  1. Matthew 22, 1-14. When Chris did the reading, if you're familiar with the Bible, you might have thought déjà vu. You might have said to yourself, I've read something very like that somewhere else before.

  2. And you'd be quite right, wouldn't you? Because if you're precisely in Luke's Gospel, in chapter 14, there's another parable, or story, and Jesus sounds almost identical.

  3. But it's quite different, and quite distinct.

  4. A story about a man who was holding a feast, and he sent out invitations, which was normal for a feast.

  5. And then people were pressed to come. And the emphasis of that parable, if you remember it, is that people made excuses.

  6. Got a field, got lots, and all sorts of things. I'm getting married. I can't come.

  7. The emphasis of this parable, though, is there's a king who has made a feast.

  8. And this feast is a wedding feast, and the person who's getting married is his son.

  9. And the emphasis, as we're going to look at it, is not so much on the excuses that are made,

  10. as upon the refusal of those who were invited.

  11. They refused even after repeated invitations.

  12. And we'll see how the way that they refused elicited the anger of the king.

  13. And the account of Matthew has a sting in the tale, it adds a little bit,

  14. a particularly sharp reminder that the invitation the king gave is to be accepted on the king's terms.

  15. And so the story is a different one from Luke 14.

  16. Here in Matthew 22, the circumstances of this story are different.

  17. Jesus has been engaged, has he, with controversy with the religious leaders.

  18. It's the start of the week, when he will be killed on the Friday.

  19. And they're moving to the point where they're trying to ensnare him, and arrest him, and destroy him.

  20. And they hope to silence him forever.

  21. They're challenging him on his authority.

  22. Who do you think you are?

  23. He teaches and performs miracles.

  24. And it's within that context that Jesus tells this remarkable story.

  25. There are four scenes in the story.

  26. In verses 1 to 6, there is the invitation.

  27. The rejection of an invitation.

  28. In verse 7, there is the indignation of the king.

  29. The king is enraged and sent in his army.

  30. And then thirdly, you see, the third scene is, this invitation is redirected

  31. to an altogether different company of people.

  32. And then the final scene is the exclusion of an intruder.

  33. For those who are listening when Jesus preached, it wouldn't have been difficult

  34. for those who immediately grasp who and what he was speaking about.

  35. All of these parables focus on them.

  36. He is addressing the Jewish leaders.

  37. He's addressing the people who are already plotting his death.

  38. And he's at the same time explaining to them his ministry.

  39. And it doesn't take much imagination or much knowledge

  40. to see that Jesus is speaking about that.

  41. When the king gives his invitation.

  42. When he's preparing the marriage of his son.

  43. And the invitation is pressed upon the king's subjects.

  44. And they refuse.

  45. And the king is angry.

  46. It's very easy for you and I to see exactly who Jesus is speaking about.

  47. And as we go through, you'll see that this is not only speaking to those original hearers.

  48. But the sting in the tale is we find ourselves in this story this morning.

  49. So first of all, the rejection of an invitation.

  50. The rejection of an invitation.

  51. You need to realize that there's a preliminary scene which we all get here.

  52. Jesus doesn't even speak about it because it was taken for granted

  53. that when anyone was sending out invitations in this particular time in history.

  54. There was of course no postal service.

  55. No email.

  56. No church suite.

  57. No Facebook.

  58. No Insta.

  59. But they did have couriers.

  60. And the king had couriers who were his servants.

  61. And he dispatched through the kingdom

  62. with the initial invitation that we don't see here

  63. that his son was getting married.

  64. The invitations are not like the wedding invitations we receive.

  65. Saying there's going to be a wedding on such a time

  66. and such a date in such a place.

  67. There was a kind of casual and laid back attitude towards times and dates.

  68. And what would happen is that the messenger would initially have gone and said

  69. that the king's son is getting married.

  70. You're welcome to come.

  71. But then he would have sent another messenger.

  72. He would have gone and said the people concerned.

  73. And he would have said everything is ready.

  74. When that initial invitation came

  75. nobody thought of saying where and when and what time.

  76. Because the invitation would be repeated.

  77. And that's why you get the king saying

  78. the food is ready.

  79. Everything is now ready.

  80. Come.

  81. So the invitation that we read up in verse 1

  82. and verse 2

  83. is actually the second invitation.

  84. It was the pressing personally

  85. of an invitation which had been delivered earlier.

