  1. Has anyone tried booking a holiday with lastminute.com ever?

  2. ! Anybody do that? And did it work? Did you get a holiday? Did you get there?

  3. ! It's possible to leave things to the last minute, isn't it, including holidays.

  4. And, as we'll see, more important things as well.

  5. As Paul said, Sue and I went down to Devon and looked after a church there for about five years.

  6. And the first person who was saved, the first person who became a Christian there,

  7. because our church secretary befriended him and explained the gospel about Jesus to him,

  8. was a man called Norman.

  9. Six weeks later, Norman died in St. Vincent's Nursing Home in Plymouth.

  10. And this guy, Norman, had had a reputation for being rather a nasty, selfish piece of work.

  11. And he died after six weeks, having become a Christian.

  12. And I was asked to take his funeral, and as is normal, when you take a funeral,

  13. you go around and you talk to the family beforehand.

  14. And I was quite surprised, or I shouldn't have been, and I was amazed to hear about how his family said

  15. this man, Norman, had changed utterly in the last six weeks of his life, and changed for the better.

  16. Lastminute.com, or what?

  17. In particular, his attitude, and that's a key word for this morning,

  18. his attitude to the death of the Lord Jesus Christ had changed.

  19. His attitude to Jesus totally had changed.

  20. But particularly to Jesus' death on the cross.

  21. Why else would a previously irreligious and ungodly man choose a hymn for his own funeral

  22. with the words,

  23. I love that old cross,

  24. where the dearest and best

  25. for a world of lost sinners

  26. was slain.

  27. And I believe that it was because Norman

  28. had met

  29. the Lord Jesus Christ

  30. right at the very end of his life,

  31. and that's rather like what happened

  32. to one of the thieves, the criminals,

  33. who died with the Lord Jesus

  34. on the cross

  35. in Luke chapter 23,

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  36. on page 884

  37. of your pew Bibles,

  38. your chair Bibles,

  39. your church Bibles.

  40. Do keep that passage open,

  41. we're going to look at

  42. what happened.

  43. I mentioned earlier about how

  44. Norman's attitude to Jesus

  45. had changed.

  46. And as Jesus was dying on the cross,

  47. having been crucified there,

  48. in verse 32 and verse 33

  49. of our passage,

  50. Luke chapter 23,

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  51. there were lots of different attitudes

  52. to Jesus.

  53. And some of those attitudes

  54. were dire,

  55. they were really awful

  56. attitudes to Jesus.

  57. So let's look at what was going on,

  58. and compare their attitudes to him,

  59. with his own attitude

  60. to them,

  61. as well,

  62. indeed to us.

  63. Let's look at some careless

  64. attitudes

  65. to the Lord Jesus

  66. in verses 32 to 39.

  67. So there were all these attitudes around.

  68. In verse 32,

  69. we discover that there were

  70. two other men,

  71. both of them criminals,

  72. who were also

  73. led out

  74. with Jesus

  75. to be

  76. crucified.

  77. And they came to this place

  78. called

  79. the skull,

  80. and they crucified

  81. all three of them there.

  82. So it's Jesus

  83. with the criminals,

  84. traditionally known as

  85. the two thieves,

  86. of course.

  87. There was Jesus crucified

  88. on a cross in the middle,

  89. and on his left

  90. and on his right

  91. were two

  92. actual

  93. criminals,

  94. traditionally known

  95. as thieves.

  96. And whereas Jesus

  97. in verse 34

  98. says,

  99. Father,

  100. forgive them,

  101. for they do not know

  102. what they're doing,

  103. he's actually praying

  104. God's blessing

  105. on those Roman soldiers

  106. who were actually

  107. at that point in time

  108. crucifying

  109. Jesus Christ,

  110. the Son of God.

  111. That was Jesus'

  112. attitude to them.

  113. What was their

  114. attitude to Jesus?

  115. Well,

  116. if you carry on

  117. reading in verse 34,

  118. you discover that

  119. they divided up

  120. his clothes

  121. by casting

  122. lots.

  123. In other words,

  124. they cared more

  125. about Jesus'

  126. clothes

  127. than they did

  128. about Jesus.

  129. Now,

  130. that has got to be

  131. a fairly

  132. disgusting attitude

  133. to the Lord Jesus,

  134. hasn't it?

