  1. Well, you've got to be careful what you throw away, haven't you?

  2. Lest you throw away more than you thought you had.

  3. The story goes of a couple in Las Vegas

  4. who were queuing for too long

  5. so they unwittingly tore up the winning lottery ticket

  6. !

  7. and bought an instant scratch card instead.

  8. The ticket would have been worth $900,000.

  9. And then a cleaner who was working in a modern art gallery

  10. came across an art installation by the modern artist Paul Branca.

  11. It looked like a couple of dustbins in the corner of the room.

  12. That's no comment on modern art.

  13. But she assumed it was literal rubbish

  14. and got rid of it.

  15. And it would have been worth an absolute fortune.

  16. Or then there's the person who took an old computer

  17. they found in their attic, took it to the local dump

  18. and threw it in a skip.

  19. They later discovered that it was one of Apple Corporation's originals

  20. made by Steve Jobs himself.

  21. And it was worth at least $200,000.

  22. You have got to be careful what you throw away

  23. and what you discard.

  24. Lest you throw away more than you thought you had.

  25. And in this passage that we read today

  26. Jesus is concerned that his listeners do not make the same mistake with him

  27. and with his message

  28. of throwing away somebody who is worth more than they know.

  29. In this section in John 12

  30. we're in between the two main parts of John's Gospel.

  31. It's separated into two halves.

  32. And this is the interval in between those two halves.

  33. The first half deals with the three years of Jesus' public ministry.

  34. The second half deals with the last four days of his life.

  35. And we're told, aren't we, in the interval

  36. that Jesus' listeners have thrown him out.

  37. They've rejected him.

  38. And so Jesus here, he wants to make one last

  39. proclamation to them.

  40. These are Jesus' last parting words

  41. before he removes himself from them

  42. in his public ministry.

  43. John tells us in verse 44

  44. he cries out

  45. to the people who've rejected him.

  46. It just shows his patience, doesn't it?

  47. And his compassion

  48. for people who have turned their backs on him

  49. who reject his wonderful message and his work.

  50. That he doesn't finish the relationship

  51. with one last jab at them

  52. with a witty retort

  53. that have put them in their place.

  54. He is still, even now,

  55. seeking to give skeptics one last chance

  56. not to make the mistake of throwing him away

  57. and his message.

  58. And in these six verses here

  59. he sets out, really, a summary.

  60. It's his final sermon to them

  61. of what he is about

  62. and why skeptics should believe in him.

  63. And really, they are the core elements

  64. of his message

  65. and of what Jesus is about.

  66. And it's a really dense passage.

  67. It's difficult to know what to leave out.

  68. But I just want to highlight

  69. three positive things

  70. that Jesus tells them here.

  71. And we need to think as well, don't we,

  72. what Jesus is saying to us

  73. lest we throw out

  74. more than we thought we had in Jesus.

  75. So he says to them,

  76. don't reject me

  77. because to receive me,

  78. to believe in me

  79. is to believe in the one who sent me.

  80. That's the first thing.

  81. To believe in Jesus

  82. is to believe in the one

  83. who sent Jesus.

  84. Now most leaders we've seen in the world

  85. are people who appeal to us

  86. and they want our trust

  87. and they want our belief

  88. on the basis of their qualities,

  89. aren't they?

  90. They are better at this

  91. and they're good at that.

  92. They've got more YouTube subscribers

  93. or whatever.

  94. They are the reason

  95. to talk themselves up, aren't they?

  96. For our trust.

  97. But oddly,

  98. Jesus' appeal for belief and trust

  99. comes not in himself

  100. but in his relationship

  101. to somebody else.

  102. Did you see who that other person was?

  103. If you look at verse 44 again,

  104. whoever believes in me

  105. believes not in me

  106. but in him who sent me.

  107. It's very, very humble, isn't it?

  108. Jesus is not like many of the leaders.

  109. He's not in it for his own ego.

  110. He says,

  111. come to me

  112. and look at me

  113. so that you can find

  114. somebody else.

  115. He's not in it to build popularity

  116. for himself.

  117. Actually, he says,

  118. I am here

  119. so that you might know

  120. and believe in somebody else as well.

  121. Namely,

  122. in the one

  123. who sent him.

  124. He's saying, isn't it,

  125. that you need to receive

  126. Jesus,

  127. you need to trust in me

  128. because when you're doing that

  129. you're not just dealing

  130. with just me.

  131. I am not a man

  132. that you can take

  133. or leave

  134. in isolation.