  86. And the couriers went back out

  87. when the wedding plans had come to a climax.

  88. And they say everything is ready.

  89. They would have allowed just the right amount of time

  90. for people to come

  91. to make their way to the king's banquet in Paul.

  92. And they went out and they pressed this invitation

  93. on those people.

  94. And what happened was totally unpredictable.

  95. The altogether unbelievable happened.

  96. To be invited to any wedding

  97. we know, don't we, is a privilege.

  98. But to be invited to the royal wedding

  99. that's a great privilege.

  100. To be invited to the wedding of the king's son

  101. just imagine you've got an invitation

  102. to a royal wedding.

  103. An invitation sent out

  104. from the greatest person

  105. that they could have imagined

  106. for the greatest occasion

  107. that they could ever have imagined.

  108. they were, weren't they,

  109. the most privileged of people.

  110. And so it's an extraordinary thing

  111. to receive this information

  112. and the amazing thing is

  113. they turned it down.

  114. All of them.

  115. You'd have almost thought

  116. that there was a pact.

  117. They refused the invitation.

  118. And the most remarkable thing

  119. of all is that

  120. the king then sent his servants back.

  121. And said there must be

  122. some kind of mistake.

  123. The servants went back again

  124. and they paid no attention.

  125. What makes their refusal

  126. even more extraordinary

  127. is the number of times

  128. they were asked.

  129. It's the third time.

  130. The third time

  131. they'd be invited to the wedding.

  132. The trouble that the king

  133. has gotten to

  134. the nature of the feast

  135. is a glorious

  136. and lavish affair.

  137. And the nature of their reply

  138. well it's extraordinary.

  139. Look at verse 5.

  140. But they paid no attention

  141. and went off.

  142. They just ignored him.

  143. One went off his field

  144. another went off his business.

  145. They were indifferent

  146. about the king's invitation.

  147. They were apathetic.

  148. They couldn't care less.

  149. And they were really saying

  150. to him

  151. they were saying to him

  152. in our lives

  153. and in our plans

  154. you and your plans

  155. have no place.

  156. Do you see the application there?

  157. In our lives

  158. and in our plans

  159. you

  160. and your plans

  161. have no place.

  162. And so they went on

  163. in their daily business.

  164. But not all of them.

  165. I'm looking very sick.

  166. Some of them

  167. get angry.

  168. Some of them

  169. react violently.

  170. And they didn't respond

  171. with apathy

  172. and care less

  173. but with antipathy

  174. with anger

  175. and rebellion

  176. and hostility

  177. and enmity

  178. towards the king.

  179. And some of his

  180. servants

  181. mistreated them

  182. and killed them.

  183. So for some reason

  184. we're not told

  185. in the parable

  186. the overtures

  187. of the king

  188. and the summons

  189. they received

  190. to enter into his plans

  191. and receive the riches

  192. of what he was giving them

  193. infuriates them.

  194. You ask yourself

  195. as you read it

  196. what unburden

  197. would stop you

  198. gladly accepting

  199. and coming

  200. but instead

  201. it actually

  202. enraged them.

  203. it produced

  204. a venom

  205. and a hatred

  206. in them

  207. that ultimately

  208. led to murder

  209. because they murdered

  210. his servants

  211. and abused others.

  212. And it wouldn't be

  213. taking much thought

  214. for this

  215. or much imagination

  216. for the Pharisees

  217. in some corner

  218. of their minds

  219. to recognise

  220. that Jesus

  221. is describing them

  222. precisely

  223. and describing

  224. their ancestors

  225. because what were

  226. they planning to do

  227. what were they plotting

  228. to do

  229. they were planning

  230. to kill him.

  231. The glorious

  232. good news

  233. good news

  234. of restoration

  235. and joy

  236. and forgiveness

  237. and God's kingdom

  238. coming

  239. it had produced

  240. in these people

  241. what?

  242. Envity

  243. and anger

  244. and rebelliousness

  245. and hatred.

  246. And so by the end

  247. of the week

  248. they had been crucified.

  249. And down through

  250. the years

  251. the ancestors

  252. of these people

  253. had stoned

  254. and killed

  255. the prophets.

  256. They had reacted

  257. against God's servants

  258. with violence

  259. and rage.

  260. And you say

  261. what a generation

  262. are they in?

  263. How primitive

  264. these people were.

