  1. We're carrying on looking at the opening chapters of Luke this morning. Last week we looked at Zechariah didn't we?

  2. And as we look at Mary this morning, like with Zechariah last Sunday, we see another one of Luke's sort of diversions off of the events and the happenings into a personal story of faith.

  3. Of people dealing with extraordinary announcements of God doing extraordinary things, of miracles, of pregnancy and old age for Zechariah and his wife, and now a virgin birth and pregnancy.

  4. And Luke places Mary's story next to Zechariah, who we saw earlier, because they are two very, very similar stories, but they are not the same.

  5. And the slight difference between them is the point that Luke wants to make this morning.

  6. And they are similar, Zechariah and Mary, because both of them seem to have shades of doubt in what the angels announced, don't they?

  7. They both ask questions. Do you remember? Zechariah asks the question back in verse 18, how shall I know this?

  8. And Mary asks a similar question in verse 34, how shall this be since I am a virgin?

  9. So they are similar, and they both have questions and doubts, I guess, but they are not the same.

  10. Because last Sunday morning we saw that Gabriel rebuked Zechariah for his question, but Mary doesn't get rebuked for her, does she?

  11. Her question, she receives honour. Elizabeth says, verse 45, blessed is she who believed what was spoken to her would be fulfilled.

  12. Mary, by contrast, is held up as a model to us of how to respond to God.

  13. She's a model of faith.

  14. Both of them have their doubts and their questions, but between them there are different kinds of doubts.

  15. There are different ways of questioning God.

  16. Doubt is nuanced by Luke.

  17. It's not a black and white thing.

  18. There is one way of doubting God that he disapproves of,

  19. and another that he is gentle and patient and kind and honours.

  20. We all have doubts, don't we?

  21. We all have questions.

  22. But the question is, which sort of doubts do we have?

  23. Luke wants us to question our questions this morning.

  24. So let's dive in and see the subtle contrast between these two characters.

  25. And think to yourself, which one am I most like?

  26. Think, I need to question my questions.

  27. What makes Mary's questions different?

  28. Well, three moments in her story.

  29. First of all, see her simple acceptance.

  30. See her simple acceptance.

  31. If you look closely at the questions that Zechariah and Mary ask,

  32. there is a subtle difference between them.

