  1. Amen.

  2. And first 26 verses again.

  3. This story of the woman of Samaria.

  4. Before we look at this, let's turn to the Lord in prayer again.

  5. Let's pray.

  6. Our Father in heaven, we thank you for this, your holy word.

  7. And we ask you, trusting in Christ's merits and depending on your Holy Spirit's power,

  8. that our reading and hearing of your word this morning would be effectual to save and keep saving us.

  9. And so we ask for your help that we may listen diligently, readily and prayerfully.

  10. Help us to receive your word with faith and love.

  11. Lay it up in our hearts and practice it in our lives.

  12. To the glory of your great name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  13. Amen.

  14. Well, as we read this encounter of Jesus and this woman in Samaria,

  15. we are in a sense at the end of the first act of the good news story as John presents it to us.

  16. He has played the magnificent overture in the opening of chapter 1,

  17. where he's introduced us to the main character, which he starts by calling the Word.

  18. And he's also called it the light.

  19. And this is the light that does two things in this book.

  20. It's the light that is.

  21. The light who is creator.

  22. The light who is the light of all men.

  23. The light who is the reason for which and the means by which all people are created.

  24. The light for whom we all live.

  25. The light that makes itself known to all who are alive,

  26. however much they might try and deny it.

  27. The light that is.

  28. And he's the light that comes.

  29. Ever since darkness entered into the world,

  30. the light who is, as creator, has been coming as redeemer.

  31. The light that has been coming has been rejected by the darkness.

  32. Not received by his own, his own creation.

  33. But this light has kept coming.

  34. Until a great climactic day when this light came as the Word became flesh.

  35. And lived among us.

  36. Full of the glory of God.

  37. Jesus Christ, full of God's glory, came to be the tabernacle for God's people.

  38. The meeting point between God and man.

  39. And John has introduced us to another John.

  40. John the Baptist.

  41. Who introduced and prophesied the coming of this light into the world as a lamb.

  42. Who would take away the sins of the world and reconcile us to God.

  43. And as he did so, we see some of his disciples,

  44. those who understand what he's saying,

  45. transferring their discipleship to Jesus.

  46. At which point, John presents us the big event in this first act of the story,

  47. at a wedding in Cana.

  48. And Jesus gives the first of seven signs that we see in this book.

  49. A sign that would explain what he has come to do.

  50. And John has given a lot of teaching about what Jesus has come to do,

  51. since that scene.

  52. Mainly in conversations with various people along the way.

  53. Until we come to this final scene in the act.

  54. This is the final scene change.

  55. Before the end of this act.

  56. And what John gives us in this scene,

  57. on the one hand,

  58. summarises all that he's said about Jesus so far.

  59. But it also brings a new dimension to it.

  60. It helps us to see it in a new light.

  61. He literally takes us to a new place

  62. to get this new perspective.

  63. We even go beyond the Jewish territory into Samaria.

  64. We see the beginning of the chapter.

  65. And so here is the light arriving in a new place,

  66. which allows us to see

  67. what it looks like for the light to arrive somewhere new.

  68. What is it like when Jesus comes on the scene

  69. for the first time in someone's life?

  70. And to get us ready for this summary

  71. and for this fresh perspective,

  72. John rocks the boat a little bit.

  73. He makes us do a double take,

  74. which is what he's doing in verses 6 and 7.

  75. Imagine you're going on a journey

  76. with some friends

  77. and you take a break on the long drive

  78. and you stop in a pub or a restaurant.

  79. There's hardly anyone else in there

  80. except for one woman who's just sat at the bar.

  81. And while you're waiting for your food to arrive,

  82. one of your friends goes up to this woman at the bar

  83. and says,

  84. Do you come here often?

  85. You might understandably ask at that point,

  86. What on earth is he doing?

  87. Is he trying to chat her up or something

  88. while we're in the middle of a long drive?

  89. What is he doing?

  90. That is basically what some of the readers in John's day

  91. must have thought when they got to verse 7.

  92. You might not think that immediately,

  93. but it is a classic line that would make you think that.

  94. Here's a man who's gone to a well

  95. and he talks to a woman at that well

  96. and asks her for a drink.

  97. That is a classic, almost cliché,

  98. chat-up line in the ancient world.

  99. And you'll see that in the Old Testament.

  100. That is exactly how Abraham's servant

  101. found a wife for Isaac.

  102. Jacob too, who had actually given this well.

  103. Maybe it was even at this well that they met.

  104. He'd given this well to Samaria.

  105. That's exactly how he met Rachel.

  106. That's exactly how Moses met his wife.

  107. That if you'd watched a rom-com in those days

  108. where the man goes to talk to a woman at the well,

  109. you'd have complained about how unoriginal this story was.

  110. Could it possibly be that Jesus is doing the same thing here?

  111. Given everything that John has said about Jesus so far,

  112. it is a pretty surprising turn of events.

