  1. And turn your Bibles to John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  2. John finishes this chapter by saying,

  3. ! Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples,

  4. ! which are not written in this book,

  5. but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God,

  6. and that believing you may have life in His name.

  7. Think of John writing this book.

  8. This is toward the end of his life that he's writing this.

  9. John has a purpose in writing.

  10. He says, there are so many things I could have included,

  11. but I was selective in what I put in.

  12. Selective for the purpose of your knowing that Jesus Christ,

  13. Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

  14. So John is thinking about what else has been written.

  15. In the years since Jesus died and was raised again,

  16. up to this time when John is writing,

  17. Mark and Matthew and Luke had written Gospels,

  18. each of them from a little bit different perspective,

  19. covering a lot of the same accounts and things that Jesus said.

  20. John is thinking what needs to be said still so that people can believe that Jesus is the Christ,

  21. the Son of God,

  22. and that people can have life in His name.

  23. In my experience in preaching in different places,

  24. John is thinking,

  25. what is it that has been lacking perhaps?

  26. What is it that people have been struggling with in the years since Jesus' resurrection?

  27. And how can I answer those things in writing this Gospel?

  28. How can I help them to understand better?

  29. So John thinks about the things that have been written already.

  30. He thinks about the things that are established,

  31. the things that people can believe already.

  32. But when he comes to the resurrection,

  33. he thinks,

  34. how can I answer the questions that are still there for certain people?

  35. And so that's why he thinks,

  36. well, let me portray two different people

  37. who have certain issues with the resurrection

  38. and show how Jesus answers those issues

  39. and how Jesus satisfies the concerns that they have.

  40. In doing that,

  41. Jesus is not just thinking about people in his own day,

  42. but he's writing this down

  43. so that after he's gone,

  44. people like us can read it.

  45. And he can answer those questions as well.

  46. And in the goodness of God

  47. and the work of the Holy Spirit

  48. who helps John in writing this Gospel,

  49. he doesn't just answer questions of his own day,

  50. but he answers questions from our own day.

  51. For example,

  52. there are people,

  53. particularly in Islam,

  54. who would say,

  55. well, Jesus didn't really die on the cross

  56. because he was a good man

  57. and Allah would not let a good man die on the cross.

  58. But John has already told us

  59. of a conversation between himself,

  60. the beloved disciple,

  61. and Jesus' own mother

  62. talking about how John is to become like her son

  63. and take care of her after Jesus is gone.

  64. So Jesus has put two very trusted people

  65. who intimately know Jesus,

  66. who could not be deceived,

  67. having a conversation with Jesus at the cross.

  68. How can we possibly say

  69. it wasn't really Jesus who died?

  70. So John,

  71. there in the goodness of the Holy Spirit,

  72. is answering a question

  73. that he didn't even know was going to come up

  74. and showing that it really was Jesus who died.

  75. Some people,

  76. like liberals in the past,

  77. have said,

  78. well,

  79. Jesus didn't really die

  80. because we don't believe

  81. that a resurrection is possible.

  82. We have to have an explanation

  83. that is scientifically possible.

  84. So we will just believe

  85. that Jesus

  86. seemed to die on the cross,

  87. and then they took him

  88. and they buried him in a tomb

  89. and laying there

  90. in the cool darkness,

  91. he just kind of revived

  92. and came back.

  93. Well,

  94. I find that harder to believe

  95. than the resurrection,

  96. but if you want to,

  97. if you,

  98. if you want to consider that,

  99. John is already,

  100. along with the other

  101. writers of the gospel,

  102. he's already answered

  103. all those questions.

  104. He had the most professional

  105. execution team

  106. of that day,

  107. the Roman soldiers,

  108. who have certified

  109. that Jesus has died.

  110. They didn't do a sloppy job of it.

  111. They were certain

  112. that he was dead.

  113. And not only that,

  114. but Joseph of Arimathea

  115. went to Pontius Pilate

  116. and asked for the body of Jesus

  117. so that he could bury him.

  118. And Pontius Pilate

  119. certifies with the,

  120. with the,

  121. the man in charge,

  122. the centurion in charge,

  123. that Jesus was indeed dead.

  124. Now,

  125. what about witnesses?

  126. Who would be the best witnesses

  127. that he had died?

  128. Well,

  129. if you want to get

  130. reliable witnesses,

  131. how about two members

  132. of the council

  133. of the Sanhedrin

  134. that was responsible

  135. for Israel?

