  1. Okay, this section. I want us to look at it for two weeks, mainly because I think it's one of the most neglected areas of the truth of the gospel.

  2. If I'm going to explain the gospel, we might talk about the incarnation, although I suspect lots of us wouldn't.

  3. We'd simply talk about the life of Christ, the miracles of Christ. We would talk about the cross.

  4. I suspect we don't talk about the burial of Christ, I don't want to explain the gospel very much.

  5. We do talk about the resurrection.

  6. And maybe we talk about his coming again, although I think we're a little bit nervous about that.

  7. But I think it's very rare in our explanation of the gospel that we talk about the ascension.

  8. The truth of the Lord Jesus Christ ascending into heaven.

  9. And what I've learned as I've kind of studied this in the last few weeks is when we neglect the truth of Christ's ascension,

  10. we're neglecting something of enormous significance, I'd really help you and I.

  11. It's a distortion of the gospel which makes us play down the truth of the ascension.

  12. We would, of course wouldn't we, we would recognise it's completely wrong to divorce the birth and life of our Lord Jesus from his death.

  13. We wouldn't do that.

  14. Many people of Christ do that and they produce Jesus who's a good example to us of love and good works but nothing more.

  15. Neither would we be content with divorcing the death of Jesus from his resurrection.

  16. We can't do that because the resurrection is the seal, it's the validation, it's the receipt of the price being paid by Christ and his death and his sufficient death.

  17. But it's also a big mistake to divorce the birth, life and death and resurrection of Jesus from the ascension into glory.

  18. And it's an odd thing that many biblical Christians have done that.

  19. And by doing that we've lost the fullness of the Christian gospel.

  20. It's significant I think that when Jesus tells Mary in John 20 verse 17 that she is to go to his brothers,

    John 20:17

  21. he does not say, go and tell them that I am risen.

  22. He says, go and tell them that I ascend to my father and their father, to my God and their God.

  23. When the Apostle Paul in that wonderful chapter in Romans 8 is reassuring us of what the Lord Jesus has done,

  24. of what Christ has done for us, he includes in that sufficient work of Christ not only that he died,

  25. and more than that was raised to life, but also that he is now at the right hand of God and he intercedes for us.

  26. In other words, the Apostle binds together the death, the resurrection and the ascension of the Lord Jesus.

  27. There's going to be three things over the next two weeks.

  28. First of all, tonight I want us to look at the fact of the ascension,

  29. and then the meaning of the ascension,

  30. and then next week what I want to try and do is look at the implications of the ascension.

  31. I want to say that the implications of the ascension are infinitely greater than we normally realise,

  32. and in various ways where I think you have and I have great needs.

  33. So first of all, the fact of the ascension.

  34. And I need to point out to you that Luke is a careful historian, isn't he?

  35. He wrote the book of Acts, as well as the third gospel,

  36. and he presents the ascension of the Lord Jesus to us as an historical fact.

  37. The same way that he presents the birth of Jesus as an historical fact.

  38. The death of Jesus and the resurrection of Jesus.

  39. They were events which were witnessed and are historical,

  40. and he points out to us that there were those who before their very eyes,

  41. Jesus was taken up.

  42. He ascended.

  43. Many people have problems with the whole idea of Jesus being taken up from earth into heaven.

  44. Jesus defying the law of gravity, as sometimes can be suggested.

  45. I personally have got no problems with the God who created the law of gravity

  46. suspending it for this particular purpose.

  47. Nor do I have any problems with the God of the supernatural,

  48. who brought Jesus Christ from the dead to life.

  49. Bringing him into heaven in the way that Luke describes here in Acts

  50. is, again, evidence of the supernatural.

  51. We can't prove it, can we?

  52. I get very tired of talks on the resurrection,

  53. which are all about the evidence for the resurrection.

  54. How we have definitive proof of the resurrection.

  55. I would argue that we do,

  56. but we don't believe the resurrection on the basis of

  57. the kind of proofs, so to speak.

  58. Can you prove the incarnation?

  59. You can't, can you?

  60. We can't prove the ascension,

  61. and yet it is historical.

  62. I've got no problems with the God who created

  63. the law of gravity,

  64. suspending the law of gravity,

  65. as he does here.

