  1. And turn to Ephesians chapter 6. If you were here last week, I'm going to take a new series just on Christian armor, looking at the subject of spiritual warfare. I've been reading, as I said last week, William Gurnall.

    Ephesians 6 chapter mention

  2. These kind of three great volumes, this English Puritan on Christian warfare. And nothing I'm going to say over these weeks is going to be original. All the best insights will be William Gurnall's. So don't read those books until I'm finished.

  3. I'm going to come back to the series. Chris Roberts is going to preach in the next little bit. And then we'll come back to the series in the summer. But do listen to last week.

  4. So I want us to begin to look in the armor. There's lots of different ways I think of preaching the Bible. Normally we go through a passage, working through a book.

  5. But I think it is helpful sometimes to take an in-depth look at a passage and to kind of dig down and see the sweep of Scripture behind it. And that's what we're going to try and do in this series.

  6. So we're looking at the resources that God has provided for us. And so the first handpiece of armor is in chapter 6 and verse 14.

  7. He says, stand, therefore. I'd remember the three stands from 13 and 14. Keep standing. I'm having fastened on the belt of truth.

  8. That's just what I want to look at tonight. Having fastened on the belt of truth.

  9. I don't know if you have a routine in the morning. When you get up in the morning to get dressed.

  10. And I'm not going to tell you my routine. But I always get dressed in the same way. And so do you. I'm sure you do.

  11. Whatever routine you use when you get dressed. I'm pretty certain you don't put your belt on first. Do you?

  12. That would be particularly odd if you wear a belt.

  13. And a belt is normally something you put on last, isn't it?

  14. Something that holds the rest of our clothing together.

  15. And yet here, when the apostle describes the Christian's dress.

  16. The Christian's protective clothing, his armor.

  17. He mentions first of all, can you see it?

  18. The belt of truth.

  19. Now as a matter of fact, that's how Roman soldiers dressed in South of Battle.

  20. They would put their belt on first for the simple reason.

  21. And then it was in a way a kind of foundation.

  22. Garment.

  23. Everything else was fastened to it.

  24. The breastplate of righteousness.

  25. The breastplate was fastened to the belt.

  26. You couldn't wear the breastplate.

  27. Unless you had your belt of truth on.

  28. The sword was probably stabbed to the belt.

  29. And for that reason, you'd have to put the belt on first.

  30. And another reason is, apparently in those days,

  31. they were loose tunics.

  32. Kind of like an old-fashioned nightgown.

  33. A loose, flowing garment.

  34. So before you're going to fight,

  35. and before you're going to run and charge at the enemy,

  36. the first thing you'd have to do is fasten in

  37. this loose, flowing garment.

  38. You fasten in your tunic.

  39. And that's what the belt is for.

  40. It was to pick up the loose, flowing garment

  41. and fasten it

  42. so they were ready for action.

  43. Now again, you see the picture again through Scripture.

  44. You go to Exodus.

  45. Do you remember the Passover?

  46. And do you remember how they were to eat the Passover?

  47. In the Old Testament,

  48. the people, they were told to eat it

  49. with their belt on.

  50. They were to gird up their loins.

  51. They were to gird up their garments.

  52. And they were to eat the Passover

  53. with their belts on

  54. and with their sword in their hand.

  55. Their staff in their hand.

  56. They're told to eat that meal,

  57. ready to move at a moment's notice.

  58. And Jesus picks up the same idea in the Gospels

  59. in Luke 12, 35.

  60. He uses the same picture.

  61. Tells his disciples that

  62. to be ready for action at a moment's notice.

  63. And again, he's picking up on Exodus 12,

  64. on the Passover.

  65. And he says there,

  66. kind of gird up your loins.

  67. They're to be ready at a moment's notice.

  68. Apostle Peter,

  69. in his first epistle,

  70. he calls on them to kind of gird up,

  71. to fasten,

  72. to gird up the loins of their minds.

  73. The ESV misses it.

  74. It's exactly the same picture

  75. that Paul is bringing before us now.

  76. And it's a picture of preparing,

  77. of preparation.

  78. There is a sense, isn't there,

  79. where the belt of truth

  80. isn't actually a part of the armour.

  81. in the way that the other pieces are.

  82. It's preparatory for the fight.

  83. And the first thing we've got to do

  84. before anything else,

  85. is we've got to make sure,

  86. can you see verse 14?

  87. We have a belt of truth on.

  88. Our lives are girded by the truth.

  89. Now, a few recent commentators

  90. on what does this mean?

  91. What does this belt of truth mean?

  92. They're a little bit puzzled.

  93. There are some who suggest,

  94. well, it's just the gospel.

  95. It's just the gospel

  96. that he must be talking about.

  97. Because he's describing for us

  98. the armour of God.

  99. And he must be, therefore,

  100. speaking about something

  101. that God himself provides.

  102. And most people

  103. take it as a reference

  104. to the gospel itself.

  105. But the problem is,

  106. in verse 14,

  107. is there's no definite article.

  108. Did you spot that?

  109. Paul doesn't think,

  110. put on the belt of the truth.

  111. And he uses the indefinite article.

  112. He says, no,

  113. just put on the belt of truth.

  114. There are others

  115. who notice that,

  116. and they go to the other extreme,

  117. and they say,

  118. well, he's only talking about truth

  119. in a general way.

  120. Now, he's talking about being true,

  121. about being honest,

  122. and about being sincere,

  123. and about being open.

  124. And lots of lots of commentators

  125. interpret it in that way.

  126. In terms of sincerity,

  127. and openness,

  128. and honesty.