  135. You don't deal with me

  136. simply as a man

  137. who knows a lot.

  138. I'm not simply

  139. an expert

  140. in the Jewish law.

  141. I'm not simply

  142. a wise and loving

  143. compassionate person.

  144. I'm not simply

  145. a good preacher

  146. or a good teacher.

  147. You're not even dealing

  148. with simply a man.

  149. But a man

  150. who has been sent

  151. by God

  152. the Father.

  153. And so you need

  154. to come to me

  155. because of my relationship

  156. to him,

  157. Jesus says.

  158. Now to use an illustration

  159. you might think of it

  160. a bit like

  161. a king

  162. sending an envoy

  163. to a different country

  164. or a land

  165. or sending

  166. an ambassador.

  167. And the way

  168. you treat

  169. the ambassador

  170. is the way

  171. you treat

  172. the sending king,

  173. isn't it?

  174. When you receive

  175. the ambassador

  176. you receive

  177. the sovereign

  178. that he represents.

  179. And so Jesus

  180. is making

  181. a unique claim.

  182. He is saying

  183. that I

  184. and my Father

  185. in heaven

  186. are so united

  187. and so closely

  188. related

  189. that when you

  190. treat one of us

  191. one way

  192. then the other one

  193. feels it too.

  194. When you believe

  195. in me

  196. and when you receive

  197. in me

  198. you receive

  199. not just me

  200. but my Father

  201. in heaven as well.

  202. Now that has

  203. implications for us

  204. doesn't it?

  205. Just imagine

  206. for a second

  207. if you can

  208. and the person

  209. who is searching

  210. for God

  211. and for meaning

  212. in life

  213. perhaps it's a person

  214. who wants to get

  215. to know their

  216. spiritual side

  217. I've got friends

  218. like that.

  219. A person

  220. asking the big

  221. questions

  222. like is there

  223. a God

  224. out there?

  225. And you can look

  226. into the world

  227. can't you

  228. and there are

  229. all sorts of

  230. answers around

  231. all sorts of

  232. cultures

  233. and religions

  234. that dress

  235. God up

  236. in different

  237. costumes

  238. and give

  239. different answers

  240. to the questions

  241. that people

  242. worship different

  243. kinds of gods

  244. don't they?

  245. Some people

  246. worship the sun

  247. or stars

  248. or ancestors

  249. or Allah

  250. or Buddha

  251. or they worship

  252. no gods at all.

  253. And so on your

  254. search for God

  255. you might go

  256. into the world

  257. you might travel

  258. the world

  259. you might go

  260. to China

  261. or India

  262. to visit some

  263. temples

  264. or you might

  265. go to the

  266. Wailing Wall

  267. in Jerusalem

  268. to find out

  269. who this

  270. God is

  271. who is out

  272. there somewhere.

  273. But the

  274. audacious claim

  275. that Jesus

  276. makes is that

  277. you don't need

  278. to do any

  279. of that

  280. and you don't

  281. need to listen

  282. to any of that

  283. at all

  284. to know God.

  285. Notice what

  286. he says in

  287. verse 45

  288. Whoever

  289. sees me

  290. sees him

  291. who sent me.

  292. So actually

  293. the illustration

  294. of the ambassador

  295. is a bit

  296. weak really

  297. because Jesus

  298. is claiming

  299. here to be

  300. much much

  301. more than

  302. just the

  303. messenger boy.

  304. He is saying

  305. I am the

  306. embodiment

  307. of this God.

  308. The God

  309. that you

  310. cannot ordinarily

  311. see

  312. is now made

  313. visible to you

  314. in me.

  315. I am more

  316. than just a

  317. messenger boy.

  318. I am the

  319. one who

  320. allows you

  321. to see

  322. the unseeable

  323. God.

  324. But just

  325. pause to

  326. ask what

  327. that actually

  328. means.

  329. I received

  330. a note in

  331. the post

  332. a while ago

  333. it was a

  334. sales leaflet

  335. advertising

  336. a statue

  337. of Jesus

  338. Christ that

  339. they wanted

  340. me to buy

  341. and put on

  342. my shelf

  343. at home.

  344. And the

  345. company that

  346. was selling

  347. these statues

  348. thought they

  349. had worked

  350. out what

  351. Jesus of

  352. Nazareth

  353. looked like

  354. using

  355. records and

  356. things.

  357. And so

  358. they made

  359. a representation

  360. out of

  361. stone so

  362. that I

  363. could see

  364. Jesus'

  365. face and

  366. kind of be

  367. inspired by

  368. it.

