  1. Well, it's awful, isn't it, when you hear stories of con artists, salesmen, scammers, cold callers, people who prey on the vulnerable and pose as somebody they're not.

  2. ! You've got to watch out for that, haven't you? And if that is the case with your bank details, or your online identity, or your passwords and property, how much more important

  3. is it in spiritual things and in your soul? You might know the history a little bit of the book of Galatians, you can read about it in Acts, chapters 13 and 14,

    Acts 13 chapter mention

  4. and Paul, the apostle, he's on his missionary journeys, isn't he? And he tours this region of towns called Galatia. He sets up some churches there, he sets them up and then moves on,

  5. but within a short time in these churches some problems arise. And we're going to look through the whole letter to the Galatians as a kind of new series over the next few weeks,

  6. and we'll see more about what was the matter. But basically, in a nutshell, they have been conned. Spiritual scammers have been sniffing around the front door of the church,

  7. and they've got into the church. Do you see, he says in verse 6, doesn't he, that they've been led to a different gospel from the one that Paul initially gave to them.

  8. And so he's writing this letter to deal with that issue. And in this intro section, I want you to see with me three things.

  9. Firstly, the gravity of the situation that they are in. The gravity of the situation.

  10. As you pick up the letter to the Galatians in the New Testament, some people think that Paul, he's being quite cold, and he's being quite nasty.

  11. He seems quite prickly, as you read through it. He's pretty touchy.

  12. And it's quite unusual. The tone in the letter is quite unusual. It's not the Paul that we're used to listening to.

  13. There's not much politeness. There are no airs and graces. There's not his usual words of gratitude and thanksgiving for the Christians in Galatia,

  14. like there is in Ephesians or Philippians or even in Corinthians.

  15. The tone is really tense. It's serious. It's pained. He cuts to the chase in verse 6, doesn't he?

  16. I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ.

  17. Later in chapter 3, he calls the Galatians fools.

  18. But don't mistake that tone for coldness.

  19. Because some situations require a harder tone of voice, don't they?

  20. Imagine a child running into the road. You're not going to politely ask them to stop, are you?

  21. You're going to shout, stop! And grab them.

  22. His harshness in the letter reflects the gravity of the situation that they are in.

  23. Because, if you look at verse 7, he says,

  24. There are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

  25. Our baby, he's called Kit.

  26. And he's three weeks old and he loves drinking his mother's milk.

  27. He's really good at feeding.

  28. But imagine that Emma and I, we go away for the night and we get a babysitter in.

  29. We get one of you lot to come and look after him for the evening.

  30. And we get the milk all set up in the kitchen, lined up, ready for you to feed him.

  31. And it's all sterilised and it's pure.

  32. And it's ready to go.

  33. And all you've got to do is deliver it.

  34. As is.

  35. But when we get home, you say to us,

  36. Thanks for the milk, it was really good.

  37. But I wanted to liven it up a bit.

  38. So I thought I'd add some iron brew to the milk.

  39. Is that alright?

  40. It just needed that fizz factor.

  41. So I've added some Coca-Cola as well.

  42. I've enhanced it.

  43. Just a little bit.

  44. Just a few drops.

  45. Well, we'd be mortified, wouldn't we?

  46. You haven't enhanced it at all.

  47. You've ruined it.

  48. You've changed the milk and you've damaged the child.

  49. And that is what has happened to the Galatians.

  50. Notice how he describes the fake message that they have been duped by.

  51. Verse 8 and verse 9.

  52. He says twice, doesn't it?

  53. It is a gospel that is now contrary.

  54. A gospel contrary to the one that we preached.

  55. Just a little tweak.

  56. Just a little addition.

  57. But it's now totally in opposition to what Paul taught them.

  58. For Paul, that the genuine gospel message of Christianity,

  59. delivered by him originally,

  60. the real McCoy, the good news of Jesus Christ,

  61. is so good and so pure

  62. that if it's tampered with in any way at all,

  63. it is utterly ruined.

