1855. and we

  1856. ask it in

  1857. our

  1858. Savior

  1859. Jesus

  1860. Christ

  1861. name

  1862. Amen