  33. Back in verse 18, look very closely at his question.

  34. How shall I know this?

  35. Your barren wife is going to have a child.

  36. How shall I know this?

  37. Zechariah asks for a proof of what has been promised.

  38. He wants a confirmation.

  39. He wants a sign that this miracle is going to happen at all.

  40. At what sign will you give me?

  41. How will I know that this is going to happen, he says.

  42. What evidence are you going to give me?

  43. There is a sense, isn't there, that his doubt is in the event itself actually happening.

  44. He questions the credibility of God's words, of the miracle.

  45. Whereas Mary asks something subtly different, verse 34.

  46. How will this be?

  47. Since I'm a virgin.

  48. Zechariah, how will I know it?

  49. Mary, how will it happen?

  50. See, Mary wonders at the mystery of the mechanics, of the how.

  51. But not that the miracle will actually happen.

  52. She's not married.

  53. She's never been with a man.

  54. So, how will I get pregnant?

  55. But in the question, there is this underlying sense of acceptance.

  56. She may not understand how.

  57. There are unknowns about how this is going to happen.

  58. But she is willing to accept that it will happen.

  59. And she doesn't ask for a proof that it will happen.

  60. Even if she hasn't got the foggiest clue how.

  61. She says, I am the servant of the Lord.

  62. Let it be according to your word.

  63. She does want an explanation how though.

  64. And the angel is willing to give it.

  65. The miracle is not inexplicable.

  66. There is an answer to the hard question.

  67. And the angel says, verse 35,

  68. It will be the work and power of the Holy Spirit coming on you.

  69. Let's break that down a little bit.

  70. What is the angel saying?

  71. Well, one of Mary's eggs will be fertilised.

  72. And there will be a real human conception.

  73. But there will be no male sperm.

  74. The egg will be miraculously fertilised.

  75. How?

  76. By the power of the Holy Spirit.

  77. Mary's half of DNA and chromosomes will be used in the usual way.

  78. An enormous kind of conception from her point of view.

  79. And this baby will be conceived in her womb.

  80. But somehow the rest will be done by the power of the Holy Spirit.

  81. And the angel says, nothing will be impossible with God.

  82. It will be the power of the Holy Spirit.

  83. And that is the explanation the angel gives.

  84. The angel allows the question and gives an answer.

  85. The Holy Spirit.

  86. Is that crystal clear, Mary?

  87. Any questions?

  88. The problem with that answer, or for some people,

  89. is that it could just raise more questions, couldn't it?

  90. Hang on a minute, hang on.

  91. Before you go, what do you mean by the power of the Holy Spirit?

  92. How is the Holy Spirit going to do that?

  93. What actually will happen on a microscopic level?

  94. How will the Holy Spirit fertilise my egg?

  95. How will this conception happen?

  96. See, the answer to the first how question

  97. just releases a wave of more how questions, doesn't it?

  98. But Mary doesn't ask those how questions.

  99. There comes a point where Mary stops asking how

  100. and she accepts how.

  101. That is the explanation she gets.

  102. It's the Holy Spirit, Mary.

  103. It's not a gullible acceptance, though.

  104. Don't think that.

  105. We know that Mary actually is a very deep thinker.

  106. She's the kind of person who mulls things over.

  107. She thinks about things a lot.

  108. We read elsewhere in the Gospels

  109. that Mary pondered the words that she heard.

  110. She took them into her heart.

  111. She pondered them.

  112. She thought about them.

  113. Here in verse 29, when the angel first greets her,

  114. she tries to discern what kind of greeting this was.

  115. You could translate that as she examines these words.

  116. She took stock.

  117. She took a step back.

  118. She tried to ponder what this greeting was.

  119. Mary was a thinker.

  120. She wasn't a stupid, gullible, impressionable teenager.

  121. She was the kind of woman who asked,

  122. what on earth is going on here?

  123. Am I seeing things?

  124. Is this real?

  125. She's actually a very rational woman.

  126. But for Mary, the rational, intelligent thinking person,

  127. she knows that her rational thinking has a limit.

  128. And for her, nothing more is necessary

  129. than to just know that nothing with God is impossible

  130. and it will be the power of the Holy Spirit.

  131. She doesn't say to the angel,

  132. oh, I get it now.

  133. I totally understand how this is going to work.

  134. I'm totally convinced that it will all be easy and wonderful

  135. and I get it completely.

  136. Of course not.

  137. She doesn't know everything.

  138. There are lots more how questions to be asked.

  139. But she knows enough.

  140. She would have known about the Spirit of God

  141. as a devout Jew

  142. through the Bible that she had

  143. and his immense power

  144. that he was there in creation

  145. and he created something out of nothing.

  146. That he's worked in the history of God's people.

  147. That he's brought life from the dead.

  148. That this is the kind of power that this Holy Spirit has.

  149. That he has.

  150. So she does know enough.

  151. And so there can be a simple acceptance.

  152. Because as soon as you mention the power of the Holy Spirit

  153. she knows, whoa, I'm out of my depth here.

  154. And although she knows to use a rational mind

  155. and although we should do that too,

  156. being a Christian does not mean throwing your brain in the bin

  157. and just being impressionable

  158. but being a Christian means that we realise

  159. that God is bigger than our brains.

  160. God's work and his miraculous work

  161. is bigger than our thinking can grasp.

  162. And Mary realises that.

  163. And so she just says

  164. I am the servant of the Lord.

  165. Let it be according to your word.

  166. It's basically saying,

  167. Amen, even though I do not get it.

  168. God doesn't expect us to submit our faith to him

  169. without reason and without explanation.