  129. But it seems to me

  130. that we shouldn't really take

  131. either of those ways

  132. solely looking at the passage.

  133. And we must take it

  134. at face value.

  135. And we must take it

  136. as it reads.

  137. And I think we need

  138. to understand truth

  139. in its widest possible sense.

  140. Now, that includes

  141. gospel truth, doesn't it?

  142. But it includes the truth

  143. that is in Jesus Christ,

  144. but it's much, much wider than that.

  145. And I think it's important

  146. for us to see it in that way.

  147. And Paul is saying,

  148. if you're going to stand

  149. in the evil day,

  150. if you will stand

  151. in the warfare

  152. against the devil,

  153. that if you are in Christ,

  154. you are involved in,

  155. you need an accurate perception

  156. of the way things are.

  157. Well, I think that's

  158. where we need to begin.

  159. That if we're going to stand

  160. against the evil one,

  161. then the first thing we need

  162. is an accurate perception

  163. of the way things really are.

  164. We need to know the truth,

  165. firstly.

  166. You see, that is where

  167. the devil attacks us,

  168. isn't it?

  169. That is his favourite

  170. and most successful

  171. line of attack.

  172. Children, do you remember,

  173. that is how he ruined

  174. the human race.

  175. That's how he ruined

  176. Adam and Eve

  177. in the Garden of Eden.

  178. And so we find ourselves

  179. in the state that we're in,

  180. this fall in the state

  181. we've been talking about

  182. with the children

  183. for the last few weeks.

  184. That was his line of attack,

  185. was it?

  186. Eve in the garden.

  187. He says, do you remember,

  188. has God really said?

  189. What Eve should have done,

  190. of course,

  191. was to say,

  192. yes, God did really say.

  193. And that's good enough for me.

  194. She should have put on

  195. the belt of truth,

  196. shouldn't she?

  197. But instead of that,

  198. she began to listen

  199. to the devil.

  200. And the devil is a master

  201. at distorting truth

  202. and distorting reality.

  203. Is that how it really is?

  204. Says the devil to Eve.

  205. Surely it's not like that,

  206. is it?

  207. It's not that extreme.

  208. You know, Genesis 3.

  209. And if you and I

  210. have to stand against the devil,

  211. then the first thing

  212. we have to do

  213. is to put on the belt of truth.

  214. And I want to try

  215. and help you to do that tonight

  216. in the most practical way I can.

  217. And to give you a few examples

  218. of what does it mean

  219. to face the devil

  220. in this way.

  221. The first thing you have to do

  222. in any situation,

  223. and it seems to me

  224. in any situation at all,

  225. is to ask,

  226. what is true?

  227. What is true?

  228. That's the first thing

  229. I want to ask this week.

  230. Whether it's in the church,

  231. or in the world,

  232. or in our families,

  233. whether it's in work,

  234. whatever context you're in,

  235. you and I are not

  236. to lose touch with reality.

  237. You need to ask the question,

  238. what is true?

  239. In every situation.

  240. We're first to ask ourselves,

  241. what is true?

  242. Because the devil is a master

  243. at distorting reality.

  244. Do you remember

  245. what the Apostle Paul says here?

  246. In verse 14,

  247. he says,

  248. this is the first thing

  249. you've got to do.

  250. Once you've done that,

  251. you can put on

  252. the breastplate of righteousness.

  253. And a Roman soldier,

  254. as I said before,

  255. couldn't put on

  256. his breastplate of righteousness

  257. and didn't put his belt on.

  258. It was impossible.

  259. And you and I

  260. cannot,

  261. and we will not

  262. ever be able to do

  263. what is right,

  264. unless we know

  265. what is true.

  266. So let me give you

  267. a simple illustration.

  268. Let me imagine

  269. you've got a teenage son

  270. or a teenage daughter.

  271. And you've laid down the law

  272. and you say,

  273. well yes,

  274. you can go up with your friends,

  275. but you have to be in by

  276. eleven.

  277. Half time.

  278. Half time.

  279. And she comes in

  280. at two in the morning.

  281. What's your immediate reaction?

  282. Well,

  283. your immediate reaction,

  284. if you've said,

  285. come in at half ten

  286. and she comes in at two,

  287. is to hit the roof.

  288. To fly into a rage.

  289. And before you know it,

  290. there's a blazing row,

  291. isn't it?

  292. And you've got real problems.

  293. Well,

  294. what's the first thing

  295. you've got to do

  296. in that situation?

  297. Are you going to

  298. establish the truth?

  299. Why has he or she

  300. come in at two o'clock

  301. in the morning?

  302. Well,

  303. the facts,

  304. it may not be

  305. what it looks like.

  306. So the first question,

  307. if I'm going to avoid

  308. damaging a relationship,

  309. if I'm going to avoid

  310. doing the wrong thing,

  311. the first thing

  312. I've got to ask is,

  313. what is true?

  314. I could have called

  315. the belt of truth.

  316. What are the facts?

  317. And there may be

  318. a simple and innocent

  319. explanation of what is true.

  320. Because the devil

  321. always wants you and I

  322. to act

  323. without considering

  324. what is true.

  325. But if you're going to

  326. do the right thing

  327. in any situation,

  328. first of all,

  329. don't discover the truth.

  330. let me give you

  331. another example.

  332. One of the most

  333. damaging things in

  334. church life in the UK

  335. in the life of the church

  336. are problems in

  337. relationships between

  338. Christians.

  339. And you know,

  340. don't you,

  341. how easily these things

  342. can arise in church life.

  343. Someone says something

  344. quite innocently,

  345. they don't mean anything

  346. by it at all,

  347. but it is

  348. misconstrued.

