  1. Acts chapter 4, it really is from verses 23 onwards, I think it's the first prayer recorded in Acts.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  2. ! It's the first major crisis certainly. Peter and John have been imprisoned, they've been threatened, they've been warned to stop preaching in the name of Christ.

  3. And then verse 23, when they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them, and when they heard it, they lifted up their voices together to God.

  4. And the substance of this prayer, as someone has described, really is the basic conviction of the whole Bible.

  5. I think it is probably the central theme of the whole Bible, and that is the conviction that God is sovereign.

  6. And that he reigns, and he rules as king and as lord over the whole universe that he's created.

  7. And that he sits today on the throne.

  8. And that God exercises absolute sovereign control over the whole created order, and over the whole historical process.

  9. And that is the conviction that underlies this prayer, and I want to argue truly undergirds the whole teaching of the Bible.

  10. It is indeed, in many ways, the central Christian conviction.

  11. That God our Saviour reigns enthroned in glory.

  12. And so the prayer begins, doesn't it, in verse 24, sovereign Lord.

  13. That is the conviction that God is on the throne, and that he is overruling even the wrath of his enemies that we've seen at the start of chapter 4.

  14. He's overruling even the wrath of his enemies to his own purpose.

  15. And that was vital, wasn't it, for the apostles to understand at that particular stage.

  16. But it's equally vital for you and I to understand it.

  17. It is the answer, isn't it, to one of the basic questions of the human heart.

  18. Francis Schaeffer says that this question grumbles under the skin of every thinking man.

  19. The question of to whom does ultimate power belong.

  20. Is there any controlling hand on the apparent madness of the world in which we live?

  21. When you look at history with all the seeming chaos and confusion and foolishness.

  22. Is it possible that there is a sovereign hand controlling everything?

  23. In the history of this world.

  24. Or personally, is this the answer to the question that burns in all our hearts, sometimes more acutely than at other times.

  25. Is it really true that God is working all things together for good to those who love him?

  26. Is God really sovereign over my personal circumstances today, right now?

  27. And they are crucial questions.

  28. And they are answered by two questions addressed to God in verse 24.

  29. Sovereign Lord, they call him.

  30. And the rest of this prayer in Acts 4 is really an extension of that conviction.

  31. The apostles take everything that is contained in those two words, sovereign Lord, and they unpack it.

  32. And they do so in four ways.

  33. First of all, do you see the sovereign Lord of creation?

  34. Look at verse 24.

  35. Sovereign Lord who made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything through them.

  36. And then they address God as the sovereign Lord of history.

  37. Verse 25.

  38. Who through the mouth of our father David said by the Holy Spirit,

  39. Why did the Gentiles rage and the people's plot in vain?

  40. The kings of the earth have set themselves and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed.

  41. They are speaking of God's sovereign rule in history.

  42. And thirdly, they address God as the sovereign Lord of redemption.

  43. Look at verses 27 and 28.

  44. For truly in this city they were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus,

  45. whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, among the Gentiles and the people of Israel,

  46. to do whatever your hand and your plan would have predestined to take place.

  47. And finally in verses 29 to 30, you see the sovereign Lord of the contemporary scene.

  48. And now Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants and continue to speak your word with all boldness

  49. while you stretch out your hand to heal.

  50. And signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

  51. God is the sovereign Lord above all things.

  52. And that is the conviction that lies behind all true Christian prayer.

  53. And when we come to God and we wait on him and we pray to him and cry to him as these men did in Acts 4,

  54. the basic conviction we have is as we plead with God in such a situation or in any situation,

  55. it's that God reigns sovereignly over all the affairs of men and of nations,

  56. of heaven and earth and hell.

