  1. Good morning. I want to assure you this is as excruciating for you as it is for me.

  2. ! We're going to look at Matthew 25, but before we do that let's bow our heads in prayer. Let's pray.

  3. Heavenly Father, we thank you that you are there and you are not silent.

  4. And we praise you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that you are the God who has created us,

  5. you are the God who has sustained us and the God who has blessed us in so many ways.

  6. And we thank you that you've given us your word this morning, that it's living and active,

  7. that it's sharper than a two-edged sword. And we pray that the words of my mouth and the

  8. meditations of all our heart will be pleasing in your sight. Forgive our many sins, we pray.

  9. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. So I want us to look at Matthew 25. I heard a story recently of a couple that moved into a new home

  11. and a bunch of flowers was delivered to them. And on the wreath of flowers was a card saying,

  12. RIP. The couple obviously rang the florist to complain and the florist said,

  13. we're very sorry for what has happened. There must have been some sort of mix-up, but look on the bright side.

  14. Somewhere there's a funeral going on with a large, bright bunch of flowers saying,

  15. with a card saying, welcome to your new location.

  16. And my aim this morning in this passage is that we get our location right.

  17. And that at times like this, we understand where we're going and how secure the future is.

  18. In these chapters, and we've seen them all the way through Matthew,

  19. Jesus is preparing himself to die and to rise.

  20. And he's preparing his followers for when he is gone and how they need to be patient and faithful and focused.

  21. And that one day they will see him.

  22. There's absolute certain reality that everyone is going to meet Jesus.

  23. Either he'll come to us quickly or we will go to him eventually.

  24. And if you know Jesus at all from the New Testament,

  25. we will know that Jesus will do everything possible to make that meeting with him safe and wonderful.

  26. And that's why he does the most vital thing of all,

  27. to die on the cross,

  28. to deal with what would disqualify us,

  29. which is our sins.

  30. And that's why he says the absolutely vital things that we need to know so that we will be ready.

  31. And the story we read from Matthew 25 is basically about telling bridesmaids.

  32. The stories of Jesus are very powerful.

  33. They're stories that Jesus told not just to make things simple.

  34. He's not treating his listeners as little children.

  35. Jesus told stories with a purpose,

  36. with a purpose of separating.

  37. So some people listen eagerly to Jesus' story.

  38. They latch on.

  39. And some people are eager to get away from Jesus.

  40. They are confused by Jesus' stories.

  41. And that's the way these stories work.

  42. Jesus is walking to Jerusalem.

  43. And he begins to say a lot about what his return will be like.

  44. And the first thing he tells us,

  45. we've seen it already,

  46. is it will be global.

  47. Jesus' return is not going to be local.

  48. He's not going to just appear in Pitts Angle Park or Drayton Green.

  49. Everyone will see him at the same time.

  50. It will be universal.

  51. And then he tells us his return will be sudden.

  52. Thousands and millions of people are just going to be living normal lives,

  53. filling up with petrol,

  54. going to work,

  55. or at the moment staying in,

  56. looking at their screen,

  57. wishing they were outside.

  58. And suddenly everything changes.

  59. And he also tells us that his day will be a day of reward

  60. and a day of recompense.

  61. For those who've responded to him,

  62. have we received him?

  63. Have we done what he's asked of us?

  64. Have we done what he's told us to do?

  65. So it will be a day of reward.

  66. And he tells us in Matthew 24,

  67. the faithful will be richly rewarded

  68. and those who are unfaithful will be dealt with severely.

  69. So we come to chapter 25.

  70. And the parables are not saying all the same thing.

  71. There are nuances.

  72. It's like a diamond looking at it from different facets.

  73. And so this morning,

  74. this first part from verses 1 to 11,

  75. are asking,

  76. are we ready?

  77. And will we be steady?

  78. Are we okay with a long delay?

  79. Or will we lose interest?

  80. Are you losing interest?

  81. Will we lose interest and drift away?

  82. And we know, don't we,

  83. that thousands and thousands of people began

  84. to live as Christians and then have given up.

  85. And the question that this parable is asking

  86. is can you believe and can you stay believing?