  265. How uncultured.

  266. How uncultivated.

  267. But you know

  268. it's not just true

  269. is it to say

  270. that a reaction

  271. to the Lord Jesus

  272. and the gospel

  273. and the riches

  274. of God

  275. that's offered

  276. in Jesus Christ

  277. when that's offered

  278. to people

  279. it's not true

  280. just to say

  281. that the reaction

  282. is apathy today

  283. in our world.

  284. There is

  285. isn't there

  286. really infuriatingly

  287. enormous amounts

  288. of apathy

  289. in our culture.

  290. Materialism

  291. that preoccupation

  292. with the business

  293. of our daily life

  294. has blinded people

  295. for real values.

  296. That certainly happened.

  297. Sultan Eatsen

  298. spoke about

  299. the western world

  300. that it was like

  301. a shop window

  302. where all the price tags

  303. have been changed

  304. and so the cheap things

  305. are the most expensive

  306. and the really

  307. valuable things

  308. are priced cheaply.

  309. And the estimates

  310. that our culture

  311. puts on

  312. all manner of things

  313. is crazily upside down.

  314. And so people

  315. value things

  316. which are worth

  317. nothing

  318. and that which is

  319. worth most important

  320. is not valid

  321. at all.

  322. There's an enormous

  323. amount of apathy

  324. from the dead

  325. and the blind

  326. and we must never

  327. be surprised

  328. when we find that.

  329. We find ourselves

  330. dealing with it

  331. but there's something

  332. else isn't there?

  333. When people

  334. hear about the Lord

  335. Jesus

  336. and they understand

  337. his claim

  338. on their life

  339. we see particularly

  340. in dead religion.

  341. When the invitation

  342. comes to the Lord

  343. Jesus Christ

  344. and from the Lord

  345. Jesus Christ

  346. and people

  347. understand

  348. what the message

  349. of Jesus

  350. is all about

  351. that it is about

  352. you and I

  353. being naturally

  354. spiritually dead

  355. and we need

  356. new life

  357. and we are under

  358. the wrath of God

  359. unless we accept

  360. his son.

  361. What is that?

  362. There is often

  363. anger

  364. and there is

  365. often

  366. incense

  367. outrage

  368. how dare

  369. you believe

  370. that?

  371. We find

  372. don't we

  373. that when

  374. somebody is

  375. confronted

  376. with the

  377. authentic

  378. gospel

  379. of the

  380. Lord

  381. Jesus

  382. Christ

  383. with that

  384. sobering

  385. reality

  386. of his

  387. kingly

  388. right

  389. of the

  390. living

  391. God

  392. over every

  393. single one

  394. of us

  395. it's amazing

  396. isn't it

  397. how apathy

  398. gives way

  399. to anger

  400. don't you find

  401. that?

