  1. Alright, so 2 Samuel is our home group book for the next year. This is the guide and commentary that the leaders will be using.

  2. ! If you don't have one and you want to get one, that's Dale Ralph Davis's 2 Samuel, Out of Every Adversity.

  3. So that's really quite a good book. It talks about all the issues, got good discussion questions at the end and it's really accessible and it's not written in a too technical kind of way.

  4. So really a good book to get for yourself as well to work through that.

  5. And of course, we're following on from 1 Samuel about a year, 2 years ago.

  6. So, a lot of what you hear tonight, if you were here for that, will be familiar, but it's good to recap that and refresh those things because essentially 1 and 2 Samuel originally were one book as circulated in the Old Testament.

  7. So a lot of what we said there are still relevant for 2 Samuel. And it's 2 years ago, let's be honest.

  8. So 2 Samuel, but first for something not very different.

  9. Before we dive into the book itself, it's good to recap a bit about covenants and how the Bible works, how the biblical story works and how the biblical story brings us to this place in the Bible of 2 Samuel.

  10. The Bible story is God's kingdom coming through covenants, God's kingdom breaking into this world and being established in this world by way of God's covenant with his people.

  11. And that kingdom, as it's visible in this world, grows as the covenants that God makes with his people become more visible and expand through the course of the history that we find in the Bible.

  12. Just like that tree that's grown from that little seed into a sapling, into a little tree, into this massive tree like the fir tree that we've got out the back.

  13. That's very helpful in many ways.

  14. So the story is God's people, the story works towards an ideal and as we see it unfold in the history of the Bible, it is a story of God's people in God's land, under God's rule, awaiting a Sabbath rest that is promised to them.

  15. And that is what the message is to Israel as they come out of Egypt.

  16. At the Exodus, as they go into this promised land, there is the idea of rest.

  17. If you go into this land and obey my law, then you will enjoy the blessing of rest.

  18. But there is always this idea of an eternal rest that is coming.

  19. Right from Genesis 3, really, where our labour is now afflicted and affected by toil and marked by toil.

  20. Work is hard now.

  21. Even from there, there is the idea that there will be a rest from those things.

  22. The creation account itself, God resting on the seventh day.

  23. And it's always administered by a representative.

  24. God's people are led by Moses, and then we've got the judges, and then Saul, David, and the rest of the kings.

  25. And of course, it works towards Jesus, ruling and reigning over his people.

  26. And the ideal that it works towards is God's kingdom in a new creation.

  27. Where, finally, his son will reign over God's people.

  28. And at the moment, we're not quite in that Sabbath rest yet.

  29. But we're in this time, in this epoch, between those representatives and the not yet, the waiting for the full fulfillment, the full culmination of all of this.

  30. Where God's people are under God's son, and under his bride, the church.

  31. We are under the authority of Christ, in this time mediated through the church.

  32. But we're still awaiting a Sabbath rest.

  33. How does the covenant work?

  34. The covenants in the Bible all have an element of grace, starting with grace.

  35. There's an element of law.

  36. We'll unpack this now.

  37. And that law has aspects of blessing and curse attached to it.

  38. But regardless of how that plays out, there's always grace in the end.

  39. Which, as we go through the Bible story, is very good news.

  40. So, two main types of covenants in the Bible, really.

  41. Works and grace.

  42. Covenant of works with Adam in the Garden of Eden.

  43. Debated by some scholars, but generally in Reformed circles, we buy into that.

  44. That there was a covenant of works with Adam.

  45. That Adam was given tasks.

  46. If he obeyed God, that would have led to eternal life, eternal blessing.

  47. We're not talking about that now.

  48. We're talking about the covenant of grace, which follows from that.

  49. And unfolds through the rest of the Bible story, leading to the fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

  50. So, how does the Bible story grow?

  51. Like we said, in various stages in this covenant of grace.

  52. There's the covenant of restoration with the seed of the woman.

  53. Genesis 3, like we said.

  54. Covenant of preservation with Noah.

  55. I won't destroy the earth again, as with this flood.

  56. Covenant of promise with Abraham.

  57. In you all the nations of the earth will be blessed.

  58. And looking forward to Abraham's seed and doing that.

  59. The covenant of law with Israel, Moses.

  60. And they all have signs attached to them.

  61. The rainbow with Noah, circumcision with Abraham.

  62. The Sabbath attached to the covenant of law with Moses.

  63. That's a sign of that.

  64. The covenant of the kingdom with David.

  65. And then the covenant of fulfillment made with the church.

  66. The new covenant.

  67. And really what we see in the book, this book and the Bible up to now, the historical books,

  68. is that covenant of law with Israel and the covenant of the kingdom with David.

  69. And as we start to Samuel, we're still in the transition between those two stages, really.

  70. We transition into Samuel between those two stages of the unfolding of the covenant.

  71. Up to now they've been under the law of Israel.

  72. They've been out of Egypt.

  73. In Exodus received the law.

  74. And we're about to see in 2 Samuel, God expanding the covenant into the next phase.

  75. The covenant with David.

  76. So that's important to keep in mind with what's going on in 2 Samuel.

  77. Generally, this is the unfolding of the next stage of God's plan for his people.

  78. The covenant of law.

  79. That was the stage that we're in up to now.

  80. God said, I will be your God and you will be my people.

  81. And this applied to the people in the land in this way.

  82. So God elected Israel's fathers while there were still, you know, idolaters, Abraham and all of them.

  83. He rescued them from Egypt.

  84. He graciously blessed them even through Balaam, the unbeliever.

  85. And he graciously gave them the land through Joshua.

  86. All the initiative of God.

  87. Grace is the starting point of that covenant.

  88. People sometimes try to separate these things, grace and law.

  89. We can't really do that.

  90. They're intertwined.

  91. But the covenant starts with grace.

  92. The law is they must obey God's laws as the way of life in the covenant.

  93. God says, this is how you should live.

  94. And makes it pretty clear.

  95. And out of that law, attached to that is blessing and curse.

  96. Their stay in the land is conditional on them obeying the law.

  97. In the land that God's given them, Canaan.

  98. Blessing means enjoying life in that land.

  99. Curse means slavery to their enemies and exile ultimately.

  100. So what do they do?

  101. They go and disobey God's laws and they fall into idolatry.

  102. And ultimately they go into exile.

  103. But before that, I mean right from the beginning, they go into the land.

  104. They fall into idolatry.

  105. And that's the whole story of judges, isn't it?

  106. Right from the beginning.

  107. It doesn't take them very long.

  108. And they start to disobey God's laws.

  109. They're led into idolatry by various people.

  110. And God has to raise up leader after leader for them.

  111. To rescue them from that.

  112. And from their enemies.

  113. And give them rest.

  114. And there's a downward spiral in judges.

  115. In 1 Samuel we then saw, isn't it, that God responds ultimately after that whole saga in judges.

  116. And they cry out, we want a king.

  117. They of course say, we want a king like the nations.

  118. And that's a sinful request.

  119. Because God told them in Deuteronomy, don't ask for a king like the nations.

  120. And they go and do exactly that.

  121. So he graciously responds to that request.

  122. And gives them what they asked for.

  123. Choose a Saul from the tribe of Benjamin.

  124. And Saul must now respond by faith to God.

  125. For this grace shown to him.

  126. And chosen as king.

  127. There's a lot in Deuteronomy.

  128. Deuteronomy 17.

  129. About one day when they do get a king.

  130. How this king should live.

  131. And obey and lead them.

  132. So that's already established.

  133. Israel's king must obey God's laws.

  134. And study them.

  135. And meditate them.

  136. And meditate upon them.

  137. And govern in accordance with them.

  138. That's been established for a long time.

  139. Blessing for the king is.

  140. It will go well with him and the nation.

  141. The nation is blessed.

  142. Or cursed.

  143. In many ways.

  144. Through the actions of the king.

  145. The representative.

  146. And the red ministers.

  147. God's people.

  148. If the king disobeys.

  149. He and the nation will be swept away.

  150. So there's really a question of life and death.

  151. In the covenants.

  152. So what we're coming to now.

  153. Is the covenant of the kingdom.

  154. The covenant God makes with David.

  155. Transitions from the covenant with Moses.

  156. And particularly chapter 7.

  157. So when we get there.

  158. That will be a big thing.

  159. That we'll look at.

  160. So grace.

  161. Again.

  162. God responds in grace to David's poor background.

  163. He's not wealthy.

  164. He's not well thought of.

  165. His family.

  166. They're not.

  167. They don't have high status.

  168. He's not even the eldest.

  169. God knows all the moral failures.

  170. That we'll see of David.

  171. Already.

  172. And yet still chooses him.

  173. To make a covenant with him.

  174. In this way.

  175. And to get him to lead the people.

  176. And the covenant isn't just any covenant.

  177. God promises to establish the kingdom of his son forever.

  178. Through David.

  179. Which is an incredible thought.

  180. Given where David was.

  181. At that stage.

  182. Before God called him.

  183. And now again.

  184. David must respond by faith.

  185. In God's covenant's promise.

  186. Saul had to do that.

  187. We've seen how tragically he failed in doing that.

  188. In 1 Samuel.

  189. That's the question now in 2 Samuel.

  190. Isn't it?

  191. Is David going to be different?

  192. Is David going to respond in faith to God's promises?

  193. Unlike Saul.

  194. That's the cliffhanger that we're on.

  195. That's the tension.

  196. That the writer of Samuel.

  197. wants us to feel.