  170. But often God's explanation

  171. will push the limits of our minds, won't it?

  172. And of our reason.

  173. Nothing will be impossible with God.

  174. It will be the power of the Holy Spirit.

  175. And the limits of our mind

  176. mean that she will not be able to understand

  177. all of the hard questions.

  178. The work of the Holy Spirit

  179. who is God

  180. bursting the boundaries

  181. of our human understanding.

  182. And often when we ask God how

  183. the answer just gives us more questions.

  184. Because our minds

  185. and our human limited thinking

  186. can never be enough

  187. to contain the power of the Holy Spirit.

  188. We just can't do that.

  189. And if we could

  190. then he wouldn't be God, would he?

  191. A virgin birth?

  192. How will the Holy Spirit do this?

  193. Let me tell you the answer this morning.

  194. I just haven't got a clue.

  195. None of us have.

  196. It's not that we're stupid.

  197. It's just that God

  198. is infinitely more intelligent than us.

  199. It would be like trying to explain

  200. particle physics to an ant,

  201. wouldn't it?

  202. This is the God of the Bible

  203. who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit

  204. in one God

  205. who can be accepted

  206. and believed by a simple child

  207. and trusted in

  208. by the most simple of the people

  209. and yet the most deeply thinking theologians

  210. are dwarfed

  211. by the profundity of who he is

  212. and what he can do.

  213. And when someone hears the gospel

  214. and asks that question

  215. how can this be

  216. actually you can be sure

  217. you've heard the gospel properly.

  218. There is a sense where

  219. if we don't ask that question at all

  220. we haven't really heard the gospel fully

  221. or we've just forgotten it

  222. or it hasn't been explained fully.

  223. If we find the God of the Bible

  224. just a little bit impossible

  225. or inconceivable

  226. or even ridiculous

  227. of a just God

  228. who forgives wicked people

  229. of a holy God

  230. who comes to dwell

  231. with sinful people

  232. of dead people

  233. coming back to life

  234. of a God

  235. who became a man

  236. to die for wicked people

  237. so that they could know him forever

  238. there is something hugely

  239. mysterious about that.

  240. hugely perplexing

  241. about the whole thing

  242. deeply mysterious.

  243. There should be this sense

  244. where we ask God

  245. how

  246. in everything that he does

  247. there is something healthy

  248. in those kind of questions

  249. to understand the magnitude

  250. of his power

  251. the Holy Spirit

  252. that there must be

  253. those sort of questions from us

  254. doesn't there as creatures?

  255. And yet

  256. we can simply accept

  257. that we can't understand it all

  258. and we can't keep asking

  259. how and ever get to the point

  260. where the questions will stop.

  261. That is why

  262. God is worth knowing

  263. and worshipping

  264. and asking about

  265. that there are always

  266. more depths

  267. to his character

  268. and his work

  269. to dive into

  270. deeper and deeper.

  271. and so we have got

  272. to come to a point

  273. like Mary

  274. where we humbly

  275. just settle down

  276. and accept

  277. that we are not God

  278. and that we are not

  279. as clever as him

  280. and we are not as powerful

  281. as the Holy Spirit

  282. and like Mary

  283. say

  284. oh the power of the Spirit

  285. well that is enough then.

  286. And so this thinking

  287. woman

  288. Mary is the model

  289. in that simple faith

  290. in that simple acceptance.

  291. acceptance.

  292. And secondly though

  293. she has an active obedience.

  294. She has an active obedience.

  295. The thing with Mary

  296. is that she turns

  297. acceptance into action.

  298. I'm the Lord's servant

  299. she says

  300. and she

  301. she arises

  302. with haste

  303. verse 39

  304. and goes to the hill country

  305. and to Zechariah

  306. and Elizabeth's house.

  307. She acts

  308. she does something.