  87. So three headings.

  88. First of all,

  89. the gift of being ready to meet with Jesus.

  90. That's a wonderful gift.

  91. The second is the gift of being steady

  92. to the end.

  93. And then the third is the gift of being able

  94. to go into God's presence.

  95. So first, in verses 1 to 4,

  96. the gift of being ready to meet with Jesus.

  97. That's the main point of the whole story.

  98. Ten bridesmaids,

  99. they're meant to go and escort the bridegroom

  100. into the wedding feast.

  101. And they want to do that.

  102. The bridegroom in the story itself is Jesus.

  103. And that's very interesting

  104. that Jesus calls himself the bridegroom

  105. because in the Old Testament,

  106. the bridegroom was always God.

  107. God, the bridegroom.

  108. His people, the bride.

  109. But now Jesus steps up

  110. and Jesus is saying,

  111. no, I am the bridegroom.

  112. It's a very clear claim to deity.

  113. And the bridesmaids are basically people like us.

  114. Are we going to be ready with joy

  115. or not ready?

  116. Five of them in the story

  117. are able to meet the bridegroom

  118. and enter the feast.

  119. Five of them miss out completely.

  120. And the difference between the five

  121. and the five

  122. is not that five are rich

  123. and five are poor.

  124. It's not that five are good

  125. and five are bad.

  126. It's not that five have been baptized

  127. and five are not.

  128. Five are religious

  129. or five are non-religious.

  130. It's none of that at all.

  131. The difference is in verse 3 and 4.

  132. Can you see it?

  133. It's did they take something.

  134. And the something in the story is oil.

  135. So what is the oil?

  136. And the long and the short of it is this.

  137. The oil is to take Christ,

  138. to receive Christ.

  139. Or maybe the grace of Christ.

  140. Or maybe the forgiveness of Christ.

  141. Or the salvation of Christ.

  142. Or the eternal life.

  143. But it is responding to Jesus.

  144. That is what the oil is.

  145. Taking Christ

  146. is the key to the future.

  147. If you want to be ready

  148. to meet with Jesus,

  149. don't try and do something impressive.

  150. It's not about what you do

  151. or what you don't do.

  152. It's about whether you've received

  153. Jesus himself.

  154. Christianity 101.

  155. Step one

  156. is to take Christ.

  157. The one who has died

  158. and the one who has risen.

  159. And those wise bridesmaids,

  160. they took oil.

  161. They all had lamps.

  162. They all looked pretty much the same.

  163. But some had taken oil.

  164. And some were ready

  165. to meet Christ.

  166. And so the truth is,

  167. anyone who receives Christ here

  168. is ready to meet Christ there.

  169. Or to put it in one sentence

  170. from another part of the New Testament,

  171. Christ in you,

  172. the hope of glory.

  173. That's the first thing

  174. of being ready

  175. to meet with Christ.

  176. The second thing

  177. is in verses 5 to 7,

  178. and it's the gift

  179. of being steady

  180. to the end.

  181. And I suspect

  182. you're sitting there thinking

  183. how much longer

  184. is this going to go on.

  185. But it's pretty simple stuff

  186. this morning, isn't it?

  187. Jesus is coming.

  188. Get salvation.

  189. I receive Christ.

  190. You may be thinking,

  191. tell me something I don't know.

  192. And so what is verse 5 all about?

  193. What does it say there?

  194. It says, isn't it,

  195. there is a long delay

  196. in the bridegroom coming.

  197. And the bridesmaids,

  198. all of them,

  199. the wise and the foolish,

  200. they get drowsy

  201. and they all fall asleep.

  202. And what is all that about?

  203. Is it okay for them

  204. to fall asleep?

  205. Is it irresponsible

  206. that they fell asleep?

  207. Is there criticism

  208. in this story

  209. of them

  210. for falling asleep?

  211. And I don't think there is.

  212. Does it endanger anybody

  213. that they fall asleep?

  214. So why does Jesus

  215. include this idea

  216. in the story

  217. that they fell asleep?

  218. And I wonder

  219. whether the parable

  220. is actually saying

  221. something more to us

  222. than just be ready

  223. for the second coming.

