  1. And turn if you go to Matthew 20. Matthew chapter 20, that's page 825 in the Church Bible. Matthew chapter 20.

Matthew 20 chapter mention Matthew 20 chapter mention

  2. ! I'm going to look at verses 17 to 34.

  3. When it comes to greatness,

  4. there's one man that comes into my mind, and I expect it comes into many of your minds.

  5. He's the three-time heavyweight boxing champion, Cassius Clay, or we might know him as Muhammad Ali.

  6. Do you remember him? He had five career losses, 56 wins, 37 of those were knockouts.

  7. The sports illustrators, BBC, Laureus, they needed to be named the greatest sportsman of the 20th century.

  8. What was his catchphrase?

  9. I am the greatest, wasn't it?

  10. I am the greatest, that's exactly right.

  11. He would speak about how great he was.

  12. He would build himself up.

  13. So listen to some of his quotes.

  14. It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am.

  15. I'm not the greatest, I'm the double greatest.

  16. Not only do I knock them out, but I kick them around.

  17. His autobiography was imaginatively called the greatest in his own words.

  18. Cassius Clay was a man on a mission.

  19. A mission to be the greatest boxer in this world has ever seen.

  20. And in Matthew 20 we come across another man on a mission.

  21. Another candidate for greatness.

  22. Like Cassius Clay, he was great.

  23. Like Cassius Clay, he had profound things to say that people around him didn't like.

  24. But his mission could not have been more different.

  25. His closest followers identify him, this man, as the promised ruler of the world.

  26. And they say, Jesus, you are the holder of the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

  27. You let me live.

  28. You're the one who can give entry.

  29. You are the very son of God.

  30. And that is who his followers think he is.

  31. But this is how Jesus outlines his mission.

  32. His mission.

  33. And look at verse 18, you see.

  34. Jesus says in Matthew 20, 18.

  35. We are going up to Jerusalem.

  36. And the Son of Man, that's his way of describing himself, will be delivered over the chief priests and scribes.

  37. And they will condemn him to death.

  38. They'll deliver him over the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.

  39. And he will be raised on the third day.

  40. To see greatness for Jesus looks very, very different, doesn't it?

  41. And the Jews, his own people, they are about to condemn him to death.

  42. Not because he did anything wrong, but because he offended them.

  43. Because he caused them problems.

  44. They're not very followers, are they?

  45. And in order to keep the peace of the Romans through the ignition of the time,

  46. they mock him, they flog him, and they will publicly execute him.

  47. They'll nail his hands and his feet to a plank of wood.

  48. They'll hoist his naked body into the air for all to see a criminal's death.

  49. And so Muhammad Ali, he punches the air.

  50. He stands on his arms aloft.

  51. And Muhammad Ali says, I am the greatest.

  52. But the Lord Jesus allowed his arms to be nailed to the cross for us.

  53. And so let me ask you, what's your idea of greatness?

  54. What is your idea this morning of greatness?

  55. Jesus has barely finished explaining how he's going to pour out his life,

  56. how he'll be crucified,

  57. when the mother of James and John, two of his closest followers,

  58. comes up to Jesus.

  59. She's got a sore sore on her knees.

  60. She's looking for a fever.

  61. She's dragged her two sons,

  62. slightly embarrassed, I think, with her.

  63. And if you thought pushing pear in the sleep room was the thing of today,

  64. don't be mistaken.

  65. So here is James and John's mum coming up,

  66. saying, I want something for my sons.

  67. Jesus says to her, what is it that you want?

  68. And she says literally this, promise me.

  69. Promise, she says.

  70. You know, it's like when somebody asks you to promise something

  71. before they tell you what it is.

  72. That's so that you'll say yes on the spot.

  73. Promise me this.

  74. Say that.

  75. Verse 21.

  76. One of my sons, these two sons of mine,

  77. one of them is able to sit at your right hand,

  78. and the other on your left at the kingdom.

  79. Do you remember what Jesus said he's going to do?

  80. Remember what he said he's going to do when he gets to Jerusalem?

  81. He said, I will pour out my life.

  82. I will be crucified.

  83. But all the disciples could think of as their position in the coming kingdom.

  84. Now it's true, in the previous chapter we looked at a few weeks ago,

  85. that Jesus had told the twelve disciples they would have a special place.