  402. So it's not

  403. surprising

  404. we're taking

  405. to the

  406. second scene

  407. which is in

  408. verse 7

  409. and that is

  410. the indignation

  411. of the

  412. king

  413. the indignation

  414. of the

  415. king

  416. now the

  417. reason the

  418. king responded

  419. and he did

  420. the king is

  421. enraged

  422. he sent his

  423. army and

  424. destroyed those

  425. murderers and

  426. burnt their

  427. city

  428. was that they

  429. mistreated his

  430. servants of

  431. course

  432. but the reason

  433. the king reacted

  434. in the way that

  435. he did was not

  436. simply because

  437. they were

  438. ungrateful

  439. and impolite

  440. and they were

  441. rude

  442. but it was

  443. simply because

  444. they were his

  445. mutinous

  446. subjects

  447. you see

  448. these people

  449. whom the

  450. invitation went

  451. out to

  452. could not

  453. simply say

  454. I've got

  455. nothing to do

  456. with him

  457. I don't

  458. know him

  459. his invitation

  460. is irrelevant

  461. to me

  462. I've got no

  463. relationship with

  464. him and I

  465. don't want it

  466. and he's got

  467. no relationship

  468. with me

  469. and the

  470. longer that

  471. continues

  472. the better

  473. I've got no

  474. interest in

  475. God

  476. I don't

  477. do God

  478. he's got

  479. nothing to

  480. do with

  481. me and I

  482. want nothing

  483. to do with

  484. him

  485. if he does

  486. exist

  487. I'm a free

  488. man or a

  489. free woman

  490. or a free

  491. boy and a

  492. free girl

  493. and I will

  494. do whatever

  495. I want

  496. and I don't

  497. want him

  498. interfering

  499. the simple

  500. truth is

  501. that that

  502. position is

  503. just a

  504. figment of

  505. our

  506. imagination

  507. because this

  508. morning

  509. whether you like

  510. it or not

  511. you do have

  512. a relationship

  513. with him

  514. whether you

  515. want it or

  516. whether you

  517. don't

  518. you have a

  519. relationship

  520. with God

  521. because he

  522. is your

  523. rightful

  524. king

  525. in the

  526. coronation

  527. of

  528. Queen Elizabeth

  529. the second

  530. they came

  531. and they

  532. presented her

  533. to the

  534. lords and

  535. the commons

  536. in Westminster

  537. and they

  538. said I

  539. present you

  540. I present

  541. to you

  542. Elizabeth

  543. our undoubted

  544. queen

  545. and the

  546. lords rose

  547. and the

  548. commons

  549. rose

  550. and they

  551. said God

  552. save the

  553. queen

  554. and what I

  555. am saying to

  556. this morning

  557. what every

  558. faithful preacher

  559. of the gospel

  560. should be saying

  561. to you

  562. is in the

  563. name of

  564. God

  565. I present

  566. to you

  567. your undoubted

  568. king

  569. whose name

  570. is Jesus

  571. Christ

  572. the king

  573. of kings

  574. and lord

  575. of lords

  576. and you

  577. are his

  578. subject

  579. whether you

  580. want to be

  581. or not

  582. is irrelevant

  583. God has

  584. made him

  585. king of kings

  586. and lord

  587. of lords

  588. and you

  589. are his

  590. subject

  591. this morning

  592. and because

  593. these are

  594. his subjects

  595. and the

  596. king sent

  597. out his

  598. army

  599. and after

  600. repeated

  601. impetitions

  602. and repeated

  603. rebellion

  604. and repeated

  605. refusal

  606. his patience

  607. came to

  608. an end

  609. but you

  610. say to me

  611. God

  612. will never

  613. do that

  614. let me read

  615. to you a

  616. verse from

  617. Genesis 6

  618. in Genesis 6

  619. the story

  620. of Noah

  621. when God's

  622. patience ran

  623. out in the

  624. days of Noah

  625. and God

  626. said my

  627. spirit

  628. shall not

  629. strive

  630. always with

  631. man

  632. and God

  633. sent

  634. judgment

  635. and that's

  636. exactly what

  637. Jesus is

  638. telling us

  639. here

  640. there will

  641. be a day

  642. when the

  643. patience of

  644. God runs

  645. out

  646. the king's

  647. lavish

  648. hospitality

  649. they would

  650. never

  651. experience

  652. but his

  653. wrath and

  654. his judgment

  655. they did

  656. the third

  657. scene

  658. the rejection

  659. of an

  660. invitation

  661. the indignation

  662. of the

