  1. Well let me ask you to turn back again in your Bibles if you will to these closing verses of Genesis chapter 50.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  2. A seven year old knew that the Apostle Peter was also a prophet because you'll remember there are very specific prophecies that Peter makes about exactly how the world is going to end.

  3. So next week there will probably be a question where the answer is hidden in the book of Revelation.

  4. So it's excellently encouraging to me as I feared I might be turned into a pumpkin for not getting back to Scotland on the Sabbath day.

  5. And that's been a blessing to me.

  6. Well you would guess that the particular verse I want to draw your attention to this evening is the famous words.

  7. Very familiar words in Genesis chapter 50 and verse 20 where Joseph is addressing his fearful brothers.

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  8. Who are obviously concerned that perhaps now out of respect for his father he has been gracious and kind to them.

  9. But now that their father is gone the real Joseph will emerge and they will get their comeuppances for the way in which they have treated him.

  10. And he speaks to them with such kindness.

  11. You meant evil against me but God meant it for good to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today.

  12. So do not fear I will provide for your little ones.

  13. I did not have the privilege of growing up in a church going family.

  14. And I'm a post war baby.

  15. We did not have much in the way of literature in the house.

  16. My mother had relatively little education although I think she was a highly intelligent woman.

  17. And she taught me to read very very early on.

  18. And the one book that I remember we had in the house although we were not church goers was my grandmother's Bible.

  19. Looking back now I think what phenomenal eyesight these people must have had.

  20. These thick Bibles and tiny print.

  21. And since we also had no central heating I simultaneously devised a way of satisfying my reading habit and enjoying central heating.

  22. When my parents got out of their bed in the morning I got into their bed with my grandnana's Bible.

  23. And it was the story book of my childhood.

  24. And there were two particular stories that I always loved to read for some reason.

  25. One was the story of Daniel whom I always found difficult to find because he was kind of lost away somewhere in my grandmother's Bible.

  26. And the other was the story of Joseph.

  27. And I could never remember there was not a book of Joseph in the Bible.

  28. So sometimes I was scrambling around in order to read it.

  29. And in much later life I looked back on those early childhood memories of reading this story again, again, again and again.

  30. And realized I think God was preparing me to be a minister of the gospel.

  31. To be a pastor of the flock of God.

  32. Because one of the most frequent questions that comes up in conversations ministers have with people and people with ministers is the question,

  33. Why is this happening to me?

  34. And that is what this whole narrative is about.

  35. This narrative that begins in Genesis 37 ends here in Genesis 50 is a narrative of tracing the pattern of God's working in a man's life

  36. until he is able to look back and he knows why these things were happening to him.

  37. You meant it for evil to harm me.

  38. God meant it for good.

  39. And I'm pretty sure all of us here this evening know the story.

  40. Joseph is his father's favorite.

  41. And his foolish father gives him special treats.

  42. His brothers are jealous.

  43. They express that jealousy.

  44. He is sold into slavery.

  45. God is with him in that slavery.

  46. And yet in that God presence with him, he finds himself going further downhill.

  47. He is faithful to God.

  48. But he is betrayed by Potiphar's wife.

  49. He is given the gift of the interpretation of dreams.

  50. And those whose dreams he interprets find their interpretation comes true.

  51. And then he is forgotten in prison.

  52. And then eventually, years later, actually 14 years later, inclusive reckoning.

  53. 17 through to the age of 30.

  54. Eventually at the age of 30, he is raised up to become, for all practical purposes, the prime minister of Egypt

  55. and ultimately the human savior of the whole Mediterranean basis.

  56. Because he has this wisdom to harvest the seven years of plenty in order that they may be used for the seven years of famine.

  57. In the providence of God, his brothers appear.

  58. He becomes part of God's instruments in eventually bringing the whole family together.

  59. There is a glorious reconciliation.

  60. And here, in the end of chapter 50, we read that this reconciliation was the real deal.

  61. And the brothers are united together again here in the land of Egypt.

  62. And it becomes clear from, at least from chapter 45 onwards, that Joseph has long meditated on the ways of God in his life.

  63. My mother used to say to me when I was seven, Sinclair, there is no substitute for experience.

  64. And it used to infuriate me.

  65. Because at seven, you don't have much of it.

  66. And it made me see that this was a very unjust world.

  67. That at seven, you couldn't have much experience.

  68. But there is no substitute for experience.

  69. And here now, he's old enough to look back on God's ways and to see the pattern of God's working in his life.

  70. So much so that what he says here summarizes what is a kind of dramatic version of what Paul says towards the end of Romans 8, isn't it?

  71. That God works everything together for good for those who love him and who are called according to his purpose.

  72. We cannot read God's purposes in advance.

  73. But often in retrospect, we are able to see how the various elements in the experience of the Lord's providence that we have.