  86. Chapter 19, verse 28.

  87. Truly I say to you, in the new world,

  88. when the son of man will sit on his glorious throne,

  89. you who followed me will also sit on twelve thrones,

  90. judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

  91. And everyone who's left,

  92. or brothers, or sisters, or father,

  93. or mother, or children, or lands, for my name's sake,

  94. they'll receive a hundredfold,

  95. and they'll inherit a certain life.

  96. And the many who are first will be last,

  97. and the last first.

  98. You see, that's all they heard.

  99. The one of the disciples heard,

  100. there's something in it for them.

  101. They are like moths,

  102. spellbound by a great light,

  103. flapping around,

  104. they're not able to see anything else.

  105. They're totally oblivious to what Jesus says about death.

  106. All they can see is,

  107. I'm going to get some glory,

  108. and it will be awesome.

  109. And Jesus is saying,

  110. the first shall be last,

  111. and the last shall be first.

  112. And he is living it out, isn't he?

  113. That Jesus is about to pour out his life.

  114. He's about to become the last.

  115. So that others can become the first.

  116. But all the apostles are doing,

  117. is they are worrying that they get the first place.

  118. They've completely misunderstood the mission of Jesus.

  119. You don't know what you're asking Jesus as to the Lord.

  120. Are you able to drink the cup that I will drink?

  121. So the disciples, they think, don't they,

  122. that glory and greatness

  123. come from political positions.

  124. From kind of worldly power,

  125. and conquest,

  126. and lofty schemes.

  127. That's what's in their minds.

  128. Ruling and reigning.

  129. That's what is in their minds about what Jesus is going to do,

  130. despite what he said.

  131. But the cup that Jesus is speaking of in this passage,

  132. it's not the kind of,

  133. the royal silverware.

  134. It's not the royal doulton that you have in a special box.

  135. It's not high tea condiments

  136. that you need.

  137. When Jesus speaks about a cup here,

  138. he's using a figure of speech,

  139. an Old Testament picture.

  140. A picture of God

  141. pouring out his judgment on the world

  142. because they are in rebellion against him.

  143. And it's a serious issue.

  144. And Jesus says,

  145. I'm about to drink that cup.

  146. I'm about to drink the cup of God's anger

  147. against what you and I have done.

  148. Against how you and I have rebelled against him

  149. and lived without a thought frame.

  150. And that drink is about to be poured out

  151. into Jesus' mouth.

  152. James and John,

  153. do you really think you're able to drink the cup

  154. from which I'm about to drink?

  155. And ironically,

  156. the brothers say,

  157. well, we are.

  158. We are able.

  159. And they don't know what they're asking.

  160. They've got no idea.

  161. But Jesus knows, doesn't he?

  162. He knows the massiveness

  163. of what is about to go on

  164. in the next few years.

  165. He knows that James will be

  166. the first apostle to die.

  167. He knows that King Herod

  168. will cut his throat

  169. of the sword

  170. for being a follower of Jesus.

  171. He knows that John

  172. will live a long life,

  173. a long life of persecution

  174. and suffering,

  175. exiled to an island called Patmos.

  176. Where he has a life

  177. which is suffering for the gospel.

  178. And so Jesus is like,

  179. doesn't he?

  180. Verse 23,

  181. if you look at this.

  182. He says,

  183. you will indeed.

  184. You will drink my cup.

  185. But to sit at my right hand

  186. and my left is not for mine to grant,

  187. but it is for those

  188. for whom it is to be prepared

  189. by the Father.

  190. Now,

  191. I want you to notice something here.

  192. Do notice,

  193. Jesus doesn't compliment

  194. our mission.

  195. He doesn't say anything

  196. about their desire for greatness.

  197. Instead,

  198. what he does here

  199. is,

  200. he says,

  201. if you want to share

  202. in his glory,

  203. then you have to share

  204. in his suffering.