  224. Because all of the parables,

  225. I've got extra little bits,

  226. remember that diamond?

  227. And I wonder whether

  228. in this passage

  229. what we're seeing

  230. is loaded words.

  231. Stay with me

  232. as I try to explain that.

  233. And what I'm talking about

  234. in verses 5 and 6,

  235. I wonder whether

  236. the word sleep

  237. is loaded.

  238. I wonder whether

  239. the word sleep

  240. is a loaded word

  241. for death.

  242. All of them died.

  243. And we know that Jesus

  244. used the word sleep

  245. for death

  246. again and again

  247. in his teaching.

  248. As he talks about

  249. a little girl,

  250. do you remember?

  251. And Jesus says,

  252. she has fallen asleep.

  253. And they laugh at him

  254. and they say,

  255. no,

  256. she's died.

  257. But Jesus says,

  258. no, she's asleep.

  259. And he tells her,

  260. tell her,

  261. the coom little girl,

  262. get up.

  263. And she gets up.

  264. In the New Testament,

  265. Paul uses the word

  266. sleep for death.

  267. And I wonder actually

  268. whether the word midnight

  269. is a loaded word.

  270. Jesus speaks of the owner

  271. returning at midnight,

  272. a critical moment,

  273. the moment of return,

  274. the moment of the end.

  275. And I wonder if the word

  276. in verse 6,

  277. that word of cry

  278. or shout aloud,

  279. that is a loaded word.

  280. Because Paul says,

  281. doesn't he,

  282. in one of his letters,

  283. that when Jesus returns,

  284. he will give a loud cry

  285. or shout.

  286. And it may be that

  287. this parable is not just

  288. asking you and I

  289. the question,

  290. are you ready

  291. to meet Jesus?

  292. Because so many of you

  293. lot who are listening

  294. will say to me,

  295. yes.

  296. But I wonder whether

  297. the parable is asking,

  298. will you go to the end?

  299. Are you ready

  300. to meet Jesus

  301. and will you be steady

  302. to meet Jesus?

  303. Because that's a very

  304. different question,

  305. isn't it?

  306. Can you stay

  307. right to the end,

  308. right up until

  309. you fall asleep?

  310. Right up until

  311. you breathe your last?

  312. Can you stay

  313. a follower

  314. so that when

  315. midnight comes,

  316. when history is over

  317. and the great shout

  318. goes out

  319. and he returns,

  320. you've kept the faith,

  321. you've run the race.

  322. And you're ready

  323. and you're steady.

  324. And I think that's

  325. a great question.

  326. It's a really

  327. wonderful thing,

  328. isn't it,

  329. that Jesus can make

  330. a person ready

  331. to meet him.

  332. Just think of this,

  333. you and I

  334. will meet the person

  335. who governs

  336. the universe.

  337. Whatever your projects,

  338. whatever your successes,

  339. whatever your failures,

  340. whatever your buildings,

  341. whatever your grades,

  342. whatever your medals,

  343. they're going to look

  344. very small,

  345. aren't they?

  346. When you come face

  347. to face with the

  348. God-man who made

  349. the universe.

  350. And he is holy

  351. and in his presence

  352. sin cannot stand.

  353. And you will be

  354. in front of him.

  355. And yet he has

  356. made it possible

  357. for you and I

  358. to stand before him

  359. forgiven,

  360. spotless,

  361. joyful,

  362. loved,

  363. accepted.

  364. And that is amazing

  365. that he has

  366. made it possible

  367. for you and I

  368. to stand before him.

  369. And he is able

  370. to make us steady

  371. right at the end.

  372. Even though

  373. we are very weak

  374. and we're very worldly.

  375. But the life

  376. that he gives

  377. to people

  378. is life eternal.

  379. and the world

  380. that he begins

  381. in us,

  382. the work that he

  383. begins in us,

  384. he is going to finish.

  385. And the rough

  386. material that he

  387. is going to work

  388. with ends up

  389. perfect and sinless.

  390. Now I know you

  391. reasonably well.

  392. And some of you

  393. are very rough

  394. material indeed.

  395. And the fact that

  396. Christ is going

  397. to turn you

  398. into his character

  399. is unbelievable.