  113. On the one hand, John has spoken of Jesus as a bridegroom.

  114. That has been there.

  115. John the Baptist has called him a bridegroom.

  116. And he's even spoken about how he has no right to untie his sandal.

  117. The way Boaz did have the right to take the sandal of an unworthy redeemer.

  118. Jesus is the worthy bridegroom.

  119. And John has no right to take his place.

  120. He's the one who was the true master of the wedding feast at Cana.

  121. But he made it very clear then that this was not his time.

  122. This was not his hour.

  123. But the way John has spoken about him,

  124. even in calling him a bridegroom,

  125. he has made it sound like it's about something much greater

  126. than just finding him a woman to marry.

  127. So when we read Jesus saying,

  128. what is basically this classic Chesot line,

  129. it catches us off guard.

  130. You've got to wonder what on earth is going on.

  131. Have I missed something so far?

  132. Now you might be helped right in thinking about all the times

  133. that water has come up in John's gospel,

  134. and every time water has come up so far,

  135. it's never just about the water.

  136. So there might be something more going on.

  137. But you're still bound to ask,

  138. have I misunderstood what Jesus is looking for?

  139. Would you take me through this again, John?

  140. And that is exactly what he does.

  141. And if we're surprised, we're not alone,

  142. because the Samaritan woman was pretty surprised herself.

  143. Our surprise is based on everything we've known about her,

  144. about Jesus so far.

  145. Her surprise too was based on what she knew about him.

  146. Except all she knew about him was that he's a Jewish man.

  147. That's all she knows about him.

  148. And just as we're starting to ask ourselves questions,

  149. it's the woman who actually gets to ask the questions to Jesus himself.

  150. And so this woman is our guide, in a way,

  151. as we look for some answers from Jesus.

  152. And she's going to discover who Jesus is

  153. in four steps as we go along this conversation.

  154. The starting point for her, the first step,

  155. as far as she knows,

  156. is this man has nothing to do with me.

  157. This man has nothing to do with me.

  158. That's where she starts off.

  159. That's what she thinks.

  160. And she might understandably assume

  161. that the feeling is mutual.

  162. She would expect a Jewish man to think,

  163. this woman has nothing to do with me.

  164. A Samaritan woman.

  165. But here he is asking for a drink.

  166. And as she points out to him,

  167. how weird it is for him to speak to her.

  168. Verse 9,

  169. How is it that you, a Jew, Jewish man,

  170. ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?

  171. John points out how weird it is in verse 10.

  172. She's not wrong.

  173. Jews don't have dealings with Samaritans.

  174. Not to mention how strange it is for a man

  175. to be speaking to a woman out in public.

  176. And yet Jesus' answer is basically,

  177. it isn't weird in the slightest.

  178. Because if you knew what I have to offer,

  179. if you knew what the gift of God is

  180. that I am proposing to the world,

  181. you'd be asking me for what I have.

  182. So why wouldn't I ask you for what you have to offer?

  183. It's rather an intriguing answer, isn't it?

  184. So she takes the bait.

  185. As she does so, she discovers in verses 10 to 15,

  186. this man has something I'm interested in.

  187. That's the second step of her discovery.

  188. This man has something I'm interested in.

  189. The beginning, of course,

  190. she doesn't get what he's talking about.

  191. Have you got some bucket hidden away somewhere?

  192. Do you have some secret special well

  193. that I don't know of?

  194. Can you somehow do better

  195. than our great patriarch Jacob

  196. who gave us this well

  197. and drank at this well with his family?

  198. And Jesus basically says in verses 13 to 14,

  199. yes, I am greater than Jacob.

  200. I've got a far better well than this one.

  201. I've got a well that stops you from thirsting again.

  202. With this well,

  203. you'll have a well springing up inside of you

  204. to eternal life.

  205. And boy, is she interested.

  206. And not just because she's fed up

  207. of having to fetch water every day.

  208. Because look at what's going on here.

  209. She's fetching water at the sixth hour.

  210. That's that midday.

  211. That is not normal.

  212. Evening is when the women

  213. would usually come out to fetch water.

  214. This woman has chosen the least likely,

  215. least convenient time to fetch water.

  216. She comes in the blazing midday sun.

  217. Nobody else in their right mind

  218. would come at this time of day.

  219. And that's probably just the point.

  220. It's probably just what she wanted.

  221. She'd pick the time when she's least likely

  222. to bump into anyone else.

  223. This woman is alone.

  224. This woman is sad.

  225. And she's ashamed.

  226. And so she answers,

  227. Oh, sir, give me this water.

  228. So I will not be thirsty

  229. or have to come here to draw water.

  230. And at this point,

  231. when she's shown some of her colours,

  232. Jesus' response is to show her

  233. that he's a prophet.

  234. And so she comes to a third step

  235. in discovering

  236. who he is.

