  1. Do open your Bible to Matthew chapter 16, which is on page 823.

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  2. !

  3. And verses 15 to 20, but the whole chapter in lots of ways.

  4. There's no introduction, I've got three points.

  5. And my two points are, we need to love the church as Jesus does.

  6. We need to see the church as Jesus does.

  7. And number three, we need to treat the church as Jesus does.

  8. So first of all, we need to love the church as Jesus does.

  9. Look at verse 15.

  10. That's the kind of language it uses.

  11. How does it begin?

  12. It begins, if your brother.

  13. If we translated if your brother or sister in that way.

  14. If your brother, so that church is a family.

  15. It is a family of believers, of brothers and sisters, and mothers and fathers, who are brought together in this great assembly.

  16. In other words, what Jesus is saying is, if you want to live as a Christian, that the business of the Christian life is not isolated individualism.

  17. It's not about doing church on your own.

  18. It's not about you being able to listen to a sermon online so you can save a bit of time on Sundays.

  19. It's about people.

  20. It's about knowing God with others.

  21. It's not about you getting along in your Christian life on your own.

  22. It's about a community.

  23. And you can see, and I want to try and show you, that this is the big idea of the chapter.

  24. So look at verse 2.

  25. Jesus calls him to bring a little child and put him in the middle of them.

  26. And he speaks about the presence of God and the community life of the people of God.

  27. He says these people, they belong here.

  28. They have relationships within the church.

  29. And he illustrates that.

  30. He illustrates from this child what it means to be inside the kingdom of God

  31. but what it means to be outside the kingdom of God, the church.

  32. And so he puts this child in the middle of his disciples.

  33. And it's one of the number of occasions when Jesus did this in his day.

  34. And it well indicates the culture.

  35. And so at that point, in this point of history, children had no status, no rank, no rights.

  36. They were to be seen and not heard.

  37. Or maybe even not seen and not heard.

  38. They didn't factor in.

  39. Children were disposable.

  40. Children were even dispensable.

  41. You can read horrific accounts in Roman history.

  42. And so here is Jesus teaching his name.

  43. That children are not dispensable to Christ's church.

  44. Children are part of the fellowship of the people of God.

  45. That's why we love them being in here.

  46. Even when there's a little bit of background noise.

  47. Occasionally.

  48. Children are part of the fellowship of God.

  49. And this little one, he represents, doesn't he?

  50. Actually, all Christians.

  51. In fact, he says, adult believers, grown-ups,

  52. so-called men and women are to become like this little child.

  53. They're to become like this little child,

  54. both in their utter dependence upon the Lord Jesus,

  55. and I think what Jesus is teaching here

  56. is exactly what Peter is teaching at Pentecost.

  57. That the membership of his church is made up of believers and their children.

  58. And the presence of children in the fellowship of the church

  59. is to be a constant reminder of what Jesus is doing.

  60. A constant reminder to us, in a sense,

  61. that spiritually we should never grow up.

  62. We should never grow up beyond that state.

  63. We never get beyond the status of a child.

  64. We should all be as unselfconscious and trusting as little children.

  65. As absolutely dependent on God and his grace.

  66. You see, there is no place in the church

  67. for people asserting their rights.

  68. For people pushing others around.

  69. Always rubbishing others.

  70. For people claiming priority.

  71. We are to be humble like little children.

  72. Unselfconscious.

  73. Standing there in the midst of the disciples.

  74. And so let the children, as we gather Sunday by Sunday,

  75. be a constant reminder of Jesus' words.

  76. And this childlike faith is to be a feature of the whole life of the believer.

  77. It's not just you've got to humble yourself in order to get into the Christian life.

  78. No.

  79. The whole of the Christian life is about humbling yourself before,

  80. under the mighty hand of God.

  81. And if it's a Samsonite, there is nothing more terrifying

  82. than to cause one of these little ones to sin.

  83. There's no doubt, is there, that people will sin.

  84. Temptations will come upon everybody, whatever age you are,

  85. or whatever stage you're at in your life.

  86. But what Jesus says is,

  87. Woe to the one by whom the temptation comes.

  88. And you make sure that though people are being tempted and falling into sin,

  89. you're not the cause of that.

  90. You're not the one who's tripping them out.

  91. You're not the one who is leading them into sinful behaviour,

  92. because that is a terrifying thing to do.

  93. And then in verses 10 to 14,

  94. he says,

  95. Don't despise the little children,

  96. both physically and spiritually.

  97. Verse 10,

  98. See that you don't despise one of these little ones.

  99. Jesus is teaching us to need to follow people.

  100. Whatever their age, he illustrates it.

  101. He illustrates it from what the Father does.

  102. What does the Father do?

  103. Well, when one of these little ones goes astray,

  104. one of his believing ones goes astray,

  105. the Father leaves everything,

  106. and he goes out to look for his lost sheep.

  107. Because he is the shepherd,

  108. and he cares for,

  109. and he loves his people,

  110. his sheep,

  111. his church.