  135. By any standards.

  136. Contrast that

  137. with Jesus'

  138. attitude to them,

  139. to the Roman soldiers.

  140. Mercy,

  141. kindness,

  142. and forgiveness

  143. as he prays,

  144. Father,

  145. forgive them.

  146. That's amazing,

  147. isn't it?

  148. Then,

  149. in verse 35,

  150. we see that there

  151. were people

  152. standing there

  153. watching Jesus

  154. dying on the cross.

  155. And the Jewish

  156. rulers were there

  157. and they sneered

  158. at Jesus

  159. and they said,

  160. he saved others.

  161. Ha, ha, ha.

  162. They were mocking,

  163. you see.

  164. Let him save

  165. himself.

  166. If he could save

  167. others,

  168. let him save himself.

  169. They thought that had

  170. quite a pleasant

  171. symmetry to it.

  172. They thought they were

  173. being a little bit

  174. clever there,

  175. you know.

  176. They were mocking him.

  177. If he saved others,

  178. let him save himself.

  179. If he is God's Messiah,

  180. the chosen one.

  181. And those Jewish

  182. scribes and

  183. Pharisees were sure

  184. that if Jesus

  185. was now dying,

  186. he could not

  187. possibly be

  188. God's Messiah.

  189. What kind of

  190. Messiah would end

  191. his life in such

  192. ugly failure

  193. according to them.

  194. And it's interesting

  195. that the Greek word

  196. for saved,

  197. as in he saved

  198. others,

  199. is the same

  200. as the one

  201. that's used for

  202. healed as well.

  203. So presumably

  204. they knew about

  205. Jesus' healing

  206. miracles.

  207. So when they say

  208. he saved others,

  209. they probably mean

  210. he healed others.

  211. Let him save

  212. himself,

  213. you see.

  214. So they thought

  215. they were being

  216. clever.

  217. They even knew

  218. Greek.

  219. They did,

  220. of course.

  221. And then there

  222. were the soldiers

  223. in verse 36.

  224. They came up

  225. to Jesus

  226. and mocked him.

  227. Everybody seems

  228. to want to mock

  229. Jesus as he

  230. dies on the cross.

  231. They offer him

  232. some wine vinegar,

  233. which was probably

  234. bitter or sour

  235. or gone off

  236. as part of the

  237. mockery.

  238. And they said

  239. the same sort of

  240. thing.

  241. If you are the

  242. king of the Jews,

  243. like the sign

  244. over your head

  245. says,

  246. the king of the

  247. Jews,

  248. if you are the

  249. king of the Jews,

  250. save yourself.

  251. The same sort

  252. of mockery.

  253. And you know,

  254. Jesus could have

  255. saved himself.

  256. Have a look on

  257. your handout

  258. at the quotation

  259. there from

  260. Matthew 26,

    Matthew 26:53

  261. verse 53.

  262. Matthew records

  263. that Jesus says,

  264. do you think

  265. I cannot call

  266. on my father

  267. and he will

  268. at once put

  269. at my disposal

  270. more than

  271. twelve legion

  272. of angels?

  273. Jesus could

  274. have saved

  275. himself.

  276. He could have

  277. asked angels

  278. to do it for him,

  279. couldn't he,

  280. in fact.

  281. But Jesus

  282. goes on

  283. and he says,

  284. but how then

  285. would the

  286. scriptures

  287. be fulfilled?

  288. It had to

  289. happen

  290. in this

  291. way.

  292. In other

  293. words,

  294. Jesus

  295. had

  296. to die

  297. for God's

  298. plan of

  299. salvation

  300. to work.

  301. And then we

  302. get to the

  303. criminals that I

  304. mentioned,

  305. the traditional

  306. thieves who

  307. were there on

  308. Jesus'

  309. left and

  310. right.

  311. One of them,

  312. let's say it's

  313. the one on

  314. the left,

  315. in verse 39.

  316. One of those

  317. criminals who

  318. hung their

  319. whole insults

  320. at him,

  321. railed at him,

  322. it says in

  323. your church

  324. Bibles.

  325. Aren't you the

  326. Messiah?

  327. And then he

  328. comes up with

  329. the same thing

  330. as the others

  331. who have

  332. insulted Jesus.

  333. Save yourself

  334. and us.

  335. Now that's

  336. slightly different,

  337. isn't it?

  338. Save yourself,

  339. Jesus,

  340. and us.