  205. Let me say that again.

  206. If you want to share

  207. in Jesus' glory,

  208. then you need to share

  209. in his suffering.

  210. Who sits at the right hand

  211. and the left hand

  212. for Jesus

  213. is irrelevant.

  214. He's not coming to sell

  215. box seats in his kingdom.

  216. He's coming to make his kingdom.

  217. And he does that

  218. by drinking the cup

  219. of God's anger,

  220. of God's judgment,

  221. so that you and I

  222. don't need Jesus.

  223. By exhausting

  224. the penalty

  225. that we deserve

  226. by dying on the cross

  227. in our place.

  228. And in this long,

  229. before the other ten

  230. disciples get wind

  231. of what James and John

  232. and their man had asked,

  233. they hear that

  234. James and John

  235. are asking

  236. for the plush seats

  237. in the kingdom.

  238. So Matthew tells us

  239. in verse 24,

  240. when the ten

  241. heard about it,

  242. they were indignant

  243. at the two brothers.

  244. They were furious.

  245. And you think

  246. that they would be angry

  247. at James and John.

  248. You've just not

  249. got it, boys.

  250. You've just not

  251. understood it.

  252. What the kingdom is like.

  253. But it's nothing

  254. like that at all.

  255. They are furious

  256. that they didn't get it first.

  257. They figure that

  258. they've missed out

  259. on the best tickets.

  260. That James and John

  261. have jumped the gun

  262. and now they're going

  263. to have to settle

  264. third and fourth

  265. and fifth place.

  266. And so Jesus

  267. calls them over

  268. and he sets the record straight.

  269. And he explains

  270. how this world works.

  271. And he says

  272. in this world

  273. rulers dominate.

  274. Men of high position

  275. they exercise power.

  276. That is how the world

  277. works, isn't it?

  278. Greatness in this world

  279. is about status.

  280. It's about having people

  281. under you.

  282. It's about calling

  283. the shots

  284. and being able

  285. to do whatever

  286. you want.

  287. It's about being

  288. better than anybody else.

  289. whether that's

  290. in your business.

  291. Whether that's

  292. better than your neighbours.

  293. Whether that's

  294. better than your friends.

  295. That's what greatness is.

  296. But Jesus says

  297. not so

  298. with you.

  299. Verse 26

  300. it shall not be so

  301. among you.

  302. It shall not be so

  303. among you.

  304. I want us to be

  305. really careful here.

  306. I think we need

  307. to be careful

  308. because Jesus

  309. is not saying

  310. that greatness

  311. is wrong.

  312. Greatness

  313. is not wrong.

  314. We were made

  315. to be great.

  316. The Bible says

  317. that every human being

  318. was made in the image

  319. of God.

  320. The Bible says

  321. that every human being

  322. has been crowned

  323. with glory and honour.

  324. And we are

  325. the greatest

  326. of God's creation.

  327. for the New Testament

  328. tells us

  329. for those of us

  330. who follow Jesus

  331. that we now

  332. are seated

  333. in the heavenly realms

  334. with Jesus Christ.

  335. We have an inheritance

  336. that never perishes

  337. or spoils or fakes

  338. and is kept in heaven

  339. for us.

  340. The Bible says

  341. to the New Testament

  342. Christians

  343. it says

  344. we will rule the world

  345. with Christ.

  346. We will judge the world.

  347. We will share

  348. in the inheritance

  349. of God's own son.

  350. We will be called

  351. children of the

  352. creator of the universe.

  353. He will call us

  354. as sons

  355. and daughters.

  356. And so

  357. human beings

  358. striving for greatness

  359. that there is

  360. inside of every human being

  361. and you look at our culture

  362. and it's there

  363. isn't it?

  364. That is not wrong.

  365. There's nothing wrong

  366. with greatness.

  367. You strive for it.

  368. You don't have to be

  369. embarrassed about it.

  370. Because greatness

  371. is not the problem.

  372. The problem is

  373. how we get there.

  374. that's the issue.

  375. I've only already

  376. wanted to follow

  377. this sermon.

  378. And this is the point.

  379. It's true greatness

  380. comes from service.

  381. True greatness

  382. comes from service.