  237. She learns,

  238. This man knows me well.

  239. He knows all about me.

  240. Just as she asks for this water

  241. that would spare her from thirsting

  242. and having to make this painful daily trip

  243. to fetch water alone,

  244. Jesus, seemingly out of nowhere,

  245. says,

  246. Go get your husband.

  247. And she replies,

  248. But she has no husband.

  249. Now at this point,

  250. Jesus could keep on

  251. with the diagnostic questions,

  252. couldn't he?

  253. That's often what he does.

  254. And in these days,

  255. under the new covenant,

  256. singleness is a normal way to live.

  257. That's not a strange thing to say,

  258. I have no husband.

  259. End of conversation.

  260. But in this period here,

  261. to be a single woman

  262. was a strange thing.

  263. It meant you had no provision.

  264. It meant you were completely destitute.

  265. So for Jesus to ask her,

  266. and then to assume that she was married,

  267. would be a normal thing.

  268. And it would be a normal thing

  269. to ask,

  270. Well, how come?

  271. What's going on?

  272. Why didn't he ask for questions then?

  273. He doesn't do that.

  274. He takes this opportunity

  275. to show her

  276. that he knows what's going on.

  277. He reveals who he is

  278. and what he knows.

  279. Verse 17,

  280. You are right in saying,

  281. I have no husband.

  282. For you have had five husbands,

  283. and the one you now have

  284. is not your husband.

  285. Now we don't know

  286. whether she's been widowed five times,

  287. or divorced five times.

  288. And if they're divorces,

  289. we don't know whether

  290. the fault was hers

  291. or the husband's fault each time.

  292. Whatever happened here,

  293. we can see that she's been stigmatized.

  294. She's ashamed.

  295. There are bound to be

  296. rumours going around

  297. whether or not they were right.

  298. And she's in so much need

  299. that her best bet now

  300. was to accept a situation

  301. where she lives with a man

  302. who won't marry her.

  303. And in this painful situation here,

  304. here comes a man

  305. who reveals to her

  306. that he knows.

  307. He knows her.

  308. He knows what's happened to her.

  309. He knows what is happening to her.

  310. He knows where she is.

  311. Here is a prophet

  312. who knows her well.

  313. He knows all about her.

  314. And so in verse 19,

  315. she says,

  316. Sir, I perceive that you're a prophet.

  317. And you might think

  318. that many seem to do

  319. that what she says next

  320. is a sort of a diversion tactic.

  321. He's asking personal questions.

  322. But he's a prophet.

  323. He's into theology.

  324. So I'm not asking

  325. a theological question.

  326. And that will distract him

  327. for a while.

  328. But if we think that,

  329. and a lot of commentators do,

  330. I think that reveals

  331. more about us

  332. than about her.

  333. And it's especially

  334. recent commentators

  335. who do this.

  336. I think that reveals

  337. more about our attitudes

  338. than it does about her.

  339. because don't you think

  340. if she was trying to distract him

  341. with something irrelevant

  342. he'd been able to tell?

  343. Do you not think

  344. that he'd be able to spot it

  345. and bring it back

  346. to the heart of the matter

  347. if that is the heart

  348. of the matter?

  349. Of course he could.

  350. But he doesn't do that.

  351. This conversation

  352. is going the way

  353. Jesus wants it to go.

  354. On the one hand,

  355. yes,

  356. she does have these

  357. relational issues

  358. that need to be addressed.

  359. But what has Jesus done

  360. in revealing

  361. his prophetic knowledge

  362. of her situation

  363. rather than just

  364. asking questions?

  365. He hasn't just brought

  366. her situation

  367. into the conversation

  368. but he's brought up

  369. God

  370. and his knowledge

  371. of the situation

  372. into the conversation.

  373. When she says

  374. I perceive you're a prophet

  375. she's not saying

  376. wow, that was impressive

  377. or how do you know that?

  378. She knows

  379. at this point

  380. that in this man

  381. God has come

  382. to speak into her life.

  383. And so she shows

  384. that she knows

  385. deep down

  386. what she needs

  387. more than anything

  388. is reconciliation

  389. with God.

  390. But she belongs

  391. to a people in Samaria

  392. that has developed

  393. their own practices

  394. and beliefs.

  395. They only accept

  396. the first five books

  397. of the law

  398. for example

  399. not the rest

  400. of the Old Testament.

  401. They've set up

  402. an alternative

  403. centre of worship

  404. in Samaria

  405. a different mountain

  406. to worship on.

  407. They've always

  408. defied themselves

  409. by not belonging

  410. to the Jews.

  411. So that question

  412. is bound to hang

  413. over her head

  414. now isn't it?

  415. And would have done

  416. all her life

  417. who's right?

  418. Who really knows God?

  419. Can I be reconciled

  420. with God

  421. being a Samaritan

  422. if they're right?

  423. And here is one

  424. who clearly speaks

  425. as one sent

  426. by God

  427. who can speak

  428. to her

  429. even in the

  430. darkness of her life

  431. in her sin

  432. and suffering

  433. but it's a man

  434. of God

  435. speaking to her.