  198. Again.

  199. David and his son are to obey God's laws.

  200. And that.

  201. Word son there is important.

  202. In that covenant with David.

  203. It comes up.

  204. You know.

  205. We see Solomon succeed.

  206. David.

  207. Not quite into Samuel.

  208. Beginning of 1 Kings.

  209. But that's kind of a tension.

  210. That runs through it as well.

  211. Is.

  212. Is one of the sons.

  213. Going to be the son.

  214. That is talked about in 2 Samuel.

  215. And.

  216. We looking back.

  217. Know that.

  218. Ultimately.

  219. That is Jesus Christ.

  220. Who is a descendant of David.

  221. But.

  222. You know.

  223. We'll talk about a bit.

  224. About this a bit.

  225. As we go along.

  226. With something like this.

  227. We.

  228. Often run the risk.

  229. Of jumping too quickly.

  230. To Jesus.

  231. It's always a good thing.

  232. To go to Jesus.

  233. And that's where we need to end up.

  234. But.

  235. Reading back.

  236. We sometimes.

  237. Maybe do ourselves.

  238. A disservice.

  239. Of dwelling in the text.

  240. As it.

  241. Is.

  242. And.

  243. You know.

  244. Not letting ourselves.

  245. Feel the tension.

  246. That the readers of that time.

  247. Would have felt themselves.

  248. So.

  249. Maybe as we kind of.

  250. Go through this year.

  251. Try and do that.

  252. And see.

  253. How would someone have read it.

  254. At the time.

  255. You know.

  256. Or between then.

  257. And.

  258. Seeing how this is fulfilled.

  259. In Jesus.

  260. Um.

  261. I think that helps us.

  262. Um.

  263. The grace is that.

  264. Although David's son.

  265. Might sin.

  266. Um.

  267. God will not.

  268. Remove his love.

  269. From him.

  270. But will establish the throne.

  271. Of his kingdom.

  272. Forever.

  273. That's the promise.

  274. That God makes to David.

  275. Isn't it?

  276. This is an eternal.

  277. Kingdom.

  278. An eternal throne.

  279. And.

  280. That is.

  281. That is the grace.

  282. Already right there.

  283. Um.

  284. That's good to.

  285. Remember.

  286. So.

  287. Why don't you say.

  288. Samuel.

  289. That's a bit of.

  290. Kingdom.

  291. Um.

  292. By the way.

  293. On.

  294. Covenant.

  295. If you want to read more.

  296. John T.

  297. Rhodes.

  298. Our minister in Leeds.

  299. Has written this.

  300. Very very helpful book.

  301. Uh.

  302. On covenants.

  303. It's.

  304. Again.

  305. Very accessible.

  306. And.

  307. Really.

  308. You know.

  309. Easy to read.

  310. And.

  311. Really unpacks all of this.

  312. How God deals with these people.

  313. Through covenants.

  314. So.

  315. Yeah.

  316. Highly recommended.

  317. I don't think we've got any at the book table at the moment.

  318. You know.

  319. Maybe we'll get some in future again.

  320. Um.

  321. So why don't you Samuel.

  322. Uh.

  323. Quick.

  324. Recap.

  325. Just of where this fits in.

  326. In the.

  327. In the Old Testament.

  328. The Old Testament.

  329. The.

  330. The Jewish Bible.

  331. They structure it in.

  332. Three ways.

  333. And if you.

  334. Buy a Hebrew Old Testament.

  335. It doesn't say.

  336. The Old Testament.

  337. Obviously.

  338. Um.

  339. But it says.

  340. The.

  341. The Torah.

  342. The Nevi'im.

  343. And the Ketuvim.

  344. The instruction.

  345. The prophets.

  346. And the writings.

  347. The Torah.

  348. The first five books of the Bible.

  349. And that's sometimes called law.

  350. You know.

  351. That's one way of.

  352. Of.

  353. Of.

  354. Translating Torah.

  355. But it's more.

  356. Instruction.

  357. More broadly.

  358. So.

  359. Still valid.

  360. And feeding into all of the others.

  361. The prophets.

  362. Um.

  363. And that's really where.

  364. One and two Samuels.

  365. Still fit in as well.

  366. And in the writings.

  367. That's various things like.

  368. The wisdom literature.

  369. And.

  370. Psalms.

  371. And so on.

  372. Um.

  373. So we're in the prophets.

  374. Um.

  375. And the prophets again.

  376. Oh.

  377. Oh.

  378. Yeah.

  379. Oh.

  380. Yeah.

  381. Yeah.

  382. Yeah.

  383. Yeah.

  384. Yeah.

  385. Yeah.

  386. So the former prophets.

  387. Um.

  388. That's where it sits.

  389. The kind of.

  390. Early.

  391. Uh.

  392. Before.

  393. The.

  394. The exile.

  395. And just before the exile.

  396. And then the latter prophets.

  397. You know.

  398. Isaiah.

  399. Jeremiah.

  400. Ezekiel.

  401. Daniel.

  402. Isn't there as well.

  403. And the twelve.

  404. Prophets.

  405. Um.

  406. But we're in that.

  407. Former prophets.

  408. It's still fairly early on.

  409. Um.

  410. The prophets.

  411. What do prophets do?

  412. Prophets speak God's word.

  413. Into the world.

  414. Um.

  415. And.

  416. You know.

  417. We'll see later on as well.

  418. You know.

  419. That's.

  420. That's how.

  421. The New Testament writers.

  422. Viewed Samuel as well.

  423. And the books of Samuel.

  424. Um.

  425. As.

  426. God's word being proclaimed into.

  427. The world at the time.

  428. Um.

  429. And still into the world.

  430. You know.

  431. Into the world they were living in.

  432. Uh.

  433. After Jesus had come already.

  434. Um.

  435. So that is.

  436. Really the way that we should look at these books too.

  437. They're not just historical writings.

  438. About.

  439. Events that happened.

  440. They are God speaking his word.

  441. Um.

  442. Into.

  443. Our world.

  444. And our lives as well.

  445. Um.

  446. And a quick recap.

  447. Samuel.

  448. Starts with Eli.

  449. Um.

  450. Disappears off the scene fairly quickly.

  451. Um.

  452. Samuel.

  453. The prophet.

  454. Um.

  455. Judges.

  456. He's the last judge.

  457. Um.

  458. And then.

  459. The.

  460. The.

  461. The bulk of.

  462. One Samuel.

  463. Really.

  464. Is the reign and decline of Saul.

  465. And then.

  466. The rise of David.

  467. Um.

  468. Through a lot of adversity.

  469. Um.

  470. And that's where the title of that.

  471. Uh.

  472. Dale Rolf Davis commentary is.

  473. Out of every adversity.

  474. That's what David says.

  475. When he.

  476. When he.

  477. When he.

  478. When he.

  479. When he.

  480. When he.

  481. When he's crowned.

  482. At the beginning of 2 Samuel.

  483. And he says.

  484. Lord you've rescued me out of every adversity.

  485. He really suffers quite a lot under Saul.

  486. Um.

  487. Um.

  488. But that's the.

  489. That's the.

  490. That's one Samuel.

  491. Um.

  492. Just worth.

  493. Think.

  494. Remembering.

  495. Um.

  496. Hello.

  497. Okay.

  498. Um.

  499. At the end of Ruth.

  500. We've got.

  501. Ruth.

  502. Needing to be redeemed.

  503. By our kinsman redeemer.

  504. And there's a Mr. So and So.

  505. Um.

  506. Who's the.

  507. The nearest person.

  508. Um.

  509. Um.

  510. Boaz.

  511. Takes over.

  512. Mr. So and So.

  513. Again.

  514. Think about.

  515. You know.

  516. For all eternity.

  517. He'll be known as Mr. So and So.

  518. Um.

  519. Boaz takes over.

  520. He steps in.

  521. And.

  522. From there.

  523. From that.

  524. Union.

  525. Uh.

  526. David is a descendant.

  527. And from there.

  528. Jesus Christ.

  529. So.

  530. It.

  531. This has been predicted.

  532. And been.

  533. Been.

  534. Ordained by God.

  535. A long time.

  536. Before already.

  537. We see the seeds of that.

  538. Already in Ruth.

  539. Um.

  540. Yeah.

  541. Um.

  542. In terms of.

  543. Structure.

  544. Of 1 and 2 Samuel.

  545. Um.

  546. Again.

  547. They're kind of.

  548. We've got them as two books.

  549. In the Bible.

  550. But.

  551. They really.

  552. Are.

  553. Apparently.

  554. As best we can tell.

  555. Were.

  556. Written and seen.

  557. As one book.

  558. Um.

  559. From a very.

  560. Very early.

  561. Time.

  562. Um.

  563. So.

  564. We've got our.

  565. Kind of.

  566. Start of 2 Samuel.

  567. Really.

  568. In the middle.

  569. Of a block.

  570. Um.

  571. In a story arc.

  572. That goes.

  573. Right from 1 Samuel.

  574. Um.

  575. So just worth keeping in mind.

  576. As we delve into it.

  577. Next week.

  578. Um.

  579. Um.

  580. From this.

  581. Commentary.

  582. From Delrell Davis.

  583. That we'll be using.

  584. This is how he devised it up.

  585. So 1 Samuel 1 to 7.

  586. Primary focus is.

  587. Is Samuel.

  588. And there's a summary section.

  589. At the end of 1 Samuel 7.

  590. Um.

  591. 1 Samuel 8 to 14.