  136. Here are two men,

  137. Joseph of Arimathea

  138. and Nicodemus,

  139. who didn't just send

  140. some,

  141. some low level servant

  142. and say,

  143. go get the body

  144. and put it in a tomb someplace.

  145. But John makes it very clear

  146. that they went personally,

  147. they got the body,

  148. and even if others

  149. were helping them,

  150. they were involved

  151. in not just carrying the body

  152. and quickly dumping it

  153. into a tomb,

  154. but wrapping it in spices

  155. and linen,

  156. linen,

  157. strips of linen.

  158. So they knew

  159. for certain.

  160. Here are two members

  161. of the Sanhedrin

  162. who were witnesses.

  163. So it is clear

  164. that Jesus has died.

  165. There's no question

  166. about that at all.

  167. John is also thinking

  168. about his own day

  169. when he hears people

  170. outside the window

  171. of his home

  172. marching down the street

  173. and chanting,

  174. Caesar is Lord,

  175. Caesar is God.

  176. That's the thing

  177. that people want

  178. to believe.

  179. And John wants

  180. to answer that

  181. with Jesus is Lord

  182. and Jesus is God.

  183. And so he picks

  184. these two people

  185. to help him answer

  186. those questions.

  187. The two people

  188. he chooses

  189. are Mary Magdalene

  190. and Thomas Didymus.

  191. There's also a belief

  192. that a lot of people

  193. in our own day

  194. would set forward,

  195. and that is

  196. that the disciples

  197. really needed

  198. to have erased Jesus

  199. or to resurrect Jesus.

  200. And so they made

  201. this plot,

  202. this scam

  203. to put over

  204. other people

  205. that they stole

  206. away his body,

  207. that they hid it

  208. in some other place

  209. and then they all

  210. agreed,

  211. made a compact

  212. together,

  213. that they would

  214. proclaim that Jesus

  215. was raised

  216. from the dead

  217. even though he was

  218. not raised

  219. from the dead.

  220. But the problem

  221. is,

  222. and John

  223. answers this,

  224. the problem

  225. is that the

  226. disciples didn't

  227. believe that Jesus

  228. would be raised

  229. from the dead.

  230. And we see that

  231. very clearly

  232. in these two people,

  233. Mary and Thomas.

  234. We see it in others

  235. as well,

  236. but we see it

  237. very clearly in them.

  238. It wasn't a plot

  239. they came up with.

  240. It was something

  241. that they did not

  242. even believe

  243. at the time

  244. until they were

  245. compelled to believe

  246. despite what their

  247. heart and mind

  248. told them.

  249. The first of these

  250. is Mary Magdalene.

  251. Mary Magdalene,

  252. Luke tells us,

  253. was one of the

  254. women who followed

  255. Jesus.

  256. She came down

  257. from Galilee

  258. with them.

  259. They cared for

  260. Jesus and the

  261. disciples.

  262. They provided for

  263. them out of their

  264. own resources.

  265. Mary Magdalene

  266. was a woman who

  267. was devoted to

  268. caring for Jesus.

  269. And a reason that

  270. she was devoted

  271. to that is because

  272. Luke tells us

  273. that Jesus cast

  274. seven demons

  275. out of her.

  276. So her life was

  277. transformed by

  278. what Jesus had

  279. done.

  280. Jesus had made

  281. her into a new

  282. person and set

  283. her free.

  284. And therefore,

  285. she was devoted

  286. to caring for him.

  287. Now when Mary

  288. Magdalene comes

  289. to the tomb,

  290. she comes early

  291. upon this morning.

  292. You would read

  293. that in the first

  294. few verses of

  295. the chapter.

  296. Also, we're told

  297. else in Luke

  298. believe that she

  299. came with other

  300. women and they

  301. brought the spices.

  302. They brought these

  303. things to care for

  304. Jesus.

  305. Were they expecting

  306. a resurrected Jesus?

  307. They were expecting

  308. a corpse.

  309. And that's why

  310. they came prepared

  311. to care for a

  312. corpse.

  313. So Mary Magdalene

  314. comes.

  315. She's the first one

  316. that John talks

  317. about at the

  318. beginning of

  319. John chapter 20.

    John 20 chapter mention

  320. But when she

  321. gets there,

  322. she finds the

  323. body's gone.

  324. She comes back

  325. and she reports

  326. to the disciples,

  327. they have taken

  328. the Lord out

  329. of the tomb.

  330. We do not know

  331. where they have

  332. laid him.

  333. The idea that

  334. Jesus is raised

  335. from the dead

  336. doesn't enter

  337. her mind.