  74. He has been working together in order eventually to bring us to this place at this time.

  75. As these particularly carefully shaped people to serve him for his glory.

  76. And that's all I really want to point out from these verses this evening and from this whole section.

  77. That Joseph is now able to look at the jigsaw puzzle of his life with the major pieces in place.

  78. I know, not by happy experience, but by observation usually of my wife,

  79. that the way you begin to solve a jigsaw puzzle, if it's square or rectangular, is to look for the four corner pieces.

  80. And once you've found the four corner pieces, you begin to build the rest of the picture together.

  81. And I want to suggest to you that in the jigsaw puzzle of Joseph's life,

  82. there actually are four corner pieces that are not only in his life,

  83. but they're really to be found in the life of every believer.

  84. And I want simply to pick them out one by one and emphasize their importance.

  85. The first is this, that our God is always working in a variety of circumstances.

  86. You know, when we ask the question, what is God doing in my life?

  87. We're almost always thinking about one particular thing.

  88. One particular thing goes wrong.

  89. And it's usually when things go wrong that we ask this question, what is God doing in my life?

  90. And we need to understand that God's purposes are not like individualized words.

  91. They're like sentences.

  92. And when we focus on particular incidents and become, as some of us tend to do, obsessed with particular incidents,

  93. we will never be able to unravel the answer to the question, what is God doing in my life?

  94. Because God is never working merely in one particular incident, one particular circumstance in my life.

  95. He is creating a mosaic.

  96. And his purposes are seen when the pieces of that mosaic begin to fit together, and never before.

  97. That's why John Flavel, the 17th century English minister, said that the providences of God are like Hebrew words.

  98. They're always read in what we regard as reverse order.

  99. We can't interpret them looking forward.

  100. We can only begin to see the picture as he gives us, as it were, more dots.

  101. And eventually a face begins to appear, and we understand a little of what he is doing.

  102. Because certainly earlier on in Joseph's experience, he must have felt quite lost.

  103. He must also have felt that whatever God was doing in his life, and we're told that when he was in Potiphar's house, the Lord was with him.

  104. Whatever God was doing in his life, he was doing it far too slowly.

  105. And I'd be surprised if you have not been there.

  106. Where you're waiting for God to catch up with what your idea of his will might be in your life.

  107. And what he eventually learns is that as God works in a variety of circumstances, as the dots begin to be joined, and the picture begins to become clear,

  108. is that God's ways are perfect, God's purposes are perfect, and God's timing is perfect.

  109. I think as I look at Joseph's life and think about servants of God I've known,

  110. that he and they shared in what I have come to call the divine cul-de-sac principle.

  111. The divine cul-de-sac principle.

  112. Because I've noticed how actually quite regularly in the lives of men and women that I have later seen God use in particular ways,

  113. there have been times in their lives when they seem to have been shunted into a cul-de-sac,

  114. and whatever God is doing seems to have passed them by.

  115. And on occasion I've sat with some people like that and said,

  116. what we need to do under these circumstances is to recognize God has not passed you by.

  117. God is simply getting you ready for the place in the traffic flow of his purposes in which he intends to use you for his glory.

  118. Because he is concerned with timing.

  119. And he is concerned that you should learn what it means to experience waiting on the Lord.

  120. And do you know how the scriptures use those two expressions that we might think mean the same thing,

  121. but they don't mean the same thing.

  122. Waiting on the Lord and waiting for the Lord are related to one another.

  123. But what Joseph had learned to do was to wait for the Lord until in his providences he began more fully to disclose where he was really leading Joseph.

  124. There's a very interesting illustration of the same principle in the life of the Apostle Paul in the Acts of the Apostles in chapter 16.

  125. You'll remember the tale end of this experience even if you don't remember the beginning of it.

  126. They went through the region of Phrygia and Galatia.

  127. So why were they doing that?

  128. Because they had been forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia.

  129. Now that clearly means they intended to speak the word of God in Asia,

  130. but they had been forbidden from doing what they intended to do.

  131. So they came to Mycenae.

  132. And they attempted to go into Bithynia.

  133. Now here's the paradox.

  134. They were attempting to do what God's sovereign will did not want them or purpose them to do.

  135. They were not sinning because they were seeking to be wise.

  136. But Luke tells us here in the Acts of the Apostles that when they came up to Mycenae and attempted to go into Bithynia,

  137. the spirit of Jesus did not allow them.

