  1. Now open up your Bible to Ephesians 6.

  2. So we're coming back to our series on the armor of God.

  3. ! I hope to finish it before I go on holiday.

  4. If you missed the first two sermons,

  5. it might be worth just having a listen to those sermons.

  6. Send the church office an email and they can send you the call-ins.

  7. There's a really interesting incident in Acts 19,

  8. if you know that chapter, where Paul is referred to as a man who's known in hell.

  9. There's an evil spirit that has conquered the Jewish exorcist.

  10. And he refers to the fact of this evil spirit.

  11. He says, I don't know who you are.

  12. Who are you anyway?

  13. He says, I know who Jesus is and I know who Paul is,

  14. but I don't know who you are.

  15. There's a little bit of humor in that incident, really.

  16. And somebody commenting on that incident has described the Apostle Paul as a man known in hell.

  17. A man known in hell.

  18. A marked man, in other words.

  19. And that should be every single one of us who is a Christian this evening.

  20. Who is in Christ.

  21. If we've been saved, if we have been rescued from Satan's clenches,

  22. if we've been translated out of the kingdom of darkness into the kingdom of light,

  23. then we're marked men and women, boys and girls.

  24. As long as we're unbelieving, as long as we're outside of Christ,

  25. as long as we're in Satan's kingdom,

  26. well, he doesn't bother about us too much.

  27. Do you remember the illustration that Jesus talks about?

  28. He says the good, the armed man, the strong man,

  29. he keeps his goods in peace.

  30. The devil is not bothered by us as long as we're not believing in Christ.

  31. As long as we're in his kingdom.

  32. But the moment we're rescued, the moment that we are saved from his power,

  33. we become important to him.

  34. We become marked men on his witness.

  35. To be a wanted man or a wanted woman,

  36. to be on a death list, it's a horrible thing, isn't it?

  37. We know, don't we, people who are on a wanted list,

  38. or they're on a death list,

  39. they have to take the appropriate security arrangements.

  40. And we are on a Satan's list list.

  41. And so we are to be on our guard.

  42. And we are to make full provision

  43. of all the security arrangements that God has made.

  44. Think of a policeman in Northern Ireland,

  45. during the troubles.

  46. I remember being in Northern Ireland,

  47. my sister went to university in Belfast,

  48. and we stayed at a policeman's house,

  49. and every day he would go out,

  50. and before he got into his car,

  51. he'd have to check in his car,

  52. under his car,

  53. to see whether there was some device under it.

  54. He'd have to go over different things with a device,

  55. because he was on a wanted list,

  56. because he was on a hit list.

  57. He had to take care

  58. to follow all the security arrangements.

  59. And so do we.

  60. And so that's what we're looking at, aren't we,

  61. in this series.

  62. Can you see that again?

  63. A little verse 11.

  64. Put on the whole armour of God,

  65. that we may be able to stand.

  66. Verse 13.

  67. Therefore take up the whole armour of God,

  68. again, same thing,

  69. that you may be able to withstand in the evil day,

  70. and having done all to stand firm,

  71. stand therefore,

  72. having fastened on the belt of truth

  73. that we looked at last time,

  74. and having put on the breastplate of righteousness.

  75. And so this is the kind of second piece of equipment

  76. that God has provided for us,

  77. for our protection,

  78. the breastplate of righteousness.

  79. As an introduction,

  80. I really want to stress to you the importance

  81. of this piece of equipment.

  82. It's really the centrepiece of Christian armour.

  83. We know, don't we,

  84. of bulletproof vests.

  85. Our police, in the mess,

  86. they sometimes wear staff vests.

  87. That is the modern equivalent of a breastplate.

  88. And that bulletproof vest will provide protection,

  89. and for what we call the vital organs of the body.

  90. And so,

  91. a soldier,

  92. at least when they might get hit in the leg,

  93. or the arm,

  94. and they'll survive.

  95. But if they get hit in the region

  96. covered by the bulletproof vest,

  97. or the breastplate,

  98. well, they're unlikely to survive.

  99. The breastplate covers, doesn't it?

  100. The vital region,

  101. the vital organs of the body.

  102. And that's why it's so important.

  103. That we are covered by the breastplate of righteousness.

  104. Let me put it to you,

  105. like this,

  106. all the references I'm going to use,

  107. there's quite a few of them,

  108. are on the sheets that you were given when you came in.

  109. Proverbs 4.23,

  110. Keep your heart with all vigilance,

  111. for from it flows the springs of life.

  112. And the NIV, I think more helpfully puts it,

  113. it says,

  114. Guard your heart above all else.

  115. Whatever else you do,

  116. or whatever other armour you've got on,

  117. whatever other protection you avail yourself of,

  118. guard your heart above all else,

  119. because it's the well-spring of life.

