  1. I'll turn to Matthew chapter 19, Matthew 19, and I want to look at verses 13-15.

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  2. ! We've slowed down in this early part of Matthew 19, just so I think it's helpful to look at

  3. ! these things. Matthew 19 and verses 13-15 is on page 824. Jesus loves the little children.

  4. I think it's fair to say that children in our culture occupy a position of extremes.

  5. My children are catered for unlike any previous generation. So I think for example the massive

  6. industry of early education, children's entertainment, all targeted at little people, aren't they?

  7. There are lucrative targets for marketing. Food that's targeted at little children. Clothing

  8. brands, games. And then on the other hand, many children in our day are overlooked, neglected,

  9. and abused. Abortion. And the question that we're going to look at tonight is who will care

  10. for the children? Who will cater for their immortal souls? Bishop Jason Ryle says, who even notices

  11. that each infant possesses within its little body an undying principle that will outlive the pyramids

  12. of Egypt and see the sun and moon quenched on the last day? Who will address their greatest need of all their

  13. immortal souls? And the answer to that question is Jesus Christ. Christ, the omnipotent Son of God, and the

  14. creator of all things, the sustainer and upholder of the universe, spends down and cuddles little babies.

  15. It's a marvellous thought, isn't it? And it is his glory that the slightest of all

  16. should get

  17. particular attention.

  18. The weakest and the most vulnerable and the most overlooked of all,

  19. Jesus loves the little children.

  20. Let's think about these three verses, three headings.

  21. Bringing the little children,

  22. forbidding the little children,

  23. blessing the little children.

  24. Now bring me the little children. Verse 13.

  25. Then children were brought to him,

  26. that he might lay his hands on them,

  27. literally bless them,

  28. and pray for them.

  29. And the disciples rebuked the people bringing the children,

  30. the parents.

  31. Remember the context Jesus has been giving us,

  32. the really practical teaching on the subject of marriage,

  33. and of divorce and of singleness.

  34. That's a really fairly obvious place to go next,

  35. isn't it, children?

  36. And think about who is being brought to

  37. Jesus' children.

  38. Little children.

  39. The word literally here in Matthew

  40. can refer to anything from newborn infants

  41. to small children,

  42. to toddlers,

  43. and so on.

  44. But Luke is even more explicit in his account.

  45. He says, Luke 18, verse 15,

    Luke 18:15

  46. they will bring even infants to him

  47. that he might touch them.

  48. Babies in arms, presumably.

  49. Brought by their parents

  50. to Jesus.

  51. And we have to ask him,

  52. why were they brought to Jesus?

  53. And we're told,

  54. that he might lay his hands on them

  55. and pray for them.

  56. And we need to recognise

  57. this is not like an American politician

  58. where the baby is kind of given to the politician.

  59. It's not like that.

  60. It's not in a kind of,

  61. if, let's say,

  62. Wales won the World Cup

  63. and I take Phoebe to Cardiff

  64. for the open top bus parade

  65. and I get her to be held

  66. by one of the players.

  67. That's not going to happen.

  68. But that's not what's happening here either.

  69. These are not

  70. simple, uneducated people

  71. coming to some well-known miracle worker,

  72. some celebrity,

  73. hoping that he's going to give them

  74. some magic touch.

  75. It's not superstitious.

  76. If it was superstitious,

  77. what would Jesus have done?

  78. Jesus would have stopped them

  79. and rebuked them

  80. and sent them to write,

  81. but these are

  82. old covenant believers.

  83. They've come to recognise

  84. that in Jesus of Nazareth,

  85. they've come to see who he is.

  86. And they want to seek

  87. his priestly benediction.

  88. That's the word blessing.

  89. And his blessing

  90. on their covenant children.

  91. So this is more than

  92. some kind of baby dedication.

  93. Some kind of sentimental,

  94. well-wishing ceremony

  95. for the kids.

  96. What those parents desire

  97. is a personal encounter

  98. with Jesus Christ.

  99. And that will issue forth

  100. in them being blessed.

  101. Blessed in all the fullness

  102. of the blessing of God.

  103. Being brought into blessing.

  104. Salvation.

  105. Now if that is what is happening here,

  106. what does this account tell us

  107. about their children?

  108. what does this little story

  109. tell us about little children?

  110. Well, shoot,

  111. it's really obvious, isn't it?

  112. It's really obvious

  113. that little children

  114. need Jesus.

  115. Little children need Jesus.

  116. Little children have

  117. sinful hearts.

  118. They come into the world

  119. with the children of Adam.

  120. And they bear the guilt

  121. of original sin.

  122. There are fewer things,

  123. aren't there,

  124. more glorious in life

  125. than the birth of a new baby.

  126. A new life.

  127. A new life brought

  128. into the world.

  129. And yet,

  130. such babies,

  131. the Bible tells us,

  132. are born,

  133. spiritually speaking,

  134. stillborn.

  135. And they come into this world

  136. and came to them by sin.

  137. We find that so hard

  138. to accept,

  139. don't they?

  140. And so,

  141. they come to Jesus

  142. and they need Jesus.

  143. You see,

  144. to lay his hands upon them

  145. and impart to them

  146. spiritual life.

  147. Let me read to you

  148. from Westminster,

  149. the Shorter Catechism.

  150. wherein consists

  151. the sinfulness

  152. of that estate

  153. wherein to man fell.

  154. Here's the answer.

  155. The sinfulness

  156. of that estate

  157. wherein to man fell.

  158. This is where man fell.

  159. Consists in the guilt

  160. of Adam's first sin,

  161. the want of original righteousness,

  162. the corruption

  163. of his whole nature,

  164. which is commonly called

  165. original sin,

  166. together with all

  167. actual transgressions

  168. which proceed from it.