  436. And so in this

  437. fourth step

  438. she learns

  439. this man

  440. can sort out

  441. the most important

  442. question in my life.

  443. This man

  444. can sort out

  445. the most important

  446. question

  447. in my life.

  448. And the way

  449. she frames the issue

  450. is as an issue

  451. of mountains.

  452. Because that is

  453. the main question

  454. that has been

  455. hanging over

  456. these two rival

  457. societies for centuries.

  458. And she's not

  459. asking this question

  460. of which mountain

  461. should be used

  462. for worship

  463. as though it's

  464. just a bit of

  465. theological trivia.

  466. Just a bit of

  467. theory to just

  468. distract ourselves

  469. with.

  470. No, no,

  471. she's really

  472. wondering

  473. how can you

  474. a Jew

  475. ask me

  476. a Samaritan

  477. at the beginning

  478. and by now

  479. she's wondering

  480. how can you

  481. speak of God's

  482. gift to me

  483. as a Jewish

  484. prophet

  485. speaking on

  486. God's behalf

  487. as though

  488. this difference

  489. between Jew

  490. and Samaritan

  491. didn't matter.

  492. Of course it

  493. matters.

  494. We've got to

  495. get this question

  496. sorted.

  497. Maybe she's

  498. starting to wonder

  499. if God is

  500. speaking to me

  501. through a Jewish

  502. prophet

  503. have we been

  504. wrong all this

  505. time?

  506. Do I need

  507. to move?

  508. Do I need

  509. to leave

  510. all my family

  511. and all this

  512. community?

  513. Do I need

  514. to convert

  515. over there?

  516. Do I need

  517. to swallow

  518. my national

  519. prize and

  520. cross over

  521. to another

  522. mountain?

  523. Should all

  524. of us be

  525. over there?

  526. And the

  527. answer is

  528. on the one

  529. hand that

  530. God's dealings

  531. God's salvation

  532. yes does

  533. indeed come

  534. from the Jews.

  535. On the one

  536. hand yes you

  537. have been

  538. wrong.

  539. You've been

  540. worshipping

  541. what you don't

  542. know.

  543. But Jesus

  544. tells her

  545. that there's

  546. not only

  547. going to be

  548. a change

  549. in her

  550. own life

  551. story.

  552. It's not

  553. just about

  554. going to

  555. move to

  556. another

  557. mountain.

  558. There's

  559. going to be

  560. a shift

  561. in the

  562. story of

  563. the whole

  564. world.

  565. The idea

  566. of a temple

  567. on a

  568. mountain

  569. was only

  570. ever meant

  571. to be

  572. symbolic.

  573. It was

  574. only there

  575. as a

  576. temporary

  577. picture.

  578. God

  579. doesn't live

  580. in particular

  581. temples on

  582. particular

  583. mountains on

  584. earth.

  585. God is

  586. spirit.

  587. He doesn't

  588. have a

  589. body like

  590. man.

  591. He is

  592. spirit.

  593. And so

  594. he's

  595. worshipped in

  596. spirit and

  597. in truth.

  598. The day

  599. that the

  600. temple

  601. symbolized

  602. has come.

  603. It is

  604. coming.

  605. It has

  606. come.

  607. The

  608. worship of

  609. God can

  610. now be a

  611. global

  612. phenomenon.

  613. Worship

  614. will no

  615. longer be

  616. in sketches

  617. and copies

  618. as this

  619. temple in

  620. Jerusalem is.

  621. even a

  622. bad

  623. sketch or

  624. copy in

  625. Samaria.

  626. The real

  627. thing, real

  628. living,

  629. fellowship

  630. with God

  631. is now a

  632. worldwide

  633. reality.

  634. As people

  635. from every

  636. tribe, every

  637. tongue, every

  638. nation come

  639. to the

  640. heavenly

  641. Mount Zion,

  642. the heavenly

  643. temple that

  644. he has

  645. established.

  646. Just as

  647. we've done

  648. today in

  649. gathering.

  650. That is

  651. where we

  652. have come.

  653. It's a

  654. reality that

  655. he himself

  656. has come

  657. to bring

  658. in.

  659. Not just

  660. tell us

  661. about, but

  662. he's come

  663. to bring

  664. it.

  665. That's

  666. not something

  667. she grasped

  668. straight away

  669. and so

  670. she says,

  671. well, we'll

  672. at least have

  673. certainty when

  674. Messiah comes.

  675. And so we

  676. come to this

  677. great climax

  678. of the

  679. conversation in

  680. verse 26.

  681. I who speak

  682. to you am

  683. he.

  684. The word

  685. order in

  686. English does

  687. make it

  688. obvious, but

  689. this is the

  690. first time in

  691. John's

  692. gospel that

  693. he uses

  694. that phrase

  695. I am.

  696. I myself

  697. am.