  592. Is Saul.

  593. Saul coming into power.

  594. Well.

  595. Summary of that.

  596. Um.

  597. Um.

  598. And then.

  599. The section that we're going to delve into now.

  600. And that we've finished.

  601. When we've finished 1 Samuel.

  602. Is.

  603. David 1.

  604. Um.

  605. 1 Samuel 15.

  606. Through to 2 Samuel 8.

  607. Is.

  608. David really coming into.

  609. Into power.

  610. David coming into.

  611. Office as king.

  612. David being anointed.

  613. Uh.

  614. The death of Saul.

  615. That transition happening.

  616. The contestation that happens around that.

  617. It's not easy.

  618. It.

  619. It's not obvious.

  620. It's going to be.

  621. Right from the beginning.

  622. We'll see people.

  623. Disputing.

  624. Um.

  625. David's claim to the throne.

  626. Uh.

  627. Which.

  628. Uh.

  629. They shouldn't be.

  630. Given that.

  631. God.

  632. Anoints him.

  633. As king.

  634. But.

  635. That's the case.

  636. So that's the story.

  637. Through to.

  638. 2 Samuel 8.

  639. 2 Samuel 7.

  640. Is.

  641. Is.

  642. Is.

  643. The high point there.

  644. Isn't it.

  645. Where God.

  646. Makes this covenant.

  647. With David.

  648. And establishes.

  649. David's throne.

  650. Forever.

  651. And.

  652. 2 Samuel 8.

  653. Ends again.

  654. With a summary section.

  655. And.

  656. Uh.

  657. These summary sections.

  658. You know.

  659. We can read that.

  660. Read that.

  661. Very quickly.

  662. Um.

  663. It's.

  664. It sounds a bit dry.

  665. Um.

  666. So David reigned.

  667. Over all Israel.

  668. And David administered.

  669. Justice and equity.

  670. To all his people.

  671. Joab.

  672. The son of Zeruiah.

  673. Zeruiah.

  674. Was over the army.

  675. And Jehoshaphat.

  676. The son of Ahilud.

  677. Was recorder.

  678. And Zadok.

  679. The son of Ahitub.

  680. And Ahimelech.

  681. The son of Abiathar.

  682. Were priests.

  683. And Zeruiah.

  684. Was secretary.

  685. And Benaiah.

  686. The son of Jehoiada.

  687. Was over the Cherithites.

  688. And the Pelethites.

  689. And David's sons.

  690. Were priests.

  691. Um.

  692. But there's a lot of theological richness.

  693. In there.

  694. Um.

  695. Um.

  696. How does David.

  697. Administer.

  698. Just.

  699. Uh.

  700. Obviously reign.

  701. He administered justice.

  702. And equity.

  703. To all his people.

  704. Um.

  705. That's the ideal of the king.

  706. Isn't it?

  707. Um.

  708. And I think.

  709. Just.

  710. You know.

  711. Even in the.

  712. In the.

  713. In who's listed there.

  714. It reinforces this idea of kingdom.

  715. The kingdom is now established.

  716. The kingdom is ordered.

  717. There are people doing these various things.

  718. Um.

  719. It's such a contrast to judges.

  720. You know.

  721. Just not very long before that.

  722. Where it ends with.

  723. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  724. Um.

  725. So.

  726. There is a message that comes with that as well.

  727. Um.

  728. The middle block.

  729. Uh.

  730. David 2.

  731. So 9 to 20.

  732. Is a long stretch.

  733. Again with a similar kind of a.

  734. A summary section.

  735. Um.

  736. And.

  737. We'll unpack a bit more about what happens there.

  738. But.

  739. And then he has the last section.

  740. 21 to 24.

  741. As kingdom.

  742. Um.

  743. Um.

  744. Just a heading.

  745. Um.

  746. Zooming in on 2 Samuel a bit.

  747. Just from this Delo of Davis.

  748. Commentary again.

  749. Um.

  750. The title for 1 to 8.

  751. Is.

  752. A man after God's own heart.

  753. Um.

  754. Again.

  755. That's the big contrast with Saul.

  756. Isn't it?

  757. Saul was.

  758. Not a man after God's own heart.

  759. He was not the king that.

  760. Uh.

  761. Israel should have wanted.

  762. He is the one they wanted.

  763. He didn't have a heart.

  764. Um.

  765. That was.

  766. After God in the first place.

  767. Um.

  768. But now we have a man who's after God's own heart.

  769. Picked by God.

  770. Specifically to be.

  771. The king over Israel.

  772. Um.

  773. In the middle block again.

  774. So that's really.

  775. The heading he gives for that is.

  776. A servant under God's rod.

  777. Um.

  778. A servant under God's rod.

  779. Now.

  780. When we go through those.

  781. Those chapters.

  782. We'll see why he does that.

  783. Um.

  784. Quite early on.

  785. In.

  786. That section.

  787. Um.

  788. Chapter 10.

  789. 11.

  790. 11.