  169. And many people

  170. would read that

  171. or you'd hear that

  172. and say,

  173. well, of course,

  174. actual transgressions

  175. that proceed from it.

  176. There you go.

  177. The little baby

  178. hasn't committed

  179. any transgressions.

  180. These little babies

  181. can't commit any transgressions

  182. on their own.

  183. They're so little,

  184. beautiful,

  185. innocent things,

  186. aren't they?

  187. To which,

  188. of course,

  189. we have to say no.

  190. Because even little ones

  191. have inherited

  192. Adam's corrupt nature.

  193. And as Paul says

  194. in Romans 5,

    Romans 5:19

  195. verse 19,

  196. by one man's disobedience,

  197. the many

  198. were made sinners.

  199. Do you remember,

  200. children,

  201. we did it,

  202. didn't we,

  203. with the dominoes

  204. and we did the children's talk

  205. on that question

  206. and one domino

  207. sets off

  208. all the other dominoes.

  209. And so little children

  210. share in the guilt

  211. of Adam's sin,

  212. but as Paul continues,

  213. also by one man's obedience,

  214. many will be made righteous.

  215. And that's why

  216. little children

  217. need Jesus.

  218. He is the man

  219. and by his obedience

  220. they too

  221. can be made righteous.

  222. So little children

  223. need Jesus.

  224. But we should also

  225. see here tonight

  226. very, very simply

  227. that little children

  228. should be brought

  229. to Jesus.

  230. Little children

  231. must be brought

  232. to Jesus.

  233. It goes without saying,

  234. doesn't it,

  235. that little babies

  236. cannot bring themselves

  237. to him.

  238. They need Jesus

  239. to pray for them

  240. because they cannot

  241. pray for themselves.

  242. Little children,

  243. little babies

  244. cannot pray

  245. the sinner's prayer.

  246. The sinner's prayer

  247. is not what saves

  248. either adults

  249. or infants.

  250. You see,

  251. what actually saves us

  252. is the priestly

  253. work of the Lord Jesus.

  254. Where we confess

  255. that we are saved

  256. by Christ alone

  257. and by his life

  258. and his death

  259. and his atonement

  260. and his intercession.

  261. And he gives that

  262. salvation

  263. sovereignly

  264. and graciously

  265. to whomever he wills

  266. and that includes

  267. little children.

  268. Notice here

  269. that the ignorance

  270. and the incapacity

  271. of little children

  272. is no barrier.

  273. It's no barrier

  274. to their personally

  275. receiving the benefits

  276. of the covenant

  277. of grace.

  278. Any more than

  279. an adult

  280. who's got a mental

  281. disability

  282. for them

  283. to be eligible

  284. for salvation.

  285. You just need

  286. to be a sinner.

  287. A sinner.

  288. Salvation is not

  289. dependent upon

  290. your age.

  291. It's not dependent

  292. on your earthly status.

  293. That's the message

  294. of the next passage,

  295. isn't it,

  296. in Matthew 19,

  297. the rich young ruler.

  298. What it depends on

  299. is your need

  300. of salvation

  301. as a son

  302. or a daughter

  303. of Adam.

  304. And that's not

  305. ignoring

  306. justification

  307. by faith

  308. that we are

  309. made right

  310. by trusting

  311. in Christ

  312. and declared

  313. right by God.

  314. That as little

  315. ones come of age

  316. in the Christian

  317. home,

  318. the reality

  319. of their

  320. inclusion

  321. in the covenant

  322. that they are

  323. part of the covenant

  324. people will

  325. be seen

  326. in them

  327. exercising

  328. faith and

  329. repentance

  330. just as

  331. adults do.

  332. It very well

  333. might not be

  334. dramatic.

  335. But in anticipation

  336. of that,

  337. children must be

  338. brought to Jesus

  339. on the arms

  340. of their parents'

  341. faith.

  342. Because if little

  343. children are not

  344. brought,

  345. they never will be.

  346. That's what we

  347. learn about little

  348. children in this text.

  349. But what does it

  350. say about parents?

  351. Well,

  352. parents must

  353. believe

  354. the promises

  355. of the covenant

  356. of grace.

  357. They must

  358. believe

  359. the promises

  360. of the covenant

  361. of grace,

  362. of God's

  363. promise

  364. and pledge.

  365. These little

  366. children are

  367. brought to Jesus

  368. on the arms

  369. of their parents'

  370. faith.

  371. We've already

  372. contended that

  373. these people

  374. were Old

  375. Testament believers

  376. who understood

  377. that the covenant

  378. of grace

  379. extends to

  380. their children

  381. also.

  382. Genesis

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  383. chapter 17

  384. and verse 7.

  385. Let me read it

  386. to you.

  387. And I will

  388. establish my

  389. covenant

  390. between me

  391. and you

  392. and your

  393. offspring after

  394. you throughout

  395. their generations

  396. for an

  397. everlasting

  398. covenant

  399. to be

  400. God

  401. to you

  402. and to

  403. your offspring

  404. after you.

  405. So I

  406. cross the

  407. apostle Paul

  408. Corinthians 7

  409. verse 14

  410. says that the

  411. children of

  412. unbelievers

  413. are unclean.

  414. Whereas the

  415. children of

  416. believers are

  417. holy.

  418. And so what

  419. you have in

  420. this passage

  421. is excellent

  422. parental

  423. role models.

  424. they have

  425. faith in

  426. the covenant

  427. promise and

  428. they act

  429. upon that

  430. faith.

  431. And this

  432. faith is not

  433. a shrink

  434. wrapped

  435. compartment

  436. of their

  437. life.

  438. Here's my

  439. religious life

  440. over here

  441. and here is

  442. my parenting

  443. techniques.

  444. Their faith

  445. is driving

  446. their parenting.