  138. So, passing by Mycenae, they went down to Troas.

  139. Everything they've sought to do thus far.

  140. Everything they've laid before the Lord and said,

  141. Lord, show us if this is not your purpose.

  142. Every, every move they've made has been frustrated.

  143. And what is the result?

  144. Well, you know what the result is.

  145. The next verse is about the Macedonian call.

  146. It's about the gospel coming to what we call Europe.

  147. It's about the gospel coming to people like us.

  148. And you see what the story is.

  149. That they were able to look back and realize

  150. if we hadn't been prevented there and forbidden here,

  151. we would have never ended up here in Philippi.

  152. Where in God's mercy, there had been a preparation of a woman

  153. who went to a prayer meeting at the riverside.

  154. And in God's mercy, a girl who was oppressed by wicked men.

  155. And a jailer who would never in a thousand years have imagined

  156. he would ever become a Christian believer.

  157. And that's how it is.

  158. The fact of the matter is, they did not know what God was doing.

  159. But he was working in a variety of circumstances

  160. in order to bring about the fulfillment of his will.

  161. And he always is.

  162. He always is.

  163. So God was working together a variety of circumstances

  164. in Joseph's life.

  165. But we ought to notice also that God was working

  166. in a variety of people in Joseph's life.

  167. My tendency, and I imagine some of you at least share it,

  168. is when the Christian life and how we are looking to serve the Lord

  169. becomes frustrating, then the way in which we frame the question

  170. is usually, why are these things happening to me?

  171. Why are these things happening to me?

  172. Now what Joseph clearly came to understand was

  173. many of these things that involved him were not about him.

  174. And that's a particularly important lesson for our self-obsessed, narcissistic age

  175. in the way that self-obsession and narcissism has profoundly influenced

  176. not just the Christian church in general, but the evangelical subculture in particular.

  177. You only need to listen to the songs that are being written and sung

  178. to catch a sense of the self-obsession that has been encouraged

  179. in the atmosphere of the late 20th and early 21st century.

  180. But you see, this isn't just about Joseph.

  181. This is about others.

  182. I mean, ultimately it's about the whole Mediterranean basin.

  183. But it's also about his father.

  184. And if you go back to the beginning of this narrative in Genesis 37,

  185. what do you see?

  186. You see that Joseph's father is repeating the very same mistake his own parents did

  187. in bringing him up.

  188. He's got a favorite.

  189. And all of that needs to be divinely torn out of his soul.

  190. And God is using the situations into which Joseph is brought

  191. in order to do something at distance, as it were, to his father.

  192. In order to bring about a restoration and a reconciliation

  193. between the father and all his other boys.

  194. And the same is true of the brothers.

  195. It is true.

  196. I mean, it's very interesting that Joseph is clear to them about this.

  197. You meant evil against me.

  198. But you see, in God's amazing providence,

  199. he had used this in order to do something to the brothers.

  200. And if you, if you're like, you'll read through the narrative.

  201. Don't just keep your eye on Joseph.

  202. Keep your eye on what is happening to these brothers.

  203. And the way in which God slowly deconstructs them.

  204. Until, instead of selling their brother,

  205. they're embracing their brother.

  206. It is amazing the way in which God does this.

  207. So, if earlier on in the narrative,

  208. it would be perfectly understandable if Joseph was saying,

  209. God, why is this happening to me?

  210. The answer is, Joseph, this is only partly about you.

  211. It's about them.

  212. I'm doing this in you for them.

  213. And the person who grasps that that is the way God works

  214. will be a happier, contented, more stable,

  215. and indeed more fruitful Christian believer.

  216. Of that I have no doubt whatsoever.

  217. And you see this repeated time and time again,

  218. don't you, in the pages of Scripture.

  219. Let me just use Paul as an illustration again.

  220. There he is in jail.

  221. And he's writing to the Philippians.

  222. What's his concern about the Philippians?

  223. His concern about the Philippians is

  224. that the Philippians are concerned

  225. that the whole project of preaching the gospel

  226. is going to die because the Apostle Paul is in prison.

  227. And Paul underlines for them that he is a prisoner

  228. for the sake of Jesus Christ.

  229. And that because of that,

  230. there has been fruit in the Roman artillery.

  231. And there has been fruit in the Christians

  232. who have been bold to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  233. And he realizes this did not happen to me for me.

  234. This happened to me for the sake of the gospel

  235. and for their sake to do something in them.

  236. And that's the way God works, isn't it?

  237. I remember hearing at the memorial service

  238. for the daughter of a colleague

  239. that she had said one Lord's Day after worship

  240. just bare bones of a young woman.

  241. And she had said to him

  242. as they greeted one another at the end of the service,

  243. she said, I realize this isn't just about me.

  244. It isn't just about me.

  245. Very moving, isn't it?

  246. But you see, it's true.

  247. It's true of everything that happens to us.

  248. We're not the center of the universe.

  249. So God, in his mercy,

  250. works together a variety of circumstances.