  383. That's what Jesus

  384. showed us.

  385. Look at verse 26.

  386. Whoever would be

  387. great among you

  388. must be your servant.

  389. must be

  390. a slave.

  391. And whoever would be

  392. first in man

  393. you must be your slave

  394. even as the son of man

  395. again that's referring to

  396. Jesus

  397. came not to be served

  398. but to serve

  399. and to give his life

  400. as a ransom for money.

  401. And Jesus takes this

  402. worldview of greatness

  403. and he just turns it

  404. on his head.

  405. He shows us that

  406. the way that we

  407. picture greatness

  408. is just the wrong

  409. way round.

  410. So greatness in the world

  411. works like this

  412. doesn't it?

  413. We strive for

  414. greatness.

  415. It goes like that.

  416. But he says

  417. greatness in my kingdom

  418. goes the exact

  419. opposite way.

  420. It goes down.

  421. The greatest

  422. will be the slave.

  423. Greatness is about

  424. being a servant.

  425. It's about being

  426. a slave to others.

  427. Now let's think

  428. about that for a moment.

  429. Let's think

  430. how do men work?

  431. How do guys work?

  432. Well the way we

  433. take a lot

  434. comes down to

  435. power and status.

  436. Doesn't it?

  437. So the first question

  438. when I walk into

  439. a room full of guys

  440. the first question

  441. I ask when I meet

  442. someone I haven't

  443. seen in a while

  444. is

  445. what do you do

  446. with yourself

  447. these days?

  448. What are you up to

  449. now?

  450. I want to know

  451. how I fit

  452. how I compare

  453. to them.

  454. I want to know

  455. if their job

  456. is better than

  457. my job.

  458. I want to know

  459. if they earn

  460. more money

  461. than I do.

  462. I want to know

  463. who's the greatest.

  464. I think we

  465. would struggle

  466. with this

  467. in a similar

  468. but different

  469. way.

  470. How many times

  471. do you think

  472. to yourself

  473. do I look

  474. as fat as her?

  475. Do I look

  476. as skinny as her?

  477. Am I that short?

  478. Or what about

  479. if you've got kids?

  480. At least our

  481. kids don't behave

  482. as badly as

  483. so and so's kids.

  484. There's so many

  485. ways we do it

  486. aren't there?

  487. So many ways

  488. that actually

  489. we don't like

  490. to repent.

  491. We compare

  492. we build

  493. ourselves up

  494. and we say

  495. we aren't

  496. great.

  497. You want to be

  498. great says

  499. Jesus?

  500. Be a slave.

  501. Be a slave.

  502. Such sharp

  503. language.

  504. It's so you

  505. can get through

  506. the disciples

  507. thick skulls

  508. and you can

  509. get it through

  510. my thick skull.

  511. And there's

  512. no romance

  513. is there?

  514. There's no

  515. prestige.

  516. There's no

  517. power in

  518. being a slave.

  519. You've not

  520. got control

  521. of it.

  522. You are

  523. serving.

  524. You are

  525. pouring yourself

  526. out to love

  527. others.

  528. You're doing

  529. things that

  530. don't benefit

  531. you but

  532. benefit others.

  533. You're doing

  534. it just like

  535. Jesus did.

  536. Jesus didn't

  537. do it to

  538. build himself

  539. up.

  540. But to

  541. pour himself

  542. out to

  543. those he

  544. loved.

  545. Not so he

  546. felt comfortable.

  547. Not so that

  548. he felt he

  549. got his

  550. desires but

  551. so that he

  552. could sue

  553. others.

  554. That is

  555. too

  556. greatness but

  557. it's not

  558. easy is it?

  559. It's not

  560. easy being

  561. a slave.

  562. And as I

  563. try to

  564. think through

  565. what is

  566. it that

  567. makes it

  568. so hard

  569. I think

  570. it comes

  571. down to

  572. this.

  573. It comes

  574. down to

  575. the one

  576. sin.

  577. The base

  578. sin.

  579. And it's

  580. a sin of

  581. pride.

  582. That I

  583. want others

  584. to see me

  585. as great

  586. for who I

  587. am.

