  1. Now, I imagine that there are not many occasions that preachers ask congregations to turn to Matthew 23.

  2. ! And that's partly because as it was read, I don't know whether you picked it up, it is a blistering passage.

  3. It is one of those times in the Gospels where Jesus speaks in an extraordinarily fiery way.

  4. And there are words at which you and I can't hide from them this morning.

  5. And we don't come to Matthew 23 with a sense of eagerness.

  6. Oh, I love this passage. This is one that really warms the heart.

  7. Because these words burn and they scorch.

  8. And as we saw last week at the start of chapter 23, they're particularly aimed at religious leaders.

  9. Religious leaders.

  10. And you'll notice how in verse 27, Jesus describes that religion.

  11. Can you just look down there with me?

  12. What's their religion like?

  13. He says, your religion is like a tomb full of dead men's bones.

  14. But dead religion is a perennial problem and it's always a problem.

  15. It's got a long history throughout the whole history of the Christian church.

  16. And dead religion reappears in different forms.

  17. And so if I say dead religion, what do you think of?

  18. You probably think of, going to a church like this, a high degree of ceremonial.

  19. A really detailed liturgical correctness.

  20. Maybe you think of those words, liberal theology.

  21. Ethically careless.

  22. But the Pharisees remind us that it is possible to be full of zeal.

  23. Full of enthusiasm.

  24. To be a stickler for moral correctness.

  25. To be an orthodox believer.

  26. And yet still to represent dead religion.

  27. Because dead religion is not a matter of the clothing that it wears.

  28. So it may well be high and ceremonial.

  29. It may be smells of bells.

  30. It may be very trendy.

  31. It might be real.

  32. It may be emotionally supercharged.

  33. It may be lively.

  34. It may be right-wing.

  35. It might be left-wing.

  36. It might be evangelical and orthodox.

  37. But actually, if it's a dead body, it doesn't matter what it's dressed up on.

  38. I think it's it.

  39. Because if it's a dead body, no matter whether it's in a tracksuit or whether it's in a three-piece suit,

  40. it's still a court.

  41. Heretical or orthodox.

  42. And dead religion may have many forms.

  43. It may have a form of godliness.

  44. But the New Testament tells us that it denies the power of that godliness.

  45. Dead religion may defend the deity of Jesus Christ.

  46. Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

  47. But it never displays the glory and the beauty and the attractiveness of Jesus Christ.

  48. Dead religion may speak the loaves of the Holy Spirit.

  49. But it never displays the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

  50. And in this chapter, which as I've said is a burning and blistering chapter,

  51. Jesus rails against the Pharisees.

  52. He treats dead religion with great seriousness.

  53. He exposes it openly.

  54. And you can't ignore it.

  55. His language is that of a funeral lament.

  56. Do you notice that word that came up sometimes?

  57. Woe.

  58. Woe to you.

  59. And they kind of introduce what Jesus is saying.

  60. It's a word that expresses a kind of mourning for the dead.

  61. One scholar has said there's a mix of compassion and condemnation as Jesus says it.

  62. And here it is probably Jesus pronouncing impending judgment.

  63. Judgment is coming woe on you.

  64. And the word occurs seven times.

  65. But there are five, I think, identifiable emphasis that Jesus makes.

  66. Where Jesus focuses on areas where dead religion shows itself.

  67. That I think is helpful for us.

  68. So let me touch on them.

  69. First of all, in verse 13.

  70. It focuses on the influence of this dead religion on the lives of others.

  71. Dead religion on the lives of others.

  72. In verse 13.

  73. Jesus is speaking about first of all.

  74. What is the influence of dead religion on the lives of others?

  75. That spiritual influence.

  76. That spiritual impact upon the lives of other people.

  77. These Pharisees, they are representatives of this dead religion.

  78. What is the effect that it has on other people?

  79. And so what he's saying here is that they are a hindrance, not a help.

  80. He's saying that these people, they are very, very eager.

  81. They're very religious.

  82. And yet they have no spiritual experience themselves.

  83. Because they never truly entered the kingdom of heaven.

  84. And you notice how he says it.

  85. You've never entered the kingdom yourselves.

  86. And you get in the way of those who want to get in.

  87. And it couldn't be more serious.

  88. So let's look.

  89. Let's see how they've done it.

  90. Let's go to Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  91. And we've been there, remember?

  92. Matthew chapter 12.

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  93. And look at verse 22.