  57. And we come to him on that basis.

  58. As the sovereign Lord so that we might think aright and live aright and pray aright.

  59. So first of all, the sovereign Lord of creation, verse 24.

  60. Sovereign Lord who made the heaven and earth and the sea and everything in them.

  61. That's the first thing that persuades these apostles of God's unlimited power and sovereignty.

  62. They are persuaded of his sovereignty when they look at God's acts in creation.

  63. Here they are in the midst of a situation where fear is entered into their hearts.

  64. Obviously by reason of the opposition that they've experienced.

  65. The threats are still sounding in their ears.

  66. And what they're saying now as they come to plead with God,

  67. they are reminding themselves that God is sovereign in creation.

  68. They say you are the Lord who's formed this universe in which we live.

  69. You've given life and breath to these very men that are our enemies.

  70. You are the Lord who keeps them alive.

  71. You are the Lord who's made all that is and that enables them to plead with God.

  72. And to press him concerning their particular need.

  73. It's one of the great basis of our thinking about God.

  74. That he is the sovereign Lord of creation.

  75. And if he has the power to create the heavens and earth,

  76. then he is able to act in your situation.

  77. And you are able to go and say to him,

  78. look upon us now Lord.

  79. You see creation is presented in the Bible as a sovereign act of God.

  80. He speaks as kingly creator.

  81. And he brings into being out of nothing all that is made.

  82. That's why the doctrine of creation is so vital for us in our understanding of God,

  83. in our thinking about the world,

  84. and in our thinking about prayer.

  85. The whole doctrine of creation is fundamental in its importance for us.

  86. Because again and again,

  87. this is the argument that people in the Bible use when they come into God's presence.

  88. To plead with him again and again.

  89. So let's go to Jeremiah chapter 32.

    Jeremiah 32 chapter mention

  90. We're going to go to a couple of passages tonight.

  91. As I said, I haven't got page numbers.

  92. So Jeremiah 32.

  93. It's a big book right in the middle of the Bible.

  94. Don't be embarrassed if you can't find it.

  95. Jeremiah chapter 32.

    Jeremiah 32 chapter mention

  96. Okay?

  97. Jeremiah 32.

  98. And they come to God and they plead with God.

  99. As for God who is first sovereign in creation.

  100. And so Jeremiah, this great prophet,

  101. he cries to the Lord in 32 and verses 16 to 20.

  102. He says,

  103. Our pride given the deed of purchase to Barak the son of Neriah,

  104. I prayed to the Lord saying,

  105. Our Lord God,

  106. it is you who made the heavens and the earth by your great power

  107. and by your outstretched arm.

  108. Nothing is too hard for you.

  109. You should steadfast love to thousands,

  110. but you repay the guilt of fathers,

  111. their children after them.

  112. O great and mighty God,

  113. whose name is the Lord of hosts,

  114. great in counsel,

  115. and mighty in deed,

  116. whose eyes are open to all the ways of the children of man,

  117. rewarding each one according to his ways

  118. and according to the fruit of his deeds.

  119. You have shown signs and wonders in the land of Egypt

  120. to this day in Israel and among all mankind

  121. and have made a name for yourself as this day.

  122. Now do you see how this vision of God that he has

  123. as the sovereign Lord who has called creation into being,

  124. it makes such a difference, doesn't it,

  125. to people thinking.

  126. But it's not only used by people as an argument

  127. as they plead with God,

  128. it is used by God as an argument

  129. to persuade his people to trust him.

  130. So if you remember in Isaiah,

  131. the prophecy of Isaiah,

  132. God comes to his people who are,

  133. they are wilting in the midst of all the difficulties

  134. and tribulations

  135. through which he passed

  136. and he says to them,

  137. lift up your eyes on high and see.

  138. What is it that they're to see?

  139. It's Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  140. Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  141. What vision is it that

  142. Isaiah longs that they might have?

  143. It's Isaiah 40 verses 25 to 28.

    Isaiah 40:25–28

  144. To whom will you compare me?

  145. That I should be like him,

  146. says the Holy One.

  147. Lift up your eyes on high

  148. and see who created these.

  149. He who brings out their hosts by number,

  150. calling them all by name,

  151. by the greatness of his might.

  152. And because he is strong in power,

  153. not one is missing.

  154. Why do you say, O Jacob,

  155. and speak, O Israel,

  156. my way is hidden from the Lord

  157. and my right is disregarded by my God?