  251. He works together in a variety of lives.

  252. And he also works out a variety of consequences.

  253. And I've already alluded to this, really,

  254. in Jacob's life, the reconciliation.

  255. There's this beautiful illustration of it, isn't it?

  256. When the brothers are seated by Joseph.

  257. They come and they don't recognize him, you remember.

  258. And he seats them all

  259. just the way they should have been seated

  260. and maybe were seated at home.

  261. We have four children.

  262. And of course, we were all together for years.

  263. And then you get this age.

  264. And you're never together in the same way.

  265. Except on the rarest occasions.

  266. And the last occasion,

  267. my wife and I,

  268. and just the four children,

  269. none of their attachments of any kind,

  270. their spouses or children,

  271. the last time we were all together,

  272. our first son,

  273. as we went to the table in a restaurant

  274. to have a meal,

  275. he insisted we sit around the table

  276. the way we sat around the table.

  277. Which was immovable.

  278. It was the law of the Meats,

  279. the Persians, and the Fergusons.

  280. We always sat in the exact same place.

  281. It moved me profoundly

  282. that he even remembered that.

  283. And Joseph does the same thing.

  284. Now some of you are probably mathematicians

  285. and you can work out the statistical probability

  286. of accidentally placing

  287. a whole bundle of brothers

  288. in the right age order around a table.

  289. And they're stunned.

  290. And then you remember

  291. when the wee boy arrives,

  292. Joseph says,

  293. pile his plate high.

  294. Put the best steak on his plate.

  295. Now why is that?

  296. You see what he's doing?

  297. He's kind of,

  298. he's like a surgeon,

  299. just,

  300. well not a surgeon,

  301. he's like your family doctor

  302. that you go to

  303. and you know,

  304. he knows where to press.

  305. Is it sore here?

  306. No!

  307. If you're a man,

  308. you're relieved,

  309. there's nothing wrong with me.

  310. It's not a really serious doctor.

  311. And then he,

  312. are you sore here?

  313. And you go,

  314. oh!

  315. And that's what he's doing.

  316. This is exactly the sore point.

  317. They were jealous of Joseph

  318. because he got the best.

  319. And here God is using Joseph

  320. to discover whether they're going to be jealous

  321. of the wee boy again

  322. because Joseph is giving him the best.

  323. And what begins to emerge

  324. is that God has so worked

  325. in the lives of these brothers

  326. that they are prepared to make sacrifice

  327. for the sake of their youngest brother.

  328. And it's all,

  329. it's all sourced back

  330. to what God was doing here

  331. in their formerly younger brother's life.

  332. And yes,

  333. God was working in Joseph's life.

  334. I have never understood

  335. why God does things this way.

  336. But both Scripture

  337. and the history of the church

  338. teach me

  339. that God gives people gifts

  340. even when they're not able to handle them.

  341. And I think it's pretty clear

  342. God gave this boy,

  343. age 17,

  344. an extraordinary gift.

  345. He did give him

  346. a revelatory dream

  347. that actually came true

  348. when he didn't have the wisdom

  349. to contain it.

  350. And so when he came down

  351. to breakfast in the morning

  352. and he put his cornflakes

  353. into his bowl

  354. and he poured the milk out

  355. and one of the brothers said,

  356. did you sleep well Joseph?

  357. Instead of saying,

  358. yeah it was okay.

  359. And keeping it all to himself.

  360. He blurted it out.

  361. And nobody was in any doubt

  362. what he was saying.

  363. The arrogant 17 year old teenager.

  364. The favourite of the father.

  365. And yet,

  366. given this extraordinary revelation

  367. that came true,

  368. he blurted it all out

  369. and the message was,

  370. I'm the man.

  371. You'll all be coming

  372. and bowing down

  373. before me.

  374. And what is so amazing,

  375. what is so apostolic

  376. in this is,

  377. this foolish act of his

  378. in the hands of

  379. a gracious, loving,

  380. heavenly father

  381. becomes, as it were,

  382. the raw materials

  383. out of which

  384. this elongated process

  385. of transforming

  386. this whole family

  387. and reconciling them

  388. and it's so interesting,

  389. it's so interesting

  390. this connection

  391. that when you read

  392. through the whole narrative

  393. you meet Joseph

  394. when he's 17,

  395. when he becomes

  396. prime minister

  397. he is 30.

  398. Okay,

  399. so that is 14 years

  400. by the kind of

  401. inclusive reckoning

  402. that Bible writers use.

  403. And that's significant,

  404. isn't it?

  405. Because what he's now

  406. going to deal with

  407. is the next 14 years.

  408. He is at 14 years

  409. in which he has learned

  410. patience and wisdom.

  411. And those are exactly

  412. the two gifts he needs

  413. in order to accomplish

  414. what he accomplishes.