  349. Someone says something

  350. quite innocently,

  351. they don't mean anything

  352. about it,

  353. but it's misconstrued.

  354. Or you overhear

  355. something,

  356. or someone passes

  357. on something

  358. that somebody else

  359. said,

  360. and you begin

  361. to brood on it.

  362. Suppose you're day,

  363. suppose you're week,

  364. suppose you're sleep.

  365. And before you know it,

  366. you're living with it,

  367. it's day and night,

  368. you're dreaming about it,

  369. and the devil has got in.

  370. And you know,

  371. if you know church life

  372. at all,

  373. you will know how

  374. these things can blow up

  375. out of all proportion.

  376. And before you know it,

  377. people are beginning

  378. to take sides,

  379. and there's a split

  380. in the church,

  381. and the work of the

  382. gospel is ruined

  383. in the lives of the

  384. neighbourhood,

  385. and in the lives

  386. of the children

  387. of that church.

  388. And the credibility

  389. of the church's witness

  390. and message is gone.

  391. And all because

  392. you and I have not

  393. put on the belt of truth.

  394. All because we go

  395. about our daily lives

  396. or our church lives

  397. without wearing

  398. the belt of truth.

  399. If we were wearing

  400. the belt of truth

  401. and we heard something,

  402. we wouldn't brood over it,

  403. would we?

  404. Because we would know

  405. the truth of God's word,

  406. it tells us,

  407. that love

  408. thinks no evil.

  409. And so we don't

  410. misconstrue

  411. what people say.

  412. We don't put the

  413. worst possible

  414. construction on what

  415. people say.

  416. If we're Christians,

  417. if we have the belt

  418. of truth around us,

  419. do you remember,

  420. love thinks no evil.

  421. Love is patient,

  422. love is kind.

  423. David Watson,

  424. not my father-in-law,

  425. the kind of church

  426. of Angelus

  427. who died in the

  428. Sonties.

  429. He's got a book

  430. on Christian warfare,

  431. it's not really very good,

  432. but he's got a good

  433. little story in it.

  434. And he tells the story

  435. of a missionary,

  436. a young missionary

  437. who went out

  438. to the mission field

  439. and she was put

  440. with an older missionary

  441. who had been on the

  442. mission field

  443. for about 30 years.

  444. And this older

  445. missionary had become

  446. kind of

  447. spiritually fossilised.

  448. This older missionary,

  449. she had become

  450. hard

  451. and cynical

  452. and very difficult

  453. to live with.

  454. And she made

  455. that poor

  456. new missionary,

  457. that poor girl's

  458. life of misery

  459. to the point

  460. where the girl

  461. was really questioning

  462. whether she should

  463. stay on the mission field.

  464. Do you know

  465. how the situation

  466. changed?

  467. Every day

  468. that young girl,

  469. she got out

  470. 1 Corinthians 13

  471. and she prayed

  472. through it.

  473. She said,

  474. it's impossible

  475. Lord to live

  476. with this woman.

  477. But she read

  478. through 1 Corinthians 13

  479. and she prayed

  480. through it

  481. and for a whole year

  482. every day

  483. she put on

  484. the belt of truth.

  485. she tried

  486. to live

  487. with that woman

  488. according to

  489. God's word.

  490. 1 Corinthians 13

  491. and by the end

  492. of the year

  493. the situation

  494. had been

  495. wonderfully transformed.

  496. And they were

  497. actually quite

  498. a useful partnership.

  499. They're trouble

  500. with us

  501. very often

  502. and the reason

  503. why the devil

  504. gets into

  505. church situations

  506. very often

  507. is because

  508. we're not

  509. wearing the belt of truth.

  510. We can quote

  511. scripture

  512. but we don't wear it.

  513. And if I'm

  514. thinking wrongly

  515. of a fellow

  516. brother or sister

  517. in our church

  518. I'm not wearing

  519. the belt of truth

  520. because love

  521. thinks no evil.

  522. Let me give you

  523. another kind of example.

  524. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  525. You know that great

  526. chapter we read it?

  527. And in Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  528. it's a great chapter

  529. on assurance

  530. and Paul there

  531. is dealing

  532. with this

  533. whole question

  534. in his own

  535. personal life.

  536. It's one of

  537. the great chapters

  538. isn't it?

  539. Dealing with assurance.

  540. How we know

  541. that we're saved.

  542. God wants you

  543. and I to enjoy

  544. our salvation.

  545. He wants us

  546. to be sure.

  547. He doesn't want you

  548. to go through life

  549. looking over your shoulder.

  550. He wants you

  551. to be sure

  552. that you are

  553. in Christ

  554. and he wants you

  555. to enjoy it.

  556. And Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  557. is a great chapter

  558. in the Bible

  559. dealing with this

  560. whole question

  561. of how do I know

  562. that I'm in Christ?

  563. And that is

  564. one of the places

  565. isn't it?

  566. Where the devil

  567. is always attacking

  568. you and I.

  569. At that level.

  570. The devil wants

  571. to spoil it for us.

  572. The devil wants

  573. to rob you

  574. of your assurance.

  575. The devil is described

  576. as the accuser

  577. of the brethren.

  578. He's always coming

  579. with accusations

  580. if you're a Christian

  581. tonight.

  582. You'll know that.

  583. The devil is always

  584. accusing you.

  585. He comes to you

  586. and he says

  587. you'll never last.

  588. That's what he says

  589. to newcomers.

  590. That's what he says

  591. to young people.

  592. He says you'll never

  593. last in school.