  158. Have you not known?

  159. Have you not heard?

  160. The Lord is the everlasting God,

  161. the creator of the ends of the earth.

  162. Now do you see what God is doing?

  163. He's using the doctrine of creation

  164. and his sovereignty in creation

  165. to persuade his people to trust him.

  166. Now here's what the apostles are doing

  167. when they come into God's presence

  168. and you'll see how immensely relevant

  169. all of this is

  170. to the mood of so many of us today.

  171. We're so easily, secretly despondent

  172. and discouraged.

  173. So many of us are bowed down

  174. and weighed down.

  175. And in a sense,

  176. we're always on the defensive.

  177. And so we greatly need in our generation

  178. an opening of our eyes

  179. to see the great glory

  180. and the majesty of God as the creator.

  181. There's an awesomeness, isn't there,

  182. to creation that does us good.

  183. And so go to the lake district

  184. and stand on the hills

  185. and look at them.

  186. Go to South Wales.

  187. See the valleys.

  188. Stand on the beach

  189. and look at the sea.

  190. I don't know what it is that does it for you.

  191. That's what does it for me.

  192. You stand and you look at the power of the sea.

  193. And there will be times

  194. when you will feel your soul exalted.

  195. And God means us to do that.

  196. To find our hearts lifted up

  197. with a sense of the sheer majesty of God

  198. who by his word

  199. has called all of this into being.

  200. And I tell you what I think

  201. that the kingly Lord

  202. who created that infinite beauty

  203. is the same God

  204. who is setting about his purpose

  205. of creating in me,

  206. of creating Christ in me.

  207. Well that is a great encouragement, isn't it?

  208. Francis Schaeffer again said

  209. our generation has a unique capacity

  210. of thinking great thoughts of men

  211. and petty thoughts of God.

  212. And so we need to see him

  213. as the sovereign Lord of creation.

  214. Secondly in verses 25 and 26 of Acts 4

  215. we need to see him

  216. as the sovereign Lord of history.

  217. And these two verses

  218. they are a quotation

  219. from Psalm 2.

  220. It's one of the most quoted psalms

  221. in the New Testament.

  222. And one commentator writes this.

  223. He says this psalm bears witness

  224. to a God who is present

  225. and active in world history.

  226. And who knows how to make himself

  227. respected

  228. by those who don't want to give it.

  229. And he accomplishes his purpose

  230. even though men rebel against him.

  231. The immediate picture of Psalm 2

  232. is there's a king

  233. and there's a king who is

  234. in his accession

  235. to the throne.

  236. An anointing of a new king.

  237. A king whom God has chosen

  238. as much property

  239. and David himself.

  240. And there's the rebellion

  241. of kings and the rulers

  242. of the earth

  243. against this earthly king.

  244. And that rebellion

  245. the psalmist sees

  246. actually is a rebellion

  247. against the Lord

  248. and against his anointage.

  249. And so the apostles

  250. they recollect this psalm

  251. and they interpret it correctly.

  252. The idea of the rage

  253. in nations

  254. and the vaunting

  255. of human beings

  256. against God

  257. is ludicrous.

  258. Because he who sits

  259. in the heavens

  260. will laugh at them.

  261. He will hold them

  262. in derision.

  263. The idea of man

  264. rebelling against

  265. the king of kings

  266. and lord of glories

  267. is ludicrous.

  268. Because the Lord

  269. is the one who reigns

  270. and whose government

  271. over the affairs

  272. of men and nations

  273. will be vindicated.

  274. Whatever the scene

  275. in the world

  276. whatever the rage

  277. of men against God

  278. however men

  279. choose to ignore him

  280. he who sits

  281. in the heavens

  282. will have the last word.

  283. And so to whom

  284. does ultimate power belong?

  285. I really hope

  286. you're clear on this.

  287. It does not reside

  288. in Washington

  289. or in London

  290. or in Moscow

  291. or in Beijing.