  64. And it's utterly contrary to the truth.

  65. It's not just mainly truth, is it?

  66. With a bit of untruth added in.

  67. The whole thing becomes contaminated.

  68. And so you can't tweak the Christian message

  69. for a different audience.

  70. You cannot fine-tune it or perfect it.

  71. It's already perfect.

  72. It's actually beyond the realm of criticism.

  73. And you can't do that without absolutely ruining it.

  74. Without damaging people with it.

  75. It's actually more like putting a bit of bleach

  76. in the baby's milk bottle, isn't it?

  77. For Paul.

  78. And so he's livid.

  79. He is worried.

  80. Very worried about the gravity of the situation.

  81. Of them turning to a modified gospel.

  82. So that's the gravity of the situation.

  83. But secondly, look with me at the guile of the con artists.

  84. The guile, the trickery of the con artists.

  85. He calls them troublemakers, doesn't he, in verse 7.

  86. As we go through the letter over the next few weeks,

  87. we'll see that the particular things that they were adding

  88. to the gospel that Paul gave were to do with the function of God's law.

  89. To get right with God.

  90. Do you know that the message of the Bible has always been

  91. that being right with God

  92. and being in a relationship with him

  93. is a gift that is given and not earned.

  94. You and I can never belong to God

  95. because we obey him.

  96. But we do obey him

  97. because we belong to God

  98. through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

  99. As a gift.

  100. But the troublemakers,

  101. what they're doing is that they're flipping that around.

  102. Yes, there was faith in Jesus Christ

  103. but they wanted to add a little bit more.

  104. Just a little bit of fizz.

  105. It was Jesus plus something else.

  106. And certain religious ceremonial activities

  107. were added in, like circumcision, we'll see.

  108. To be right with God.

  109. And it was very subtle.

  110. Very clever.

  111. The guile of the troublemakers.

  112. It was very attractive.

  113. And we know that

  114. because of the way that Paul describes their message.

  115. And look at that key verse in verse 6 again.

  116. It's really interesting.

  117. What he calls their message,

  118. he calls it a different gospel.

  119. A different gospel.

  120. He says,

  121. I'm going to use that fantastic word

  122. that is loaded with great meaning

  123. to describe what they are doing

  124. but I'm going to use that word

  125. to highlight how clever they are.

  126. It's likely that the troublemakers

  127. were calling themselves Christians.

  128. They preached gospel.

  129. It looked legit.

  130. It looked gospel-like.

  131. They had gospel meetings

  132. and gospel-driven churches.

  133. They led gospel ministries.

  134. Published gospel tracts.

  135. They sang gospel songs.

  136. Read gospel books.

  137. That's the name they used for them anyway.

  138. And the use of that word

  139. that Paul is using there,

  140. he's being a bit sarcastic, isn't he?

  141. Because in verse 7 he says,

  142. well, not that there is another gospel.

  143. But the point is that

  144. what they are doing,

  145. it looks Christian.

  146. It uses gospel language.

  147. Maybe they talked about Jesus Christ

  148. and his church

  149. and the cross

  150. and the resurrection.

  151. All the right words might be there.

  152. If you go to one of their meetings,

  153. there won't be a poster

  154. outside the church door saying,

  155. welcome to the meeting

  156. with visiting heretic,

  157. the reverend such and such,

  158. leader of false gospel ministry.

  159. You're just not going to see it.

  160. And actually what made them more dangerous

  161. was it seemed like

  162. they were advancing the gospel.

  163. It was as if they were being more holy.

  164. It was Jesus plus.

  165. It seemed like they were more faithful.

  166. They were enhancing the gospel message

  167. that Paul gave.

  168. That you've got faith in Christ.

  169. But we want to go one step further.

  170. And we want you to come with us

  171. and do this little ceremony

  172. or this little law.

  173. Paul's got a message, yes,

  174. and we love him for it.

  175. But we've been around

  176. a lot longer than Paul.

  177. And we want you to go further with Jesus.

  178. And it is, isn't it,

  179. how the best con artists work

  180. by making the bad stuff they do

  181. look really good.

  182. That is what the Bible tells us

  183. the devil does.

  184. That he makes himself look like

  185. an angel of light.