  400. But the fact that

  401. he's going to turn me

  402. into his character

  403. is even more

  404. unbelievable.

  405. But that is what

  406. he promises.

  407. So do you remember

  408. Philippians chapter 3?

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  409. We eagerly await

  410. a saviour,

  411. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  412. who will transform

  413. our lowly bodies

  414. and so that they

  415. will be like his

  416. glorious body.

  417. And that is amazing.

  418. And right now

  419. there are serious

  420. pressures, aren't there,

  421. to give up Christianity.

  422. And the air

  423. that we breathe

  424. is full of unbelief.

  425. you've seen

  426. and I've seen

  427. people chuck

  428. their faith away.

  429. And people live

  430. successfully without

  431. Christ.

  432. But you know

  433. what they do

  434. when they do that?

  435. They live successfully

  436. without Christ

  437. and then they just

  438. rewrite the end.

  439. So in our culture

  440. they say

  441. Jesus is irrelevant

  442. but I'm on my way

  443. to heaven.

  444. They're in a better

  445. place, aren't they,

  446. Vicar?

  447. And it's a big mistake

  448. to think that you

  449. don't need him.

  450. And we who are

  451. holding on to the

  452. Bible and the

  453. Bible's teaching

  454. we look so stupid,

  455. we look so backward

  456. because it all

  457. looks like,

  458. doesn't it,

  459. for them it's

  460. working perfectly.

  461. The number of

  462. details that we

  463. have to deal with,

  464. the number of

  465. difficulties that

  466. come to us every

  467. day,

  468. there's a swamp

  469. of them at the

  470. moment, aren't there?

  471. And we wonder

  472. whether joyful

  473. and peaceful

  474. Christianity is

  475. possible.

  476. many of you

  477. dealing with so

  478. many details,

  479. so many

  480. difficulties that

  481. you actually

  482. wonder whether

  483. the Christianity

  484. you've signed up

  485. for is the

  486. right Christianity.

  487. Is it the

  488. Christianity that

  489. people sing about

  490. so triumphantly

  491. on those YouTube

  492. videos?

  493. Is it the

  494. Christianity that

  495. people sometimes

  496. testify of?

  497. And you say to

  498. yourself, like I

  499. say to myself,

  500. my life is such

  501. a mess.

  502. And the global

  503. information that

  504. comes to us,

  505. which we're

  506. expected somehow

  507. to absorb and

  508. explain what is

  509. happening in the

  510. world.

  511. So why are

  512. people suffering

  513. like they are?

  514. I don't know.

  515. What is God

  516. doing in this

  517. coronavirus?

  518. Why is

  519. Christianity so

  520. non-existent in

  521. that part of the

  522. world?

  523. Why are so many

  524. people far from

  525. Christ?

  526. It's a swamping,

  527. global,

  528. overwhelming

  529. information.

  530. And Jesus

  531. said there will

  532. be lots of

  533. dangers for

  534. those that

  535. follow.

  536. He said some

  537. people, they're

  538. going to build

  539. on sand.

  540. And the

  541. foundations will

  542. be removed.

  543. Some people's

  544. faith, they'll

  545. be eaten up by

  546. thorns, worldly

  547. warriors, treasures,

  548. idols, false

  549. gods, and they'll

  550. quickly give up.

  551. Jesus says there

  552. be lots of

  553. false prophets,

  554. false Christ,

  555. who will deceive

  556. many people in

  557. this battle for

  558. souls.

  559. And yet the

  560. truth is this,

  561. that when a

  562. man or a

  563. woman or a

  564. boy or a

  565. girl takes

  566. Christ and

  567. receives him

  568. as saviour and

  569. lord and king

  570. and shepherd

  571. who is forever,

  572. the new life

  573. that Christ

  574. gives you is

  575. forever.

  576. forever.

  577. The grip that

  578. he has on you

  579. this morning is

  580. forever.

  581. The promises

  582. which he gives

  583. to you are

  584. forever.

  585. The man or

  586. woman or boy

  587. or girl who

  588. takes Christ

  589. is going to be

  590. sustained to the

  591. end.

  592. And he is able

  593. to make his

  594. people steady.