  292. It resides on the throne

  293. of the Lord God

  294. omnipotent

  295. on whose shoulders

  296. the government

  297. has been placed.

  298. Let me quote again

  299. from another commentator

  300. on the psalm.

  301. What the psalmist sees

  302. is that the centre

  303. of history

  304. is no longer

  305. the struggle

  306. of the great powers

  307. but God

  308. whose relationship

  309. with the earthly powers

  310. will determine

  311. their destiny.

  312. His vision of history

  313. is theocentric.

  314. And that's

  315. an unfamiliar word

  316. so we don't use

  317. that word very much

  318. but all it means

  319. is this

  320. that God

  321. is at the centre

  322. of history.

  323. How do you see that?

  324. And when you read

  325. at the BBC

  326. online

  327. when you watch

  328. the news

  329. and the chaos

  330. of Brexit

  331. do you see at all

  332. that God

  333. is at the centre

  334. of history

  335. of history

  336. God's

  337. this conviction

  338. of God's lordship

  339. of history

  340. in these two

  341. similar ways

  342. it is used

  343. by the people

  344. of God

  345. as a source

  346. of strength

  347. and a bullhook

  348. to their confidence

  349. in God

  350. so in 2 Chronicles 20

  351. I won't make you

  352. go there

  353. but Jehoshaphat

  354. the king

  355. he had news

  356. of the impending

  357. disaster

  358. that was about

  359. to come upon

  360. his people

  361. and as he saw

  362. the Moabites

  363. and the Ammonites

  364. coming upon them

  365. he heard words

  366. that there was

  367. a great multitude

  368. coming against you

  369. from Edom

  370. and Jehoshaphat

  371. feared

  372. and set himself

  373. to seek the Lord

  374. and Judah

  375. assembles

  376. to seek help

  377. from the Lord

  378. and Jehoshaphat

  379. stood in the assembly

  380. of Judah

  381. and Jerusalem

  382. and he cried out this

  383. he said

  384. O Lord

  385. God of our fathers

  386. are you not

  387. God in heaven

  388. you rule

  389. of the kingdoms

  390. of the nations

  391. in your hand

  392. are power

  393. and might

  394. so that none

  395. is able

  396. to withstand you

  397. and that is

  398. the conviction

  399. of a man

  400. who has come

  401. to see that

  402. ultimate power

  403. belongs to God

  404. not to men

  405. but again

  406. it's also used

  407. by God

  408. to persuade

  409. men and women

  410. to trust him

  411. and so you

  412. find again

  413. and again

  414. don't you

  415. when you read

  416. the Old Testament

  417. that God

  418. recalls history

  419. it's a significant

  420. thing

  421. and you find

  422. God doing that

  423. again and again

  424. and again

  425. God will say

  426. I am the God

  427. of Abraham

  428. and Isaac

  429. and Jacob

  430. I am the Lord

  431. your God

  432. who brought you

  433. out of the land

  434. of slavery

  435. and into the land

  436. of promise

  437. and he goes on

  438. to recount

  439. doesn't he to them

  440. how he has ordered

  441. their circumstances

  442. and how he has

  443. knocked aside

  444. their enemies

  445. and how he has

  446. cast down kings

  447. and men

  448. who rebel

  449. against him

  450. and opened a way

  451. for his people

  452. what's he doing

  453. he's not merely

  454. giving them

  455. a history lesson

  456. he's giving them

  457. a lesson

  458. in God's sovereignty

  459. in history

  460. and so therefore

  461. he appeals to them

  462. that now

  463. in this situation

  464. they will trust

  465. and obey him

  466. because he's

  467. the sovereign

  468. lord of history

  469. that's true

  470. in our personal

  471. history isn't it

  472. no one in the

  473. bible speaks

  474. as clearly

  475. or powerfully

  476. about this