  341. And the

  342. and is

  343. important there,

  344. you know,

  345. because that

  346. was the one

  347. thing that

  348. Jesus could

  349. not do.

  350. He could

  351. not both

  352. save himself

  353. and other

  354. people.

  355. And this

  356. is very

  357. important.

  358. You see,

  359. he could

  360. turn water

  361. into wine.

  362. He could

  363. calm storms.

  364. He could

  365. feed 5,000

  366. people just

  367. like that.

  368. He could

  369. raise Lazarus

  370. from the

  371. dead.

  372. He could

  373. heal thousands

  374. of people,

  375. but he

  376. could not

  377. save himself

  378. and other

  379. people.

  380. You see,

  381. Jesus had

  382. to stay

  383. on that

  384. cross and

  385. die so

  386. that you

  387. and me

  388. and many

  389. others can

  390. escape hell

  391. so that we

  392. can be saved.

  393. Jesus had

  394. to be

  395. unsaved,

  396. didn't he?

  397. saved.

  398. And we

  399. must not

  400. be like

  401. the soldiers

  402. or the

  403. Jewish leaders

  404. or any

  405. of the

  406. other

  407. mockers.

  408. You must

  409. not be

  410. like that

  411. because you

  412. understand

  413. now,

  414. if you

  415. didn't

  416. understand

  417. before,

  418. why Jesus

  419. had to

  420. die and

  421. why he

  422. could not

  423. have been

  424. saved.

  425. He could

  426. not save

  427. himself

  428. so that

  429. you

  430. can be

  431. saved.

  432. you

  433. perhaps

  434. heard that

  435. people say

  436. that the

  437. single event

  438. that defined

  439. the 20th

  440. century was

  441. the

  442. Holocaust

  443. when

  444. something like

  445. 7 million

  446. people died

  447. seemingly

  448. pointlessly.

  449. Well,

  450. you know,

  451. the event

  452. that defined

  453. not just

  454. the 20th

  455. century,

  456. the event

  457. that defined

  458. the whole

  459. of time

  460. and indeed

  461. all of

  462. eternity,

  463. that event

  464. is Jesus

  465. dying on

  466. the cross

  467. to save

  468. others.

  469. And we

  470. must make

  471. sure that

  472. we do

  473. not have

  474. a mocking

  475. wrong

  476. or even

  477. just a

  478. careless

  479. attitude

  480. to Jesus

  481. dying on

  482. the cross.

  483. So we've

  484. looked at

  485. some careless

  486. attitudes

  487. to Jesus

  488. and careless

  489. attitudes

  490. to him

  491. dying on

  492. the cross,

  493. haven't we?

  494. Obviously we

  495. now need to

  496. look and see

  497. if we can

  498. find in this

  499. passage a

  500. right attitude

  501. to Jesus

  502. and his

  503. deaths,

  504. don't we?

  505. Let's look

  506. at verses

  507. 40 to

  508. 42.

  509. What then

  510. is the

  511. right attitude

  512. for us

  513. to have

  514. to Jesus

  515. dying on

  516. the cross?

  517. Well in

  518. verse 40

  519. we discover

  520. that the

  521. other criminal,

  522. so we've

  523. had the

  524. first one

  525. on my

  526. left,

  527. the other

  528. one,

  529. the second

  530. one,

  531. say,

  532. on Jesus'

  533. right,

  534. rebukes

  535. the first

  536. criminal,

  537. says,

  538. don't you

  539. mock him,

  540. don't you

  541. fear God,

  542. since you

  543. and I

  544. are both

  545. under the

  546. same

  547. sentence

  548. of death.

  549. And although

  550. one dying

  551. thief had

  552. had a

  553. very bad

  554. attitude to

  555. Jesus,

  556. even insulting

  557. him in

  558. verse 39,

  559. and the

  560. other one

  561. did at

  562. first as

  563. well,

  564. we understand

  565. from the

  566. other

  567. gospels,

  568. yet this

  569. other one

  570. says in

  571. verse 41,

  572. we are

  573. being punished

  574. justly,

  575. for we are

  576. getting what

  577. our deeds

  578. deserve,

  579. that this

  580. man has

  581. done,

  582. this man

  583. Jesus,

  584. has done

  585. nothing wrong.