  112. And Jesus is saying to us,

  113. You and I should love the church

  114. the way the Father does.

  115. And the way that the Son does.

  116. And again, this picks up, doesn't it,

  117. a language or a thread

  118. that runs right the way through the Bible?

  119. That God is the shepherd of his people.

  120. And to Psalm 100,

  121. We are the sheep of his pasture.

  122. Psalm 23,

  123. The Lord is my shepherd.

  124. Psalm 40,

  125. Tends his flock like a shepherd.

  126. He gathers the lambs to his heart,

  127. and he carries them close.

  128. So whether you're a young lamb,

  129. or an old sheep,

  130. the Lord is the shepherd of Israel.

  131. Matthew 2,

  132. you see it.

  133. He will shepherd his people Israel.

  134. The Lord Jesus says,

  135. I am the good shepherd

  136. who lays down his life for the sheep.

  137. And all this language

  138. is pointing you and I

  139. to value Jesus' people.

  140. So I ask you,

  141. do you love the church?

  142. Do you love Jesus' people?

  143. How do I love them?

  144. Not by setting myself over them

  145. as if I'm superior.

  146. Not by comparing myself to others

  147. as if they were kind of my Lord.

  148. Or they were the ones

  149. that I was meant to be following.

  150. I love others not by injuring

  151. or abusing

  152. or leading them into sin.

  153. Whether that's theological error

  154. or morally wrong.

  155. I love others not by ignoring them

  156. or showing a blind eye

  157. to those who've gone astray.

  158. But rather,

  159. like the good shepherd,

  160. I do what he does.

  161. And so I have to love the church

  162. and I have to give myself for it.

  163. And that takes commitment,

  164. doesn't it?

  165. And that takes effort.

  166. And that takes making it a priority.

  167. Secondly,

  168. I need to see the church

  169. the way that Jesus

  170. sees the church.

  171. Can we come again to verse 15?

  172. If your brother

  173. sins against you.

  174. So if your brother or sister

  175. and that is somebody

  176. who goes to the same church family

  177. as you do,

  178. if they sin against you,

  179. Jesus is presuming,

  180. isn't he,

  181. that in his church

  182. it will be marked

  183. this side of heaven,

  184. this side of glory

  185. by sin and by weakness.

  186. And so Jesus does not expect

  187. the perfect church

  188. to those who do.

  189. Martin Luther had a saying,

  190. he said,

  191. the face of the church

  192. is the face of a sinner.

  193. The Western Confession of Faith

  194. and our Confession of Faith

  195. says the purest of churches,

  196. the best of churches

  197. under heaven

  198. are subject to both

  199. mixture and error.

  200. And some are so degenerated

  201. to become as no churches

  202. of Christ

  203. but synagogues of Satan.

  204. Churches are not perfect.

  205. And again,

  206. that's been a theme

  207. in Matthew's Gospel.

  208. There are weeds

  209. as well as wheat.

  210. There are goats

  211. as well as sheep.

  212. There are some

  213. in the church

  214. who are wolves

  215. in sheep's clothing.

  216. The church is not perfect.

  217. And some of the problems

  218. that we have

  219. with churches

  220. and some of the problems

  221. we have

  222. with other Christians

  223. is that we are

  224. practical perfectionists.

  225. And sometimes

  226. it's just that

  227. we've not looked in the mirror

  228. and see how imperfect we are.

  229. We see the imperfections

  230. of everyone else,

  231. don't we?

  232. And so you go to Revelation

  233. and the last book

  234. of the Bible,

  235. chapter 2 and chapter 3

  236. and we are given

  237. an overview of the church.

  238. A perfect picture

  239. of the church.

  240. It's a complete picture

  241. of the church.

  242. It's a seven-fold picture.

  243. It's a picture

  244. of completeness

  245. of what Jesus sees

  246. in his church.

  247. And there it is.

  248. And you read

  249. those seven churches

  250. and you find out

  251. that the five

  252. of the seven churches

  253. were seriously

  254. screwed up.

  255. And two of the seven

  256. are going right down

  257. the road

  258. where Jesus said

  259. I'm tempted

  260. just to extinguish

  261. the light of you,

  262. the stuff you want.

  263. Altogether,

  264. you've got so bad.

  265. And we need to see

  266. the church

  267. the way that Jesus does

  268. a sinful congregation.

  269. There is coming

  270. a day,

  271. and it's going to be

  272. a wonderful day

  273. when the Lord Jesus Christ

  274. comes again

  275. and he will present

  276. his church

  277. without spot

  278. or wrinkle

  279. or any such thing.

  280. But today,

  281. as I look around,

  282. there are a fair few

  283. wrinkles out there

  284. and a fair few spots.

  285. And IPC is an

  286. ace and imperfect church.

  287. And so is every true church.

  288. And so the first thing

  289. that strikes you

  290. in verse 15

  291. is if your brother

  292. sins.

  293. He's not suggesting

  294. that that is impossible.

  295. He's suggesting

  296. that this will happen.