  594. You'll never make it.

  595. You'll never send.

  596. It's a flash in the pan.

  597. What if this happens?

  598. Or what if that happens?

  599. You'll never cope.

  600. The apostle Paul knew that.

  601. And the devil

  602. had come to him

  603. in that way

  604. and so he buckles

  605. on the truth

  606. and he says to me

  607. we know that in all things

  608. God works together

  609. for the good

  610. of those who love him.

  611. Who are called

  612. according to his purpose.

  613. The devil is saying

  614. you'll never cope

  615. if this happens

  616. or that happens.

  617. It will destroy you.

  618. No says the apostle.

  619. He says no

  620. we know

  621. that whatever happens

  622. to us

  623. it is for the good

  624. of those who love God.

  625. And so the devil

  626. comes back to him

  627. and says

  628. you're not a real Christian

  629. but for your life.

  630. Look at the kind of person

  631. you are.

  632. How can you possibly

  633. say you're a Christian?

  634. What does Paul say?

  635. Well in Romans

  636. chapter 18

  637. verse 31

  638. he says

  639. what should we say

  640. to these things

  641. if God be for us

  642. who can be against us?

  643. And then verse 33

  644. who will bring any charge

  645. any accusation

  646. against God's elect

  647. it's God who justifies.

  648. It's not if Paul is saying

  649. I'm not going to justify

  650. myself to you

  651. it is God who justifies.

  652. Who is going to bring

  653. any charge

  654. against those

  655. whom God has chosen to save?

  656. It is God who justifies

  657. and so the devil

  658. comes back to him.

  659. And the devil

  660. accuses him

  661. and says

  662. you've been a total failure

  663. and Paul's answer

  664. is in verse 34

  665. he says

  666. who is it to condemn?

  667. You can almost hear

  668. the devil talking to him

  669. between the lines

  670. of Romans 8

  671. The devil comes back

  672. and whispers to him

  673. you're a total failure Paul

  674. and Paul says

  675. who is he that condemns?

  676. Christ Jesus

  677. is the one who died

  678. more than that

  679. who was raised

  680. and who was at the right hand

  681. of God

  682. and who was interceding

  683. for us

  684. Who is he that condemns?

  685. I've got a saviour

  686. who died for me

  687. who took the punishment

  688. for me

  689. who is raised

  690. from the dead

  691. and is alive

  692. forevermore

  693. and he speaks

  694. my name to the Father

  695. Now at this very moment

  696. in heaven

  697. who is there

  698. to condemn me?

  699. The devil comes back

  700. he says

  701. God doesn't really love you

  702. How can God

  703. possibly love you

  704. you worthless

  705. little creature?

  706. And Paul says

  707. there is nothing

  708. that can separate me

  709. from the love

  710. of God in Christ

  711. What can separate me

  712. from God's love?

  713. Nothing at all

  714. and he ransacks

  715. the universe

  716. to try and find

  717. things that could

  718. possibly separate him

  719. from the love of God

  720. and there is absolutely

  721. nothing at all

  722. that I can think of

  723. nothing in all

  724. the universe

  725. that can separate

  726. the believer

  727. from the loving

  728. of God in Christ

  729. Do you see this book?

  730. That's all I'm trying

  731. to get you to see tonight

  732. I'm not trying to

  733. expire

  734. this book

  735. in Romans 8

  736. but do you see

  737. what Paul is doing?

  738. Paul is putting on

  739. the belt of truth

  740. isn't he?

  741. And when the devil

  742. is attacking him

  743. when the devil

  744. is trying to undermine

  745. his confidence

  746. in the Lord

  747. and spoil his

  748. enjoyment of the Lord

  749. what does Paul do

  750. he puts on

  751. the belt of truth?

  752. And he keeps asking

  753. himself

  754. what is true?

  755. Is it true

  756. what the devil

  757. is saying to me?