  66. And we need to say, don't we,

  67. that the problem is people have a problem with the supernatural.

  68. And that problem pursues them

  69. to whatever area of the gospel they're dealing with,

  70. because the God who we deal with

  71. is the God of the supernatural.

  72. The ascension tells us that.

  73. Same Greek word for heaven.

  74. He was taken up into heaven.

  75. It's used in the Bible for three things.

  76. It's one of the most commonest words

  77. in the whole of the New Testament.

  78. It's the word for heaven,

  79. or the heavens,

  80. or the sky,

  81. or the air.

  82. It's always the same word that's used

  83. in the New Testament.

  84. And there doesn't seem to be an alternative.

  85. It's used, firstly, for the air above us.

  86. So Jesus is the singer on the mount.

  87. He says to you,

  88. he directs us,

  89. consider the birds of the air.

  90. That is, the birds who fly in the air above us.

  91. It's the word for air.

  92. It's exactly the same word

  93. as for the heavens,

  94. all for heaven.

  95. It's used, secondly,

  96. for the whole realm of space,

  97. of sun and moon and stars.

  98. And so in that sense,

  99. the heavens beyond us.

  100. That would include now thinking

  101. what we would call,

  102. wouldn't it,

  103. outer space,

  104. outer space,

  105. the whole galaxy.

  106. But the third way

  107. that the word is used

  108. is for that sphere

  109. where God reigns

  110. and God acts.

  111. Where God is.

  112. That is the sphere

  113. of his unlimited power

  114. and sovereignty.

  115. It's the very thing

  116. that Jesus teaches

  117. his disciples to pray.

  118. We pray this tonight, isn't it?

  119. Our Father in heaven.

  120. This is precisely the word,

  121. the adjective that's used.

  122. Our heavenly Father.

  123. So that God is not to be thought of

  124. as earthly and bound

  125. and therefore by earthly standards

  126. and earthly possibilities

  127. and earthly ideas.

  128. He is the one who is in heaven.

  129. And that does not refer primarily

  130. to a location somewhere

  131. in the universe,

  132. but to the character of God

  133. as the God whose kingdom

  134. is the kingdom of heaven.

  135. That simply means

  136. that he is the God

  137. of unlimited,

  138. unbounded resources,

  139. unlimited sovereignty

  140. and unlimited power.

  141. And that is the realm

  142. of God's authority

  143. and presence.

  144. Sometimes,

  145. the word is used

  146. in the New Testament

  147. actually is a kind of synonym

  148. for God himself.

  149. So do you remember

  150. in the parable

  151. of the prodigal son?

  152. The son is sitting

  153. in the far country

  154. and he's planning

  155. what he's going to say

  156. to his dad, isn't he?

  157. And he's practicing

  158. this speech

  159. as he goes back

  160. to his dad

  161. and when he arrives

  162. into his dad's presence

  163. he says,

  164. I have sinned against heaven.

  165. I don't know your sight.

  166. So he's using the word heaven

  167. as a synonym for God

  168. and it's an important thing

  169. for us to grasp.

  170. It's one of the ways

  171. in which the Bible

  172. uses this term

  173. and it's important

  174. for us to recognize

  175. that for mortal creatures

  176. up

  177. is definitively

  178. the direction

  179. in which we look

  180. for the glory

  181. in which God dwells.

  182. We're not primarily

  183. speaking about location

  184. or a certain

  185. part of the universe

  186. but we are speaking

  187. about a place

  188. heaven is a place

  189. that is far more real

  190. than this world.

  191. And the book of Revelation

  192. the last book of the Bible

  193. is full of the word

  194. isn't it?

  195. It helps us

  196. in the measure

  197. that we

  198. fragile

  199. mortal human beings

  200. are able to understand

  201. it.

  202. To grasp what

  203. heaven means

  204. to which Jesus

  205. now is God.

  206. So we're not

  207. locating God

  208. in the sky

  209. when we speak

  210. of heaven

  211. but we are

  212. affirming that

  213. heaven is

  214. more real

  215. a world

  216. than this one

  217. and that Jesus

  218. has gone to it.

  219. Now of course

  220. Jesus could have

  221. left this world

  222. invisibly.

  223. He could have

  224. left the world

  225. invisibly.

  226. He came

  227. invisibly.