  477. than Joseph does

  478. so his brothers

  479. come to him

  480. don't they

  481. when he's in Egypt

  482. right at the end

  483. of Genesis

  484. with their sorry

  485. story of treachery

  486. and cruelty

  487. and that begins

  488. to be poured out

  489. and they find out

  490. don't they

  491. that their sin

  492. well has been

  493. found out

  494. and Joseph

  495. looks at them

  496. and even as

  497. he speaks

  498. of that kind

  499. of experience

  500. in his life

  501. he says in

  502. Genesis 50

  503. you meant it

  504. for evil to me

  505. but God meant it

  506. for good

  507. do you see the point

  508. he had seen

  509. that God was not

  510. just the sovereign

  511. lord of history

  512. I can level up

  513. the hair

  514. in general

  515. but he is the

  516. sovereign lord

  517. of history

  518. personally

  519. and that leads

  520. us to the third

  521. way they address

  522. God

  523. he's not only

  524. sovereign lord

  525. of creation

  526. and of history

  527. but he's also

  528. the sovereign lord

  529. of redemption

  530. look at verses 27

  531. and 28

  532. because the apostle

  533. looks at Psalm 2

  534. and he sees that

  535. it's a messianic

  536. psalm

  537. that it's about

  538. Christ

  539. they believed

  540. that the psalmist

  541. sang better than

  542. he knew

  543. and more than

  544. he thought

  545. but what was he

  546. singing about

  547. he was really

  548. singing about

  549. the exalted

  550. king of kings

  551. and lord of lords

  552. the lord Jesus

  553. Christ

  554. against whom

  555. the nations

  556. of the earth

  557. still rage

  558. and they would

  559. plot and

  560. divide

  561. his downfall

  562. and so we

  563. move from

  564. history in

  565. general

  566. to the

  567. history of

  568. redemption

  569. in particular

  570. and here

  571. above

  572. everywhere else

  573. they see

  574. God

  575. turning the

  576. wrath of

  577. men to

  578. praise him

  579. and to

  580. bless us

  581. verse 27

  582. for truly

  583. in this city

  584. this place

  585. where we are

  586. they were

  587. gathered

  588. together

  589. against

  590. your holy

  591. servant

  592. Jesus

  593. whom they

  594. anointed

  595. whom you

  596. anointed

  597. and both

  598. Herod and

  599. Pondis

  600. Pilate along

  601. with the

  602. Gentiles and

  603. the people

  604. of Israel

  605. to do

  606. whatever your

  607. hand and

  608. your plan

  609. are predestined

  610. to take

  611. place

  612. he shuts

  613. the scene

  614. he says

  615. this is the

  616. stage of

  617. where it

  618. happened

  619. where the

  620. lord Jesus

  621. was brought

  622. to trial

  623. and judgment

  624. now what

  625. was really

  626. happening

  627. there

  628. this is

  629. what the

  630. apostles

  631. are grasping

  632. and they

  633. are leading

  634. us into

  635. the sovereignty

  636. of God

  637. in our

  638. redemption

  639. what was

  640. happening

  641. in Jerusalem

  642. when Jesus

  643. died

  644. is it to be

  645. explained by

  646. Herod and

  647. Pontius Pilate

  648. and the people

  649. of Israel

  650. and the Gentiles

  651. and the raging

  652. of men

  653. and the gnashing

  654. of teeth

  655. and the anger

  656. of the crowd

  657. and the cruelty

  658. of the Roman

  659. soldiers

  660. is that how

  661. it's all to be

  662. explained

  663. just a tragic

  664. miscarriage

  665. justice

  666. knowing Jesus

  667. listen

  668. he says

  669. verse 27

  670. he says

  671. to do whatever

  672. your hand and

  673. your plan

  674. predestined

  675. to take place

  676. doesn't mean

  677. that God

  678. was the author

  679. of wickedness

  680. and evil

  681. what it means

  682. is this