  791. Um.

  792. Is.

  793. Bathsheba and Uriah.

  794. Um.

  795. Um.

  796. Again.

  797. Quite shocking.

  798. Um.

  799. Uh.

  800. What happens there.

  801. Quite disappointing.

  802. For the reader.

  803. Here's this king.

  804. A man who's after God's own heart.

  805. And.

  806. It doesn't take him long.

  807. To.

  808. Um.

  809. Fall for his own particular.

  810. Sins.

  811. Um.

  812. And.

  813. Uh.

  814. To transgress God's law.

  815. Um.

  816. And.

  817. To basically follow his own lusts.

  818. Um.

  819. And.

  820. A last chunk of that.

  821. Section of 9 to 20.

  822. Is actually the outworking of that.

  823. Um.

  824. There's.

  825. Uh.

  826. David and his family.

  827. Suffers.

  828. Quite significantly.

  829. As a result of that.

  830. Um.

  831. It's not that when God.

  832. Made the covenant with David.

  833. And he established.

  834. David's throne forever.

  835. That.

  836. That means there would be no consequences.

  837. Um.

  838. Going forward.

  839. Um.

  840. Uh.

  841. David's children suffer.

  842. Um.

  843. The child dies.

  844. Uh.

  845. And then.

  846. We've got the shocking.

  847. Uh.

  848. Episode of.

  849. Um.

  850. Tamar.

  851. Uh.

  852. And.

  853. Uh.

  854. What's his name?

  855. Um.

  856. Um.

  857. Here.

  858. Sorry?

  859. Um.

  860. Yes.

  861. Amnon.

  862. Um.

  863. Who sleeps with his sister.

  864. Um.

  865. Absalom kills him.

  866. There's a whole.

  867. Spiraling out of control.

  868. It almost feels.

  869. At that stage.

  870. Which again.

  871. You know.

  872. Makes us think.

  873. What is going on?

  874. Um.

  875. What is the.

  876. What is.

  877. What is going to happen?

  878. Um.

  879. But.

  880. He is a servant under God's rod.

  881. Um.

  882. And.

  883. We see through those chapters.

  884. How.

  885. David really.

  886. Realizes both his dependence on God.

  887. His own.

  888. Limitations and inadequacies.

  889. Um.

  890. Um.

  891. And we.

  892. We are reminded.

  893. To look forward.

  894. To the true king.

  895. Who is going to be.

  896. The.

  897. The promised king.

  898. The king we look forward to.

  899. And reminded that David is not.

  900. Is not.

  901. That king.

  902. Just yet.

  903. Um.

  904. Yeah.

  905. And then the last bit.

  906. Kingdom.

  907. Kingdom in God's hands.

  908. We've covered that.

  909. Um.

  910. On that last bit.

  911. I like.

  912. This bit from Robert Bergen's.

  913. New American commentary.

  914. A bit more.

  915. So.

  916. He kind of divides it.

  917. Roughly in the same.

  918. You know.

  919. The first block.

  920. Although he says.

  921. Two Samuel one.

  922. Goes with one Samuel.

  923. That's the end of Saul's dynasty.

  924. He lumps everything together.

  925. Two to twenty.

  926. And say that's.

  927. David reigns as king.

  928. I think that's maybe a bit.

  929. Broad brush stroke.

  930. Um.

  931. Over it.

  932. Um.

  933. But the last bit.

  934. Is kind of an aside.

  935. Illustrations of David's.

  936. Roles in his.

  937. In his relationship with.

  938. The Lord.

  939. And we've got a whole bunch.

  940. Of different.

  941. Almost vignettes.

  942. In that section.

  943. So it feels a bit.

  944. Batchy.

  945. But it's.

  946. It's probably designed.

  947. To show.

  948. Different aspects of.

  949. David's roles.

  950. In his relationship.

  951. Uh.

  952. With the Lord.

  953. Leading the people.

  954. Leading worship.

  955. Various types of things.

  956. Um.

  957. What are the functions.

  958. Of 2 Samuel.

  959. Um.

  960. Um.

  961. Um.

  962. A couple of different things.

  963. You can.

  964. You can argue.

  965. To Samuel.

  966. Roles.

  967. To Samuel.

  968. Plays.

  969. Um.

  970. And they're not.

  971. Mutually exclusive.

  972. Um.

  973. Firstly.

  974. It is history.

  975. It records.

  976. Historical events.

  977. Gives us an insight.

  978. Into what happened.

  979. And what is.

  980. What was the historical unfolding.

  981. Of this.

  982. Plan of God.

  983. For.

  984. The salvation.

  985. Of.

  986. Of his people.

  987. And.

  988. Uh.

  989. The.

  990. The.

  991. The.

  992. Glorification of his son.

  993. Um.

  994. That plays out in history.

  995. And.

  996. To Samuel.

  997. One and two Samuel.

  998. Gives us.

  999. Part of that story.

  1000. Um.

1001. We can date some of the events.

  1002. You know.

  1003. If David.

1004. Started to reign as king.

  1005. Is about 10.

  1006. 10 BC.

  1007. You know.

  1008. Then.

  1009. You know.

1010. You can work from there.

  1011. And.

  1012. You know.

  1013. David was born.

  1014. About 1040.

  1015. Um.

  1016. You know.

  1017. Uh.

  1018. Up to.

  1019. Abner.

  1020. Murdered by Joab.

  1021. And to Samuel 3.

  1022. And so on.

1023. All those kinds of events.

1024. The first couple of chapters.

  1025. That's about.

  1026. 1003 BC.

  1027. Um.

  1028. So quite quickly actually.

1029. This in terms of dating it.

  1030. Chronologically.

  1031. Um.

  1032. The bulk of.

  1033. To Samuel.

  1034. Lay out.

1035. Less than a thousand years.

  1036. Before.

  1037. Jesus was born.

  1038. Um.

  1039. But yeah.

  1040. We can do that.

  1041. Um.

  1042. Literary art.

  1043. I'll talk a bit more about.

  1044. Hebrew narrative.

1045. And how we look at that.

  1046. When we look at.

  1047. The.

  1048. The.

  1049. The text.

  1050. Um.

  1051. But.

  1052. You know.

1053. People who study these things.

1054. Say it is actually quite a.

  1055. Quite a.

  1056. High quality work.

  1057. Of.

  1058. Literary art.

  1059. Um.

  1060. Uh.

  1061. You know.

  1062. And.

  1063. We.

  1064. We maybe miss that.

  1065. Through our kind of.

  1066. Over familiarity.

  1067. With the text.

  1068. But.

  1069. We'll.

1070. We'll look at that a bit more.

  1071. As we go.

  1072. Um.

  1073. On tonight.

  1074. But.

  1075. Yeah.

  1076. Don't.

  1077. Don't let the.

  1078. Don't let the.

  1079. Um.

  1080. The art.

  1081. The.

  1082. The prose.

  1083. Of the narrative.

  1084. Of.

  1085. Pass you by.

  1086. And what the writers.

  1087. Are trying to do.

  1088. Um.

  1089. An apology.

  1090. An apology.

  1091. Not.

  1092. I'm sorry.

  1093. Um.

  1094. Apology.

  1095. In the kind of.

  1096. Biblical discipline.

1097. Kind of a sense of.

  1098. Giving a reason for.

  1099. Um.

  1100. And.

  1101. You know.

  1102. Lots of people have.

  1103. Uh.

  1104. Written about this.

  1105. Kind of arguing that.

  1106. In that time.

  1107. When this was written.

  1108. You know.

  1109. The time of.

  1110. Uh.

  1111. Uh.

  1112. Solomon.

  1113. Probably.

  1114. Um.

  1115. Written probably by Samuel.

  1116. Gad.

  1117. Nathan.

  1118. The prophets.

  1119. One of the.

  1120. You know.

  1121. Main.

  1122. Main avenues.

  1123. Of.

  1124. Of.

1125. Thinking about who wrote this.

1126. And we don't know for certain.

  1127. But.

1128. That this is to provide an accounting.

  1129. For.

1130. Some of the controversial actions.

  1131. And policies.

  1132. Of.

  1133. David.

  1134. And Solomon.

  1135. And.

  1136. You know.

  1137. Then through that.

  1138. Their descendants.

  1139. And.

  1140. And especially.

  1141. The kind of.

  1142. Rise of David.

  1143. And the succession.

  1144. Narratives.

  1145. In 1 and 2 Samuel.

  1146. So.

1147. What do we mean by that?

  1148. Well.

  1149. I mean.

  1150. David displaced Saul.

  1151. Obviously.

  1152. From the throne.

  1153. Um.

  1154. And.

  1155. His male heirs.

  1156. You know.

  1157. There was a.

  1158. There's a.

  1159. That.

  1160. As we'll see.

1161. When we look at 2 Samuel.

  1162. Didn't happen.

  1163. Very easily.

  1164. There wasn't a universal.

  1165. You know.

  1166. Acclamation of David.

  1167. Signing as king.

  1168. Um.

  1169. So now.

  1170. You know.

1171. If you don't deal with that.

  1172. You know.

  1173. And explain.

  1174. How this happened.

  1175. And why this happened.

1176. And you'll always have this problem.

  1177. Um.

  1178. So you know.

  1179. Some of the.

1180. Kind of most damaging accusations.

  1181. Against David.

1182. Could have been the following.

  1183. You know.

  1184. He usurped Saul's throne.

1185. He coerced the religious establishment.

  1186. Into.

  1187. Uh.

  1188. Conspiring against Saul.

  1189. You know.

1190. He organized and led a.

  1191. A rebel military force.

  1192. Um.

  1193. Uh.

  1194. You know.

1195. After he was banished from Israel.

1196. He plundered and raided Israel's territories.

  1197. Uh.

1198. They fought with the Philistines.

  1199. Uh.

  1200. In that battle.

  1201. In which Saul died.

  1202. Um.

  1203. And he was.

1204. He was responsible for executing Saul's male relatives.

1205. And various things like that.

  1206. That.

1207. That's the story that would have been out there.

  1208. Um.

  1209. And 2 Samuel in a sense.

  1210. Tells.

  1211. Tells the different story.

1212. It tells the real story.

1213. It puts the facts on the table.

  1214. Um.

  1215. So to speak.

  1216. So you know.

  1217. People could have.

  1218. Could have quite understandably.

  1219. You know.

  1220. And.

1221. Believed some of those stories.

  1222. If these weren't there.

  1223. But.

  1224. The books of Samuel.

  1225. And 2 Samuel especially.

  1226. Makes.

  1227. Quite clear.

  1228. That.

  1229. David didn't act improperly.

  1230. Towards Saul.

  1231. Um.

1232. Or any member of his household.

  1233. You know.

1234. He never tried to kill Saul.

1235. Or remove him from the throne.

  1236. Um.

1237. He was willing to wait.

  1238. Um.

1239. Even though Saul made at least 16 efforts.

1240. 16 different efforts to murder David.