  588. So I

  589. don't want

  590. to serve

  591. others.

  592. one of

  593. the

  594. reformers

  595. said

  596. really

  597. helpful.

  598. That pride

  599. was the

  600. undergarment

  601. of sin.

  602. It's the

  603. first thing

  604. we put on

  605. as Christians

  606. and it's

  607. the last

  608. thing we

  609. take off.

  610. It's like

  611. a vest in

  612. winter.

  613. It's the

  614. first thing

  615. you put on

  616. in the

  617. morning and

  618. the last

  619. thing you

  620. take off

  621. at night.

  622. It sits

  623. there

  624. festering

  625. away.

  626. Amongst

  627. everything

  628. we do

  629. and it's

  630. a hard

  631. one to

  632. kick

  633. isn't it?

  634. And so

  635. we need

  636. to watch

  637. our pride.

  638. We need

  639. to admit

  640. it.

  641. But I

  642. have to

  643. say that

  644. as I

  645. thought more

  646. about this

  647. this church

  648. is full

  649. of greatness.

  650. Look

  651. around you.

  652. You've

  653. got people

  654. who selflessly

  655. hear

  656. coming early

  657. who run

  658. rotas

  659. who

  660. give up

  661. their

  662. time on

  663. Thursdays

  664. so

  665. children

  666. can learn

  667. about

  668. the

  669. Lord

  670. Jesus.

  671. People

  672. sitting

  673. next to

  674. you

  675. who

  676. spend

  677. their

  678. time

  679. preparing

  680. lessons

  681. to teach

  682. English

  683. as a

  684. second

  685. language

  686. and get

  687. the Bible

  688. open.

  689. People

  690. who open

  691. up their

  692. homes to

  693. visitors

  694. and strangers

  695. even when

  696. they're

  697. tired

  698. and

  699. exhausted.

  700. people

  701. who come

  702. to a

  703. parent

  704. toddler

  705. group

  706. on a

  707. Monday

  708. morning

  709. when it's

  710. the last

  711. thing they

  712. want to.

  713. People

  714. committed

  715. to serving

  716. the church

  717. week in

  718. week out

  719. year in

  720. year out

  721. decade in

  722. decade out.

  723. Families

  724. that cut

  725. back so

  726. that they

  727. could give

  728. sacrificially

  729. to the

  730. church.

  731. Families

  732. that stay

  733. in a

  734. smaller

  735. house

  736. in the

  737. Ealing

  738. area

  739. instead of

  740. being able

  741. to move

  742. to the

  743. leafy

  744. countryside

  745. and have

  746. a great

  747. larger

  748. house

  749. and a

  750. better

  751. stop

  752. to

  753. live in.

  754. Folk

  755. who

  756. put their

  757. hand up

  758. again and

  759. again.

  760. Friends

  761. who look

  762. out for

  763. one another

  764. and call

  765. one another

  766. up and

  767. text one

  768. another

  769. when the

  770. chips

  771. are down.

  772. Who

  773. go out

  774. and enjoy

  775. one another's

  776. company.

  777. Not because

  778. it's good

  779. for them

  780. but because

  781. they want

  782. to serve

  783. each other.

  784. And so

  785. when I look

  786. around and

  787. as I think

  788. of the

  789. church this

  790. morning I

  791. see a

  792. church full

  793. of greatness.

  794. A church

  795. where people

  796. do serve

  797. one another

  798. actually in

  799. a great

  800. way.

  801. The other

  802. are still

  803. things out

  804. that get

  805. in the

  806. way of

  807. our

  808. greatness.

  809. There are

  810. still little

  811. things that

  812. hold us

  813. back from

  814. serving.

  815. as a

  816. minister of

  817. this

  818. church

  819. that very

  820. title is

  821. supposed to

  822. mean servant.

  823. And yet we

  824. all know

  825. can't we

  826. that that

  827. can be a

  828. way of

  829. holding power

  830. and authority

  831. in a way

  832. that's very

  833. very unhelpful.

  834. I'm not

  835. saying that

  836. authority is

  837. bad but I

  838. am saying

  839. that you

  840. can use

  841. your title

  842. to get

  843. your

  844. greatness.