  683. that God

  684. rules in the

  685. midst

  686. of his

  687. enemies

  688. and when

  689. they do

  690. their wicked

  691. will

  692. they are

  693. fulfilling

  694. his purpose

  695. when they do

  696. their wicked

  697. worst

  698. they are

  699. mere tools

  700. for his

  701. high and

  702. blessed

  703. purpose

  704. and that's

  705. what's happening

  706. at Calvary

  707. it's not that

  708. men have done

  709. this

  710. it's that

  711. God

  712. gave him

  713. up

  714. and the

  715. initiative

  716. in all

  717. that was

  718. happening

  719. there on

  720. Calvary

  721. was God's

  722. they are

  723. saying

  724. aren't they

  725. Lord it

  726. was you

  727. sovereign

  728. Lord who

  729. was presiding

  730. at Golgotha

  731. the real

  732. king was

  733. Jesus

  734. and Jesus

  735. brings this

  736. home

  737. doesn't he

  738. to Pilate

  739. do you

  740. remember how

  741. little

  742. Pontius

  743. find us

  744. full of his

  745. own self

  746. importance

  747. and full of

  748. his own

  749. authority

  750. he trots

  751. around in

  752. front of

  753. Jesus

  754. and he

  755. says

  756. do you

  757. not know

  758. I have

  759. power to

  760. release you

  761. and power

  762. to crucify

  763. you

  764. I would

  765. love

  766. to have

  767. seen his

  768. face

  769. wouldn't

  770. you

  771. when Jesus

  772. says to him

  773. you have

  774. no power

  775. over me

  776. except it

  777. was given

  778. you by

  779. God

  780. and Pilate

  781. and Herod

  782. and the

  783. people of

  784. Israel

  785. and the

  786. Gentiles

  787. and the

  788. Roman

  789. soldiers

  790. they are

  791. instruments

  792. of God's

  793. infinite

  794. grace

  795. in the

  796. glorious

  797. plan of

  798. redemption

  799. but it

  800. encompassed

  801. some of

  802. the darkest

  803. hours of

  804. human history

  805. and I guess

  806. that's what

  807. these

  808. apostles are

  809. saying

  810. it is

  811. out of

  812. that

  813. infinite

  814. darkness

  815. that God

  816. could bring

  817. our full

  818. salvation

  819. and what

  820. might he

  821. not bring

  822. out of

  823. this hour

  824. and our

  825. struggles

  826. at this

  827. time

  828. and that

  829. speaks to

  830. us of

  831. God's

  832. sovereignty

  833. in accomplishing

  834. our

  835. redemption

  836. scripture

  837. also tells

  838. us that

  839. God is

  840. sovereign

  841. in applying

  842. redemption

  843. as well

  844. and that

  845. is a

  846. glorious

  847. kind of

  848. authority

  849. and motivation

  850. we have

  851. in evangelism

  852. that it

  853. is God

  854. who is

  855. drawing

  856. people

  857. to

  858. Christ

  859. that it

  860. is God

  861. who is

  862. the author

  863. of salvation

  864. that it

  865. is God

  866. who prepares

  867. people's

  868. hearts

  869. and I'm

  870. sure it

  871. was a new

  872. vision of

  873. that that

  874. gave these

  875. men heart

  876. to go out

  877. and with

  878. great power

  879. we read

  880. in verse

  881. 33

  882. great power

  883. the apostles

  884. were giving

  885. their testimony

  886. to the

  887. resurrection

  888. of the Lord

  889. Jesus

  890. and great

  891. grace was

  892. upon them

  893. all

  894. sovereign

  895. lord over

  896. creation

  897. over history

  898. over redemption

  899. and finally

  900. let's see

  901. sovereign lord

  902. over the

  903. contemporary

  904. scene

  905. it's not

  906. merely true

  907. of the past

  908. is it

  909. it's not

  910. something they

  911. look back on

  912. as a kind of

  913. curious freak

  914. of history

  915. it's the most

  916. relevant reality

  917. for the