  1241. Um.

1242. So the narrative portrays Saul.

1243. David as loyal to Saul.

  1244. Um.

  1245. And his household.

  1246. Even.

1247. Even long after Saul's death.

  1248. Um.

1249. So it really wants to make that clear.

  1250. Um.

  1251. Um.

  1252. And.

1253. What it also tells us.

1254. Is that key members of Saul's family.

  1255. Um.

  1256. And his administration.

  1257. And his kingdom.

  1258. Recognized and respected David.

  1259. As Saul's rightful successor.

  1260. Um.

  1261. Saul.

  1262. Even.

  1263. Um.

  1264. Jonathan.

  1265. His son.

  1266. Michal.

  1267. Um.

  1268. His wife.

  1269. Abner.

  1270. The elders of Israel.

  1271. Saul's military officers.

  1272. You know.

  1273. They all are represented.

  1274. In 1 and 2 Samuel.

  1275. As responding positively.

1276. To some aspect of David.

  1277. And his career.

  1278. Um.

1279. So the story out there.

  1280. That.

  1281. There was universal negative.

  1282. You know.

1283. Feelings from any of those quarters.

  1284. Towards David.

1285. Is dispelled in 2 Samuel.

  1286. That's.

1287. That's what the writer wants to put on the table.

  1288. Making it even.

1289. Saul was positive towards David.

  1290. Um.

  1291. You know.

1292. Jonathan will look at that a bit.

  1293. Um.

  1294. Later on.

  1295. Is.

  1296. You know.

  1297. He was.

1298. He was the rightful heir.

  1299. In some sense.

  1300. You know.

  1301. In the people's eyes.

  1302. And he's the one that's.

  1303. Right up front there.

1304. And the main one who's.

  1305. Um.

  1306. Saying.

  1307. David.

  1308. You should be king.

  1309. Um.

  1310. Not me.

  1311. Um.

  1312. And.

  1313. Also.

  1314. Not as David.

1315. But then Solomon's rise to kingship.

  1316. After that.

  1317. Now that kind of.

1318. Goes in a bit into 1 Kings.

  1319. But 2 Samuel.

1320. Sets the stage for that.

  1321. Um.

1322. Now if you think about.

  1323. How Solomon.

  1324. Becomes king.

  1325. After David.

  1326. That's also contested.

  1327. That's also not quite.

  1328. You know.

  1329. Clean.

  1330. Clean cut.

  1331. As clean cut as.

  1332. Maybe.

  1333. Well.

  1334. Definitely.

1335. As Solomon would have wanted.

  1336. Um.

1337. Now he makes a public claim to the throne.

  1338. Only after his brother.

  1339. Adonijah.

1340. Has already been anointed as king.

  1341. Um.

  1342. Um.

  1343. And.

1344. Not only did Solomon's claim come later than Adonijah's.

  1345. But.

  1346. It was weaker.

  1347. Because.

  1348. Uh.

1349. Adonijah was David's oldest living son.

  1350. And.

  1351. Solomon apparently was David's.

  1352. You know.

  1353. Only David's.

  1354. Tenth born son.

  1355. Um.

  1356. To Samuel.

  1357. Three.

  1358. And five.

  1359. Talks about that.

  1360. Um.

  1361. So not quite.

  1362. High up.

1363. As high up the picking order.

1364. As you would need to establish.

1365. Your claim to the throne.

  1366. Uh.

  1367. Very easily.

  1368. And very strongly.

  1369. Um.

  1370. Yeah.

1371. He had David's military commander.

  1372. Joab.

  1373. Put to death.

  1374. Uh.

  1375. And then he.

1376. Continues killing some of Saul's relatives.

  1377. So.

  1378. He's got a problem.

1379. And 2 Samuel needs to deal with that.

  1380. Um.

  1381. But.

1382. When we read 2 Samuel.

  1383. We're prepared to.

  1384. React positively.

  1385. To Solomon's.

  1386. Elevation to the throne.

  1387. So keep out.

1388. Keep a lookout for those things.

1389. As we go through the text.

  1390. Um.

  1391. There are significant indications.

  1392. In 2 Samuel.

1393. That the Lord had long desired.

1394. Solomon to be as well as next king.

  1395. Um.

  1396. Of David's fifteen sons.

1397. Mentioned by name in 2 Samuel.

1398. It's only said of Solomon.

  1399. That.

  1400. The Lord loved him.

  1401. In 2 Samuel 12.

  1402. Um.

  1403. And not just that.

  1404. He's the only child.

1405. Who was given the rare privilege.

  1406. Of being renamed.

  1407. By the Lord.

  1408. Through the prophet Nathan.

  1409. When Samuel's born.

1410. The prophet Nathan comes to David.

  1411. And says.

  1412. You're going to.

  1413. You know.

  1414. Rename him.

  1415. Jedi Diah.

  1416. Which means.

  1417. Beloved of the Lord.

1418. For the Lord loved him.

  1419. Um.

  1420. You know.

  1421. Then.

  1422. Various things.

  1423. Going out of that.

  1424. So kind of.

  1425. From an apology perspective.

  1426. That's.

  1427. That's one of the.

  1428. One of the functions.

  1429. That 2 Samuel has.

  1430. Um.

1431. So if we don't look at it that way.

1432. We're missing part of what the narrative is trying to prepare us for.

  1433. Um.

  1434. Theology.

  1435. Um.

  1436. There is.

  1437. Um.

  1438. Lots of.

1439. Deep and rich theological concepts.

  1440. In 2 Samuel.

  1441. Again.

1442. It's not just the history story.

  1443. Uh.

  1444. Covenant.

  1445. Like we said.

  1446. This whole explosion.

1447. Almost of the covenant now.

  1448. This is.

  1449. You know.

  1450. Or.

  1451. You know.

  1452. If it's not quite.

  1453. Full HD.

1454. As in the new covenant.

  1455. We're definitely.

  1456. You know.

1457. Moving from black and white TV.

  1458. To color now.

  1459. Um.

1460. So covenant is really important.

  1461. God's presence.

  1462. With his people.

  1463. You know.

1464. David prepares for the temple to be built.

  1465. Uh.

  1466. The tabernacle is there.

1467. The tabernacle plays a big role.

1468. Mentioned over and over again.

1469. So look out for that.

  1470. Um.

  1471. And really.

1472. The kind of whole thing about wholehearted obedience.

  1473. To God.

  1474. Um.

1475. What happens when we don't have wholehearted obedience to God.

  1476. And.

  1477. And.

  1478. What are the consequences.

1479. And how does God deal with that.

  1480. Um.

  1481. And there's a.

  1482. You know.

  1483. God does not.

1484. Let those things pass by.

1485. As we see in David's own life.

1486. But we see the gracious nature of how God deals with his people.

1487. Because of his own promises.

  1488. Um.

  1489. And it's scripture.

  1490. Um.

  1491. In the Old Testament.

  1492. Um.

  1493. It's.

1494. There's various kind of overlaps with the Torah.

1495. The first five books of the Bible.

  1496. Various concepts.

1497. I'm not going to go through all of them now.

  1498. But.

  1499. Um.

  1500. There's a.

  1501. Legal connections.

1502. And in the law itself.

1503. And one and two Samuel.

  1504. Things like burnt offerings.

1505. And the Ark of God.

1506. And circumcision with the covenant sign.

1507. All kinds of stuff like that.

1508. And then in two Samuel.

1509. There's a whole lot of things that might seem strange to us.

1510. If we don't see it in the light of what God had already told Israel.

  1511. In the Torah.

  1512. And the law.

  1513. Um.

1514. There are things like carrying the Ark by hand.

  1515. You know.

1516. There's an episode in two Samuel.

  1517. Isn't there.

  1518. Where that's not done.

1519. And that has serious consequences.

  1520. Um.

  1521. It's not arbitrary.

1522. It's coming out of the blue.

  1523. Death penalty for adultery.

  1524. Um.

  1525. Cities of refuge.

  1526. Various things.

  1527. Census.

1528. Right at the end of two Samuel two.

1529. When David has his folly of ordering a census of the nation.

  1530. Um.

  1531. And, um.

1532. The census calling a plague.

1533. That comes from Exodus 30.

  1534. Uh.

  1535. Verses 11 to 16.

  1536. So.

  1537. The.

  1538. Yeah.

1539. It's part of the Old Testament.

  1540. The scripture.

  1541. Obviously.

  1542. Um.

1543. It follows on from the Torah.

1544. With this motif of the shepherd.

  1545. As a noble leader.

  1546. Um.

  1547. Abel.

  1548. Abraham.

  1549. Isaac.

  1550. Jacob.

  1551. Judah.

  1552. Moses.

  1553. They're all.

  1554. Spoken of as shepherds.

  1555. In the Old Testament.

  1556. So.

  1557. In 1 Samuel.

  1558. The opening scenes.

  1559. If you remember.

1560. Where Saul can't find the donkeys.

  1561. Um.

  1562. You know.

  1563. That's not just.

  1564. The story again.

  1565. Of what.

  1566. What happened.

  1567. You know.

1568. He's portrayed as an incompetent shepherd.

1569. Who can't even find these large animals.

  1570. Um.

1571. And they go home later on.

1572. Without Saul even finding them.

  1573. Um.

1574. And the audience is prepared through that.

  1575. To evaluate Saul.

1576. As an unrighteous and tragic character.

  1577. In Israel's history.

1578. But on the other hand.

  1579. David is initially.

  1580. Portrayed as.

  1581. You know.

  1582. A faithful shepherd.

1583. Who is with the flock.

1584. When everybody else is there.

  1585. Trying to be.

  1586. You know.

  1587. Anointed king.

  1588. Um.

  1589. And.

1590. The others have all abandoned him.

1591. But he is still faithfully.

1592. Executing his job as shepherd.

1593. And we'll see how that plays out.

1594. In 2 Samuel as well.

  1595. Um.

  1596. In the New Testament.

  1597. 2 Samuel provides.