  415. Patience.

  416. Patience to handle

  417. those seven years

  418. of plenty

  419. and wisdom

  420. to use those

  421. seven years

  422. of plenty

  423. so that he may be

  424. a blessing

  425. to the world

  426. in the seven years

  427. of famine.

  428. And it's taken

  429. 14 years

  430. to make him that.

  431. So that when he becomes

  432. prime minister of Egypt

  433. he's not only

  434. in the right place

  435. at the right time

  436. but he's the right man

  437. for the right place

  438. and the right time.

  439. And I don't know

  440. why God does it

  441. this way as I say

  442. but he was not

  443. the right man

  444. at the age of 17.

  445. And when he spoke

  446. it wasn't the right time.

  447. And yet in his

  448. you know maybe

  449. maybe some of you

  450. are thinking

  451. I have been

  452. exactly there.

  453. I have so messed up.

  454. And God is

  455. in the mystery

  456. of his wisdom

  457. and providence

  458. he's taken

  459. all that rubbish

  460. you've kind of

  461. landed on his plate

  462. and he's made

  463. something of you.

  464. And you realize

  465. that the wonder

  466. of his working

  467. is that he has

  468. been working out

  469. his own purposes

  470. in this way

  471. because

  472. he's able to

  473. not only work

  474. in a variety

  475. of situations

  476. and to

  477. work

  478. in a variety

  479. of people

  480. but he's able

  481. to work out

  482. a variety

  483. of consequences

  484. and how often

  485. it's true

  486. in our lives

  487. that he does

  488. that through

  489. pain and difficulty

  490. and challenge.

  491. John Flavel

  492. again has a

  493. lovely saying

  494. when he

  495. he says

  496. that afflictions

  497. are like

  498. frosty weather

  499. on garments

  500. they change

  501. their hue

  502. and whiten

  503. the sheet.

  504. If you're under

  505. 30 you've no idea

  506. what that is all

  507. about

  508. because you use

  509. washing machines

  510. and tumble dryers.

  511. But my generation

  512. I still remember

  513. as a little boy

  514. in those rare days

  515. in winter

  516. when the sun

  517. shone

  518. and it was

  519. frosty

  520. my mother

  521. would say

  522. this is going

  523. to be a great

  524. day for bleaching.

  525. And

  526. that's it

  527. isn't it?

  528. The frost

  529. in Joseph's

  530. life

  531. had

  532. been used

  533. by God

  534. to make him

  535. the right man

  536. in the right

  537. place

  538. at the right

  539. time.