  447. And Christian

  448. parents they

  449. have liberty

  450. conscience

  451. like we

  452. talked about

  453. with dating

  454. this morning.

  455. Our Christian

  456. parents have

  457. liberty of

  458. conscience.

  459. We can

  460. differ on

  461. styles of

  462. parenting.

  463. That's okay.

  464. Methods of

  465. education.

  466. That's okay.

  467. Discipline.

  468. How we

  469. discipline.

  470. But all

  471. Christian parents

  472. should be

  473. united in

  474. this.

  475. They should

  476. be united in

  477. this that

  478. they are

  479. trusting the

  480. covenant

  481. promises of

  482. God.

  483. And they're

  484. trusting the

  485. covenant

  486. promises of

  487. God for

  488. themselves.

  489. Yes.

  490. But also

  491. for their

  492. children.

  493. And so it

  494. follows by way

  495. of application

  496. parents bring

  497. your children

  498. to Jesus.

  499. And that

  500. goes for

  501. you that

  502. have adult

  503. children.

  504. I'm sure

  505. that you do

  506. bring them

  507. to Jesus.

  508. I know

  509. that.

  510. You bring

  511. them to

  512. Jesus in

  513. prayer all

  514. the time.

  515. And maybe

  516. tonight you're

  517. saying you don't

  518. have children

  519. but you know

  520. children.

  521. let's bring

  522. the little

  523. children to

  524. Jesus.

  525. They have

  526. immortal

  527. souls and

  528. they need

  529. to be

  530. saved.

  531. And they

  532. have a

  533. mighty

  534. saviour who

  535. welcomes the

  536. weakest

  537. child.

  538. So you

  539. knew who was

  540. coming.

  541. Therefore

  542. parents present

  543. your children

  544. for baptism.

  545. Recognize

  546. their status

  547. as children

  548. of the

  549. covenant and

  550. obtain for

  551. them the

  552. outward sign

  553. and seal

  554. of that

  555. covenant.

  556. You claim

  557. that promise

  558. and then you

  559. bring them

  560. up in the

  561. training and

  562. the admonition

  563. of the

  564. Lord.

  565. Ephesians

    Ephesians 6:4

  566. 6 verse

  567. 4.

  568. Do you

  569. believe that?

  570. Do we really

  571. believe that our

  572. children are

  573. covenant

  574. children and

  575. not pagan

  576. children?

  577. But they're

  578. not strangers

  579. to the covenant

  580. promise of

  581. Ephesians 2

    Ephesians 2:12

  582. verse 12

  583. but rather

  584. they are

  585. recipients

  586. of all

  587. the means

  588. of grace

  589. bestowed upon

  590. the Christian

  591. home and

  592. the visible

  593. church.

  594. This is what

  595. the text says

  596. about little

  597. children and

  598. about parents

  599. but what does

  600. the text say

  601. about Jesus?

  602. We'll come

  603. back to what

  604. I just said.

  605. It says

  606. that Jesus

  607. has something

  608. to give

  609. little children.

  610. Jesus has

  611. something to give

  612. to little

  613. children that

  614. the parents of

  615. these children

  616. cannot give.

  617. You see

  618. parents can

  619. give life

  620. can't you?

  621. You can

  622. make provision

  623. you can

  624. materially

  625. provide for

  626. your children

  627. give them

  628. sustenance.

  629. Parents can

  630. even bring

  631. their children

  632. to the

  633. saviour.

  634. Parents can

  635. point their

  636. children to

  637. the saviour

  638. by the means

  639. of grace

  640. as we've

  641. just seen

  642. but parents

  643. cannot give

  644. their children

  645. new hearts.

  646. Can you?

  647. There's no

  648. doubt that

  649. these parents

  650. in our

  651. story had

  652. themselves

  653. put their

  654. hands upon

  655. the children

  656. and prayed

  657. for them.

  658. But it is

  659. Jesus' touch

  660. that these

  661. children need.

  662. It is Jesus'

  663. blessing.

  664. It is Jesus'

  665. intercession.

  666. That is what

  667. these parents

  668. can give.

  669. John Trapp

  670. was a Puritan.

  671. He had 12

  672. children,

  673. four of whom

  674. died in

  675. childhood.

  676. And he

  677. commented on

  678. this passage.

  679. He says,

  680. we must

  681. present our

  682. children to

  683. Christ by

  684. training them

  685. up in

  686. God's holy

  687. fear,

  688. beseeching

  689. God to

  690. persuade their

  691. hearts.

  692. For we

  693. may speak

  694. persuasively,

  695. but God

  696. only persuades.

  697. As Rebecca

  698. cooked the

  699. meat, but

  700. it was Isaac

  701. only who

  702. gave the

  703. blessing.

  704. parents to

  705. be unsparingly

  706. active and

  707. diligent in

  708. the use of

  709. means.

  710. But they

  711. must also

  712. passively wait

  713. in full

  714. dependence and

  715. trust upon

  716. the Lord,

  717. the blessing

  718. giver, to

  719. bestow his

  720. salvation on

  721. their children

  722. in his good

  723. time.

  724. So much

  725. then,

  726. after braiding

  727. the little

  728. children.

  729. Secondly,

  730. let's move

  731. on to

  732. forbidding the

  733. little children.

  734. Let's look at

  735. the second part

  736. of verses

  737. 13 and 14.

  738. the disciples

  739. rebuked the

  740. people.

  741. But Jesus

  742. said, let

  743. the little

  744. children come

  745. to me and

  746. do not hinder

  747. them, for

  748. such belongs

  749. the kingdom

  750. of heaven.

  751. And we

  752. read, don't

  753. we, it's a

  754. very strong

  755. word at the

  756. end of verse

  757. 13, the

  758. disciples

  759. rebuked

  760. them.

  761. That is to

  762. say, they

  763. rebuked the

  764. parents who

  765. were bringing

  766. the children

  767. in verse

  768. 13.