  297. It will happen.

  298. There's two ways

  299. of reading this verse.

  300. Whether he's speaking

  301. generally,

  302. whether he's saying

  303. if your brother sins

  304. in his tenth period,

  305. or if your brother

  306. sins in his tenth period,

  307. it means you.

  308. And we need to know

  309. what's going to happen.

  310. So it's illustrated

  311. in this chapter.

  312. Again, look at

  313. verse 1.

  314. The chapter has got

  315. two questions.

  316. And this illustration

  317. of a kind of

  318. simple message.

  319. There's a verse 1.

  320. The disciples ask,

  321. who is the greatest

  322. in the kingdom of heaven?

  323. And that is not

  324. a statement about

  325. Christology.

  326. That is not a statement

  327. where they're expecting

  328. Jesus to speak

  329. about himself.

  330. They are expecting

  331. him to say,

  332. well,

  333. of course,

  334. you are John

  335. or you are Jesus.

  336. And the disciples,

  337. they are the ones

  338. that are jockeying

  339. for position

  340. and place

  341. and prestige.

  342. In other words,

  343. that's what church

  344. is like.

  345. Sinful people,

  346. fallen people.

  347. And these are the

  348. apostles.

  349. Top guys.

  350. And that's the way

  351. they were in that

  352. stage of their lives.

  353. And so often

  354. in the church,

  355. you'll find people

  356. that have not been

  357. able to make much

  358. of an impression

  359. in their day-to-day

  360. vocation,

  361. in their work,

  362. but in church,

  363. they throw their

  364. weight about.

  365. And they've got

  366. power in their hands

  367. and it goes to

  368. their heads

  369. and they become

  370. insufferable.

  371. And they become

  372. overbearing.

  373. Or there are other

  374. people and they're

  375. influential in their

  376. day-jobs and they

  377. walk in and they

  378. think they can be

  379. influential in the

  380. church as well.

  381. But that's not the

  382. way it's meant to be,

  383. is it?

  384. In other words,

  385. it doesn't really

  386. matter if you're

  387. doing well or not

  388. doing so well in

  389. your day-job.

  390. That's not what

  391. makes for status

  392. or position.

  393. position in the

  394. church.

  395. Jesus is at

  396. pains to point

  397. that out,

  398. doesn't he?

  399. That in his

  400. kingdom,

  401. the usual values

  402. of the world

  403. don't apply in

  404. the church.

  405. And so nobody

  406. acts as if they

  407. own the place.

  408. We're all to be

  409. humble children.

  410. Look at the

  411. second question,

  412. verse 21.

  413. Peter has a

  414. question,

  415. he comes up and

  416. he says to him,

  417. Lord, how often

  418. should my brother

  419. sin against me

  420. and I forgive him

  421. as many as

  422. seven times?

  423. And I think

  424. Peter is feeling

  425. pretty good about

  426. himself in

  427. verse 21.

  428. He's feeling

  429. pretty spiritual.

  430. And the religious

  431. teachers of the

  432. day, the Pharisees

  433. and the teachers

  434. of the law,

  435. lay in rules about

  436. how often you

  437. were to forgive.

  438. And they

  439. talk that if

  440. somebody sinned

  441. against you,

  442. just to be

  443. gracious and

  444. merciful, you

  445. could forgive

  446. them after three

  447. times.

  448. Three strikes

  449. and you're out.

  450. Which is Peter.

  451. And Peter says

  452. what the Pharisees

  453. say three times,

  454. but I guess,

  455. Jesus, you like

  456. the number seven,

  457. it's a perfect

  458. number, a complete

  459. number.

  460. But Peter isn't

  461. getting it, is he?

  462. Because he doesn't

  463. understand the grace

  464. of the Lord Jesus

  465. yet.

  466. There are different

  467. values.

  468. No, Jesus says,

  469. you keep going.

  470. Can you see verse 22?

  471. I do not say to you

  472. seven times, but

  473. 77 times.

  474. Seven times seven.

  475. To infinity and

  476. beyond you forgive.

  477. There's no end

  478. to forgiveness that

  479. you want to show

  480. one another.

  481. Within the body

  482. of Christ.

  483. And so, within

  484. the body of Christ,

  485. within the church,

  486. be sure of this.

  487. Your brother or

  488. your sister will

  489. sin against you.

  490. Let me say what

  491. that sinning against

  492. you is.

  493. It is minor

  494. irritation.

  495. Or annoying

  496. behaviour.

  497. Or petty

  498. complaints.

  499. sinning against you

  500. is not things that

  501. you just don't

  502. like.

  503. I've gone to write

  504. a list at this

  505. point.

  506. Of the various

  507. things that I think

  508. folk get upset

  509. about.

  510. That aren't

  511. sinful and then I

  512. realised I'd

  513. probably get fired

  514. for it.

  515. He's not thinking

  516. about things that

  517. we elevate to

  518. really, really

  519. important, but the

  520. Bible doesn't

  521. elevate them.

  522. The Bible tells

  523. you what sin is,

  524. doesn't it?