  758. No it's not

  759. Christ has died

  760. Christ has risen

  761. from the dead

  762. Christ intercedes

  763. for me

  764. nothing can separate

  765. me from the love

  766. of God

  767. which is in Christ

  768. and that's why

  769. he said the devil

  770. couldn't get anywhere

  771. with Jesus

  772. from a Matthew 4

  773. he comes and he

  774. tries to deflect

  775. the Lord

  776. from his purpose

  777. that's why the devil

  778. couldn't get anywhere

  779. with him

  780. not because Jesus

  781. didn't quote the

  782. Bible

  783. there's nothing

  784. powerful about

  785. being able to

  786. quote scripture

  787. there's nothing

  788. magical about

  789. verses from the

  790. Bible

  791. that wasn't the

  792. point

  793. all the point

  794. was

  795. here was a man

  796. whose life was

  797. girded by the

  798. truth

  799. he put on the

  800. armour of God

  801. and the devil

  802. couldn't penetrate

  803. that

  804. couldn't get

  805. through it

  806. and no matter

  807. at what direction

  808. the devil came

  809. at Jesus

  810. whether it's

  811. at the temptation

  812. whether it's

  813. through Peter

  814. whether it's

  815. in the garden

  816. of Gethsemane

  817. he found a man

  818. whose life was

  819. girded

  820. by the truth

  821. of God's word

  822. it is written

  823. it is written

  824. it is written

  825. it is written

  826. Satan you tell

  827. me this

  828. but this is

  829. reality

  830. and this is

  831. where I'll stand

  832. my life is

  833. fastened together

  834. by his word

  835. reality is the

  836. way that God

  837. sees things

  838. and if you and

  839. I have to face

  840. the enemy

  841. the first thing

  842. we have to do

  843. is to put on

  844. the belt of

  845. truth

  846. and not just

  847. gospel truth

  848. but all kinds

  849. of truth

  850. in every situation

  851. we have to ask

  852. ourselves

  853. what is the

  854. truth here

  855. because God

  856. is the God

  857. of truth

  858. and the devil

  859. is a liar

  860. from the beginning

  861. that's the first

  862. thing

  863. we have to have

  864. the word of God

  865. dwelling in it

  866. where to hide

  867. his word

  868. within our hearts

  869. so that we will

  870. not sin against

  871. him

  872. if we're to be

  873. ready to fight

  874. your life

  875. and my life

  876. is to be held

  877. together by truth

  878. and not by

  879. feelings

  880. and not by

  881. consensus

  882. and secondly

  883. we must know

  884. the truth

  885. but we must

  886. show the truth

  887. that brings in

  888. the second idea

  889. doesn't it

  890. that of sincerity

  891. not only must

  892. you know the

  893. truth

  894. but you must

  895. show the truth

  896. David in

  897. Psalm 51

    Psalms 51:6

  898. verse 6

  899. that great

  900. prayer of

  901. confession

  902. he speaks about

  903. having truth

  904. in inward

  905. parts

  906. it's a great

  907. line

  908. it's particularly

  909. powerful when you

  910. know the background

  911. to that song

  912. because

  913. David had become

  914. a casualty

  915. hadn't he

  916. in the war

  917. he'd fallen

  918. to the enemy

  919. in the evil

  920. day

  921. Jonathan

  922. and the

  923. Puritan

  924. who died

  925. in Ealing

  926. he describes

  927. the evil

  928. day

  929. as that

  930. day

  931. when opportunity

  932. and desire

  933. and temptation

  934. coincide

  935. it's very

  936. helpful

  937. the evil

  938. day

  939. is when

  940. opportunity

  941. and desire

  942. and temptation

  943. coincide

  944. in warfare

  945. some days are

  946. worse than

  947. other days

  948. aren't they

  949. and there are

  950. days that the

  951. apostle speaks of

  952. here in Ephesians 6

  953. as the evil

  954. day

  955. and he wants you

  956. to be able to

  957. stand in the evil

  958. day

  959. in those days

  960. when the devil

  961. is really attacking

  962. you

  963. when opportunity

  964. and desire

  965. and temptation

  966. coincide

  967. in your life

  968. there was a day

  969. like that

  970. for David

  971. he's on a

  972. rooftop

  973. it was an evil

  974. day

  975. and instead of

  976. standing

  977. David fell

  978. and he became

  979. a casualty

  980. he fell

  981. morally

  982. and for a

  983. year and a

  984. half

  985. or around that

  986. time

  987. he lived a

  988. lie

  989. he lost

  990. his inner

  991. integrity

  992. before God

  993. and before the

  994. people

  995. no one took

  996. him seriously

  997. he lost his

  998. authority

  999. his more

  1000. integrity

  1001. as a leader

  1002. of the people

  1003. and so Nathan

  1004. the prophet

  1005. God's messenger

  1006. comes to him

  1007. Nathan tells a

  1008. story

  1009. if you know your

  1010. Bible you'll know it

  1011. he tells a story

  1012. rich man

  1013. who had a

  1014. neighbour

  1015. who was very

  1016. poor

  1017. who had a

  1018. little lamb

  1019. that's all he

  1020. owned

  1021. it was a

  1022. lovely little

  1023. lamb

  1024. and the rich

  1025. one took it

  1026. he stole the

  1027. poor man's

  1028. lamb

  1029. the story

  1030. about David

  1031. that David

  1032. couldn't recognise

  1033. it

  1034. so much that