  769. So the

  770. amazing thing

  771. is that here

  772. are Jesus'

  773. closest friends

  774. and they

  775. stand between

  776. the parents

  777. and the

  778. source of

  779. blessing for

  780. their children.

  781. I think it's

  782. hard to

  783. imagine a

  784. more discouraging

  785. thing than

  786. verse 13.

  787. these parents

  788. in this

  789. situation.

  790. They would

  791. scratch our

  792. heads and

  793. say, why

  794. the stern

  795. rebuke for

  796. these loving

  797. parents from

  798. the disciples?

  799. You read the

  800. commentators,

  801. they're all

  802. over the map

  803. on this.

  804. Maybe the

  805. disciples felt

  806. that Jesus

  807. was too

  808. busy, too

  809. important for

  810. their own

  811. children.

  812. It's quite

  813. possible.

  814. That this

  815. prejudice is

  816. coming in

  817. here.

  818. There's lots

  819. of talk about

  820. the culture.

  821. But actually

  822. we don't have

  823. to guess the

  824. reason it's

  825. given to us

  826. in verse 14.

  827. Jesus shows

  828. us that

  829. the disciples

  830. have got a

  831. theological

  832. problem.

  833. That's the

  834. issue.

  835. As well as

  836. the prejudicial

  837. one.

  838. And their

  839. issue is not

  840. so much with

  841. the parents,

  842. but it is

  843. with their

  844. view of the

  845. children.

  846. And Jesus

  847. shows in

  848. verse 14

  849. that the

  850. disciples,

  851. when they

  852. rebuke the

  853. parents,

  854. secondly,

  855. they forbid

  856. the little

  857. children.

  858. And let

  859. me say

  860. that again.

  861. The

  862. disciples are

  863. rebuking the

  864. parents, but

  865. in so doing,

  866. what the

  867. disciples are

  868. doing is

  869. they are

  870. forbidding the

  871. little children.

  872. Can you see

  873. the connection?

  874. Jesus says,

  875. don't hit them,

  876. hinder them,

  877. don't forbid

  878. them.

  879. That's obviously

  880. what they were

  881. doing.

  882. Look closely at

  883. what the text

  884. says.

  885. It says the

  886. disciples rebuked

  887. them, that is

  888. the parents, but

  889. Jesus said,

  890. let the little

  891. children come to

  892. me and do

  893. not forbid

  894. them.

  895. You wouldn't

  896. say that unless

  897. they were

  898. forbidding them.

  899. Because the

  900. little children

  901. of such is the

  902. kingdom of

  903. heaven.

  904. Do you see

  905. the implication

  906. of what's

  907. being said?

  908. The disciples

  909. are assuming

  910. that little

  911. children are

  912. not of the

  913. kingdom of

  914. heaven.

  915. They have a

  916. theological

  917. problem.

  918. They have a

  919. wrong theology

  920. of little

  921. children, if

  922. you want to

  923. put it that

  924. way.

  925. They assume

  926. that these

  927. little ones,

  928. they are

  929. incapable of

  930. being subjects

  931. of the

  932. king.

  933. They are

  934. too little

  935. to understand.

  936. For what

  937. they did not

  938. understand, and

  939. what they did

  940. not reckon, is

  941. that this

  942. king does

  943. not overlook

  944. even the

  945. weakest of

  946. his subjects.

  947. Even the

  948. tiniest.

  949. In fact, Jesus

  950. has been

  951. warning them,

  952. chapter 18,

  953. about putting

  954. stumbling

  955. blocks in the

  956. way of the

  957. most vulnerable

  958. and overlooked

  959. people.

  960. You remember

  961. back in

  962. 18, verses

  963. 5 and 6,

  964. whoever receives

  965. one such child,

  966. one such little

  967. one in my

  968. name receives

  969. me, but

  970. whoever causes

  971. one of these

  972. little ones

  973. who believe

  974. in me to

  975. sin, it

  976. would be

  977. better for

  978. him to

  979. have a

  980. great millstone

  981. fastened

  982. around his

  983. neck, and

  984. be drowned

  985. in the

  986. depths of

  987. the sea.

  988. So take

  989. heed.

  990. And then

  991. verse 10,

  992. see to it

  993. then that

  994. none of you

  995. despise one

  996. of these

  997. little ones.

  998. And again,

  999. we shake

  1000. our heads

  1001. and say

  1002. these are

  1003. short

  1004. memories,

  1005. didn't

  1006. they?

  1007. they rebuked

  1008. the parents

  1009. and the

  1010. disciples are

  1011. forbidding the

  1012. children.

  1013. And then

  1014. the disciples

  1015. are rebuked

  1016. by Jesus.

  1017. A.B.

  1018. Bruce says,

  1019. our Lord did

  1020. not thank his

  1021. disciples for

  1022. thus guarding

  1023. his person from

  1024. the intrusion

  1025. like a band of

  1026. overzealous

  1027. policemen.

  1028. Our Lord did

  1029. not thank them.

  1030. In fact,

  1031. Mark 10,

    Mark 10:14

  1032. verse 14,

  1033. says that

  1034. Jesus was

  1035. greatly

  1036. displeased.

  1037. In Matthew's

  1038. account,

  1039. that kind of

  1040. displeasure is

  1041. shown by a

  1042. public

  1043. contradiction

  1044. of the

  1045. disciples'

  1046. attitude.

  1047. There they

  1048. are with

  1049. the multitude.

  1050. No,

  1051. no,

  1052. you can't

  1053. bring them

  1054. here and

  1055. Jesus cuts

  1056. them off.

  1057. It's very

  1058. embarrassing

  1059. for the

  1060. disciples.