  120. Because out of your heart are the issues of life.

  121. And when the Bible speaks about the heart,

  122. it's not speaking about a physical organ

  123. that pumps blood around our bodies.

  124. When the Bible speaks of the heart of men and women,

  125. it's talking about the centre of our personality.

  126. The heart is,

  127. according to the Bible,

  128. it's the seat of our affections,

  129. it's the real you,

  130. it's the centre of your thought processes,

  131. it's the home of your conscience,

  132. it's the spring of all our motives,

  133. it's the source of all our desires,

  134. it's the fountain of all activities,

  135. it's the focus of our personal lives.

  136. It's us.

  137. And the Bible says you have to guard your heart.

  138. And it's vital that you guard your heart,

  139. because out of the heart are the issues of life.

  140. And that is the target that the devil aims at most of all.

  141. That's where the battle will be fought and won.

  142. It's not out there somewhere,

  143. but in our hearts.

  144. It's in the realm, isn't it,

  145. of our affections,

  146. what we want,

  147. and love,

  148. of our thoughts,

  149. it's in the realms of our conscience,

  150. it's in the realm of our motives and our desires.

  151. That's where the battle is fought with Satan.

  152. And that is where we most need God's protection.

  153. Let's look at it a little bit more closely,

  154. you'll see that it's described for us there,

  155. isn't it,

  156. as the breastplate of righteousness.

  157. Put on the breastplate of righteousness.

  158. God's protection for our hearts

  159. in the battle against the devil

  160. is righteousness.

  161. What do we mean by that?

  162. Well, first thing is this.

  163. It can't mean our own righteousness.

  164. It can't mean our own righteous acts,

  165. our own right standing before God.

  166. When it talks about

  167. the breastplate of righteousness,

  168. it cannot possibly mean

  169. that we put on our own righteousness,

  170. because for the very simple reason,

  171. we don't have any righteousness.

  172. We don't have any righteousness

  173. inherently in God's sight.

  174. Do you remember how Romans tells you

  175. there is none righteous,

  176. no,

  177. not one,

  178. not in God's sight.

  179. I don't mean by this

  180. that we're as bad as

  181. we could be,

  182. that's obviously not true.

  183. There are good things

  184. in human nature.

  185. And every single one of us

  186. has got our good points,

  187. but it's all comparative,

  188. isn't it?

  189. And when we bring our goodness

  190. into the light of God's holiness,

  191. it looks very tarnished indeed

  192. and quite shabby.

  193. And the Bible tells us actually,

  194. doesn't it,

  195. alarmingly,

  196. that our goodness

  197. is not goodness at all

  198. in God's sight.

  199. That actually,

  200. as we see our goodness

  201. in God's sight,

  202. we know that it's full of

  203. false motives

  204. and pride

  205. and vanity

  206. and things which

  207. other people might say,

  208. well,

  209. that's really good

  210. that you've done that

  211. on the outside.

  212. We know that on

  213. the inside,

  214. if we hunt,

  215. there's selfishness

  216. and pride.

  217. And we don't do things

  218. to please God

  219. and that's the only motive

  220. for goodness.

  221. There is none really good

  222. in this world

  223. by nature.

  224. There is none righteous.

  225. No, not one,

  226. says the Apostle.

  227. Isaiah says that

  228. our righteous acts,

  229. they're like filthy rags.

  230. And so if we try

  231. to stand before Satan

  232. in our own righteousness,

  233. it's like standing

  234. before him in a

  235. in a string vest

  236. full of holes.

  237. And to think that

  238. you can stand

  239. against the devil

  240. trusting in your own

  241. inherent goodness

  242. is utter madness.

  243. There's no protection

  244. in your goodness.

  245. And that's crucially important

  246. because if you haven't

  247. seen this,

  248. if you've not seen that,

  249. then you're not

  250. really even in the battle.

  251. if you haven't

  252. come to understand

  253. that your own

  254. righteousness

  255. is useless

  256. when it comes

  257. to your acceptance

  258. of God

  259. with God

  260. that you dare

  261. not rely it.

  262. If you haven't been

  263. brought to that point

  264. to understand that,

  265. well,

  266. the really alarming

  267. truth is tonight

  268. you're not in

  269. God's kingdom.

  270. And you're really

  271. still in Satan's kingdom.

  272. Paul says

  273. you've been blinded

  274. by him

  275. under his control.

  276. Doesn't mean

  277. you're as bad

  278. as you could be

  279. but it does mean

  280. that you're not

  281. in the battle at all

  282. and that's

  283. crucially important.

  284. Listen to how

  285. the Apostle Paul

  286. puts it,

  287. he gives his testimony

  288. in Philippians 3

  289. it's on the sheet

  290. and he says

  291. in verse 9

  292. he says

  293. there was a time

  294. when I really

  295. thought that

  296. I was pretty secure

  297. in my own

  298. righteousness.