  186. So that when he's doing bad things,

  187. when he's adding bleach into the milk,

  188. it looks really good.

  189. We don't have physical persecution

  190. so much, do we, as Christians,

  191. if you are a Christian

  192. living for Jesus in this country.

  193. And we're grateful for that.

  194. That has been done in the past,

  195. hasn't it, in this country.

  196. The devil has used that tactic.

  197. But I don't think he does that

  198. as much in our country, anyway,

  199. at the moment.

  200. But in a way,

  201. what he does is even more dangerous.

  202. Because the devil is trying

  203. to destroy the true gospel

  204. and he does it

  205. under the disguise

  206. of advancing the gospel.

  207. Like the troublemakers,

  208. he poses

  209. as a gospel advancer.

  210. He says,

  211. I'm not going to silence the gospel.

  212. I'm not going to try

  213. and kill Christians off.

  214. I'll just give them

  215. a better gospel.

  216. I'll give them another one.

  217. I'll try and get them

  218. to think of a better gospel.

  219. that there's a whole world

  220. out there

  221. beyond simply trusting

  222. in Jesus Christ.

  223. Whether it's giving money

  224. or taking mass

  225. or not eating chocolate

  226. over Lent

  227. or whatever.

  228. Whatever it is

  229. I can get them to do

  230. that is additional,

  231. whether it's superstition

  232. or merit

  233. or brownie points.

  234. However silly it is,

  235. it doesn't matter.

  236. If I can get them

  237. to think they need more,

  238. that Jesus isn't quite enough,

  239. I can even peddle them

  240. as enhancements

  241. to the gospel,

  242. as Jesus plus,

  243. if I can do that

  244. then actually I can ruin it.

  245. Because Jesus plus anything else

  246. equals nothing actually.

  247. And actually I think

  248. that is the tactic

  249. he's using in many churches today

  250. sadly.

  251. The calm is happening

  252. It is not Islam

  253. or secularism

  254. or atheism

  255. or pluralism

  256. that threatens

  257. the true gospel

  258. most.

  259. It's not these

  260. obvious false messages

  261. but it is the temptation

  262. of a better gospel.

  263. Of Jesus plus

  264. something else.

  265. And so that is the guile

  266. of these false gospel advances.

  267. The gravity of the situation,

  268. the guile

  269. and thirdly

  270. the Galatians gullibility.

  271. The Galatians gullibility.

  272. A friend spoke about

  273. the time he'd been on holiday

  274. to a country

  275. in the Near East

  276. and it was one of these

  277. cities with a fantastic

  278. tourist industry

  279. and he knew that

  280. going there

  281. he had to keep his wits

  282. about him

  283. for pickpockets

  284. and people like that.

  285. At one point

  286. he got lost

  287. trying to find his way

  288. back to the train station

  289. so he asked the local

  290. for directions

  291. and the local man

  292. immediately in Helford

  293. not only to give him

  294. directions

  295. but to lead him

  296. to the train station.

  297. He would take him there.

  298. I know a shortcut

  299. he said

  300. leading him through

  301. the back alleys

  302. and the back streets

  303. until they arrived

  304. at their final destination

  305. which did not look

  306. at all familiar.

  307. There was not a train

  308. or a platform

  309. in sight

  310. and it turned out

  311. to be a shop

  312. that the guide's brother

  313. owned selling rugs

  314. to tourists.

  315. Come in

  316. he said.

  317. He'd been duped.

  318. He'd been conned.

  319. He'd been led

  320. in a different direction

  321. and he was

  322. an experienced

  323. traveller.

  324. He'd gone to this

  325. place knowing

  326. you've got to keep

  327. your wits about you.

  328. He wasn't stupid

  329. but that is why

  330. cons work

  331. isn't it?

  332. Cons work

  333. for people

  334. who think

  335. they're not going

  336. to be conned.

  337. And that is why

  338. this letter

  339. is as relevant

  340. today as it was

  341. then because

  342. as hard as it sounds

  343. for you and me

  344. we are as gullible

  345. as the Galatians

  346. were.