  1061. Jesus is

  1062. most displeased

  1063. when we put

  1064. stumbling blocks

  1065. in the way of

  1066. little children

  1067. coming to him.

  1068. And again,

  1069. we say,

  1070. how can the

  1071. disciples be

  1072. so mean?

  1073. In what

  1074. ways can

  1075. each of us

  1076. do the

  1077. same thing?

  1078. How can

  1079. the little

  1080. children be

  1081. forbidden,

  1082. even by

  1083. well-meaning

  1084. disciples of

  1085. the day?

  1086. Well,

  1087. one way it

  1088. can happen

  1089. is quite

  1090. simple.

  1091. It's by

  1092. erecting

  1093. theological

  1094. barriers.

  1095. So,

  1096. it's easy

  1097. to point

  1098. a Roman

  1099. Catholic

  1100. theology.

  1101. The Roman

  1102. Catholic

  1103. catechism

  1104. says,

  1105. by baptism

  1106. all sins

  1107. are forgiven,

  1108. original

  1109. sin,

  1110. all personal

  1111. sin,

  1112. as well

  1113. as all

  1114. personal

  1115. sin.

  1116. Well,

  1117. if that

  1118. happened at

  1119. baptism,

  1120. why do you

  1121. need Jesus?

  1122. Why would

  1123. you come

  1124. to Jesus?

  1125. I grew

  1126. up as

  1127. a

  1128. Baptist.

  1129. and

  1130. children

  1131. of

  1132. believers,

  1133. if you

  1134. push them

  1135. out,

  1136. although

  1137. thankfully

  1138. their

  1139. practice

  1140. is a

  1141. lot

  1142. better

  1143. than

  1144. their

  1145. theology,

  1146. if you

  1147. push them,

  1148. children are

  1149. often regarded

  1150. as not

  1151. different

  1152. from pagans

  1153. and stators.

  1154. They can't

  1155. be saved

  1156. until they

  1157. profess faith

  1158. and are

  1159. baptised.

  1160. There's this

  1161. really mysterious

  1162. age of

  1163. accountability

  1164. that's been

  1165. invented and

  1166. seems to

  1167. change from

  1168. author to

  1169. author.

  1170. And before

  1171. which point,

  1172. before the

  1173. age of

  1174. accountability,

  1175. whatever that

  1176. is,

  1177. all children

  1178. go to

  1179. heaven.

  1180. And of

  1181. course,

  1182. Jesus might

  1183. well have

  1184. sent these

  1185. children

  1186. packing,

  1187. mightn't he?

  1188. And he

  1189. might have

  1190. said,

  1191. oh listen,

  1192. can you

  1193. bring them

  1194. back to

  1195. me when

  1196. they've

  1197. reached

  1198. the age

  1199. of

  1200. accountability?

  1201. They're

  1202. good to

  1203. go then.

  1204. Now,

  1205. what he

  1206. does is

  1207. very different

  1208. isn't it?

  1209. But closer

  1210. to home,

  1211. I think we

  1212. can adapt.

  1213. We can

  1214. adopt practical

  1215. barriers.

  1216. We run

  1217. the same

  1218. risk.

  1219. More often

  1220. than not,

  1221. we can

  1222. fail to

  1223. instruct our

  1224. children.

  1225. Remember that

  1226. baptismal vow we

  1227. ask of parents

  1228. that they will

  1229. teach their

  1230. children?

  1231. They will set a

  1232. good example.

  1233. We may of

  1234. course fall short

  1235. by neglecting to

  1236. teach them at

  1237. all.

  1238. We may

  1239. forbid the

  1240. little children

  1241. by discouraging

  1242. their involvement

  1243. in the life

  1244. of the

  1245. church.

  1246. So we

  1247. believe,

  1248. don't we,

  1249. that preaching

  1250. is a means

  1251. of grace.

  1252. It's how

  1253. God chooses

  1254. to strengthen

  1255. our faith.

  1256. And so,

  1257. as you know,

  1258. we are against

  1259. children being

  1260. sent out of

  1261. worship.

  1262. because we

  1263. want children

  1264. to have

  1265. access to

  1266. the means

  1267. of grace.

  1268. They want

  1269. to understand

  1270. everything.

  1271. This is

  1272. children's

  1273. church.

  1274. Let the

  1275. little children

  1276. come to me.

  1277. They are

  1278. covenant

  1279. members,

  1280. and as

  1281. members of

  1282. the visible

  1283. church,

  1284. and how

  1285. easy it

  1286. is to

  1287. view

  1288. children

  1289. as a

  1290. nuisance.

  1291. Listen,

  1292. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 5:14

  1293. 5 verse

  1294. 14,

  1295. Paul says,

  1296. we urge

  1297. you brothers,

  1298. admonish the

  1299. idle,

  1300. encourage the

  1301. faint-hearted,

  1302. help the

  1303. weak,

  1304. be patient

  1305. with them

  1306. all.

  1307. And

  1308. children

  1309. need

  1310. patience

  1311. sometimes,

  1312. don't

  1313. they?

  1314. Children

  1315. need

  1316. patience

  1317. from

  1318. parents

  1319. and the

  1320. church.

  1321. And so

  1322. when they're

  1323. being trained

  1324. for worship

  1325. and their

  1326. noisy,

  1327. we must

  1328. not

  1329. harumph.

  1330. You know,

  1331. churches,

  1332. we see that

  1333. sometimes,

  1334. when there's

  1335. a noisy

  1336. child,

  1337. and the

  1338. poor

  1339. parent

  1340. maybe

  1341. doesn't

  1342. take them

  1343. out as

  1344. quickly as

  1345. they should,

  1346. and the

  1347. person

  1348. harumphs,

  1349. or just

  1350. glances

  1351. over.

  1352. But we

  1353. don't want

  1354. that,

  1355. be patient,

  1356. chill out,

  1357. alright?

