  1. One of the best things about Christmas is surprises, isn't it? You've got a bed on Christmas Eve, you know what your main present will be probably or you think you might know but very often it's the little presents that are so much fun and you had no idea what you were going to get and you had no idea that the person who got you the gift was so thoughtful.

  2. And you've not thought about it and you get the present and you just say, oh that's fantastic, I wasn't expecting, it's a great surprise. I didn't even know I wanted it but now I see that I do want it now that I've got it.

  3. And there are some people out there, they've got the gift of giving gifts. They're just brilliant at it. And those surprises in lots of ways make Christmas.

  4. And I hope as we look at this passage that we might get a surprise. People come with their own idea of Christmas, with their own sentimental idea of Christmas.

  5. And as Christians we want to be surprised again and again as we go to what is a familiar story.

  6. So the first surprise is this, that the birth of Jesus was supernatural, not normal.

  7. The birth of Jesus is supernatural, not normal.

  8. And I think that's worth pointing out because in many people's minds what we've just read must just, they just think well the birth of Jesus, the conception of Jesus, it's just normal, it's just like everyone else and the kind of manger that's been embellished.

  9. And I guess for many people the reasoning goes like this, there was a person named Jesus 20 centuries ago and he was born in Bethlehem.

  10. But in the end he's just like us.

  11. Maybe he does some special things and the story has grown.

  12. But he was a normal man, born in the normal way, conceived in the normal way.

  13. But let's just go back to Matthew 1 and let's see that God was acting in a very, very special way.

  14. Look at verse 18, chapter 1.

  15. Before they came to Galilee, that's Joseph and Mary.

  16. She was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

  17. Look at verse 20.

  18. As Joseph considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying,

  19. Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

  20. Same point again.

  21. Then he was 23.

  22. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name the mother.

  23. She was a virgin.

  24. Mary was a virgin.

  25. It's made really clear in the text.

  26. And virgin births don't just happen, do they?

  27. And Joseph knew this.

  28. And so when Joseph finds out that she is with child, as her fiancé, he is absolutely horrified.

  29. In his mind, there is only one possible explanation.

  30. And that may be the same for you.

  31. There's only one explanation for pregnancy.

  32. Of course, they didn't have medical technology that we now have.

  33. But they're not naive, and they're not deft.

  34. Pregnancy does not just happen.

  35. So Joseph, he resolves to divorce her.

  36. He is a compassionate man.

  37. He doesn't want to put on his chain.

  38. He wants to do it quietly.

  39. But he's told by this messenger, by this angel, not to do it.

  40. But can you see what this section of God's word does for us?

  41. It says right at the start of Jesus' story, there is a God.

  42. And there is a Holy Spirit.

  43. And there are angels.

  44. There are unseen messengers from God.

  45. There's a whole unseen realm.

  46. There is a living and a true God.

  47. Who, with this birth, is doing something very, very special.

  48. And this birth happened because God acted supernaturally.

  49. God intervenes.

  50. At one level, it's a great surprise, isn't it?

  51. But then at another level, it shouldn't surprise us at all.

  52. That when God came into this world, it was a little bit different.

  53. That's what you'd expect, isn't it?

  54. If God is going to enter into his creation, surely he'll do that in a different way.

  55. When he left this world, well, it's a little bit different as well.

  56. And we would expect the entry point of God into the world to be different, and its exit point to be different.

  57. So when you think of when the President of the US comes to the UK, it is different, isn't it?

  58. I might flew back from Edinburgh on Sunday afternoon.

  59. There was no pomp.

  60. There was no ceremony.

  61. I just walked through Terminal 5 to get on the Piccadilly 9.

  62. But when the President of the US comes, regardless of what you think of the current one, he is someone special.

  63. When he comes to the airport, it's different.

  64. He doesn't come cramped up in economy class, queuing up to get his own bags, does he?

  65. He doesn't have to go through security and all the hassle.

  66. He comes as the special one in the special way.

  67. And when he leaves, he leaves in a special way.

  68. And so here we have in Matthew chapter 1 and 2, an account of a supernatural baby who was fully man, but also fully God.

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  69. And God acts to enter into his world.