  94. And you notice you get this great illustration of what Jesus is talking about.

  95. And it's these very Pharisees who stand in the doorway and they block people from entering in.

  96. So Matthew 22.

  97. And verse 12.

  98. No.

  99. Matthew 22.

  100. That is right, isn't it?

  101. Yeah.

  102. And I'm looking at Matthew chapter 23.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  103. So that's not very helpful, is it?

  104. But it's Matthew chapter 22.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  105. And verse 12.

  106. Is that right?

  107. I've got two different verses written down here.

  108. That's very helpful, isn't it?

  109. Here we go.

  110. It's 22.

  111. That's right the first time.

  112. Matthew 12, 22.

  113. You all there?

  114. Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and made to us brought him and Jesus healed him.

  115. So the man spoke and saw.

  116. All the people were amazed and said, can this be the son of David?

  117. But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, it is only by Beelzebul.

  118. It's only by the devil.

  119. The prince of demons.

  120. That this man casts out demons.

  121. Do you notice something that has awakened these people?

  122. They're pressing towards Christ.

  123. They're asking, is this the Messiah?

  124. Should we not be going to him?

  125. Isn't this the man we've been expecting?

  126. And notice what happens.

  127. They say, no, he's done it by the devil.

  128. In other words, they stand in the door and they say, no, you will not come to Christ.

  129. These people are beginning to wonder and ask, could this be the Messiah in front of them, as it were?

  130. And the Pharisees slam the door in their face.

  131. Because dead religion has a terrible influence on those who are genuinely seeking Christ.

  132. Here's the second thing.

  133. The second thing is, it focuses on the effect of these people's witness.

  134. Just look at verse 15 of Matthew chapter 23.

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  135. Matthew chapter 15.

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  136. Look at what it says.

  137. It says, and woe to you.

  138. Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites.

  139. Because you travel across sea and land to make a single proserite.

  140. And when he becomes a proserite, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourself.

  141. It's incredible, isn't it?

  142. It's so strong.

  143. And you have to tend to ask, what on earth can these people who've got dead religion, what can they witness to?

  144. What can they speak about?

  145. Surely, these dead religion people, they have got no evangelistic zeal.

  146. But they do.

  147. And these people are so eager to recruit, they travel over land and sea for a single convict.

  148. But of course, what do they want to win them to?

  149. What they want to win them to is a dead religion like their own.

  150. They do not make them Christians, followers of the Lord Jesus.

  151. They make them Pharisees.

  152. And what often happens is that when people are won over to something, they become even more zealous, don't they?

  153. None so zealous as a convert.

  154. And when these people are won over to the Pharisees, they become more pharisaical than the Pharisees themselves.

  155. You make them twice as much a son of hell, Jesus says.

  156. And so here's a lesson, and we can't avoid it.

  157. That if today you are a half-hearted Christian,

  158. if you're a Christian who lives with one foot in the world,

  159. with one foot in the kingdom of God, as it were,

  160. what you bear witness to is compromised Christianity.

  161. If you've got reservations of the authority of the Bible,

  162. and your influence is brought to bear on other people who are seeking to know God,

  163. what you will do is you will make people like yourself.

  164. We really hate to talk about this.

  165. But it's so true, isn't it?

  166. It's a law written into nature.

  167. The Bible teaches about it,

  168. right from the very start of the Bible,

  169. in the book of Genesis.

  170. It's carried right the way through.

  171. You might not have spotted it.

  172. There's a law written into nature,

  173. and it's this.

  174. It's called the bringing forth law.

  175. Do you know that law?

  176. So you go to Genesis 1 and 2,

  177. and you'll see that written into creation,

  178. is this.

  179. They brought forth everyone after its kind.

  180. That's how it reads.

  181. And if you go through Genesis 1 and 2,

  182. do it this afternoon.

  183. Look at it.

  184. It reads again and again.

  185. They brought forth after their kind.

  186. So you see it in nature.

  187. Humans bring forth...

  188. Humans.

  189. Animals bring forth...

  190. Animals.

  191. Apple trees bring forth...

  192. Apple trees.

  193. It's one of the great illustrations Jesus uses,

  194. doesn't he?

  195. He says,

  196. when does a man...

  197. When he says,

  198. does a man gather figs from...

  199. grapes?

  200. Of course he doesn't.

  201. You don't go to a grape tree...

  202. and get figs, do you?

  203. You don't go to your apple tree

  204. and pick off a pear.

  205. You've got to your apple tree,

  206. you get an apple.

  207. And Jesus is saying,

  208. everyone brings forth after its kind.

  209. And that's really,

  210. really important.