  299. And he describes

  300. his own

  301. righteousness

  302. earlier on in the chapter.

  303. He talks about

  304. having confidence

  305. in the flesh

  306. doesn't he

  307. right at the start

  308. of verse 4.

  309. And he says

  310. if anyone thinks

  311. that they can have

  312. confidence

  313. before God

  314. in the flesh

  315. well I can outdo them

  316. and he goes on

  317. to list the various

  318. things that he

  319. once trusted in

  320. you'll see them there

  321. and he relied upon

  322. them to put him

  323. right with God.

  324. And so verse 5

  325. he says

  326. I was circumcised

  327. on the eighth day

  328. I was of the people

  329. of Israel

  330. of the tribe of Benjamin

  331. a Hebrew of Hebrews

  332. as to the law

  333. of Pharisee

  334. as the zeal

  335. well I praise

  336. the people of the church

  337. as to righteousness

  338. under the law

  339. blameless.

  340. And then he says

  341. verse 9

  342. not having a righteousness

  343. of my own

  344. that comes from the law

  345. but that which comes

  346. through faith in Christ

  347. the righteousness

  348. from God

  349. that depends on faith.

  350. So he describes

  351. his goodness

  352. his background

  353. his upbringing

  354. his religious

  355. duties

  356. his decency

  357. his honesty

  358. his morality

  359. and having described

  360. all that

  361. he comes to say

  362. all that is useless.

  363. All that is useless.

  364. He says

  365. these things

  366. I thought they were

  367. gained to me

  368. verse 7

  369. but actually

  370. they are not.

  371. I was counted

  372. on these things

  373. to get me to heaven

  374. I thought

  375. these were the things

  376. that would bring me

  377. right with God

  378. but now I see

  379. that these things

  380. they'll never do that

  381. for me.

  382. So verse 7

  383. but whatever gain

  384. I had

  385. I counted as loss

  386. for the sake of Christ

  387. indeed I count

  388. everything as loss

  389. because of the

  390. surpassing worth

  391. of knowing Christ

  392. Jesus my Lord.

  393. For his sake

  394. I covered the loss

  395. of all things

  396. and covered them

  397. as rubbish

  398. in order that I

  399. may gain Christ

  400. and be found in him

  401. not having a righteousness

  402. of my own

  403. that comes from the law.

  404. not having a

  405. doing yourself religion.

  406. No he says

  407. I know that there's

  408. nothing I can do

  409. to stand me

  410. in good stead at all.

  411. That's all I want.

  412. What I want

  413. he says

  414. is a righteousness

  415. which is of God

  416. which comes through faith.

  417. And that is the righteousness

  418. that I need

  419. and that is the righteousness

  420. that you and I need

  421. if we're going to stand

  422. before the enemy.

  423. It's a bulletproof righteousness.

  424. Your own righteousness

  425. is not bulletproof

  426. it's full of holes.

  427. But the righteousness

  428. he describes here

  429. the righteousness of God

  430. which is in Jesus Christ

  431. and it comes to us

  432. by faith

  433. in Christ

  434. is well

  435. invulnerable

  436. to Satan's accusation.

  437. It's bulletproof

  438. on the evil day.

  439. And as soon as you

  440. be brought to this point

  441. your heart

  442. well it's just wide open

  443. to the devil.

  444. You're still in

  445. enemy territory.

  446. And if you're trusting

  447. in your own righteousness

  448. you're in very dangerous territory.

  449. So this righteousness

  450. that the apostle Paul

  451. is talking about

  452. in the Ephesians 6

  453. it's not our own righteousness.

  454. So what is it?

  455. If this righteousness

  456. is God's provision

  457. for our protection

  458. against Satan

  459. if it's not

  460. our own righteousness

  461. what is it?

  462. Where does it come from?

  463. What Paul tells us

  464. doesn't he?

  465. It is the righteousness

  466. of God

  467. and how does it come?

  468. By faith in Jesus Christ.

  469. There are two things

  470. that I'm going to say

  471. tonight about this righteousness

  472. and I'm going to use

  473. technical terms.

  474. I don't apologise for that.

  475. I think we need to

  476. stop apologising

  477. for theological

  478. technical terms.

  479. We need to explain them.

  480. The message of the gospel

  481. has technical terms.

  482. It's not our business

  483. to dumb them down.

  484. Have you bought a laptop?

  485. Have you bought a laptop?

  486. When you're going to buy a laptop

  487. do you understand

  488. what the specifications are?

  489. I haven't got the

  490. farthest clue, isn't it?

  491. You haven't got a clue

  492. what they are

  493. and neither are you.

  494. But if you're going to

  495. buy a laptop

  496. and it's a decent laptop

  497. and you're more

  498. diligent than I am

  499. you will go and

  500. you'll research those terms

  501. because those terms

  502. matter.