  228. Why didn't he

  229. leave this world

  230. invisibly?

  231. Think about that.

  232. Why didn't

  233. Jesus

  234. just

  235. go like that

  236. in the middle

  237. of the night

  238. when no one

  239. saw?

  240. That's how he

  241. entered the room

  242. with the Virgin Mary.

  243. But there's

  244. obvious reasons

  245. now

  246. why he would

  247. go publicly

  248. and visibly

  249. before their

  250. very eyes.

  251. And Luke

  252. tells us

  253. in Acts

    Acts 1:9

  254. chapter 1

  255. verse 9.

  256. And when he

  257. said these

  258. things

  259. as they

  260. were looking

  261. on

  262. he was

  263. lifted up

  264. and a cloud

  265. took him

  266. out of their

  267. sight.

  268. And they

  269. were gazing

  270. into heaven

  271. as he went.

  272. The reason

  273. Jesus went

  274. visibly

  275. was because

  276. the disciples

  277. would otherwise

  278. have been waiting

  279. for the next

  280. resurrection

  281. appearance

  282. of Jesus.

  283. And so

  284. Jesus

  285. again and

  286. again

  287. those 40

  288. days after

  289. his resurrection

  290. he kind of

  291. appears

  292. and then

  293. disappears.

  294. But what

  295. is happening

  296. now is

  297. Jesus is

  298. showing them

  299. visibly

  300. these 40

  301. days have

  302. come to

  303. an end.

  304. And Jesus

  305. was no longer

  306. going to pursue

  307. his purposes

  308. through his

  309. flesh on

  310. this earth.

  311. He was

  312. going to

  313. pursue in

  314. heaven

  315. his mighty

  316. plan.

  317. the

  318. saviour

  319. and the

  320. friend of

  321. sinners

  322. goes into

  323. heaven.

  324. Their

  325. friend

  326. he ascends

  327. on a cloud

  328. and so

  329. they're not

  330. waiting for

  331. the next

  332. appearance of

  333. Jesus

  334. and they

  335. wonder

  336. where it

  337. will be

  338. and where

  339. it will

  340. be.

  341. Because one

  342. of the

  343. reasons he

  344. goes to

  345. heaven is

  346. that he

  347. is everywhere

  348. to be

  349. known by

  350. his

  351. disciples.

  352. So

  353. Jesus

  354. says to

  355. you and

  356. I just

  357. means he

  358. says to

  359. the

  360. disciples

  361. I will

  362. be with

  363. you

  364. always

  365. everywhere.

  366. And so

  367. how can

  368. he be

  369. with them

  370. always

  371. everywhere

  372. if his

  373. presence

  374. is like

  375. the

  376. resurrection

  377. appearances?

  378. Well it

  379. can't be.

  380. The answer

  381. is he

  382. can't.

  383. But Jesus

  384. is able to

  385. be present

  386. with every

  387. Christian

  388. through the

  389. Holy Spirit

  390. wherever in

  391. the world

  392. they are.

  393. and his

  394. words I

  395. will be

  396. with you

  397. always

  398. are

  399. fulfilled

  400. in the

  401. ascension.

  402. And that

  403. is why

  404. he is

  405. God.

  406. So you

  407. get these

  408. two

  409. statements

  410. in the

  411. Gospels

  412. and they

  413. appear to

  414. be in

  415. tension

  416. don't you?

  417. And Jesus

  418. says the

  419. poor you

  420. will always

  421. have with

  422. you

  423. but me

  424. you will

  425. not always

  426. have with

  427. you.

  428. That's what

  429. he says.

  430. why is

  431. that?

  432. He says

  433. you will

  434. not always

  435. have me

  436. with you

  437. because

  438. I'm

  439. going to

  440. ascend

  441. to

  442. heaven.

  443. And yet

  444. he says

  445. I will

  446. never

  447. leave you

  448. nor

  449. forsake

  450. you.

  451. How?

  452. For the

  453. very simple

  454. reason that

  455. he will be

  456. present with

  457. his people

  458. by the

  459. Holy Spirit.

  460. But the

  461. really important

  462. thing to

  463. grasp is

  464. that the

  465. bodily

  466. presence of

  467. Jesus

  468. that is

  469. the

  470. presence

  471. of Jesus

  472. in his

  473. body

  474. now

  475. glorified

  476. but still

  477. in human

  478. form

  479. is in

  480. heaven

  481. and not

  482. on earth.