  586. Now what

  587. kind of

  588. attitude is

  589. this second

  590. thief showing

  591. us to

  592. the Lord

  593. Jesus?

  594. What kind

  595. of attitude

  596. is that?

  597. It's an

  598. attitude of

  599. humility,

  600. is it not?

  601. It's an

  602. attitude of

  603. awareness of

  604. his sin.

  605. It's an

  606. attitude of

  607. awareness of

  608. justice,

  609. God's justice,

  610. I think,

  611. too,

  612. isn't it?

  613. And we

  614. know that

  615. because in

  616. verse 42,

  617. then he

  618. says,

  619. Jesus,

  620. he somehow

  621. turns himself

  622. and addresses

  623. Jesus.

  624. Jesus,

  625. remember me

  626. when you

  627. come into

  628. your kingdom.

  629. So,

  630. in addition to

  631. his attitude

  632. of humility,

  633. awareness of

  634. sin,

  635. and awareness

  636. of God's

  637. justice,

  638. this second

  639. criminal,

  640. second thief,

  641. also has an

  642. awareness that

  643. Jesus is the

  644. saviour,

  645. that Jesus is

  646. the king.

  647. The sign

  648. above Jesus'

  649. head said

  650. so.

  651. In verse 38,

  652. the king

  653. of the

  654. Jews.

  655. And somehow

  656. he knows

  657. that the

  658. only one

  659. who can

  660. save him

  661. now from

  662. God's

  663. justice,

  664. from all

  665. his sin

  666. and

  667. criminality,

  668. the only

  669. one who

  670. can save

  671. him now

  672. is Jesus.

  673. And you

  674. know perhaps

  675. that Jesus'

  676. name itself

  677. means God

  678. saves.

  679. So he

  680. turns to

  681. him and

  682. says,

  683. Jesus,

  684. God saves,

  685. remember me

  686. when you

  687. come into

  688. your kingdom.

  689. them.

  690. And so he

  691. urgently wants

  692. to be saved

  693. and he

  694. urgently wants

  695. to make

  696. the knowledge

  697. that he

  698. has been

  699. saved,

  700. that he

  701. will be

  702. forgiven,

  703. that he

  704. is forgiven,

  705. personal.

  706. And so he

  707. doesn't just

  708. say,

  709. Jesus,

  710. remember,

  711. he says,

  712. Jesus,

  713. remember me,

  714. doesn't he?

  715. You notice that

  716. little word,

  717. Jesus,

  718. remember me.

  719. And somehow,

  720. I suppose,

  721. by the working

  722. of the Holy

  723. Spirit in his

  724. heart and what

  725. he's previously

  726. heard and

  727. understood,

  728. he now

  729. understands

  730. that Jesus

  731. was dying

  732. so that his

  733. sins,

  734. this career

  735. thief's sins

  736. could be

  737. forgiven.

  738. And that is

  739. the right

  740. attitude for

  741. him to

  742. model and

  743. for us to

  744. have as well,

  745. isn't it?

  746. We must have

  747. that same

  748. humble,

  749. urgent,

  750. personal,

  751. trusting

  752. attitude to

  753. Jesus and

  754. especially to

  755. Jesus dying

  756. on the

  757. cross.

  758. Have you

  759. got that

  760. kind of

  761. attitude to

  762. Jesus and

  763. his death

  764. on the

  765. cross?

  766. We've

  767. looked at

  768. bad attitudes

  769. to Jesus,

  770. haven't we?

  771. We've

  772. looked at

  773. the right

  774. attitude that

  775. this second

  776. thief,

  777. criminal,

  778. exhibited

  779. towards Jesus.

  780. Thirdly,

  781. then,

  782. look specifically

  783. at verse

  784. 43 and

  785. we'll see

  786. Jesus'

  787. promise to

  788. this dying

  789. criminal,

  790. Jesus'

  791. promise to

  792. all of us

  793. in this

  794. room,

  795. in fact.

  796. So,

  797. verse 43,

  798. then.

  799. How do we

  800. know that

  801. the second

  802. thief,

  803. criminal,

  804. on the

  805. cross,

  806. who had

  807. lived his

  808. whole life

  809. in sin,

  810. at that

  811. very last

  812. moment,

  813. lastminute.com

  814. you might

  815. say,

  816. was saved

  817. by Jesus.

  818. How do we

  819. know he

  820. was saved

  821. by Jesus?