  525. We don't make

  526. up what sins

  527. are.

  528. And lots and

  529. lots of things

  530. that people get

  531. upset about in

  532. church are like,

  533. are not sinful.

  534. But note the

  535. realism of Jesus.

  536. Can you see it?

  537. He says your

  538. brother will

  539. sin against you.

  540. That is, he'll

  541. actually do

  542. something, whether

  543. that is he'll

  544. teach you something

  545. wrong, or teach

  546. you a wrong

  547. practice, or he'll

  548. do something to

  549. injure you in

  550. some way, or

  551. despise you in

  552. some way.

  553. Love the church

  554. as Jesus does.

  555. See the church

  556. as Jesus does,

  557. and thirdly, treat

  558. the church as

  559. Jesus does.

  560. What does God

  561. do when his

  562. followers go

  563. astray?

  564. Look at the

  565. context.

  566. The whole chapter

  567. hangs together.

  568. The previous

  569. parable is so

  570. important.

  571. What does God

  572. do?

  573. He goes out

  574. looking for

  575. his children.

  576. There's a really

  577. deliberate

  578. connection

  579. between each

  580. of the stories

  581. in this chapter.

  582. And how does

  583. God go out

  584. looking for

  585. lost sheep?

  586. The Father

  587. goes out

  588. looking for

  589. them.

  590. Your Father

  591. in heaven, he

  592. doesn't will

  593. that any of

  594. these little

  595. ones should

  596. perish.

  597. If your

  598. brother sins

  599. against you,

  600. see the

  601. connection?

  602. How does

  603. the Father

  604. go looking for

  605. the sinning

  606. one?

  607. How does

  608. the Father

  609. find lost

  610. sheep?

  611. When in

  612. this context,

  613. it is the

  614. family.

  615. Jesus uses

  616. the power

  617. of the

  618. lost sheep

  619. in two

  620. different ways.

  621. I think he

  622. uses it

  623. differently in

  624. Luke 15

  625. than he does

  626. in Matthew

  627. 18.

  628. In Luke 15,

  629. it's about

  630. reaching the

  631. outsider.

  632. But here,

  633. it is most

  634. definitely about

  635. reaching the

  636. insider.

  637. Note the

  638. use of little

  639. ones in

  640. verse 10.

  641. How does

  642. he find the

  643. little one

  644. that is lost?

  645. how does

  646. God go

  647. after his

  648. wayward

  649. children?

  650. Can you

  651. see it?

  652. Verse 15,

  653. you go.

  654. You go,

  655. sir.

  656. That's a

  657. very, very

  658. important thing

  659. to understand.

  660. That God

  661. uses us as

  662. his people to

  663. reach out to

  664. offenders.

  665. God

  666. exercises the

  667. rule of

  668. the church

  669. and the

  670. care of

  671. his church

  672. through his

  673. people.

  674. So the

  675. people he

  676. has sent

  677. into your

  678. life, you

  679. are responsible

  680. for.

  681. People you

  682. know you

  683. are responsible

  684. for in the

  685. body of

  686. Christ.

  687. And so in

  688. Galatians,

  689. it says if

  690. someone is

  691. caught in a

  692. sin, you

  693. are spiritual

  694. should restore

  695. him gently.

  696. In 5,

  697. if one of

  698. you should

  699. wander from

  700. the truth,

  701. someone should

  702. bring him

  703. back from

  704. remember this,

  705. whoever should

  706. turn a

  707. sinner from

  708. the errors

  709. of his

  710. ways will

  711. save him

  712. from death

  713. and cover

  714. up a

  715. multitude of

  716. sins.

  717. So you

  718. go, you.

  719. How am I

  720. to go?

  721. I'm not

  722. going to go

  723. heresy

  724. hunting.

  725. I'm not

  726. going to go

  727. prying into

  728. people's

  729. lives.

  730. I'm not

  731. going to

  732. setting them

  733. up for a

  734. fall.

  735. people.

  736. But I

  737. am to

  738. deal with

  739. what comes

  740. up in

  741. my

  742. relationships

  743. with

  744. them.

  745. And if

  746. my brother

  747. sins against

  748. me, I

  749. am to

  750. go.

  751. I am

  752. not to

  753. sit down

  754. and

  755. sulk.

  756. I am

  757. not to

  758. look the

  759. other way.

  760. I'm not

  761. to become

  762. passive-aggressive.

  763. I'm not to

  764. take four

  765. months off

  766. church.

  767. Or four

  768. weeks.

  769. I'm not to

  770. go home and

  771. complain.

  772. I'm not to

  773. speak to my

  774. friends and give

  775. off about it.

  776. I'm not to

  777. bury my

  778. head in

  779. sand.

  780. I'm not to

  781. say someone

  782. should be

  783. doing something

  784. about this.

  785. Where are the

  786. elders in

  787. this place?

  788. No, if

  789. your brother

  790. sins against

  791. you, you

  792. go and

  793. tell them.

  794. You don't

  795. send them a

  796. letter.