  503. You take the trouble

  504. to find out

  505. what the spec is.

  506. But we're dealing

  507. with something tonight

  508. that's far more important

  509. than you buying a laptop

  510. or a phone

  511. or whatever it is.

  512. We're dealing with

  513. your eternal destiny.

  514. Your never dying soul.

  515. Your safety.

  516. And so what we're dealing

  517. with tonight

  518. is more to you personally.

  519. It's very, very important indeed.

  520. So I'm not apologising

  521. for using technical terms.

  522. What is this righteousness?

  523. What is this protection

  524. that God provides

  525. for our hearts

  526. against Satan's attack?

  527. It's not ours.

  528. What is it?

  529. It is God's righteousness

  530. provided for us

  531. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  532. And it comes to us

  533. by faith.

  534. What is it?

  535. Number one,

  536. it's imputed righteousness.

  537. Imputed righteousness.

  538. Let's go back to the reading

  539. we have from Zechariah 3.

  540. There's a really, really

  541. vivid illustration.

  542. It's a really lovely illustration

  543. tucked away in the Old Testament

  544. in Zechariah.

  545. The prophet recounts

  546. this remarkable vision

  547. that he had.

  548. And in that vision,

  549. he sees Joshua,

  550. Israel's high priest,

  551. standing before the angel of God.

  552. And when told him,

  553. can you see verse 1?

  554. Then he showed him

  555. Joshua, the high priest,

  556. standing before the angel of the Lord

  557. and Satan,

  558. standing at his right hand

  559. to accuse him.

  560. That's a brilliant summary

  561. of what the devil does.

  562. Nothing could describe

  563. more eloquently

  564. what the devil does

  565. to a Christian.

  566. The Bible calls the devil

  567. the accuser of the brethren.

  568. It's one of the titles

  569. that the Bible gives it.

  570. He's an accuser.

  571. And when we, like Joshua,

  572. stand in the presence of God

  573. and we're longing

  574. to know God more,

  575. and to fellowship with God,

  576. the devil comes alongside us

  577. and he points the finger at us

  578. and he accuses us.

  579. And the effect of that

  580. can be devastating, can't it?

  581. He dredges up our past.

  582. He brings before us our sin

  583. and he says,

  584. you,

  585. how can you expect God

  586. to hear your prayers?

  587. And there's many of us

  588. that have stopped praying

  589. and we've stopped reading

  590. our Bibles for a time

  591. precisely because of this,

  592. because the devil

  593. comes alongside us.

  594. And when we open up our Bibles

  595. and when we come to pray,

  596. these thoughts,

  597. how can someone like you

  598. expect to have fellowship

  599. with God?

  600. You're wasting more time.

  601. How can you ever expect

  602. to cross the threshold

  603. into God's presence?

  604. Don't you remember

  605. you did this yesterday?

  606. Don't you remember

  607. you did that

  608. and he accuses us

  609. and he points the finger

  610. at us and we think,

  611. oh, let's just do anything else

  612. other than this.

  613. There is practice.

  614. He is the accuser

  615. with the brethren.

  616. Now, what do you do

  617. in a situation like that?

  618. How do you handle

  619. the accusations

  620. of the devil?

  621. Well, you put on

  622. the breastplate of righteousness.

  623. What does that mean?

  624. We'll look at Zechariah 3.

  625. It's beautiful.

  626. We're told that Satan

  627. stood alongside Joshua

  628. to resist him

  629. and accuse him

  630. before God.

  631. Look at verse 2.

  632. And the Lord said to Satan,

  633. the Lord rebuke you,

  634. O Satan.

  635. The Lord who has chosen

  636. Jerusalem,

  637. rebuke you.

  638. Is not this

  639. a brand

  640. I have plucked

  641. from the burning,

  642. from the fire?

  643. God says to the devil,

  644. I am the one

  645. who has chosen you.

  646. I am the one

  647. who has chosen this man.

  648. I chose to save him

  649. or her.

  650. He or she

  651. is a brand

  652. plucked from the fire.

  653. And then you read

  654. these beautiful words.

  655. Verse 3.

  656. Now Joshua was

  657. standing

  658. before the angel

  659. clothed with filthy garments

  660. and the angel

  661. said to those

  662. who were standing

  663. before him,

  664. remove the filthy garments

  665. from him.

  666. And to him he said,

  667. behold,

  668. I have taken

  669. your iniquity,

  670. your sin,

  671. that which is within you,

  672. which is walked

  673. and always going towards sin.

  674. I have taken that

  675. away from you

  676. and I will close you

  677. with pure vestments,

  678. pure garments.

  679. That's what we mean

  680. by impurity is righteousness.

  681. It's all of this.

  682. It's his righteousness

  683. given to us

  684. in purity to us.