  822. Well,

  823. we know it

  824. because of

  825. verse 43.

  826. Jesus somehow

  827. turns to him

  828. and he answers

  829. him and he

  830. says,

  831. truly,

  832. amen,

  833. I tell you,

  834. today,

  835. you will

  836. be with

  837. me in

  838. paradise,

  839. not just

  840. on holiday,

  841. but in

  842. paradise,

  843. in heaven,

  844. you see.

  845. And so right

  846. at the end

  847. of his life,

  848. this second

  849. criminal turns

  850. to Jesus

  851. and says,

  852. save me in

  853. effect,

  854. doesn't he?

  855. And Jesus

  856. somehow turns

  857. to him and

  858. he saves him,

  859. doesn't he?

  860. He makes this

  861. amazing promise.

  862. Truly,

  863. I tell you,

  864. today,

  865. you will

  866. be with

  867. me in

  868. paradise,

  869. the very

  870. opposite of

  871. dying on

  872. a cross.

  873. And that

  874. happened right

  875. at the end

  876. of this man's

  877. life,

  878. didn't it?

  879. Right at the

  880. end,

  881. lastminute.com.

  882. Now the

  883. Bible also

  884. warns us,

  885. do you remember

  886. what it says

  887. in Ecclesiastes

    Ecclesiastes 12:1

  888. chapter 12

  889. verse 1?

  890. Very wise

  891. advice is

  892. given to us,

  893. and indeed

  894. not just

  895. advice,

  896. but a

  897. command,

  898. remember

  899. your

  900. creator

  901. in the

  902. days of

  903. your youth,

  904. before the

  905. days of

  906. trouble

  907. come.

  908. I bet that

  909. thief wished

  910. he'd taken

  911. notice of

  912. that advice,

  913. that wisdom

  914. earlier.

  915. But,

  916. we have

  917. Luke chapter

    Luke 23 chapter mention

  918. 23,

  919. don't we?

  920. And God

  921. has given

  922. us this

  923. thief on

  924. the cross,

  925. this criminal,

  926. to teach

  927. us that we

  928. can be

  929. saved,

  930. we can

  931. be forgiven,

  932. whatever

  933. our past

  934. lives have

  935. been like,

  936. and even if

  937. we don't

  938. have any

  939. future

  940. life to

  941. speak of

  942. less as

  943. well.

  944. And it's

  945. an amazing

  946. thing,

  947. isn't it,

  948. that every

  949. now and

  950. then,

  951. God shows

  952. his mercy

  953. to someone

  954. foolishly

  955. late in

  956. life.

  957. Now,

  958. I'm not

  959. recommending it,

  960. God has

  961. to have

  962. to have

  963. a lot of

  964. things.

  965. But,

  966. it does happen

  967. sometimes.

  968. And I hope

  969. that was what

  970. happened to

  971. Norman in

  972. Devon that I

  973. told you about

  974. at the beginning

  975. of this message.

  976. God had

  977. mercy on him

  978. very late

  979. in his life.

  980. I also had

  981. two granddads,

  982. one was called

  983. Darby Grandad,

  984. one was called

  985. London Grandad,

  986. I'll leave you to

  987. work out why.

  988. And it seems

  989. that London Grandad,

  990. my London Grandad,

  991. also turned to

  992. the Lord Jesus

  993. Christ in

  994. repentance,

  995. more or less,

  996. on his very

  997. deathbed.

  998. So,

  999. that seems

  1000. to be what's

  1001. happened to

  1002. Norman in

  1003. Devon,

  1004. the thief on

  1005. the cross,

  1006. and even my

  1007. London Grandad.

  1008. And you say,

  1009. well,

  1010. what exactly

  1011. happened at

  1012. these last

  1013. moments in

  1014. people's lives?

  1015. Well,

  1016. let's look at

  1017. what happened

  1018. to this second

  1019. thief,

  1020. as in

  1021. verse 43

  1022. and verse

  1023. 42 of our

  1024. passage.

  1025. And I need

  1026. a big book,

  1027. a big black

  1028. book,

  1029. to do with a

  1030. much heavier,

  1031. more sinister

  1032. coloured book

  1033. really than

  1034. this one,

  1035. I think.

  1036. Two things

  1037. happened in

  1038. verse 43.

  1039. One is this,

  1040. God took

  1041. that criminal,

  1042. that second

  1043. thief's

  1044. worthless,

  1045. sinful life.