  1598. A background for understanding.

  1599. Christian doctrine.

  1600. And teaching.

  1601. Uh.

  1602. Jesus.

  1603. Refers to 1 and 2 Samuel.

  1604. You know.

1605. When he makes the point.

1606. When the Pharisees accuse his.

  1607. You know.

  1608. His.

  1609. His disciples of.

  1610. Uh.

  1611. Plucking grain.

  1612. Uh.

  1613. From the field.

  1614. Mark 2.

  1615. He says.

  1616. Well.

1617. In the days of Abiath.

  1618. The priest.

1619. David's men went into the temple.

1620. And ate the consecrated bread.

  1621. So.

  1622. You know.

  1623. Jesus himself relies on.

  1624. On.

  1625. On 1 and 2 Samuel.

  1626. To make theological points.

  1627. So it's a background for understanding.

  1628. Christian doctrine.

  1629. And teaching.

  1630. That we get.

1631. sometimes primarily from the New Testament

1632. so it's important to remember that

  1633. David son of Jesse

  1634. is mentioned 54 times

1635. in the Greek New Testament

  1636. Samuel three times

  1637. Saul once

  1638. Uriah once, Abiathah once

1639. the phrase son of David

1640. is employed 16 times in the New Testament

1641. mostly in reference to Jesus

1642. but only when we see it in light of

  1643. to Samuel 7

1644. so it is really important for us to understand

1645. a lot of what we get in the New Testament

1646. it is not, we can't separate these things out

  1647. an accurate

  1648. historical record

1649. again that Mark 2 episode that Jesus goes to

  1650. he is

1651. relying on it as an accurate

1652. historical description of what happened

  1653. in David's day

1654. so you know if it's

1655. if Jesus can rely on it

1656. as an accurate historical description

  1657. there's no reason why we can't

  1658. either

  1659. Jesus' genealogical records

1660. relies very heavily on to Samuel

  1661. and it's a source of instruction

  1662. and encouragement and hope

  1663. isn't it

  1664. you know

  1665. Romans 15 verse 4

    Romans 15:4

  1666. talks about

  1667. Holy Scripture

1668. including the books of Samuel

1669. has written to teach us

  1670. so that through endurance

1671. and the encouragement of Scriptures

  1672. we might have hope

1673. that is a function that it has

  1674. as Scripture

  1675. it's a source of instruction

1676. for the writer of Hebrews

1677. relying on David and Samuel

  1678. as he wrote

  1679. examples of faith

  1680. James

  1681. urged his readers

1682. to take as an example

  1683. of patience

1684. in the faith of suffering

  1685. the prophets

1686. who spoke in the name

  1687. of the Lord

  1688. and presumably taking

  1689. Samuel

  1690. as an example

  1691. 1 Samuel 19

  1692. specifically

  1693. and 2 Peter

  1694. tells us

  1695. to keep the words

  1696. of

  1697. 1 and 2 Samuel

1698. along with the rest of Scripture

  1699. in remembrance

  1700. and to implement

  1701. the teaching

  1702. in James

  1703. so

  1704. it has

  1705. a function

  1706. in that broader

  1707. function of Scripture

  1708. that is useful

  1709. for us

  1710. to keep in mind

  1711. so 2 Samuel

  1712. it's all about

  1713. David

  1714. or is it

  1715. it's not

  1716. and that's maybe

1717. one of the biggest mistakes

1718. that we're going to make

1719. when we come to 2 Samuel

  1720. isn't it

  1721. this is

1722. this is the book of David

1723. this is the story of David

1724. we know the story of David

  1725. we learn

  1726. the story of David

  1727. from

  1728. Sunday school

  1729. we hear

  1730. the David stories

  1731. of little stars

  1732. and dads and tots

1733. and all the way through

  1734. we know David's story

  1735. and we know

1736. that this is about David

  1737. it's not about David

  1738. it's about God

  1739. in the first place

  1740. David is

  1741. a way

  1742. that God

  1743. teaches us

  1744. about himself

  1745. through 2 Samuel

  1746. and

  1747. you know

  1748. I think

  1749. 1 Samuel

  1750. when we looked at

  1751. that previously

  1752. you know

  1753. I understand

  1754. again

  1755. spoke about

  1756. David and Goliath

1757. and we even had a rap

  1758. about that

1759. and what it's really about

  1760. you know

  1761. trying to see ourselves

1762. in the position of David

  1763. and you know

1764. how are we like David

  1765. that's

  1766. that's the wrong path

  1767. to go down

  1768. down into

  1769. it is primarily

  1770. teaching us about God

  1771. even in

  1772. and especially

  1773. through David's

  1774. actions

  1775. what is God

  1776. like

  1777. what is his nature

  1778. like

  1779. what is his character

  1780. like

  1781. who is this king

  1782. that we're longing

  1783. for

  1784. the real

  1785. ultimate king

  1786. who will establish

  1787. God's kingdom

1788. it's not in the first

  1789. instance

  1790. about David

  1791. a couple of

  1792. tricky issues

  1793. that might come up

  1794. polygamy

  1795. old theme

  1796. coming through

  1797. from 1 Samuel

  1798. David had

  1799. a number of

  1800. wives and children

  1801. with a number of

  1802. them

  1803. how do we

  1804. how do we

  1805. understand that

  1806. at some level

  1807. we don't know

  1808. it's not

  1809. it's not

  1810. held up

  1811. as a

  1812. great example

  1813. it's not

  1814. as outright

  1815. condemned

  1816. as maybe

  1817. we would want

  1818. possibly the

  1819. lesser of

  1820. evils

  1821. single women

  1822. wouldn't have

  1823. had a way

  1824. of making

  1825. a living

  1826. in those

  1827. days

  1828. poverty

  1829. slavery

  1830. prostitution

  1831. starvation

  1832. that was

  1833. the alternative

  1834. so in some

  1835. ways that

  1836. might feed

  1837. into it

  1838. kings

  1839. were

  1840. too many

  1841. wives

  1842. what's

  1843. too many

  1844. different

  1845. people have

  1846. different

  1847. opinions

  1848. I guess

  1849. most people

  1850. would say

  1851. two

  1852. but

  1853. yeah

  1854. it usually

  1855. goes badly

  1856. is the

  1857. thing to

  1858. keep in

  1859. mind

  1860. and we

  1861. see that

  1862. with

  1863. David's

  1864. sons

  1865. David's

  1866. children

  1867. from

  1868. different

  1869. wives

  1870. that's

  1871. a big

  1872. source

  1873. of the

  1874. conflict

  1875. between

  1876. them

  1877. in the

  1878. succession

  1879. battle

  1880. even

  1881. it's

  1882. people

  1883. from

  1884. different

  1885. wives

  1886. violence

  1887. there's a

  1888. lot of

  1889. violence

  1890. still

  1891. if you

  1892. think

  1893. you

  1894. remember

  1895. David

  1896. wants to

  1897. build

  1898. the

  1899. temple

  1900. God

  1901. says

  1902. no

  1903. you've

  1904. got

  1905. blood

  1906. on

  1907. your

  1908. hands

  1909. you can't

  1910. build

  1911. the

  1912. temple

  1913. your

  1914. son

  1915. will

  1916. we will

  1917. see

  1918. some of

  1919. that

  1920. violence

  1921. in

  1922. two

  1923. sons

  1924. will

  1925. still

  1926. a lot

  1927. of it's

  1928. by the

  1929. state

  1930. David's

  1931. subduing

  1932. the nations

  1933. around

  1934. them

  1935. establishing

  1936. peace

  1937. it's

  1938. not

  1939. in the

  1940. individuals

  1941. hands

  1942. and where

  1943. it is

  1944. where

  1945. individuals

  1946. do

  1947. take it

  1948. into

  1949. their

  1950. own

  1951. hands

  1952. it's

  1953. punished

  1954. quite

  1955. swiftly

  1956. when people

  1957. come to

  1958. David

  1959. trying to

  1960. win his

  1961. favour

  1962. oh I

  1963. killed

  1964. so and

  1965. so for

  1966. you

  1967. that never

  1968. works out

  1969. well for

  1970. them

  1971. it is

  1972. war against

  1973. the seed

  1974. of the

  1975. serpent

  1976. we mustn't

  1977. forget that

  1978. what started

  1979. in Genesis

  1980. is still

  1981. going on

  1982. and these

  1983. nations

  1984. around

  1985. Israel

  1986. are

  1987. emblematic

  1988. of

  1989. the seed

  1990. of the

  1991. serpent

  1992. and God's

  1993. kingdom

  1994. breaking into

  1995. a world

  1996. that is

  1997. opposed

  1998. to him

  1999. will

  2000. elicit

  2001. violence

  2002. from those

  2003. people