  309. And because it is one thing

  310. to agree with God's word

  311. but it's another

  312. to act upon it.

  313. And Mary shows us

  314. that the root

  315. of belief

  316. is obedience.

  317. This isn't just

  318. some intellectual

  319. assent

  320. to what the angel says.

  321. It is

  322. an entire surrender

  323. to what the angel

  324. has said.

  325. Just think

  326. what that would have

  327. meant for her.

  328. Accepting

  329. and obeying

  330. God's plan.

  331. it will mean

  332. something extremely

  333. difficult for her

  334. actually.

  335. It could mean

  336. a lifetime

  337. of embarrassment

  338. and of stigma

  339. as the woman

  340. who in that

  341. conservative society

  342. had a child

  343. out of wedlock.

  344. She could become

  345. a social outcast

  346. as she brings

  347. this child

  348. into that sort of world.

  349. And think for her

  350. plans of life

  351. with Joseph.

  352. She would have been

  353. like any other

  354. young woman

  355. who was engaged

  356. to be married.

  357. She maybe imagined

  358. setting up the family

  359. home, didn't she?

  360. She had plans

  361. maybe they could

  362. have kids

  363. two, three,

  364. maybe four.

  365. Joseph runs

  366. the family business.

  367. She probably had

  368. it all mapped out.

  369. And now suddenly

  370. all of that

  371. has to change.

  372. And she's plunged

  373. into the unknown

  374. where life feels

  375. like there are

  376. just more questions

  377. than there are

  378. answers.

  379. And it could have

  380. been so hard

  381. for her to believe

  382. because it was

  383. going to be

  384. so hard to obey.

  385. She might not

  386. get it all.

  387. She may not

  388. even like it all.

  389. But she does it.

  390. Whatever comes,

  391. she says to the angel,

  392. I accept it.

  393. And I can put

  394. all of my plans

  395. and all of my hopes

  396. aside since this

  397. is God's will.

  398. And Mary shows

  399. that belief is tied

  400. to obedience.

  401. But on the flip side

  402. she shows us as well

  403. that the problem

  404. with disbelief

  405. is disobedience.

  406. And often people

  407. don't believe

  408. God's word

  409. and the gospel

  410. because they

  411. don't want

  412. to obey

  413. the gospel.

  414. The philosopher

  415. Blaise Pascal

  416. said that in faith

  417. there is enough

  418. light for those

  419. who want to believe

  420. and enough

  421. shadows to blind

  422. those who don't.

  423. As long as you

  424. don't want to

  425. obey God

  426. you'll find

  427. shadows.

  428. You'll find

  429. shadows in all

  430. that goes on

  431. this morning

  432. if you want to.

  433. You'll find

  434. shadows in every

  435. conversation

  436. that you have

  437. with someone

  438. who believes.

  439. shadows.

  440. You'll find

  441. shadows if you

  442. want them to be

  443. there in every

  444. part of the

  445. Bible.

  446. You'll be looking

  447. for shadows

  448. all of the time.

  449. Maybe you've met

  450. people like that.

  451. They major

  452. on the unknowns

  453. as if they are

  454. an excuse

  455. not to act

  456. and obey.

  457. You just keep

  458. saying well

  459. I've just got

  460. more questions.

  461. But our problem

  462. in that is that

  463. we could be

  464. waiting too long

  465. before we obey.

  466. You say

  467. you've got

  468. questions

  469. you've got

  470. doubts

  471. you're just

  472. looking into

  473. it

  474. you're just

  475. investigating

  476. but some of

  477. us have just

  478. been doing

  479. that for far

  480. too long.

  481. But you won't

  482. do anything

  483. and you won't

  484. move anywhere

  485. until you feel

  486. you've been

  487. satisfied with

  488. all your answers

  489. and all of

  490. your doubts

  491. and you want

  492. it all so

  493. you're holding

  494. back from

  495. obeying the

  496. Lord Jesus.

  497. But let me

  498. tell you this

  499. morning having

  500. questions and

  501. doubts does not

  502. set you apart

  503. from anyone else

  504. in this room.