  347. They are in a

  348. grave situation

  349. and we may be

  350. closer to it

  351. than we think.

  352. We are

  353. in as much

  354. risk as they

  355. were

  356. of turning

  357. to a different

  358. gospel

  359. of turning

  360. to a gospel

  361. that supplements

  362. the basics

  363. of faith

  364. in Jesus

  365. with other

  366. stuff.

  367. We are.

  368. we really

  369. are.

  370. And we

  371. won't see

  372. that easily

  373. will we

  374. when we're

  375. in it.

  376. But we're

  377. just as at

  378. risk of

  379. losing why

  380. the good

  381. news of the

  382. gospel is

  383. good news

  384. at all.

  385. Of knowing

  386. that Jesus

  387. death

  388. verse 4

  389. Jesus who

  390. gave himself

  391. for our sins

  392. to deliver

  393. us

  394. is enough

  395. for you to

  396. be free

  397. to enjoy

  398. God

  399. and to

  400. live for

  401. him without

  402. fear.

  403. We are

  404. just as gullible

  405. on this.

  406. Look at

  407. what happened

  408. to them.

  409. They've had

  410. Paul the

  411. great apostle

  412. the great

  413. master theologian.

  414. Look at the

  415. start they've

  416. had as

  417. churches.

  418. The theologian

  419. on grace

  420. and on the

  421. atonement

  422. that look

  423. what they've

  424. done in

  425. verse 6

  426. I'm astonished

  427. that you've

  428. so quickly

  429. deserted

  430. him who

  431. called you

  432. in the

  433. grace of

  434. Christ.

  435. verse 9

  436. we've said

  437. it before

  438. so we

  439. say it

  440. again

  441. it's not

  442. the first

  443. time that

  444. he's warned

  445. them about

  446. this.

  447. This isn't

  448. just a little

  449. blip

  450. it's a

  451. perennial

  452. problem isn't

  453. it?

  454. He knows

  455. how gullible

  456. they are

  457. and how

  458. easy it

  459. is to

  460. veer off

  461. and how

  462. quickly

  463. they've

  464. done that

  465. and those

  466. harsh words

  467. in verse 6

  468. they might

  469. not be

  470. written to

  471. you and

  472. me in

  473. 2019

  474. but they

  475. are written

  476. for you

  477. and for

  478. me.

  479. Adding

  480. other things

  481. on to

  482. trusting in

  483. Jesus is

  484. for us

  485. folks a

  486. constant

  487. and easy

  488. and quick

  489. mistake to

  490. make.

  491. I think it

  492. is pretty

  493. safe to say

  494. that I can

  495. almost guarantee

  496. that the

  497. moment we

  498. leave this

  499. building

  500. and even

  501. in this

  502. moment right

  503. now we

  504. are

  505. at risk

  506. of this.

  507. That we

  508. are gullible

  509. we are

  510. susceptible

  511. to the

  512. claim that

  513. the gospel

  514. is about

  515. earning

  516. salvation.

  517. Our idea

  518. of Christianity

  519. is a kind

  520. of performance

  521. related pay

  522. system isn't

  523. it from

  524. God.

  525. We may

  526. say that

  527. Christ is

  528. everything

  529. but deep

  530. down maybe

  531. we live as

  532. if he is

  533. insufficient

  534. and we've

  535. got to top

  536. it up a

  537. little bit

  538. more.

  539. God

  540. and it

  541. can be

  542. doing good

  543. things isn't

  544. it that

  545. is good

  546. to do.

  547. Acts of

  548. social justice

  549. and praying

  550. and fasting

  551. and picking up

  552. litter and

  553. reading the

  554. Bible and

  555. evangelism.

  556. Good things

  557. to do.

  558. But we

  559. forget don't

  560. we so often

  561. that we

  562. don't obey

  563. that we

  564. might earn

  565. and belong

  566. to God

  567. but we

  568. already belong

  569. in Christ

  570. and so

  571. we obey.