  2004. Satan

  2005. and

  2006. E.C.

  2007. do not

  2008. want to

  2009. submit to

  2010. God's

  2011. kingdom

  2012. so we

  2013. must read

  2014. it in that

  2015. sense

  2016. it is

  2017. theocracy

  2018. God

  2019. ruling

  2020. over his

  2021. people

  2022. it's an

  2023. intrusion

  2024. of that

  2025. this reality

  2026. reality

  2027. that God

  2028. rules over

  2029. all things

  2030. and we

  2031. know there's

  2032. a day

  2033. coming when

  2034. everybody who

  2035. is opposed

  2036. to God

  2037. will be

  2038. punished

  2039. and in

  2040. some ways

  2041. some people

  2042. argue

  2043. Merit

  2044. Klein

  2045. there's

  2046. this intrusion

  2047. ethic

  2048. that sometimes

  2049. in the

  2050. Old Testament

  2051. some of

  2052. these things

  2053. that we

  2054. see that

  2055. puzzle us

  2056. that seem

  2057. harsh to

  2058. us

  2059. is some

  2060. of that

  2061. ultimate

  2062. final judgment

  2063. which is more

  2064. horrible than

  2065. we can even

  2066. conceive of

  2067. breaking into

  2068. the here and

  2069. now

  2070. often as

  2071. warnings

  2072. to help

  2073. people to

  2074. escape that

  2075. final judgment

  2076. that is

  2077. coming

  2078. prophetic

  2079. scenarios

  2080. to Samuel

  2081. 10

  2082. the nations

  2083. arraying

  2084. themselves

  2085. against David

  2086. right after

  2087. the covenant

  2088. comes into

  2089. being

  2090. now that

  2091. kind of

  2092. recalls

  2093. Psalm 2

  2094. you know

  2095. why do the

  2096. nations rage

  2097. which come up

  2098. again in the

  2099. New Testament

  2100. there's a

  2101. prophetic element

  2102. to some of

  2103. these things

  2104. pointing forward

  2105. to

  2106. things we

  2107. see

  2108. being

  2109. fulfilled

  2110. in the

  2111. New Testament

  2112. and are

  2113. waiting to

  2114. see fulfilled

  2115. later on

  2116. so that's

  2117. part of

  2118. what is

  2119. going on

  2120. there

  2121. injustice

  2122. cannot be

  2123. the source

  2124. of the

  2125. kingdom

  2126. like I

  2127. said

  2128. you get

  2129. quite a few

  2130. people who

  2131. come to

  2132. David

  2133. saying

  2134. oh we've

  2135. killed

  2136. your rivals

  2137. now give

  2138. us a position

  2139. in your

  2140. administration

  2141. we've

  2142. killed so

  2143. and so

  2144. so your

  2145. path is

  2146. now clear

  2147. that never

  2148. works out

  2149. well for

  2150. them

  2151. not once

  2152. and there

  2153. is a

  2154. sense in

  2155. which the

  2156. violence that

  2157. then happens

  2158. in terms of

  2159. them getting

  2160. killed is a

  2161. recognition that

  2162. their violence

  2163. cannot be the

  2164. source of the

  2165. kingdom

  2166. God will

  2167. punish that

  2168. kind of

  2169. usurping of

  2170. his authority

  2171. in establishing

  2172. his kingdom

  2173. I said we

  2174. talk about

  2175. Hebrew

  2176. narrative

  2177. if we look

  2178. at it

  2179. 2 Samuel 4

  2180. is a good

  2181. place to look

  2182. at that

  2183. if you have

  2184. a bible

  2185. and you want

  2186. to look at

  2187. that

  2188. so this is

  2189. how Ish-busheth

  2190. Saul's son

  2191. who's

  2192. anointed

  2193. king

  2194. and

  2195. is killed

  2196. in this

  2197. chapter

  2198. by these

  2199. fellows

  2200. Barna

  2201. and

  2202. recap

  2203. characterisation

  2204. is very

  2205. important in

  2206. Hebrew

  2207. narrative

  2208. little details

  2209. that are given

  2210. to you about

  2211. how someone

  2212. acted

  2213. how they

  2214. reacted

  2215. what they

  2216. didn't do

  2217. it's often

  2218. very subtle

  2219. but it is

  2220. very worth

  2221. paying attention

  2222. to the little

  2223. small details

  2224. of what people

  2225. do and how

  2226. they portray

  2227. Hebrew narrative

  2228. often won't

  2229. kind of come

  2230. out and say

  2231. something out

  2232. loud

  2233. these were

  2234. two very

  2235. bad people

  2236. you've got to

  2237. deduce it

  2238. from what's

  2239. going on

  2240. sometimes it's

  2241. easier

  2242. sometimes it's

  2243. harder

  2244. and juxtaposition

  2245. and foil

  2246. on a

  2247. meta level

  2248. you've got

  2249. Saul in

  2250. 1 Samuel

  2251. David in

  2252. 2 Samuel

  2253. and a lot

  2254. of what we

  2255. need to know

  2256. about David

  2257. isn't said

  2258. outright

  2259. into Samuel

  2260. before that

  2261. even

  2262. it is

  2263. when you

  2264. place those

  2265. two together

  2266. next to each

  2267. other

  2268. and say

  2269. what did

  2270. Saul do

  2271. and how

  2272. did David

  2273. do it

  2274. differently

  2275. that you

  2276. actually

  2277. find out

  2278. what the

  2279. writer of

  2280. Samuel

  2281. wants us

  2282. see about

  2283. David

  2284. it's

  2285. mere

  2286. repetition

  2287. you can

  2288. sometimes

  2289. get something

  2290. stated and

  2291. it looks like

  2292. the writer

  2293. just says it

  2294. again

  2295. it's never

  2296. mere

  2297. repetition

  2298. it always is

  2299. some kind of

  2300. an emphasis

  2301. or some kind

  2302. of an

  2303. expansion

  2304. so when you

  2305. read through

  2306. it

  2307. it looks like

  2308. this guy

  2309. is just

  2310. repeating

  2311. himself

  2312. there's a

  2313. purpose

  2314. to that

  2315. Rechab

  2316. and

  2317. Barna

  2318. they go

  2319. in

  2320. and

  2321. they go

  2322. to

  2323. Ish-busheth

  2324. if you look

  2325. at verse 5

  2326. they said

  2327. about the

  2328. heat of the

  2329. day

  2330. they came

  2331. to the

  2332. house

  2333. of Ish-busheth

  2334. as he was

  2335. taking his

  2336. noonday

  2337. rest

  2338. as they

  2339. came into

  2340. the midst

  2341. of the

  2342. house

  2343. as if

  2344. to get

  2345. wheat

  2346. and they

  2347. stabbed

  2348. him

  2349. in the

  2350. stomach

  2351. then

  2352. Rechab

  2353. and

  2354. Barna

  2355. his

  2356. brother

  2357. escaped

  2358. so fine

  2359. we got

  2360. what happened

  2361. and then

  2362. it says

  2363. in verse 7

  2364. when they

  2365. came into

  2366. the house

  2367. as he

  2368. lay

  2369. on his

  2370. bed

  2371. in his

  2372. bedroom

  2373. they

  2374. struck

  2375. him

  2376. and put

  2377. him

  2378. to

  2379. death

  2380. and

  2381. beheaded

  2382. him

  2383. now we

  2384. got that

  2385. he was

  2386. taking

  2387. his

  2388. noonday

  2389. rest in

  2390. the first

  2391. part

  2392. didn't

  2393. we

  2394. why is

  2395. that

  2396. emphasized

  2397. well he

  2398. was asleep

  2399. sounds obvious

  2400. but what does

  2401. it tell us

  2402. about those

  2403. two that

  2404. they go in

  2405. and sneak

  2406. in and kill

  2407. him while he's

  2408. asleep

  2409. well they're

  2410. cowards

  2411. they're cowardly

  2412. people who try

  2413. and

  2414. you know

  2415. reasal

  2416. themselves into

  2417. David's good

  2418. graces by

  2419. going in and

  2420. killing

  2421. ish

  2422. while he's

  2423. asleep

  2424. that's the

  2425. idea that

  2426. we should

  2427. be getting

  2428. about them

  2429. they're

  2430. cowards

  2431. they're not

  2432. brave people

  2433. who want to

  2434. try and help

  2435. David

  2436. they're really

  2437. cowards

  2438. and that's

  2439. why he

  2440. emphasizes it

  2441. in verse 7

  2442. he was laying

  2443. on his bed

  2444. in his

  2445. bedroom

  2446. they struck

  2447. him and put

  2448. him to

  2449. death

  2450. and beheaded

  2451. him

  2452. they sneak

  2453. in and

  2454. they stab

  2455. him

  2456. and now

  2457. interestingly

  2458. what happens

  2459. when they

  2460. go to

  2461. David

  2462. verse 11

  2463. it says

  2464. how much

  2465. more

  2466. wicked men

  2467. have killed

  2468. a righteous

  2469. man in

  2470. his own

  2471. house on

  2472. his bed

  2473. shall I

  2474. not now

  2475. require his

  2476. blood at