  1035. he'd fallen

  1036. prey to Satan's

  1037. attack

  1038. that he'd lost

  1039. any sense of

  1040. reality

  1041. any in a

  1042. reality

  1043. so God

  1044. comes then

  1045. through his

  1046. spokesman

  1047. Nathan

  1048. the prophet

  1049. and God

  1050. who Nathan

  1051. paints a

  1052. picture

  1053. that describes

  1054. into the

  1055. smallest detail

  1056. it's a

  1057. brilliant

  1058. brilliant

  1059. sermon

  1060. but David

  1061. doesn't see

  1062. himself

  1063. and David

  1064. doesn't recognise

  1065. himself

  1066. and it can be

  1067. that like that

  1068. under the

  1069. preaching of the

  1070. Bible

  1071. can't it

  1072. but when the

  1073. preacher is

  1074. preaching we

  1075. don't see

  1076. ourselves

  1077. that we look

  1078. over our

  1079. shoulders at

  1080. someone else

  1081. and we say

  1082. well that is a

  1083. good word for

  1084. so and so

  1085. isn't it

  1086. I wish he

  1087. could have been

  1088. here to hear

  1089. that or I

  1090. wish he was

  1091. here

  1092. and we

  1093. lose our

  1094. inner integrity

  1095. and inner

  1096. reality

  1097. and David

  1098. had lost

  1099. in his

  1100. life

  1101. that

  1102. and so

  1103. he prays

  1104. and he is

  1105. finally

  1106. restored

  1107. so that God

  1108. would make him

  1109. to know the

  1110. truth in

  1111. inward parts

  1112. and I think

  1113. we don't

  1114. understand the

  1115. belt of truth

  1116. in that way

  1117. too

  1118. and don't

  1119. excuse what

  1120. I've said

  1121. already

  1122. I don't

  1123. see why

  1124. we have

  1125. to pit

  1126. the truth

  1127. of the

  1128. gospel

  1129. with the

  1130. truth

  1131. being wider

  1132. I don't

  1133. think we

  1134. have to

  1135. do that

  1136. there's no

  1137. reason to

  1138. pit them

  1139. against each

  1140. other

  1141. the two

  1142. fit together

  1143. perfectly

  1144. in the fight

  1145. against the

  1146. enemy we

  1147. must know

  1148. the truth

  1149. but we

  1150. must also

  1151. show the

  1152. truth

  1153. if we're

  1154. going to

  1155. stand

  1156. and we

  1157. need to

  1158. not only

  1159. know the

  1160. truth of

  1161. doctrine

  1162. but the

  1163. truth of

  1164. life as

  1165. well

  1166. integrity

  1167. there ought

  1168. to be

  1169. an inner

  1170. reality

  1171. about us

  1172. and the

  1173. emphasis

  1174. comes out

  1175. again and

  1176. again in

  1177. the New

  1178. Testament

  1179. the

  1180. Apostle

  1181. Paul when

  1182. he describes

  1183. the armour

  1184. in Romans

  1185. 13 he

  1186. calls it

  1187. the armour

  1188. of light

  1189. and the

  1190. armour we

  1191. are to

  1192. wear is

  1193. to be

  1194. clothed

  1195. with light

  1196. to be

  1197. transparent

  1198. we're not

  1199. to play

  1200. the devil

  1201. at his

  1202. own

  1203. game

  1204. 1 Corinthians

  1205. 4 tells

  1206. us 2

  1207. Corinthians

  1208. 4 not

  1209. to be

  1210. devious

  1211. we're to

  1212. be open

  1213. the

  1214. Apostle

  1215. Paul can

  1216. commends

  1217. Timothy

  1218. doesn't he

  1219. find sincere

  1220. and unfeigned

  1221. faith

  1222. James tells

  1223. us that

  1224. a double

  1225. minded

  1226. man

  1227. is unstable

  1228. in all

  1229. he does

  1230. and he

  1231. will not

  1232. stand on

  1233. the evil

  1234. day

  1235. he's

  1236. unstable

  1237. and if

  1238. you and

  1239. I are

  1240. insincere

  1241. in our

  1242. profession

  1243. if we

  1244. are living

  1245. some kind

  1246. of double

  1247. life

  1248. we're not

  1249. going to

  1250. be able to

  1251. stand on

  1252. the evil

  1253. day

  1254. and to

  1255. buckle on

  1256. the

  1257. balance of

  1258. truth

  1259. is to

  1260. be honest

  1261. with

  1262. ourselves

  1263. and to

  1264. be honest

  1265. before

  1266. God

  1267. and before

  1268. one another

  1269. maybe

  1270. it's time

  1271. to do

  1272. that

  1273. sort

  1274. and that

  1275. goes much

  1276. deeper

  1277. I think

  1278. than many

  1279. of us

  1280. are conscious

  1281. of

  1282. let me

  1283. illustrate

  1284. it

  1285. often

  1286. we imagine

  1287. don't we

  1288. that we

  1289. are doing

  1290. something

  1291. out of a

  1292. true

  1293. spiritual

  1294. motivation

  1295. but when

  1296. we really

  1297. stop

  1298. or somebody

  1299. points out

  1300. it to us

  1301. or

  1302. we think

  1303. about it

  1304. we're not

  1305. doing it

  1306. for spiritual

  1307. reasons at

  1308. all

  1309. but what

  1310. lies behind

  1311. so much

  1312. of what

  1313. we do

  1314. isn't

  1315. driven by

  1316. a desire

  1317. to glorify

  1318. God

  1319. but some

  1320. kind of

  1321. inner

  1322. psychological

  1323. desire

  1324. that we

  1325. have

  1326. we've all

  1327. got these

  1328. things

  1329. we want

  1330. to be

  1331. recognised

  1332. we want

  1333. to feel

  1334. that our

  1335. life adds

  1336. up to

  1337. something

  1338. there are

  1339. people that

  1340. go into

  1341. Christian

  1342. ministry

  1343. like that

  1344. there are

  1345. people that

  1346. go onto

  1347. the mission

  1348. field