  338. Instead, she's

  339. thinking, we came

  340. to wrap this corpse

  341. and to take care

  342. of it, but it's

  343. gone.

  344. They have taken

  345. it.

  346. I don't know

  347. who's taken

  348. it.

  349. Is it Joseph

  350. and Nicodemus,

  351. have they taken

  352. it to another

  353. tomb?

  354. Have the officials

  355. come and taken

  356. it?

  357. Has someone

  358. stolen it

  359. away?

  360. All she thinks

  361. is the corpse

  362. is gone.

  363. So she's

  364. weighted down

  365. with the

  366. impact of

  367. her faith

  368. has lost

  369. its object.

  370. Even the corpse

  371. that she longs

  372. to express her

  373. grief by caring

  374. for has

  375. disappeared.

  376. What's going

  377. to happen to

  378. her now?

  379. So she goes

  380. back to the

  381. tomb and she's

  382. weeping there.

  383. Weeping and

  384. wondering, where

  385. will my life

  386. go from here?

  387. Will I go

  388. back to Galilee?

  389. What purpose

  390. will I have?

  391. Will my demons

  392. come back

  393. without Jesus

  394. there to

  395. protect me?

  396. So she is

  397. clearly grieving

  398. the death of

  399. Jesus and the

  400. loss to her.

  401. She has no

  402. hope that he

  403. is raised.

  404. She only is

  405. full of grief.

  406. She doesn't

  407. know who

  408. might have

  409. taken him

  410. away.

  411. In verse

  412. 2 she

  413. talks about

  414. they have

  415. taken him

  416. away.

  417. And in

  418. verse 13

  419. and 15

  420. as well

  421. she says

  422. to the

  423. angels,

  424. they said

  425. to her,

  426. woman,

  427. why are you

  428. weeping?

  429. She said

  430. to them,

  431. they have

  432. taken away

  433. my Lord

  434. and I do

  435. not know

  436. where they

  437. have laid

  438. him.

  439. That's the

  440. reason she's

  441. weeping.

  442. But also

  443. when Jesus

  444. appears,

  445. she thinks

  446. he's the

  447. gardener and

  448. thinks,

  449. have you

  450. taken him

  451. away?

  452. And asks

  453. him that

  454. question.

  455. She's wondering

  456. what has

  457. happened to

  458. Jesus.

  459. In contrast

  460. to her

  461. sense of

  462. hopelessness

  463. and just

  464. being loaded

  465. down with

  466. grief,

  467. the angels

  468. respond to

  469. her,

  470. they say,

  471. woman,

  472. why are

  473. you weeping?

  474. From the

  475. heavenly

  476. perspective,

  477. it doesn't

  478. make sense

  479. to weep

  480. because Jesus

  481. is raised.

  482. And when

  483. Jesus responds

  484. to her in

  485. verse 15,

  486. he says,

  487. woman,

  488. why are you

  489. weeping?

  490. Whom are you

  491. seeking?

  492. Then she

  493. turns when

  494. she hears

  495. this man

  496. speaking to

  497. her,

  498. she says,

  499. supposing him

  500. to be the

  501. gardener,

  502. she said to

  503. him,

  504. sir,

  505. have you

  506. have carried

  507. him away?

  508. Tell me

  509. where have

  510. you laid

  511. him,

  512. and I

  513. will take

  514. him away.

  515. She turned

  516. around,

  517. in verse

  518. 14,

  519. she turned

  520. around and

  521. saw Jesus

  522. standing there,

  523. but she

  524. did not

  525. know that

  526. it was

  527. Jesus.

  528. Even when

  529. Jesus spoke

  530. to her,

  531. woman,

  532. why are you

  533. weeping?

  534. Whom are you

  535. seeking?

  536. It's a bit

  537. of a mystery

  538. why she

  539. didn't

  540. recognize

  541. Jesus.

  542. Maybe it

  543. was the

  544. early morning

  545. light.

  546. maybe it

  547. was her

  548. face being

  549. covered over

  550. in the

  551. early morning

  552. chills,

  553. she was

  554. covered over

  555. and even

  556. Jesus may

  557. have had

  558. something over

  559. his head.

  560. Maybe she's

  561. just being

  562. culturally

  563. reserved and

  564. not looking in

  565. the face of

  566. a man that

  567. she doesn't

  568. recognize.