  685. And the moment

  686. we believe in him,

  687. the moment we trust in him,

  688. our filthy garments

  689. are taken away from us

  690. and his perfect,

  691. spotless righteousness

  692. is put on us instead.

  693. That's the heart

  694. of the gospel.

  695. The gospel is more

  696. than that

  697. but that's at the heart of it.

  698. It's what we call

  699. justification by faith.

  700. There's a transaction

  701. that takes place

  702. and it takes place

  703. in the courts of heaven.

  704. It doesn't take place

  705. in our experience.

  706. Justification

  707. is not

  708. an experience.

  709. It is a legal act

  710. that takes place

  711. the moment

  712. we believe on Christ,

  713. the moment

  714. we rely on Christ,

  715. the moment

  716. we lean heavily

  717. upon him,

  718. there is a transfer

  719. and our filthy garments,

  720. the garments

  721. of our sin,

  722. our spotted righteousness

  723. and our filthy garments

  724. they're taken from us

  725. and they're put

  726. to his account.

  727. And he who knew

  728. no sin

  729. was made sin

  730. for us.

  731. That we might be made

  732. to the righteousness

  733. of God

  734. in him.

  735. Upon a life

  736. I did not live.

  737. Upon a death

  738. I did not die.

  739. Another's life,

  740. another's death,

  741. I stake my whole eternity.

  742. That is the breastplate

  743. of righteousness.

  744. And to put it on

  745. is to understand it.

  746. To put on

  747. the breastplate

  748. of righteousness

  749. is to know

  750. that you are

  751. right with God.

  752. That's the only way

  753. you can stand up

  754. to the accusations

  755. of Satan.

  756. When he comes

  757. dreading up your past

  758. and points into your failures

  759. it's the only way

  760. you can meet him.

  761. It's to put on

  762. the breastplate

  763. of righteousness

  764. that is to be saved

  765. from Satan's accusation.

  766. Martin Luther,

  767. the great German

  768. when there was

  769. the Reformation

  770. he said that

  771. this article

  772. this kind of

  773. truth,

  774. this doctrine

  775. it was the article

  776. of a standing

  777. or falling church.

  778. Certainly what

  779. Christians stand

  780. or fall.

  781. It's where the

  782. battle is won

  783. or lost

  784. against the devil.

  785. And do you see

  786. how important

  787. this is?

  788. So many of

  789. the spiritual

  790. problems we have

  791. as Christians

  792. especially problems

  793. of assurance

  794. are due to the fact

  795. we've not put on

  796. the breastplate

  797. of righteousness.

  798. We've not understood

  799. the doctrine

  800. of justification

  801. by faith.

  802. And if you're

  803. a Christian

  804. you are justified

  805. but unless you

  806. understand what

  807. that means

  808. unless you get it

  809. or if you forget

  810. what that means

  811. then you are a

  812. prey to the enemy

  813. and it happens

  814. in lots of

  815. different ways.

  816. So what happens

  817. is Christians

  818. begin to trust

  819. in their feelings.

  820. It's so important

  821. to have feelings.

  822. I want to say

  823. if you've never

  824. felt anything

  825. in your Christianity

  826. there's something

  827. very wrong with that.

  828. I can't understand

  829. how anyone can

  830. come to God

  831. through Jesus Christ

  832. and understand

  833. that they're being

  834. saved from sin

  835. and come into fellowship

  836. with God

  837. and not feel anything.

  838. I don't understand

  839. that.

  840. It's ridiculous.

  841. You're bound

  842. to feel something.

  843. Aren't you?

  844. And feelings

  845. are very important

  846. but feelings

  847. make a really

  848. poor breastplate.

  849. And because

  850. feelings

  851. well they're here

  852. today and they've

  853. gone tomorrow

  854. eh.

  855. And if you rely

  856. on your feelings

  857. this evening

  858. the devil will

  859. really make

  860. short work on you

  861. because before

  862. you go home

  863. tonight you'll

  864. be filled with

  865. doubts and

  866. anxieties

  867. because your

  868. feelings come and

  869. go like mine do

  870. and they change

  871. with the weather.

  872. Maybe you're

  873. trusting in some

  874. past experience

  875. I was in a

  876. meeting recently

  877. where somebody

  878. called a

  879. gypsy

  880. smith

  881. the evangelist

  882. and he used

  883. to say to

  884. people I know

  885. I'm a Christian

  886. because I was

  887. there when it

  888. happened.

  889. And that

  890. sounds spiritual

  891. but it isn't

  892. right.

  893. We know what

  894. it means but

  895. the devil makes

  896. short work of

  897. that.

  898. If you trust in

  899. some past

  900. experience

  901. then the devil

  902. will come to

  903. you and what

  904. will he say?

  905. He'll say to

  906. you well it's

  907. not just

  908. psychological.