  505. having questions

  506. is no reason

  507. not to believe

  508. and obey.

  509. It is no

  510. excuse.

  511. It wasn't

  512. for Mary.

  513. Your disbelief

  514. actually with

  515. all due

  516. respect

  517. it is because

  518. of disobedience.

  519. It's an

  520. unwillingness

  521. to say to

  522. God

  523. I'm your

  524. servant.

  525. And you

  526. don't want

  527. to do that

  528. because you'll

  529. have to let

  530. go of your

  531. control.

  532. But others

  533. of you

  534. you've maybe

  535. got questions

  536. and even

  537. doubts

  538. but you

  539. want to

  540. move forward

  541. and you

  542. want to

  543. obey.

  544. You've got

  545. no idea

  546. how God

  547. is going

  548. to do

  549. the things

  550. that he's

  551. promised

  552. he's going

  553. to do

  554. in your

  555. life.

  556. You don't

  557. know the

  558. hows.

  559. There are

  560. still lots

  561. of questions

  562. but the

  563. alternatives

  564. to the

  565. Lord Jesus

  566. are far

  567. less credible

  568. in the world

  569. and around

  570. the world

  571. and you've

  572. been with

  573. his people

  574. for long

  575. enough to

  576. know that

  577. there is

  578. something

  579. different

  580. about the

  581. Lord Jesus

  582. his people

  583. and so

  584. you're

  585. willing to

  586. go with

  587. it.

  588. Even if

  589. you don't

  590. understand it

  591. all entirely.

  592. What I'm

  593. trying to say

  594. is that in

  595. this room

  596. there is a

  597. whole spectrum

  598. isn't there

  599. of belief

  600. and of

  601. faith.

  602. And what

  603. we realise

  604. here Luke

  605. shows us

  606. that some

  607. can doubt

  608. with an

  609. open mind

  610. and others

  611. can doubt

  612. with a

  613. closed mind.

  614. And Mary

  615. has the

  616. right kind

  617. of doubts

  618. and questions

  619. because even

  620. though she

  621. has questions

  622. she still

  623. obeys

  624. and she's

  625. willing to

  626. let go of

  627. control of

  628. her life.

  629. She doesn't

  630. know everything

  631. but she

  632. knows enough.

  633. It's the

  634. power of the

  635. Holy Spirit

  636. and she's

  637. willing to

  638. act on it.

  639. Some people

  640. doubt asking

  641. questions like

  642. her.

  643. Some people

  644. doubt closing

  645. off the

  646. possibility of

  647. answers.

  648. And you're

  649. always looking

  650. for shadows

  651. but it's

  652. disobedience

  653. really.

  654. C.S.

  655. Lewis in

  656. his book

  657. The Great

  658. Divorce

  659. pictures a

  660. conversation

  661. between a

  662. believer and

  663. a non-believer

  664. and one guy

  665. he's a

  666. disbeliever

  667. says to the

  668. other

  669. for me

  670. there is no

  671. such thing

  672. as a final

  673. answer.

  674. The free

  675. wind of

  676. inquiry must

  677. always continue

  678. to blow

  679. through the

  680. mind must

  681. it not.

  682. Just keep

  683. asking questions.

  684. He says

  685. on the

  686. journey of

  687. faith to

  688. travel is

  689. better than

  690. to arrive.

  691. In other

  692. words it is

  693. better to be

  694. sceptical

  695. forever.

  696. Don't act

  697. don't believe

  698. don't move

  699. forwards

  700. don't trust

  701. just hold

  702. back and keep

  703. asking questions.

  704. that is

  705. better.

  706. And actually

  707. that is

  708. kind of the

  709. modern way

  710. isn't it?

  711. That's the

  712. virtuous way.