  569. But what is

  570. it that turns

  571. her heart so

  572. that she

  573. recognizes

  574. Jesus?

  575. Obviously,

  576. the most

  577. serious problem

  578. with her

  579. recognizing him

  580. is she had

  581. no anticipation

  582. whatsoever that

  583. it would be

  584. Jesus speaking

  585. to her.

  586. She only

  587. thought it

  588. might be

  589. the gardener.

  590. What is it

  591. that turns

  592. her heart

  593. and changes

  594. her perspective?

  595. Jesus said

  596. to her,

  597. Mary.

  598. That one

  599. word brings

  600. her response.

  601. She turned

  602. and said to

  603. him in

  604. Aramaic,

  605. Rabboni,

  606. which means

  607. teacher.

  608. It was a

  609. personal

  610. recognition.

  611. It was

  612. Jesus speaking

  613. her name.

  614. Not just

  615. her name

  616. in a generic

  617. sense,

  618. but her

  619. name,

  620. Miriam.

  621. The name

  622. that she

  623. knew from

  624. her own

  625. heart language.

  626. When she

  627. heard him

  628. speak her

  629. name,

  630. she knew

  631. who he

  632. was.

  633. And her

  634. response to

  635. him is to

  636. call him

  637. Rabboni.

  638. Not just

  639. rabbi as a

  640. general class

  641. of people,

  642. but specifically

  643. this word is

  644. my teacher,

  645. my beloved

  646. teacher.

  647. She is

  648. relating to

  649. him personally.

  650. It's a

  651. personal

  652. recognition,

  653. a personal

  654. connection with

  655. Jesus which

  656. is reestablished.

  657. He's

  658. transformed in

  659. her own

  660. perception from

  661. being some

  662. gardener unknown

  663. to her to

  664. being the one

  665. who has

  666. delivered her.

  667. What does

  668. Jesus say to

  669. her?

  670. Jesus says,

  671. do not

  672. cling to

  673. me,

  674. for I

  675. have not

  676. yet ascended

  677. to my

  678. father.

  679. But go to

  680. my brothers

  681. and say to

  682. them,

  683. I am ascending

  684. to my

  685. father and

  686. to your

  687. father,

  688. to my

  689. God and

  690. to your

  691. God.

  692. Mary in

  693. her heart

  694. reaching out

  695. to Jesus,

  696. her devotion

  697. to him,

  698. one of the

  699. other gospels

  700. says,

  701. she took

  702. a hold of

  703. him by

  704. the feet.

  705. Jesus says,

  706. don't cling

  707. to me

  708. before I

  709. have not

  710. ascended to

  711. my father.

  712. In a way

  713. he's saying

  714. to her,

  715. Mary,

  716. what you

  717. need is

  718. not me

  719. here,

  720. that you

  721. can touch

  722. me.

  723. What you

  724. need is

  725. me

  726. resurrected,

  727. me at

  728. my father's

  729. side,

  730. that I

  731. can be

  732. your Lord

  733. and Savior

  734. from there,

  735. that I

  736. can save

  737. not just

  738. you,

  739. but many

  740. others as

  741. well.

  742. Don't cling

  743. to my

  744. body,

  745. but hold

  746. on to

  747. who I

  748. am.

  749. He says,

  750. go and

  751. tell my

  752. brothers,

  753. I am

  754. saying to

  755. them,

  756. I'm ascending

  757. to my

  758. father and

  759. to your

  760. father,

  761. to my

  762. God and

  763. to your

  764. God.

  765. Again,

  766. the focus

  767. is on the

  768. relationship

  769. and a

  770. change in

  771. relationship.

  772. Instead of

  773. I'm ascending

  774. to my

  775. father and

  776. to my

  777. God,

  778. because I

  779. have raised

  780. from the

  781. dead,

  782. I'm also

  783. ascending

  784. to your

  785. father,

  786. your

  787. plural

  788. father and

  789. to your

  790. plural

  791. God.

  792. All of

  793. you belong

  794. to him

  795. because of

  796. my going

  797. to him,

  798. because of

  799. that

  800. relationship.

  801. Notice

  802. what she

  803. says when

  804. she goes

  805. back,

  806. verse

  807. 18,

  808. Mary Magdalene

  809. went and

  810. announced to

  811. the disciples,

  812. I have

  813. seen the

  814. Lord.

  815. And that

  816. he had

  817. said these

  818. things to

  819. her.

  820. The first

  821. thing she

  822. says is

  823. not the

  824. quote.

  825. The first

  826. thing she

  827. says,

  828. I have

  829. seen the

  830. Lord.

  831. Her eyes

  832. have been

  833. opened.