  909. He can point

  910. you to any

  911. number of

  912. people who

  913. had a

  914. similar

  915. experience

  916. Christians.

  917. And they

  918. don't even

  919. pretend to be

  920. Christians.

  921. And if you're

  922. trusting in your

  923. experience that

  924. is no

  925. protection.

  926. My hope

  927. is built on

  928. nothing less

  929. than Jesus'

  930. blood and

  931. righteousness.

  932. I dare not

  933. trust the

  934. sweetest frame

  935. but wholly

  936. lean on

  937. Jesus' name.

  938. On Christ

  939. the solid rock

  940. I stand all

  941. by the ground

  942. and the

  943. sinking

  944. side.

  945. That's the

  946. breastplate of

  947. righteousness.

  948. That's what it

  949. means to put on

  950. the breastplate

  951. of righteousness.

  952. I don't trust

  953. in my feelings.

  954. I thank God

  955. for feelings and

  956. I thank God

  957. for experiences

  958. but I don't

  959. trust in them.

  960. They're not my

  961. hope.

  962. My hope is

  963. built on

  964. nothing less

  965. than Jesus'

  966. blood and

  967. righteousness.

  968. When the

  969. devil comes

  970. and he attacks

  971. your conscience

  972. and he will

  973. and Satan

  974. comes to you

  975. and he accuses

  976. you of not

  977. being a Christian

  978. how can you

  979. be a Christian?

  980. And the

  981. devil tempts

  982. you to

  983. despair.

  984. He does.

  985. And so

  986. when Satan

  987. tempts me

  988. to despair

  989. and he tells

  990. me of the

  991. guilt within

  992. and he just

  993. sent me

  994. up where I

  995. look.

  996. That's where

  997. you look.

  998. Up where I

  999. look.

  1000. Not inward.

  1001. Up where I

  1002. look and see

  1003. him who made

  1004. an end of

  1005. all my sin.

  1006. Because the

  1007. sinless

  1008. saviour

  1009. died.

  1010. My sinful

  1011. soul is

  1012. counted

  1013. free.

  1014. For God

  1015. the just

  1016. is satisfied

  1017. to look

  1018. on him

  1019. and pardon

  1020. me.

  1021. And when

  1022. the devil

  1023. comes in

  1024. he says

  1025. how can

  1026. you possibly

  1027. call yourself

  1028. a Christian?

  1029. What do you

  1030. say to him?

  1031. You say to him

  1032. I know I'm a

  1033. sinner.

  1034. That's what

  1035. it's all about.

  1036. God knows I'm a

  1037. sinner.

  1038. So can't

  1039. promise me

  1040. about that.

  1041. You're absolutely

  1042. right devil.

  1043. I am a

  1044. sinner but I've

  1045. got a saviour.

  1046. And what's

  1047. happened is

  1048. his perfect

  1049. spotless life

  1050. has been put

  1051. to my

  1052. account and

  1053. my filthy

  1054. life has

  1055. been transferred

  1056. and put

  1057. down to him.

  1058. That's the

  1059. breastplate of

  1060. righteousness.

  1061. I'm going to

  1062. put it on.

  1063. And the

  1064. Bible says

  1065. it's the

  1066. most important

  1067. thing of all.

  1068. And the

  1069. battle against

  1070. the devil is

  1071. to know that

  1072. you're right

  1073. with God and

  1074. to know why

  1075. you're right

  1076. with God.

  1077. Not just the

  1078. hope that you

  1079. are.

  1080. So many

  1081. Christians you

  1082. ask them

  1083. are you

  1084. going to

  1085. heaven?

  1086. Are you

  1087. saved?

  1088. I say well

  1089. I hope so.

  1090. You must

  1091. know sir.

  1092. You must

  1093. know what the

  1094. breastplate of

  1095. righteousness is

  1096. all about.

  1097. To know that

  1098. you're right

  1099. with God.

  1100. To have

  1101. confidence to

  1102. meet the

  1103. enemy.

  1104. To have

  1105. confidence to

  1106. go out and

  1107. face him.

  1108. Because you

  1109. know that

  1110. the sin

  1111. issue in

  1112. your life.

  1113. The unrighteousness

  1114. issue in

  1115. your life.

  1116. Has been

  1117. dealt with

  1118. perfectly and

  1119. fully forever.

  1120. In the

  1121. life and

  1122. death of

  1123. Jesus.

  1124. Listen to

  1125. how John

  1126. puts it in

  1127. Revelation 12.

  1128. John said

  1129. like you had a

  1130. loud voice in

  1131. heaven saying

  1132. now the

  1133. salvation and

  1134. the power and

  1135. the kingdom of

  1136. our God and

  1137. the authority of

  1138. his Christ have

  1139. come for the

  1140. accuser of our

  1141. brothers has

  1142. been thrown

  1143. down.

  1144. Who accuses

  1145. them day and

  1146. night before

  1147. God and they

  1148. have conquered

  1149. him.