  918. contemporary

  919. situation

  920. in which

  921. they find

  922. themselves

  923. and it

  924. is for

  925. us

  926. this

  927. evening

  928. and so

  929. they say

  930. now lord

  931. look upon

  932. our

  933. present

  934. situation

  935. and on

  936. account of

  937. your

  938. sovereign

  939. lordship

  940. in creation

  941. and history

  942. and redemption

  943. look upon

  944. our present

  945. situation

  946. and grant

  947. your servants

  948. boldness

  949. to speak

  950. your word

  951. and stretch

  952. out your

  953. hand

  954. to heal

  955. and signs

  956. and wonders

  957. because the

  958. character of

  959. God does

  960. not change

  961. they may

  962. now appeal

  963. to him

  964. for their

  965. present

  966. situation

  967. this is the

  968. God who is

  969. not the

  970. great I

  971. was

  972. but the

  973. great I

  974. am

  975. he is

  976. the unchanging

  977. God who is

  978. in sovereign

  979. control

  980. who is able

  981. to touch

  982. the present

  983. situation

  984. of his

  985. children's

  986. lives

  987. and to

  988. bring them

  989. into that

  990. glorious

  991. assurance

  992. that here

  993. is a

  994. God who

  995. does all

  996. things

  997. well

  998. and so

  999. what I

  1000. want to do

  1001. is I

  1002. want to

  1003. close and

  1004. I want to

  1005. give you

  1006. three words

  1007. this week

  1008. which I

  1009. think are

  1010. the application

  1011. of the

  1012. doctrine of

  1013. the sovereignty

  1014. of God

  1015. that help

  1016. us in our

  1017. own lives

  1018. three words

  1019. that we

  1020. need to

  1021. ask God

  1022. to write

  1023. on our

  1024. hearts

  1025. from this

  1026. passage

  1027. and from

  1028. this

  1029. doctrine

  1030. the first

  1031. is rest

  1032. do you

  1033. see the

  1034. significant

  1035. thing is

  1036. that because

  1037. God

  1038. reigns

  1039. we may

  1040. rest

  1041. in him

  1042. and we

  1043. may rest

  1044. in his

  1045. wisdom

  1046. and in

  1047. his

  1048. power

  1049. and in

  1050. his

  1051. sovereignty

  1052. Jeremiah

  1053. says in

  1054. his prayer

  1055. doesn't he

  1056. there is

  1057. nothing

  1058. too hard

  1059. for you

  1060. and so

  1061. we may

  1062. therefore

  1063. rest

  1064. in God

  1065. the

  1066. sovereignty

  1067. of God

  1068. is the

  1069. doctrine

  1070. above all

  1071. else

  1072. which brings

  1073. rest

  1074. into the

  1075. hearts

  1076. and minds

  1077. of believers

  1078. I was at a

  1079. minister's

  1080. conference once

  1081. and he said

  1082. to me

  1083. he was

  1084. berating

  1085. ministers

  1086. that don't

  1087. take a

  1088. day off

  1089. and he

  1090. says it's

  1091. an extraordinary

  1092. thing how

  1093. we have

  1094. the view

  1095. that the

  1096. almighty

  1097. is incapable

  1098. of looking

  1099. after his

  1100. cause

  1101. while we

  1102. take a

  1103. day off

  1104. and it's

  1105. an amazing

  1106. thing isn't

  1107. it how we

  1108. can find a

  1109. lack of

  1110. rest and

  1111. what is

  1112. behind that

  1113. is because

  1114. we have a

  1115. lack of

  1116. confidence in

  1117. God's

  1118. absolute

  1119. sovereign

  1120. control

  1121. it's like

  1122. when you

  1123. go on

  1124. holiday and

  1125. you say to

  1126. the person

  1127. who's driving

  1128. do you

  1129. mind if I

  1130. sleep

  1131. while you

  1132. watch the

  1133. road

  1134. while you

  1135. drive

  1136. it's like

  1137. we imagine

  1138. God needs

  1139. us to

  1140. kind of

  1141. help us

  1142. to keep

  1143. our eye

  1144. on things

  1145. for him

  1146. in all

  1147. kind of