  369. Now is that

  370. what Jesus

  371. means when

  372. he says

  373. when you

  374. see me

  375. you see

  376. the Father?

  377. I don't

  378. think it

  379. is.

  380. Because the

  381. way that

  382. Jesus reveals

  383. himself is

  384. not through

  385. pictures and

  386. images and

  387. statues but

  388. through words.

  389. John ends

  390. his gospel

  391. doesn't he

  392. not by

  393. saying these

  394. things are

  395. painted or

  396. drawn or

  397. sculptured but

  398. he says these

  399. things are

  400. written that

  401. you may believe

  402. in Jesus.

  403. And actually

  404. the whole

  405. Bible is

  406. written so

  407. that we can

  408. see who

  409. Jesus is.

  410. That we can

  411. see what

  412. he is like

  413. as a person.

  414. We can learn

  415. about his

  416. character and

  417. his ways.

  418. His

  419. sovereignty,

  420. his

  421. compassion,

  422. his

  423. justice.

  424. He wants

  425. us to do

  426. more than

  427. simply

  428. recognise a

  429. picture but

  430. to get to

  431. know a

  432. person.

  433. And as we

  434. do that, as

  435. we see him

  436. and get to

  437. know him in

  438. the scripture,

  439. in the Bible,

  440. we are getting

  441. to know this

  442. God who is

  443. behind everything.

  444. As the saying

  445. goes, like

  446. father, like

  447. son.

  448. God, like

  449. man.

  450. So you

  451. don't need to

  452. travel the

  453. world on a

  454. pilgrimage or

  455. read endless

  456. books on the

  457. religions of

  458. the world.

  459. You can come

  460. to know this

  461. God right now

  462. in Ealing.

  463. As you see

  464. Jesus in the

  465. pages of the

  466. Bible, you

  467. will find this

  468. God.

  469. The one true

  470. spiritual God

  471. who is behind

  472. everything.

  473. And so if you

  474. throw away

  475. Jesus, you are

  476. throwing him

  477. away more than

  478. you thought

  479. you had.

  480. It would be

  481. to throw away

  482. the only way

  483. of knowing the

  484. glory and

  485. wonder of the

  486. God who made

  487. the universe.

  488. It is to

  489. receive the

  490. one who sent

  491. him.

  492. So to believe

  493. in Jesus is

  494. to receive the

  495. father, to

  496. receive the

  497. God who sent

  498. him.

  499. But secondly,

  500. to believe in

  501. Jesus is to

  502. have light.

  503. This is the

  504. second thing he

  505. says to the

  506. skeptics.

  507. Look at verse

  508. 46.

  509. I have come

  510. into the

  511. world as

  512. light so

  513. that whoever

  514. believes in

  515. me may not

  516. remain in

  517. darkness.

  518. Now it's

  519. similar to

  520. something that

  521. he said earlier

  522. in John 8

  523. where he says

  524. I am the

  525. light of the

  526. world.

  527. Whoever

  528. follows me

  529. will not

  530. walk in

  531. darkness but

  532. will have

  533. the light

  534. of life.

  535. As you

  536. get to know

  537. me, Jesus

  538. says, you

  539. will get to

  540. know God

  541. and it

  542. will be

  543. like a

  544. light

  545. shining on

  546. your life.

  547. A light

  548. that enables

  549. you to do

  550. what you're

  551. meant to

  552. do as a

  553. human being

  554. and to

  555. not walk

  556. in darkness.

  557. The idea

  558. there is of

  559. everyday living

  560. and of

  561. walking,

  562. being a

  563. human.

  564. You'll

  565. know that

  566. we've got a

  567. seven-month-old

  568. at home at

  569. the moment.

  570. He's getting

  571. pretty good at

  572. night but he'll

  573. wake up and

  574. quite often

  575. it falls for

  576. me to try

  577. and calm

  578. him down.

  579. So I'll

  580. go in the

  581. room where

  582. he is and

  583. get his

  584. teddy, put

  585. his dummy

  586. in, move

  587. him around

  588. a bit, try

  589. and make

  590. him feel

  591. better.

  592. The only

  593. problem is

  594. when I go

  595. in the

  596. room it's

  597. always dark.

  598. We've got

  599. those black

  600. out blinds so

  601. it's pitch

  602. black in

  603. there.

  604. And if I

  605. try and do

  606. what I'm

  607. supposed to

  608. do in the

  609. dark it

  610. always goes

  611. very, very

  612. badly.