  211. And if we wanted to,

  212. we could go over the recent history

  213. of this country,

  214. and we could see,

  215. what does dead religion bring forth?

  216. It brings forth dead religion.

  217. Dead religion produces specimen of itself.

  218. Half-hearted Christianity produces what?

  219. Half-hearted Christianity.

  220. And the principle applies in all sorts of ways.

  221. The third area that Jesus concentrates on

  222. is the result of their teaching,

  223. the influence of their lives,

  224. the effect of their witness,

  225. and the third area that Jesus

  226. is the result of their teaching.

  227. So that's in verses 16 to 22.

  228. Can you see it?

  229. The paragraph begins,

  230. woe to you blind guides.

  231. It's first of five times in the chapter

  232. that Jesus speaks about the Pharisees being blind.

  233. And the serious thing about what Jesus is talking about

  234. is not their blindness itself.

  235. The serious issue is

  236. that these people

  237. are religious guides for other people.

  238. You can imagine it, can't you?

  239. You want someone to guide you somewhere,

  240. and yet they're blind.

  241. They're unable to see.

  242. It's so dangerous, isn't it?

  243. It's like getting into the car

  244. and somebody was blind and saying,

  245. could you direct me the way to your house?

  246. There's no people that tell you, eh?

  247. It's exactly Jesus' point.

  248. In verses 13 and again in 15,

  249. they're described not as Pharisees there,

  250. but as teachers of the law.

  251. Woe to you, verse 13, teachers of the law.

  252. 15, woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees.

  253. And Jesus identifies a mark

  254. in verses 16 to 22 of dead religion.

  255. And it's simply this.

  256. It avoids the implications of the truth.

  257. The implications of the truth.

  258. And more than once,

  259. you've come across it.

  260. The Pharisees played a game.

  261. And it was a dreadful and disastrous game.

  262. It was a game with words.

  263. You can see it in our passage.

  264. Where they would enter into an oath,

  265. kind of serious pledge, a promise.

  266. And they would say, I swear.

  267. And you find out what we can swear by.

  268. So that what we swear by,

  269. we're not held to.

  270. So they worked out a whole lot of things.

  271. And they said, we swear by the temple.

  272. But if we swear by the temple,

  273. it doesn't bind us.

  274. To keep true and keep faith.

  275. With what we promised.

  276. We don't have to keep it.

  277. But if on the other hand,

  278. we swear by the gold on the temple,

  279. well that does bind us.

  280. And you think to yourself,

  281. as I said this week,

  282. this is madness.

  283. It's ludicrous.

  284. We laugh at it, don't we?

  285. How ridiculous this is.

  286. It's in verse 18.

  287. They say, if anyone swears by the altar,

  288. he is nothing.

  289. But if anyone swears by the gift

  290. that is on the altar,

  291. he is bound by his oath.

  292. And she says, you blind men.

  293. Because the whole point of it

  294. was to avoid the implications

  295. of the truth and truth-telling.

  296. And they used to teach this.

  297. And we said, how ridiculous.

  298. But then let me ask you,

  299. are there plain teachings of the Bible?

  300. And the implications of which

  301. you are determinedly avoiding

  302. in your life?

  303. Are there plain truths in the Bible?

  304. The implications of which

  305. you are declining to take seriously?

  306. And by your word,

  307. and by your example,

  308. you teach other people the same.

  309. Because a mark of dead religion

  310. is that it seeks to avoid

  311. the implications of the truth.

  312. And that is, isn't it,

  313. enormously solemn?

  314. Because the blind guy who does that,

  315. Jesus elsewhere says,

  316. he will land in a ditch

  317. along with those who he leads.

  318. And it would be worthwhile,

  319. I think, spending a little time

  320. on this this week.

  321. Because this is not some exercise

  322. that we're following

  323. that ends when we go through

  324. those doors.

  325. It would be worth our while

  326. this week pausing

  327. and saying to ourselves,

  328. before God,

  329. are there implications

  330. of the teaching of the Bible

  331. which I'm deliberately avoiding?

  332. And I'm avoiding them

  333. not because the Bible

  334. doesn't teach them,

  335. but because of cultural pressure.

  336. Or because I just

  337. don't want to obey them.

  338. It's a mark of dead religion.

  339. Here's the fourth thing.

  340. It's the focus of their interests.

  341. Look at verses 23 to 28.

  342. And you notice there's two things

  343. that mark their religious hypocrisy.

  344. Number one,

  345. they major on minors.

  346. They major on minors.

  347. Or to put it another way,

  348. they magnify,

  349. they magnify the insignificant

  350. and they minimize the essential.