  483. On

  484. earth

  485. he is

  486. present

  487. spiritually

  488. by the

  489. Holy Spirit

  490. but he is

  491. not present

  492. bodily.

  493. There's a

  494. worship song

  495. isn't there?

  496. Jesus

  497. standing in

  498. the midst

  499. of us.

  500. No he's

  501. not.

  502. And that

  503. takes us

  504. into the

  505. first thing

  506. that is

  507. important in

  508. connection with

  509. the ascension

  510. with the

  511. meaning of

  512. the

  513. ascension.

  514. Let me

  515. just point

  516. out to you

  517. the importance

  518. of the

  519. fact that it

  520. was Jesus

  521. in our

  522. flesh who

  523. ascended into

  524. heaven.

  525. So the

  526. Heidenberg

  527. Cascism,

  528. we'll talk a

  529. little bit more

  530. about this

  531. next week,

  532. from the

  533. 16th century

  534. speaks of

  535. the ascension

  536. in this

  537. way.

  538. It says,

  539. when the

  540. question is

  541. asked,

  542. what is the

  543. benefit of

  544. the ascension

  545. of Jesus

  546. Christ from

  547. earth to

  548. heaven?

  549. And the

  550. answer is,

  551. our flesh

  552. is in

  553. heaven.

  554. Let's see.

  555. Let me

  556. explain that

  557. to you.

  558. What I

  559. mean by it

  560. is this,

  561. that Jesus

  562. Christ,

  563. according to

  564. His flesh,

  565. when the

  566. Word,

  567. when God

  568. became flesh

  569. and dwelt

  570. amongst us,

  571. that He

  572. has now

  573. been taken

  574. up to

  575. heaven.

  576. His human

  577. nature has

  578. entered into

  579. glory.

  580. And it is

  581. the glorified

  582. flesh of

  583. Jesus,

  584. which is

  585. now right

  586. there in

  587. the presence

  588. of God

  589. and glory.

  590. And that

  591. means a

  592. whole range

  593. of things.

  594. It means

  595. that He

  596. has gone

  597. to prepare

  598. a place

  599. for us.

  600. So,

  601. there will be

  602. time to the

  603. Augustine

  604. court to be

  605. trotted out

  606. in a few

  607. weeks,

  608. isn't it?

  609. He,

  610. without ceasing

  611. to be what

  612. He eternally

  613. was,

  614. He became

  615. what He

  616. eternally

  617. was not

  618. in the

  619. incarnation.

  620. God

  621. became man.

  622. He came

  623. to share

  624. our nature.

  625. He entered

  626. into our

  627. life.

  628. And we

  629. have the

  630. guarantee,

  631. because He

  632. is there,

  633. that if we

  634. are in

  635. Christ,

  636. if we are

  637. united to

  638. Him,

  639. we shall

  640. be there

  641. too.

  642. And so

  643. Jesus

  644. says,

  645. I go

  646. away,

  647. and actually

  648. it's much

  649. better for

  650. you that I

  651. go away,

  652. because I

  653. go away to

  654. prepare a

  655. place for

  656. you in

  657. my Father's

  658. house,

  659. that is the

  660. home of

  661. glory.

  662. Because you

  663. see,

  664. the glorified

  665. body of

  666. Jesus,

  667. this evening,

  668. is in

  669. heaven.

  670. He wears

  671. our human

  672. nature in

  673. glory,

  674. and that

  675. makes an

  676. enormous

  677. difference to

  678. two things.

  679. difference.

  680. It makes

  681. an enormous

  682. difference to

  683. the way we

  684. think of

  685. the church

  686. as the

  687. body of

  688. Christ.

  689. And it

  690. makes an

  691. enormous

  692. difference

  693. when we

  694. do like

  695. we did

  696. this morning,

  697. when we

  698. say,

  699. this is my

  700. body broken

  701. for you at

  702. the communion

  703. table.

  704. And unless

  705. you understand

  706. the ascension,

  707. you'll go

  708. wrong in

  709. both these

  710. areas.