  1358. Mums,

  1359. particularly

  1360. mums,

  1361. don't feel,

  1362. don't pull

  1363. up with

  1364. harumphing.

  1365. We're

  1366. very

  1367. grateful

  1368. to have

  1369. your

  1370. children

  1371. here.

  1372. Children

  1373. need

  1374. patience

  1375. from

  1376. parents,

  1377. don't

  1378. they?

  1379. And they

  1380. need

  1381. patience

  1382. from

  1383. the

  1384. church.

  1385. I'm

  1386. probably

  1387. more

  1388. like this,

  1389. we can

  1390. forbid the

  1391. little

  1392. children

  1393. by making

  1394. the way

  1395. of Jesus

  1396. seem

  1397. unpleasant.

  1398. By

  1399. making

  1400. the way

  1401. of Jesus

  1402. seem

  1403. unpleasant.

  1404. And of

  1405. course,

  1406. I know

  1407. that the

  1408. way of

  1409. Jesus

  1410. is a

  1411. narrow

  1412. way,

  1413. and there

  1414. is a

  1415. cross

  1416. which we

  1417. must

  1418. take up

  1419. daily.

  1420. But we've

  1421. got to ask,

  1422. do our

  1423. lives and

  1424. discipline,

  1425. display great

  1426. grace to our

  1427. children,

  1428. do we show

  1429. that following

  1430. Jesus is

  1431. the best

  1432. life?

  1433. That his

  1434. yoke is

  1435. easy and

  1436. his burden

  1437. is light.

  1438. What do we

  1439. harden our

  1440. hearts against

  1441. the gospel

  1442. by legalism?

  1443. There are

  1444. little ones

  1445. out there

  1446. that have

  1447. been turned

  1448. away from

  1449. Jesus because

  1450. they've been

  1451. taught all

  1452. law and

  1453. they've not

  1454. been taught

  1455. as clearly

  1456. the gospel

  1457. of redeeming

  1458. grace.

  1459. It's

  1460. possible to

  1461. portray

  1462. God more

  1463. as a

  1464. threatening

  1465. judge than

  1466. as a

  1467. loving

  1468. father.

  1469. And if

  1470. we do

  1471. that we've

  1472. got the

  1473. gospel wrong.

  1474. Do we

  1475. model a

  1476. joyful

  1477. Christian

  1478. life and

  1479. show before

  1480. the little

  1481. ones that

  1482. the best

  1483. day of

  1484. all days

  1485. is Sunday,

  1486. the best

  1487. place to

  1488. be of

  1489. all places

  1490. to be,

  1491. is to be

  1492. with God's

  1493. people.

  1494. And the

  1495. best life

  1496. to live

  1497. is the

  1498. Christian

  1499. life.

  1500. And do

  1501. we urge

  1502. them to be

  1503. participants in

  1504. church or do

  1505. we make

  1506. it a

  1507. chore?

  1508. Do we

  1509. encourage

  1510. them simply

  1511. to be

  1512. spectators in

  1513. worship?

  1514. And all

  1515. of this is

  1516. forbidding the

  1517. little children.

  1518. Jesus loves

  1519. the little

  1520. children.

  1521. So let me

  1522. speak to the

  1523. little children

  1524. if you're

  1525. awake.

  1526. How can you

  1527. come to

  1528. Jesus?

  1529. Come to

  1530. Jesus by

  1531. going to

  1532. the places

  1533. where he

  1534. will meet

  1535. with you.

  1536. Jesus

  1537. already met

  1538. with you

  1539. when you

  1540. were

  1541. baptized.

  1542. You

  1543. don't

  1544. remember

  1545. that.

  1546. You

  1547. were

  1548. little

  1549. babies.

  1550. But now

  1551. you are

  1552. older,

  1553. you can

  1554. meet with

  1555. Jesus

  1556. when you

  1557. pray.

  1558. When you

  1559. pray you

  1560. find a

  1561. quiet place

  1562. to talk

  1563. to him.

  1564. When you

  1565. meet

  1566. Jesus

  1567. as he

  1568. reads

  1569. the

  1570. Bible.

  1571. You

  1572. read the

  1573. Bible.

  1574. Mum and

  1575. Dad,

  1576. when they

  1577. read the

  1578. Bible to

  1579. you,

  1580. what about

  1581. family

  1582. worship?

  1583. You ask

  1584. questions,

  1585. what does

  1586. that mean

  1587. Dad,

  1588. what does

  1589. that mean

  1590. Mum?

  1591. read the

  1592. Bible to

  1593. you.

  1594. When you

  1595. come here

  1596. to worship

  1597. in church,

  1598. I hope

  1599. you sing,

  1600. I hope

  1601. you pray,

  1602. I hope

  1603. you listen

  1604. well.

  1605. Because

  1606. Jesus

  1607. says,

  1608. all of

  1609. us need

  1610. to hear

  1611. this,

  1612. let the

  1613. little

  1614. children

  1615. come to

  1616. me.

  1617. And

  1618. this

  1619. is

  1620. your

  1621. church.

  1622. for

  1623. the

  1624. little

  1625. children

  1626. and

  1627. finally

  1628. blessing

  1629. the

  1630. little

  1631. children.

  1632. Let's

  1633. go back

  1634. to

  1635. verses

  1636. 14

  1637. and

  1638. 15.

  1639. But

  1640. Jesus

  1641. said,

  1642. let the

  1643. little

  1644. children

  1645. come to

  1646. me and

  1647. do not

  1648. hinder

  1649. them for

  1650. such

  1651. for

  1652. long as

  1653. the

  1654. kingdom

  1655. of

  1656. heaven.

  1657. And

  1658. he

  1659. laid

  1660. his

  1661. hands

  1662. on

  1663. them.