  351. Do you notice that in verse 23?

  352. Wote you scribes and Pharisees,

  353. hypocrites,

  354. for you tithe mint

  355. and dill

  356. and cumin.

  357. And yet you've neglected

  358. the weightier matters

  359. of the law.

  360. Justice,

  361. mercy

  362. and faithfulness.

  363. You know about

  364. I'm tithing

  365. in the Old Testament

  366. where you give a tenth

  367. of what you have.

  368. And I've been willing

  369. to tithe

  370. all their possessions

  371. as part of their obligation.

  372. And she says to them,

  373. how

  374. how much

  375. do spices

  376. take up of your life?

  377. How much

  378. part of your life

  379. do spices

  380. occupy?

  381. What part of your wealth

  382. consists of spices?

  383. Unless you're really unusual.

  384. Spices don't play

  385. a major part in my life

  386. and even yours.

  387. But they were meticulous,

  388. these guys.

  389. They were meticulous

  390. about mint

  391. and dill

  392. and cumin.

  393. She says,

  394. but you've neglected

  395. the weightier matters

  396. of the law.

  397. Justice,

  398. mercy,

  399. faithfulness.

  400. And you should have

  401. practiced the latter

  402. without neglecting

  403. the former.

  404. You blind guides.

  405. You strain on a gnat.

  406. A little gnat.

  407. But you swallow

  408. a massive camel.

  409. And again,

  410. it's Jesus'

  411. ridiculous illustration,

  412. isn't it?

  413. And it tells you

  414. that Jesus has a sense

  415. of the ridiculous

  416. in his teaching.

  417. You strain up a gnat,

  418. which is a tiny insect.

  419. You swallow a camel.

  420. You incline to major

  421. on minors

  422. to magnify the insignificant

  423. and minimize the essential.

  424. It's a mark of dead religion.

  425. But you notice

  426. what Jesus

  427. speaks about.

  428. And we come to practicality.

  429. Here we come to the bread and butter.

  430. Verses 25 to 28.

  431. They emphasize the external

  432. but they're careless

  433. about the hidden

  434. world of the heart.

  435. Woe to you,

  436. teachers of the law,

  437. verse 25,

  438. for you clean the outside

  439. of the cup

  440. and the plate,

  441. but inside

  442. they're full of greed

  443. and self-indulgence.

  444. You blind Pharisee,

  445. first clean the inside

  446. of the cup

  447. and the plate

  448. and then the outside

  449. also may be clean.

  450. Jesus uses this word

  451. so often,

  452. doesn't he?

  453. Hypocrite.

  454. So many times.

  455. Hypocrite is just an actor

  456. who played a part.

  457. That's what it meant

  458. in Jesus' day.

  459. It was somebody

  460. who pretended

  461. to be somebody

  462. who he was not.

  463. Nobody was expecting

  464. him to be the person

  465. he was pretending to be.

  466. You go and see a play

  467. and you go round

  468. the back of the stage

  469. afterwards

  470. and speak to the actor,

  471. you don't expect him

  472. to still be playing

  473. the role he was playing

  474. on stage to you.

  475. That would be ridiculous.

  476. You know very well

  477. it's not Hamlet

  478. who you've gone to see.

  479. It's Joe Glott.

  480. But he was pretending

  481. to be someone

  482. wasn't he on stage

  483. and the better

  484. his performance was

  485. the better hypocrite he was.

  486. That's the sense.

  487. And it's a mark

  488. of your dead religion

  489. when your outward image

  490. is something different

  491. from what's underneath.

  492. And God knows

  493. how much I need

  494. to apply this

  495. to my soul.

  496. When your outward image

  497. bears no relation

  498. to your inward states

  499. then you're spiritually dead.

  500. That's what Jesus is saying.

  501. Ten religion

  502. has one more thing.

  503. So we've seen

  504. the influence

  505. of their lives,

  506. the effect of their witness,

  507. the result of their teaching,

  508. the focus of their interest

  509. and lastly

  510. the illusion

  511. of their self-assessment.

  512. Let me verse 29 to 36.

  513. He says

  514. woe to you teachers

  515. of the law.

  516. You say

  517. if we lived

  518. in the days

  519. of our fathers

  520. we would not have

  521. taken part with them

  522. and shed in the blood

  523. of the prophets.

  524. They look at the tombs

  525. of the old prophets

  526. of the past

  527. the godly men

  528. of the past

  529. in the Old Testament

  530. whom God has sent

  531. and they say

  532. this is dreadful.