  711. the church

  712. of Jesus

  713. Christ,

  714. as a

  715. visible,

  716. organised

  717. community of

  718. different

  719. denominations,

  720. is not

  721. the body

  722. of Christ.

  723. The body

  724. of Christ

  725. is not the

  726. physical

  727. church.

  728. So you

  729. don't join

  730. the body

  731. of Christ

  732. or become

  733. a member

  734. of it by

  735. adding your

  736. name to

  737. the members

  738. list.

  739. You become

  740. a member

  741. of the body

  742. of Christ

  743. by saving

  744. faith in

  745. the Lord

  746. Jesus,

  747. whom you

  748. are united

  749. to spiritually,

  750. not physically,

  751. but spiritually.

  752. And the

  753. body of

  754. Jesus Christ

  755. is therefore

  756. the company

  757. of people,

  758. the spiritual

  759. body,

  760. who are both

  761. on earth

  762. and in

  763. heaven.

  764. And that's

  765. a very important

  766. thing.

  767. We will not

  768. make the

  769. visible church

  770. of Jesus

  771. Christ into

  772. the body

  773. of Christ

  774. if we

  775. understand the

  776. resurrection

  777. and ascension

  778. of Jesus.

  779. The second

  780. thing is it

  781. must make a

  782. lot of

  783. different

  784. for

  785. the

  786. Lord's

  787. Supper.

  788. So when

  789. people think

  790. that they

  791. break the

  792. bread and

  793. say this

  794. is the

  795. body of

  796. Christ

  797. broken for

  798. you,

  799. that they

  800. are actually

  801. physically

  802. feeding on

  803. the body

  804. and blood

  805. of Jesus

  806. Christ.

  807. They are

  808. ignoring the

  809. truth of

  810. the

  811. ascension.

  812. Because the

  813. ascension tells

  814. you that

  815. his flesh

  816. is in

  817. heaven and

  818. not you.

  819. It is in

  820. heaven.

  821. And our

  822. communion with

  823. him as our

  824. saviour by the

  825. breaking of his

  826. body and the

  827. shadow of his

  828. blood is by

  829. spiritual union

  830. with him.

  831. By faith,

  832. not by

  833. physical union.

  834. That's very

  835. important for us

  836. to grasp.

  837. Calvin insists

  838. of this body

  839. imagery in the

  840. church and the

  841. body imagery in

  842. the Lord's

  843. Supper.

  844. They point to a

  845. spiritual reality,

  846. not a physical

  847. one.

  848. But the

  849. general meaning

  850. of the

  851. ascension is

  852. captured in

  853. what the

  854. creed says.

  855. Remember that

  856. earlier on in

  857. the service?

  858. What did

  859. it say?

  860. It said he

  861. was crucified,

  862. died and

  863. was buried,

  864. he descended

  865. to the day,

  866. on the third

  867. day he rose

  868. again, he

  869. ascended into

  870. heaven.

  871. The creed

  872. goes on to

  873. tell us why.

  874. He ascended

  875. into heaven and

  876. he's seated at

  877. the right hand

  878. of the

  879. father.

  880. Why did

  881. Jesus ascend?

  882. Jesus

  883. ascended to

  884. sit down.

  885. So Jesus

  886. is the

  887. ascended

  888. Lord.

  889. is this

  890. evening seated

  891. in heaven.

  892. And there

  893. are multitudes

  894. standing around

  895. him and there

  896. are multitudes

  897. behind him

  898. before him,

  899. but he is

  900. seated.

  901. Why is he

  902. seated?

  903. Let's go to

  904. Hebrews 10.

  905. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  906. 10.

  907. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  908. 10.

  909. I've got a

  910. page number

  911. there.

  912. Let's find it

  913. yourself.

  914. Hebrews 10.

  915. Hebrews 10

    Hebrews 10:11

  916. verses 11 and

  917. 12.

  918. Here we go.

  919. Hebrews 10

    Hebrews 10:11

  920. verse 11 and

  921. 12.

  922. Every priest

  923. stands daily

  924. at his service

  925. offering

  926. repeatedly the

  927. same sacrifices

  928. which can never

  929. take away

  930. sins.

  931. sins.

  932. But when

  933. Christ

  934. had offered

  935. for all

  936. time

  937. a single

  938. sacrifice

  939. for sins

  940. he sat

  941. down at

  942. the right

  943. hand of

  944. God.

  945. Why does

  946. he do

  947. that?