  834. She knows

  835. he's

  836. raised

  837. again.

  838. She knows

  839. that the

  840. one that

  841. she is

  842. certain was

  843. dead is

  844. just as

  845. certainly

  846. alive.

  847. The

  848. needs of

  849. Mary's

  850. heart are

  851. satisfied by

  852. Jesus'

  853. resurrection.

  854. Her

  855. heart is

  856. at peace

  857. and at

  858. rest because

  859. she's

  860. compelled to

  861. believe what

  862. she thought

  863. was impossible

  864. to believe.

  865. The second

  866. person that

  867. John writes

  868. about is

  869. specifically

  870. is Thomas

  871. Didymus.

  872. The name

  873. Thomas means

  874. twin.

  875. The name

  876. Didymus means

  877. twin in

  878. Greek.

  879. So Aramaic

  880. and Greek

  881. he's twin

  882. twin.

  883. We often

  884. think of

  885. him as

  886. doubting

  887. Thomas.

  888. But I'd

  889. like us to

  890. think of

  891. him differently.

  892. Thomas is

  893. the one who

  894. sees the

  895. side of

  896. things that

  897. we don't

  898. necessarily

  899. want to

  900. see.

  901. Sometimes

  902. we're trying

  903. very hard

  904. to be an

  905. optimist

  906. and Thomas

  907. is the one

  908. who brings

  909. us back

  910. to reality

  911. and points

  912. out the way

  913. things really

  914. are.

  915. in John

    John 11:16

  916. chapter 11

  917. verse 16

  918. Jesus is

  919. getting this

  920. report that

  921. his friend

  922. Lazarus has

  923. died.

  924. They have

  925. been near

  926. Jerusalem and

  927. there were

  928. threats on

  929. Jesus' life

  930. and Thomas

  931. like the others

  932. knew that

  933. threats on

  934. Jesus' life

  935. were also a

  936. threat to

  937. them.

  938. Jesus says

  939. he died

  940. and now

  941. we're going

  942. to go to

  943. him.

  944. And Thomas

  945. is the one

  946. who says

  947. well then

  948. let us go

  949. back to

  950. Judea and

  951. die with

  952. him.

  953. Thomas is

  954. not saying

  955. well if you

  956. want to go

  957. to Judea

  958. that's your

  959. own business

  960. take your

  961. own risks

  962. we're going

  963. back to

  964. Galilee

  965. where it's

  966. safe.

  967. Thomas says

  968. if you're

  969. going to

  970. Judea

  971. we're all

  972. going to

  973. go with

  974. you

  975. even if

  976. it means

  977. to death.

  978. Thomas is

  979. committed

  980. and he sees

  981. the reality

  982. of things

  983. as they

  984. are.

  985. In John

    John 14 chapter mention

  986. chapter 14

  987. we hear

  988. from Thomas

  989. again.

  990. Jesus is

  991. in the upper

  992. room and he's

  993. talking to his

  994. disciples about

  995. how he is

  996. the way and

  997. he's going to

  998. prepare a place

  999. for them.

  1000. And Thomas is

  1001. they're all

  1002. asking these

  1003. various questions

  1004. but Thomas is

  1005. the one who

  1006. just brings it

  1007. right down to

  1008. the focal

  1009. question and

  1010. he says

  1011. Lord we

  1012. don't know

  1013. where you're

  1014. going so

  1015. how can we

  1016. know the

  1017. way?

  1018. Thomas is

  1019. the one who's

  1020. going to ask

  1021. the question

  1022. that the rest

  1023. of us haven't

  1024. thought of or the

  1025. question that we

  1026. don't dare to

  1027. ask.

  1028. The question

  1029. we think is

  1030. just a little

  1031. bit too

  1032. bold faced.

  1033. Thomas is the

  1034. one who's going

  1035. to ask that

  1036. question.

  1037. So Thomas

  1038. serves us well

  1039. because he's

  1040. the one who

  1041. asks questions

  1042. that we need

  1043. to ask.

  1044. The questions

  1045. that are going

  1046. to be on our

  1047. hearts later

  1048. on.

  1049. If you think

  1050. about the

  1051. Lord of the

  1052. Rings you

  1053. remember the

  1054. character of

  1055. Gimli.

  1056. Gimli is that

  1057. dwarf with a

  1058. heavy beard

  1059. and his big

  1060. axe and he's

  1061. the one where

  1062. they come to

  1063. the point and

  1064. they realize

  1065. that if

  1066. I was thinking

  1067. Frodo but it's

  1068. not Frodo is

  1069. it?