  1349. like that

  1350. they don't

  1351. see it

  1352. and no one

  1353. has the guts

  1354. to point it

  1355. out to them

  1356. and the devil

  1357. gets in

  1358. and the devil

  1359. gets in

  1360. because we're

  1361. not being

  1362. sincere

  1363. and we're

  1364. not being

  1365. honest

  1366. with ourselves

  1367. or with one

  1368. another

  1369. to buckle

  1370. on the

  1371. belt of truth

  1372. is to be

  1373. open and

  1374. transparent and

  1375. honest and

  1376. to be real

  1377. before God

  1378. we'll be with

  1379. others and

  1380. with ourselves

  1381. and if we're

  1382. ever going to

  1383. stand on

  1384. the evil

  1385. day

  1386. this is how

  1387. it must be

  1388. we must

  1389. seek that

  1390. in the

  1391. whole of

  1392. our life

  1393. so I

  1394. take on this

  1395. word truth

  1396. in the

  1397. widest

  1398. possible

  1399. sense

  1400. not just

  1401. in the

  1402. truth

  1403. of God's

  1404. word

  1405. or in

  1406. terms of

  1407. gospel

  1408. truth

  1409. but in

  1410. terms of

  1411. truth

  1412. in its

  1413. widest

  1414. sense

  1415. God

  1416. is the

  1417. God

  1418. of

  1419. truth

  1420. as

  1421. Christians

  1422. we believe

  1423. don't we

  1424. in the

  1425. sanctity

  1426. of truth

  1427. it

  1428. matters

  1429. because

  1430. God

  1431. is

  1432. true

  1433. and the

  1434. devil

  1435. is a

  1436. liar

  1437. so

  1438. let me

  1439. just

  1440. bring this

  1441. all

  1442. together

  1443. to buckle

  1444. on the

  1445. belt

  1446. of

  1447. truth

  1448. what is

  1449. it

  1450. what does

  1451. it mean

  1452. to buckle

  1453. on the

  1454. belt

  1455. of

  1456. truth

  1457. is a

  1458. willingness

  1459. to apply

  1460. the

  1461. whole

  1462. of

  1463. God's

  1464. word

  1465. to the

  1466. whole

  1467. of

  1468. our

  1469. lives

  1470. that's

  1471. what it

  1472. means

  1473. to put

  1474. on

  1475. the

  1476. belt

  1477. of

  1478. truth

  1479. and

  1480. that

  1481. takes

  1482. on

  1483. not

  1484. only

  1485. the

  1486. truth

  1487. but

  1488. sincerity

  1489. as

  1490. well

  1491. to

  1492. buckle

  1493. on

  1494. the

  1495. belt

  1496. of

  1497. truth

  1498. is

  1499. a

  1500. willingness

  1501. to

  1502. apply

  1503. the

  1504. whole

  1505. of

  1506. God's

  1507. word

  1508. to

  1509. the

  1510. whole

  1511. of

  1512. our

  1513. lives

  1514. so

  1515. do you

  1516. remember

  1517. this

  1518. church

  1519. in

  1520. Ephesus

  1521. was

  1522. a

  1523. priest

  1524. there

  1525. for

  1526. three

  1527. years

  1528. and

  1529. when

  1530. he

  1531. came to

  1532. leave

  1533. of

  1534. that

  1535. church

  1536. he

  1537. spoke

  1538. to

  1539. the

  1540. elders

  1541. in

  1542. Acts

  1543. 20

  1544. and

  1545. this

  1546. is

  1547. what

  1548. he

  1549. said

  1550. he

  1551. said

  1552. pay

  1553. careful

  1554. attention

  1555. to

  1556. yourselves

  1557. you

  1558. leaders

  1559. and to

  1560. all

  1561. the

  1562. flock

  1563. in

  1564. which

  1565. the

  1566. Holy

  1567. Spirit

  1568. has

  1569. made

  1570. you

  1571. overseers

  1572. to

  1573. care

  1574. for

  1575. the

  1576. church

  1577. you

  1578. fierce

  1579. wolves

  1580. will

  1581. come

  1582. in

  1583. among

  1584. you

  1585. not

  1586. sparing

  1587. the

  1588. flock

  1589. and

  1590. from

  1591. among

  1592. your

  1593. own

  1594. selves

  1595. will

  1596. arise

  1597. men

  1598. speaking

  1599. twisted

  1600. things

  1601. to

  1602. draw

  1603. away

  1604. the

  1605. disciples

  1606. after

  1607. them

  1608. he's

  1609. warning

  1610. the

  1611. elders

  1612. isn't

  1613. he

  1614. what

  1615. are you

  1616. saying

  1617. the

  1618. church

  1619. leaders

  1620. you

  1621. are

  1622. in

  1623. a

  1624. battle

  1625. he

  1626. says

  1627. I

  1628. preached

  1629. the

  1630. word

  1631. of

  1632. God

  1633. to

  1634. you

  1635. for

  1636. three

  1637. years

  1638. I'm

  1639. leaving

  1640. now

  1641. and

  1642. I'm

  1643. warning

  1644. you

  1645. after

  1646. I

  1647. go

  1648. and

  1649. in

  1650. every

  1651. church

  1652. people

  1653. will

  1654. come

  1655. in

  1656. and

  1657. they

  1658. will

  1659. try

  1660. and

  1661. spoil

  1662. the

  1663. work

  1664. and

  1665. actually

  1666. many

  1667. of

  1668. those

  1669. people

  1670. will

  1671. rise up

  1672. from

  1673. amongst

  1674. you

  1675. from

  1676. your

  1677. own

  1678. numbers

  1679. and

  1680. people

  1681. will

  1682. speak

  1683. all

  1684. sorts

  1685. of

  1686. things

  1687. that

  1688. spoil

  1689. the

  1690. work

  1691. and

  1692. the

  1693. devil

  1694. is

  1695. going

  1696. to

  1697. get

  1698. into

  1699. the

  1700. situation

  1701. and

  1702. there

  1703. he

  1704. says

  1705. to

  1706. them

  1707. therefore

  1708. watch

  1709. be

  1710. alert

  1711. remembering

  1712. that

  1713. for

  1714. three

  1715. years

  1716. I

  1717. did

  1718. not

  1719. night

  1720. or day

  1721. to

  1722. admonish

  1723. everyone

  1724. with

  1725. tears