  2477. your hand

  2478. and destroy

  2479. you from

  2480. the earth

  2481. and David

  2482. commanded

  2483. these young

  2484. men and

  2485. they killed

  2486. them and

  2487. cut off their

  2488. hands and feet

  2489. and hanged

  2490. them beside

  2491. the pool at

  2492. Hebron

  2493. in a billboard

  2494. poster of what

  2495. happens when

  2496. you try and

  2497. take the law

  2498. into your own

  2499. hands and when

  2500. you act against

  2501. Saul in my

  2502. name

  2503. David says

  2504. he cut off

  2505. their hands

  2506. and feet

  2507. why their

  2508. hands and

  2509. feet

  2510. well

  2511. there's going

  2512. to be no

  2513. more sneaking

  2514. or stabbing

  2515. is there

  2516. so that's

  2517. things to

  2518. keep in mind

  2519. Hebrew

  2520. narrative

  2521. what is

  2522. unsaid

  2523. who should

  2524. we place

  2525. this character

  2526. against

  2527. in order to

  2528. understand

  2529. him or

  2530. her

  2531. fully

  2532. David and

  2533. Jonathan

  2534. we've had a

  2535. lot of

  2536. David and

  2537. Jonathan

  2538. in 1

  2539. Samuel

  2540. but

  2541. the beginning

  2542. of 2

  2543. Samuel

  2544. Samuel

  2545. 1

  2546. verses

  2547. 25

  2548. and 26

  2549. this is

  2550. after

  2551. Jonathan

  2552. has died

  2553. David

  2554. laments

  2555. for Saul

  2556. and

  2557. Jonathan

  2558. and he

  2559. says

  2560. verse 25

  2561. how the

  2562. mighty

  2563. have

  2564. fallen

  2565. in the

  2566. midst

  2567. of

  2568. battle

  2569. Jonathan

  2570. lies

  2571. slain

  2572. on your

  2573. high

  2574. places

  2575. I am

  2576. distressed

  2577. for you

  2578. my brother

  2579. Jonathan

  2580. very pleasant

  2581. have you

  2582. been to me

  2583. your love

  2584. to me

  2585. was extraordinary

  2586. surpassing

  2587. the love

  2588. of women

  2589. so this is a

  2590. greater love

  2591. than love

  2592. between men

  2593. and women

  2594. so therefore

  2595. how could we

  2596. possibly say

  2597. it is

  2598. not right

  2599. but the real

  2600. issue there is

  2601. fidelity

  2602. and devotion

  2603. it's faithfulness

  2604. not

  2605. sexuality

  2606. this might

  2607. come up in

  2608. your groups

  2609. so it's

  2610. worth touching

  2611. on it

  2612. Matthew Henry

  2613. wrote in his

  2614. commentary on

  2615. this he had

  2616. reason to say

  2617. that Jonathan's

  2618. love to him

  2619. was wonderful

  2620. surely never

  2621. was the like

  2622. for a man to

  2623. love one who

  2624. he knew was

  2625. to take the

  2626. crown over

  2627. his head

  2628. and to be so

  2629. faithful to his

  2630. rival

  2631. this far

  2632. surpassed the

  2633. highest degree

  2634. of conjugal

  2635. affection and

  2636. constancy

  2637. so

  2638. no it is

  2639. not

  2640. legitimizing

  2641. homosexual

  2642. relationships

  2643. it is about

  2644. the fact that

  2645. Jonathan would

  2646. have been the

  2647. natural heir

  2648. and he

  2649. was faithful

  2650. to David

  2651. to the end

  2652. that is

  2653. what it's

  2654. about

  2655. the question

  2656. why does

  2657. David

  2658. X

  2659. why does

  2660. David

  2661. do Y

  2662. we get that

  2663. time and

  2664. time again

  2665. in 2 Samuel

  2666. in a lot of

  2667. David's life

  2668. David is not

  2669. always right

  2670. and the

  2671. writer of

  2672. Samuel is

  2673. honest about

  2674. that

  2675. he portrays

  2676. all of

  2677. David's

  2678. warts

  2679. and the

  2680. message is

  2681. there that

  2682. all human

  2683. leadership is

  2684. flawed and

  2685. 1 and 2 Samuel

  2686. is honest about

  2687. that

  2688. why does

  2689. David do

  2690. things?

  2691. because he's a

  2692. sinful man

  2693. like all of

  2694. us

  2695. and even

  2696. though he

  2697. has this

  2698. grace of

  2699. God making

  2700. his covenant

  2701. to him

  2702. that does

  2703. not make

  2704. him perfect

  2705. so we

  2706. shouldn't

  2707. try and

  2708. kind of

  2709. fall into

  2710. the trap

  2711. of having

  2712. to try and

  2713. justify

  2714. what David

  2715. does sometimes

  2716. I mean

  2717. Bathsheba and

  2718. Uriah

  2719. prime example

  2720. and that

  2721. sets up

  2722. almost the

  2723. bulk of

  2724. 2 Samuel

  2725. comes from

  2726. that

  2727. but the

  2728. question is

  2729. is there

  2730. repentance

  2731. when he

  2732. does these

  2733. things?

  2734. and that's

  2735. the big

  2736. contrast with

  2737. Saul

  2738. Saul was

  2739. not

  2740. repentant

  2741. when Samuel

  2742. confronted him

  2743. why did

  2744. you come

  2745. and bring

  2746. an offering?

  2747. then he

  2748. wasn't

  2749. repentant at

  2750. all

  2751. when David

  2752. sins

  2753. when Nathan

  2754. comes to

  2755. him he

  2756. says I

  2757. have sinned

  2758. against

  2759. the Lord

  2760. immediately

  2761. and repents

  2762. and turns

  2763. back

  2764. and does

  2765. what he

  2766. can to

  2767. show that

  2768. 2 Samuel

  2769. 12

  2770. 13

  2771. that is

  2772. like I

  2773. said

  2774. that is

  2775. David

  2776. repenting

  2777. Nathan

  2778. coming to

  2779. him and

  2780. he says

  2781. I've

  2782. sinned

  2783. against the

  2784. Lord

  2785. and that's

  2786. all he

  2787. says

  2788. it's not

  2789. trying to

  2790. argue away

  2791. what he

  2792. did

  2793. it's not

  2794. trying to

  2795. make excuses

  2796. so we

  2797. don't have

  2798. to do that

  2799. either

  2800. ultimately

  2801. grace is

  2802. greater than

  2803. our sin

  2804. and that

  2805. comes out

  2806. through

  2807. David's

  2808. story

  2809. the fact

  2810. that God

  2811. still deals

  2812. graciously

  2813. with him

  2814. time after

  2815. time after

  2816. time

  2817. eternal

  2818. kingdom

  2819. that might

  2820. come up

  2821. 2 Samuel

  2822. 7

  2823. like I

  2824. said

  2825. covenant

  2826. being

  2827. established

  2828. and God

  2829. says

  2830. verse 13

  2831. for example

  2832. I shall

  2833. build a

  2834. house for

  2835. my name

  2836. and I

  2837. will

  2838. establish

  2839. the throne

  2840. of his

  2841. kingdom

  2842. forever

  2843. I will

  2844. be to

  2845. my father

  2846. and he

  2847. will be

  2848. to me

  2849. a son

  2850. when he

  2851. commits

  2852. iniquity

  2853. I will

  2854. discipline

  2855. him

  2856. with the

  2857. rod of

  2858. men

  2859. and the

  2860. son

  2861. of

  2862. men

  2863. and that's

  2864. like I

  2865. said

  2866. isn't it

  2867. the servant

  2868. under the

  2869. rod of

  2870. God

  2871. is then

  2872. that middle

  2873. section

  2874. but yeah

  2875. your house

  2876. and your

  2877. kingdom

  2878. will be

  2879. made for

  2880. sure

  2881. will be

  2882. made sure

  2883. forever

  2884. before me

  2885. forever

  2886. forever

  2887. forever

  2888. so that

  2889. might come

  2890. up

  2891. people say

  2892. well

  2893. obviously

  2894. David

  2895. died

  2896. Solomon

  2897. died

  2898. the kings

  2899. after that

  2900. died

  2901. eventually

  2902. the kingdom

  2903. was lost

  2904. and they went

  2905. into exile

  2906. what about

  2907. that

  2908. we know

  2909. that is

  2910. because

  2911. Jesus

  2912. is

  2913. at the

  2914. moment

  2915. seated

  2916. at the

  2917. right hand

  2918. of God

  2919. on this

  2920. throne

  2921. that God

  2922. established

  2923. ruining and

  2924. reigning

  2925. for all

  2926. eternity

  2927. but it

  2928. might come

  2929. up

  2930. in her

  2931. grips

  2932. when someone

  2933. asks

  2934. but how

  2935. does that

  2936. work

  2937. but the

  2938. good thing

  2939. about that

  2940. and

  2941. the good

  2942. thing for

  2943. us is

  2944. there's

  2945. a song

  2946. about that

  2947. and that's

  2948. the end

  2949. of what

  2950. I have to

  2951. say about

  2952. Samuel for

  2953. tonight

  2954. ending

  2955. Thank you.