  663. king

  664. and thirdly

  665. wonderfully

  666. the redirection

  667. of the

  668. invitation

  669. look at

  670. verses 8

  671. to 10

  672. notice the

  673. point of

  674. this

  675. the wedding

  676. banquet is

  677. now ready

  678. but those

  679. who are

  680. invited

  681. do not

  682. deserve to

  683. come

  684. they refuse

  685. to come

  686. so the

  687. king says

  688. you go to

  689. the street

  690. corners

  691. and you

  692. invite to

  693. the banquet

  694. and you

  695. find anyone

  696. you can

  697. and they

  698. come back

  699. to him

  700. and they

  701. say we've

  702. done that

  703. but there's

  704. still room

  705. and they

  706. gathered

  707. together all

  708. the people

  709. they could

  710. find and

  711. the wedding

  712. hall was

  713. filled with

  714. guests

  715. the whole

  716. point is

  717. that the

  718. king's

  719. plans were

  720. changed

  721. you know

  722. when they

  723. rebelled

  724. against him

  725. and when

  726. they turned

  727. against him

  728. these people

  729. and when

  730. they murdered

  731. his servant

  732. they thought

  733. that's the

  734. end of it

  735. it's all

  736. over and

  737. done with

  738. but the

  739. king's

  740. plans

  741. have not

  742. changed

  743. he was

  744. going ahead

  745. with his

  746. purpose

  747. he was

  748. going to

  749. have a

  750. wedding

  751. banquet

  752. for his

  753. son

  754. and what

  755. changed

  756. was those

  757. who were

  758. invited

  759. and I

  760. want to

  761. say to

  762. you this

  763. morning

  764. that in

  765. seeking to

  766. set yourself

  767. against the

  768. sovereign

  769. purpose

  770. of the

  771. holy God

  772. that is

  773. described

  774. here

  775. by his

  776. son the

  777. Lord Jesus

  778. by setting

  779. yourself

  780. against him

  781. that will

  782. not change

  783. God's

  784. plans

  785. but it

  786. will

  787. lead to

  788. you breaking

  789. yourself

  790. against his

  791. sovereign

  792. will

  793. that's what

  794. it leads

  795. to

  796. exactly what

  797. happened

  798. the original

  799. invitation

  800. went out

  801. and it

  802. was rejected

  803. and then

  804. the king

  805. turned to

  806. all manner

  807. of people

  808. and the

  809. invitation

  810. was sent

  811. to the

  812. good and

  813. the bad

  814. and the

  815. ugly

  816. and it

  817. was sent

  818. to the

  819. outsiders

  820. and again

  821. do you see

  822. how the

  823. parallels

  824. be applied

  825. the king

  826. the king

  827. was

  828. God

  829. and the

  830. invited

  831. guests

  832. initially

  833. they are

  834. his people

  835. Israel

  836. whom he

  837. has called

  838. out of

  839. Egypt

  840. he says

  841. out of

  842. Egypt

  843. I have

  844. called

  845. my son

  846. that's

  847. what he

  848. said

  849. the

  850. wedding

  851. feast

  852. might

  853. well be

  854. a reference

  855. to our

  856. messianic

  857. banquet

  858. which

  859. Jewish

  860. tradition

  861. spoke of

  862. the

  863. servants

  864. the

  865. servants

  866. would

  867. have

  868. been

  869. his

  870. prophets

  871. Isaiah

  872. Jeremiah

  873. Hosea

  874. who came

  875. and came

  876. again to

  877. Israel

  878. offering the

  879. invitation

  880. and John

  881. the Baptist

  882. and now

  883. the Lord

  884. Jesus

  885. Christ

  886. but they

  887. rejected

  888. and they

  889. stoned

  890. and they

  891. killed the

  892. messengers

  893. and they

  894. were about

  895. to crucify

  896. Jesus

  897. Christ

  898. but now

  899. the new

  900. guests

  901. are invited

  902. and they

  903. are

  904. outsiders

  905. you know

  906. who they

  907. were

  908. the people

  909. like you

  910. the people

  911. like me

  912. they were

  913. Gentiles

  914. Jesus

  915. himself

  916. at the end

  917. of this

  918. gospel

  919. repeats

  920. that

  921. invitation

  922. doesn't

  923. he

  924. what we

  925. call

  926. the

  927. great

  928. commission

  929. but the

  930. gospel

  931. the message

  932. of the

  933. kingdom

  934. is to

  935. go out

  936. into

  937. all the

  938. world

  939. and we

  940. are to

  941. make

  942. disciples

  943. of all

  944. nations

  945. which

  946. includes

  947. Gentiles