  845. And

  846. whatever

  847. title we

  848. have we

  849. must find

  850. our

  851. greatness

  852. not in

  853. that.

  854. But our

  855. greatness

  856. should be

  857. derived from

  858. our serving

  859. others.

  860. That's what

  861. it means

  862. to be a

  863. leader.

  864. And then

  865. as servant

  866. hearted

  867. people we

  868. find ourselves

  869. often

  870. serving only

  871. those who

  872. are attractive.

  873. I don't

  874. mean that

  875. in a physical

  876. sense though

  877. that is

  878. possible

  879. isn't it?

  880. But we

  881. can find it

  882. easy to

  883. serve some

  884. people.

  885. It struck

  886. me that

  887. Jesus didn't

  888. say serve

  889. the people

  890. that you

  891. like being

  892. around.

  893. And he

  894. didn't say

  895. serve the

  896. ones that

  897. you're

  898. well with.

  899. And he

  900. didn't say

  901. serve the

  902. people just

  903. like you

  904. or people

  905. that have

  906. the same

  907. background

  908. as you

  909. or serve

  910. the people

  911. that wear

  912. the same

  913. kind of

  914. clothes

  915. as you

  916. or serve

  917. the people

  918. of the same

  919. kind of

  920. parenting

  921. style as

  922. you

  923. or the

  924. ones who

  925. have a

  926. good sense

  927. of humour

  928. and you

  929. get on

  930. well with.

  931. So let's

  932. call it

  933. speed to

  934. speed.

  935. Do you

  936. know why

  937. it's hard

  938. to serve

  939. other people

  940. who are

  941. not like

  942. us?

  943. Because deep

  944. down we

  945. think we're

  946. better than

  947. them.

  948. We

  949. actually think

  950. more important

  951. or significant

  952. that it

  953. doesn't

  954. actually

  955. matter if

  956. I don't

  957. look after

  958. or serve

  959. this person

  960. or that

  961. person.

  962. Sometimes

  963. the wrong

  964. isn't just

  965. us despising

  966. others and

  967. thinking we're

  968. better than

  969. others but it's

  970. exactly the

  971. opposite.

  972. We look around

  973. and we see the

  974. gifts of other

  975. people.

  976. We see their

  977. intelligence,

  978. their way with

  979. people, how good

  980. they are with

  981. people and we

  982. draw comparisons

  983. and we feel

  984. so inferior.

  985. And then we

  986. just back out

  987. of services

  988. altogether.

  989. We back out

  990. of relationships

  991. because I'm

  992. not as good

  993. as that.

  994. I couldn't

  995. possibly do

  996. that.

  997. Do you want

  998. to break free

  999. from those

  1000. ways this

  1001. morning?

  1002. Then take

  1003. a risk.

  1004. Serve

  1005. someone.

  1006. Don't worry

  1007. about what

  1008. they're going

  1009. to think,

  1010. what they're

  1011. going to say

  1012. about you

  1013. or what

  1014. they think

  1015. you think

  1016. about them.

  1017. just serve

  1018. them.

  1019. Look at the

  1020. example of

  1021. our Saviour

  1022. we follow in

  1023. his footsteps.

  1024. You see the

  1025. last weapon

  1026. against the

  1027. problem of

  1028. pride that

  1029. we see in

  1030. this passage

  1031. I think is

  1032. the Lord

  1033. Jesus.

  1034. He is the

  1035. greatest one

  1036. of all.

  1037. He is the

  1038. one who

  1039. spoke and

  1040. things came

  1041. into being.

  1042. He's the

  1043. one who

  1044. sustains

  1045. all things.

  1046. So our

  1047. comes and

  1048. thanks for

  1049. Muhammad Ali

  1050. is great.

  1051. But we

  1052. remember

  1053. Muhammad Ali

  1054. at the end

  1055. of his

  1056. life.

  1057. Those last

  1058. 10-15

  1059. years shaking

  1060. the

  1061. targets.