  797. You don't

  798. send them an

  799. email.

  800. You don't

  801. send them a

  802. text.

  803. You go to

  804. them, person

  805. to person.

  806. You are

  807. to go in

  808. a childlike,

  809. humble,

  810. believing,

  811. Christian

  812. way.

  813. And you

  814. have to

  815. go with

  816. what?

  817. You have

  818. to go with

  819. the heart

  820. of God

  821. looking for

  822. the restoration

  823. of the

  824. lost.

  825. Restoring

  826. them.

  827. And you

  828. have to

  829. go to

  830. them willing

  831. to forgive

  832. to infinity.

  833. A forgiving

  834. heart.

  835. That's how

  836. you're wanting

  837. to go.

  838. Taking the

  839. initiative to

  840. tell him or

  841. her a

  842. fault and

  843. remembering

  844. that you

  845. are a

  846. sinner and

  847. you tell

  848. them very

  849. gently your

  850. fault.

  851. That by the

  852. way is

  853. fulfilling,

  854. isn't it?

  855. Leviticus 17

  856. verse 19.

  857. That verse

  858. says, do not

  859. hate your

  860. brother in

  861. your heart.

  862. Repeat your

  863. brother frankly

  864. so that you

  865. will not share

  866. in his guilt.

  867. how do I

  868. hate my

  869. brother or

  870. sister?

  871. I hate my

  872. brother or

  873. sister if I

  874. see him or

  875. her in sin

  876. and I do

  877. nothing.

  878. I hate my

  879. brother or

  880. sister if I

  881. don't take

  882. responsibility

  883. for them.

  884. Well I can

  885. help them by

  886. speaking to

  887. them.

  888. So I go to

  889. them one to

  890. one in one

  891. in a private

  892. conversation and

  893. I allow real

  894. dialogue.

  895. In terms of

  896. normal life,

  897. private sin is

  898. dealt with

  899. privately between

  900. people.

  901. And what is

  902. the goal?

  903. The goal is

  904. there in

  905. verse 15,

  906. is that he

  907. listens to

  908. you.

  909. If he

  910. listens to

  911. you, you

  912. gave your

  913. brother, you

  914. want him to

  915. hear.

  916. And that

  917. may well mean

  918. you've got to

  919. listen as well.

  920. But listening

  921. is what you

  922. want.

  923. So that you

  924. can restore

  925. him or her

  926. again.

  927. And supposing

  928. you go

  929. gently and

  930. you get

  931. round to

  932. the subject.

  933. And supposing

  934. they don't

  935. listen.

  936. Well the

  937. next step

  938. kicks in.

  939. You take

  940. two or

  941. three witnesses.

  942. And so

  943. witnesses are

  944. taken at one

  945. level to

  946. avoid false

  947. accusations and

  948. frivolous

  949. allegations.

  950. And there

  951. are two or

  952. three because

  953. the law of

  954. Moses tells

  955. us that

  956. that's what

  957. makes a

  958. thing official

  959. or formal.

  960. And the

  961. point of two

  962. or three

  963. witnesses is

  964. in verse

  965. 16 is that

  966. every charge

  967. may be

  968. established

  969. literally

  970. made to

  971. stand.

  972. And so

  973. you go

  974. with your

  975. witnesses

  976. unless

  977. suppose they

  978. refuse to

  979. be reconciled.

  980. When you're

  981. taken to the

  982. church,

  983. particularly

  984. the elders,

  985. the judges

  986. of the

  987. congregation

  988. were appointed

  989. to act

  990. as judge

  991. in these

  992. matters.

  993. Peter is

  994. speaking to

  995. the disciples

  996. and he

  997. says if

  998. they don't

  999. listen to

  1000. the

  1001. church,

  1002. we'll

  1003. treat

  1004. them like

  1005. a

  1006. gentile

  1007. or a

  1008. tax

  1009. collector.

  1010. Here's the

  1011. ultimate

  1012. sacrifice,

  1013. which is not

  1014. to neek

  1015. at them,

  1016. not to

  1017. destroy their

  1018. reputation

  1019. publicly,

  1020. but it is

  1021. to treat

  1022. them as

  1023. their

  1024. behavior,

  1025. not as

  1026. a brother

  1027. or sister.

  1028. It is to

  1029. exclude them

  1030. from communion

  1031. and if there's

  1032. still no

  1033. repentance,

  1034. it is to

  1035. say we have

  1036. to treat you

  1037. as somebody

  1038. who is not

  1039. following the

  1040. Lord Jesus.

  1041. We have

  1042. to treat

  1043. you like

  1044. you're

  1045. acting.

  1046. You're

  1047. treating them

  1048. as their

  1049. behavior.

  1050. It's the

  1051. ultimate

  1052. sanction of

  1053. the church.

  1054. And some

  1055. of you hear

  1056. this and you

  1057. think,

  1058. good grief,

  1059. this is

  1060. terrifying.

  1061. What on

  1062. earth is

  1063. going on?