  698. There are

  699. seven times

  700. in this book

  701. where he says

  702. I am

  703. something.

  704. I am

  705. the good

  706. shepherd,

  707. I am

  708. the way,

  709. the truth

  710. and life,

  711. I am

  712. the bread

  713. of life.

  714. And there are

  715. seven times

  716. when he just

  717. says I am

  718. or I

  719. myself am.

  720. Echoing God's

  721. language of I

  722. am who I

  723. am in the

  724. Old Testament.

  725. And here's the

  726. first, I

  727. myself am

  728. the one

  729. speaking to

  730. you.

  731. And so here

  732. she fully

  733. learns.

  734. this man

  735. doesn't just

  736. answer the

  737. biggest question

  738. in her

  739. life, but

  740. fully resolves

  741. it, fully

  742. sorts it

  743. out.

  744. Because he

  745. doesn't just

  746. answer the

  747. question, he

  748. shows himself

  749. to be God

  750. himself, seeking

  751. that reconciliation

  752. with his

  753. people.

  754. And so it

  755. turns out he

  756. has come for

  757. her after all.

  758. Suddenly we

  759. see a whole

  760. new layer of

  761. meaning to

  762. verse 4.

  763. He had to

  764. go to

  765. Samaria.

  766. Now it's not

  767. just geographical

  768. detail.

  769. It is

  770. geographical

  771. detail, he

  772. did have to

  773. pass through

  774. Samaria.

  775. But Jesus

  776. had to go

  777. to Samaria

  778. for her.

  779. And if you

  780. use John's

  781. writing, you

  782. realise there

  783. was a point

  784. to his

  785. telling us

  786. the time.

  787. Not just

  788. telling us that

  789. it's the middle

  790. of the day,

  791. it's the sixth

  792. hour.

  793. And he

  794. came to

  795. a woman who

  796. had had

  797. six men

  798. in her

  799. life.

  800. And we've

  801. seen the

  802. number six

  803. before in

  804. John's

  805. Gospel, and

  806. it always

  807. suggests something

  808. is incomplete

  809. here.

  810. And here

  811. is Jesus

  812. Christ saying,

  813. I have

  814. come at

  815. this sixth

  816. hour to

  817. be your

  818. seventh and

  819. last man.

  820. The only

  821. man that

  822. you will

  823. ever truly

  824. deeply

  825. need.

  826. But more

  827. than that,

  828. this is the

  829. time when

  830. worship has

  831. been focused

  832. on a single

  833. mountain,

  834. whichever

  835. mountain it

  836. is, that

  837. was the

  838. incomplete

  839. time.

  840. I've

  841. come in to

  842. bring in

  843. the completion,

  844. the perfection

  845. of worship.

  846. The time when

  847. God is

  848. worshipped in

  849. spirit and in

  850. truth.

  851. He was

  852. seeking a

  853. bride.

  854. But it

  855. wasn't just

  856. about this

  857. woman.

  858. Although it

  859. is through

  860. her that we

  861. learn about

  862. his seeking

  863. for a

  864. bride.

  865. Through her

  866. we learn

  867. that God

  868. is seeking

  869. worshippers to

  870. glorify and

  871. enjoy him

  872. forever, all

  873. over the

  874. world.

  875. This body

  876. of worshippers

  877. is his

  878. son's bride

  879. that he

  880. has come

  881. to seek.

  882. So what do

  883. we learn from

  884. this encounter

  885. with the

  886. woman of

  887. Samaria?

  888. Well just

  889. like this

  890. Samaritan

  891. woman, we

  892. learn that

  893. while we

  894. may think

  895. that Jesus

  896. is someone

  897. who has

  898. nothing to

  899. do with

  900. us, or

  901. mainly

  902. someone who

  903. has something

  904. we're interested

  905. in, Jesus

  906. is the one

  907. who knows

  908. us better

  909. than we

  910. know

  911. ourselves, and

  912. has come to

  913. sort out the

  914. most important

  915. question in

  916. our lives, the

  917. problem of

  918. worship.

  919. That's

  920. essentially what

  921. it means every

  922. time you see

  923. the mention of

  924. the word

  925. covenant in

  926. the Bible,

  927. the God who

  928. made you has

  929. stooped down

  930. to you even

  931. in your rebellion

  932. against him, to

  933. establish a

  934. deep loving

  935. friendship with

  936. you forever.

  937. This is what

  938. the light coming

  939. into the world

  940. has all been

  941. about.

  942. From that

  943. first day of

  944. Adam's sin

  945. in the garden,

  946. he promised to

  947. kill that serpent

  948. and win at

  949. our friendship,

  950. from our

  951. friendship with

  952. evil to

  953. friendship with

  954. God, to

  955. worshipping

  956. God.

  957. And as he

  958. came to

  959. Abraham and

  960. to Isaac and

  961. to Jacob and

  962. he came to

  963. Moses and

  964. he came to

  965. David and

  966. to the

  967. prophets, what's

  968. he doing?