  540. Now there's a

  541. fourth corner

  542. piece

  543. I want you

  544. to notice

  545. and

  546. it's not

  547. a corner

  548. piece

  549. that is

  550. stated in

  551. the text

  552. but it's

  553. really written

  554. all over

  555. the story

  556. of Joseph

  557. and that

  558. is that

  559. in our

  560. lives

  561. God

  562. is always

  563. working

  564. through a

  565. variety

  566. of

  567. circumstances

  568. he is

  569. working

  570. in a variety

  571. of people

  572. he's working

  573. a variety

  574. of consequences

  575. and the

  576. fourth corner

  577. piece

  578. is this

  579. and it's

  580. the one

  581. to hold

  582. on to

  583. that he's

  584. doing all

  585. this

  586. in order

  587. that Jesus

  588. may be

  589. glorified

  590. he's doing

  591. all this

  592. in order

  593. that Jesus

  594. may be

  595. glorified

  596. now

  597. you know

  598. there's some

  599. very artificial

  600. preaching of

  601. Jesus from

  602. the Old

  603. Testament

  604. you know

  605. where suddenly

  606. you leap

  607. from the

  608. text to

  609. Jesus

  610. and you

  611. don't know

  612. how you

  613. got there

  614. but it's

  615. pretty evident

  616. how you get

  617. to Jesus

  618. from Joseph

  619. it's because

  620. all those

  621. men and

  622. women of

  623. faith in

  624. the promise

  625. of God

  626. in the Old

  627. Testament

  628. scriptures

  629. are united

  630. by that

  631. faith to

  632. the Jesus

  633. who is to

  634. come

  635. just as we

  636. are united

  637. to that

  638. Jesus

  639. on this

  640. side of

  641. his death

  642. and resurrection

  643. they were

  644. united by

  645. faith to

  646. Jesus

  647. on their

  648. side of

  649. the death

  650. and resurrection

  651. and as the

  652. New Testament

  653. makes clear

  654. one of the

  655. great implications

  656. of that

  657. is

  658. that if you

  659. are united

  660. to Christ

  661. in his

  662. death and

  663. resurrection

  664. your life

  665. will be

  666. shaped

  667. in small

  668. ways

  669. perhaps in

  670. very great

  671. ways

  672. your life

  673. will be

  674. squeezed

  675. into the

  676. mold

  677. of his

  678. death

  679. and resurrection

  680. you will

  681. be united

  682. to

  683. remember

  684. how Paul

  685. puts it

  686. what I want

  687. to do

  688. with my

  689. life

  690. is to

  691. know

  692. Christ

  693. the

  694. power

  695. of his

  696. resurrection

  697. share

  698. the

  699. fellowship

  700. of his

  701. sufferings

  702. become

  703. like him

  704. in his

  705. death

  706. and attain

  707. to the

  708. resurrection

  709. the lenses

  710. through which

  711. he viewed

  712. what it means

  713. to be a

  714. Christian

  715. were lenses

  716. of being

  717. united to

  718. Christ

  719. and being

  720. transformed

  721. into his

  722. likeness

  723. and it's

  724. all over

  725. his life

  726. and it's

  727. all over

  728. his letters

  729. but you

  730. see the

  731. same

  732. is true

  733. of the

  734. Old

  735. Testament

  736. saints

  737. and you

  738. can

  739. just

  740. run

  741. through

  742. them

  743. in

  744. your

  745. mind

  746. and you

  747. see

  748. this

  749. is

  750. the

  751. way

  752. they

  753. share

  754. in

  755. advance

  756. in the

  757. fellowship

  758. of the

  759. sufferings

  760. of Christ

  761. in this

  762. world

  763. and they

  764. also share

  765. in advance

  766. in the

  767. triumphs

  768. of Christ

  769. and his

  770. resurrection

  771. and you

  772. can see

  773. it here

  774. in Joseph

  775. what we

  776. might call

  777. the Jesus

  778. pattern

  779. of humiliation

  780. and exaltation

  781. suffering

  782. and glory

  783. death

  784. and resurrection

  785. it oozes

  786. out of

  787. what God

  788. is doing

  789. in the

  790. life of

  791. Joseph

  792. and in

  793. addition to

  794. what we

  795. might call

  796. the Jesus

  797. pattern

  798. there's the

  799. Jesus

  800. principle

  801. it's

  802. through his

  803. suffering

  804. that blessing

  805. comes to

  806. the nations

  807. it's all

  808. over Joseph's

  809. life

  810. it's through

  811. his

  812. suffering

  813. that blessing

  814. comes to

  815. the nations

  816. and you

  817. notice also

  818. in the end

  819. of Genesis

    Genesis 50 chapter mention

  820. chapter 50

  821. there's

  822. the Jesus

  823. promise

  824. that runs

  825. right through

  826. his life

  827. the promise

  828. that was

  829. given

  830. you remember

  831. to

  832. Adam and

  833. Eve

  834. that there

  835. would be

  836. a seed

  837. who

  838. would

  839. be the

  840. conqueror

  841. of the

  842. evil

  843. one

  844. and that

  845. as it

  846. were

  847. grows

  848. in the

  849. promise