  1726. you

  1727. see

  1728. the

  1729. devil

  1730. wants

  1731. to

  1732. get

  1733. into

  1734. every

  1735. church

  1736. and

  1737. the

  1738. only

  1739. way

  1740. to

  1741. prevent

  1742. him

  1743. is

  1744. to

  1745. put

  1746. on

  1747. the

  1748. belt

  1749. of

  1750. truth

  1751. he

  1752. says

  1753. remember

  1754. what I

  1755. have

  1756. been

  1757. saying

  1758. to

  1759. you

  1760. for

  1761. these

  1762. past

  1763. three

  1764. years

  1765. I

  1766. did

  1767. not

  1768. shrink

  1769. from

  1770. declaring

  1771. to

  1772. you

  1773. the

  1774. whole

  1775. counsel

  1776. of

  1777. God

  1778. the

  1779. only

  1780. way

  1781. that

  1782. we

  1783. will

  1784. withstand

  1785. the

  1786. enemy

  1787. is

  1788. by

  1789. putting

  1790. on

  1791. the

  1792. whole

  1793. counsel

  1794. of

  1795. God

  1796. to

  1797. put

  1798. on

  1799. the

  1800. whole

  1801. truth

  1802. and

  1803. nothing

  1804. but

  1805. the

  1806. truth

  1807. you

  1808. are

  1809. to

  1810. hide

  1811. into

  1812. nothing

  1813. unless

  1814. you

  1815. do

  1816. that

  1817. you

  1818. can't

  1819. stand

  1820. and

  1821. when

  1822. the

  1823. devil

  1824. comes

  1825. you

  1826. won't

  1827. be able

  1828. to

  1829. stand

  1830. against

  1831. him

  1832. unless

  1833. you

  1834. put

  1835. on

  1836. the

  1837. whole

  1838. counsel

  1839. of

  1840. God

  1841. the

  1842. whole

  1843. word

  1844. of

  1845. God

  1846. is

  1847. to

  1848. be

  1849. applied

  1850. !

  1851. to

  1852. the

  1853. whole

  1854. of

  1855. your

  1856. life

  1857. I

  1858. am

  1859. where

  1860. wish

  1861. they

  1862. said

  1863. it

  1864. differently

  1865. we

  1866. were

  1867. unwise

  1868. in

  1869. some

  1870. of

  1871. the

  1872. things

  1873. that

  1874. they

  1875. said

  1876. most

  1877. of

  1878. all

  1879. they

  1880. were

  1881. just

  1882. a

  1883. little

  1884. bit

  1885. embarrassed

  1886. they

  1887. quoted

  1888. the

  1889. Bible

  1890. in

  1891. public

  1892. and

  1893. the

  1894. responses

  1895. of

  1896. Christians

  1897. have

  1898. been

  1899. remarkably

  1900. useless

  1901. because

  1902. they

  1903. haven't

  1904. put

  1905. on

  1906. the

  1907. belt

  1908. of

  1909. truth

  1910. and

  1911. you

  1912. and

  1913. I

  1914. if

  1915. we

  1916. think

  1917. as

  1918. a

  1919. church

  1920. that

  1921. we

  1922. !

  1923. be

  1924. !

  1925. able

  1926. to

  1927. stand

  1928. in

  1929. the

  1930. next

  1931. 5,

  1932. 10,

  1933. 15

  1934. years

  1935. in

  1936. this

  1937. culture

  1938. by

  1939. downplaying

  1940. the truth

  1941. of

  1942. God's

  1943. word

  1944. we've

  1945. got no

  1946. chance

  1947. let me

  1948. just point

  1949. out

  1950. finally

  1951. let me

  1952. point out

  1953. the context

  1954. it's one of

  1955. the most

  1956. important

  1957. things that

  1958. people forget

  1959. about

  1960. Ephesians

  1961. 6

  1962. on this

  1963. battle

  1964. where is

  1965. the battle

  1966. we fought

  1967. in

  1968. Ephesians

  1969. 6

  1970. remember

  1971. we saw

  1972. it

  1973. last week

  1974. it's

  1975. so helpful

  1976. where's

  1977. the battle

  1978. to be

  1979. fought

  1980. it's

  1981. in

  1982. the

  1983. home

  1984. and

  1985. it's

  1986. in

  1987. work

  1988. and

  1989. it's

  1990. in

  1991. relationships

  1992. between

  1993. husbands

  1994. and

  1995. wives

  1996. and

  1997. parents

  1998. and

  1999. children

  2000. let me

  2001. tell you

  2002. about a

  2003. man

  2004. he's a

  2005. great

  2006. champion

  2007. for the

  2008. truth

  2009. in

  2010. church

  2011. but

  2012. actually

  2013. his

  2014. love

  2015. for his

  2016. wife

  2017. needs

  2018. much

  2019. to be

  2020. desired

  2021. Spurgeon

  2022. said

  2023. he's

  2024. an

  2025. angel

  2026. in

  2027. public

  2028. but

  2029. a

  2030. devil

  2031. in

  2032. private

  2033. here's

  2034. a

  2035. woman

  2036. and

  2037. she's

  2038. really

  2039. active

  2040. in

  2041. church

  2042. life

  2043. she's

  2044. involved

  2045. in

  2046. so

  2047. much

  2048. but

  2049. she

  2050. will

  2051. not

  2052. and

  2053. does

  2054. not

  2055. submit

  2056. to her

  2057. husband

  2058. in a

  2059. biblical

  2060. way

  2061. she

  2062. doesn't

  2063. respect

  2064. him

  2065. in the

  2066. way

  2067. the

  2068. Bible

  2069. demands

  2070. here's

  2071. a

  2072. young

  2073. person

  2074. or

  2075. child

  2076. even

  2077. in

  2078. church

  2079. people

  2080. think

  2081. you're

  2082. a

  2083. little

  2084. angel

  2085. maybe

  2086. you

  2087. pray

  2088. for

  2089. your

  2090. friends

  2091. to

  2092. become

  2093. Christians

  2094. but

  2095. at

  2096. home

  2097. you

  2098. don't

  2099. obey

  2100. dad

  2101. and

  2102. mom

  2103. you

  2104. adamantly

  2105. refuse

  2106. here's

  2107. a man

  2108. who's

  2109. really

  2110. a

  2111. Christian

  2112. at

  2113. work

  2114. speaks

  2115. about

  2116. the

  2117. Lord

  2118. Jesus

  2119. but