  948. Why does

  949. he sit?

  950. He ascends

  951. to sit.

  952. Why does

  953. he sit?

  954. For three

  955. important

  956. reasons.

  957. The very

  958. fact that

  959. he sits

  960. is of

  961. enormous

  962. significance

  963. isn't it?

  964. And

  965. it's a

  966. kind of

  967. posture

  968. of rest.

  969. You sit

  970. down after

  971. you've

  972. finished

  973. your work.

  974. After the

  975. completion

  976. of your

  977. work that

  978. someone has

  979. set out

  980. to do.

  981. And

  982. Christ is

  983. seated in

  984. heaven because

  985. of his

  986. finished

  987. work of

  988. atonement.

  989. all his

  990. work is

  991. ended.

  992. Joyfully

  993. we sing

  994. Jesus

  995. has

  996. ascended.

  997. All his

  998. work is

  999. ended.

  1000. Joyfully

  1001. we sing

  1002. Jesus

  1003. has

  1004. ascended.

  1005. He's

  1006. ascended

  1007. because his

  1008. work is

  1009. finished.

  1010. There's

  1011. nothing more

  1012. for Jesus

  1013. to achieve.

  1014. The

  1015. atonement

  1016. process,

  1017. there's

  1018. nothing

  1019. left to

  1020. add to

  1021. it.

  1022. It

  1023. accomplished

  1024. without

  1025. atonement.

  1026. The price

  1027. has been

  1028. paid.

  1029. Jesus'

  1030. ascension

  1031. and his

  1032. sitting

  1033. down at

  1034. the right

  1035. hand of

  1036. God

  1037. proclaims

  1038. that this

  1039. is a

  1040. finished

  1041. work,

  1042. a completed

  1043. work.

  1044. There's

  1045. nothing that

  1046. I have to

  1047. add tonight.

  1048. There's

  1049. nothing you

  1050. have to

  1051. add.

  1052. There's

  1053. nothing that

  1054. you have

  1055. to achieve.

  1056. Nothing I

  1057. made you

  1058. to achieve.

  1059. I simply

  1060. humbly

  1061. come in

  1062. faith to

  1063. receive it.

  1064. There's

  1065. of course

  1066. huge

  1067. significance

  1068. there,

  1069. not just

  1070. in the

  1071. fact that

  1072. he sits,

  1073. but where

  1074. he sits.

  1075. Because he

  1076. sits on

  1077. a throne.

  1078. And there

  1079. on that

  1080. throne he

  1081. is worshipped

  1082. as the

  1083. king of

  1084. kings.

  1085. And the

  1086. lord of

  1087. lords.

  1088. And he

  1089. is in the

  1090. place of

  1091. absolute

  1092. authority and

  1093. sovereign

  1094. power.

  1095. But he

  1096. sits on

  1097. that throne

  1098. waiting.

  1099. Verse 13

  1100. when Christ

  1101. had offered

  1102. for all

  1103. time a

  1104. single

  1105. sacrifice

  1106. for sins

  1107. he sat

  1108. down at

  1109. the right

  1110. hand of

  1111. God

  1112. waiting

  1113. from that

  1114. time until

  1115. his enemies

  1116. should be

  1117. made a

  1118. footstool for

  1119. his feet.

  1120. Waiting.

  1121. The

  1122. angelic figures

  1123. do you

  1124. remember what

  1125. George read

  1126. to us in

  1127. Acts chapter

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  1128. 1.

  1129. They're with

  1130. him at

  1131. the ascension

  1132. and they

  1133. remind the

  1134. disciples

  1135. don't they?

  1136. They're

  1137. standing there

  1138. open mouth

  1139. and gorg

  1140. that Jesus

  1141. has just

  1142. ascended into

  1143. heaven.

  1144. And they

  1145. say this

  1146. man of

  1147. Galilee

  1148. why do you

  1149. stand looking

  1150. into heaven?

  1151. This Jesus

  1152. who was

  1153. taken up

  1154. from you

  1155. into heaven

  1156. will come

  1157. in the

  1158. same way

  1159. as you

  1160. saw him

  1161. go into

  1162. heaven.

  1163. One day

  1164. he'll

  1165. return.