  850. that's

  851. given

  852. to

  853. Abraham

  854. that in

  855. his seat

  856. the nations

  857. of the

  858. world

  859. are going

  860. to be

  861. blessed

  862. but in

  863. the pursuit

  864. of that

  865. promise

  866. God's

  867. people are

  868. going to

  869. be brought

  870. down

  871. into

  872. a land

  873. where they

  874. will remain

  875. for over

  876. 400 years

  877. before

  878. the next

  879. stage

  880. in God's

  881. movement

  882. forward

  883. to the

  884. coming

  885. of our

  886. Lord

  887. Jesus

  888. Christ

  889. comes

  890. on to

  891. the

  892. horizon

  893. and you

  894. see

  895. Joseph's

  896. place

  897. there

  898. in that

  899. timeline

  900. the promise

  901. of Genesis

  902. 315

  903. the promise

  904. that's given

  905. to Abraham

  906. the fact

  907. that before

  908. that promise

  909. given to

  910. Abraham

  911. is fulfilled

  912. in the

  913. coming of

  914. Jesus

  915. Christ

  916. the saving

  917. seed

  918. there is

  919. going to

  920. be a

  921. period

  922. when the

  923. people

  924. will be

  925. brought

  926. down

  927. to

  928. a

  929. land

  930. from

  931. which

  932. they

  933. will

  934. be

  935. brought

  936. up

  937. so

  938. that

  939. in

  940. Joseph

  941. without

  942. Joseph

  943. this

  944. does

  945. not

  946. happen

  947. in

  948. Joseph

  949. God

  950. is

  951. advancing

  952. his

  953. purposes

  954. that

  955. eventually

  956. lead

  957. to

  958. the

  959. revelation

  960. of

  961. Jesus

  962. Christ

  963. and I

  964. think

  965. we can

  966. apply

  967. that

  968. to

  969. ourselves

  970. can't

  971. we

  972. that

  973. this

  974. actually

  975. is

  976. his

  977. purpose

  978. in

  979. our

  980. lives

  981. and

  982. everything

  983. that

  984. happens

  985. he's

  986. wanting

  987. to

  988. shape

  989. our

  990. lives

  991. in

  992. such

  993. a

  994. way

  995. that

  996. our

  997. lives

  998. will

  999. be

  1000. a

  1001. manifestation

  1002. to

  1003. others

  1004. of

  1005. the

  1006. grace

  1007. of

  1008. God

  1009. in

  1010. our

  1011. Saviour

  1012. Jesus

  1013. Christ

  1014. and we

  1015. will

  1016. be

  1017. a

  1018. link

  1019. in

  1020. the

  1021. chain

  1022. of

  1023. God's

  1024. providential

  1025. purposes

  1026. as

  1027. Joseph

  1028. was

  1029. such

  1030. a

  1031. major

  1032. link

  1033. in

  1034. that

  1035. chain

  1036. that

  1037. eventually

  1038. would

  1039. lead

  1040. history

  1041. and

  1042. lead

  1043. individuals

  1044. to

  1045. the

  1046. foot

  1047. of

  1048. the

  1049. cross

  1050. to

  1051. embrace

  1052. the

  1053. Saviour

  1054. and

  1055. to

  1056. advance

  1057. the

  1058. gospel

  1059. in

  1060. the

  1061. world

  1062. and

  1063. maybe

  1064. the

  1065. best

  1066. way

  1067. to

  1068. put it

  1069. is

  1070. like

  1071. this

  1072. that

  1073. in

  1074. these

  1075. chapters

  1076. between

  1077. Genesis

  1078. 37

  1079. and

  1080. Genesis

  1081. 50

  1082. God

  1083. puts

  1084. these

  1085. principles

  1086. on the

  1087. big

  1088. screen

  1089. Joseph

  1090. is a

  1091. big

  1092. screen

  1093. example

  1094. but

  1095. you're

  1096. only

  1097. an

  1098. iPad

  1099. or

  1100. perhaps

  1101. you're

  1102. just

  1103. an

  1104. iPhone

  1105. and that's

  1106. true of us

  1107. isn't it

  1108. not many of us

  1109. live on the

  1110. big screen

  1111. not any of us

  1112. have lives

  1113. that are written

  1114. in capital

  1115. letters

  1116. but in

  1117. small

  1118. letters

  1119. but it's

  1120. the same

  1121. sentence

  1122. that's being

  1123. written

  1124. that transforms

  1125. our lives

  1126. transforms

  1127. others

  1128. lives

  1129. and brings

  1130. others

  1131. to faith

  1132. in the

  1133. Lord

  1134. Jesus

  1135. Christ

  1136. because

  1137. our

  1138. God

  1139. is

  1140. a

  1141. master

  1142. of

  1143. his

  1144. purposes

  1145. we

  1146. we are

  1147. we are

  1148. but members

  1149. of the

  1150. orchestra

  1151. different

  1152. instruments

  1153. seeking

  1154. to play

  1155. to his

  1156. glory

  1157. and he

  1158. is the

  1159. conductor

  1160. who

  1161. harmonises

  1162. absolutely

  1163. everything

  1164. I remember

  1165. when our

  1166. daughter

  1167. our daughter

  1168. had a

  1169. birthday

  1170. I think

  1171. it was

  1172. maybe her

  1173. 13th

  1174. birthday

  1175. and she

  1176. wanted to

  1177. go and see

  1178. Joseph and

  1179. his amazing

  1180. technicolor

  1181. dream coat

  1182. she didn't know

  1183. anything about

  1184. Joseph and

  1185. his amazing

  1186. technicolor

  1187. dream coat

  1188. she knew

  1189. about Joseph

  1190. and the

  1191. Bible