  969. He's seeking

  970. worshippers.

  971. He's preparing

  972. a bride for

  973. his son.

  974. And as

  975. Jesus came,

  976. became flesh,

  977. went to the

  978. cross to

  979. save his

  980. people, as

  981. he rose up

  982. and sent his

  983. apostles to

  984. make disciples

  985. in all nations,

  986. what was he

  987. doing?

  988. Seeking

  989. worshippers

  990. and preparing

  991. his bride.

  992. We can so

  993. often think that

  994. Jesus doesn't

  995. really have

  996. anything to

  997. do with

  998. me.

  999. Unless I

  1000. ask him to,

  1001. that is.

  1002. So Jesus

  1003. might be for

  1004. you, but

  1005. he's not for

  1006. me.

  1007. I don't

  1008. need to

  1009. bring Jesus

  1010. into the

  1011. picture.

  1012. I'm doing

  1013. just fine,

  1014. thank you

  1015. very much.

  1016. Or maybe

  1017. he's got

  1018. something I'm

  1019. interested in,

  1020. sort of

  1021. useful, I

  1022. guess.

  1023. Maybe I

  1024. could give

  1025. it a go.

  1026. And yet

  1027. here he

  1028. comes as

  1029. one who

  1030. knows us

  1031. inside and

  1032. out,

  1033. saying he

  1034. has come to

  1035. sort us out,

  1036. sort out the

  1037. most important

  1038. question in

  1039. our life,

  1040. to provide

  1041. for the

  1042. biggest need

  1043. in our

  1044. lives.

  1045. Now when

  1046. he came

  1047. here this

  1048. morning,

  1049. you probably

  1050. expected to

  1051. hear something

  1052. about Jesus,

  1053. but maybe

  1054. you're thinking,

  1055. I didn't come

  1056. here to have

  1057. Jesus barge

  1058. into my

  1059. life like

  1060. this.

  1061. Who is

  1062. Jesus to

  1063. make demands

  1064. of me?

  1065. I didn't

  1066. sign up for

  1067. him to know

  1068. everything about

  1069. me like this.

  1070. Can I opt

  1071. out?

  1072. Who is he to

  1073. tell me what

  1074. I need?

  1075. I was

  1076. asked recently

  1077. back in

  1078. Paris,

  1079. does he

  1080. really know

  1081. everyone?

  1082. What about

  1083. people who

  1084. don't want

  1085. him in

  1086. their lives?

  1087. What about

  1088. people who

  1089. don't necessarily

  1090. believe in

  1091. God?

  1092. What will

  1093. happen to

  1094. them if

  1095. they don't

  1096. believe in

  1097. God,

  1098. but they've

  1099. never really

  1100. done anything

  1101. awful?

  1102. What if at

  1103. the end they

  1104. discovered God

  1105. was real all

  1106. along,

  1107. but they weren't

  1108. really that bad?

  1109. Is that enough

  1110. just to get

  1111. them in?

  1112. Well the

  1113. only answer

  1114. to that is

  1115. what if I

  1116. came to

  1117. your house

  1118. and settled

  1119. in and

  1120. squatted and

  1121. treated it

  1122. like my own

  1123. home and

  1124. used your

  1125. food and

  1126. water and

  1127. utilities and

  1128. completely ignored

  1129. you and

  1130. anyone else

  1131. who lived

  1132. there and

  1133. any rules or

  1134. practices you

  1135. might have

  1136. there?

  1137. Is it

  1138. enough for

  1139. me to

  1140. not do

  1141. anything

  1142. seriously

  1143. bad?

  1144. Or isn't

  1145. that just a

  1146. terrible thing

  1147. for me to

  1148. do in

  1149. itself?

  1150. And if you

  1151. simply see the

  1152. way I'm

  1153. behaving and

  1154. living in

  1155. your house,

  1156. is that

  1157. snooping or

  1158. is that just

  1159. you simply

  1160. observing what

  1161. I'm doing as

  1162. I go about

  1163. in your

  1164. house?

  1165. This is

  1166. God's world.

  1167. He made

  1168. it.

  1169. The very

  1170. fact that we're

  1171. alive screams

  1172. to every person

  1173. each day that

  1174. we owe

  1175. everything to

  1176. him.

  1177. The existence

  1178. of every human

  1179. life is a

  1180. light trying to

  1181. break through

  1182. this darkness

  1183. that we keep

  1184. creating to

  1185. try and smother

  1186. it.

  1187. And Jesus

  1188. is that

  1189. light, that

  1190. life, that

  1191. creating and

  1192. redeeming light,

  1193. the word of

  1194. God literally

  1195. in the flesh.

  1196. And he's

  1197. come seeking

  1198. his bride,

  1199. seeking

  1200. worshippers

  1201. for his

  1202. father,

  1203. seeking to

  1204. make us

  1205. to be what

  1206. he made

  1207. us to be

  1208. in the

  1209. first place.