  1070. Who's going to

  1071. go and get

  1072. rid of the

  1073. ring?

  1074. Frodo.

  1075. Okay.

  1076. Why does that

  1077. slip away from

  1078. me?

  1079. So they think

  1080. well how is

  1081. Frodo going to

  1082. go and get

  1083. rid of the

  1084. ring when he's

  1085. got to go

  1086. right to the

  1087. enemy territory?

  1088. And so they

  1089. say well we

  1090. need to fight

  1091. as a distraction.

  1092. We need to

  1093. go and take

  1094. on this

  1095. enemy army.

  1096. And Gimli is

  1097. the one who

  1098. states the

  1099. obvious.

  1100. The thing that

  1101. nobody else

  1102. wants to say.

  1103. He says

  1104. overwhelming odds?

  1105. Certain chance

  1106. of death?

  1107. What are we

  1108. waiting for?

  1109. He's Thomas.

  1110. Thomas Didymus.

  1111. He's the one

  1112. who's stating

  1113. the obvious.

  1114. There's not a

  1115. question about

  1116. Thomas'

  1117. commitment.

  1118. His faith.

  1119. His willingness

  1120. to die.

  1121. He's committed

  1122. to the cause.

  1123. He's ready.

  1124. But he's the

  1125. one who's going

  1126. to state the

  1127. things that we

  1128. don't see.

  1129. Thomas wasn't

  1130. at the cross.

  1131. The only

  1132. disciple there

  1133. was John.

  1134. Thomas was not

  1135. there on that

  1136. first Sunday.

  1137. And so on that

  1138. first Sunday,

  1139. the day that's

  1140. being recorded

  1141. here, the day

  1142. of the resurrection,

  1143. Mary comes back

  1144. and says,

  1145. I've seen the

  1146. Lord.

  1147. Thomas misses

  1148. that.

  1149. Peter and

  1150. John come

  1151. back and

  1152. say, the

  1153. tomb is

  1154. empty.

  1155. And John

  1156. says, I

  1157. believe, I

  1158. believe he's

  1159. resurrected.

  1160. Thomas is

  1161. not there.

  1162. Later that

  1163. evening,

  1164. Cleopas and

  1165. another man

  1166. who met

  1167. Jesus on the

  1168. road to

  1169. Emmaus, they

  1170. come back and

  1171. they say, we've

  1172. seen the

  1173. Lord.

  1174. Thomas is

  1175. not there.

  1176. And then

  1177. they're all

  1178. gathered together

  1179. when those

  1180. men come in.

  1181. And Jesus

  1182. himself appears.

  1183. And Thomas

  1184. is not there.

  1185. So Thomas,

  1186. one of the

  1187. twelve, was

  1188. not with

  1189. them when

  1190. Jesus came.

  1191. And the

  1192. other disciples

  1193. told him, we

  1194. have seen the

  1195. Lord.

  1196. The same thing

  1197. that Mary

  1198. Magdalene said,

  1199. we have seen

  1200. the Lord.

  1201. And it

  1202. doesn't just

  1203. say that they

  1204. told him, it

  1205. says they

  1206. kept telling

  1207. him.

  1208. That's the

  1209. word there.

  1210. He's hearing

  1211. this over and

  1212. over.

  1213. Everybody he

  1214. talks to says,

  1215. we have seen

  1216. the Lord.

  1217. And Thomas'

  1218. response is,

  1219. I'm just

  1220. not ready

  1221. to believe.

  1222. I'm just

  1223. not ready

  1224. to believe.

  1225. John, in a

  1226. way, is

  1227. asking the

  1228. question that

  1229. needs to be

  1230. asked for

  1231. our own

  1232. day, so

  1233. that Jesus

  1234. can satisfy

  1235. that.

  1236. Thomas has

  1237. been the

  1238. scientist.

  1239. I need to

  1240. be able to

  1241. see it and

  1242. to touch it.

  1243. I need to

  1244. have verifiable

  1245. evidence that

  1246. Jesus is

  1247. raised.

  1248. I can't

  1249. just believe

  1250. what the

  1251. rest of

  1252. you are

  1253. saying.

  1254. So he's

  1255. asking that

  1256. question, a

  1257. question that

  1258. we need to

  1259. have asked.

  1260. So Thomas

  1261. was not with

  1262. him.

  1263. The other

  1264. disciples keep

  1265. telling him,

  1266. we've seen

  1267. the Lord.