  70. The first surprise is supernatural birth, not a normal woman.

  71. The second surprise for some of us will be that this is truth, not myth.

  72. It's truth, not myth.

  73. And so you might be thinking, God came to earth, it's just not likely.

  74. The Greeks have their myths.

  75. The Greeks have their gods.

  76. A myth is a made-up story.

  77. It is a legend without any basis in history or fact.

  78. And it's easy just to say it's a myth.

  79. The stuff about God coming to earth, that is your story, you might say.

  80. It's a story that your community has made up and adopted.

  81. And there's no real reason why I should adopt your story.

  82. Why I should believe about the supernatural conception and his birth.

  83. Of course, there's long answers to that, and there's short answers to those sort of questions.

  84. But let me just point you to a couple of things as you think about it.

  85. Firstly, what you have in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John is basically a record of eyewitness accounts.

  86. It is written like an eyewitness account.

  87. And we know that it was written by those who were very close to the events.

  88. And so a few weeks ago in Brentside High School, Noah came home wide-eyed, and he said that there'd been a stabbing in the school,

  89. and that a teacher had been stabbed.

  90. And there were police and there were ambulance there.

  91. I said, did you see it?

  92. No, but I heard about it.

  93. Did your friends see it?

  94. No, they'd not seen it.

  95. Did anyone you know had seen it?

  96. No, but everyone was talking about it, he said.

  97. Everyone was talking about it.

  98. And an hour and a half later, we had an email from the head teacher,

  99. saying that there were some rumours going around with the school and on social media,

  100. and one of the dinner lady staff had fainted,

  101. and an ambulance had been caught to take her to hospital.

  102. And had anyone seen it?

  103. The stabbing?

  104. No.

  105. Had anyone you know seen it?

  106. No.

  107. But everyone was talking about it.

  108. And we know what that's like, don't we?

  109. We know what it's like with schools or any closed communities.

  110. If there are eyewitnesses, they've probably got truth on their hands.

  111. If there is somebody who has seen it with their own eyes,

  112. it gives you a different level of confidence in the information.

  113. And so what you've got in Matthew and Mark and Luke and John

  114. is you've got eyewitness accounts.

  115. You've got something written by people,

  116. or spoken by people who were living at the time.

  117. The second thing to think about,

  118. of it being truth, not myth,

  119. there's a striking bit of evidence in the text.

  120. So in Matthew chapter 2,

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  121. you've got this whole issue of where Jesus was born.

  122. So the Magi, these wise men astrologers,

  123. they come looking from the Jesus,

  124. they come looking from the east,

  125. the star that they followed had got them so far,

  126. and they knew that there was going to be a king of the Jews who'd be born.

  127. And the star had informed them of that.

  128. They did the logical thing,

  129. they thought, where will the king of the Jews be born?

  130. Well, he'll be born in the capital, won't he?

  131. And so they come to Jerusalem.

  132. He'll be born in Israel.

  133. The king of the Jews,

  134. well, obviously, where does a king get born?

  135. He gets born in a palace,

  136. and so they end up talking to Herod.

  137. And you can sense in these verses, I think,

  138. the commotion that's going on in Jerusalem.

  139. So these visitors, they come from the east,

  140. they're a very wealthy man,

  141. and they ask the question to the current ruler,

  142. where is the king of the Jews to be born?

  143. And so King Herod calls a conference

  144. of the wise men of Jerusalem,

  145. the pundits,

  146. and he asks, where is the Christ to be born?

  147. Where will he be born?

  148. And they don't have an answer, verse 6.

  149. They have no answer.

  150. There in verse 6,

  151. well, they have an answer.

  152. Where will he be born?

  153. They told him, verse 5,

  154. in Bethlehem of Judea,

  155. because it's written about that on the prophets.

  156. And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

  157. are by no means the least among the rulers of Judah.

  158. But from you shall come a ruler

  159. who will shepherd my people, Israel.

  160. You see, they say to him,

  161. no, that there is a prophecy,

  162. there is a declaration

  163. that he will be born in Bethlehem.

  164. Now, why do they say that?

  165. Because they knew that 700 years prior,

  166. the prophet Micah had spoken.

  167. It had been predicted,

  168. God was speaking through Micah,

  169. that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem.

  170. And they knew that God had said,

  171. that is what would happen.

  172. 700 years earlier,

  173. that he'd be born in Bethlehem.

  174. And they knew he'd be born in Bethlehem,

  175. and that is exactly where he was born.

  176. The extraordinary accuracy of the Old Testament.

  177. These prophecies come true.

  178. In history,

  179. and in real time,

  180. you can't easily be dismissed.