  595. Right up to the

  596. time where they

  597. sleep and

  598. midnight comes

  599. and the cry

  600. goes out.

  601. And in 25

  602. verse 6,

  603. either they

  604. come or go

  605. to meet him.

  606. You've got lots

  607. of time on your

  608. hands and so

  609. read good books.

  610. Maybe read

  611. Pilgrim's Progress.

  612. If you go to

  613. Ligonier,

  614. here's a little

  615. advert.

  616. Ligonier,

  617. I've got a

  618. course by

  619. Derek Thomas

  620. on Pilgrim's

  621. Progress,

  622. little 20

  623. minute videos.

  624. They're okay,

  625. the book is

  626. far better,

  627. but why not

  628. read it?

  629. There's a great

  630. picture in

  631. Pilgrim's Progress.

  632. A pilgrim is

  633. taken into a

  634. room,

  635. into the house

  636. of interpreter.

  637. An interpreter

  638. shows him a

  639. big massive

  640. fire in the

  641. middle of the

  642. room,

  643. in a fireplace.

  644. And he marvels

  645. at this fire,

  646. but there's a

  647. man in front of

  648. the fire with

  649. buckets of

  650. water,

  651. pouring buckets

  652. of water onto

  653. the fire,

  654. trying to put it

  655. out.

  656. And Pilgrim

  657. asks the question

  658. to interpreter,

  659. why is the fire

  660. not going out

  661. with this guy

  662. throwing water

  663. on it?

  664. And the

  665. interpreter takes

  666. him around the

  667. back.

  668. And interestingly,

  669. in Pilgrim's

  670. Progress,

  671. there's a man

  672. who is piping

  673. oil into the

  674. back of the

  675. fire.

  676. And that is

  677. what sustains

  678. the fire.

  679. There's a guy

  680. in the front

  681. pouring water

  682. over it,

  683. but there's a

  684. guy in the

  685. back putting

  686. oil into the

  687. fire.

  688. And that is

  689. what sustains

  690. us.

  691. And God is

  692. able to sustain

  693. us so that

  694. we're steady

  695. to the end.

  696. The gift of

  697. being ready to

  698. meet with

  699. Christ.

  700. The gift of

  701. being steady.

  702. And of

  703. course,

  704. God calls

  705. on us at

  706. this time to

  707. be steady,

  708. but he gives

  709. us the gift

  710. of being

  711. steady.

  712. Third thing,

  713. still with me?

  714. The last thing

  715. is the gift of

  716. being able to

  717. go into God's

  718. presence.

  719. In verses

  720. 18 to

  721. 13.

  722. And we see

  723. there,

  724. don't we,

  725. that there's a

  726. serious separation

  727. that takes

  728. place.

  729. We see that

  730. the foolish

  731. bridesmaid

  732. have said,

  733. no,

  734. I don't need

  735. this.

  736. And suddenly

  737. they find that

  738. they cannot

  739. enter the

  740. wedding feast.

  741. And they

  742. discover that

  743. the oil

  744. that the

  745. wise bridesmaids

  746. have is

  747. non-transferable.

  748. And that

  749. makes sense,

  750. doesn't it?

  751. I can't

  752. give salvation

  753. to you.

  754. I can't

  755. give it to

  756. another person.

  757. I can't

  758. give my

  759. eternal life

  760. to another

  761. person.

  762. I can't

  763. save another

  764. person.

  765. The saviour

  766. is Christ.

  767. And the

  768. desperate

  769. suggestion is

  770. made in

  771. verse 9.

  772. Can you

  773. see it?

  774. it says,

  775. since there

  776. will not be

  777. enough for

  778. us and

  779. for you,

  780. go rather

  781. to the

  782. dealers and

  783. buy for

  784. yourselves.

  785. Of course,

  786. that will

  787. never work.

  788. Then in

  789. verse 10,

  790. Christ comes

  791. and the

  792. day of

  793. opportunity

  794. is over.

  795. The door

  796. shuts and

  797. the tragic

  798. cry goes

  799. out.

  800. now we

  801. realise our

  802. mistake.

  803. Please open

  804. the door,

  805. but it's

  806. all over.