  1268. But he

  1269. said to

  1270. them, unless

  1271. I see in

  1272. his hands

  1273. the mark of

  1274. the nails and

  1275. place my

  1276. finger into

  1277. the mark of

  1278. the nails and

  1279. place my

  1280. hand into

  1281. his side, I

  1282. will never

  1283. believe.

  1284. Eight days

  1285. later his

  1286. disciples were

  1287. inside again

  1288. and Thomas

  1289. was with

  1290. them, although

  1291. the doors were

  1292. locked just as

  1293. they were last

  1294. week.

  1295. Jesus came and

  1296. stood among

  1297. them and said,

  1298. peace be with

  1299. you.

  1300. The same thing

  1301. he said last

  1302. week.

  1303. But then the

  1304. next, very

  1305. next thing he

  1306. says is to

  1307. Thomas, put

  1308. your finger here

  1309. and see my

  1310. hands.

  1311. Put out your

  1312. hand, place it

  1313. in my side.

  1314. Stop, do not

  1315. disbelieve, but

  1316. believe.

  1317. Jesus doesn't

  1318. say, Thomas,

  1319. what's wrong

  1320. with you?

  1321. Why can't you

  1322. believe?

  1323. But instead

  1324. Jesus says,

  1325. Thomas, here's

  1326. what you need

  1327. to touch, to

  1328. see.

  1329. Do that,

  1330. Thomas, and

  1331. then stop your

  1332. unbelieving and

  1333. believe.

  1334. Did Thomas

  1335. touch Jesus?

  1336. It doesn't

  1337. say, does it?

  1338. But Thomas'

  1339. response,

  1340. Thomas' answer

  1341. was my

  1342. Lord and

  1343. my God.

  1344. And John

  1345. hears people

  1346. chanting outside

  1347. his place as

  1348. the procession

  1349. passes, Caesar

  1350. is Lord,

  1351. Caesar is

  1352. God.

  1353. And what

  1354. those words

  1355. really mean is

  1356. Caesar is a

  1357. certain kind

  1358. of Lord.

  1359. He's in

  1360. charge of the

  1361. Roman Empire

  1362. and we hold

  1363. him in great

  1364. honor because

  1365. of that.

  1366. He is one

  1367. kind of Lord,

  1368. he is a

  1369. political Lord.

  1370. Lord.

  1371. And when

  1372. they say

  1373. Caesar is

  1374. God, they

  1375. mean Caesar

  1376. is, he's

  1377. part of all

  1378. this great

  1379. collection of

  1380. gods.

  1381. He fits in

  1382. there someplace.

  1383. He fits in

  1384. the category

  1385. of being a

  1386. God.

  1387. But John

  1388. answers that

  1389. slogan of

  1390. his day by

  1391. putting these

  1392. words in

  1393. Thomas'

  1394. mouth.

  1395. Thomas answered

  1396. him, my

  1397. Lord and

  1398. my God.

  1399. He's not

  1400. just a

  1401. Lord, he

  1402. is Yahweh,

  1403. the covenant

  1404. keeping God

  1405. who takes us

  1406. as his own.

  1407. He is not

  1408. just a God,

  1409. but he is

  1410. El Shaddai.

  1411. He is

  1412. Elohim.

  1413. He is the

  1414. living and

  1415. the true God.

  1416. In Thomas'

  1417. eyes,

  1418. Jesus is

  1419. nothing but

  1420. the most

  1421. supreme God

  1422. because he

  1423. has seen,

  1424. because he

  1425. has understood.

  1426. and that's

  1427. what Thomas

  1428. wants us to

  1429. understand as

  1430. well, and

  1431. what John

  1432. wants us to

  1433. understand.

  1434. Jesus said

  1435. to him,

  1436. have you

  1437. believed because

  1438. you have

  1439. seen me?

  1440. Blessed are

  1441. those who

  1442. have not

  1443. seen and

  1444. yet have

  1445. believed.

  1446. The questions

  1447. of Thomas'

  1448. mind were

  1449. satisfied by

  1450. Jesus'

  1451. resurrection.

  1452. What about

  1453. us as

  1454. those who

  1455. read John's

  1456. letter,

  1457. John's

  1458. gospel?

  1459. What about

  1460. us who

  1461. have not

  1462. seen and

  1463. yet have

  1464. believed?

  1465. Some of

  1466. you may

  1467. share Mary's

  1468. concerns.

  1469. You may

  1470. feel like

  1471. there's

  1472. brokenness in

  1473. my life,

  1474. and the

  1475. Lord put

  1476. those things

  1477. together.