  1064. My faith

  1065. is my

  1066. business.

  1067. Isn't it

  1068. all about

  1069. Jesus and

  1070. me?

  1071. What has

  1072. the church

  1073. got to do

  1074. with me

  1075. and my

  1076. Christian

  1077. behavior?

  1078. And the

  1079. answer,

  1080. of course,

  1081. is the

  1082. church has

  1083. got everything

  1084. to do with

  1085. it.

  1086. Because you

  1087. are brought

  1088. into the

  1089. church and

  1090. you are

  1091. part of

  1092. it and

  1093. you are

  1094. one of

  1095. the people

  1096. of God.

  1097. And you

  1098. are a

  1099. man,

  1100. just like

  1101. that child

  1102. is among

  1103. the disciples,

  1104. you belong

  1105. there.

  1106. And it's

  1107. because Jesus

  1108. has given

  1109. authority to

  1110. the church.

  1111. Notice the

  1112. language in

  1113. verse 18.

  1114. I say to

  1115. you,

  1116. whatever you

  1117. bind on

  1118. earth shall

  1119. be bound

  1120. in heaven,

  1121. and whatever

  1122. you loose

  1123. on earth shall

  1124. be loosed

  1125. in heaven.

  1126. The binding

  1127. and the

  1128. loosing,

  1129. we've seen

  1130. it before,

  1131. it was given

  1132. to Peter,

  1133. wasn't it,

  1134. chapter 16.

  1135. And Peter

  1136. was given

  1137. the authority

  1138. to say who

  1139. was in and

  1140. wasn't in

  1141. the church.

  1142. And you

  1143. see him

  1144. exercising that

  1145. responsibility on

  1146. the day of

  1147. Pentecost when

  1148. he gets up and

  1149. he preaches

  1150. the gospel.

  1151. And he

  1152. said,

  1153. Jesus Christ

  1154. is the

  1155. only way of

  1156. salvation,

  1157. and so if

  1158. you believe in

  1159. him you will

  1160. be saved,

  1161. and if you

  1162. don't believe

  1163. in him you

  1164. will be

  1165. excreted and

  1166. damned.

  1167. And he

  1168. sets out

  1169. who is

  1170. in and

  1171. who isn't.

  1172. And the

  1173. promise he

  1174. says is for

  1175. you and

  1176. your children

  1177. and for

  1178. all who

  1179. are far

  1180. off.

  1181. And so

  1182. here Jesus

  1183. repeats it

  1184. to the

  1185. apostles.

  1186. Whatever you

  1187. bind on

  1188. earth will

  1189. be found

  1190. in heaven.

  1191. And later

  1192. on in

  1193. John's

  1194. gospel he

  1195. repeats it

  1196. again.

  1197. He says you

  1198. have the

  1199. authority to

  1200. forgive sins.

  1201. What is this

  1202. teaching us?

  1203. It's teaching you

  1204. and I that

  1205. the church

  1206. is the

  1207. earthly

  1208. instrument for

  1209. Christ's

  1210. heavenly

  1211. rule.

  1212. That Christ

  1213. has appointed

  1214. his church

  1215. on earth,

  1216. especially the

  1217. officers of

  1218. his church,

  1219. to be the

  1220. shepherds of

  1221. his people.

  1222. To administer

  1223. his rule in

  1224. the hearts of

  1225. his people.

  1226. And believers

  1227. when they

  1228. join the

  1229. church they

  1230. take vows

  1231. together to

  1232. submit to

  1233. his authority.

  1234. The authority

  1235. of the church.

  1236. And to those

  1237. who have been

  1238. committed to

  1239. exercise authority

  1240. within it,

  1241. the church

  1242. has the

  1243. authority to

  1244. bind and

  1245. to loose.

  1246. So whenever

  1247. we preach

  1248. the gospel,

  1249. whenever we

  1250. say believe

  1251. on the

  1252. Lord Jesus

  1253. and you

  1254. will be

  1255. saved,

  1256. we are

  1257. echoing

  1258. Jesus'

  1259. words.

  1260. We are

  1261. re-echoing

  1262. them.

  1263. Re-speaking

  1264. them.

  1265. And whenever

  1266. the church

  1267. is sitting

  1268. judicially

  1269. and it has

  1270. to deal

  1271. with a

  1272. case of

  1273. discipline,

  1274. it is

  1275. acting on

  1276. Jesus'

  1277. behalf.

  1278. And if

  1279. you are a

  1280. humble,

  1281. believing

  1282. Christian,

  1283. like this

  1284. little child

  1285. of Matthew

  1286. 18,

  1287. you will

  1288. submit to

  1289. your brothers

  1290. and sisters.

  1291. The promise

  1292. of Sarah

  1293. in verses

  1294. 19 and 20

  1295. is that again

  1296. I say to

  1297. you,

  1298. if two of

  1299. you agree

  1300. on earth

  1301. about anything

  1302. they ask,

  1303. it will be

  1304. done for

  1305. them by

  1306. my Father

  1307. in heaven.