  181. And so we're dealing with truth,

  182. and not myth.

  183. The third surprise is that Jesus is essential,

  184. and not optional.

  185. It was a supernatural conception.

  186. Do you remember?

  187. It wasn't a normal birth.

  188. You're dealing with something that is true.

  189. It's not a myth.

  190. That's a second surprise.

  191. But it still leaves a great question.

  192. And the question is,

  193. so what?

  194. Big deal.

  195. Maybe it's true after all.

  196. Maybe there is a supernatural birth.

  197. But what's that going to do with me?

  198. And so can we ask the question,

  199. do I need this?

  200. Do I need it?

  201. And we need to think for a moment

  202. about the importance of this.

  203. And again,

  204. we're not left guessing.

  205. Look at Matthew chapter 1,

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  206. and include it in the name

  207. that Matthew is given,

  208. that Jesus is given.

  209. So,

  210. and parents today,

  211. and like parents today,

  212. pretty much parents down through the ages,

  213. Mary and Joseph have no choice

  214. as to the name of their son.

  215. The name of their child is given.

  216. And so we have,

  217. don't we,

  218. the great mystery

  219. of when a child is born,

  220. what will the name be?

  221. And we ask parents,

  222. have you thought of a name yet?

  223. And we hope that those children

  224. that are born that we know

  225. will be gifts of God,

  226. won't they?

  227. But Mary and Joseph are told

  228. that they are to give this child a name,

  229. and you are to give him the name

  230. Jesus.

  231. For he shall save his people

  232. from their sins.

  233. Jesus is the Greek name

  234. of the Hebrew Joshua.

  235. Jesus means the Lord saves,

  236. the Lord rescues.

  237. That is the name

  238. that he is to be given,

  239. because that is exactly

  240. what he will do

  241. in verse 21.

  242. Verse 21,

  243. she will bear a son,

  244. and Joseph,

  245. you shall call his name Jesus,

  246. for he will save his people

  247. from their sins.

  248. The name he was given

  249. is the very thing

  250. that he would do.

  251. he would rescue his people

  252. from their sins.

  253. He would be a saviour.

  254. So you see a tragedy

  255. on your TV screen,

  256. and you see it happening.

  257. And you just want to run in

  258. and save,

  259. or dive in,

  260. or save them.

  261. But there's no point to that,

  262. because it would be suicide to do it.

  263. But Jesus,

  264. the rescuer,

  265. he dives in,

  266. he runs into the burning building.

  267. He comes into this world

  268. and would die upon the cross

  269. to save you,

  270. not from burning building,

  271. or not from drowning,

  272. but to save his people

  273. from their sins.

  274. That tells you

  275. that you and I have a problem

  276. from which we need saving.

  277. King Herod,

  278. he illustrates

  279. the sin problem,

  280. he wanted to be in charge.

  281. King Herod,

  282. I think,

  283. understands Christmas

  284. very, very well.

  285. He didn't want Jesus

  286. to be in charge,

  287. and so he was rid of Jesus.

  288. He said,

  289. I just want to run my life

  290. my way.

  291. I want to be the one

  292. that is in charge,

  293. not Jesus.

  294. And that is sin.

  295. And so saying no to God

  296. and saying,

  297. I want to run my life

  298. my way,

  299. that brings God's

  300. just condemnation.

  301. And that is a real problem.

  302. We don't feel it's a real problem.

  303. But when we say no to God

  304. and we say,

  305. I'm in charge,

  306. not you,

  307. that brings us

  308. into a collision course

  309. with God for judgment.

  310. But Jesus came

  311. to save you and I

  312. from that sin problem.

  313. Jesus came

  314. to save you and I

  315. from the condemnation

  316. by dying on a cross for us,

  317. by taking the judgment

  318. we deserve upon ourselves.

  319. Jesus came into this world

  320. and didn't say,

  321. I'm in charge,

  322. I'll do exactly

  323. what I want

  324. and God,

  325. no way.

  326. He lived God's way.

  327. And yet,

  328. he was crucified

  329. for our sin,

  330. for our rebellion,

  331. for our punishment.

  332. Each one of us

  333. are sinners

  334. and we all face

  335. the judgment of God

  336. and so we all need

  337. the rescue

  338. that Jesus provides.

  339. That rescue

  340. is open to us.

  341. And so how will he respond?

  342. How will he respond

  343. to this Jesus

  344. who was born

  345. in the most remarkable way,

  346. who came to earth,

  347. who is

  348. true

  349. and not a mess?