  1046. All his bad

  1047. record of

  1048. everything he'd

  1049. done.

  1050. and he gave

  1051. it to

  1052. Jesus.

  1053. That's the

  1054. first thing.

  1055. All his sin

  1056. was transferred

  1057. to Jesus,

  1058. who at that

  1059. very moment

  1060. was dying,

  1061. paying for it

  1062. on the cross.

  1063. And there

  1064. was a second

  1065. thing I said.

  1066. Yes,

  1067. the other

  1068. thing,

  1069. the second

  1070. thing that

  1071. God did at

  1072. that moment

  1073. in his

  1074. justice was

  1075. he took

  1076. Jesus'

  1077. perfect life,

  1078. he took

  1079. all Jesus'

  1080. innocence

  1081. and his

  1082. perfect record,

  1083. and he gave

  1084. that to

  1085. this second

  1086. thief on

  1087. the cross.

  1088. Those two

  1089. things happened.

  1090. And Jesus

  1091. has promised

  1092. to you,

  1093. right now in

  1094. fact,

  1095. is that if you

  1096. humbly cry

  1097. out to him,

  1098. remember me,

  1099. even from in

  1100. heaven,

  1101. where Jesus is

  1102. now,

  1103. he will take

  1104. you to be

  1105. with him

  1106. in paradise

  1107. if you die

  1108. before Sunday

  1109. lunch today,

  1110. or if you

  1111. die in 80

  1112. years'

  1113. time.

  1114. It doesn't

  1115. really matter,

  1116. does it?

  1117. But Jesus

  1118. can and will

  1119. do the same

  1120. for you if

  1121. you turn to

  1122. Jesus like

  1123. that thief

  1124. did.

  1125. Jesus,

  1126. remember me.

  1127. You put

  1128. your trust

  1129. in him.

  1130. So,

  1131. in conclusion

  1132. then,

  1133. that really

  1134. raises three

  1135. things.

  1136. Here's the

  1137. first one.

  1138. Excuse me.

  1139. Maybe you

  1140. have had a

  1141. rather mocking,

  1142. dare I say,

  1143. or at least

  1144. a careless

  1145. attitude to

  1146. Jesus and

  1147. his blood-bought

  1148. salvation.

  1149. Maybe that's

  1150. you this

  1151. morning.

  1152. Maybe you

  1153. sniggered when

  1154. you saw a

  1155. car bumper

  1156. sticker that

  1157. said something

  1158. like,

  1159. Jesus saves,

  1160. but Harry

  1161. Kane scores

  1162. on the

  1163. rebound.

  1164. I think

  1165. that's roughly

  1166. up to date,

  1167. isn't it?

  1168. Maybe you

  1169. laughed at

  1170. that.

  1171. Well,

  1172. that means

  1173. that you

  1174. have a

  1175. careless,

  1176. perhaps even

  1177. a mocking

  1178. attitude to

  1179. Jesus and

  1180. his salvation.

  1181. But,

  1182. you know,

  1183. your attitude

  1184. to Jesus,

  1185. especially to

  1186. his saving

  1187. death,

  1188. is the

  1189. most important

  1190. thing.

  1191. Nothing

  1192. matters more.

  1193. that's the

  1194. first thing.

  1195. Secondly,

  1196. maybe you've

  1197. not quite

  1198. had the

  1199. confidence to

  1200. trust Jesus

  1201. personally,

  1202. so you're

  1203. certainly not

  1204. mocking Jesus,

  1205. you're not

  1206. taking his

  1207. death on the

  1208. cross lightly,

  1209. but you have

  1210. somehow not

  1211. yet relied on

  1212. him, you

  1213. have somehow

  1214. not yet cried

  1215. out to him,

  1216. Jesus,

  1217. remember me

  1218. and save me.

  1219. Maybe you're a

  1220. little bit like

  1221. the audience

  1222. of one

  1223. Charles Blondin

  1224. who was

  1225. actually French,

  1226. I think his

  1227. name is

  1228. Charles Blondin,

  1229. he had an

  1230. audience in

  1231. 1859,

  1232. see the

  1233. picture,

  1234. see what he's

  1235. doing there?

  1236. The picture's on

  1237. your handouts

  1238. as well.