  713. The second

  714. replies there

  715. was a time

  716. when you

  717. asked questions

  718. because you

  719. wanted answers

  720. and you

  721. were glad

  722. when you

  723. found them.

  724. It was

  725. when you

  726. were a

  727. child.

  728. So become

  729. that child

  730. again even

  731. now.

  732. The

  733. disbelievers

  734. said ah but

  735. when I became

  736. a man I

  737. put away

  738. childish

  739. things.

  740. asking

  741. questions

  742. because you

  743. wanted

  744. answers.

  745. There is

  746. something

  747. wonderfully

  748. simple about

  749. that isn't

  750. there and

  751. honest and

  752. sincere about

  753. that and

  754. almost childlike

  755. innocence in

  756. that.

  757. And God

  758. honours those

  759. kind of

  760. questions.

  761. But there is

  762. a pride at

  763. work when we

  764. stop that.

  765. And actually

  766. in Christian

  767. faith there

  768. comes a point

  769. and with

  770. Mary we

  771. have got to

  772. know when

  773. the asking

  774. just has to

  775. lead to

  776. acting

  777. finally.

  778. That whatever

  779. God sends

  780. my way it

  781. is best and

  782. I surrender

  783. to him.

  784. And I

  785. don't understand

  786. all of it

  787. I may not

  788. even agree

  789. with it

  790. all but

  791. I will do

  792. it because

  793. he knows

  794. best.

  795. Come what

  796. may in all

  797. the unknowns

  798. and in all

  799. the fearful

  800. things that

  801. God may be

  802. asking me to

  803. walk into

  804. that God

  805. calls us

  806. to maybe

  807. of even

  808. losing

  809. status and

  810. of being

  811. thought of

  812. in the wrong

  813. way just

  814. like Mary

  815. you don't

  816. have to

  817. understand it

  818. all fully

  819. and we're

  820. fools if we

  821. say we can

  822. understand it

  823. all fully.

  824. You don't

  825. even have to

  826. like it all

  827. fully yet.

  828. You just

  829. have to

  830. obey it.

  831. Simple

  832. acceptance

  833. and an

  834. act of

  835. obedience and

  836. then thirdly

  837. and lastly

  838. a wonderful

  839. assurance

  840. a wonderful

  841. assurance

  842. and this is

  843. when Mary

  844. goes to see

  845. Elizabeth

  846. and what

  847. Mary

  848. does is she

  849. acts upon

  850. the angel's

  851. words and

  852. she goes to

  853. the place

  854. where she can

  855. get assurance

  856. of this

  857. news.

  858. If she

  859. goes to

  860. see Elizabeth

  861. she will

  862. get confirmation

  863. won't she

  864. either way

  865. that the

  866. angel is

  867. real and

  868. has told

  869. her the

  870. truth.

  871. So this

  872. visit to

  873. Elizabeth

  874. is a

  875. means of

  876. assurance

  877. for her

  878. assurance

  879. of faith.

  880. Seeing

  881. Elizabeth

  882. will build

  883. up Mary's

  884. faith and

  885. help her

  886. in her

  887. doubts.

  888. So Mary

  889. acts and

  890. she goes

  891. there.

  892. She avails

  893. herself of

  894. the means

  895. of assurance

  896. and Elizabeth

  897. confirms

  898. this faith.

  899. She confirms

  900. what the

  901. angel has

  902. said.

  903. If you look

  904. at verse

  905. 42 and

  906. verse 43

  907. Elizabeth

  908. says

  909. blessed

  910. are you

  911. among

  912. women

  913. and

  914. blessed

  915. is the

  916. fruit

  917. of

  918. your

  919. womb.

  920. Why

  921. is this

  922. granted

  923. to me

  924. that the

  925. mother

  926. of my

  927. Lord

  928. should

  929. come

  930. to me?