  1062. So fragile

  1063. trying to

  1064. light the

  1065. flame

  1066. at the

  1067. Olympics.

  1068. I can

  1069. push him

  1070. over.

  1071. And in

  1072. Jesus he's

  1073. risen to

  1074. the right

  1075. hand of

  1076. God and

  1077. is ruling

  1078. over the

  1079. world.

  1080. That's what

  1081. we're going

  1082. to look at

  1083. gloriously

  1084. tonight and

  1085. next Sunday

  1086. night.

  1087. Jesus is

  1088. a man on

  1089. a mission

  1090. and his

  1091. mission is

  1092. not to

  1093. lord it

  1094. over his

  1095. people.

  1096. Jesus'

  1097. mission is

  1098. not to

  1099. pulverize

  1100. his enemies.

  1101. It's not

  1102. to be

  1103. served like

  1104. some royal

  1105. prince,

  1106. although that's

  1107. what he

  1108. is.

  1109. Rather,

  1110. Jesus'

  1111. mission is

  1112. to be

  1113. served up

  1114. like a

  1115. lamb.

  1116. To be

  1117. served up

  1118. like a

  1119. lamb to

  1120. slaughter.

  1121. And he

  1122. takes the

  1123. penalty that

  1124. you and I

  1125. deserve and

  1126. Jesus drinks

  1127. that cup of

  1128. punishment.

  1129. And he

  1130. says to you

  1131. this morning,

  1132. let me

  1133. serve you.

  1134. Let me

  1135. save you.

  1136. And that

  1137. is the

  1138. right response,

  1139. isn't it?

  1140. So let

  1141. this great

  1142. one serve

  1143. us.

  1144. To save

  1145. us, to

  1146. trust in

  1147. what he's

  1148. done.

  1149. And then,

  1150. and only

  1151. then, we

  1152. can live

  1153. lives serving

  1154. one another

  1155. because our

  1156. hope, and

  1157. our status,

  1158. and our

  1159. identity, is

  1160. secure in

  1161. him.

  1162. Look at

  1163. verse 29

  1164. with me.

  1165. As they

  1166. went out of

  1167. Jericho, a

  1168. great crowd

  1169. followed him.

  1170. And behold,

  1171. there were two

  1172. blind men

  1173. sitting by the

  1174. roadside, and

  1175. when they

  1176. heard that

  1177. Jesus was

  1178. passing by,

  1179. they cried

  1180. out,

  1181. Lord,

  1182. Lord,

  1183. have mercy

  1184. on us.

  1185. Son of

  1186. David.

  1187. The crowd

  1188. grew a big

  1189. window.

  1190. Shut up.

  1191. Be quiet.

  1192. But they

  1193. cried all

  1194. the more,

  1195. Lord, have

  1196. mercy on

  1197. us, son of

  1198. David.

  1199. And stopping,

  1200. stopping,

  1201. Jesus called

  1202. them and

  1203. said, what

  1204. do you

  1205. want me to

  1206. do for

  1207. you?

  1208. Same

  1209. question that

  1210. he asked

  1211. James and

  1212. John's

  1213. honor.

  1214. And they

  1215. said to

  1216. Lord, let

  1217. our eyes

  1218. be opened.

  1219. Jesus

  1220. in pity

  1221. touched

  1222. their eyes,

  1223. and immediately

  1224. they recovered

  1225. their sight

  1226. and followed

  1227. him.

  1228. So what's

  1229. Matthew

  1230. trying to

  1231. do here?

  1232. Matthew

  1233. is trying to

  1234. show you

  1235. the contrast

  1236. between

  1237. James and

  1238. John and

  1239. the two

  1240. blind men.

  1241. Lord, have

  1242. mercy on

  1243. me, they

  1244. cry.

  1245. Those

  1246. are the

  1247. words of

  1248. the blind

  1249. men.

  1250. There's no

  1251. I am the

  1252. greatest

  1253. here.

  1254. These two

  1255. blind men

  1256. recognize Jesus

  1257. for whom he

  1258. is, that he

  1259. is the son of

  1260. David, the

  1261. promised

  1262. savior, and

  1263. they cry out

  1264. for mercy, and

  1265. they follow

  1266. him.