  1192. and unfortunately

  1193. for her

  1194. and for me

  1195. my wife

  1196. who was

  1197. going to

  1198. take her

  1199. took

  1200. unwell

  1201. and I

  1202. had to

  1203. take her

  1204. we had

  1205. seats

  1206. absolutely

  1207. in the

  1208. front row

  1209. I don't know

  1210. about 3,000

  1211. people in the

  1212. theatre

  1213. it was

  1214. the professionalism

  1215. was spectacular

  1216. beyond words

  1217. but I was the

  1218. only person

  1219. in the entire

  1220. theatre

  1221. who did not

  1222. know

  1223. that at some

  1224. point

  1225. in this

  1226. musical

  1227. Pharaoh

  1228. turns into

  1229. Elvis

  1230. Presley

  1231. and I

  1232. left out

  1233. this kind

  1234. of wild

  1235. and

  1236. daughter

  1237. embarrassing

  1238. but the

  1239. thing about

  1240. sitting in

  1241. the front

  1242. row

  1243. was

  1244. that we

  1245. could see

  1246. into the

  1247. pit

  1248. and so we

  1249. could see

  1250. the whole

  1251. thing on

  1252. two levels

  1253. we could

  1254. see the

  1255. conductor

  1256. who was

  1257. absolute

  1258. master

  1259. I mean he

  1260. was so

  1261. master of

  1262. the score

  1263. that I

  1264. watched him

  1265. walk in

  1266. and he

  1267. pulled out

  1268. a packet

  1269. of M&M's

  1270. and he

  1271. poured them

  1272. into this

  1273. little cup

  1274. he had

  1275. at the

  1276. side

  1277. and he

  1278. was

  1279. in total

  1280. control

  1281. and I

  1282. sat there

  1283. thinking

  1284. this is how

  1285. it is

  1286. in the

  1287. Christian

  1288. life

  1289. isn't it

  1290. although

  1291. God is

  1292. a much

  1293. more

  1294. serious

  1295. conductor

  1296. you know

  1297. we see

  1298. the drama

  1299. being played

  1300. out

  1301. but it's

  1302. being played

  1303. out

  1304. according

  1305. to

  1306. the score

  1307. that the

  1308. conductor

  1309. has designed

  1310. from all

  1311. eternity

  1312. and he

  1313. is a

  1314. master

  1315. an absolute

  1316. master

  1317. of that

  1318. score

  1319. yes it's

  1320. true

  1321. he moves

  1322. in mysterious

  1323. ways his

  1324. wonders to

  1325. perform

  1326. it's true

  1327. he plants

  1328. his footsteps

  1329. in the

  1330. sea

  1331. and the

  1332. problem

  1333. with footsteps

  1334. in the

  1335. sea

  1336. is they're

  1337. not visible

  1338. but he

  1339. does work

  1340. in the

  1341. deep

  1342. unfathomable

  1343. minds

  1344. with his

  1345. never failing

  1346. skill

  1347. he treasures

  1348. up his

  1349. bright designs

  1350. he works

  1351. his sovereign

  1352. will

  1353. and his

  1354. sovereign will

  1355. is to work

  1356. in our lives

  1357. in a variety

  1358. of circumstances

  1359. to work

  1360. through our

  1361. lives

  1362. in a variety

  1363. of people

  1364. to work

  1365. by our

  1366. lives

  1367. a variety

  1368. of consequences

  1369. and most

  1370. of all

  1371. to work

  1372. upon

  1373. our lives

  1374. for the

  1375. glory of

  1376. our Lord

  1377. Jesus

  1378. Christ

  1379. those of us

  1380. who are here

  1381. for the unique

  1382. two o'clock

  1383. service

  1384. were thinking

  1385. a little

  1386. about Simon

  1387. Peter

  1388. and the

  1389. storm

  1390. and this

  1391. narrative

  1392. also makes

  1393. me think

  1394. about the

  1395. words that

  1396. Jesus

  1397. you remember

  1398. spoke to

  1399. Simon Peter

  1400. when he was

  1401. arguing about

  1402. the foot washing

  1403. with him

  1404. that is

  1405. Peter

  1406. arguing with

  1407. Jesus

  1408. remember what

  1409. Jesus said

  1410. the words

  1411. could be written

  1412. all over

  1413. Joseph's life

  1414. you don't

  1415. understand

  1416. what I'm

  1417. doing

  1418. now

  1419. but afterward

  1420. you will

  1421. understand

  1422. sometimes

  1423. in his

  1424. kindness

  1425. that afterward

  1426. becomes

  1427. here and

  1428. now

  1429. the great

  1430. thing about

  1431. being a

  1432. Christian

  1433. and being

  1434. a Christian

  1435. who is

  1436. getting older

  1437. is you

  1438. know the

  1439. day is

  1440. coming

  1441. when that

  1442. afterward

  1443. will reveal

  1444. the whole

  1445. of his

  1446. purposes

  1447. congregation

  1448. I served

  1449. in

  1450. Columbia

  1451. came to

  1452. know

  1453. that when

  1454. I was

  1455. finding it

  1456. difficult

  1457. to land

  1458. the plane

  1459. as the

  1460. sermon

  1461. went on

  1462. I tended

  1463. to finish

  1464. the same

  1465. way

  1466. and I

  1467. think I'll

  1468. do that

  1469. tonight

  1470. don't you

  1471. think it

  1472. is the

  1473. greatest

  1474. thing

  1475. in the

  1476. world

  1477. to belong

  1478. to the

  1479. Lord Jesus

  1480. Christ

  1481. let's pray

  1482. together