  931. Now

  932. as far

  933. as we

  934. know

  935. Elizabeth

  936. has not

  937. heard about

  938. this before

  939. Mary gets

  940. there.

  941. And Luke

  942. shows us

  943. in the

  944. timings

  945. there's

  946. been no

  947. gap

  948. of time

  949. that Mary

  950. receives the

  951. announcement

  952. and then

  953. goes to

  954. visit

  955. Elizabeth.

  956. So

  957. independently

  958. by some

  959. God

  960. given

  961. prophetic

  962. knowledge

  963. Elizabeth

  964. tells

  965. Mary

  966. what Mary

  967. has gone

  968. to tell

  969. Elizabeth.

  970. And what

  971. a boost

  972. that was

  973. to Mary's

  974. faith.

  975. That God

  976. has told

  977. the same

  978. thing to

  979. somebody

  980. else.

  981. This

  982. wasn't a

  983. hallucination

  984. it wasn't

  985. a dream

  986. it is

  987. real.

  988. And

  989. Elizabeth's

  990. miraculous

  991. pregnancy

  992. just like

  993. the angel

  994. says

  995. what a

  996. boost

  997. to her

  998. faith.

  999. And she

  1000. really

  1001. needed

  1002. that.

  1003. As stupid

  1004. and flimsy

  1005. and weak

  1006. as she

  1007. may have

  1008. felt to

  1009. go to

  1010. Elizabeth

  1011. and tell

  1012. her this

  1013. news

  1014. she went

  1015. to the

  1016. right place

  1017. where she

  1018. could get

  1019. confirmation

  1020. and she

  1021. took a

  1022. risk in

  1023. a way.

  1024. And in

  1025. her obedience

  1026. even in

  1027. the unknown

  1028. she receives

  1029. a huge

  1030. blessing of

  1031. assurance.

  1032. And if

  1033. we're like

  1034. Mary

  1035. if we're

  1036. struggling

  1037. with the

  1038. unknowns

  1039. and with

  1040. questions

  1041. and even

  1042. with doubts

  1043. but we

  1044. want to

  1045. know answers

  1046. and we

  1047. want assurance

  1048. this is how

  1049. God deals

  1050. with us

  1051. isn't it?

  1052. When we

  1053. are sincerely

  1054. seeking

  1055. assurance

  1056. the Lord

  1057. knows the

  1058. strains

  1059. that his

  1060. word has

  1061. on our

  1062. minds

  1063. at times.

  1064. this would

  1065. have been

  1066. a huge

  1067. psychological

  1068. strain for

  1069. Mary to

  1070. get her

  1071. head around

  1072. this.

  1073. And the

  1074. Lord knows

  1075. that our

  1076. minds and

  1077. our human

  1078. thinking can't

  1079. understand it

  1080. all like

  1081. he does.

  1082. He knows

  1083. that we're

  1084. dust.

  1085. But when we

  1086. come to him

  1087. and we go to

  1088. the places

  1089. that he's

  1090. arranged to

  1091. assure us

  1092. then he

  1093. longs to

  1094. boost our

  1095. faith.

  1096. When we

  1097. obey him

  1098. he assures

  1099. us.

  1100. Dietrich

  1101. Bonhoeffer

  1102. says that

  1103. only he

  1104. who believes

  1105. is obedient

  1106. but only

  1107. he who is

  1108. obedient

  1109. believes.

  1110. It's

  1111. interesting

  1112. that isn't

  1113. it?

  1114. The more

  1115. we obey

  1116. and act

  1117. and move

  1118. on what

  1119. we know

  1120. as little

  1121. as it

  1122. may feel

  1123. that we

  1124. know

  1125. the more

  1126. God

  1127. assures

  1128. and strengthens

  1129. our faith.

  1130. he who

  1131. is obedient

  1132. believes

  1133. when you

  1134. start

  1135. acting

  1136. he will

  1137. start

  1138. assuring

  1139. more and

  1140. more

  1141. and when

  1142. we step

  1143. out into

  1144. the unknown

  1145. he is

  1146. there waiting

  1147. to boost

  1148. our faith.