  613. I'll kick

  614. a toy and

  615. it'll make a

  616. noise, stub

  617. my toe on

  618. the chair

  619. leg, shove

  620. the dummy

  621. in his

  622. eye and

  623. I'll just

  624. be fumbling

  625. around.

  626. See when it

  627. is dark we

  628. cannot act

  629. confidently or

  630. appropriately can

  631. we in what

  632. we're supposed

  633. to be doing.

  634. And Jesus is

  635. saying here the

  636. same goes for

  637. life in

  638. general.

  639. Where of

  640. course in

  641. John darkness

  642. darkness for

  643. him is

  644. synonymous

  645. with things

  646. that are

  647. much more

  648. sinister than

  649. what goes

  650. on in my

  651. living room

  652. at night.

  653. That darkness

  654. is what we

  655. experience before

  656. we get to

  657. know Jesus.

  658. It is our

  659. confusion and

  660. blindness

  661. morally.

  662. It is our

  663. proneness to

  664. living in a

  665. way that is

  666. muddled and

  667. inappropriate and

  668. that has many

  669. many falls in

  670. the dark.

  671. As if we

  672. were living as

  673. blind people

  674. needing to

  675. know where

  676. to go but

  677. not being able

  678. to find the

  679. way.

  680. And we're

  681. full of

  682. anxieties of

  683. things that we

  684. can't see in

  685. the darkness.

  686. And we're

  687. morally confused

  688. as to what is

  689. right and to

  690. what is wrong.

  691. And as we

  692. look at society

  693. that is a

  694. really accurate

  695. picture isn't

  696. it?

  697. But then when

  698. we come to

  699. meet Jesus

  700. it's as if

  701. this great big

  702. floodlight is

  703. switched on in

  704. the living room

  705. and we begin

  706. to see the

  707. obstacles and

  708. the dangers and

  709. the things to

  710. avoid in life.

  711. And we begin

  712. to see what is

  713. right and what

  714. is wrong.

  715. And what is

  716. deceitful and

  717. what is true and

  718. what is good.

  719. And we become

  720. morally cited.

  721. And so he is

  722. the person who

  723. claims to bring

  724. us to God

  725. and to give us

  726. true enlightenment

  727. to our

  728. questions and

  729. to our

  730. speculations.

  731. And he will

  732. keep us from

  733. falling over in

  734. the darkest

  735. places in our

  736. lives.

  737. To believe in

  738. him is to

  739. have the

  740. father, to

  741. believe the

  742. father and

  743. it's to have

  744. this light, the

  745. light of life.

  746. But thirdly and

  747. lastly the third

  748. thing he says is

  749. that to believe in

  750. Jesus, to believe

  751. in me is to

  752. have life.

  753. It's to have the

  754. father, to have

  755. light, it is to

  756. have life.

  757. Just drop your

  758. eye to verse

  759. 49, just at the

  760. bottom.

  761. He says, for I

  762. have not spoken

  763. on my own

  764. authority, but

  765. the father who

  766. sent me has

  767. himself given

  768. me a commandment,

  769. what to say and

  770. what to speak.

  771. And I know that

  772. his commandment

  773. is eternal

  774. life.

  775. Now, again, we

  776. see, don't we,

  777. the link between

  778. the person of

  779. Jesus and his

  780. father in heaven.

  781. That not only in

  782. his works, but in

  783. his words, Jesus'

  784. message isn't

  785. stuff that he's

  786. just made up, or

  787. things that he

  788. wants to say.

  789. No, he's been

  790. given what to say,

  791. hasn't he, by the

  792. father.

  793. It's very humble

  794. again, isn't it,

  795. that the last thing

  796. that he says to

  797. people in his

  798. public ministry is

  799. to discredit any

  800. claim that he is

  801. only speaking for

  802. himself.

  803. He says, no, no,

  804. it's not my

  805. message, it's my

  806. father's message

  807. that I'm giving

  808. to you.

  809. But what is, what

  810. is the foundational

  811. word that the

  812. father speaks

  813. through him?

  814. Well, we see this

  815. word coming up

  816. twice, don't we,

  817. in the words that

  818. Jesus speaks.

  819. And it says, he

  820. says there that the

  821. father has given

  822. him a commandment.

  823. See, once in

  824. verse 49, and

  825. then in verse 50,

  826. he has come to

  827. give his father's

  828. commandment.

  829. And what is that

  830. commandment?

  831. Verse 50,

  832. eternal life.