  533. If we'd lived

  534. in their time

  535. we would have never done

  536. what people did

  537. then.

  538. And they were

  539. pretending themselves.

  540. They were so

  541. self-deluded

  542. weren't they?

  543. Because we know

  544. through reading

  545. Matthew's Gospel

  546. that actually

  547. at this point

  548. they were plotting

  549. and planning

  550. the death

  551. of the one

  552. who was the

  553. greatest prophet

  554. of all.

  555. They were self-deluded.

  556. And do you remember

  557. what we saw last week

  558. that really important

  559. point that hypocrisy

  560. it begins by deceiving

  561. others

  562. but it ends

  563. with us deceiving

  564. ourselves.

  565. And here is

  566. an example of it.

  567. They deluded

  568. themselves.

  569. And dead religion

  570. hypocrisy produces

  571. not just blindness

  572. in other spheres

  573. but it produces

  574. blindness in how

  575. we view ourselves.

  576. And Jesus points

  577. that out

  578. doesn't he

  579. in verse 34

  580. he says

  581. therefore I send

  582. you prophets

  583. and wise men

  584. as scribes

  585. some of whom

  586. you will kill

  587. and crucify

  588. some of which

  589. you will flog

  590. in your synagogues

  591. and pierce

  592. from town to town.

  593. And you read

  594. the book of Acts

  595. and you see

  596. that's exactly

  597. what happened.

  598. What were they doing?

  599. They were doing

  600. exactly what

  601. their forefathers

  602. were doing

  603. which was a mark

  604. of dead religion

  605. in most generations.

  606. It's very simple

  607. isn't it?

  608. You can tell me

  609. they're trying

  610. to silence God.

  611. That's what

  612. they were doing.

  613. And so there

  614. is dead religion

  615. so how will

  616. Jesus respond

  617. to it?

  618. By flaying

  619. them with words?

  620. Well

  621. not really

  622. ultimately.

  623. There's that

  624. word woe

  625. isn't there?

  626. A sense of

  627. infinite sadness

  628. but it's

  629. crystallised

  630. in verse 37

  631. look at Jesus

  632. response

  633. in verse 37.

  634. He says

  635. O Jerusalem

  636. Jerusalem

  637. the city

  638. that has killed

  639. the prophets

  640. and stoned

  641. those who sent

  642. to it.

  643. And here it is

  644. he says

  645. how often

  646. will I have

  647. gathered your

  648. children together

  649. as a hen

  650. gathers her brood

  651. under her wings

  652. but you

  653. were not willing.

  654. That's all

  655. for the first time

  656. this week.

  657. The repetition

  658. there.

  659. Can you see it?

  660. Verse 37.

  661. O Jerusalem

  662. Jerusalem

  663. And you've

  664. heard that

  665. repetition

  666. before haven't

  667. you?

  668. I've

  669. heard it

  670. in some

  671. of your

  672. homes

  673. and at

  674. your

  675. families

  676. in times

  677. of heartbreak

  678. and you

  679. could see

  680. some family

  681. and something

  682. has happened

  683. and they

  684. say don't

  685. they

  686. O

  687. whatever

  688. the name

  689. is

  690. O

  691. whatever

  692. the name

  693. is

  694. and they

  695. repeat the

  696. name

  697. and they

  698. say what

  699. have you

  700. done?

  701. Jesus used

  702. that again

  703. and again

  704. to me

  705. he said

  706. O

  707. Martha

  708. Martha

  709. he said

  710. O

  711. Simon

  712. Simon

  713. and the

  714. risen

  715. glorified

  716. Christ

  717. says

  718. O

  719. Saul

  720. Saul

  721. and maybe

  722. this morning

  723. in verse 37

  724. you need to put

  725. your own name

  726. in there

  727. and maybe

  728. you need to put

  729. your name

  730. in there

  731. and Jesus

  732. says how

  733. often

  734. would I

  735. have gathered

  736. you

  737. but you

  738. were not

  739. willing

  740. and so

  741. by God's

  742. grace

  743. and the

  744. Lord Jesus

  745. outstretched

  746. arms

  747. that great

  748. cry of his

  749. soul

  750. intends that

  751. this morning

  752. you should lay

  753. aside all your

  754. unwillingness

  755. and all your

  756. stubbornness

  757. and all your

  758. hypocrisy

  759. and let him

  760. gather you

  761. under the

  762. shadow of his

  763. wings

  764. and find

  765. reality

  766. not deadness

  767. there

  768. let's pray

  769. a