  1664. And

  1665. he

  1666. departed

  1667. from

  1668. there.

  1669. ran

  1670. away.

  1671. And

  1672. we've

  1673. seen

  1674. the

  1675. little

  1676. children

  1677. have

  1678. to

  1679. come

  1680. to

  1681. Jesus

  1682. on

  1683. the

  1684. arms

  1685. of

  1686. faith.

  1687. the

  1688. parents

  1689. disappointed.

  1690. And

  1691. the

  1692. son

  1693. of

  1694. God

  1695. bestows

  1696. on

  1697. these

  1698. little

  1699. ones

  1700. his

  1701. benediction.

  1702. He

  1703. blesses

  1704. the

  1705. little

  1706. children.

  1707. He

  1708. responds

  1709. to

  1710. the

  1711. faith

  1712. of

  1713. the

  1714. parents.

  1715. And

  1716. he

  1717. lays

  1718. his

  1719. hands

  1720. on

  1721. them.

  1722. Because

  1723. he

  1724. says,

  1725. of

  1726. such

  1727. are

  1728. the

  1729. kingdom

  1730. of

  1731. heaven.

  1732. He

  1733. doesn't

  1734. say,

  1735. theirs

  1736. is the

  1737. kingdom

  1738. of

  1739. heaven

  1740. when

  1741. they

  1742. reach

  1743. the

  1744. magical

  1745. age

  1746. of

  1747. accountability.

  1748. He

  1749. doesn't

  1750. say,

  1751. theirs

  1752. !

  1753. is the

  1754. kingdom

  1755. when

  1756. they

  1757. heaven

  1758. as

  1759. little

  1760. children.

  1761. What

  1762. does

  1763. the

  1764. kingdom

  1765. of

  1766. heaven

  1767. mean?

  1768. It

  1769. means

  1770. in

  1771. Matthew's

  1772. gospel

  1773. the

  1774. saving

  1775. rule

  1776. of

  1777. heaven

  1778. through

  1779. God's

  1780. appointed

  1781. King

  1782. Jesus

  1783. Christ.

  1784. So

  1785. to belong

  1786. to the

  1787. kingdom

  1788. is to be

  1789. a personal

  1790. subject

  1791. of

  1792. King

  1793. Jesus

  1794. Christ.

  1795. And

  1796. we

  1797. become

  1798. his

  1799. subject

  1800. not

  1801. because

  1802. of

  1803. something

  1804. we

  1805. do,

  1806. not

  1807. because

  1808. of

  1809. something

  1810. we

  1811. have

  1812. done,

  1813. rather

  1814. because

  1815. he

  1816. has

  1817. done

  1818. something.

  1819. He

  1820. has

  1821. blessed

  1822. us.

  1823. Let me

  1824. read to

  1825. you again

  1826. from

  1827. the

  1828. larger

  1829. catechism.

  1830. And let

  1831. me

  1832. read to

  1833. you

  1834. from

  1835. question

  1836. 62

  1837. about

  1838. who

  1839. is

  1840. part

  1841. of

  1842. the

  1843. church.

  1844. What

  1845. is the

  1846. visible

  1847. church?

  1848. The

  1849. visible

  1850. church,

  1851. what you

  1852. can see

  1853. in a

  1854. church is

  1855. a society

  1856. made up

  1857. of all

  1858. such as

  1859. in all

  1860. ages

  1861. and places

  1862. of the

  1863. world

  1864. to profess

  1865. the true

  1866. religion

  1867. and of

  1868. their

  1869. children.

  1870. And I

  1871. put it

  1872. to you,

  1873. if Jesus

  1874. says little

  1875. children are

  1876. subjects of

  1877. his kingdom,

  1878. then they

  1879. are to be

  1880. afforded the

  1881. privileges of

  1882. the kingdom,

  1883. the means of

  1884. grace to

  1885. bring them to

  1886. a full

  1887. understanding

  1888. of the

  1889. faith.

  1890. And of

  1891. course,

  1892. I want to

  1893. argue,

  1894. don't I,

  1895. that baptism

  1896. is the

  1897. means to

  1898. admittance,

  1899. that is the

  1900. entrance point

  1901. of participating

  1902. in those

  1903. blessings.

  1904. And at

  1905. this point,

  1906. the

  1907. Baptists

  1908. will say

  1909. to me,

  1910. hang on

  1911. a minute,

  1912. there's no

  1913. mention of

  1914. water baptism.

  1915. It's not

  1916. mentioned in

  1917. this text.

  1918. Why do you

  1919. pedo-baptists

  1920. always bring

  1921. water baptism

  1922. into Jesus'

  1923. blessing with

  1924. children?

  1925. And you're

  1926. right.

  1927. But I

  1928. don't

  1929. argue with

  1930. you that

  1931. you shouldn't

  1932. expect it

  1933. to be

  1934. mentioned

  1935. because the

  1936. sacrament of

  1937. baptism

  1938. doesn't come

  1939. until Matthew

    Matthew 28:19

  1940. 28 verse

  1941. 19,

  1942. when Jesus

  1943. institutes it.

  1944. Jesus

  1945. and this

  1946. passage is

  1947. not

  1948. illustrative

  1949. of infant

  1950. baptism,

  1951. but we

  1952. have to

  1953. say it

  1954. is

  1955. illustrative

  1956. of covenant

  1957. theology

  1958. that's behind

  1959. it.

  1960. The promise

  1961. of God.

  1962. We can

  1963. say and

  1964. argue that

  1965. all the

  1966. component

  1967. parts of

  1968. infant

  1969. baptism are

  1970. here minus

  1971. the water.

  1972. Parents

  1973. bringing their

  1974. children to

  1975. Jesus by

  1976. faith in the

  1977. promises of

  1978. the covenant

  1979. of grace.