  948. that's

  949. why the

  950. apostle Paul

  951. went out

  952. and said

  953. he was

  954. sent

  955. by God

  956. to the

  957. Gentiles

  958. to the

  959. world

  960. the

  961. apostle Paul

  962. is like

  963. the invitation

  964. of going

  965. out

  966. a second

  967. time

  968. to Jerusalem

  969. to Judea

  970. and Samaria

  971. and all

  972. the ends

  973. of the

  974. earth

  975. he's

  976. inact

  977. and he

  978. embraces

  979. all who

  980. will hear

  981. and come

  982. and of

  983. course

  984. that's

  985. always been

  986. God's

  987. plan

  988. it was

  989. prophesied

  990. and predicted

  991. through the

  992. Old Testament

  993. you think

  994. of Isaiah

  995. those who

  996. are not

  997. my people

  998. will be

  999. called

  1000. my people

  1001. and that's

  1002. what Jesus

  1003. is speaking

  1004. about here

  1005. he's

  1006. speaking

  1007. about us

  1008. and so

  1009. the application

  1010. of the

  1011. parable

  1012. is really

  1013. obvious

  1014. to us

  1015. so far

  1016. but there's

  1017. a fourth

  1018. scene

  1019. it's a

  1020. thing in the

  1021. tale

  1022. it's the

  1023. exclusion

  1024. of an

  1025. intruder

  1026. not an

  1027. outsider

  1028. don't think

  1029. that

  1030. for they're

  1031. all outsiders

  1032. aren't they

  1033. they all

  1034. come in

  1035. at the

  1036. second

  1037. invitation

  1038. it's not

  1039. a gate

  1040. crasher

  1041. like we

  1042. would call

  1043. them

  1044. they'd all

  1045. been invited

  1046. but he stood

  1047. out amongst

  1048. the guests

  1049. as an

  1050. intruder

  1051. he stood

  1052. out as

  1053. the only

  1054. man who

  1055. was not

  1056. wearing the

  1057. proper

  1058. dress

  1059. notice

  1060. I'm the

  1061. king

  1062. in verse

  1063. 11

  1064. he comes

  1065. in and he

  1066. looks at the

  1067. guests

  1068. and he

  1069. saw that

  1070. there was

  1071. a man

  1072. who had

  1073. no wedding

  1074. garment

  1075. no wedding

  1076. clothes

  1077. now since

  1078. all the

  1079. others

  1080. had wedding

  1081. clothes

  1082. and they'd

  1083. been rounded

  1084. up from the

  1085. streets

  1086. remember

  1087. and everywhere

  1088. they could be

  1089. found

  1090. it is quite

  1091. impossible

  1092. this man

  1093. was not

  1094. wearing the

  1095. proper wedding

  1096. outfit

  1097. it's quite

  1098. impossible that

  1099. he wasn't

  1100. wearing the

  1101. proper wedding

  1102. outfit because

  1103. he couldn't

  1104. afford it

  1105. that's what

  1106. some people

  1107. think

  1108. the

  1109. commentators

  1110. quite

  1111. extraordinarily

  1112. stupidly

  1113. suggest that

  1114. but what

  1115. had happened

  1116. obviously was

  1117. that the

  1118. king had

  1119. provided the

  1120. proper wedding

  1121. dress

  1122. these people

  1123. that came in

  1124. from all over

  1125. the place

  1126. from the

  1127. highways and

  1128. the byways

  1129. they came in

  1130. from the

  1131. streets

  1132. they had no

  1133. money

  1134. they had

  1135. nothing

  1136. and the

  1137. king provides

  1138. for them

  1139. but here

  1140. is a man

  1141. who is

  1142. unwilling

  1143. to come

  1144. to the

  1145. wedding

  1146. on the

  1147. king's

  1148. terms

  1149. that's the

  1150. point

  1151. certainly not

  1152. that he

  1153. couldn't afford

  1154. it

  1155. he came

  1156. to the

  1157. of course

  1158. he wished

  1159. to receive

  1160. the invitation

  1161. he wanted

  1162. to participate

  1163. in this

  1164. lavish reception

  1165. the riches

  1166. of the king

  1167. that he was

  1168. laying on

  1169. for them

  1170. but he was

  1171. determined

  1172. to come

  1173. on his

  1174. own

  1175. terms

  1176. I'm not

  1177. going to

  1178. wear

  1179. what the

  1180. king

  1181. has given

  1182. me

  1183. that's

  1184. what he's

  1185. saying

  1186. and arrogantly

  1187. he comes

  1188. not as the

  1189. king chose

  1190. and not as the

  1191. king chose

  1192. into

  1193. he refused

  1194. the king's

  1195. provision

  1196. there's little

  1197. doubt really

  1198. that what

  1199. Jesus is

  1200. referring to

  1201. in the

  1202. parable

  1203. is what

  1204. Isaiah

  1205. talks about

  1206. Isaiah 61

    Isaiah 61:10