  1150. By the

  1151. blood of

  1152. the Lamb.

  1153. And by the

  1154. word of their

  1155. testimony for

  1156. they loved not

  1157. their lives even

  1158. unto death.

  1159. Therefore rejoice

  1160. O heavens and

  1161. you who dwell

  1162. in them but

  1163. woe to your

  1164. earth and see for

  1165. the devil has

  1166. come down to

  1167. you in great

  1168. wrath because he

  1169. knows his

  1170. time is short.

  1171. They overcame

  1172. it.

  1173. And the

  1174. accuser of the

  1175. brethren is

  1176. cast down.

  1177. They overcame

  1178. it.

  1179. How did they

  1180. overcome it?

  1181. By the

  1182. blood of

  1183. the Lamb.

  1184. That is the

  1185. breastplate of

  1186. righteousness.

  1187. The

  1188. righteousness of

  1189. Jesus Christ

  1190. puts to our

  1191. account the

  1192. moment we

  1193. believe in

  1194. him.

  1195. And our

  1196. sinfulness

  1197. imputed to

  1198. him.

  1199. So that now

  1200. we believe.

  1201. the righteousness

  1202. that God

  1203. provides us in

  1204. our fight

  1205. against the

  1206. devil is not

  1207. our own.

  1208. We can never

  1209. stand up against

  1210. the devil's

  1211. attack.

  1212. And we can

  1213. never stand up

  1214. to the scrutiny

  1215. of a holy

  1216. God.

  1217. And so this

  1218. righteousness,

  1219. Christ's

  1220. righteousness is

  1221. imputed to

  1222. us.

  1223. Provided for

  1224. us in the

  1225. life and death

  1226. of Jesus.

  1227. It becomes

  1228. ours by

  1229. faith.

  1230. Don't believe

  1231. it.

  1232. You go to

  1233. the pub,

  1234. you're leaving

  1235. in the pub

  1236. with your

  1237. friends.

  1238. And one of

  1239. your friends

  1240. sets up a

  1241. tab.

  1242. It's very

  1243. generous.

  1244. And so you

  1245. go to the

  1246. bar and

  1247. the barmaid

  1248. says that'll

  1249. be £20 for

  1250. two pints

  1251. or whatever

  1252. ridiculously it

  1253. is.

  1254. And she

  1255. says that'll

  1256. be £25.

  1257. And you

  1258. say, what

  1259. do you

  1260. say?

  1261. You say,

  1262. oh, put it

  1263. on the tab.

  1264. You put it

  1265. on his

  1266. tab.

  1267. And your

  1268. friend, at

  1269. the end of

  1270. the night, he

  1271. picks up the

  1272. tab.

  1273. Put it to

  1274. our

  1275. account.

  1276. And that's

  1277. what Christ

  1278. has done.

  1279. He has

  1280. put us

  1281. into his

  1282. account.

  1283. This perfect

  1284. life has been

  1285. put to our

  1286. account, imputed

  1287. righteousness.

  1288. But that

  1289. righteousness which

  1290. is ours in

  1291. Christ, and I'll

  1292. try and be

  1293. brief here, is

  1294. also imparted

  1295. to us, secondly,

  1296. by the Holy

  1297. Spirit.

  1298. The

  1299. righteousness

  1300. which is

  1301. ours in

  1302. Christ, which

  1303. is put to

  1304. our account, is

  1305. also imparted

  1306. to us by the

  1307. Holy Spirit.

  1308. And you

  1309. must never

  1310. separate those

  1311. two things.

  1312. You must

  1313. never separate

  1314. imputed

  1315. righteousness and

  1316. imparted

  1317. righteousness.

  1318. They belong

  1319. together.

  1320. And they're

  1321. woven together in

  1322. this breastplate.

  1323. To put it

  1324. doctrinally, you

  1325. must never

  1326. separate

  1327. justification,

  1328. that God

  1329. declares us

  1330. right because of

  1331. Christ's

  1332. righteousness, with

  1333. sanctification,

  1334. which is being

  1335. set apart and

  1336. increasingly set

  1337. apart for God.

  1338. Where there's

  1339. one there, there

  1340. has to be the

  1341. other.

  1342. And so the

  1343. person who has

  1344. been put right

  1345. with God will

  1346. begin to live

  1347. righteously before

  1348. him.

  1349. That's part of our

  1350. protection too.

  1351. And so James, in

  1352. his official, he

  1353. tells us, can we

  1354. see that?

  1355. He says, resist

  1356. the devil.

  1357. He doesn't

  1358. incidentally tell

  1359. you to rebuke

  1360. the devil.

  1361. How many

  1362. were ever

  1363. told that?

  1364. And he

  1365. says, resist

  1366. the devil.

  1367. And you may

  1368. say, well how

  1369. on earth can I

  1370. resist the

  1371. devil?