  1980. Jesus

  1981. blessing each

  1982. child

  1983. individually,

  1984. bringing them

  1985. all the

  1986. privileges of

  1987. the visible

  1988. church.

  1989. And you

  1990. may ask,

  1991. does this

  1992. make the

  1993. grace of

  1994. baptism an

  1995. automatic

  1996. thing?

  1997. And I

  1998. want to

  1999. say to

  2000. you,

  2001. of course

  2002. not.

  2003. Listen

  2004. again to

  2005. our

  2006. confession.

  2007. Baptism is

  2008. a sacrament

  2009. of the

  2010. New

  2011. Testament.

  2012. Paragraph

  2013. 6,

  2014. chapter

  2015. 28.

  2016. The

  2017. efficacy,

  2018. the

  2019. efficiency

  2020. of

  2021. baptism

  2022. is not

  2023. tied to

  2024. that

  2025. moment

  2026. in

  2027. time

  2028. where

  2029. it's

  2030. administered.

  2031. Yet

  2032. not

  2033. withstanding

  2034. by the

  2035. right use

  2036. of this

  2037. ordinance,

  2038. that grace

  2039. promise is

  2040. not only

  2041. offered,

  2042. but rarely

  2043. exhibited and

  2044. conferred by

  2045. the Holy

  2046. Spirit to

  2047. such whether

  2048. of age

  2049. when they're

  2050. adults or

  2051. infants,

  2052. as that

  2053. grace

  2054. belongs

  2055. according to

  2056. the counsel

  2057. of God's

  2058. own will

  2059. in his

  2060. appointed

  2061. time.

  2062. What that's

  2063. saying is

  2064. that baptism

  2065. doesn't save

  2066. you.

  2067. And we

  2068. know all

  2069. too well

  2070. don't we

  2071. that tragically

  2072. there will

  2073. be some

  2074. covenant

  2075. children that

  2076. go away

  2077. and they

  2078. will become

  2079. covenant

  2080. breakers.

  2081. And even

  2082. so God

  2083. is sovereign

  2084. in salvation

  2085. and we

  2086. anticipate

  2087. by faith

  2088. in him

  2089. and in

  2090. his promise

  2091. and the

  2092. diligent

  2093. use of

  2094. the means

  2095. of the

  2096. reality

  2097. which

  2098. baptism

  2099. symbolizes

  2100. that it

  2101. will be

  2102. effective to

  2103. that child

  2104. in God's

  2105. good time.

  2106. Jesus

  2107. lays his

  2108. hands

  2109. on them.

  2110. And that's

  2111. the hope

  2112. of every

  2113. Christian

  2114. parent.

  2115. As they

  2116. hold of

  2117. God's

  2118. covenant

  2119. blessing

  2120. in bringing

  2121. little

  2122. children.

  2123. Forbidding

  2124. little

  2125. children and

  2126. blessing

  2127. little

  2128. children.

  2129. As I

  2130. close let

  2131. me just

  2132. give a

  2133. brief word.

  2134. How does

  2135. Jesus

  2136. obtain the

  2137. blessing

  2138. for little

  2139. children?

  2140. There's a

  2141. little detail

  2142. isn't there

  2143. that the

  2144. passage closes

  2145. with.

  2146. He laid

  2147. his hands

  2148. on them.

  2149. Verse 15

  2150. He went

  2151. away.

  2152. He departed

  2153. from there.

  2154. It's a

  2155. really

  2156. interesting

  2157. verb

  2158. that

  2159. Matthew

  2160. is using.

  2161. It conveys

  2162. proceeding.

  2163. He's going

  2164. back on

  2165. his journey.

  2166. Jesus

  2167. has paused

  2168. at the start

  2169. of Matthew

  2170. 19 and

  2171. he's blessed

  2172. the children

  2173. for now

  2174. he's on

  2175. his way

  2176. back to

  2177. Jerusalem.

  2178. And why

  2179. Jerusalem?

  2180. He's told

  2181. his disciples

  2182. twice to me

  2183. he'll go

  2184. and he'll

  2185. suffer many

  2186. things from

  2187. the elders

  2188. and the

  2189. chief priests

  2190. and the

  2191. scribes

  2192. and he'll

  2193. be killed

  2194. and raised

  2195. on the

  2196. third day.

  2197. He laid

  2198. his hands

  2199. on them

  2200. and he

  2201. departed

  2202. from there

  2203. to the

  2204. cross.

  2205. The cross.

  2206. And as he

  2207. did throughout

  2208. the Old

  2209. Testament he

  2210. blesses these

  2211. little ones

  2212. prospectively

  2213. and now he

  2214. must depart

  2215. from there

  2216. to fetch

  2217. the blessing

  2218. that he has

  2219. imparted

  2220. for them

  2221. upon them.

  2222. And since

  2223. Jesus has

  2224. died to

  2225. obtain a

  2226. blessing for

  2227. such as

  2228. these let

  2229. us bring

  2230. our little

  2231. children to

  2232. Jesus.

  2233. Let nothing

  2234. and no one

  2235. forbid them.

  2236. And if we

  2237. have no

  2238. children of

  2239. our own we

  2240. all know

  2241. children.

  2242. And let us

  2243. bring them to

  2244. Jesus and

  2245. pray for them

  2246. because we

  2247. have every

  2248. reason to

  2249. expect a

  2250. blessing

  2251. because Jesus

  2252. loves our

  2253. little

  2254. children.

  2255. Let's

  2256. pray.

  2257. Let's

  2258. pray.

  2259. Let's

  2260. pray.

  2261. Let's

  2262. pray.

  2263. Let's

  2264. pray.

  2265. Let's

  2266. pray.

  2267. Let's

  2268. pray.

  2269. Let's

  2270. pray.

  2271. Let's

  2272. pray.

  2273. Let's

  2274. Thank you.