  350. How do you respond?

  351. Well, there's a number

  352. of responses.

  353. So let's just look

  354. at Herod in chapter 2.

  355. He is furious

  356. and he tries

  357. to get rid of Jesus.

  358. And he won't have

  359. anyone challenging him.

  360. And people do respond

  361. to the news like that.

  362. I think

  363. an authentic response

  364. when people understand

  365. who Jesus is,

  366. is fury.

  367. They can't stand him.

  368. They can't stand

  369. the thought of a God

  370. with whom they have

  371. to give account.

  372. And they want

  373. to get rid of him.

  374. No, thank you.

  375. I don't want him

  376. interfering with my life.

  377. Well, that's the first

  378. response, isn't it, Harry?

  379. Then there's the other

  380. common reaction

  381. of the people

  382. in Jerusalem.

  383. And the Magi

  384. come to Jerusalem

  385. and they say,

  386. where is the King

  387. of the Jews

  388. to be born?

  389. And there's a big

  390. conference, isn't there?

  391. There's other people

  392. in Jerusalem

  393. who get involved

  394. in the discussion

  395. and they work out,

  396. they say,

  397. yes, the King

  398. of the Jews

  399. is going to be born

  400. in Bethlehem.

  401. But as far as we know,

  402. the only people

  403. who actually go

  404. to Bethlehem

  405. are the Magi.

  406. Isn't that extraordinary?

  407. There's people

  408. who travel from the East

  409. because they say,

  410. where is the King

  411. of the Jews

  412. to be born?

  413. But the people

  414. that give them

  415. the information

  416. of where he's

  417. to be born,

  418. they can't be bothered.

  419. They won't travel

  420. ten miles down the road.

  421. They can't even be bothered

  422. to go and check out

  423. Bethlehem

  424. and see whether

  425. it's true or not.

  426. They can't be bothered

  427. to see whether

  428. our King

  429. has been born.

  430. Don't be like

  431. these people.

  432. Don't be like

  433. the people

  434. in Jerusalem

  435. who frankly

  436. couldn't be bothered.

  437. The third reaction

  438. is that of the Magi.

  439. They come from

  440. the East

  441. and they went

  442. and they looked

  443. and they found Jesus.

  444. And how did they react

  445. to this time

  446. and the 11th?

  447. Going into the house

  448. they saw the child,

  449. he's probably a toddler

  450. at this point,

  451. but Mary,

  452. his mother,

  453. and they fell down

  454. and they worshipped him.

  455. They opened up their bags

  456. and they give treasures.

  457. They offered him gifts

  458. of gold and frankincense

  459. and murder.

  460. They searched for him,

  461. they found him,

  462. they worshipped him.

  463. They bowed their knee to him.

  464. The one thing

  465. that Herod

  466. would not do,

  467. they do.

  468. They recognised

  469. that Jesus Christ

  470. is Lord

  471. and King

  472. and so they fall down

  473. in reverence

  474. and worship.

  475. That's the right way

  476. to recognise

  477. Jesus God.

  478. Christ is God

  479. and Christ

  480. is God's

  481. Saviour

  482. and he is

  483. worthy

  484. of our worship.

  485. And the only

  486. real response

  487. and true response

  488. is to come to him

  489. and say,

  490. I need rescue.

  491. And I see

  492. that he is

  493. the Saviour

  494. who died

  495. on the cross

  496. for sinners

  497. and I cannot

  498. save myself

  499. and so I need

  500. his salvation.

  501. And so I am

  502. going to trust him

  503. and I'm going to

  504. follow him

  505. as my King.

  506. To recognise

  507. that he came

  508. to die

  509. for sinners

  510. like you

  511. and like me.

  512. and to cry

  513. out to him

  514. and to put

  515. your trust

  516. in him

  517. and to bow

  518. your head

  519. before him

  520. and follow him

  521. as your King.

  522. And it's at that

  523. point that you

  524. leave, don't you,

  525. with the most

  526. amazing gift.

  527. The most surprising

  528. gift of all,

  529. the gift of

  530. forgiveness,

  531. of peace with

  532. God

  533. and of salvation.

  534. and we know,

  535. don't we,

  536. if we do that,

  537. well, we will

  538. have the most

  539. blessed Christmas

  540. despite all the

  541. restrictions.

  542. Let's pray.

  543. Thank you.