  1308. For where

  1309. two or

  1310. three are

  1311. gathered in

  1312. my name,

  1313. there I

  1314. am among

  1315. them.

  1316. It's not a

  1317. general principle.

  1318. We love to

  1319. quote that

  1320. in general,

  1321. don't we?

  1322. The Bible

  1323. is a lot

  1324. of general

  1325. promises,

  1326. but this

  1327. isn't one,

  1328. it's not

  1329. actually about

  1330. prayer at

  1331. all.

  1332. The phrase

  1333. of agreeing

  1334. is actually

  1335. a legal

  1336. term.

  1337. It's in

  1338. the context

  1339. of if you

  1340. agree on

  1341. a judicial

  1342. matter,

  1343. any matter

  1344. of this

  1345. importance,

  1346. if you

  1347. agree as

  1348. the church

  1349. of God

  1350. like this,

  1351. you can

  1352. be sure

  1353. that you're

  1354. agreeing with

  1355. my Father

  1356. who is in

  1357. heaven.

  1358. Whenever

  1359. you gather

  1360. like this

  1361. as a church

  1362. to deal

  1363. with these

  1364. kind of

  1365. difficulties,

  1366. whenever

  1367. you're

  1368. together

  1369. in this

  1370. way,

  1371. seeking

  1372. the unity

  1373. of the

  1374. church,

  1375. and trying

  1376. to restore

  1377. a brother

  1378. or sister,

  1379. be sure

  1380. of this

  1381. from the

  1382. end of

  1383. the age,

  1384. that whenever

  1385. you gather

  1386. in my

  1387. name,

  1388. there I'll

  1389. be.

  1390. Let me

  1391. sum up,

  1392. and then I'm

  1393. going to

  1394. sum up

  1395. again.

  1396. We all

  1397. sin as

  1398. people of

  1399. God.

  1400. And we

  1401. must know

  1402. that our

  1403. sin is

  1404. going to

  1405. impact

  1406. people's

  1407. lives to

  1408. a greater

  1409. or less

  1410. a degree.

  1411. And so

  1412. you and

  1413. I must

  1414. keep short

  1415. accounts

  1416. to people.

  1417. We must

  1418. remember how

  1419. our actions

  1420. and our

  1421. choices

  1422. and our

  1423. words

  1424. impact

  1425. other

  1426. people.

  1427. They do.

  1428. And ask

  1429. yourself the

  1430. question,

  1431. will my

  1432. actions,

  1433. will my

  1434. words,

  1435. will I

  1436. air what

  1437. I think

  1438. of that

  1439. person,

  1440. or the

  1441. leadership

  1442. of the

  1443. church,

  1444. what

  1445. effect

  1446. will that

  1447. have on

  1448. the men

  1449. and the

  1450. women,

  1451. and particularly

  1452. the boys

  1453. and girls

  1454. that are

  1455. hearing it

  1456. in the

  1457. family of

  1458. God,

  1459. because we

  1460. are all

  1461. responsible

  1462. for one

  1463. another.

  1464. We prepare

  1465. to serve

  1466. the church

  1467. in this

  1468. way.

  1469. There's

  1470. nothing here

  1471. about saving

  1472. yourself,

  1473. is there?

  1474. It is all

  1475. about being

  1476. like your

  1477. father who

  1478. is in

  1479. heaven,

  1480. and like

  1481. the Lord

  1482. Jesus who

  1483. goes out

  1484. looking for

  1485. lost ones

  1486. so that

  1487. they may

  1488. be restored.

  1489. And that

  1490. is the

  1491. goal in

  1492. all of

  1493. this,

  1494. that we

  1495. would live

  1496. happily

  1497. together in

  1498. the fellowship

  1499. of God's

  1500. church.

  1501. You might

  1502. have been a

  1503. Christian a

  1504. long time,

  1505. you might

  1506. have been

  1507. in church

  1508. here for

  1509. a long

  1510. time.

  1511. Some of

  1512. us have

  1513. been in

  1514. church

  1515. leadership

  1516. for a

  1517. long

  1518. time.

  1519. And I

  1520. think you

  1521. will be

  1522. aware,

  1523. if you

  1524. have been

  1525. in

  1526. leadership

  1527. for any

  1528. length of

  1529. time,

  1530. that this

  1531. instruction of

  1532. the Lord

  1533. Jesus is

  1534. more complicated

  1535. than at

  1536. first it

  1537. appears.

  1538. And I

  1539. want to

  1540. finish here.

  1541. What sins

  1542. is the

  1543. Lord talking

  1544. about?

  1545. What sins

  1546. are we to

  1547. confront our

  1548. brother and

  1549. sister about?

  1550. After all,

  1551. you and I

  1552. are sinning

  1553. all the time.

  1554. We sin by

  1555. things we

  1556. do,

  1557. don't we?

  1558. And we

  1559. sin by

  1560. things that

  1561. we shouldn't

  1562. do.

  1563. There's a

  1564. world of

  1565. sinning in

  1566. the Christian

  1567. life.