  833. Now, that is

  834. strange, isn't it?

  835. What is strange

  836. about the way that

  837. he describes this

  838. life?

  839. Jesus says, I've

  840. come that people

  841. might have life,

  842. but notice he

  843. doesn't say, the

  844. father has sent

  845. me to give the

  846. promise of eternal

  847. life, or the

  848. offer of eternal

  849. life.

  850. But he's given me

  851. a commandment, the

  852. commandment of

  853. eternal life.

  854. And what Jesus is

  855. doing here is he is

  856. showing us a God

  857. who is so concerned

  858. for his listeners

  859. and for people,

  860. that he doesn't

  861. send Jesus to

  862. merely suggest the

  863. way to life, or

  864. to offer the way

  865. to life, but to

  866. command that we

  867. believe in Jesus

  868. and receive life in

  869. his name.

  870. That is the most

  871. loving thing to do,

  872. isn't it?

  873. When God the

  874. Father knows what

  875. we need.

  876. This is the

  877. message of God

  878. the Father, I

  879. command you to

  880. trust in Jesus

  881. and to receive

  882. life in his

  883. name.

  884. They are the

  885. words of a God

  886. who loves us

  887. enough to

  888. command what is

  889. best for us, to

  890. command life.

  891. And so Jesus, in

  892. his humility, he

  893. is being extremely

  894. positive, isn't

  895. he, with these

  896. people who have

  897. rejected him.

  898. He is humble and

  899. gentle and

  900. compassionate.

  901. He gives people

  902. another chance.

  903. He even says,

  904. doesn't he, I've

  905. not come to

  906. judge you.

  907. I've come to

  908. save you, people

  909. who have

  910. rejected me.

  911. But, I think

  912. there is a note

  913. of warning that

  914. we need to see

  915. before we finish,

  916. before we close.

  917. For there is a

  918. warning for those

  919. who still don't

  920. receive him,

  921. isn't there?

  922. And he speaks

  923. to a person who

  924. still rejects.

  925. Jesus, if you

  926. look at verse

  927. 48, there's

  928. the person, the

  929. one who rejects

  930. me and does

  931. not receive my

  932. words, has a

  933. judge.

  934. The word that I

  935. have spoken will

  936. judge him on the

  937. last day.

  938. One of my old

  939. tutors at college

  940. pictures the scene

  941. in heaven.

  942. I think it

  943. describes this

  944. really well.

  945. He says, imagine

  946. the person who

  947. comes before God

  948. says, I'm not

  949. going to

  950. judge him on

  951. judgment day.

  952. And God says

  953. to him, why

  954. haven't you

  955. believed in

  956. Jesus?

  957. And the person

  958. says, well I

  959. didn't want to

  960. stop doing the

  961. things that I

  962. wanted to do in

  963. my life, I

  964. just wanted to

  965. live for myself.

  966. And God will

  967. reply, well did

  968. you hear the

  969. command that I

  970. gave through

  971. Jesus for

  972. eternal life?

  973. And the man

  974. said, well I

  975. did hear it, but

  976. I wanted to

  977. spend my money

  978. and my time

  979. and my life

  980. my own way.

  981. And God

  982. says to him,

  983. you mean to

  984. say that you

  985. chose death and

  986. have rejected

  987. the glorious

  988. message of

  989. Jesus for

  990. those stupid

  991. reasons?

  992. And the man

  993. says, yes I

  994. did.

  995. And God

  996. replies, well

  997. the message

  998. that you have

  999. heard stands

  1000. as witness

  1001. against you

  1002. today.

  1003. And so to

  1004. throw Jesus

  1005. out may not

  1006. feel like much

  1007. of a big

  1008. deal, but

  1009. there will

  1010. come a day

  1011. when we will

  1012. realise just

  1013. how valuable

  1014. he and his

  1015. message is to

  1016. us.

  1017. And how

  1018. wonderful his

  1019. message is.

  1020. And that we've

  1021. thrown out much

  1022. more than we

  1023. knew we had

  1024. in him.

  1025. And so God's

  1026. command to us

  1027. today, through

  1028. Jesus, is that

  1029. we do not get

  1030. to that point.

  1031. And that we

  1032. receive him,

  1033. the only way

  1034. to God, and

  1035. to light in

  1036. our lives, and

  1037. to eternal

  1038. life forever

  1039. with God.

  1040. And so let

  1041. us do that,

  1042. shall we, in a

  1043. prayer as we

  1044. close.

  1045. That's great.

  1046. Amen.