  1239. He's crossing

  1240. the Niagara Falls

  1241. because he is a

  1242. tightrope

  1243. walker,

  1244. and he's doing

  1245. it with a

  1246. wheelbarrow in

  1247. front of him

  1248. as well,

  1249. and the

  1250. crowd is

  1251. oohing and

  1252. aahing as

  1253. he stops in

  1254. the middle and

  1255. pretends

  1256. nearly to

  1257. fall off

  1258. and that

  1259. kind of

  1260. thing.

  1261. And he

  1262. gets to the

  1263. other side

  1264. where the

  1265. audience are.

  1266. There's

  1267. Charles Blondin,

  1268. Charles Blondin,

  1269. and he says,

  1270. do you believe

  1271. I can carry a

  1272. person across

  1273. the Niagara Falls

  1274. in this

  1275. wheelbarrow?

  1276. Now no doubt

  1277. some people

  1278. kept very

  1279. quiet at that

  1280. point,

  1281. because they

  1282. could see

  1283. where this

  1284. was going.

  1285. But there

  1286. were others

  1287. who were just

  1288. there for the

  1289. entertainment,

  1290. and they said,

  1291. yes,

  1292. yes,

  1293. you were the

  1294. greatest

  1295. tightrope

  1296. walker there

  1297. ever was.

  1298. Okay,

  1299. says Mr.

  1300. Blondin,

  1301. or his

  1302. manager did,

  1303. get into

  1304. the wheelbarrow.

  1305. And nobody

  1306. did,

  1307. at least on

  1308. that occasion

  1309. anyway,

  1310. because they

  1311. lacked the

  1312. confidence to

  1313. trust Monsieur

  1314. Blondin.

  1315. Personally,

  1316. you see,

  1317. they somehow

  1318. weren't quite

  1319. prepared to

  1320. put their

  1321. bodies where

  1322. their mouths

  1323. were,

  1324. sort of

  1325. thing.

  1326. Now,

  1327. the thief

  1328. on the

  1329. cross was

  1330. not like

  1331. that at

  1332. all.

  1333. And the

  1334. thief on

  1335. the cross

  1336. is in

  1337. the Bible

  1338. to give

  1339. you and

  1340. me complete

  1341. confidence

  1342. that even

  1343. if we cry

  1344. out at the

  1345. very last

  1346. moment with

  1347. a life of

  1348. sin behind

  1349. us and

  1350. nothing else,

  1351. Jesus,

  1352. remember me,

  1353. that not only

  1354. can he save

  1355. you,

  1356. but he will.

  1357. He promises

  1358. to save you,

  1359. you see.

  1360. Even today,

  1361. if you

  1362. died,

  1363. you would

  1364. be with

  1365. him in

  1366. paradise.

  1367. If you

  1368. died before

  1369. lunch,

  1370. you would

  1371. go straight

  1372. to be with

  1373. Jesus.

  1374. And the

  1375. question has

  1376. to be,

  1377. are you

  1378. ready to

  1379. get into

  1380. Jesus'

  1381. wheelbarrow,

  1382. so to

  1383. speak?

  1384. And thirdly,

  1385. then,

  1386. maybe you

  1387. understand what

  1388. Jesus did

  1389. when he

  1390. deliberately

  1391. sacrificed

  1392. himself on

  1393. the cross.

  1394. maybe you

  1395. are actually

  1396. ready to

  1397. make Jesus'

  1398. salvation

  1399. personal for

  1400. yourself.

  1401. In which

  1402. case,

  1403. with that

  1404. dying thief,

  1405. I urge you

  1406. to say,

  1407. I urge you

  1408. to pray,

  1409. Jesus,

  1410. remember me,

  1411. Jesus,

  1412. forgive me,

  1413. save me,

  1414. I'm sorry I

  1415. left it till

  1416. now,

  1417. but I

  1418. remember there's

  1419. another verse

  1420. in the Bible

  1421. that says that

  1422. now is the

  1423. day of salvation,

  1424. so please,

  1425. save me,

  1426. now,

  1427. and then I

  1428. will live

  1429. the rest

  1430. of my

  1431. life for

  1432. you.

  1433. It might

  1434. be short,

  1435. or I

  1436. might die

  1437. in 80

  1438. years.

  1439. That's

  1440. what we

  1441. need to

  1442. pray,

  1443. isn't it?

  1444. Should we

  1445. do that

  1446. right now?