  1210. If you

  1211. think I'm

  1212. only talking

  1213. at this

  1214. point to

  1215. people who

  1216. aren't

  1217. professing

  1218. Christians,

  1219. not, let's

  1220. be honest,

  1221. it is

  1222. frighteningly

  1223. easy for

  1224. all of us

  1225. to forget

  1226. about Jesus,

  1227. think that

  1228. there are

  1229. maybe at

  1230. least parts

  1231. of my life

  1232. where I can

  1233. decide how

  1234. much of a

  1235. say Jesus

  1236. gets to

  1237. have in

  1238. that part

  1239. of my

  1240. life.

  1241. It is

  1242. painfully

  1243. easy to be a

  1244. practical

  1245. atheist,

  1246. isn't it?

  1247. And how

  1248. easy it is

  1249. for us

  1250. just to

  1251. think of

  1252. him as

  1253. one who

  1254. has

  1255. something

  1256. I'm

  1257. interested

  1258. in.

  1259. Be that

  1260. inner peace

  1261. or friends,

  1262. clear conscience,

  1263. a bit of a

  1264. fire insurance

  1265. policy.

  1266. Even if I

  1267. just go to

  1268. him to get

  1269. forgiveness of

  1270. sin,

  1271. that's just

  1272. about ticking

  1273. a box and

  1274. getting me

  1275. into heaven,

  1276. but I'm not

  1277. really concerned

  1278. about him

  1279. being there.

  1280. it's just

  1281. about what

  1282. I want,

  1283. me and

  1284. my wants.

  1285. You must

  1286. realise that

  1287. here is a

  1288. man who

  1289. knows you

  1290. inside out.

  1291. Here is a

  1292. man who

  1293. knows your

  1294. needs much

  1295. better,

  1296. much more

  1297. deeply than

  1298. you think.

  1299. You must

  1300. realise that

  1301. he knows

  1302. your greatest

  1303. problem is

  1304. your relationship

  1305. with God.

  1306. Your greatest

  1307. need is

  1308. reconciliation

  1309. with God,

  1310. to be brought

  1311. back to

  1312. him.

  1313. He knows

  1314. to have

  1315. communion,

  1316. friendship with

  1317. God is

  1318. literally what

  1319. you were made

  1320. for,

  1321. and he should

  1322. know it's

  1323. what you were

  1324. made for,

  1325. because it

  1326. was his

  1327. reason for

  1328. making you.

  1329. Not only

  1330. does he know

  1331. that,

  1332. he has come

  1333. to make that

  1334. a reality

  1335. himself,

  1336. where we so

  1337. miserably have

  1338. failed.

  1339. He is the

  1340. one who came

  1341. to seek

  1342. worshippers

  1343. for his

  1344. father,

  1345. come to

  1346. seek his

  1347. dear bride.

  1348. He is the

  1349. one who came

  1350. to provide

  1351. this living

  1352. water that

  1353. never leaves

  1354. us thirsty.

  1355. He is the

  1356. one who came

  1357. to put living

  1358. springs inside

  1359. us to give

  1360. us eternal

  1361. life.

  1362. But of

  1363. course that

  1364. was at the

  1365. cost of

  1366. his own

  1367. thirst.

  1368. As he would

  1369. say,

  1370. hanging on

  1371. that cross,

  1372. I thirst.

  1373. It was at

  1374. the cost of

  1375. his life.

  1376. He came to

  1377. love his

  1378. bride and

  1379. lay his

  1380. life down

  1381. for her.

  1382. He came

  1383. to do

  1384. all that

  1385. was needed

  1386. to reconcile

  1387. us to

  1388. God.

  1389. When the

  1390. father raised

  1391. him to

  1392. life by

  1393. the spirit,

  1394. he gave

  1395. him the

  1396. holy spirit.

  1397. He is

  1398. now the

  1399. life-giving

  1400. spirit.

  1401. He is the

  1402. great well,

  1403. the source

  1404. of our

  1405. life.

  1406. Not just

  1407. in the sense

  1408. that everyone

  1409. is alive,

  1410. but the

  1411. source of

  1412. our spiritual,

  1413. eternal,

  1414. resurrection,

  1415. life.

  1416. friends,

  1417. if you're

  1418. still mainly

  1419. feeling miffed

  1420. at the idea

  1421. of Jesus

  1422. making all

  1423. these claims

  1424. on your

  1425. life,

  1426. and ignoring

  1427. the infinite

  1428. blessing he

  1429. has come to

  1430. be for you,

  1431. there will

  1432. be a day

  1433. when you

  1434. will regret

  1435. resisting him.

  1436. You'll

  1437. regret not

  1438. acknowledging him

  1439. as your

  1440. maker.

  1441. And sadly

  1442. that day

  1443. could be too

  1444. late.