  1148. circumstances

  1149. we need

  1150. to learn

  1151. what it

  1152. is to

  1153. rest in

  1154. the

  1155. Lord

  1156. because

  1157. he is

  1158. the

  1159. sovereign

  1160. one

  1161. second

  1162. word is

  1163. hope

  1164. hope

  1165. and this

  1166. is what

  1167. transformed

  1168. the attitude

  1169. of the

  1170. apostles

  1171. in the

  1172. early

  1173. church

  1174. and they

  1175. were

  1176. overwhelmed

  1177. they were

  1178. outnumbered

  1179. certainly

  1180. and it

  1181. seemed

  1182. that there

  1183. was nothing

  1184. but despair

  1185. it's

  1186. precisely

  1187. the same

  1188. sense in

  1189. the modern

  1190. world

  1191. secular

  1192. society

  1193. and secular

  1194. men and

  1195. women and

  1196. boys and

  1197. girls are

  1198. obsessed with

  1199. despair

  1200. for all the

  1201. nonsense of

  1202. believing in

  1203. yourself

  1204. there's very

  1205. very little

  1206. hope in

  1207. our world

  1208. why is that

  1209. well it's

  1210. because they

  1211. do not know

  1212. God

  1213. and it's

  1214. because they're

  1215. blind to the

  1216. fact that

  1217. our God

  1218. reigns in

  1219. glory

  1220. and ultimate

  1221. power belongs

  1222. to him

  1223. and you and

  1224. I need to

  1225. live in the

  1226. light of that

  1227. solid glorious

  1228. hope

  1229. it's not the

  1230. kind of hope

  1231. that has

  1232. doubt attached

  1233. to it

  1234. I hope it's

  1235. a sunny day

  1236. next Saturday

  1237. for the

  1238. barbecue

  1239. but we know

  1240. full well it

  1241. might not be

  1242. but the

  1243. confidence of

  1244. the hope of

  1245. the gospel

  1246. is certain

  1247. and there's

  1248. this is true

  1249. of personal

  1250. life too

  1251. isn't it

  1252. because the

  1253. sovereign

  1254. control of

  1255. God upon

  1256. the lives

  1257. of his

  1258. people too

  1259. is such

  1260. that all

  1261. things work

  1262. together

  1263. for the

  1264. good of

  1265. those who

  1266. love him

  1267. so do you

  1268. believe

  1269. that this

  1270. evening

  1271. do you

  1272. believe that

  1273. there's not

  1274. an area of

  1275. your life

  1276. not an

  1277. atom of

  1278. your experience

  1279. which God

  1280. is not

  1281. controlling

  1282. altogether

  1283. for your

  1284. good and

  1285. his glory

  1286. there may

  1287. be very

  1288. difficult

  1289. things in

  1290. your life

  1291. and there

  1292. may be a

  1293. family situation

  1294. which you're

  1295. finding very

  1296. difficult

  1297. there may

  1298. be enormous

  1299. health concerns

  1300. you may be

  1301. very very

  1302. unhappy in

  1303. work at the

  1304. moment

  1305. but there's

  1306. not an area

  1307. of your life

  1308. not an atom

  1309. of your

  1310. experience

  1311. which God

  1312. is not

  1313. controlling

  1314. together for

  1315. your good

  1316. and his

  1317. glory

  1318. that's what

  1319. this doctrine

  1320. implies

  1321. rest

  1322. hope

  1323. and then the

  1324. last thing is

  1325. obedience

  1326. God's

  1327. kingly rule

  1328. is always

  1329. personal

  1330. and the

  1331. sovereignty

  1332. of God

  1333. is not a

  1334. doctrine

  1335. to be held

  1336. in isolation

  1337. from a

  1338. servant's

  1339. obedience

  1340. we may

  1341. not claim

  1342. in a kind

  1343. of critical

  1344. abstract

  1345. clinical

  1346. theoretical

  1347. sense

  1348. the primary

  1349. aim of this

  1350. doctrine

  1351. is upon

  1352. the glad

  1353. bowing

  1354. of every

  1355. area of

  1356. life

  1357. before him

  1358. as king

  1359. of lord

  1360. crown him

  1361. the lord

  1362. of life

  1363. and if

  1364. rest and