  1149. There's a

  1150. story of a

  1151. king who

  1152. went into

  1153. a village

  1154. to see

  1155. his subjects

  1156. and he

  1157. met a

  1158. beggar

  1159. sitting by

  1160. the roadside

  1161. and when

  1162. the king

  1163. came along

  1164. he held

  1165. out his

  1166. bowl

  1167. for a

  1168. generous

  1169. gift

  1170. from the

  1171. king

  1172. but the

  1173. beggar

  1174. was shocked

  1175. when instead

  1176. the king

  1177. asked the

  1178. beggar for

  1179. something

  1180. so the

  1181. beggar

  1182. reluctantly

  1183. gave the

  1184. king

  1185. three

  1186. grains

  1187. of rice

  1188. at the

  1189. end of

  1190. the day

  1191. the beggar

  1192. looked in

  1193. his bowl

  1194. to look

  1195. at his

  1196. takings

  1197. and right

  1198. at the

  1199. bottom

  1200. of his

  1201. bowl

  1202. he noticed

  1203. three

  1204. grains

  1205. of pure

  1206. gold

  1207. the king

  1208. had

  1209. marked

  1210. his

  1211. obedience

  1212. with

  1213. blessing

  1214. the beggar

  1215. said to

  1216. himself

  1217. oh if

  1218. only I

  1219. had given

  1220. him it

  1221. all

  1222. Mary's

  1223. story shows

  1224. us that he

  1225. is a God

  1226. who is gentle

  1227. and he is

  1228. kind

  1229. with our

  1230. questions

  1231. and he

  1232. loves to

  1233. bless

  1234. and he

  1235. loves to

  1236. enrich

  1237. and assure

  1238. us as we

  1239. obey him

  1240. and as we

  1241. give for him

  1242. our lives

  1243. when we can

  1244. let the

  1245. asking

  1246. lead to

  1247. accepting

  1248. and acting

  1249. at last

  1250. he longs

  1251. to get

  1252. assuring

  1253. and you know

  1254. the virgin

  1255. birth is just

  1256. the beginning

  1257. isn't it

  1258. of Luke's

  1259. gospel

  1260. there's more

  1261. to come

  1262. healings

  1263. and

  1264. resurrections

  1265. and miracles

  1266. all over

  1267. the place

  1268. and there

  1269. will be

  1270. questions

  1271. there'll be

  1272. even more

  1273. questions

  1274. if you

  1275. read Luke

  1276. but the

  1277. virgin birth

  1278. stands at

  1279. the gates

  1280. of Christmas

  1281. like a

  1282. kind of

  1283. sentinel

  1284. the virgin

  1285. birth stands

  1286. actually at

  1287. the threshold

  1288. of Christianity

  1289. at the threshold

  1290. of God

  1291. himself

  1292. and it

  1293. makes us

  1294. question

  1295. our questions

  1296. and if

  1297. the questions

  1298. are just

  1299. for finding

  1300. more and

  1301. more shadows

  1302. and closing

  1303. off answers

  1304. from God

  1305. then the

  1306. virgin birth

  1307. bars the

  1308. way for us

  1309. doesn't it

  1310. towards God

  1311. but if we

  1312. can see the

  1313. virgin birth

  1314. and we can

  1315. be like Mary

  1316. we can just

  1317. say I don't

  1318. understand it

  1319. all

  1320. and I might

  1321. not get it

  1322. all

  1323. but I want

  1324. to accept

  1325. it

  1326. and I want

  1327. to act

  1328. upon it

  1329. then your

  1330. king waits

  1331. to assure

  1332. you in it

  1333. for by the

  1334. power of the

  1335. Holy Spirit

  1336. nothing is

  1337. impossible

  1338. with God

  1339. let's pray