  1166. And the

  1167. return of

  1168. Jesus

  1169. that is

  1170. the final

  1171. act of

  1172. what Jesus

  1173. came to

  1174. earth to

  1175. do.

  1176. And now

  1177. Jesus the

  1178. reigning

  1179. Lord the

  1180. sovereign

  1181. king of

  1182. kings this

  1183. evening is

  1184. waiting.

  1185. And what's

  1186. he waiting

  1187. for tonight?

  1188. He's waiting

  1189. for that day

  1190. which has not

  1191. yet come.

  1192. Because not

  1193. every knee

  1194. has bowed

  1195. to Jesus

  1196. Christ and

  1197. not every

  1198. tongue has

  1199. confessed him

  1200. as Lord.

  1201. And not

  1202. everyone has

  1203. acknowledged that

  1204. he is the

  1205. only saviour but

  1206. one day all

  1207. his people

  1208. will do.

  1209. And every

  1210. knee will

  1211. bow and

  1212. every tongue

  1213. will confess

  1214. that Jesus

  1215. Christ is

  1216. Lord to

  1217. the glory

  1218. of God

  1219. the Father.

  1220. And the

  1221. ascension is

  1222. the signal

  1223. to all

  1224. earth and

  1225. heaven that

  1226. Jesus the

  1227. enthroned

  1228. saviour is

  1229. waiting for

  1230. that day

  1231. and come

  1232. it well.

  1233. And it's

  1234. something that

  1235. no opinion

  1236. pole is

  1237. ever going

  1238. to alter.

  1239. It's the

  1240. ultimate

  1241. certainty.

  1242. There's

  1243. importance to

  1244. the fact that

  1245. he sits,

  1246. there's

  1247. importance to

  1248. the fact that

  1249. where he

  1250. sits and

  1251. last of

  1252. all there's

  1253. importance

  1254. about who

  1255. he sits

  1256. beside.

  1257. Because he's

  1258. seated at

  1259. the right

  1260. hand of

  1261. the majesty

  1262. on high.

  1263. Or the

  1264. way Hebrews

  1265. said he's

  1266. seated at

  1267. the right

  1268. hand of

  1269. God.

  1270. Where is

  1271. he sitting

  1272. tonight?

  1273. He's

  1274. sitting as

  1275. it were

  1276. at the

  1277. year of

  1278. the eternal

  1279. God.

  1280. He's there

  1281. beside him.

  1282. And he's

  1283. there not

  1284. only as

  1285. our king

  1286. but he's

  1287. there

  1288. supremely

  1289. as our

  1290. priest,

  1291. our

  1292. intercessor,

  1293. our

  1294. mediator.

  1295. And he

  1296. sits on

  1297. the throne

  1298. beside his

  1299. father.

  1300. And he's

  1301. there to

  1302. intercede

  1303. for us.

  1304. Do you

  1305. see now

  1306. why it's

  1307. so important?

  1308. that our

  1309. flesh is

  1310. in heaven

  1311. because he

  1312. wore our

  1313. nature.

  1314. He

  1315. entered

  1316. into every

  1317. anguish of

  1318. human experience.

  1319. He knew

  1320. what it was

  1321. to be

  1322. despised and

  1323. rejected of

  1324. men.

  1325. And that

  1326. same

  1327. Jesus wears

  1328. our nature

  1329. and glory

  1330. this evening.

  1331. you know

  1332. don't you

  1333. son of

  1334. you what

  1335. it is

  1336. to say

  1337. to someone

  1338. who's in

  1339. great pain

  1340. and hurt

  1341. to be able

  1342. to say

  1343. to them

  1344. I just

  1345. want you

  1346. to know

  1347. that I've

  1348. been there.

  1349. I've

  1350. been there.

  1351. And Jesus

  1352. says my

  1353. child I've

  1354. been there.

  1355. And I

  1356. know what

  1357. to ask

  1358. of the

  1359. father for

  1360. you.

  1361. And so

  1362. tonight we

  1363. thank God

  1364. that our

  1365. flesh is

  1366. in heaven

  1367. and we

  1368. need to

  1369. explore it

  1370. more.

  1371. May God

  1372. give us a

  1373. thirst to do

  1374. so.

  1375. Let's pray.