  1372. We're not

  1373. talking about

  1374. a comic

  1375. strip figure.

  1376. He's not a

  1377. cartoon character

  1378. with horns and

  1379. hooves and a

  1380. tail.

  1381. We're talking

  1382. about the one

  1383. in the Bible

  1384. who's described

  1385. as the prince

  1386. of the power

  1387. of the air,

  1388. the spirit

  1389. who is now

  1390. aware in those

  1391. who are

  1392. disobedient.

  1393. I'm no

  1394. man for

  1395. him.

  1396. Can I

  1397. read you?

  1398. Well yes

  1399. you are,

  1400. says James.

  1401. Look what it

  1402. says.

  1403. It says, resist

  1404. the devil.

  1405. And you can

  1406. resist it.

  1407. And you can

  1408. see him fleeing

  1409. from you.

  1410. How is that

  1411. possible?

  1412. Well listen to

  1413. this, verse 7

  1414. and 8.

  1415. Resist the

  1416. devil and he

  1417. will flee

  1418. from you.

  1419. Draw near to

  1420. God and he

  1421. will draw near

  1422. to you.

  1423. Cleanse

  1424. your hands

  1425. you sinners

  1426. and purify

  1427. your hearts

  1428. you double

  1429. minded.

  1430. You see

  1431. resistance to

  1432. the devil,

  1433. it grows

  1434. out of

  1435. Christian

  1436. living.

  1437. You see

  1438. you will

  1439. not see

  1440. him run

  1441. away from

  1442. you unless

  1443. you are

  1444. living

  1445. righteously

  1446. before God.

  1447. Unless you

  1448. are submitting

  1449. to God,

  1450. unless you're

  1451. drawing near

  1452. to God.

  1453. Unless you're

  1454. cleansing your

  1455. hearts and

  1456. purifying,

  1457. cleansing your

  1458. hands and

  1459. purifying your

  1460. hearts.

  1461. When Peter

  1462. describes the

  1463. devil, can

  1464. you see it?

  1465. He's like a

  1466. roaring lion

  1467. who wanders

  1468. about seeking

  1469. whom he may

  1470. devour.

  1471. And what does

  1472. Peter say?

  1473. Peter says

  1474. resist him.

  1475. Stand against

  1476. him.

  1477. How can I

  1478. resist a

  1479. roaring lion?

  1480. How can I

  1481. do that?

  1482. I'm no match

  1483. for a roaring

  1484. lion.

  1485. Well yes,

  1486. you are,

  1487. the Bible

  1488. says.

  1489. Because look

  1490. at that last

  1491. verse, it's a

  1492. beautiful proverb

  1493. isn't it?

  1494. The wicked

  1495. flee when no

  1496. one pursues,

  1497. but the

  1498. righteous are

  1499. as bold as

  1500. a lion.

  1501. There's guilt

  1502. for you,

  1503. isn't there?

  1504. Let's start

  1505. with that verse.

  1506. There's guilt

  1507. for you.

  1508. A man who

  1509. is guilty,

  1510. a man whose

  1511. sin has not

  1512. been dealt

  1513. with by the

  1514. blood of

  1515. Christ,

  1516. and that

  1517. man runs

  1518. when no

  1519. one is

  1520. chasing

  1521. him.

  1522. He's

  1523. always

  1524. looking over

  1525. his shoulder.

  1526. He knows

  1527. there's someone

  1528. attacking him,

  1529. but actually

  1530. there's no one

  1531. attacking him

  1532. at all.

  1533. That's how you

  1534. recognise guilt.

  1535. The wicked

  1536. flee when no

  1537. one is chasing

  1538. them, but the

  1539. righteous will

  1540. be as bold

  1541. as a lion.

  1542. And so

  1543. those of you

  1544. who are in

  1545. Christ,

  1546. you are more

  1547. than a match

  1548. for Satan.

  1549. And if you

  1550. are trusting

  1551. in the

  1552. righteousness

  1553. of Christ,

  1554. and if you

  1555. are living

  1556. that justified

  1557. life,

  1558. living righteously

  1559. before God,

  1560. by the Spirit

  1561. you can stand.

  1562. And you

  1563. can resist.

  1564. And you

  1565. can see the

  1566. devil running

  1567. away from you.

  1568. And so

  1569. therefore take

  1570. up the

  1571. whole armour

  1572. of God,

  1573. that you

  1574. may be able

  1575. to stand

  1576. in the

  1577. evil day,

  1578. having done

  1579. all to

  1580. stand firm,

  1581. stand

  1582. therefore,

  1583. having fastened

  1584. on the

  1585. belt of

  1586. truth,

  1587. and having

  1588. put on the

  1589. breastplate of

  1590. righteousness.

  1591. Heavenly

  1592. Father,

  1593. we