  1478. Is he

  1479. really raised

  1480. from the

  1481. dead?

  1482. Is he

  1483. really the

  1484. Lord who

  1485. is able

  1486. from heaven

  1487. to help

  1488. me,

  1489. to continue

  1490. to care

  1491. for me?

  1492. Or did

  1493. he die

  1494. and just

  1495. leave behind

  1496. ideas?

  1497. behind.

  1498. We need

  1499. to be

  1500. satisfied like

  1501. Mary that

  1502. he is the

  1503. one who,

  1504. even from

  1505. heaven,

  1506. is bringing

  1507. personal

  1508. healing to

  1509. us.

  1510. Some of

  1511. us may

  1512. be more

  1513. like

  1514. Thomas.

  1515. We may

  1516. have

  1517. questions.

  1518. We want

  1519. answers to

  1520. those questions.

  1521. We don't

  1522. want to

  1523. believe easily.

  1524. We don't

  1525. want to

  1526. believe just

  1527. because we

  1528. try hard to

  1529. believe.

  1530. We want

  1531. to be

  1532. convinced

  1533. of what

  1534. Jesus has

  1535. taught us,

  1536. the reality

  1537. of his

  1538. resurrection,

  1539. and know

  1540. that it's

  1541. true.

  1542. And Thomas

  1543. helps us

  1544. to have

  1545. that kind

  1546. of affirmation

  1547. that Jesus

  1548. is who he

  1549. claims,

  1550. that he

  1551. is alive,

  1552. that he

  1553. is Lord,

  1554. that he

  1555. is God.

  1556. For Thomas,

  1557. like the

  1558. other disciples,

  1559. it wasn't a

  1560. scam that they

  1561. somehow managed

  1562. to pull off.

  1563. It was

  1564. something they

  1565. all stuck to

  1566. to their

  1567. deaths.

  1568. Tradition

  1569. tells us

  1570. that Thomas

  1571. took this

  1572. message all

  1573. the way to

  1574. southern India.

  1575. That's how

  1576. committed he

  1577. was to what

  1578. he saw,

  1579. and what he

  1580. touched,

  1581. and what he

  1582. believed.

  1583. We need to

  1584. be like

  1585. Mary and

  1586. to listen to

  1587. the voice of

  1588. Jesus.

  1589. Jesus said,

  1590. My sheep

  1591. hear my

  1592. voice,

  1593. they know

  1594. me and

  1595. they follow

  1596. me.

  1597. We need

  1598. to be like

  1599. Thomas,

  1600. and our

  1601. response needs

  1602. to be

  1603. worshiped.

  1604. Not,

  1605. yes,

  1606. I believe,

  1607. I can

  1608. certify

  1609. that these

  1610. things are

  1611. true,

  1612. but to

  1613. say,

  1614. my Lord

  1615. and my

  1616. God.

  1617. John

  1618. helps us

  1619. to understand

  1620. that it's

  1621. not just a

  1622. matter of

  1623. his writing

  1624. a credible

  1625. account,

  1626. it's a

  1627. matter of

  1628. the Spirit

  1629. working in

  1630. us as

  1631. well.

  1632. That we

  1633. might believe

  1634. that Jesus

  1635. is the

  1636. Christ,

  1637. the Son

  1638. of God,

  1639. and that by

  1640. believing you

  1641. may have

  1642. life in

  1643. his name.

  1644. It's not

  1645. just mental

  1646. things,

  1647. it's not

  1648. just believing

  1649. things are

  1650. true,

  1651. it's a

  1652. transformed

  1653. life,

  1654. a new

  1655. life.

  1656. And we

  1657. need to

  1658. do like

  1659. these

  1660. disciples

  1661. are doing,

  1662. like we're

  1663. doing tonight,

  1664. we need to

  1665. gather in

  1666. his name,

  1667. we need to

  1668. affirm to

  1669. each other

  1670. the truth,

  1671. we have

  1672. seen the

  1673. Lord,

  1674. this is

  1675. what he

  1676. has done,

  1677. this is

  1678. who he

  1679. is.

  1680. And we

  1681. need to

  1682. be like

  1683. Mary,

  1684. just saying

  1685. to other

  1686. people outside

  1687. of this

  1688. room,

  1689. we have

  1690. seen the

  1691. Lord,

  1692. and he

  1693. offers you

  1694. life in

  1695. his name.

  1696. Let's

  1697. pray.

  1698. Let's

  1699. pray.