  1445. But I

  1446. assure you,

  1447. I promise

  1448. you in

  1449. God's name,

  1450. acknowledging

  1451. Jesus Christ

  1452. as your

  1453. Lord and

  1454. Saviour,

  1455. will never

  1456. be something

  1457. you regret.

  1458. It doesn't

  1459. mean your

  1460. life will

  1461. be easy.

  1462. People all

  1463. around the

  1464. world suffer

  1465. for Jesus

  1466. every day,

  1467. but they

  1468. suffer an

  1469. even face

  1470. death knowing

  1471. that it's

  1472. completely

  1473. worth it.

  1474. Because he

  1475. has come to

  1476. sort out the

  1477. biggest problem

  1478. in their

  1479. lives.

  1480. And he's

  1481. come to do

  1482. the same

  1483. for you.

  1484. He has

  1485. come to

  1486. bring you

  1487. back to a

  1488. loving friendship

  1489. with God,

  1490. forever.

  1491. Let me

  1492. urge you

  1493. then,

  1494. in Christ's

  1495. name,

  1496. simply to

  1497. ask him

  1498. for that

  1499. living water.

  1500. Come to

  1501. him.

  1502. Come to

  1503. him not

  1504. as someone

  1505. you'd like

  1506. to let

  1507. in,

  1508. as though

  1509. it's for

  1510. you to

  1511. say,

  1512. but as

  1513. your God,

  1514. the one

  1515. who made

  1516. you.

  1517. Come to

  1518. him.

  1519. Come to

  1520. him not

  1521. as someone

  1522. whom you

  1523. can use,

  1524. but as

  1525. your God

  1526. and bridegroom

  1527. come to be

  1528. reconciled

  1529. with you.

  1530. Come to

  1531. enable you

  1532. to glorify

  1533. and enjoy

  1534. your God

  1535. forever.

  1536. Come to

  1537. him as

  1538. the one

  1539. who will

  1540. give you

  1541. eternal

  1542. life.

  1543. And what

  1544. is eternal

  1545. life according

  1546. to Jesus?

  1547. It's not just

  1548. living forever.

  1549. In John 17

  1550. he tells us

  1551. eternal life

  1552. is to

  1553. know God

  1554. and Jesus

  1555. Christ whom

  1556. he has

  1557. sent.

  1558. Have communion

  1559. with him.

  1560. Come to

  1561. him with

  1562. these brothers

  1563. and sisters

  1564. that you

  1565. see around

  1566. you.

  1567. And help

  1568. others to

  1569. come with

  1570. you to

  1571. him.

  1572. Come to

  1573. him no

  1574. matter what

  1575. your past

  1576. has been,

  1577. no matter

  1578. what your

  1579. future holds.

  1580. Come to

  1581. him each

  1582. day.

  1583. He will

  1584. not reject

  1585. you.

  1586. He won't

  1587. be like

  1588. this woman's

  1589. six man

  1590. who can

  1591. live here

  1592. but I'm

  1593. not going

  1594. to marry

  1595. you.

  1596. He has

  1597. come for

  1598. you.

  1599. Come to

  1600. him.

  1601. You might

  1602. be asking

  1603. what do

  1604. you mean

  1605. come to

  1606. him?

  1607. Where?

  1608. As man

  1609. he is in

  1610. that heavenly

  1611. temple

  1612. where we

  1613. have come

  1614. by faith

  1615. together this

  1616. morning.

  1617. As God

  1618. he is

  1619. spirit he

  1620. is everywhere.

  1621. Coming to

  1622. him simply

  1623. means to

  1624. believe in

  1625. him, to

  1626. trust in

  1627. him fully.

  1628. Ask him

  1629. in prayer

  1630. for what

  1631. he is

  1632. offering you.

  1633. It means

  1634. stop resisting

  1635. him.

  1636. Stop

  1637. rejecting

  1638. him.

  1639. Maybe

  1640. you are

  1641. thinking

  1642. well

  1643. rejecting

  1644. him,

  1645. disobeying

  1646. him,

  1647. even

  1648. just in

  1649. this one

  1650. part of

  1651. my life

  1652. has sort

  1653. of become

  1654. my thing

  1655. now.

  1656. I'm

  1657. sort of a

  1658. bit in

  1659. too deep.

  1660. It's

  1661. sort of

  1662. stuck in

  1663. a pattern

  1664. now.

  1665. And this

  1666. woman may

  1667. have felt

  1668. the same

  1669. thing,

  1670. especially

  1671. if all

  1672. her failed

  1673. marriages

  1674. were her

  1675. fault.

  1676. Jesus

  1677. is saying

  1678. no you

  1679. haven't,

  1680. it's not

  1681. too late,

  1682. come on,

  1683. come and

  1684. drink.

  1685. I want

  1686. to give

  1687. you a

  1688. new life

  1689. of love

  1690. and worship,

  1691. come to

  1692. me.

  1693. So let's

  1694. go to him

  1695. now in

  1696. prayer,

  1697. let's pray.

  1698. Amen.