  572. So I

  573. can have a

  574. bad week

  575. can't I

  576. and I

  577. can have a

  578. good week

  579. where I've

  580. done lots

  581. of good

  582. stuff

  583. but actually

  584. I'm all

  585. over the

  586. place

  587. and I

  588. kind of

  589. think of

  590. God

  591. as having

  592. this kind

  593. of emotional

  594. wreck

  595. by the end

  596. of it.

  597. And Christian

  598. meetings can

  599. be full of

  600. that too

  601. can't they?

  602. We look at

  603. each other

  604. and we make

  605. comparisons

  606. but if you

  607. start thinking

  608. that that is

  609. the way the

  610. gospel works

  611. you've got a

  612. different gospel.

  613. Jesus plus

  614. anything else

  615. equals nothing

  616. at all

  617. and the gospel

  618. is ruined.

  619. Just as we

  620. close let me

  621. say that these

  622. meetings on a

  623. Tuesday

  624. as you

  625. listen to

  626. God's word

  627. preached maybe

  628. on a Sunday

  629. and in other

  630. meetings

  631. this meeting

  632. on a Tuesday

  633. is probably

  634. the most

  635. dangerous place

  636. that you can

  637. be in Ealing

  638. right now.

  639. As you

  640. come, as

  641. people come

  642. here and

  643. the Bible

  644. is opened

  645. and the

  646. gospel is

  647. spoken out

  648. prayerfully

  649. and faithfully

  650. we are not

  651. infallible

  652. people are

  653. we?

  654. I am not

  655. the Apostle

  656. Paul.

  657. And there

  658. is always a

  659. risk isn't

  660. there?

  661. that the

  662. true gospel

  663. is so

  664. good and

  665. pure

  666. there is

  667. always the

  668. risk that

  669. we could

  670. ruin it

  671. that if we

  672. don't tell

  673. it faithfully

  674. and if we

  675. should ever

  676. tell you

  677. or imply

  678. that you

  679. need more

  680. than faith

  681. in Jesus

  682. actually you'd

  683. be better off

  684. not coming

  685. at all

  686. honestly

  687. you would

  688. be better

  689. off not

  690. coming

  691. if we

  692. ever try

  693. and enhance

  694. the gospel

  695. in that

  696. way

  697. tell us

  698. and then

  699. do not

  700. touch us

  701. with a

  702. barge pole

  703. Paul is

  704. much stronger

  705. than that

  706. isn't he?

  707. Verse 8

  708. verse 9

  709. if anyone

  710. does that

  711. let him

  712. be

  713. accursed

  714. it's the

  715. same idea

  716. being

  717. accursed

  718. the same

  719. idea as

  720. in the

  721. Old Testament

  722. when

  723. people

  724. dropped down

  725. dead

  726. didn't they

  727. when they

  728. went in

  729. the temple

  730. and they

  731. were unclean

  732. or they

  733. touched the

  734. ark of the

  735. covenant

  736. if anyone

  737. does that

  738. let him

  739. drop down

  740. dead

  741. Paul says

  742. even if

  743. it's an

  744. angel from

  745. heaven

  746. even if

  747. it's me

  748. says the

  749. apostle Paul

  750. that is how

  751. grave it is

  752. to add

  753. anything to

  754. Christ

  755. nothing matters

  756. more than the

  757. purity of the

  758. message of

  759. grace

  760. of salvation

  761. being a

  762. gift

  763. so let me

  764. say don't

  765. get taken

  766. in by

  767. the con

  768. and it

  769. can come

  770. in different

  771. ways

  772. can't it

  773. because we

  774. can't easily

  775. see it

  776. happening

  777. in our

  778. context

  779. let us pray

  780. that as we

  781. go through

  782. this letter

  783. we would

  784. recognise

  785. our own

  786. gullibility

  787. when it

  788. comes to

  789. good works

  790. and earning

  791. salvation

  792. and obedience

  793. and to

  794. recognise

  795. those areas

  796. in our lives

  797. where we

  798. battle with

  799. that

  800. where we

  801. get confused

  802. on that

  803. because

  804. Jesus Christ

  805. plus

  806. anything at

  807. all

  808. really is

  809. nothing

  810. let's pray