  1568. And so

  1569. in the

  1570. Christian

  1571. church,

  1572. there are

  1573. times when

  1574. the New

  1575. Testament

  1576. tells us

  1577. to patiently

  1578. endure and

  1579. not to

  1580. confront.

  1581. Paul tells

  1582. us that

  1583. there were

  1584. sins of

  1585. thought and

  1586. of life

  1587. in his

  1588. churches that

  1589. he closed

  1590. his eyes

  1591. to and

  1592. he patiently

  1593. with reflective

  1594. attention

  1595. all with

  1596. them.

  1597. He was

  1598. patient.

  1599. There was

  1600. a good

  1601. bit of

  1602. his own

  1603. sinning that

  1604. as far

  1605. as we

  1606. know was

  1607. never made

  1608. a point of

  1609. confronting

  1610. with

  1611. believers.

  1612. When does

  1613. the sin

  1614. reach the

  1615. point that

  1616. we need

  1617. to confront

  1618. it?

  1619. And there

  1620. are judgments

  1621. that are to

  1622. be made

  1623. with the

  1624. Christian

  1625. conscience.

  1626. And then

  1627. the question

  1628. comes this,

  1629. are all

  1630. situations

  1631. meant to be

  1632. handled like

  1633. this?

  1634. if you

  1635. are to

  1636. read

  1637. accounts of

  1638. church

  1639. discipline

  1640. and church

  1641. courts

  1642. or in

  1643. cases of

  1644. church

  1645. discipline

  1646. as I

  1647. have to

  1648. sometimes

  1649. this is

  1650. what I

  1651. found

  1652. that over

  1653. and over

  1654. again

  1655. the

  1656. offender

  1657. uses this

  1658. line,

  1659. uses this

  1660. excuse.

  1661. It's almost

  1662. a mantra.

  1663. I was with

  1664. someone this

  1665. week that

  1666. said to me

  1667. they didn't

  1668. follow Matthew

  1669. 18.

  1670. And Matthew

  1671. 18 is

  1672. often a

  1673. technicality

  1674. and a

  1675. loophole.

  1676. And many

  1677. through the

  1678. years have

  1679. used,

  1680. they didn't

  1681. follow Matthew

  1682. 18 as

  1683. a mantra

  1684. to escape

  1685. punishment.

  1686. They get

  1687. off on a

  1688. technicality.

  1689. You didn't

  1690. use Matthew

  1691. 18.

  1692. And I

  1693. think we

  1694. have to admit

  1695. this,

  1696. but it's

  1697. seen that

  1698. this isn't

  1699. as straightforward

  1700. as sometimes

  1701. it's

  1702. played out.

  1703. If you

  1704. just applied

  1705. Matthew

  1706. 18 it would

  1707. all be

  1708. okay.

  1709. It's more

  1710. complicated

  1711. than that.

  1712. But the

  1713. fact is

  1714. this,

  1715. I think

  1716. by understanding

  1717. the context

  1718. of the

  1719. chapter we

  1720. see that

  1721. Jesus is

  1722. not dealing

  1723. here with

  1724. case law.

  1725. He's not

  1726. giving up an

  1727. ABC setup.

  1728. He is

  1729. talking about

  1730. helping his

  1731. little ones.

  1732. He's talking

  1733. about recovering

  1734. those of his

  1735. sheep who've

  1736. gone astray,

  1737. like one sheep

  1738. in the flock of

  1739. hundreds.

  1740. He's not

  1741. a lawyer

  1742. here laying

  1743. down procedures

  1744. so that

  1745. everyone gets

  1746. the same

  1747. treatment.

  1748. He's certainly

  1749. not enlisting

  1750. you as a

  1751. disciple to

  1752. become an

  1753. informer on

  1754. your other

  1755. disciples.

  1756. He is a

  1757. shepherd wanting

  1758. to make sure

  1759. that his

  1760. sheep learn

  1761. to care for

  1762. one another,

  1763. like he cares

  1764. for them.

  1765. Sheep go

  1766. astray,

  1767. and what is

  1768. the best way

  1769. to find them

  1770. and bring them

  1771. back to safety?

  1772. That's Jesus'

  1773. concern here.

  1774. And the best

  1775. way is

  1776. the gentlest

  1777. way,

  1778. the least

  1779. embarrassing

  1780. way,

  1781. the way

  1782. most considerate

  1783. of another

  1784. person's

  1785. feelings,

  1786. the way

  1787. that makes

  1788. it easiest

  1789. for a

  1790. Christian

  1791. who's

  1792. stumbled

  1793. to get

  1794. back on

  1795. his feet.

  1796. And so

  1797. if your

  1798. brother or

  1799. sister sins

  1800. against you,

  1801. go.

  1802. Go and

  1803. tell them

  1804. their fault,

  1805. but do it

  1806. with the

  1807. heart of

  1808. the Father.

  1809. On the

  1810. heart of

  1811. the Son,

  1812. let's pray.

  1813. Amen.