  807. And I

  808. hope that as

  809. you listen

  810. to this

  811. parable,

  812. you don't

  813. think that

  814. God is

  815. terribly

  816. unjust.

  817. Because this

  818. is a word

  819. remembered to

  820. people who

  821. have had a

  822. lifetime of

  823. opportunity.

  824. Think of the

  825. millions of

  826. people in

  827. this city

  828. who are

  829. going to

  830. get to

  831. the end

  832. of their

  833. life and

  834. wish that

  835. they just

  836. lifted the

  837. Bible off

  838. the shelf.

  839. Or read

  840. what was

  841. given to

  842. them.

  843. Or listened

  844. to what was

  845. said to

  846. them.

  847. I hope

  848. you won't

  849. think that

  850. this is a

  851. problem or

  852. some far

  853. off person

  854. somewhere and

  855. how the

  856. whole plan is

  857. corrupt.

  858. Because we

  859. know that on

  860. the last day

  861. when Christ

  862. comes again,

  863. everyone will

  864. say to God,

  865. you've done

  866. everything right.

  867. There will be

  868. on that day

  869. no complaints

  870. and no

  871. objections.

  872. There will

  873. be lots of

  874. regrets and

  875. lots of

  876. joys, but

  877. no objections.

  878. Bishop J.C.

  879. Ryle, who

  880. again is a

  881. great man to

  882. be reading at

  883. this time,

  884. said this is a

  885. humbling picture,

  886. especially for

  887. preachers and

  888. pastors.

  889. Because after

  890. all our

  891. preaching and

  892. after all our

  893. praying and

  894. after all our

  895. missionary

  896. exertions are

  897. broadened at

  898. home, many

  899. will be found

  900. at last to be

  901. lifeless.

  902. So many who

  903. seem to be

  904. wise will be

  905. shown to be

  906. fools.

  907. And so many

  908. who seemed as

  909. believers to be

  910. fools will be

  911. seen to be

  912. wise.

  913. when that

  914. door is

  915. shut.

  916. And I

  917. don't think

  918. that I can

  919. put into

  920. words the

  921. absolute

  922. delight of

  923. that day

  924. being found

  925. inside by

  926. the goodness

  927. of God and

  928. the kindness

  929. of Christ.

  930. To be

  931. inside that

  932. wedding feast.

  933. I don't think

  934. that we can

  935. put into

  936. those words

  937. what it is

  938. going to be

  939. to be found

  940. inside Christ.

  941. to be

  942. open to

  943. the door

  944. has been

  945. shut on

  946. sadness and

  947. on evil and

  948. on sin.

  949. And that on

  950. that day there

  951. will be no

  952. more burdens

  953. to carry,

  954. no more

  955. heartaches to

  956. experience,

  957. no more

  958. scars,

  959. no more

  960. worry,

  961. no more

  962. anxiety,

  963. no more

  964. tension,

  965. no more

  966. sinfulness,

  967. sadness,

  968. no more

  969. driving each

  970. other mad

  971. cooped up

  972. in the

  973. house,

  974. no more

  975. waiting rooms

  976. to sit in,

  977. no people

  978. to avoid,

  979. no more

  980. funerals,

  981. the door is

  982. going to be

  983. shut and

  984. all that.

  985. And that

  986. door is

  987. going to

  988. make the

  989. people of

  990. Jesus Christ

  991. secure and

  992. thankful,

  993. being part

  994. of a wedding

  995. feast.

  996. that Jesus

  997. who is the

  998. genius behind

  999. the universe

  1000. has planned

  1001. for unworthy

  1002. people like

  1003. us,

  1004. but he's

  1005. made it

  1006. possible through

  1007. his death on

  1008. the cross and

  1009. his resurrection.

  1010. And he's

  1011. planned a

  1012. perfect feast.

  1013. And this

  1014. Jesus is

  1015. able to make

  1016. you who are

  1017. listening and

  1018. watching to me

  1019. today ready,

  1020. wonderfully

  1021. ready.

  1022. to make you

  1023. steady right

  1024. to the end.

  1025. And he is

  1026. able to make

  1027. you go in.