  1267. And the

  1268. disciples, they

  1269. are so

  1270. thick, so

  1271. stupid, so

  1272. blind, that

  1273. they are

  1274. striving for

  1275. greatness in

  1276. the worldly

  1277. way.

  1278. Not the

  1279. kingdom

  1280. way.

  1281. As I was

  1282. writing this

  1283. sermon, I

  1284. was thinking,

  1285. I want this

  1286. sermon to be

  1287. great.

  1288. And I

  1289. actually, I

  1290. want this

  1291. sermon to be

  1292. seen as

  1293. great.

  1294. I want it

  1295. to be a

  1296. great sermon.

  1297. You

  1298. hypocrite

  1299. leave me.

  1300. But I

  1301. like you

  1302. have to

  1303. run from

  1304. seeking my

  1305. glory, to

  1306. seeking the

  1307. glory of

  1308. my savior, and

  1309. the glory of

  1310. others.

  1311. By serving

  1312. others.

  1313. True

  1314. greatness

  1315. comes from

  1316. service.

  1317. True

  1318. greatness in a

  1319. sermon comes

  1320. from the

  1321. plain

  1322. explanation

  1323. of God's

  1324. word.

  1325. And seeing

  1326. that, all

  1327. of us, and

  1328. how we need

  1329. to change

  1330. because of

  1331. what God

  1332. says to

  1333. us all, it's

  1334. not about

  1335. the preacher.

  1336. It's about

  1337. putting our

  1338. lives at the

  1339. feet of our

  1340. great God.

  1341. As I want to

  1342. say to you

  1343. this morning,

  1344. if you've

  1345. not seen

  1346. Jesus, it's

  1347. really great

  1348. for so many

  1349. visitors here

  1350. this morning.

  1351. It feels like

  1352. Sarah's brought

  1353. half the

  1354. school over

  1355. there.

  1356. But if you

  1357. do not yet

  1358. follow him, I

  1359. want you to

  1360. look around.

  1361. I want you to

  1362. look around

  1363. this room and

  1364. see a

  1365. community of

  1366. people who

  1367. are so

  1368. convinced of

  1369. the greatness

  1370. of Jesus

  1371. and of his

  1372. death in our

  1373. place that we

  1374. take him at

  1375. his word and

  1376. we trust him.

  1377. And so, like

  1378. Jesus, there's

  1379. no need for

  1380. gruesome

  1381. dictatorships.

  1382. There's no

  1383. need for

  1384. one-upmanship

  1385. over one

  1386. another.

  1387. And I hope

  1388. that if you

  1389. come along to

  1390. this group,

  1391. what you'll

  1392. see is a

  1393. loving community

  1394. of Christians.

  1395. who find

  1396. their greatness

  1397. in what

  1398. Jesus has

  1399. done for

  1400. them.

  1401. And so the

  1402. Christian life

  1403. is you

  1404. follow the

  1405. example of

  1406. the Master

  1407. and you

  1408. serve.

  1409. And if

  1410. you're not a

  1411. follower of

  1412. the Lord

  1413. Jesus, and

  1414. if you've

  1415. come here

  1416. this morning

  1417. and you've

  1418. not really

  1419. seen him

  1420. as he is,

  1421. maybe you're

  1422. working out

  1423. this morning

  1424. that there's

  1425. something about

  1426. it.

  1427. And can I

  1428. urge you to

  1429. cry out for

  1430. mercy to

  1431. call out to

  1432. this, the

  1433. greatest man

  1434. that the

  1435. world has

  1436. ever seen,

  1437. who became

  1438. the slave

  1439. of God.

  1440. And to

  1441. ask him to

  1442. take the

  1443. penalty that

  1444. you deserve,

  1445. that he

  1446. takes the

  1447. cup that

  1448. you should

  1449. really drink,

  1450. the cup of

  1451. God's

  1452. anger, so

  1453. you can

  1454. drink today

  1455. at this

  1456. table from

  1457. the cup of

  1458. God's

  1459. blessing.

  1460. God's

  1461. trust him.

  1462. Let's

  1463. pray.