  1207. verse 10

  1208. Isaiah 61

  1209. 10

  1210. let me read

  1211. it to you

  1212. it speaks

  1213. about when he

  1214. says this

  1215. he says

  1216. I will rejoice

  1217. greatly in the

  1218. Lord

  1219. Isaiah

  1220. says

  1221. my soul

  1222. will

  1223. exalt him

  1224. in my

  1225. God

  1226. because he

  1227. has clothed

  1228. me

  1229. with the

  1230. garments of

  1231. salvation

  1232. he has

  1233. wrapped me

  1234. in a robe

  1235. of righteousness

  1236. he has

  1237. clothed me

  1238. in the

  1239. garments of

  1240. salvation

  1241. he has

  1242. wrapped me

  1243. in robes

  1244. of righteousness

  1245. and that

  1246. is Isaiah

    Isaiah 61:10

  1247. 61

  1248. verse 10

  1249. and so

  1250. this man

  1251. at the

  1252. wedding feast

  1253. and the

  1254. host of the

  1255. wedding feast

  1256. he would have

  1257. offered to him

  1258. garments of

  1259. salvation

  1260. he's provided

  1261. for him

  1262. the robe

  1263. of righteousness

  1264. they need

  1265. the garments

  1266. of salvation

  1267. they cannot

  1268. choose

  1269. how they

  1270. will appear

  1271. before the

  1272. king

  1273. they have

  1274. to take

  1275. what the

  1276. king has

  1277. given

  1278. and be

  1279. wrapped in

  1280. his righteousness

  1281. and clothed

  1282. with the

  1283. garments of

  1284. salvation

  1285. you see

  1286. it's not

  1287. just a matter

  1288. of receiving

  1289. and healing

  1290. and accepting

  1291. an invitation

  1292. from God

  1293. you can only

  1294. come to

  1295. God

  1296. on God's

  1297. terms

  1298. and being

  1299. clothed

  1300. not with

  1301. a marriage

  1302. of your

  1303. own

  1304. and a

  1305. righteousness

  1306. of your

  1307. own

  1308. but only

  1309. in the

  1310. righteousness

  1311. that he

  1312. offers to

  1313. you

  1314. now what

  1315. about your

  1316. response to

  1317. God's

  1318. invitation

  1319. this morning

  1320. what about

  1321. it

  1322. there's a

  1323. personal

  1324. element

  1325. isn't it

  1326. to Jesus

  1327. teaching

  1328. which is

  1329. inescapable

  1330. don't turn

  1331. away at

  1332. this point

  1333. and say

  1334. to yourself

  1335. well I

  1336. know exactly

  1337. where

  1338. he's going

  1339. he's going

  1340. to talk

  1341. about

  1342. he's going

  1343. to appeal

  1344. to those

  1345. who've

  1346. never

  1347. received

  1348. Christ

  1349. that they

  1350. might have

  1351. the right

  1352. attitude

  1353. I want us

  1354. to think

  1355. more

  1356. than that

  1357. how do

  1358. you respond

  1359. to the

  1360. word of

  1361. God

  1362. and the

  1363. invitations

  1364. of God

  1365. in Jesus

  1366. Christ

  1367. this morning

  1368. so what

  1369. about the

  1370. apathy

  1371. what about

  1372. the

  1373. preoccupation

  1374. with the

  1375. business

  1376. of daily

  1377. living

  1378. the

  1379. preoccupation

  1380. with the

  1381. business

  1382. of daily

  1383. living

  1384. that shuts

  1385. out the

  1386. living God

  1387. and eternal

  1388. matters

  1389. out of your

  1390. life and

  1391. consciousness

  1392. by and large

  1393. for large

  1394. chances of

  1395. the week

  1396. we talk

  1397. about

  1398. apathy

  1399. in the

  1400. world

  1401. but God

  1402. knows how

  1403. much we

  1404. should be

  1405. concerned

  1406. about apathy

  1407. in the

  1408. church

  1409. apathy

  1410. towards

  1411. God

  1412. amongst

  1413. his

  1414. people

  1415. and what

  1416. about anger

  1417. against God

  1418. hostility

  1419. to his

  1420. demands

  1421. refusal

  1422. to bow

  1423. before his

  1424. rightful

  1425. place

  1426. in our

  1427. life

  1428. refusal

  1429. of his

  1430. rights

  1431. we're

  1432. really into

  1433. our rights

  1434. aren't we

  1435. we're

  1436. obsessed

  1437. with our

  1438. rights

  1439. but what

  1440. about God's

  1441. rights

  1442. in your

  1443. life this

  1444. morning

  1445. you should

  1446. like

  1447. study

  1448. Matthew

  1449. 22

  1450. what I've

  1451. noticed

  1452. is that

  1453. I am

  1454. far

  1455. nearer

  1456. than I

  1457. imagine

  1458. to the

  1459. people

  1460. that I

  1461. read about

  1462. in this

  1494. pray that

  1495. in his

  1496. mercy

  1497. he will

  1498. help us

  1499. not to