  1028. Let's bow

  1029. our heads in

  1030. prayer.

  1031. Let's pray

  1032. again.

  1033. Our loving

  1034. Holy Father,

  1035. we praise you

  1036. for your

  1037. word.

  1038. We praise

  1039. you that it

  1040. speaks to us

  1041. of reality.

  1042. it reminds

  1043. us of what

  1044. is true.

  1045. You are a

  1046. loving

  1047. Father.

  1048. We thank you

  1049. for what you've

  1050. taught us this

  1051. morning.

  1052. We pray that you

  1053. would help us

  1054. to live in the

  1055. light of that

  1056. day,

  1057. to rejoice in

  1058. our Saviour,

  1059. the Lord Jesus

  1060. Christ,

  1061. who is able

  1062. to make us

  1063. ready to meet

  1064. with him and

  1065. who will keep

  1066. us to the

  1067. end and who

  1068. will bring us

  1069. into his

  1070. presence.

  1071. God,

  1072. we pray that

  1073. you would help

  1074. us to reflect

  1075. much on this

  1076. today,

  1077. to use the

  1078. time that

  1079. you've given

  1080. to us wisely.

  1081. We thank you

  1082. Father that you

  1083. will keep us.

  1084. Lord, we want

  1085. to pray for

  1086. our community.

  1087. Your providence

  1088. is often a

  1089. mystery to us

  1090. and you

  1091. ordain things

  1092. that are hard

  1093. to bear.

  1094. And there is

  1095. sickness and

  1096. there is sorrow.

  1097. There is great

  1098. anxiety in our

  1099. world.

  1100. And we pray

  1101. that,

  1102. Heavenly Father,

  1103. you will help

  1104. us to remain

  1105. steady.

  1106. We pray that

  1107. you would be

  1108. with those in

  1109. our community

  1110. that are anxious

  1111. and fearful,

  1112. for those

  1113. particularly who

  1114. are unwell.

  1115. Thank you for

  1116. health services,

  1117. for doctors,

  1118. for nurses,

  1119. for the hospital.

  1120. We thank you

  1121. for our government

  1122. and those in

  1123. authority.

  1124. We pray,

  1125. Heavenly Father,

  1126. that this virus

  1127. would not be

  1128. as bad as it

  1129. potentially could

  1130. be.

  1131. We pray that

  1132. you might use

  1133. this time to

  1134. turn our nation

  1135. back to you.

  1136. And,

  1137. Heavenly Father,

  1138. we thank you

  1139. that we look

  1140. for a day

  1141. and we long

  1142. for a day

  1143. when there will

  1144. be no more

  1145. sin and there

  1146. will be no more

  1147. suffering.

  1148. and Christ

  1149. will come

  1150. again.

  1151. And we pray

  1152. that there

  1153. would be many

  1154. that are brought

  1155. to be ready

  1156. for that day

  1157. through this.

  1158. Help us,

  1159. Heavenly Father,

  1160. to love our

  1161. neighbours well,

  1162. to show the

  1163. love of Christ.

  1164. Meet with us

  1165. at this time.

  1166. Bless us on

  1167. this through your

  1168. day.

  1169. Bless all your

  1170. people,

  1171. wherever they

  1172. meet.

  1173. We pray,

  1174. Heavenly Father,

  1175. not only for

  1176. our own

  1177. community

  1178. and our

  1179. country.

  1180. We pray for

  1181. those other

  1182. parts of the

  1183. world,

  1184. particularly for

  1185. Italy and

  1186. Spain and

  1187. other areas

  1188. which have

  1189. been so hugely

  1190. affected.

  1191. And we think

  1192. of parts of

  1193. the world

  1194. struggling with

  1195. other issues

  1196. for this

  1197. terrible swarm

  1198. of locusts

  1199. in East Africa.

  1200. and we pray,

  1201. Heavenly Father,

  1202. that you would

  1203. draw near to

  1204. your people

  1205. and comfort

  1206. those who

  1207. mourn.

  1208. Bless us

  1209. and our

  1210. families,

  1211. we ask.

  1212. We pray all

  1213. these things

  1214. in Jesus'

  1215. name.

  1216. Amen.
